No kids, but much discussion of bringing a large, silver male Standard Poodle into our family came about. Brian has had Brittanys since and always thought a Standard Poodle would be a great upland game bird hunting partner for his Brittanys. It was very impressive. After alot of research and planning, bringing in our first standard poodle Gi Gi in and the many poodles that have followed, the kennel name, Marquis Diamond came to be. This name came to us as a result of many of our dogs that had "Diamond" in their registered names and the favorite cut in the precious stone for us is the MARQUIS cut. It just worked out that the full name, "Marquis Diamond" for our Standard Poodles was the right fit. Our poodles and brittanys have full access to our home, our grounds and all areas on our property. Our puppies are born in our den on the first floor of our home and for the first 4 - 6 weeks are raised with us in our house and fully interact with us in our everyday lives. By 6 weeks of age, they are ready to move to their puppy play area in our basement which is adjacent to our grooming room. Our outside puppy play area that is set up with astro turf is the next step for them by 7 weeks of age, they go to the outside play area, weather permiting, a few hours each day. We live on 10 fenced acres and when there are no visitors expected, our adult dogs are allowed free access on our grounds, house and play areas. We choose names that are meaningful to us, names that somehow connect to our lives. Once the puppies have a name, it is impossible not to fall in love with them and to see them as individuals with unique personalities. During the first weeks the puppies spend most of their time nursing and sleeping, and we try to capture some of these sweet moments. An exciting moment is when the puppies open their eyes at about two weeks. This is also when their ears fully open, allowing them to hear. We try to expose them to a variety of sensory experiences: new sights, sounds, smells, and textures. At four weeks, they walk, run, leap, and tumble. They are so much fun to watch. At this stage, their personalities really start to show. It is really good for puppies to be exposed to a variety of people and animals. Our puppies get to hang out with the big dogs, under supervision. We often invite families with kids to come see the puppies. Kids know exactly what to do. Cocker Pugs tend to be loyal and affectionate dogs. They create strong bonds with their human companions and are a great choice for families. Their easily trained and are eager to play with anyone. The mix of the personalities of the Cocker Spaniel and the Pug balance each other out. They result in being intelligent and loving dogs. You need to exercise Cocker Pugs daily, otherwise, they will become pudgy. They need lots of attention. These dogs are very intelligent, but they are often stubborn. Many of them are motivated by treats or food. Cocker Spaniels are happy , affectionate, and social. They are also good with other dogs and children when socialized early, as well as being sweet and gentle. They always want to please you and they crave your attention. Cocker Spaniels are also energetic, so they love to explore and play. Pugs are known as being clowns, while at the same time being intelligent and not at all aggressive. They love spending time with you, and they do their best to take all of your attention. These dogs can also be lazy, which often will cause chubbiness. They have low levels of energy and are glad to simply hang out. If you are noticing that your Cocker Pug is taking after their pug parent, make sure that you are giving them exercise daily. Your dog will be good with children and other dogs , but they can be strong-willed and stubborn. Many times, the genes from the parents of the puppy will balance one another out, resulting in an intelligent, loving and charming companion. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Cocker Pugs generally are social dogs that will enjoy going to a dog park and making some new friends. However, your dog may be more laidback, which means they are happy to simply lay around. He seems to have the personality of a Cocker; loves to play. He is 25 lb. He is a loving, energetic and adorable pup, with a great temperament. I think he is a perfect example of a beautiful Cocker Spaniel x Pug. In only one month she learned sit, wait, leave it, lie down, and some more of the fun ones: dance, spin, shake, speak and roll over. Her mother is a lb black Pug and her father is a lb. Although she was only 35lbs, she acted as if she were bigger and was the leader of all our dogs. Cudjoe was a great family dog who would never hurt anyone. Unfortunately, she was only 8 when she was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphosarcoma skin cancer and soon after died. She put up a fight to the very end and we were left broken hearted. They have always carried a deep sense of liking for animals in their lives. He's well-behaved in the house and walks well on leash although he does need to be reminded periodically who's walking who. Bolt enjoys being brushed and it's about the only time he's able to stay still for more than a couple of minutes. He is calm in a crate or just confined to a single room when left alone. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience.
