If you have gotten a puppy from us before, she is the person you interacted with. She has been the photographer, website editer, email and phone person and the general PR manager. In March of Ronda was diagnosed with an agressive form of cancer with a bad prognosis. Her family was hopefull for recovery though. Ted has always been a part of Red Retriever but more behind the scenes. We appriciate your understanding going forward as Ted learns the ropes of the website, photos and correspondence. Intelligent and beautiful as the Irish Setter and loving and loyal as the Golden Retriever. Hybrid vigor, in a beautiful loving companion. Interestingly the cross is quite similar to early golden retrievers as seen in this painting. The Golden Retriever has been bred for lighter colors in recent years because this is favored by the AKC. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. I recommend looking at the images page to see some of the stunning photos we have collected over the years. We have been raising Golden Retriever Irish Setter Hybrids for more than 15 years and have insight that only comes through experience. Packer Pictured above as an adult and a puppy Packer is one of our favorite puppies from our first litter. He went to a family in Alaska who were kind enough keep in contact and send us pictures. Packer and his family came to visit us in on our new property. We have been on the Blue Mountains above Weston, Oregon going on 7 years. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for New York Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. While Red Golden Retrievers can grow as big as a normal golden retriever, they are often smaller than most normal golden retrievers. Red Golden Retrievers are very similar to Golden Retrievers in many ways. The main difference besides their coat color is their energy levels. Red Retrievers were bred to aid in hunting birds and are known to be more athletic than standard Goldens. They need to be exercised more often to get all of their energy out. We stand by our pups, which is why we work alongside licensed veterinarians to ensure that our puppies are healthy and always up to date on their deworming and vaccination protocols. We also offer a 2-year genetic health guarantee on all of our puppies. That way, you can rest easy knowing your puppy is healthy and free from genetic defects and congenital diseases. Our mission is dedicated to connecting healthy, beautiful puppies with their forever families. Because their temperament is friendly, energetic, and patient. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and devoted. Due to their higher energy levels they were bred to hunt after all , they do best with active families where they can get a lot of attention and are great with children. Luckily Red Retrievers and Goldens alike are known for their soft mouths since they were bred to hunt birds. The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! Are Red Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Red Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature even with their higher energy levels. They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Usually not, when compared to other subtypes of Golden Retrievers. While Red Golden Retrievers are much alike to Golden Retrievers with their high patience levels, they are known to have more energy. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene manifests relatively rarely compared to other colors. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. So, while this is not a reason not to get a GSD, it is a reason to look for adequate breeders, to ask for health certificates, to take good care of your dog, and to go to routine vet check-ups. German Shepherds can also be costly to take care of not just to purchase The regular vet visits, the high need for exercise, and the extra-space requirements all make the GSD a relatively expensive dog to take care of in terms of money as well. German Shepherds are very smart but that also makes them easily bored — they require lots of mental stimulation As with all smart dog breeds such as retrievers and other shepherds, the high intelligence of the GSD can be a curse as much as a blessing. So, what can be done to avoid boredom? Toys and time. However, an inexperienced dog owner can find a GSD to be more than a handful. Why is that? Simple — because they are so smart! Yes, their intelligence means that you can train them a lot but it also means they can be temperamental, manipulative, and stubborn! This breed is cute and cuddly at home but socially awkward in public German shepherds are incredibly cute, social, and loving animals. They are loyal to their family and would do anything for those close to them. What does this mean for you? Even if you just get a random GSD and not give it any special training or socialization, the dog may still get along just fine with a cat or a newborn baby. However, in general, the social awkwardness and guard-dog nature of GSDs means that they often need to be socialized well if you want to make other additions to the households down the line. Make sure that you teach your growing GSD to get along with other dog breeds in the dog park or at home. If you have a cat or are thinking of getting a cat, make sure your German Shepherd is accustomed to interacting with cats without any aggression. One of the best and easiest ways to avoid most of the problems above is to just get a second German Shepherd! Yes, we did just say that this breed can be a handful. However, a second dog usually brings much more benefits than negatives: The second dog will join the first in the playtime, meaning that both will exercise with each other very often and minimize the need for your involvement. Having a second GSD also means more mental stimulation for both dogs — again, less work for you and more fun for them. As natural guard dogs, German Shepherds may need to be trained not to bark Unfortunately, GSDs are especially bad for apartment owners not just because they are big but also because they tend to bark at strangers. They are guard dogs after all. This can be avoided, of course, there are ways to train any dog not to bark at strangers or at outside noises. There are several reasons for this: The frequent barking we mentioned above. Yes, you can train that behavior away but your landlord may still forbid you from getting a GSD. Getting a carpet or another type of floor insulation will help here. Giving your dog enough playtime outside will also alleviate this problem. But you may still get in trouble with your neighbors. They are just a large breed and many people, including parents of small children, are afraid of large dogs. Not only are GSDs not hypoallergenic, but they also tend to shed a lot! There are two main reasons for this: The aforementioned health concerns that some German Shepherds have and that get more and more likely as the dog gets older. The simple fact that the GSD is a large dog breed and larger breeds just have a shorter lifespan than smaller ones. As you can see, there are lots of factors to consider before getting a GSD. In general, the right GSD owner can be characterized as such: Has a larger-than-average home, a yard, and a nearby dog park. Has enough time to spend with a German Shepherd. Knows how to train and socialize a GSD properly. Has the financial means to support a German Shepherd. Wants a second dog to play with the first one. How to prepare for getting a German Shepherd? Just like soon-to-be-parents before their first baby, there are lots of books and research to comb through if you want to give your future German Shepherd the care, upbringing, socialization, and care it needs. So Make sure your home is ready for a large dog to soon start springing through it. Make sure you have the time and daily schedule to play with a GSD. Consider owning a Cairn Terrier! In this article, we explore who would benefit them as furry friends! Check them here! Read on to discover nine types of people who should consider owning this unique breed. Check this article to learn more about the types of people who are perfect for owning a Poodle dog! Despite how great they are, they take time and commitment. Probably more so than most other breeds. However, even the best dogs come with their own set of challenges. Some traits are very similar, and some vary greatly between dogs, but most share typical traits of the German shepherd breed. Puppies are hard work Despite their irresistible cuteness, German shepherd puppies are hard work. Along with their need for lots of training, they are curious, bold, and into everything that captures their attention. They also love to puppy bite and chew everything that moves, including hands, feet, furniture, personal belongings, and small children. Puppy proofing the house and teaching them what is and is not okay to play bite is not optional when one of these tiny land sharks moves in. They need their people around From young pups to seniors, German shepherds become very bonded with their owners. Adult and senior dogs are happiest when their owners are nearby. If you work, you might consider day care, a dog walker, a dog sitter, or even another dog to keep them company. They are dog athletes and need lots of room to run and play so that they can burn off excess energy. They also have a lot of stamina and require plenty of time to get their exercise needs met. They get bored easily To say German shepherds are smart is an understatement. This breed is very clever and will invent things to keep their mind occupied when not given enough time, training, attention, and exercise. A bored shepherd can easily transform into a mischievous shepherd. They need lots of activities to keep their mind engaged as well as their body. The good news is, when you give them time and attention, they love nothing more than to focus on you. They can be expensive to take care of There is no such thing as a free dog but German shepherds cost more than other dogs to raise. For starters, the larger the dog, the more expensive it is to feed, spay or neuter. Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention costs more for larger dogs. They also tend to require premium foods to keep their sensitive skin and stomachs happy. They can be prone to allergies, breed specific health problems, and certain orthopedic issues that can equal expensive vet bills. When getting a new puppy, pet insurance is something to seriously consider. Prepare to invest in lots of toys German shepherds love to play and are also power chewers. Most can quickly destroy even the toughest toys and chews. When you own a shepherd, gone are the days of a toy lasting for years. They shed on everything German shepherds shed all year round and twice a year, massively shed. They are totally worth the work but may not be the breed for people who like things kept spotless. They have a prey drive German shepherds were bred to be herding dogs so they have a strong prey drive. Which means, they love to chase things. This drive is fun because it makes them totally into a game of fetch or Frisbee. It also means they may love to chase things, including small animals like squirrels, rabbits, cats, hamsters, etc. Can some dogs get along with other small pets? Are some dogs, especially those with stronger working lines harder to train and may be unsafe with small pets? Talk to your breeder or test the dog before bringing it home whenever possible. Socialization is not optional These dogs are powerful, naturally protective, and extremely devoted to their family. They can also be leery and standoffish with strangers. Teaching them how to be confident, greet people, and to prevent unwanted guarding behavior is one of the most important things they need to learn from a young age. Playful and lively Despite being fearless, they are also very playful and love nothing more than having fun with their family. They love to play games, learn new things, go for rides in the car, adventure, and spend time hanging out with the people they love. Loyal to the end There is no breed more loyal than a German shepherd. They live to please and protect those they adore. They are happiest when near their family and will spend every day of their life watching over their loved ones. They make the best companions and friends to those lucky enough to own one. Of that number, a large amount is returned simply because the owners couldn't care for them. This is especially common for puppies that don't receive proper training. You might think that German Shepherds are exempt from these numbers. They're so obedient. They're trained to be police dogs; they're in the military; they're even trained to herd animals on farms. They take a lot of training to get there, though, especially German Shepherd puppies. While adopting a German Shepherd puppy is possibly one of the most rewarding experiences you could ever think of, it's definitely something to think about before taking the plunge. Luckily, we're here to help you learn all you need to know about taking care of puppies and even what you need to know beforehand. Read on to learn all you need to know about taking care of and raising German Shepherd puppies. Also don't forget to check out our custom german shepherd gifts as well! Ensure You'd Like to Adopt a German Shepherd The very first thing you need to consider is whether or not a German Shepherd puppy is going to match your lifestyle. They're a physically demanding breed that requires a lot of regular exercise and stimulation. If they don't get this, you can expect behavioral problems like chewing on and getting into things they shouldn't a common thing for any breed. They're a particularly aloof breed, but they make excellent and watchful family pets. German Shepherds may take time to warm up to strangers and even children, but with proper training and boundary establishment, they're very well-behaved dogs. The two other large things to consider before you decide; how much their care costs and just how big they can get. While some females can be as small as 51 pounds, some males can weigh up to 90 pounds. Typically, females are smaller than males, but German Shepherds are by no means a small breed. Their average height is anywhere from 22 to 26 inches. If you need a size comparison, the average height of a Pomeranian is around 10 inches tall. The other thing to consider is how much they're going to cost not only to adopt but also to care for. Since German Shepherds are typically a large breed, they're going to cost more to feed, transport, and care for on a day-to-day basis. Tips for Picking a Puppy Once you've figured out whether you can handle the financial responsibility of a German Shepherd puppy , it's time to pick out the puppy themselves. Here are a few things to consider, whether you're adopting from a breeder or a shelter. Look for Signs of Abuse and Neglect Abuse or neglect is likely to be more common in shelter puppies, but it's definitely a possibility if you're adopting from a breeder. Some signs of abuse can include: Food aggression or refusing to leave food when called Separation anxiety Antisocial behavior Submission Submission can be a tricky thing to spot at times, but it isn't impossible to detect. Sometimes in it's a dog's nature to be naturally submissive, and it's an important trait to have if they're going to be around established packs. Here are a few signs of abnormal submission that can point to emotional abuse, though: Cowering in fear or hiding when approached Rolling over or walking away with tail tucked between legs when approached Laying down or cowering while urinating These puppies aren't impossible to rehabilitate, but they're going to require patience. Scolding or becoming angry with an abused puppy will only make the problem worse, so it's smart to consider whether or not it's something you can handle. If you're not adopting from a shelter, it's important to ensure the breeder you're looking to work with is a reputable one. Adopting these breeders is an especially important thing you can do to ensure you're getting a healthy and well-cared-for puppy. Look Out for Their Demeanor But also be aware that, while they're still a puppy, you do potentially have some effect on their personality as they grow older. While there are definitely things you might not be able to change how much they enjoy affection, whether or not they like playing for hours or a few minutes , but there are still a lot of things you can affect. The things you can affect usually have to do with their overall temperament. With proper training and boundary-setting, aggressive puppies can be taught to socialize. The same goes for shy or insecure puppies. Curious and hyperactive puppies are already set up for success on the socialization front, but you'll have to show them proper interactions with other dogs and even humans. Training Milestones Once you've decided on a puppy, it's time to start training. These are important guidelines to take into consideration and also important to ensure you can achieve. While this article is going to focus on GSD puppies specifically, they're also milestones to take into consideration no matter what breed of puppy you decide upon. Socialization Socialization is important for any breed because it ensures that you can take your dog out in public safely. It is especially important, however, for German Shepherd puppies from the age of weeks old. As we talked about earlier, this breed is naturally protective of its owners. That's why it's important to establish from an early age which strangers are friendly and what situations are not a threat. The more variety you can provide with your puppy's interactions, the better. This means typical interactions, like going for a walk or visiting the dog park, but also rarer ones. Some examples might be a blind person's white cane that helps them navigate or meeting a person in a wheelchair. While these interactions aren't exactly uncommon to see, if your puppy is unfamiliar with them as they grow older, they might see them as a threat the first time they come across them. The most important thing to remember when it comes to proper socialization, however, is that your puppy will pick up on your cues. This means that confidence is key when it comes to training. If you're nervous the entire time you're attempting to socialize your dog, they're going to notice and become hesitant as well. Ensuring that you're safely exposing your puppy to new sounds, smells, and sights will give you both the confidence needed to live and work together. Crate Training Crate training is a great way to help your puppy avoid developing social anxiety. Like socialization, confidence and safety are crucial to this particular method of training. Your puppy's crate isn't a punishment. In fact, it's usually seen as a safe space for them to go when they want some alone time. To start crate training, begin by placing them in their crate for feeding times and when you sleep at night. It might be difficult when you first start, but it's important to stay consistent, as this shows your puppy that their crate is a place they're safe in. It's also great to leave them in their crate when you leave the house. How long you're gone is going to depend on their age the older they get, the longer they can wait to use the bathroom , but it's still a good way to ensure they're safe when left alone. House Training Crate training is also a great way to supplement house training — especially for GSDs. House training is usually simple for this breed, especially accompanied by supervision, patience, and consistency on the owner's part. When you first bring your puppy home, it's important to take them out at least once an hour, though this number will go down as they get older. Reward them when they use the restroom outside, and don't punish them if they have an accident inside. When you use harsh reinforcement, like shoving their nose in their urine, they're not necessarily going to understand what's going on. Instead, if they have an accident and you catch them in the act, simply pick them up and take them outside. This shows them where they're supposed to go, reinforcing the boundary rather than training from a place of fear. Chewing The same goes for chewing on or getting into items they're not supposed to. Yelling, hitting, or scaring your puppy is not an effective way to train them. Instead — when they're getting into things they shouldn't — remove the item from their possession or move them to a different location while firmly saying "no. In this case, toys are expected to be chewed on. Setting clear boundaries and expectations from day one is not only going to make training your puppy easier, but it's going to make it easier for them to trust you. Obedience Training Starting at three months, obedience training should take place for your puppy. This includes basic commands, impulse control, and teaching them which behaviors are inappropriate for them to exhibit. For impulse control, that means teaching them to stay when food is set in front of them. Inappropriate behaviors will depend on the owner, but this usually means things like excessive barking, digging, chasing especially cats and cars , or even jumping and begging. Establishing trust is important for your dog because the key to obedience training is having their focus be on you. You're the one giving the cue, so they have to be able to trust that you're guiding them appropriately. Having your puppy sit before getting food, being greeted by house guests, playing with a toy, or opening the door to go for a walk is a great place to start. In these situations, the more you can have the puppy's attention on you instead of the impulse, the more effective their training will be. That means lots of positive reinforcement with lots of treats! After 1 Year For many breeds, one year old is considered the "end" of puppyhood, but for a lot of german shepherds , that doesn't come until the age of two to three years old. It's important to continuously reinforce training methods like impulse control, obedience skills, and even possibly advancing to other, more specific, training skills like agility, herding, and even protection work. GSDs are capable of performing all these duties and even excel at them. When you give your puppy something a job to focus on at certain points throughout the day, you give them something to look forward to — dogs of any breed thrive on this. No matter what decision you make, a puppy will make a wonderful addition to any family they're added to — German Shepherd puppies are no exception to this. Overall, the breed is a very loving, loyal, and protective breed. They're going to have a natural affinity for you from the start. If you give them the proper love, affection, and training, you're definitely going to reap the rewards of the decision you made to adopt. Once you decide to adopt, your puppy is going to need a few supplies of its own. Check out our custom german shepherd gifts to show off your love for your puppy no matter where you both choose to venture. Fans of the breed love them for their loyalty, courage, and intelligence. As family pets, they can be taught many things and thrive at being mentally challenged and trained. Since they were bred to work, they have a lot of endurance and energy that needs to be expended each day. Despite being so active, German shepherds also have a softer side. Their level of loyalty to their owners is unsurpassed. They love nothing more than to be near their family and the closer the better, so they can do their job of looking after those they adore. Because they have such a close bond with their owners, they make excellent companions and enjoy going on trips, car rides, walks, hikes, and are always up for an adventure. Anyone wanting to adopt or buy a German shepherd should do their research to see if this magnificent breed fits into their life to avoid problems down the road. Here are 15 things you can expect when you own a German shepherd: 1. Puppy biting When you bring home a German shepherd puppy, you can expect lots of nipping, puppy biting, and mouthing. All puppies explore the world with their mouth and nose, but some new owners are caught by surprise by just how much German shepherd puppies like to nip at their owners. As herding dogs, German shepherds have a high prey drive that results in a desire to herd and gather. Exercise is a must German shepherds are very active and as working dogs have lots of endurance. They are strong, athletic, and agile. They require lots of age appropriate exercise to meet their physical needs. The good news is, exercise can come in many forms. A dog genius German shepherds are very smart and they need to exercise their mind as well as their body. They require training and also need to have fun to be happy and fulfilled. They love to learn but require a strong leader and training to development into the amazing dog they were born to be. A bored German shepherd is a destructive and anxious German shepherd and that includes challenging their mind, training them, and teaching them new things throughout their life. To pay for healthy food German shepherds are notorious for having sensitive skin and stomachs and need high quality dog food to keep them from developing health problems. By investing in and feeding them high quality food, it may help avoid health problems and expensive trips to the vet down the road. A good diet begins in puppyhood and starts with a good quality large breed puppy food. Sweep and vacuum up lots of dog fur German shepherds have a dense coat and shed year-round. To keep up with the dog fur, expect to sweep and vacuum often. If dog fur drives you nuts, they are probably not the breed for you. To groom often Along with sweeping and vacuuming, German shepherds need lots of grooming. A protector German shepherds are very protective of their family and need training and socialization from a young age so they know what you expect of them. As a herding dog, they naturally have a strong guarding instinct and consider it their job to look after their owner. This is great except they must learn how to interact with the world and should not be allowed to guard food, resources, toys, territory, and people. Mess makers Along with their shedding, they are also mess makers! They love to play with their toys and strew them all over the house, drip water all over the floor, roll in the grass, and play in mud and dirt. They will leave their nose art all over your windows and doors and basically leave a trail wherever they go. They have adorable personalities and will do the funniest things to make you smile. They use their body language and vocalizations to communicate their needs. They are masters at telling you when they want to eat, go outside, are frustrated, or want to play. Some will want to pet your dog and some will want you to go away. Owning a German shepherd automatically make you an ambassador of the breed and carries a responsibility to educate the public about how amazing they are. Best friend forever German shepherds are the most loyal breed ever. They will happily spend every day of their life living to be with you, love you, make you happy, and protect you. They are a friend like no other and deserve nothing but the same in return. November 8, In search of a new forever best friend? Not sure what puppy breed works best for you and your family? How do you know if the German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for you and your family? German Shepherd Dogs are a younger breed that started in Germany in by Captain Max Von Stephanitz who sought to create an unmatched herding dog. But as Germany became more and more industrialized, the breed shifted from herding work to police and military training. Hundreds of these dogs made their way to the United States during WWI, one such being a small five-day-old puppy that was rescued from a destroyed kennel in France and brought home to the states to Los Angeles. This puppy later grew up to be one of the most famous four-legged movie stars, Rin Tin Tin, starring in 26 movies, forever making the German Shepherd Dog breed a popular choice in the nation! If you are looking for an attractive dog, look no further! German Shepherd Dogs have beautiful coats, strong muscular builds, a square muzzle, long bushy tail, and a black mask. Some colors like red and black, or tan and black, have distinct markings such as saddle or blanket on their back. However, German Shepherd Dogs come in a variety of colors: sable, silver, liver, panda, solid black, and solid white. What are German Shepherd Dog Personalities like? German Shepherd Dogs can be reserved, often appearing aloof toward new people, but this very loyal breed loves their families and can be very affectionate. While they can be wary of new people and protective of their family, with the right socialization, German Shepherd Dogs can be friendly and easy-going. They are an intelligent and high-energy breed that thrives with a job to do. Due to this, without the proper or consistent amount of stimulating work, they can easily become bored and frustrated. Those feelings could translate into behaviors like barking, howling, or chewing. As they get older, they'll equally enjoy relaxing with you at home and getting up with you to do the next fun activity! If you are a lover of going for long walks or runs, enjoy hiking on the weekends, or trips to the beach depending on where you live, a German Shepherd Dog will gladly trot alongside you! German Shepherd Dogs while they can be independent, do crave to be with their family and offer great companionship. With crate training, your German Shepherd puppy will learn to adapt to being left alone for periods of time without developing separation anxiety, however, this breed thrives with interaction and will do best a puppy parent that can provide them with a balanced amount of alone and accompanied time throughout the day. Like many large breed dogs, German Shepherd Dogs can suffer from some common illnesses including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, degenerative spinal stenosis, and Von Willebrand disease. Thankfully, responsible breeders today have bred out many of these and improved the health of the breed significantly! When you bring home your new German Shepherd puppy, schedule their first veterinarian visit to discuss appropriate health care, proper nutrition and supplements, and exercise. German Shepherd Dogs tend to shed regularly and heavily twice in the year during the Spring and Fall season. With soft undercoats and harsher topcoats, they would do best with regular brushing once a week will help remove their dead fur and maintain healthy skin! Socialization is a must German Shepherd Dogs are natural protectors and benefit greatly from being socialized with other dogs, people, new places, textures, and sounds. When done correctly, s ocialization helps teach your puppy the proper way to greet people, other dogs and create boundaries. During socialization sessions, you can work with your puppy on barking or jumping, which are common puppy behaviors when they are excited or over-stimulated when meeting strangers. And if you're not sure how to do this on your own, hire a local puppy trainer to help set you up for the best success! Consider advanced training to keep them engaged German Shepherd Dogs are very intelligent and have high-prey drives which mean they love to work! Check out these blogs related to puppy training and more! German Shepherds just kind of happened to me. Shepherds are a bit suspicious of strangers. Also, be prepared for your shepherd to pick someone to be her person in your family. In my family, Pyrrha unequivocally picked me. Beware the land sharks! It comes from somewhere deep in their herding heritage, I suppose, but these are very bitey puppies! For this reason, a GSD can be a trying breed with young children, who often become unwitting targets for playful biting. If not addressed, this shyness can transform into fear-based aggression. These dogs are busybodies, and they want to know where you are and what you are doing at ALL times — in the event that your actions could compromise the security of the house and the family. German Shepherds have a double coat, which equals twice as much fur all of your floor, your sofa, your clothes, etc. German Shepherds like to play rough Shepherds have a tendency to rough-house with both people and other dogs. Dog owners with other breeds have told me that it took them a while to realize that our shepherds were playing with their dogs — and not trying to kill them. In my experience, even in play, shepherds like to go for the throat and get into some heavy-duty wrestling. If it hurts your feelings that some people are automatically scared of your dog, a German Shepherd may not be right for you. If you have a German Shepherd, let this motivate you to make your dog a great breed ambassador and help change negative stereotypes. Be prepared for a potentially vocal dog GSDs also have a tendency to be vocal. Other dogs were more barky, especially at strangers walking past our fence or at other dogs. Pyrrha is an uncharacteristically quiet German Shepherd; but our little Eden loves barking, barking just for the fun of it! Be aware of this issue, and be prepared to start training your dog when and how to be quiet. Consider a large number of health issues German shepherds are famous for their litany of health issues. On a range from more benign allergies to life-threatening osteosarcoma, hemangioma , shepherds seem to have them all. The breed even has predispositions to diseases that seem to occur exclusively within the purebred line e. Find a good vet preferably one with shepherd experience , and start taking measures to keep your shepherd trim and healthy. German Shepherds are large, active, athletic, and highly intelligent dogs. What this means is that if they get bored, you are going to seriously regret bringing this fuzzy monster into your house. Try obedience classes, agility, flyball, Schutzhund, herding , nose work, etc. Shepherds can excel at many canine sports and activities! German Shepherd Purebred Puppy If you want a purebred puppy, do your research about the difference between working-line and show-line German Shepherds. This can be a touchy subject for some, but in general, I feel that the bottom line is this: Working-line dogs are sounder and healthier because they are bred to do a job. Start researching how to determine what kind of GSD suits you and your family. Our foster German Shepherd Puppy Trina. The only downside of rescuing a purebred is that you have no health guarantees and no knowledge of their parents or often of their backgrounds. German Shepherd as a companion Pyrrha, for example, appears to be an American-line shepherd bred for companionship by a backyard breeder. Eden, on the other hand , is a German-line shepherd whose parents were imports titled in Schutzhund. They also showed dogs, so she has a more sloped topline than Pyrrha and slightly more exaggerated hocks. German shepherds still rank no. Consider it! Source: Wikimedia Commons. ALL puppies require hard work, devotion, and lots and lots of patience. But the joy they bring?
Apply to Adopt A little about us.Genuine Australian labradoodle puppy breeder since .Located in Monterey, California just two hours south of San Francisco. We are a small in-house breeder specializing in breeding miniature to medium labradoodles from the seeing eye dog Australian lines. We do not ship our puppies but will meet new owners at the airport. We average four to five litters a year. This gives us the time to complete early neurological stimulation starting at three days and desensitizing to fireworks, thunderstorms, etc. We give each litter and each puppy the love and attention it needs during those first irreplaceable eight weeks of your puppy's life. We take great responsibility in giving every puppy the best start in order to grow into a well-adjusted, highly socialized, and healthy member of your family for many years to come. Our puppies are born in our bedroom, raised in our kitchen and get the best of care and lots of handling from their first day. We not only guarantee genetic health but also have very strict requirements for the temperaments of the breeding dogs in our program. Puppies are examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, and micro chipped before going home. About Australian Labradoodles.Australian Labradoodles are beautiful, healthy, allergy and asthma friendly. They were originally bred to be service dogs and not a 'designer' pet. The Labradoodle breed started with a request over thirty years ago by a family needing a seeing eye dog but who also had a family member with asthma. After some research and years of breeding by leading service dog breeders, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor in Australia, the Australian Labradoodle was born. Our top goal is excellent health, fantastic temperament, and service qualities. Just like any other breed that becomes popular, though, some breeders have started breeding for the popularity of these dogs and not for the benefit of the breed itself. So here's how to make sure you're getting the dog you want. Here are some helpful tips to understand what a breeder means when they are using these phrases. The multi-generation Australian Labradoodle, which is the original Labradoodle, has a foundation stock including six different parent breeds. These dogs were developed in Australia, and hence the "Australian" in the name of the dogs. This was a breed that was developed with goals in mind for a low shedding service dog, not a designer dog. The multi-generation Labradoodle has only poodle and lab in its heritage. It does not include the other parent breeds that were originally used by the creators of the breed. These have been primarily developed later in the U. These dogs tend to shed their coat since they are more closely related to the Labrador and often have a wire hair look to them. The "Back Cross" or "F1B" is a dog from an F1 see above mated back to a poodle usually for coat correction. These dogs have not had the multiple generations of Labradoodle mated with another Labradoodle nor the addition of Australian Labradoodle foundation stock or multiple parent breeds. View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. Some F1B Labradoodles are bred back another time to a Poodle in an effort to guarantee a Poodle coat. If high quality dogs are chosen to breed that have the head shape of a Labrador Retriever it is possible to get a puppy that is very similar in many ways to a Labrador, but has the beautiful non-shedding Poodle coat. The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. Its gentle, obedient and intelligent personality combined with a hypoallergenic coat make it ideal for family members with allergies, but it also makes an excellent service or therapy dog. They inherit this trait from their Labrador retriever parent, a breed also known for its outgoing nature. You can trust your labradoodle to form friendships with everyone, from children and older adults to strangers and other puppies. Thanks to their affectionate, sociable personalities, Labradoodles make great pets for first-time owners, families, or anyone looking for a companion. Intelligence Thanks to their poodle parent breeds, Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs. Because Labradoodles are intelligent, they often crave mental stimulation. Labradoodle Puppies Grooming Our Labradoodle puppies for sale have a variety of coat textures that dog owners enjoy, but in general, their low shedding coat needs brushing at least twice a week. According to Global News , Rhys and Mosher's three-year-old valley bulldog, Freya, gave birth to seven healthy puppies, one right after the other, on Jan. Shortly after Freya sat down to rest with her new puppies, the bulldog gave birth to one more puppy. This young canine was born surrounded by a black sac, distinctly different from the translucent sacs the other puppies had. As the married couple cleaned the last puppy off, they realized the canine's light fur had a bright green tint. Audra Rhys Audra Rhys "So we googled it, 'my puppy is green, what's wrong,' and apparently it is very rare, and it has happened a few times all over the world," Mosher told Global News. If the Name Fits: 'Forest' the Green Puppy Born to Golden Retriever According to CNN , light-colored dogs are born green on rare occasions, likely after contact with biliverdin — a green pigment found in bile — while in the womb. The pigment dyes the fur before the puppy is born, and the color fades after the puppy enters the world. Rhys told PEOPLE that Freya's healthy green puppy, who she shares with American bulldog Loki, is already starting to lose her odd coloring and is now "a light lime green. Deafness is quite often caused by what they call the Merle gene. Mila the crazy white deaf dog is white with spots like a dalmatian. She is one of eight puppies. We never had her genetically tested but through research we are pretty sure that is why she is deaf. She listens better than some of the other Bullies we have had. Click to expand.Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I know with Great Danes, it's very discouraged to breed "merlequin" colored Danes due to genetic issues they pass to their pups. I was told don't know it it is misinformation or not that white or mostly white dogs with both white ears are usually deaf. I had somehow obtained a jack russel pup that had both white ears and he was deaf. At the time, my life and the people in it were not prepared to handle a small deaf little puppy and for the lil guy's safety people kept letting him out of the yard when he was outside, no way to call him back since he couldn't hear and keep him out of the street , I ended up placing him with a single mother who's son was also deaf. I know my alphabet and a few words in sign language, I was able to sign enough to the boy that the dog was just like him and the boy immediately began using sign language to the puppy. I have never in my life seen a little boy so happy! Was soooo adorable! Had my life been less chaotic and the people in my life more respectful and responsible I would have been able to keep the lil guy. Learning more and more about my Shirley Wigglebutt and the bulldog breed characteristics and stubbornness, it doesn't surprise me that your Mila listens better than some of your others! What a treasured gem. She's a beauty for sure! Share on Whatsapp via Getty The owners of a bulldog got quite the shock when she gave birth to a bright green puppy. Trevor and Audra Mosher who live in Canada were left in shock when one of the eight puppies born in the litter had green fur. Sharing an image of the newborn pup on Facebook, Trevor wrote, "Our lil green puppy apparently is a rare thing to see. Our lil green puppy apparently is a rare thing to see. The couple explained to Global News that unlike her brothers and sisters, the green pup was born in a black sac, as opposed to transparent. As rare as it seems to be, I feel very lucky to have witnessed it and be a part of it. I know you hear stories about things like that but to be there and witness it, it was good" he said. Location Information for Illinois Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. Females Who ever you choose, will love you. Here at Hillside Standard Poodles we offer both male and female Standard Poodle puppies in a variety of colors. All Poodles bought from Hillside Standard Poodles are sold with spayed or neutered contracts. You've asked many questions and seen how the puppies are raised, you've met the breeder and the parents of the puppies and you're ready to make your choice. Your pick should be based on a matching personality with the puppy in question. How does the puppy react to you and your family, and kids? The sex of the puppy should be your last consideration. Most people have a huge misconception on sexes and personalities. Most feel a female is a sweet, loving dog who is a caretaker of puppies and children. Female dogs are nice; I like my girls and I'm pretty sure they like me. They come to me and get attention, and then they move away and are content to lie on the other side of the room. Perhaps this matches your personality perfectly -- maybe you want a dog that isn't overly affectionate. Girls take training seriously, and most are very good at obedience. Females can be alpha dogs just as easily as a male can. Spayed females, of course, make a much better family pet than un-spayed females do. Boys tend to get a bad rap because, in your mind, you remember the neighbor's disgusting unaltered male dog lifting his leg on every bush in the neighborhood and doing nasty "boy" things. Male dogs that are intended to be family pets NEED to be neutered at an early age 5 months old , however waiting a year is best. When you do YOUR part, you have an absolutely wonderful family member. They usually squat to piddle, never develop any type of nasty habit and are extremely loving dogs. Where your girls will get their attention and go lie down, a boy will stay near you. He likes to be with his person, he likes to be loved on; he is "devoted" to you. Yes, he takes his training seriously. But then he likes to have FUN, he likes to play in the yard -- he doesn't like to take life too seriously all the time! So, before you choose a dog based on its sex only, consider the other elements. Are you the type of person who likes an independent dog, or one who prefers a dog that worships the ground you walk on? Of course there is the exception to every rule and the amount of time you spend with your puppy will make a huge difference in his or her personality. Our suggestion is to spend time with your potential choice at the breeder's, but don't ignore a potential 'perfect match' for you because it may not be the sex you originally sought! City skyline. At what age is a Poodle fully grown? Poodles are considered fully grown adults at two years old and tend to show emotional signs of maturity, like a calmer nature, around 18 months. At a year old, most Poodles will have reached their final height or very close to it. However, most Poodles will require a full two years to fill out their chest and reach their final weight. Image Source: Pexels How big should a 6-month-old Poodle be? A six-month-old male Poodle will weigh around 41 to 48 pounds, while a six-month-old female Poodle will weigh about 28 to 34 pounds. Both male and female Poodles at this age stand at around 18 to 22 inches tall, which for some Poodles is already their full adult height. Pro Tip: Check out this ultimate pet parent guide with 39 dog care tips on pet first aid kits, puppy-proofing practices, training, veterinary appointments, and more! How much bigger will my Poodle get? There are a few ways to assess how much bigger your Poodle will get. The first is age. If your Poodle is less than a year old, they still have significant growth left! If your Poodle is between one and two years old, they are likely still filling out a bit, but are probably at their adult height. Do they still look oversized next to their legs and body? If this is the case, they are probably still filling out as this is a classic puppy feature! A Poodle puppy will rarely grow larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you an idea of their maximum size. What is the size of a full-grown Poodle? According to the American Kennel Club Official Poodle Standards , an adult male Poodle is 60 to 70 pounds while an adult female Poodle weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. By these standards, full-grown Poodles will be over 15 inches tall when measuring from the ground to the highest point of their shoulders while standing. Most Standard Poodles will stand between 18 and 24 inches tall. Smart lifestyle choices are essential in keeping your Poodle happy and healthy. The Veterinary Centers of America recommend a long walk, jog, or intense play to fulfill their daily exercise needs. Poodles were bred as retrievers and, as such, are keen on games involving retrieving like fetch. Many Poodles also enjoy swimming. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without their pet parents realizing it. Poodles are not overly prone to weight issues with a balanced diet, but their coat can disguise weight changes. Their full coats also require regular upkeep like brushing and combing every other day, professional grooming every six weeks or so, and watching for potential eye problems. Poodles are prone to weeping eyes and eye irritation from lashes or hair, so keeping their eye area free of long hair is ideal. As a purebred dog breed, Poodles are more susceptible to genetic health problems. Many of these genetic health problems can be screened for early on using DNA technology. These early screenings can help you and your veterinarian prevent and minimize health complications from these genetic diseases. A bove all else, regular veterinary care is the best way to make sure your Poodle stays healthy. Between health screenings, regular veterinary care, bloodwork, x-rays , dental cleanings , and more, your veterinarian is your best resource in caring for your precious Poodle puppy. Be aware, vet visits can quickly become expensive - especially when immediate treatment or surgery is needed for an emergency or illness. With many treatments and surgeries costing thousands of dollars, this can quickly put pet parents in a pinch should the worst happen to their pet. Poodles are larger dogs, which can also increase the price of treatment. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance reimburses you for out-of-pocket veterinary costs and provides a safety net should the worst happen to your Poodle. As purebred dogs, Poodles are more prone to genetic health problems, like bloat or hip dysplasia, which can quickly become expensive to treat. Final Considerations Poodle puppies grow into elegant, proud dogs who are true aristocrats of the dog kingdom. We know how much your Poodle pup means to you and that they deserve the best! The negative characteristics that male Poodles exhibit are: Trying to show dominance over other animals Tending to devote themselves to only one family member and ignore others Being rather demanding and taking up lots of attention Tending to weigh more and growing bigger than female poodles The Differences Between the Two Genders As previously discussed, there are countless differences between male and female Poodles. Males tend to be more dependent on their owners while acting more playful and friendly than girl Poodles. At the same time, girl Poodles tend to be smarter than boys and more self-reliant. Furthermore, male Poodles are more eager to please their family members and tend to act very affectionately. Girl poodles can be friendly and playful but less so than the boys. There are also differences in their size and weight. However, the height between the two genders does not really differ. The heights are nearly identical. At six months of age, a girl Poodle tends to weigh around 21 pounds, while a male poodle weighs 24 pounds. Both are at a height of about seven inches at this age. At one year of age, all Poodles reach a height of approximately 11 inches. At full growth, males and females reach about 17 inches in height. The males tend to weigh 57 pounds, while a female Poodle reaches only about 42 pounds when fully grown. Male Poodles may also favor one person in your family over others. Boy Poodles are easier to train because they love to please their owner. Girl Poodles might be more stubborn and challenging in terms of training. A Poodle puppy swims in pool. Some Poodles love water from puppyhood! Male poodles tend to get along well with other pets as well as children, as they are very playful. Boy Poodles generally do better with kids than females, which are more independent and somewhat less friendly. Nonetheless, either gender should work with kids, as both boys and girls can be playful and kind. Does Neutering Improve Poodle Behavior? Neutering a male dog or spaying a female dog does provide behavioral benefits. For instance, both boy and girl dogs are much less likely to run away from your home and begin looking to mate with other canines. Male dogs tend to hurt themselves, trying to jump over fences in order to spend time with a female in heat. By removing the testosterone hormone from your dog, the poodle is less likely to be aggressive , dominant, and stubborn. Dog bites are also much more likely to occur among unneutered dogs who are territorial. As such, neutering helps improve Poodle behavior. At the end of the day, the gender of your Poodle may not matter as much as its training and socialization. Magic clearances posted soon Magic is our gorgeous, big, deep red, standard poodle who at just 10 mo. This puppy is absolutely gorgeous. He is stately when not being a goofy teenager , he is sweet, he LOVES people and everyone he meets, he is great with the little bitty poodles when around them and he is doing great in his obedience and conformation classes. I have a very good feeling that they will both do very, very, well. Last year we missed the shows because I had a dog due to give birth that weekend. I will do whatever I need to do to get Magic and his sister in those shows this year. He is a beautiful tri-parti-color and has an outstanding, confident and outgoing temperament. We are very proud of our boy Solo and look forward to using him for many, many years. Flyer is the sweet, tiny red son of our Rusty and Cameo both retired. Weighing in at about 5 pounds you would think he was frail and needy — quite the opposite! He may be little but he is a robust, healthy, super-affectionate little boy. He loves everyone he meets and is also quite curious and friendly with even the biggest dogs he has been exposed to. At right: At 4 months of age with his owner, Richard. Houston is a beautiful red standard poodle belonging to Dr. Houston is the total package, combining solid working aptitude with grace, conformation and a wonderful, tolerant, accepting personality. Typically, 2 out of 5 Vinny puppies will mature 5 to 7 pounds. The other puppies may be another few pounds depending on the size of the dam. Vinny is a gorgeous red sable and produces both red sable, solid apricot, apricot with white markings and phantom — patterned puppies. His puppies are typically friendly, outgoing and full of life. Vinny is very sweet and sensitive. He is a sable phantom hard to see but the patterns are there and carries the abstract patterns and colors in his DNA traits. His babies tend to be sweet-natured, laid-back, a little on the pudgy side and easy to live with. He just turned two-years old and we are working on getting his official OFA results organized and posted. Plus, more clearances. Red 7 lb. He is an exceptional little dog. He is calm, observant, willing and tolerant. He is an 8 year-old golden retriever in an itty bitty dog suit. Arlie is an excellent example of what we strive to produce here at Powder Valley Poodles — a healthy, beautiful, orthopedically and genetically superior dog who is tolerant, takes direction easily and can adapt to just about any circumstances or environment. There are so many factors and considerations when choosing a puppy. Here we will take a look at the differences between male and female Poodles so that you can have a better idea as to which would be right for you. There has been controversy over their origin, as they are the national breed of France, but it is believed that they actually originated in Germany. Poodles are a long-lived breed with a lifespan of 10 to 18 years. They are medium to large-sized and range from 45 to 70 pounds in weight and 15 to 24 inches in height. Poodles bond very quickly with their human companions and are known for their intense loyalty. Poodles are water dogs, so you can expect them to have an affinity for it. They will thrive on exercise, activities, and learning new things. This breed rarely acts aggressive and is typically shy around strangers. They are not as demanding as some other high-energy and intelligent breeds and tend to do well indoors if their exercise needs are met and can make great dogs for apartments or houses with smaller yards. This does not mean a male Poodle will not love and adore his whole family, he may just favor one particular person. Male Poodles are often more affectionate than females and tend to be more eager to please. Because of this, they are typically easier to train as well. You may notice that males will seek out more attention and can be a bit more demanding of it than females are. Unaltered males can develop typical male dog habits such as marking their territory, showing dominance over other males, and humping, especially if they are not well trained. If you do not plan on breeding your male Poodle, it is highly recommended you get him neutered as soon as possible to prevent these unwanted behaviors. Training Poodles are very intelligent dogs and can be very easy to train. You will see a lot of Poodles as service dogs and therapy dogs for this reason. Males can be easier to train since they are typically more eager to please. As they are highly intelligent and energetic, it is best to be consistent with training and utilize positive reinforcement. You will want to keep training interesting and reward-based as they love to stimulate their brains. Dedicating time to train your Poodle will only grow your bond stronger. This agile and graceful dog will excel in activities such as water sports, agility, tracking, and obedience. As with any breed though, some health issues can occur. In Poodles, it is not uncommon to see luxating patellas, hip dysplasia , and several eye disorders, especially in older age. Caring for male and female Poodles is pretty standard. You will want to ensure they are getting their daily exercise and remain both mentally and physically stimulated. You will either need to be experienced at grooming their coats or have a professional groomer handy. You will want to be established with a reputable veterinarian for regular health check-ups, dental care, and any issue that may turn up. Poodles will require high-quality dog food that is age-appropriate. These dogs can expend a lot of energy, especially if you plan on involving them in sports or regular activities. Image Credit: Lucas Seijo, Shutterstock Breeding Male dogs typically become fertile starting around 6 months of age and will reach full sexual maturity within 12 to 15 months. Healthy unaltered males can remain fertile and continue breeding well into old age. If you are interested in becoming a breeder, having the knowledge and education to do so is very important. Regular health checks and careful breeding to ensure top-quality dogs are vital to the breed. If you are looking to get a male Poodle as a pet, it is best to look into neutering as soon as he becomes of age. Neutering can prevent many behavioral and health problems. It is best to discuss the process with your veterinarian and be prepared for the expense. The good news is that males are much less expensive to alter than females. Pros Affectionate and eager to please Loyal and loving More prone to stress and anxiety Can exhibit unwanted behaviors related to sexual maturity Female Poodle Overview Image Credit: Tubuna, Pixabay Personality Female Poodles tend to lean more toward the independent side. They do make wonderful companions but are typically not as loving and affectionate as their male counterparts. Females can keep more of a distance and may not enjoy being touched and snuggled like a male will. Surprisingly, they can be more territorial, protective, and wary of strangers. Unlike males, they tend to share their love and loyalty with the entire family rather than just one person. You can expect your female to display alpha behaviors and assert their dominance. If there are other dogs in the home, a female Poodle will most likely see herself as the boss and will not be shy about displaying her feelings. Training As mentioned, Poodles in general are extremely intelligent and easy to train. That being said, with females you may find that they are more difficult to train than males. Their independent dispositions, stubbornness, and need for dominance can make them more of a challenge. You will need to get to know your dog well to figure out a training regiment that works for both you and her. These graceful, athletic dogs will of course respond well to positive reinforcement and consistency. Like the males, females will also thrive in agility, obedience, water sports, and many other activities. If given the proper care and nutrition, you can expect your Poodle to live anywhere from 10 to 18 years. Females are susceptible to the same genetic health conditions that males are. A proper diet and daily exercise are essential for your Poodle to thrive. Females have the same grooming needs that males do, though you may want to primp them a bit with feminine accessories as some owners enjoy doing. Breeding Female Poodles can experience their first heat cycle as young as 6 months of age. She can become pregnant as soon as she has her first heat cycle but if you plan on breeding, she should be at least 2 years old before she is bred. Some unaltered females will continue having heat cycles their entire lives, while others will have their heat cycles slow down significantly or even stop as they age. It is highly recommended to never breed a female that is older than 6 years of age. When a female is retired from breeding, she should be spayed immediately to prevent any accidental pregnancies. As with males, if you plan on having your female Poodle as a pet only, it is best to get her spayed as soon as she is of age and preferably before the first heat cycle. Spaying a female is great for their health, as older unaltered females can experience mammary tumors, female cancers, and uterine infections. If you are not a reputable breeder, spaying is the best option. Prices will vary depending on the breeder but there is generally no price difference between males and females. It is important to find a reputable Poodle breeder and avoid any backyard breeders or puppy mills for both ethical reasons and the sake of the breed. Rescuing is a great option to consider as well. You can search your area for a Poodle rescue and can get matched with the perfect dog for you. Rescues typically come fully vetted and at a much lower cost. Male Poodles tend to be more playful, lovable, and trusting. They are more likely to be better at getting along with other dogs and household pets. Because females are more independent and like to assert their dominance, they may be less likely to tolerate other pets. Regardless of sex, early socialization and training are essential for your dog. This will help ensure they know what is expected of them as your companion and can thrive in your home. Properly and cautiously introducing your dog to other dogs and animals at a young age will help interactions be much more successful. Now it is time for you to decide which sex will work best for you. As you now know, male and female Poodles have some pretty significant differences. Keep in mind that each dog is different and when you bring a puppy home, their training and socialization can truly help shape them into the dog they become. Both male and female Poodles have some wonderful traits and in the right environment, can make wonderful pets. Another interesting read:. You have done your research and found the right breeder. One question you are likely to be asked is are you looking for a male puppy or female? This could lead you to ask what is the difference between the two? Male poodles are more affectionate, playful, and easier to train due to their intense desire to please their owners. Female poodles tend to be more independent, stubborn, and willful than their male poodle counterparts. However, with poodles, it can often be the males that are more affectionate and loving and the females that are more dominant and challenging of authority. However, it is essential to spend time with any puppy to ensure its personality is right for you. Despite the regal appearance you often see in highly groomed poodles , they often have a very goofy streak. They love to play games of any kind. They are also fond of people and like to please those they have bonded to. These character traits combine to make a dog that is easily trained. It can also make them excitable. A well-trained and exercised poodle will have a calm disposition, as long as the exercise is enough to burn off the naturally high levels of energy that poodles have. It is a debate whether the smaller toy and miniature poodles are more high-strung or the larger standard size. Their high energy levels lead them to be naturally athletic. Combined with their intelligence, poodles often do well in agility competitions. Poodles are protective of home and family. They will often bark when strangers approach your house. They can be standoffish with strangers, taking a while to warm up. However, they are warm and loving with their family members. They learn fast, both good and bad habits, so it is essential to be careful about what you are training them to do. Many of these behaviors have to do with exerting dominance and marking territory. Male poodles are not different. Male poodles NEED to be neutered by age 5 months to ensure they do not engage in these typical male territorial behaviors. Male poodles are more dependent on their owners. They will often bond with one person and not the entire family. They will love the family, but they will choose one family member they prefer. They can be more sensitive to stress and are more empathetic. Because of this empathetic bond, some poodles have been trained as service dogs. Male poodles are often more affectionate, playful, and easier to train, including housebreaking. This is often due to their increased desire to please their owners. They are very attentive and can be quite demanding of attention if you do not give them enough. Many breeders prefer owning male poodles as pets and will often miss the boys from the litters after they are sold. Female Poodle Behaviors Female poodles tend to be more independent. They are cute, smart, and affectionate, but not nearly as much as a male typically. Female poodles can be more distant, typically seek less attention. They often want to be near people, but not necessarily touching them, unlike male dogs. Female dogs can also be more territorial and protective. It is vital to make sure strangers are introduced carefully. Female dogs often share their loyalty with the whole family. They are less prone to stress about significant life events, such as a new baby in the family or moving. However, they are also often more stubborn and willful. They can care less about people-pleasing if they have decided they want something. Female poodles can display alpha behaviors if they are not spayed. Some female poodles will also try and dominant their owners. They can stubbornly resist obedience training. They are often more like a friend you spend time with but are not affectionate with. Poodles as Working Dogs When you look at the smaller sizes, it may be hard to believe, but poodles were originally bred as hunters. Their innate athletic abilities come from this breeding still today. Because they are energetic, lovable, intelligent, and highly trainable, poodles have been used in a wide array of jobs, from circus performers to hunting retriever dogs. Their loyalty has led to standard poodles being used as military and police dogs. When put with other trained dogs, they are often able to learn what is expected by learning from watching the other dogs. This means they can be quickly trained in a variety of settings. Poodles have been used as service dogs for the disabled and as therapy dogs. They seem to be empathetic and can sense their owners sometimes need before the owner does. Working Male Poodles Male poodles have been many traits that can make them excellent service dogs. They do not see it as a job, but as taking care of the person they are bonded to. This can help decrease isolation and depressed mood. It will also keep the person busy and give them a purpose. Working Female Poodles Female poodles often make excellent therapy dogs because they are able to go into high-stress environments and not be overwhelmed. They often do not become stressed out like male dogs when they are around chronic illness, patients in pain, and almost any therapy job you can imagine. Because they tend to bond to groups, they can also interact better with a larger number of people than a male poodle. Choosing a Poodle Puppy When selecting a puppy, you need to not make a decision based just on the sex of the puppy, but on its personality. Taking time with the puppy while it is still with its litter can help you see how they interact with their littermates, mother, and breeder. A puppy that sits off to the side by itself is likely to be more reserved regardless of its sex, while one that bounds out to meet you is likely going to be boisterous and attention-seeking. Observe the physical condition of the entire litter, but also more closely exam the puppy you are considering. The nose should be cold and wet, but not running. The puppy should have clean ears with no odor, straight teeth, and not over or underbite. Seeing their living area can help you determine if they have been well cared for. Is the bedding clean and sanitary? Puppies that have been raised in clean environments are typically healthier and easier to potty train. This can be important if you choose a female puppy that might be more resistant to training, especially if raised in dirty living conditions. A great behavioral training course can really help your resistant poodle to potty train more easily. I found a fantastic video training system called Brain Training for Dogs. With this training, I was able to easily potty train my dog Angus. I really loved the online community where I could communicate with other dog owners to get training ideas or help with the whole training process. This is an awesome program and crazy inexpensive! Check it out here to see more detailed information. Cost of Male and Female Poodles Poodles are often one of the more expensive purebred dogs. Typically the purchase price is about the same for males and females. Females may cost slightly more if they come already spayed because the cost of spaying is often more than getting a male dog neutered. When purchasing an unaltered puppy, the cost is usually the same. Just remember to get the puppy spayed or neuter by months old to help prevent dominant behaviors. Be prepared that the spay costs will be higher. I wrote this article on why Poodles are so expensive. Children and Poodles Poodle, both males, and females can be a wonderful companions for children. Care needs to be taken with Toy Poodles as they are the smallest, most delicate variety of the breed. Children can easily break one of their bones or seriously injure them without meaning to if they are not properly supervised. Children need to be taught how to approach and interact with all dogs, but especially one that is in your home. Children should be taught to never approach a dog that is eating or sleeping. Children should never be left unsupervised with a dog, no matter how friendly. Even the nicest dog can bite if they are injured bad enough or in enough pain. Small children often do not mean to harm the dog, they just have not fully learned how to interact. Important Considerations in Choosing a Male or Female Poodle When buying a poodle, there are several things you need to consider besides just the sex of the puppy. Even though on average, males and females do show some differences in personality, they all have particular care needs. Poodles that are not properly trained will often come to believe they are the alpha dog of the family. The smaller the dog, the more likely this is will occur. By teaching your dog obedience skills and manners, you are showing them that you are the leader of the pack, the alpha dog. Remember, this is especially true of females poodles who tend to exert dominance more than males. A bored poodle creates an unhappy owner. Poodles must be kept active both physically and mentally. Obedience training, agility training, playing games can all help keep your poodle happy, healthy, and prevent them from finding destructive or mischievous ways to entertain themselves. This is true, regardless of the sex of the dog. Boys do tend to be more focused on their owners. But even the most affectionate male will get bored while you are at work. Owning a poodle is a commitment of time or money to meet their grooming needs. Most poodle owners have their dogs professionally groomed every three to six weeks. Poodles have coats that require lots of upkeep to stay beautiful and healthy. Some people learn to groom their dogs. Although this saves money, it can be very time-consuming. Poodles can have weepy eyes that resulted in stained hair surrounding their eyes and face. To help with this, their faces can be gently wiped down daily with pet wipes or a washcloth dipped in warm water. Poodles can be prone to specific health and temperament problems. Always buy your poodle, or any dog, from a reputable breeder. They will test for genetic diseases and check for temperament problems prior to putting any puppy for sale. Final Thoughts Poodles are extremely intelligent dogs that can be a great addition to any family. With proper care and training, they can add love, laughter, and fun. Males and female poodles are easy to train, protective, and enjoy interacting with people. In many ways, they are more alike than different. However, it is crucial to know the differences to make sure you purchase the right puppy for you. Male poodles tend to be more docile, affectionate, and loyal to one family member. Female poodles can exhibit more dominance, be faithful to the family, and be more stubborn. However, these statements are generalizations and not right for each specific male and female. When choosing a puppy, it is important to spend time with the puppy to truly determine its personality. Using sex can be a starting guideline, but your final decision should be based more on the individual traits of the puppy. I hope you found it helpful. Is the Pug the Right Breed for you? Low Maintenance: Infrequent grooming is required to maintain upkeep. No trimming or stripping needed. Constant Shedding: Routine brushing will help. Be prepared to vacuum often! Patience and perseverance are required to adequately train it. Slightly Active: Not much exercise is required to keep this dog in shape. Owners who are frequently away or busy might find this breed suitable for their lifestyle. Good for New Owners: This breed is well suited for those who have little experience with dog ownership. Good with Kids: This is a suitable breed for kids and is known to be playful, energetic, and affectionate around them. Care Though playful and rambunctious, the Pug is a low-maintenance companion, making it ideal for older owners. Because they are a small, quiet breed and are relatively inactive when indoors, they are a good choice for apartment dwellers as well. Light sleepers may also want to invest in a pair of ear plugs — Pugs are prone to snoring. Note: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. These dogs love to eat, eat, eat. This, combined with their small stature, puts them at risk for obesity. As a Pug owner, you must show great restraint. Do not indulge him with food. Feed appropriate portions, limit treats and encourage exercise. However, children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer will be disappointed with a Pug. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and pets. Properly trained and socialized, the Pug enjoys the companionship of dogs, and can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals and more over all my puppies like to play with their toys , kids and other pets ok What Kind Of Food? Generally speaking, puppy food is higher in protein and enriched with vitamins, minerals, and fats essential for growth—that is, when compared to dog food made by the same manufacturer. Still, ingredients across brands can vary greatly. In most cases, you get what you pay for. Consider breed-formulated food. Large-breed puppy formulas help bigger pups grow at a rate gradual enough that they have time to develop strong bones and joints. And, yes, medium-breed formulas aim somewhere in between. This passion and quality for excellence is seen through our home.Is it really safe for the puppy? I receive many inquiries on the process of shipping a puppy— individuals often wonder if it is safe and how it works. How long does it take? This is how I explain the shipping process to individuals to help them feel more at ease with the process of getting a puppy: Shipping a Puppy Is Very safe: See Below Details Shipping a puppy by itself to a new location always sounds cruel and embarrassing, but actually I think it is harder for us than the puppy s. With my many years of shipping experience, I know for a fact that all of the pups are well taken care of. So if you stop and think about it, the airlines are not going to mistreat the puppy s for fear of lawsuits and customer dissatisfaction. I tape puppy s food and feeding instructions to the top of the crate and put frozen water in the crate, so it will gradually thaw out for the puppy s and the puppies are offered food along the ride. The average flight is approximately 2 to 5 hours. I always ask about any delays or layovers and know the exact times and departures of the flights, so I know where the pup is and am able to give you the information as well. The pup will arrive the same day as it is sent—usually a few hours. What about shipping in the winter —is it not too cold? Puppies can be shipped safely between 20 and 85 degrees—AA rules. All puppies ride in the belly of the plane where the temperature is kept at a comfortable 70 degrees—same as for the passengers—and they are the last on and first off the plane. Shipping during this time of year is completely safe and there is no problem so we need not to be afraid about that. The only thing different about this time of year is that the airlines can be strict on the minimum temperature at each location which is really good for the puppy s even though the plane is always kept at 70 degrees. I believe it is mainly for their liability and protection. Likewise, in the summertime—they will not ship if temperatures are too hot along the way. Most shippers specialized in shipping pets will use a temperature regulation crate called an electronic crate. These type of crates are used anytime since they can regulate the temperature to the one best for the puppy s travel What is involved in the shipping process? Since I am 30 minutes from my nearest airport and do not charge extra for delivery like most breeders, I try to make each trip count as much as possible by taking multiple puppies at a time while striving to accommodate to your specified times. So if you are interested in having one of the pups after all amounts have been received, I am able to book the pup. I will need to know the day s and time s you are able to pick up the puppy s at your nearest airport, and your home address and phone number. Usually, I can only book a flight a day in advance so they are aware of the temperatures for shipping. Our Customer Reviews Hello, Tuna was a blessing to our family this year. I retired from teaching after 34 years and with all three children grown I decided to pursue this adventure by purchasing my first labradoodle. Marley joined our home as a puppy, became a Canine Good Citizen, and continued on to pass her evaluation enabling her to be registered as a therapy dog with Pet Partners. Miniature goldendoodles are a hybrid between the poodle and golden retriever. Our breeding dogs must pass extensive health testing to become part of our program. Labradoodle and Goldendoodle Temperaments Goldendoodles and Australian Labradoodles are incredibly social, intelligent, and equally loving. Doodles love people and animals alike, coupled with their low to non-shed qualities, it makes them the perfect family pet. Because of their social nature it would be a punishment to leave a doodle alone for long periods of time without human contact. Furthermore, we encourage you to consider that dogs, like humans, are happiest with a mate, so in their case…another dog. With this in mind, you may want to consider having two dogs so they can keep one another company. We humans are great company but dogs are happiest with another canine companion.

She is already so comfortable here and so attached. She gets so excited every time she sees us. And she has such a sweet disposition Everything goes for her. She just rolls with it. She loves to play and has lots of playful energy when she chases behind a toy or plays tug of war. But she loves to cuddle too, and she can busy herself well too without complaint. Yesterday we left her home when we went on a walk and she never barked or whined and was fast asleep when we returned. She accepted her crate as if she had never known any other place to rest. She just crawls in there and rests when she is tired. And when she wakes up, she quietly plays until we take her out of the playpen. Her potty training is going well. A couple of accidents here and there, but most of the time we catch her before anything happens, and she always does her business right away when we put her on the grass patch we have on the patio. She is getting a treat when she does her business. So, she actually figured out that if she spares some pee and squats several times, she will get several treats. Only One treat for the first time, everything after does not get rewarded any more. Wow, I have never seen a puppy learning that fast. And loving to learn. Being really food driven helps. I could not think of a better quarantine buddy to brighten up our day. I think she will be an amazing therapy dog who brightens up the day if many more people. Some stressful days ahead of you, I am sure. And you are the best puppy mom I have ever encountered. Lots of love to your whole beautiful family! This cross is meant to produce a smaller version of a Golden Retriever that retains the classic Golden look and their characteristic friendly and sweet temperament. Mini Golden Retrievers tend to maintain a temperament very similar to Golden Retrievers. They tend to have a sweet, open, and friendly nature. Mini Goldens get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. These dogs tend to make great family pets and can also be found working as service dogs or therapy dogs. Due to their smaller size, the Miniature Golden Retriever is a highly adaptable dog breed. As long as they get enough exercise, they are happy in apartments as well as larger homes with yards. They also do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Because these dogs are so people-oriented, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time as they would much rather be an active member of the family. For Mini Golden Retrievers, these could include elbow dysplasia, heart issues, eye disease, and hip dysplasia. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and checking out available health clearances or tests can help allay potential health concerns. All of the dog breeds in the cross for a Mini Golden Retriever are highly trainable. So, these dogs tend to be highly trainable, intelligent, and eager to please their owners. They tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. They respond best to positive training methods focused on praise, play, and reward. Although the aim is to have the Miniature Golden Retriever look just like a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, there will be variance in the coats because it is a mixed dog breed. You may have puppies that look identical to a Golden Retriever or you may have puppies with tightly curled or wavy coats from their Poodle or Spaniel parents. With the Poodle in the cross, there may be a chance of a low-shedding coat, but you will want to be prepared for a dog that will shed moderately year-round and that requires regular brushing and bathing with the occasional professional grooming session. Floppy ears tend to be more prone to ear infections, but regular checks and careful cleaning can help prevent them. Dental care for dogs is so important. But, it is often overlooked, which is why dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Miniature Golden Retriever is likely to be a high energy dog that requires plenty of exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks, plus playtime and some extra activity should be sufficient for this dog. They will likely enjoy any activity that means they get to do things with you, which means they may enjoy hiking with you, taking trips to the dog park , swimming, or even training to compete in dog sports. A fully-grown Miniature Golden Retriever usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Mini Golden Retriever generally lives years. Dwarfism does occur in Golden Retrievers, which results in a smaller Golden Retriever and can also cause additional health concerns. Meeting the parent breeds in person and asking to see health tests can help you verify that you have a Mini Golden Retriever. Miniature Golden Retriever Puppies for Sale.
