White mismarks can occur with any base coat color, including brown. While mismarks in general are fairly common. However, two types of mismarks are sufficiently rare to be worth singling out for mention: Irish Spotting and Tuxedo. Irish Spotting The first of these rare mismarks is called Irish spotting. The amount of white can be pronounced or minimal. Tuxedo Mismarks An even rarer and more prized mismark is the tuxedo. As you are probably already imagining, the tuxedo mismark is a pronounced patch of white that appears on the chest. It then snakes up and around the back of the neck just like a tuxedo vest. Tuxedo mismarks often include white patches on the paws and face as well. Multi-Pattern A multi-pattern, multi-color or tri-color also called phantom parti coat will include a base color, a second color and white. The long mane and hair around the chest were left intact to keep the poodle's vital organs warm in the cold water, and owners also kept the hair around the joints to protect them from cold and injury and to help prevent rheumatism. Shaving the hair around the face left the poodle's mouth and eyes free so it could fulfill its retrieving responsibilities, and tying the hair on a poodle's head into a "top knot" also kept hair out of its eyes. Owners eventually tied these knots with brightly colored ribbons to help them identify their dogs from afar. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. Those two are great breeds but they both presented challenges for me and my lifestyle. By this time I already had 4 of my 6 children and as an Army officer and a helicopter pilot I traveled a great deal. I wanted a dog that was as intelligent and loyal as the previous dogs I had owned but one that did NOT shed. I also wanted a dog that would be protective, but not to the extent that I had to worry when dozens of neighborhood children would run in and out of the yard and house. As the years passed I started showing my poodles in obedience, obtaining a Companion Dog CD certification on Caesar very quickly. After our divorce it was too time consuming for me to continue to show my poodle and be a working single parent raising 6 children.
