We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Scroll below the pictures for developmental information. This litter is so so cute! F Getting More Mobile Between 2 and 3 weeks of age, puppy development takes off. At 2 weeks, puppies are still partially scooting around and wobbly on all fours. However, they are confidently walking around by 3 weeks. Between two and three weeks, they begin playing with each other and with toys. However, most of their time is still spent sleeping. For the most part, they will sleep for hours at a time. They wake up when mom comes in to feed them. Puppies will play for a few minutes and then they are back asleep again. They are rarely awake for more than 15 minutes at a time at 2 weeks. By three weeks, their periods of wakefulness is still only about 30 minutes at a time. We also will begin bottle feeding larger litters once a day when they are right around two weeks. We add a pan with pine pellets in it to the puppy pen at around 3 weeks of age. This will become their toileting area. Until puppies are 3 weeks 4 days, the pan is hit or miss with regard to toileting mostly miss. However, at 3 weeks 4 days, the idea begins to click. We scoop any poop out of the pan, but for several days, we leave the pee in there. The pellets absorb most of the smell as far as human noses go, but the puppies can smell it. We keep the rest of the pen as close to perfectly clean as we can keep it. We change the pads MANY times a day. The key to this stage of house training is for the puppies to associate their living quarters with cleanliness so that there is a clear differentiation between potty area and living area. Puppies naturally want to pee away from where they live. However, if breeders keep their puppies in quarters where everything has pee or poop, they will loose their natural instincts. Everything by Chris Christensen is great, but these brushes are perfect for all of your daily grooming needs. These are some other grooming tools you will want to have on hand. This seat-belt helps protect your pup in car rides. The harness style ensures that the belt would not pull on their neck in case of an accident. We recommend a travel-crate like this one for puppy pickup. It is collapsible, and can be secured using a seatbelt during travel. This is another option for puppy pickup and travel while they're small. The belt on the inside hooks to your dog's harness to keep them safe in case of an accident. Although we get most of our treats from Life's Abundance, these are some other toy and treat options that we love. There are risks associated with some of the other styles. Great option for storing food and treats. In general, most Doodles are not very food-motivated, but not always. If you have a Doodle who tends to eat too fast, this bowl will make eating a puzzle, and will slow them down. If you enjoy hiking or camping with your pup, this backpack is a great way for them to carry their own supplies. Our dogs love this, and it makes them feel like they have a job to do. We love this front-hook harness for leash-training purposes. Your pup will love this bed. It is super comfy, and machine-washable. This is a lifesaver! Hook it on to your leash to ensure that you are never out of baggies when you take your pup for a walk. This door mat is great! We love it so much we bought one for each door. We get the SuperChewer box, which provides us with several extremely durable toys for our dogs to love. If the toys alone weren't enough, the healthy snacks and treats that are included are great as well! It has a an adjustable strap that can attach to a leash, bag or stroller. Super convenient. I use these in the car, at the doors and in the crates. They don't slip around on tile, and are a must on rainy days! They are super absorbent, machine washable, and extremely durable. They are engraved front and back with up to 8 lines of personal information. Our puppies need the small size. I like this one because it is long enough that I don't have to bend over. It also has "teeth" on it, so it doesn't close and rip my grass. Harnesses are a must when walking puppies! They prevent throat injuries while learning to walk on a leash. This brand guarantees their products, even if chewed! Please secure your pets when traveling. This seatbelt is adjustable and very easy to use. I recommend using it with a harness to avoid neck injury. One end clips on to the collar or harness and the other end clips in just like a human seatbelt. We highly recommend this lifetime membership for anyone that owns a dog or puppy. It is everything you could ever need to train your dog. Contact Prepare for Your Australian Labradoodle Puppy Bringing home your new puppy is one of the greatest joys, and planning ahead and having what your new puppy will need are keys to a successful beginning. While it is great fun to buy lots of toys and pet beds and cute collars for your new family member, the greatest gift that you can give this furry baby is to prepare yourself with the knowledge of raising a dog. It is very important to think about your puppies first week with you in the most quiet and peaceful manner you can imagine. The following tips will help establish a good foundation relationship between you and your new pet. Good idea. Your puppies first few days would be best suited to having as much of your attention as possible and as calm of a schedule as you can manage. Your puppy will adjust best if you keep company to a minimum for the first days. Establishing a routine for feeding your puppy three times a day and a designated "crate training" time each initial day will serve both your family and your puppy well. It is very scary for a puppy to come into a new home and be left alone for many hours at a time. While it is fine to leave the puppy for a little while each day, it needs to be done in a manner that will be conducive to helping your puppy adjust well. If you have children, be sure to read books and watch videos about children and dogs. The puppy is not a new toy, and the children need to be very respectful of the new puppies space and sleep schedule. The puppy is not a toy. Watch for signs that your puppy needs to use the restroom. Puppies have very little bladder control and will need to take frequent breaks to eliminate. The key times to be watchful and initiate potty breaks are: after eating, drinking, playing, or waking from sleep. Do not ever punish your pet for an accident. Just pick him up and redirect him. Then praise him each time he goes outside. Never ever take a puppy that has not been fully vaccinated to a retail pet store. Vaccinations will usually be completed by 16 weeks and your vet can inform you of the timeframe that your pet will have the full coverage of the vaccinations. Pet stores are frequently the culprits of a puppy being exposed to harmful diseases that are life threatening. Be sure you have read a few books to understand what typical "puppy behaviors" look like. A few normal puppy behaviors include: nipping, chasing, chewing, and barking. Good pet owners will have a plan in place to address these issues in a manner that is positive and will redirect the behavior. Like children, puppies respond best to repetition. Food and Water Dishes Non-breakable, non-chewable, tip-proof, and easy to clean. We recommend stainless steel or heavy ceramic bowls big enough to be used when your puppy is full grown, or heavy enough to not be picked up, pushed around, or tipped over. The Slopper Stoppers, do exactly what they say, no slopper and no playing in the water!!! We also recommend that you purchase a harness for your new puppy for potty trips on your way home. Young puppies should never have a leash attached to their collars as this can cause damage to their necks and also encourage puppies to pull when walking them. Puppies grow quickly, so we recommend having a couple small, lightweight, adjustable harnesses that are easy to snap on and off. Having a lightweight four to six foot leash to start out with will give them great beginning exposure to leash training. Same rules apply! As a word of caution, we do not recommend retractable leashes. They can pose a danger to puppies and their families. Enrichment and Chew Toys Your new puppy will come home with stuffed Kong animal. We especially love the Kongs that can be stuffed, find that here! Any of the puzzle toys are also excellant for your new puppy! A wire comb Greyhound brand type comb is awesome to check for any small mats that could be starting. It will go from the skin to the ends of the hair and grab onto any dead hair that needs to come out. A nail trimmer to keep the ends of his nails short is helpful, or you can ask your Vet to trim nails at each visit as you go through your puppy vaccination series, and ultimately have your groomer trim them at each grooming visit. While some will adopt the more docile appearance of their domestic dog parent — the German Shepherd, others will inherit the wilder look of the Coyote. That said, there are still some telltale features that are present on most German Shepherd Coyote mixes. The first one is a lean, athletic, and rectangular-shaped body. The body of this hybrid canine should have well-defined muscles covered by a double shaggy coat. Their possible coat colors are black , brown, white, sable , or a combination of these. These hybrids will also have a bushy tail that rests downward when stationary. Their muzzles are always long and well-defined. Additionally, they will have pointy ears and their eyes are always dark shades of brown. In terms of size, Coyote Shepherds are medium-to-large canines. When fully grown, this hybrid will be about the same height as a standard GSD. However, they are typically leaner than German Shepherd Dogs. The full-grown size of a German Shepherd Coyote mix is 21 to 25 inches in height and 60 to pounds in weight. On average, such hybrid canids are about the same height as Coyotes, if not slightly taller. One thing to know regarding the size of Coyote Shepherds is that it is not typically linked to gender. It is possible for female Coyote Shepherds to outgrow their male counterparts. A good way to approximate the full-grown size of these hybrids is by looking at the size of their parents. Unpredictable is the best word to describe the temperament of Coyote German Shepherd mixes. While some will exhibit similar behavior to their German Shepherd parent, others will surely show the wild nature of the adult Coyote. Some Coyote Shepherd owners claim that their pets are just as easily trainable as any other dog breed. On the other hand, some owners are certain that Coydogs are not for the faint of heart. All of these mean one thing, that the temperament of Coyote Shepherds is indeed a mixed bag. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell whether a particular German Shepherd Coyote dog breed will be as docile as other dogs. Otherwise, expect its temperament to be unpredictable. All things considered, the temperament of a German Shepherd Coyote mix is the main reason it is not recommended for new pet owners. However, if you have years of experience in training dogs, then taming a Coyote Shepherd will be an exciting challenge for you! This is about the same as the life expectancy of a German Shepherd dog. However, this is a few years shorter compared to the average lifespan of a Coyote in captivity — 14 years. Coyote dog mixes are not known for their health just like other dogs that were crossed with wild animals. In fact, their health is average at best. These hybrids will be at risk of a few health conditions that are also common to their parent animals throughout their life. Most of these conditions are inherited from both the German Shepherd and Coyote. Here are the common health issues in Coyote German Shepherd mixes: Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is a health issue characterized by the misalignment of the ball and socket joint. Similar to German Shepherds, Coyote Shepherds are also prone to this health issue. When left untreated, hip dysplasia in Coydogs will worsen and may cause inactivity. Heartworm: Heartworm is a serious health condition that is caused by a parasitic worm known as Dirofilaria. This parasite is commonly transmitted through a mosquito bite. Unfortunately, there is no approved prevention medicine for heartworms in Coydogs. However, many Coydogs owners use heartworm medicine for dogs. Mange: Sarcoptic mange in dogs is a contagious skin condition. In fact, it can be transmitted from canines to humans or vice versa. Treatment for mange in Coydogs comes in the form of dips and topical creams. A Coydog diagnosed with mange will experience extreme itch on different parts of its body. Autoimmune Thyroiditis: Autoimmune thyroiditis occurs when the immune system of a canine attacks the thyroid gland. Since many German Shepherds are affected by this disease, unfortunately, there is a decent chance it can also occur in Coydogs. Some symptoms of this condition include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, increased appetite, and heart murmurs. The German Shepherd Coyote mix can be unpredictable when it comes to their health. The only surefire way to keep it in its best shape is by giving it the right kind of food, exercising it frequently, and taking it on regular vet checkups. Advantages and Disadvantages of Breeding Coyotes and German Shepherds Together There are plenty of reasons why interspecific hybrids are bred. Some breeders may be looking for domestic dogs with specific sets of characters. On the other hand, some breeders may just be pushing the boundaries of breeding. That said, the goal varies from one breeder to another. However, regardless of why Coyote Shepherds are bred, it is useful to know the advantages and disadvantages of cross-breeding. This is a good thing if you are looking for a pet with a unique appearance. Possibility for Better Health: In many cases, crossbred puppies exhibit fewer congenital issues and fewer genetic conditions. Crossbreeding is known to minimize or eliminate inheritable diseases from parent canines. High Work Drive: Coydogs typically have a higher work drive than the average dog. This makes them better suited for some types of work such as hunting. And here are some disadvantages of breeding Coyotes and German Shepherds together: Unpredictable Temperament: Coydogs can be very unpredictable when it comes to their temperament. While others will be docile or great guard dogs, some will be naturally stubborn. Hard to Predict Their Size: If you are looking for a particular size in a pet, Coydogs may not be the best option. Crossbreeding Coyotes and GSDs often results in unique-looking canines that vary widely in size. The important takeaway here is that breeding Coyotes and German Shepherds is safe and ethical. After all, this mix has been around for ages. However, whether or not you should get a Coyote Shepherd depends entirely on what you need in a pet. It is important to realize that most of your experience in caring for a Coyote Shepherd will be unique. You will need to experiment a bit from time to time, especially when it comes to their nutrition and exercise. You should throw in a few variations of these common exercises to keep your Coydog in tip-top shape! Apart from all these, it would be better to start crate training when they are already a few weeks old. This will prevent them from soiling your furniture and other house items. Coydogs such as Coyote German Shepherd mixes are relatively rare pooches. Aside from the price of a Coydog Shepherd itself, you should also prepare for a few other expenses. These are things like a crate, toys, feeding bowls, and more. White Shedding Both German Shepherds and coyotes have thick double coats that shed a lot, so their mix will be the same. Coyote Shepherds shed all year round and blow their coat twice a year during spring and fall at which time they will shed obscene amounts of hair. Temperament Being a mix of a domestic dog and a wild animal, coyote Shepherds are often unpredictable and as such not suited for newbie owners. First-generation coyote Shepherds tend to be less cooperative and more aggressive compared to other dog breeds so training and early socialization are a must! Pet Friendly A properly socialized German Shepherd coyote mix can get along with other dogs especially if they were raised together. However, some may inherit health issues that affect coyotes and German Shepherds. The most common health problems seen in this mix are: Hip and elbow dysplasia Arthritis Bloat The German Shepherd Coyote mix has an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years, but they can live longer when properly cared for. Grooming Their thick and double medium-length coats are shed all year round and need to be brushed regularly to remove loose hairs and prevent mats from forming. Brush your mix at least four times a week to keep their coat nice and clean. During the shedding season, you may need to brush your dog once a day to control the shedding and prevent the undercoat from getting embedded in your clothes and furniture. Bathe your mix once every three or four months or as necessary using a de-shedding dog shampoo. Inspect their ears for dirt and waxy buildup once a week and clean as necessary. Food or Diet Having a wild coyote as one parent, this mix will thrive on raw diets and will enjoy eating fresh meat and bones. When feeding a raw diet, talk with your vet or canine nutritionist as they can create a complete and balanced meal plan for your dog. Training and Exercise Shepherd coyotes are highly energetic dogs that need around two hours of vigorous activity every single day! Hiking, jogging, running, cycling, and agility are a few ways you can keep your mix exercised and help them burn excess energy. Besides regular exercise, this hybrid needs to be mentally stimulated so invest in puzzles and interactive toys and play with your dog every day. Keeping your dog entertained and occupied will prevent them from getting bored, frustrated, and destructive. Shepherd coyotes are highly intelligent hybrids, but they are also wild which can make training a challenge. Luckily these dogs are food motivated, so reward-based training and tasty treats can help a lot in training. Due to their wild and unpredictable natures, you should continue training your mix for the rest of their lives. All dogs must be properly socialized, but coyote Shepherds even more so. Expose your puppy to lots of different people, children, animals, places, situations, noises, smells, and sounds to build up their confidence and help them grow into a well-adjusted and friendly dog. This hybrid is better off living in rural homes that have fenced yards and a lot of space for this dog to run around and play. The coyote German Shepherd mix is a rare designer hybrid so you may have trouble locating a reputable breeder or finding a puppy at a shelter. German Shepherd Coyote Mix Breeders Before you start researching different breeders, know that owning a coydog is illegal in most states without special permits and licensing. The exact price will depend on the breeder, location, and supply and demand. Even if you do, you will need extensive paperwork and permits to adopt and take this hybrid home.
