If black, puppy has markings outside of the normal pattern for a parti puppy. Markings can range from silver, light tan, to dark brown, to red. These markings are found over the eyes, on the sides of the face, on the chest, on all four legs and feet, and under the tail. There is no white on the puppy or the white is very minimal. Unlike a phantom puppy, there is white present somewhere on the puppy. It is most common to only have white on the chest and sometimes the feet. These puppies most closely resemble a bernese mountain dog in their color patterns. It is more rare to get the white on the face with perfect berner markings, so please understand if leaving a deposit, you could be waiting a very long time for a puppy like this. The two non-traditional tri-colors we produce are sables and brindles. A sable is when the outer hair is a darker shade than the hair underneath. These puppies are a different color when they are shaved down. They commonly have places where their hair tends to stay darker like on the ears or tail. They may or may not have phantom markings and can have varying amounts of white. Brindle is when the puppy has stripes of different colors on their body. If all these colors werent confusing enough as it is, you can also have a sable brindle combination where the puppy has the stripes, but the hair underneath is still lighter too. These puppies will have varying sizes of patches. Several colors of hair create the "blue" and "red" color that these babies are known for. One puppy could appear to be several colors as its base coat. No two babies are ever the same!!! The phantom merles have those distinct phantom markings that we love so much! On average, these babies will appear to be three or more colors! These babies have large patches of distinct white, not just small spots of white hair mixed in which is common in merles. These puppies can appear to be five or more colors. The are the most unique color out there and are something extra special!!! A little about merles: Standard sized merle bernedoodles are especially hard to find. They are one of the few colors that are auctually harder to find in Standard size than mini. The reason being that standard sized merle standard poodles are difficult to find. The merle color is very uncommon in all poodle sizes. They can usually be readily found in toy and mini sized poodles. The toy poodle is then bred to a standard sized female to create the Moyen or medium sized poodle. This poodle as the mother cannot safely be bred to a bernese mountain dog. She will be far too small. If this moyen poodle is the father, the puppies will be a larger mini or very small standard size. These are not Large standard sized puppies that we are hoping to have. This merle moyen poodle should be bred again to a standard poodle in order to bring as much size as possible to the offspring, and then that puppy could safely breed for standard sized puppies. It takes several generations to safely and correctly breed for True Standard sized babies. It takes many years to create the perfect poodle to make these babies happen! We maintain the right to refuse sale to anyone we do not feel comfortable placing a puppy with for any reason. This right also extends to people who have already left a deposit with us, in which this is the only case that a deposit will be refunded. We want only the best for our babies and if we believe you may not be a fit home for one of our babies for any reason, we will exercise this right. Thank you for understanding. Life Span Did You Know? The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article. Email: rockvalepuppies gmail. Stahlstown, PA Phone: Website: www. Tabitha breeds AKC Pugs and has puppies available throughout the year. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.
Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Uncovering the miracle of Frenchie maternity begins with understanding that French Bulldogs can, in fact, give birth naturally despite their physical structure. Before undertaking this task, you should be aware of the risks associated with natural French Bulldog births, such as the potential for complications. To help ensure a successful natural birth, it is important to prepare with the right breeding practices, as well as to be aware of the signs of labor and when to seek help. With this knowledge and the right guidance, you can look forward to the miracle of French Bulldog maternity. What is a French Bulldog? A French Bulldog is a small, compact breed of dog with distinctive bat-like ears and a wrinkly face. They have a stocky body and a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors. French Bulldogs are friendly, playful, and intelligent and make excellent family pets. They require minimal exercise and grooming and they are quite adaptable to living in an apartment or house. If you are considering getting a French Bulldog, it is important to be aware that they can have difficulty giving birth naturally. This is due to their short and wide heads, which can make for a difficult delivery for both the mother and the puppies. With proper preparation, French Bulldogs can give birth naturally and the whole process can be a miraculous experience. It is essential to seek out a veterinarian who is experienced in naturally delivering French Bulldogs in order to ensure a successful and safe delivery. French Bulldogs can have difficulties with natural births because of their unique body shape and the size of their litters. The narrow pelvis of a French Bulldog makes it hard for them to give birth naturally, as the puppies may be too big to pass through the birth canal. French Bulldogs tend to have larger litters, which can put a strain on the mother as she is trying to give birth. The larger the litter, the greater the chances of a natural birth being complicated. French Bulldog breeders should consider reducing litter sizes to decrease the risk of complications. Make sure your dog is healthy before breeding and that they are receiving regular veterinary check-ups. Make sure to monitor the mother throughout the pregnancy and be prepared to provide assistance during delivery if needed. By following these steps, you can help ensure a successful natural birth. But with the right preparation, owners can help make the process a lot smoother for both mom and pup. This can help reduce the chances of complications during labor. French Bulldogs can give birth to puppies naturally, although it can be a challenging process for the mother due to their physical structure. The first step is to ensure that the mother Frenchie is healthy and receiving proper nutrition leading up to the birth. You should also make sure to research the best breeding practices for French Bulldogs to increase the chances of a successful birth. If the mother is having difficulty, you may need to provide assistance to ensure a safe and successful natural birth. As long as the mother is healthy and receives proper care leading up to the birth, French Bulldogs can give birth naturally. With the right preparation and understanding of the process, the miracle of Frenchie maternity can be a beautiful, safe experience for the mother and puppies. While natural childbirth can be an empowering experience for both mother and pups, it comes with possible complications. First and foremost, the mother must be in good health, both physically and mentally. Before breeding and during pregnancy, the mother should be monitored closely to ensure she is healthy and capable of giving birth naturally. Natural birth can become difficult or even impossible if the pups are too big to pass easily through the birth canal. Another thing to consider when preparing for a natural French Bulldog birth is the environment. Make sure that both the mother and pups are in a warm, safe place with minimal distractions when giving birth. A quiet, secure den should be prepared for the mother and pups prior to giving birth. The bedding should be soft and comfortable for the mother to rest between contractions, and it should be easy to clean after the birth. The mother should be given as much time as necessary to give birth. She should not be rushed or forced into labor. If the birth is taking longer than expected, the mother should be monitored closely to ensure that she and the pups are safe. If any potential risks are identified, a veterinarian should be consulted to provide medical advice. Find Out Now! To ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible, stay informed on the potential risks and ensure that the breeder practices high standards of health and care. The Frenchie should also be examined by a vet to ensure that they are in good health and can handle the birthing process. It is also important to be aware that French Bulldogs can be prone to difficult births, so be prepared to assist in the birth if necessary and be prepared to act quickly. Possible Breeding Practices When considering a French Bulldog breeding, it is important to speak with a veterinarian and carefully consider the risks and complications that can arise with natural birth. There are certain practices you can follow to give your dog the best chance of a successful natural birth. It is important to carefully select the right male and female French Bulldogs for the breeding, looking for healthy animals with good genetics. Proper nutrition and health care throughout the pregnancy will help prepare your Frenchie for birth. It is also worth discussing the possibility of a Cesarean section with your vet if the birth appears to be difficult. Before a natural birth is attempted, make sure that the mother is in good physical health. Ensure that the mother is up to date on all of her vaccinations and has received a clean bill of health from the vet. It is also important to ensure that she is at an acceptable weight and does not have any serious health problems. It is also important to consider the number of puppies in the litter. A French Bulldog should not have more than four puppies in a litter. Having too many puppies can be dangerous for the mother and may even result in death, so it is important to make sure that the number of puppies is manageable. It is important to provide your Frenchie with a comfortable environment during labor. This should include a temperature-controlled area with plenty of bedding and a good diet throughout her pregnancy. Natural Frenchie Birth Process French Bulldogs can give birth naturally, although it is a miracle of nature due to their physical structure. Make sure you are well prepared for the natural Frenchie birth process in order to reduce any risks for your dog. It is important to ask your vet for advice and to be aware of the signs of labor. You should consider possible breeding practices which may improve the chances of a successful natural birth. This includes having a female Frenchie puppy that is well conditioned, with the right weight and nutrition, and has a fully developed pelvis. It is essential to get health checks for both the mom and pup, as well as to ensure that both have the necessary vaccinations. During labor, you should be present to help the mother Frenchie and make sure everything is going smoothly. It is best to have a vet present in case there are any complications. Her temperature may drop, her nesting behaviours will increase, she might appear anxious or restless, and she will start producing a mucous plug. She may have more frequent trips to the litter box and appear uncomfortable in her abdomen. These are all clear signs that labor is coming soon. It is important to be prepared for labor, particularly if you are planning on assisting in the delivery. Make sure to have your vet on speed dial, or be prepared to take your Frenchie to the vet, depending on how her labor progresses. You should also ensure that the area your Frenchie will delivery in is comfortable, warm and clean. Have a few towels and a heating pad nearby to help with the process. Be sure to have a list of emergency contacts in case of any complications. Make sure you have experienced personnel with you to assist your Frenchie, such as a veterinarian or experienced breeder. They can help you spot labor signs and provide assistance to help ensure the wellbeing of both the mother and the puppies. This can help the vet determine if a C-section will be necessary and can also help them identify any potential issues that could arise during the delivery. These items can be used to keep the puppies warm and clean during the birthing process. A good supply of food and water is recommended to keep the mother comfortable and healthy. Following these tips can ensure that your Frenchie has a safe and successful natural birth. Conclusion When it comes to giving birth naturally, French Bulldogs can pull off a miracle. These cute and cuddly creatures can have their own set of problems and risks associated with their birthing process. You should also consider obtaining assistance from a veterinarian or experienced breeder if you are unsure about the birthing process. With the proper preparation and support, a natural French Bulldog birth can be a safe and successful experience for both pup and owner. A healthy litter of Frenchies who are starting to feed from their mother a few weeks after labor. Do I recommend your French Bulldog giving birth naturally? I am not a breeder and I am not a vet. According to the Royal Veterinary College view website Frenchies are almost 16 times likely to have a difficult pregnancy and natural birth than other dogs. As a result, French Bulldogs are 2. Many of these will have to be emergency operations when an owner opted for a natural French Bulldog birth. Having spoken with our local vet, he said the majority of dogs will give birth from the point the puppies start to deliver between 20 minutes and a couple of hours. In the video of a French Bulldog birth I show on this page, the entire delivery took around 10 minutes. However, I would imagine this is quite a rare scenario given how difficult French Bulldog labor can be. Do I recommend you proceed with a natural birth? No, but then I am not a breeder myself, but can only go on the guidelines I have seen published by professional vets. French Bulldog pregnancy test: what are the options? French Bulldog pregnancy test is an important aspect of breeding these adorable little pooches. There are different methods available to determine whether your French Bulldog is pregnant or not. Some of these options include: Ultrasound Ultrasound technology uses sound waves to create images of the developing puppies inside the mother's womb. This non-invasive procedure can be done as early as 28 days after mating and provides accurate results. During the ultrasound, the veterinarian will examine the uterus for the presence of gestational sacs, which indicates the pregnancy. They will also be able to count the number of puppies and assess their overall health. Relaxin Hormone Test A relaxin hormone test is designed to detect the presence of the hormone relaxin, which is only produced in pregnant female dogs. By analysing a blood or urine sample, a veterinarian can determine if your French Bulldog is indeed pregnant. The relaxin hormone test is highly accurate and can provide reliable results as early as three weeks after conception. X-Ray Scan An X-ray scan can detect any foetal skeletons in the mother's uterus, providing a clear indication of pregnancy. The radiography method is the most renowned choice. It's a reliable and straightforward way to find out the good news and even provides an accurate count of how many little ones your pet is carrying. Palpation Palpation is a process in which a veterinarian uses their hands to feel for the presence of developing puppies in the mother's uterus. This method is usually done around day after mating, and it is important to have it done by a professional to avoid causing harm to the mother or her puppies. During the procedure, the vet will gently press on the mother's abdomen and feel for the presence of small lumps or bumps, which are the developing puppies. Signs of pregnancy in French Bulldogs It can be challenging to detect pregnancy in French Bulldogs during the early stages. So make the appointment with your local vet as soon as possible. The price of the ultra sound and X-ray really depends from city to city. Right after you confirmed your French Bulldog is pregnant, switch her to a high quality puppy food. Puppy food contains more nutrients than the adult food, which are crucial for the development of the babies. Deworm your dam, so you prevent her from infecting the puppies at birth. Let your vet recommend a product that is safe for a pregnant dog. By the 6th week introduce smaller portions 3,4, maybe even 5 times per day. Her babies are growing and the amount of space in her belly is getting smaller by the day. This is also the time to get the whelping pen ready, and make sure she is used to it and feels comfortable in it, since she will spend a substantial amount of time there in the next few weeks. The amount of food should be gradually increasing until she whelps. The Labor After the 50th day you should start consistently measuring her rectal temperature. Every day, same time, keep notes. Other behavioral patterns will also give it away, like restlessness, nesting, panting, lack of appetite. Whelping Kit: Whelping box, located in a quiet part of the house. You can buy one online or build one yourself. A heating lamp or heating pad. They need to be kept warm at all times, but also need a space to crawl to if they get too warm. Digital thermometer. Make sure the room temperature or the whelping area temperature is above 80 degrees at all times. Hand sanitizer. And also to intervene with opening up the sacks if she is not doing it fast enough. You can warm them up in the drier and use them to dry up and warm up the puppy before placing them under the heating lamp. Suction bulb, you can order this one or get one from Walmart. This is very important. You will use it to suck any fluids out of the puppies lungs and nose. Puppy feeding bottles. Puppy feeding formula. We recommend using the GNC Goat milk one. A scale. You will be measuring their weight from birth on, every day, no excuses. You have to make sure all the puppies are gaining. Lots of blankets. You will be switching blankets several times per day. You have to keep the whelping box clean at all times. Baby wipes. There will be a lot of mess. Use gentle baby wipes to clean the pups up. Week 1 Weight the puppies and take their temperature daily. Feed them every 2 hours. It would be helpful if you have someone to assist you, or you will end up being a walking zombie. Puppies need to be fed every 2 hours for the first 10 days of their life. Make sure they are all pooping and peeing. If she refuses to do it, you will have to jump in. The pressure from the bloat can damage their internal organs. Take a syringe with 5ml of luke warm distilled water and slowly squirt it up their anus. Wait 30 seconds and start massaging with a warm cloth until they poop. Follow the instruction on the puppy formula. If you see milk coming out of their nose, use the sucking bulb to remove it. Around day 5 puppies front legs will be strong enough to start crawling towards their mothers teats. They can recognize and take a preference for a certain teat by the smell. You can start supplementing her with Raw Goat milk , to increase calcium intake after birth. Week 2 Puppies should be gaining weight daily. They are regulating their own temperature and also slowly opening their eyes and ears. They will be reacting to sounds and will start recognizing their mom, siblings and yourself. Start trimming puppy nails. I just use human trimmers at that point, since the nails are soft and tiny. I swear puppy nails are murder weapons. You may not be aware but almost all puppies are born with some kind of worms, usually transmitted from their mother. Repeat the process every week until 12 weeks of age. Week 3 At week 3 your French Bulldog puppies will start taking their first steps. They will now be able to use their hearing and vision for exploration. Make sure to remove any unwanted objects they could ingest or nibble on. The nursing process is going to become more and more uncomfortable for the mother and that is where the next big step comes in. Time to introduce the pups to food and water. Offer it several times per day. If your litter is big use a baking sheet and place the mush on it to make it easily accessible to all of them. They will still nurse, as much as the mother lets them. Week Puppies are actively exploring their surroundings and interacting with their siblings. Their senses are now fully developed. Interaction with their mother is still essential during this period; through play, she will start to guide them in how to behave appropriately. In short, the dam will communicate with them and teach them. You can introduce different types of stimulatio , from toys, to TV sounds, kids, unusual sounds, people picking them up and playing with them, etc. If socialization is poorly accomplished, this could create fear and inappropriate behavioral responses later in life. Week 6 In contrast to their earlier readiness to explore, around week puppies will begin to withdraw, appearing more reserved when faced with new and unfamiliar experiences. Puppies should continue to be offered as many stimulating socialization opportunities as possible, yet everything new must now be introduced with greater care. Failure to do so could make the puppies frightened, which is highly undesirable. If your child is handling puppies make sure they are informed and as gentle as possible, not just physically but also vocally. Week The mother now pays less attention to her young, allowing them to suckle less and less. This development in maternal behavior is quite normal. Nevertheless, the dam will continue in her role of teacher, deciding when and where to intervene and stop play. Week 8 is also the time to take a trip to the vets office for their overall vet check to make sure they are growing, healthy and parasite free. Puppies will receive their first set of vaccines. Your vet will be able to advise on the vaccination schedule to follow. Sometimes they need plenty of stimulation to get them going. Start by using the sucking bulb to make sure no liquid is preventing them from taking a breath. Cover their mouth and nose with your mouth and start performing CPR on the pup. Try pinching the puppy several times to get a response out of him. Do that for an hour. Our Experience, passion, and dedication for our french bulldog puppies speaks for itself. They are known for their friendly personality and playful nature. However, breeding a French bulldog can be difficult. There are many different methods you can use to try and get a French bulldog pregnant. If you get your Frenchie pregnant the next step is how your pup will give birth. There are many complications related to this process. Here in this blog, we will discuss in detail can French bulldog give birth naturally and what are the complications related to it. A French bulldog can give birth by a natural process, but it is very rare to see one do so. There are many issues and complications related to their birth process. The most common complication is prolapse. Cesarean section is a common surgical procedure opted for these dogs. It is considered to be the best option for French bulldog owners who have a complicated delivery or who are pregnant for the first time. Cesarean section is safe and effective, and it can provide your dog with the best possible health. French bulldogs are known for their impressive looks and strong personality. But there is another reason why these dogs are called man-made dogs. These dogs were bred specifically for humans and they cannot continue their life without human preference. The reason behind this is because of their body structure and their sensitive nature. French bulldogs are also sensitive during their pregnancy because they are bred to be working dogs. They are known for being very protective of their puppies, and during their early stages of development, they are especially vulnerable to physical and emotional stress. This can lead to problems for the dog during their pregnancy, including contractions that are difficult to control, difficulty breathing, and even premature delivery. Frenchie puppies are born through a very narrow birth canal. This can lead to complications such as long and painful labor. While some Frenchie puppies do well during delivery, others may get stuck and require help from a vet. What Are the Signs of French bulldog getting into Labor? When a dog is giving birth, there are many things you should know about it. This includes understanding the process of childbirth, knowing what to do if your dog is having difficulties, and being prepared for any possible problems. French bulldogs are notorious for giving birth with difficulty, but this behavior is not always indicative of labor. Some common signs that a French bulldog is in labor include changes in breathing patterns and a heightened sense of urgency. If you notice any of these behaviors, take your dog to the vet as soon as possible! Different complications occur during the natural process and you must know about them. Here are some common problems that you should be prepared for Anasarca Anasarca is a term used in French bulldogs to describe the swelling in the body just before giving birth. When a French bulldog is with puppies his body is big in terms of proportion and swelling makes it even bigger. When puppies are about to be born, they are filled with air and fluid. Swelling can form in these fluids and air. Some of the problems that can occur during birth with swelling include an increase in heart rate, breathing, and tiredness. This makes it difficult for the dog to eat and drink. Dystocia Dystocia is a condition in French bulldogs that can occur during delivery. It is a medical emergency that often results in the dog being born prematurely or with major defects. Dystocia can be caused by problems such as contractions too strong to be allowed to pass through the birth canal, prior pregnancy, or puppies whose physique is too much weight for the mother to carry. When puppies get stuck they usually require external effort from a vet. French bulldogs can give birth naturally and a c-section is not necessary. However natural birth is very dangerous for them and often leads to the death of moms and puppies. C section has many advantages and keeps both pups and mom healthy. C-section readiness is a vital step in the life of any dog. If your pup has not gone through a c-section before, it is important to have them checked out by a veterinarian. When a French bulldog goes through a c-section she needs a lot of time to recover. A Frenchie can go through a maximum of two to three c-sections in her life. If you want to keep the mom Frenchie in good health it would be best to pass one cycle and gives time to mom to recover. If your French bulldog recovers well from this process she will behave well in the next pregnancy. It will be really helpful if you give your Frenchie a nice comfy bed like house for Frenchie to take rest. A Frenchie can give birth to a maximum of 4 puppies in a litter. The number of puppies also affects the size of all puppies. If the size of a few puppies is large it will affect the development of other puppies. Conclusion There is not enough scientific evidence to support the claims that French bulldogs can give birth naturally, but there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that this may be possible. If you are thinking of getting a French bulldog pregnant, please do your research before that. A vet can give you the best advice for your pup. All things considered, French Bulldogs do often have trouble giving birth naturally. Purebred French Bulldogs are very specific and carefully bred, making them — essentially — a manmade dog breed. This is not a dog breed that ever could have existed without human interference. A fairly sensitive breed, French Bulldogs are commonly thought to have a lot of difficulties throughout pregnancy as well as in delivering puppies. Due to the physical anatomy, French Bulldogs have a narrow birth canal. This means that delivering puppies through this birth canal is very challenging, to begin with. The labor process for French Bulldogs is often long and, well, laborious. If your Frenchie does have a natural labor, you can settle in for a long day. Signs of labor to watch for include a decrease in temperature as well as obvious discomfort. This includes scratching or digging her nest and panting and general restlessness as her body readies itself to deliver. Possible complications giving birth naturally There are quite a few possible complications to know about when it comes to your French Bulldog doing so naturally. These are listed below for you to know and prepare for. Anasarca swelling require c-section This is especially common in Frenchies, which are small dogs in terms of their body proportions with a belly full of puppies! This is when there is a serious and severe swelling directly before giving birth. This can cause all sorts of complications with breathing and heart rate and also can be fatal to both mom and puppies. The puppy gets stuck Even just the sound of that is terrifying! But, a puppy getting stuck in a narrow birth canal is actually very common with French Bulldogs. This is happening if you not that she has been actively pushing for minutes with no obvious signs of delivery. Dystocia Similarly to getting stuck, this means that the puppy requires external support to help it gain access to the living world. This is typically a vet or someone experienced in births to help guide the puppy into the world safely. You should have a vet on-call or, even better, on-site to make sure everything goes smoothly. Do Frenchies have to have C sections? They are physically capable of giving birth naturally. That being said, natural birth is often dangerous and potentially fatal to both mom and pups. When it comes to French Bulldogs giving birth, a c-section has many advantages. Even if you get an ultrasound that says she has only 1 puppy, you may actually find out that you have 2 puppies. You guessed it. She effectively aborts her last puppy and this can lead to her much later passing a stillborn puppy at best, and dealing with a nasty and heartbreaking infection at worst. If you are planning on having her deliver later litters of puppies, you may find that giving birth to a litter naturally prevents her from becoming safely pregnant or having a healthy pregnancy later. Less stress on Mom Again, labor is very challenging on her body. If she pushes out 2 or 3 puppies, she is well past exhausted and can be severely weakened for a long time after delivering her puppies. This means that you will need to care for her puppies and deal with a potentially sick and struggling mama, too! Mom is anesthetized The first thing after she is prepped for surgery shaved around her tummy is to put her under anaesthesia. Her uterus is cut open and the vet removes the puppies A vet makes an incision in her uterus and beings to remove the puppies in their gestational sacs, leaving them intact if at all possible just like they would be in case of natural birth. The puppies are cleaned and stimulated Vet assistants will remove the gestational sacs and clean the puppies off. They then have to imitate a momma by carefully stimulating a puppy. This stimulation is required to get them to breathe and officially join the world of the living! The goal of a c-section, particularly with a potentially at-risk Frenchie more on that later , is to keep it as short as possible to minimize the time that she needs to be under the anaesthesia. Possible complications in a c-section Just like giving birth naturally, a cesarean section can also have its own complications that you should be aware of. While they are, of course, much less than natural birth and they are watched over by an experienced vet and their supplies, they are something to be aware of. Lack of oxygen As you may already know, French Bulldogs are brachycephalic. This flat face can lead them to breathing issues and this is no better exemplified than in a surgery where she is put under anaesthesia. Since oxygen is crucial for making sure that she can breathe while under she is no longer able to voluntarily do so , it can be challenging for even experienced vets to make sure she is getting enough oxygen. Choking on vomit Vomit is a common problem when a dog is under anaesthesia and with a dog who has breathing issues, this can be especially dangerous. They will often suffocate on their vomit much faster than an average dog, so stepping in and clearing it completely, immediately, is crucial. Conclusion There is a lot to know about French Bulldogs and giving birth. Whether you opt for a natural birth or for the safer c-section, this will help guide you in making the right choice for your Frenchie and her short- and long-term health.

Monty probably aint going nowhere.Thought for minute he might be wolf hybrid. Monty has been with me for 5 years. Night one: I was getting my drank on with a friend. Walked out for a smoke at 2am and BOOM. There's this gigantic dumb dog standing at the door in the pouring rain. Do you think anyone came to claim him? Hell no. Not sure I can say I blame them tbh. Im just trying to be honest with you guys. He either hates you or loves you. We've had one failed attempt after another with meet and greets. Monty doesn't want to be forced to like someone. He wants to do it on his own terms. We've had volunteers that haven't had a single issue with him at all and we've had volunteers who can't take him out of his kennel. Monty loves me, my 7 year old son, my ex husband, my new future husband, and a handful of other people. He responds beautifully with someone who won't bow down to him. You won't find more love, character and devotion than Monty will give you. He has ZERO ill intent towards people whom have been blessed enough to be considered part of his pack. Monty will not be suited for a home with children or one that will have random people walking in and out. Monty would be best suited for a person or couple who both are confident with dogs and don't display anxiety around them- Monty feeds into anxiety. It's like he has to prove a point that he's the boss. He would do great with adopters who are active and like to hike, walk, run or do just about anything. He can often be found at Kankakee State park, Menards and Lowes, because for some reason hell act civilized for fun trips has to be muzzled but he doesn't mind. Monty is not for the weak minded or feeble. Monty isn't a bad dog, he doesn't want to kill anyone. He's just a little twisted and likes to see people squirm. He needs a handler who will say "knock it off" and not let him see them sweat. One who can commit to keeping him in line and safely controlled. FYI he can and will absolutely jump a 4' fence. Doesn't even attempt with 6'. Much as that is to take in, Im sure you've left by now. If not, and you think this level of crazy is just right for you then please give me a call so we can discuss your next biggest mistake! Considering Monty for adoption? Serious applicants only. Also known as the Bull Pug, this medium-sized dog has a stocky and muscular build that is brought about by crossbreeding. Oftentimes, it is referred to as a miniature Bulldog because it is the spitting image of its parent. Note that this is just a nickname. This Pug Bulldog mix is the offspring of two popular dog breeds. You may be familiar with the English Bulldog and Pug because they are unique in terms of their physical appearance. English Bulldog History You probably know the English Bulldog as it is quite remarkable because of its wrinkled face. This medium-sized Mastiff-type dog traces its roots back to England, as its name suggests. Originally bred for bull-baiting in the s, the naturally nice English Bulldog was forced to be aggressive to fit this extreme sport. In bull-baiting, a dog is pitted against a bull inside a ring. After the ban of this sport in , breeders changed their attitude towards this breed and started to care for English Bulldogs so they may be good canine companions. Fast forward to the present, the English Bulldog is now known as a sweet and dependable dog great for families and children. Gone is its former aggressive reputation. Pug History The Pug is just as remarkable as the English Bulldog because of its similarly wrinkled face and sociable and charming temperament. Known as the pampered pets of Chinese rulers, the Pug breed was brought to Europe in the sixteenth century. This breed was equally treasured by nobles throughout the Western continent. It was popularly bred with one goal: to be a companion dog. To date, it is still a popular companion dog as it was centuries before. One thing is for sure, though. Putting together its two parent breeds was intentional, thus making it a designer breed. The English Bulldog and Pug were so popular that breeders wanted to have the characteristics of both breeds in one canine. The result of this crossbreeding is a playful companion dog with a wrinkled face which is known as the Pug English Bulldog mix. Some breeders and dog owners also wanted to have an English Bulldog that is smaller in size. One way for breeders to develop smaller versions of purebred dogs is to mix them with a smaller breed. Other examples of this crossbreeding practice are the miniature Rottweiler and the miniature Collie. Many names have been given to this hybrid like the mini Bulldog and Bull Pug and they are recognized by canine organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and Designer Breed Registry. As I mentioned earlier, the English Bulldog Pug mix is sometimes called a mini Bulldog and one look at this pup will tell you why. Most Bull Pugs come with a round head, broad shoulders, and a muscular and stocky body like that of their parents. In terms of its face, it has the signature wrinkles of both parents, a medium muzzle, and eyes that are black and shaped like almonds. It falls under the brachycephalic breed group which means that because of its skull, it will have a flat face and squished nose. This mix may even come with an underbite! The English Bulldog is medium-sized, typically 14 to 15 inches in height, while the Pug is around 10 to 13 inches. Putting these two together will give an offspring smaller than a regular Bulldog but bigger than a Pug. Your English Bulldog Pug mix may grow as tall as 10 to 14 inches and as heavy as 20 to 45 pounds. It does not need much space to move around. For as long as you take it on walks, it is good to go. These are coat color traits they inherit from their parents. A litter of five to seven can have a mix of these coat types. Fawn is light tannish yellow that may manifest in a wide range of shades. Dogs with this coat color may have a light shade like pale tan, dark shade like deep deer-red, or other shades in between. There are crossbreeds with fawn coats that have black areas around their muzzles like that of Pugs. There are also Pug English Bulldog mixes that have black coats. Mixed dogs with black coats typically have a solid black color throughout the body. The usual patches of piebald Bull Pugs are white with a red or fawn backdrop. There are dog owners who use the term piebald to refer to two-toned or bi-colored coats. The crossbreed that inherits this coat from the English Bulldog parent has a colored base with a striped pattern that resembles tiger stripes. Usually, brindle coats come in color groups like black and fawn, white and red, and other combinations. Both parent breeds of the English Bulldog Pug mix are great for families, making their crossbreed offspring a perfect family dog. Playful, affectionate, and sweet best describe the English Bulldog Pug mix as it enjoys being in the company of its loved ones. If you are a dog owner of this crossbreed, expect to have a loyal companion who loves having you around. In fact, it can go on without getting any attention from you for a certain period of time. If you have a laidback and sedentary lifestyle, this pup is for you because it does not move around so much. While it can get playful and energetic especially during playtime, this dog also enjoys chilling on the couch with its fur parents. Take a look at this video of a Bull Pug playing calmly with a bug: English Bull Dog Pug mix playing with Bug When it comes to children, this mix is also a good choice. Its English Bulldog parent has a reputation for being aggressive. However, this is just a misconception due to its bull-baiting history. The truth is that the English Bulldog is sweet-natured and gets along with kids. The Pug breed is also sociable which makes their mixed pup good with the little ones. Aside from kids, the English Bulldog Pug mix also enjoys mingling with other dogs. To ensure that your dog will be as friendly, start introducing other people and dogs even at a young age. Early socialization can help them turn into nice-mannered dogs. This pup may need a little bit of time for adjustment, though, when meeting strangers. Its parent breeds handle stranger dogs and humans differently. The English Bulldog may be wary of strangers and exercises caution when being approached. Quite the contrary, the Pug is friendly, sometimes to an extreme level. How your pup will react will depend on its training and the inherited temperament. Your crossbreed pup may get more temperament traits from either of its parents, but rest assured, you will get a pleasant-tempered pup that is a perfect addition to your family. To give you a peek of what an English Bulldog Pug mix is like, here is a video compilation done by a fur parent. English Bulldog Pug Mix Lifespan and Health Issues As fur parents, we all want our beloved pooches to live healthy lives and spend more years with us so we should be well-aware of the health risks that come with their breed. Several health issues concern the English Bulldog and Pug which their crossbred offspring might inherit. Most conditions are related to the respiratory system, bones and joints, and skin. The result is a pain in the limbs which may cause your dog to start limping. Patellar Luxation: Another orthopedic issue, patellar luxation concerns the patella or kneecap. Dogs with patellar luxation experience discomfort in their knees and in some cases, loss of function. This is because during knee-flexing, the patella rides outside the femoral groove. Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome: The Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome is a common health problem in brachycephalic or short-nosed dogs. Both parents of this mix have this flattened skull so they are prone to this. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, vomiting, and loud snoring. Pug Dog Encephalitis: The neurological disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis happens when brain tissues are inflamed causing pups to experience seizures, behavioral changes, disorientation, and more. This usually hits Pugs that are two to three years of age but may also occur as early as six months or as late as seven years old. No known cause has been found for this kind of encephalitis. Cherry Eye: Dogs have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane. Diabetes: Diabetes is a common problem in dogs, but there are more incidents in Pugs. Because diabetic dogs are unable to regulate sugars in their bodies, they need insulin shots to help them do so. Canine Atopy: Getting allergies is common to Pugs and in some cases, they have a hypersensitivity reaction when exposed to allergens called canine atopy. Affected areas are usually the paws, abdomen, face, ears, chest, armpits, and flanks. Basic needs for canines are food, shelter, grooming, and training. However, these needs vary from one breed to another. What the Chihuahua needs may not exactly be the same as what your English Bulldog Pug mix needs. Knowing what your pup needs allows you to give it the best care possible. Feeding and Diet To ensure that you have a healthy pup, only give good quality dry dog food to your Pug Bulldog mix. On a daily basis, this crossbreed needs about calories to be served in two split meals. You may also consider giving homemade food. Cooked vegetables like spinach, carrots, asparagus, and sweet potatoes are good for your crossbreed dog. You may also give fruits like bananas, apples, and mangoes. Always remember to remove pits and seeds before serving. Besides giving your English Bulldog Pug mix the right kind of food, you should also monitor its food intake. Both parents are prone to obesity. While a chubby pup looks very cute, it is not healthy and may lead to many problems and complications. If you are starting to notice that your pup is getting underweight or overweight, consult your vet to get a diet recommendation. Cleaning and Grooming Short coats can be seen in both the English Bulldog and Pug and the same for their crossbreed pup. Use a soft brush to keep the coat beautiful and healthy and to avoid hurting your dog. Aside from its coat, you should also pay attention to the wrinkles on its face and body. Bacteria may start to build up when left unclean so be sure to wipe and bathe when necessary. This is also to avoid infections and allergies which they may be prone to. On top of that, regularly trim the nails and clean the eyes and ears. Brushing is also important and should be added to your grooming routine. Doing all these will help prevent infections and keep your dog healthy and happy. Training and Exercise English Bulldog Pug mixes are laidback and chill. If you do not enjoy too much physical activity, this crossbreed is for you because its exercise needs are not too high. A minute walk is already enough for this mixed breed plus enough playtime and bonding. Early morning and evening are said to be the best time for walks and exercise. Remember that both parent breeds are brachycephalic which means their offspring will be too. They cannot handle heat well and are prone to overheating. When walking, ensure that you have drinking water ready. In terms of trainability, this mix can learn tricks and commands. However, you need to have patience during training as it can get a little too stubborn. This is probably a trait inherited from its parents. Be firm when you train your pup but also not too strict. Have fun and consider training as bonding time. Do you know that the secret to successful training is positive reinforcement? Dogs listen and obey more when they are rewarded for good behavior. Prepare those treats for your training time! There may also be more expensive ones especially when you buy from a reputable breeder. Factors that may affect cost include size, health, breeder reputation, and lineage. There are also mixes from champion bloodlines but prepare to shell more. When choosing a breeder to buy a mixed pup from, consider a lot of things such as the affiliation of your breeder. Puppy mills are everywhere and they have poor practices and little care for their dogs, thus, low prices. Avoid them as much as possible. Caring for a pup entails other expenses aside from the cost of the dog itself. Prepare for one-time costs such as a leash, harness or collar, bed, toys, and the like. You also have regular expenses such as food, treats, and grooming items. For new pups, you have to spend for neutering or spaying, vaccinations, and deworming. However, they are also not highly common so you have to check the availability of this crossbreed: Greenfield Puppies — Fur parents have been trusting Greenfield Puppies since .They connect reputable breeders with interested soon-to-be owners and carry both purebred and mixed puppies. Adoption is also another option for those looking for an English Bulldog Pug mix. There are mixed breeds, puppies and full-grown dogs alike, that need a home. They have been saving Pugs and Pug mixes and helping them find a family that will give them the love they deserve. This group also provides education and guidance to adoptive families. Adoptable breeds include Pugs, English Bulldogs, Frenchies, and their mixes. Petfinder — With their vast database of dogs and cats, Petfinder can link you with animal shelters and adoption organizations so you can find your furry companion. Before buying or adopting a Bull Pug, you must know what you are getting into. Caring for a dog is hard work but more than that, it requires love and attention. Check out these dogs that you may want to consider. Frug: The name may sound funny but the Frug is an actual crossbreed. Both crossbreeds share some physical characteristics and low exercise requirements. Puggle: A mix of the Pug and Beagle, the Puggle is a smart crossbreed that likes playing. It is also good for families because it gets along well with kids. Unlike the Bull Pug, the Puggle does not enjoy staying put and is highly active and energetic. Poxer: The Poxer is the offspring of a Pug and a Boxer. This medium-sized designed breed is charming and lively. Fit for those with active lifestyles, this crossbreed loves physical activities. Both parent breeds of this mix are brachycephalic which also makes this dog one. There are some costs that might be covered by some pet insurance policies , and the costs will vary based on the dog and the services you choose. You can save money upfront by adopting or rescuing as well, although many rescue dogs do come with some medical costs attached. Fitting a Bulldog Mix Into the Family Dynamic Bulldog pug dog mixes are great family dogs, especially if you have small children. They are also great dogs for elderly folks as they do not require a lot of exercises. Bull pugs are really gentle and fun with small kids, but once the kids grow up, they will not be able to go on all of the adventures that kids want to go on, so keep that in mind. Bull pugs are great if you live in an apartment. You will have to have your bull pug be a mostly indoor dog as they do not do well in the heat for extended periods of time. However, due to their small size even smaller than a bulldog , bull pugs are the perfect breed of dog to have as an indoor dog. Bull pugs are not hypoallergenic, so if you or anyone in your family has any pet or dog allergies, I would steer clear of the bull pugs. Bull pugs are fairly good with being left alone for a day. Bull pugs can be obstinate when training, and, like bulldogs, they are a stubborn breed. However, if you keep consistent, short, reward-based training sessions, then you will have a trained bull pug in no time. Health Concerns for Both Bulldogs and Pugs and What that Means for Bull Pugs The biggest commonality bulldogs and pugs share in the health issues department is their potential for obesity. Both Bulldogs and pugs have great appetites I can relate and if you feed them too much, they will get fat. Bulldogs have a short, broad skull, and that leads to them having shortened nasal passages. Pugs also have breathing issues, so watch out for your bull pug. In addition, bulldogs are vulnerable to cancer and pugs are prone to eye issues. Mixed breed puppies may inherit some or all of these health problems. However, mixed dog breeds are usually healthier than purebreds and develop fewer problems. The History of Bulldogs and Pugs Bulldogs were originally bred in England for the purpose of helping to herd horses and cattle on farmland. After bull baiting was made illegal, bulldogs turned into a designer breed and got shorter and stockier. The former being short and stocky and the latter looking more like the original bulldog. Pugs came from China and they were dogs preferred by the royals. Pugs were often given as gifts to royals or as gifts from returning soldiers to their families. They almost went extinct until Queen Victoria kept a few and made them popular again celebrity culture has been around for a while. The popularity of pugs skyrocketed after this. Both breeds are designer breeds, so it made sense to breed the two together for the ultimate, low maintenance, family, designer dog breed. Related Questions Are bulldogs good family dogs? Bulldogs are laid back and gentle, so they are great dogs to have around young children. They do not require a lot of exercises and cannot go on grand excursions, but they are loved as family dogs. They are known to do very well with small children and in small apartments or houses with small yards. Are pugs good family dogs? Pugs were never meant to be anything besides companion dogs, so they are great dogs for elderly couples and young families. They are gentle and fun loving. However, they are not the healthiest breed of dog, so they do need an owner that is willing to take the time to take extra good care of them. Post Views: 1, A mixed-breed can inherit any combination of traits from their parents. Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Pug Mix. Featured Pug Mix Article. View fullsize The first labradoodle was developed in the 's in Australia as a means of providing allergy friendly coats on an intelligent service dog. With the name "labradoodle" being so popular, some breeders are crossing poodles with labrador retrievers and calling the resulting dogs "labradoodles. They might shed, they might trouble people with allergies, they might be a labrador or a poodle or almost anything in between. The goal of Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle breeders is to develop a consistent breed with predictable traits. By breeding only multi-generation Australian Labradoodles with a lineage that can be traced back to Australia, we are doing our part to perfect and standardize the Australian Labradoodle breed. Many people who are allergic to dogs can have an Australian Labradoodle. Not only are they intelligent, but they are also very funny. With their floppy ears, wide-set eyes and wavy or curly coats, they can look like muppets. When introducing them, we like to tell people that "yes, they are as silly as they look. While resting they can assume what we call the " attack position " where their bellies are exposed, legs splayed out and tongue hanging out of their head that's lying on the ground. Australian Labradoodles are in love with the dishwasher. Anytime we are loading it they will be waiting to inspect everything that goes in. We got Matilda in .One year later we decided that with all three children away at college we should get another Australian Labradoodle and start breeding them. In we bought one of Tilly's unaltered little sisters from Pine Lodge Labradoodles. Look at our Labradoodling blog and our Puppies pages to see lots and lots of pictures. There are more pictures on Instagram. Our house sits on eight acres in Western Washington between Seattle and Bellingham. We had horses several years ago, the mare lived to be 37, the gelding we had out of her, .Now the barn is just where we lock the cat up at night. We let the dogs run wild in a large fenced yard when the weather cooperates, take them for long walks when it doesn't and keep them in the house with us the rest of the time. When the children visit they are all over their poochies, taking them for walks, runs, hikes and bike rides. And road trips. Having had many animals over the years, someone probably grumpy, maybe dad declared that there would be no more animals in the house. We had a barn, a yard and even some woods. There was plenty of room outside for all the animals anyone could need without having one stink up the house. That all changed when we got our Australian Labradoodles. If we wait too long between baths they will eventually smell like grass, which is where they spend most of their time in the summer. Otherwise you can walk into our house and not know we have dogs unless you see them. Or hear them. When you come visit, they'll say hi. The puppies we sell are registered with the ALAA and WALA , come with a two year health guarantee and will be sent to their forever home with their shots up to date, a microchip, a veterinarian's checkup and a free month of insurance available from Trupanion. Our first Australian Labradoodle. View fullsize. Welcome to the home of Jajaca Australian Labradoodles. They are incredibly fun loving, loyal and intelligent with a brilliant temperament to match. These attributes make for the perfect family companion! I have owned dogs all my life, but ran into many dramas with allergies and health concerns with my then young family. After researching the Australian Labradoodle and what the breed represents, I realised that the Australian Labradoodle was everything I was looking for. Fast forward 15 years, my daughter Cassidy, my adopted sister Nicola and I feel nothing but gratitude to be able to provide our families with the quality Labradoodles I was searching for many years ago. I am so fortunate to have been given encouragement and total support from all members of the ALA, who share their knowledge and wisdom for the betterment of the breed. All these years later and I am still totally hooked, assisting to mentor new ALA Breeders, and finding I am more in love with this breed than I ever thought possible. After a while, their adult teeth will grow to replace the milk teeth. Adult pugs have 42 teeth in total. They will lose their baby teeth and grow new adult teeth. Some common teething symptoms include chewing on things, drooling, and irritability. Once they are around eight months old, pugs would get 42 adult teeth. Age 2 — 4 Weeks Pug puppies are born without teeth. The two-week time is crucial for their overall growth and development. During the first teething stage, dogs can smell, hear, and open their eyes. During the weeks, their teeth will start to develop. Pug puppies will get their first 12 incisors as soon as their teeth erupt. Age 4 — 8 Weeks Your puppy will get their 28 milk teeth. During this stage, the premolars and molars will appear behind the canines. From this stage, their biting inhibition starts. So, during this stage, a pug will learn to control its bite. It will help them get used to a routine of good oral hygiene. Also, with the appearance of sharp canines, a mother starts weaning off her pups from four weeks old. When a puppy reaches weeks of age, they stop taking its mother milk altogether. Age 8 — 16 Weeks At eight weeks, a pug puppy may start the process of losing its baby teeth. If not, it will be closer to the sixteen-week-old stage. Baby teeth fall out because the permanent teeth begin to push through the gums. Usually, the milk teeth will fall out on their own. The milk teeth may need to be extracted by a veterinarian. However, this is in rare cases only. Age 4 — 8 Months From four months of age of your pug puppy, they would have lost their first teeth set. The process starts when incisors replace the permanent incisors. During this time, your pug may begin to bite objects to try and get some relief. Like other dog breeds, pugs also develop 42 adult teeth. Once they are four months old, the baby molars get replaced with permanent molars. And once they are 6 -8 months old, pugs will have fully developed adult teeth. Puppies Baby Teeth That Have Fallen Out Teething Signs You Need to Know Pug puppies go through a teething phase like any other puppy, so if you notice them chewing things around your house, they are likely doing this because of teething issues to soothe the discomfort. The gums of your dog can also become extremely sensitive and even inflamed. Others include the below! Blood Spots: Pug pups chew toys to gain relief from teething. You may even find a baby tooth nearby. Excessive Chewing: Chewing is natural for any pug pups. During the teething process, chewing relieves the pain. Sore Gums: Red and inflamed gums are a sure sign of teething. Drooling: Puppies that have started teething will drool more. You will see more saliva on their toys, bed, face and floors. Whining: Puppies whine when they are taken to their new home. Whining is expected as they miss their mother and siblings. But if it starts whining a few weeks after settling, your pug puppy might be experiencing teething symptoms. Should You Worry Pet owners often understand how uncomfortable their puppy feels when it is teething. However, there is no need to worry if the puppy is healthy and doing usual activities, such as eating, drinking, exploring, playing, or socialising. It might be more painful if the puppy is unhappy and not doing any of these things. Take your puppy to the vets in this case. Recommended: Getting through loads of unhealthy training treats? Try the training treats that I use instead. Runt Of The Litter If you have a small or unhealthy puppy, you need to take care of it more than other puppies. Being the runt of a litter , the puppy might have problems with its teeth. It would help if you took it to the vet to check its teeth more often. Ways To Help A Teething Pug Puppy The best way to take care of a teething pug puppy is to offer a soft and flexible puppy teething toy. They can easily chew the toy to get comfort and aid the teeth in coming out. You can apply the gel on their gums or their chew toys. The gel would soothe down the inflamed gums and reduce the pain. Alternatively, you can offer treats, like carrots. Carrots are great for teething puppies. They are low in fat, keeping them occupied whilst getting some crunching relief. The teething stages of a pug pup generally last up to eight months. They get their first teeth when they are two weeks old. When they are months old, the milk teeth fall out entirely, making way for the 42 adult teeth. Once all adult teeth come out, teething stops. Teething Aggression Dogs are not born aggressive. Puppies do not have aggression inside of them by nature. They may act angry because they are testing boundaries, but this does not mean they are naturally aggressive animals. The main reason why you may think your pug puppy is so aggressive is: When puppies go through the teething stage, the potential behavioural actions look like aggression. Such as biting and chewing can show that your dog is irritated. Dogs might also growl if they are in pain. Not listening and being stubborn can also signify that your dog is unhappy. Why is my pug puppy so aggressive? The pain, frustration and the need to chew or bite can undoubtedly give off all the signals of aggression. Through playing, time out, or soft talking. Positive reinforcement gets much better results! For all the puppies I have had, telling them off at a young age always backfired on me. Until they reached a certain age, they had positive reinforcement only. Telling a puppy off when they are learning to behave and act is negative. Hence the positive reinforcement gets much better results. If you feel your patience is running low, have a time out. Acting like this for puppies is typical; ride it out and defuse it as much as possible! Enjoy being a proud pug owner. They are genuinely great companions! Please read the other article I wrote if you would like to know more about the puppy teething stages of my puppy and what I experienced. Read our privacy policy for more info. If your Pug is teething and chewing through everything, you may spot some blood drops on toys and teeth on the floor. Pug puppies go through teething twice by the time they are 1 year old. Puppies get their 28 temporary teeth when they are 2 to 4 weeks old. These fall out between 8 and 16 weeks, and adult teeth start coming out. Pugs stop teething when they are 6 to 8 months old, after getting their 42 adult teeth. However, that starts to change after the first two weeks. In total, Pug puppies usually have 28 baby teeth, also known as deciduous teeth, baby teeth, temporary teeth or milk teeth. Pup puppies will start to learn bite inhibition along with their siblings, under the supervision of their mother. Inhibited biting means the puppy developing and learning how to control the strength of his bite, also sometimes referred to as soft mouth. The roots resorb and the new adult teeth will push their way up through the gums. During this stage, you will find rice-sized teeth around your house as your pup starts to shed his temporary teeth. Also, you can find blood spots on his toys. This phase plays a big role in bite inhibition and decreasing mouthiness. By doing this, your Pug will assimilate your behaviour as normal. This will allow you to introduce your pup to a toothbrush and toothpaste next and finally start brushing his teeth. Molars around 4 months old. This process is painful for your pup, so be patient and check the 3 Tips to Stop Pug Chewing and Nipping section below for some tips! When your pug puppy is about six months old, all of his puppy teeth should have fallen out, and his adult teeth should have started growing. By 6 to 8 months old, Pugs stop teething after all of their adult teeth 42 in total are out. Pugs can teeth for 6 months, but they should stop by the time they are 8 months old. The good news is that your Pug has stopped teething. If 28 baby teeth can cause damage, imagine what 42 adult teeth can do! Continue reading for some tips on how to deal with chewing and nipping behaviours. Finally, if you see that your Pug puppy still has puppy teeth at this stage especially around the 8 months mark , check with your veterinarian. That does tend to be somewhat breed dependent. We see it more in small breeds of dogs and brachycephalic breeds. Your puppy will seek to soothe his discomfort by chewing. Here are the most common teething signs that you should be aware of: Fallen baby teeth: One of the most obvious signs that your puppy is teething is finding those little milk teeth on the floor. Blood spots: Little blood drops on toys is also a common sign. More drooling: Teething puppies will drool, so you can expect more saliva than usual. Lots of chewing: Chewing during teething is a way to relieve pain. So, your pup is likely to chew even more. This is when chew toys come in handy. The sooner you teach your Pug, the easier it is to guide your pup not to nip and bite during play and when excited. When he gets older and biting becomes harder, it becomes more difficult to stop it. Plus, it also combats boredom and can relieve mild anxiety or frustration. But for Pug puppies, chewing is a way to relieve pain caused by teething. Basically, they are made with tough but safe rubber that will keep your pup away from chewing anything else! He needs toys with softer rubber or plush toys. From 3 to 8 months: Your puppy will be teething, so avoid hard rubber. To help him cope with the pain and discomfort, have a good variety of chew toys that will keep him distracted from chewing everything else! After 9 months: Once the teething phase is over, your Pug will have a strong enough jaw for harder rubber toys, depending on him being an average or extreme chewer. Also, you can focus his endless energy by playing with balls or tug toys. Use my favourite dog toys guide for toys and game ideas to enjoy with your Pug! You can freeze a stuffed Kong for puppies with some banana, carrots or blueberries. Pug Dental Health The bite set you see in your puppy may change as your pooch matures. Many Pugs are born with a level bite the upper incisors and lower incisors meet edge to edge. This means that Pugs have an underbite: their lower jaw extends out slightly more than their upper jaw. Any sort of misalignment or fitting of the teeth, also known as malocclusion, can affect chewing and lead to issues with jaw discomfort. Brachycephalic dog breeds like Pugs have a normal malocclusion because their lower jaw is slightly longer than the upper. As a result, these dogs will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease. Are Pugs prone to dental issues? Both toy-sized breeds and brachycephalic breeds are prone to dental issues, including tooth decay. If dogs have 42 adult teeth, depending on how big their mouth is, they will have more space to accommodate them. The mouth of a pug is not as big as a Labrador, for instance. So their teeth will be more cramped, even if their teeth size is smaller. When teeth are crammed together, with little room between them, this can make them more prone to the development of plaque. For the same reason, cleaning that plaque off can be more difficult. It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. My recommendation is Petplan pet insurance , who cover a wide range of veterinary treatments for dogs, including dental treatments. Apart from periodontal disease, Pugs can suffer from other dental problems including: Gum disease. Just like us they have baby teeth, and Pugs really are no different; Pugs will teethe. I have a very clear memory of when we got our first ever dog. During the puppy months we would find tiny teeth on the floor which would come out as he chewed everything in sight to relieve his sore teeth and gums. This chewing is a huge part of the teething process, but is something you can actually help your Pug puppy with. So, today I want to share everything I have learned about why Pugs teethe, at what age they lose their baby or milk teeth, what to expect as an owner, and how to help them plus ways to stop them chewing your furniture! My intention is for this to be the only guide you would ever need to read about the dental development of your Pug. This is completely normal during the teething phases. But when should you expect this to start and then finally stop? Pug puppy baby teeth start coming through — between 2 and 3 weeks old Pugs are born without teeth. The 2-week point in their life is a massive time in their growth and becoming the Pugs we know and love. Of course, most Pug owners will never get to see this phase in their dental development stage as Pug puppies should not be leaving their mother until they are at least 8 weeks old. Canine teeth at which point they can start on solid foods. Pre-molars stop coming through after about 6 weeks. By 8 weeks of age, your Pug should have grown all of its 28 milk teeth. Pug starts teething and growing adult teeth — 12 weeks of age onwards The next stage of dental development is the teething phase. Handy Hint: Are you struggling with potty training your Pug puppy? This stepped training process to house training might help. When do Pugs lose their baby teeth? Pug puppies will lose their baby teeth at around 3 months or 12 weeks old. This the age at which Pugs start to teeth as they lose the milk teeth which fall out. There are 28 baby teeth in total, and surprisingly, 32 adult teeth which will grow through in the place of the milk teeth. Pug teething age will vary, but typically starts at 3 months. Image copyright C Deluvio Unsplash. Pug puppies stop teething — 7 to 8 months of age When do Pugs stop teething? Pug puppies will typically stop teething at around 7 to 8 months old. Pug adult teeth take a lot longer to grow and push through compared to their baby milk teeth. The molars at the back are the ones that are particularly stubborn. At the very latest, your 8-month-old Pug puppy should have stopped teething. Anything after that age would be unusual, but still not unheard of. Most Pugs will now have all 42 adult teeth. Handy Hint: Pug puppies will be born blind. Find out what age their eyes will start to open fully. Signs of teething in Pug puppies As you might have already experienced with your Pug puppy, the first sign of teething is them chewing everything in sight. Small baby teeth: One of the more obvious signs is finding their cute little teeth. They might be on the floor, embedded in a toy, or near a food bowl. Blood spots on toys: As Pugs teethe, they will chew on their toys to relieve the pain. This can result in blood when baby teethe come out or gums are irritated. Lots of drooling: Teething puppies can drool, so expect to see more saliva than usual coming from their mouths. Even more chewing: When Pugs teethe, they need to relieve the pain and the best way to do this is by chewing. Give them chew toys and keep them away from anything that you value! Sore gums: Teething Pugs will get inflamed and red gums. They will look really sore, because the larger adult teeth are pushing up through. Change in behavior: Your Pug puppy will be in pain from time to time and might even be irritable. Try to distract them with teething toys and lots of attention. Mild fever: If you have ever had kids, you will know that they can get a little hot when teething. Pug puppies are the same. Misaligned teeth: As the adult teeth come through, they might not always push a baby tooth. Your Pug might have a bit of a redneck look at the two teeth sit together until the milk tooth falls out. Recommended Pug teething toys All puppies need something to chew on when new teeth are coming through. They will try to chew your shoes, furniture… pretty much anything. To help your Pug puppy when teething, instead invest in some teething toys that are hard and durable enough to give their gums relief. There are two teething toys we used with our own puppy which always worked a treat. Not only is a great for Pugs to get their teeth around, but you can also put treats inside of it to mentally challenge them as well. What we also used to do was place ours in the freezer before letting our teething puppy have. That way it was really nice and cold and helped to soothe his sore gums. My second recommendation is the Nylabone dog chew on Amazon. This is how much they will end up chewing it! You might have to hide things, reduce their access to certain rooms, and keep a close eye on them. Chew proof your home: You might need to install stair gates to restrict access to certain rooms where your prized furniture is located. You might have to move things above their height. Nothing is safe from a teething Pug puppy! Give them frozen treats: As well as chew toys, a piece of frozen carrot or an ice cube can really help to soothe their sore gums. Keep them exercised: Pugs that have energy to burn will chew more than those that are tired out. Give your Pug puppy a couple of walks a day and provide plenty of indoor play time too. Keep them entertained: Bored Pugs tend to be destructive. Get their toys out to keep them mentally challenged and distracted whilst teething. Puppies can cause utter devastation whilst teething. You just need to look at how chewed the corner of our wooden dining room table was during the teething phase. Pug teething can last a while and your furniture will know it! Did You Know? If you find that your Pug continues to chew on things after teething has finished then it could be the sign of something else. This can include stress, boredom, worms, gastrointestinal problems, or even a dietary deficiency. What other owners say I am part many different Pug social media groups, and recently asked people about their own experiences with their own puppies and teething. Bored Pugs will start chewing your things when they teethe. Nylabone and Kong Toys are two of my faves. Bully sticks and Himalayan cheese sticks are good. We also use real bones from the meat department at our local store, frozen so they last longer, and our dogs love them. If your Pug is teething and eats dry food try and soften the biscuits as chewing hard food can be a big turn off put for them as their gums can be quite sensitive. Puppies crave different things at different times and are learning what their teeth can do in addition to the teething that they are going through. I recommend 20 different teething toys and rotate them. They hate the smell and it will stop them chewing your stuff. And give him chews. It is boredom that makes them chew more than anything. Just put a knot in each end and wet them, then freeze them! He loved it and still just loves playing with tea towels now at nearly 2 years old. Would recommend putting the tea towel in a food bag when freezing. How much pain they are will vary from puppy to puppy — our own dog had quite mild teething pain from what we could tell, but it depends on the dog. But, almost all of them will chew. You can expect to see little teeth on the floor or stuck into things they have chewed on, plus those little blood spots I mentioned. At this time of their dental development, your puppy will need your love and support, plenty of chewable toys, patience, and understanding. Pug Teeth and Dental Care Overview Whether you have a puppy, an adult, or a senior, there are some fundamentals to know regarding your Pug's teeth. Puppies go through a somewhat intense teething phase, adults need to have their teeth kept clean to avoid common dental issues seen with brachycephalic breeds, and seniors may be dealing with age-related dental problems. This section will cover some of the most commonly asked questions, as well as cover the important aspects of proper dental care. No, newborns are born without teeth. But, the first set of teeth milk teeth, also known as deciduous teeth come in at the 6 to 8-week mark. So, by the time a Pug puppy goes to their new home, those teeth are typically in place. What age does a Pug puppy start teething? The teething phase, when the 28 deciduous teeth fall out and are replaced by 42 adult teeth starts around the 4-month mark and generally ends by the 9-month mark. This will be a time of intense itching and strong chewing urges, so there are some things you'll want to do when a Pug puppy is teething including proofing the house and offering a good supply of good chew toys. What happens if a puppy swallows a milk tooth? If a tooth falls out while a pup is eating or drinking, it very well may be swallowed. Because it is so tiny, this generally does not cause a problem. It passes through the body and comes out with the stools. What happens if an adult tooth starts coming in before a milk tooth falls out? This is not that uncommon with brachycephalic breeds. In most cases, it is best to have the veterinarian take a look. There may be a need for the milk tooth to be removed so that the adult tooth can slide into its correct place. If not, there may be alignment issues. The removal of a milk tooth is a rather simple process since it is tiny and the roots are very shallow. Are Pugs prone to dental issues? Yes, both toy-sized breeds and brachycephalic breeds are prone to dental issues, so it's not uncommon for Pugs to be susceptible to tooth decay and other related problems. This is due mainly to 42 adult teeth fitting into a compressed jawbone as opposed to many other breeds in which those 42 teeth fit into a much more extended space. When teeth are crammed together in this way, with little room between them, this can make them more prone to the development of plaque. In addition, cleaning that plaque off can be more difficult. For this reason, Pug owners are encouraged to make at-home dental care a top priority. Another problem sometimes seen with brachycephalic breeds like the Pug involves overcrowding. This can lead to more brittle teeth and breakage. A veterinarian can detect overcrowding early, as deciduous give way to the adult set. In some cases, molars may need to be removed to keep middle and front teeth from slanting. Is it normal for a Pug to lose an adult tooth? It is not normal, per say, in the fact that it's hoped a dog's adult teeth will stay in place for their lifetime. However, it is not uncommon for senior dogs to have some tooth loss. This is by and large preventable with routine dental hygiene at home and dental exams and cleanings by the veterinarian. What type of bite set does a Pug have? This said, some Pugs have more pronounced underbites and some have a more level bite meaning that the upper incisors and lower incisors meet edge to edge. It should be noted that the bite set you see with a puppy may change as the dog matures. Many Pugs are born with a level bite and the underbite develops as the dog grows. Since the lower jaw often continues to grow after the upper jaw has reached it development, a noticeable underbite during the early puppy phase should be watched. With Pugs, a very pronounced underbite should be routinely assessed by the veterinarian since any sort of misalignment, also known as malocclusion, can affect chewing or lead to issues with jaw discomfort. If your Pug does not have the classic slight undershot, there is no reason to be overly concerned unless you were planning on using your Pug in a breeding program. Since a dog's bite set is a genetic trait, a faulty bite would be passed down to future litters. At Home Dental Care for a Pug At-home dental care and professional care as needed , is vital for all dogs. Every second, around-the-clock, plaque is being produced. It is a clear, sticky substance that clings to teeth. It is not fully removed from chewing on toys or treats. Within 3 days, it starts to harden into tartar also referred to as calculus , which is much more difficult to remove. Tartar can also travel under the gum line where it damages teeth, unseen. This often leads to tooth decay, gingivitis gum disease , periodontal disease, and eventual tooth loss. There can also be tooth infection s , an infection that travels up into the sinuses, and the risk of full-body sepsis which can be fatal. As you can imagine, halitosis bad breath is common as well. It is important to rule out current decay, infection, periodontal disease and other issues that cannot be resolved with at-home care. The veterinarian will take an x-ray, examine the teeth and any current issues will be treated. Then, you can implement an at-home program of proper dental hygiene to help prevent future issues. Brushing is one of the most effective methods to remove plaque, keep the teeth clean, and prevent bad breath. Not all dogs sit nice and still for this; however, it is worth an effort since a dog can certainly become accustomed to this. Here are some tips: Use an appropriately sized canine toothbrush. Most are sized for dogs in general so those designed for puppies are typically best for Pugs 10 lbs. And, an adult-sized brush will often be best for those over 10 lbs. Brushes with 3 sides can be helpful since these cover the top and sides of the teeth all at once compared to a flat brush that only scrubs one surface. A finger-brush can be used to help a dog get used to having his teeth touched or be used in place of a brush. This is a small, rubber-tipped doodad that slips over your pointer finger. Never use human toothpaste. Human toothpaste contains fluoride which is toxic to canines, possibly contains xylitol which is toxic to canines, and has foaming agents which can make a dog choke. Opt for a canine paste that is flavored to encourage tolerance to brushings; vanilla or chicken are good choices. Brush for a good 2 to 3 minutes, once per day. While it is perfectly safe for a dog to swallow quality canine paste, you may wish to wipe excess paste away with a clean piece of gauze. If you'd like to start brushing your Pug's teeth, the Nylabone Advanced Oral Care Triple Action Dental Kit is a nice set that contains both a 3-sided brush and a tube of effective paste. There are different types of dental supplement products for dogs, with most either marketed as a replacement for brushing or to be used in conjunction with it. Some may also help prevent bad breath, but this is often due to a reduction of plaque and not as an actual equivalent of human breath mints. Dental aids such as this include sprays, liquid supplements added to a dog's water, wipes, and powders that are added to food. If your Pug does not tolerate having their teeth brushed or if you wish to add on to the current dental hygiene plan that you have for your puppy or dog, you may want to consider Premium Pet Dental Spray by Pets Are Kids Too. This is both a spray and a water supplement. It is meant to be sprayed on the teeth each day; two to three sprays on the teeth and gums of each side. It can also be added to a dog's water with 1 spray mixed into each 1 cup of water. Regardless of whether you brush or not, how often you do it, and if you use a supplement or not, it can be very beneficial to offer a dental chew. This are edible chews designed to loosen and remove plaque as they are being gnawed on. They are very hard, by design, so all Pugs should be supervised when given these. While these do not usually have a whole lot of nutritional value, they usually do contain a moderate amount of calories, so it is best to offer one a day in place of one of a Pug's regular dry snack. One of the most popular choices is Greenies Dental Chews which offers several different sizes based on a dog's weight, grain-free options, and flavor options including blueberry. Bringing Your Pug for Professional Cleanings Even with stringent at-home cleanings and care, many dogs need professional cleanings every 1 to 3 years. Pre-screening is done to ensure that a dog is healthy enough for anesthesia. The entire dental treatment generally includes x-rays to assess both teeth and bones, a rinse to kill bacteria in the mouth, a dental probe to measure pockets between teeth and gums, scaling of teeth usually with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar both above and below the gum line, and teeth polishing. A plaque-guard agent may be applied. Best Snacks for a Pug - With this breed that is prone to carrying excess weight, choosing healthy snacks is super important. We have the complete guide on helping you through this developmental stage, as well as some tips on how to keep your little friend happy and healthy during this period. When Do Pugs Stop Teething? The puppy teething stage generally lasts 3 — 5 months, depending on the individual. Puppies begin getting their first teeth as young as two weeks old. Their baby teeth will fall out at about three to four months old to make room for 42 permanent adult teeth. What Is Pug Puppy Teething? In the same way that human babies and children lose and grow new teeth during their development, all puppies do as well. Both babies and puppies get deciduous teeth, aka milk teeth, baby teeth, or primary teeth that fall out during different developmental stages. Pug Teething Developmental Stages Explained Unlike human babies who are teething, a teething puppy is often mistaken for suffering from behavioral problems. Luckily there are teething stages to help you understand what your puppy is experiencing. Weeks 2 — 4 At the neonatal stage newborn to two weeks old puppies are blind, toothless, blind, and deaf. In addition, newborn puppies do not have teeth. Their teeth start developing during the transitional stage weeks old. According to Dr. During the first teething stage, she can hear, smell and her eyes will open. Weeks 4 — 8 At the weeks stage, the canines premolars and molars start appearing, and pups get all 28 baby teeth. At weeks, the premolars and molars begin to grow behind the canines. During this stage, the inhibited biting starts. Bite inhibition is also referred to as soft mouth, meaning that a puppy learns how to control the strength of her bite. They learn bit inhibition through socialization by playing with other puppies. This will help them get used to the routine and instill good oral hygiene. The arrival of these sharp canines is when the mother begins weaning her pups off her teats. Weeks 8 — 16 At about eight weeks of age, a Pug pup will start losing her milk teeth as the permanent teeth start pushing through the gums. Again, this is a natural process without any interaction from you. In most cases, the baby teeth will simply fall out. The process starts when permanent incisors replace the incisors. At about four months of age, the baby molars are replaced by permanent molars. By 6 — 8 months old, your Pug will have developed all their adult teeth. They start with 28, and when they get their adult teeth, they gain an extra four premolars and ten molars. Like all dogs, Pugs will develop 42 adult teeth, ten more than us! Signs and Symptoms Explained One of the first signs your puppy is teething is when they start chewing anything they can get their teeth on. Chewing on everything: Chewing is a natural dog instinct. But if your puppy goes out of her way to sink her teeth into everything you own, she is likely teething. Frequent drooling: Teething puppies tend to have excessive pain in their mouths and gums. Because of this, she will drool more than usual. Read this article to find out why Pugs drool. Slow to eat: A once voracious eater that has slowed her eating habits likely means her mouth hers when she eats. Read this article to find out why Pugs cry. Ensure she has durable toys to keep her busy. We used this Kong toy for Mindy. Pugs get their first set of teeth between 2 and 3 weeks old, around the same time that they are opening their eyes! Typically teeth come in this order — incisors front teeth , canine teeth, and then pre-molars. By 8 weeks of age, pug puppies should have their full set of 28 milk teeth the dog version of baby teeth! Stage 2: Teething and Losing Milk Teeth 12 weeks to 8 months. By 12 weeks or about 3 months, puppies can begin to lose their baby teeth. Those 28 baby teeth will be replaced with 42 adult teeth by 8 months of age. Like people, teething can happen at slightly different timeframes for different puppies. Some may have all of their adult teeth by 6 months, and some may take longer than 8 months to get their last adult teeth. Pug puppies get a set of 28 baby teeth by 8 weeks. By 8 months of age, pugs will have their full set of 42 adult teeth. They may just be a late bloomer, but if their adult teeth have come through and the baby teeth are still there, the baby teeth may need pulled. Keep in mind that your pug may lose teeth without you ever seeing their shed teeth. See a vet. These are called retained teeth and they are more common in brachycephalic breeds including pugs. They are roughly the size of a piece of rice and are unlikely to cause digestive issues. You may find small amounts of blood on toys. Extra drooling — yep, just like babies, they will drool more when their teeth are coming in. Tons of chewing. When their gums are irritated, they want to chew chew chew! Painful gums. Sore gums that may be darker pink or red. May be slow or hesitant to eat. Behavior changes. Changes in mood or behavior. When your puppy is in pain, this can impact their behavior some. Low grade fever. The inflammation caused by teething can cause a small fever in puppies. Chewing on kongs can help sooth their sore gums. You can freeze some foods on kong toys like dog-safe peanut butter and the cold can feel good on their sore gums. Nylabone or other chew toys. Be sure to monitor the toy to make sure you toss it out after your dog has chewed it enough. Bully sticks or himalayan chews. Rawhide is dangerous as they can cause digestive blockages. Bully sticks and himalaya chews are safer options that let dogs chew for a long time and get a treat out of it. Teething gel. There are some brands that make dog-safe teething gel, similar to oragel that people use on human babies. Gum Massages. Sometimes just rubbing their gums can feel good to them! They will be chewing on most anything they can get their teeth on, so keeping their environment safe for them is key. Keep them safe. Try frozen treats, they can soothe their gums. Give them chew toys. Keep them busy, both physically and mentally. Generally with pug puppies, keeping them mentally stimulated will help keep them on their best behavior as much or more than making sure they get enough exercise. Help train bite inhibition. Teething overlaps with the time period when puppies are learning about their teeth and how they can inflict pain. One big benefit of puppies staying with their mother and littermates longer is puppies naturally teach each other that biting hurts, by yelping when they are hurt. There is a term called bite inhibition that is all about this phase where puppies learn about not biting too hard. Dental health — Start young! If you have a puppy, now is the best time to start caring for their teeth! Pugs are particularly prone to dental health problems because they have small mouths. There are three popular styles of dog toothbrushes. This way you can try both styles to see what your pug responds best to. Many pugs have overcrowded teeth and crooked teeth which can increase their odds of developing decay and infections. When a baby pug is born, they have no teeth at all. However, by the time the pup reaches the six to eight-week age mark, their milk teeth will have started to come in. These baby teeth are also known as deciduous teeth — because they do fall out and are supposed to fall out. Read more about Do Pugs Have Underbites? Pug babies go through an intense phase when they are teething. So by the time you get your pug baby home, they will have these milk teeth, of which there are .Pug Teeth At Four Months Old This is the age when puppies lose their baby teeth, which are replaced with 42 adult teeth. This process can take up to five months. By the age of nine months, your pug pup should have all its grown-up, permanent teeth. Your pug pup will experience the urge to chew, so make sure you have lots of good quality, safe, and non-toxic teething toys on hand. Whilst losing teeth is normal for pug pups, it is not normal for adult pugs. So if your big pug has lost a tooth then something is going on. Pugs are fairly prone to plaque and tooth decay because many adult teeth are squeezed into a relative smallmouth. The overcrowding of teeth can result in them becoming brittle, and breaking. Senior Pugs It is not uncommon for senior dogs to lose the odd tooth, or for a tooth to chip or break. Pug Dental Care At Home It is advisable to get into a good dental care routine for your pug at home, to help prevent tooth decay and subsequent tooth loss. Plaque Plaque that is left untreated will develop into tartar that is hard to remove. This leads to decay, gum disease , possible infection, and tooth loss. This starts with brushing their teeth every day. Dogs may find this a bit weird so try to get them used to it from a young age. Ensure you use a small toothbrush for their small mouths and one that is three-sided. There are dog toothpaste brands on the market that are much more palatable to dogs and thus encourage them to allow you to brush teeth each day. Opt for chicken flavored toothpaste. Check price on Amazon Dental Treats You can also buy dog treats that are designed for the dog to eat; the shape of the treats is usually ridged and therefore will rub away some of the plaque from their teeth. You can give these once per day as long as they do not lead to weight gain. Raw Food If you do not wish to give your dog this type of processed food treat, consider giving them a large raw bone with meat and cartilage still attached. Professional Pug Dental Care Your vet will most likely advise that your pug have their teeth professionally cleaned by them once a year. Pug Tooth Loss: Conclusion Pugs, like all pups, are born with no teeth. This is because they do not need teeth to drink milk! By the age of 8 weeks, they should have their deciduous, or baby teeth so that they can eat solid foods. These 24 teeth will fall out by the time your pug is around 9 months of age, a process that usually starts at 4 months of age. Pugs have 42 adult teeth. They have a small mouth compared to other dog breeds, yet still, have the same number of teeth. Vets will be able to tell if future overcrowding is going to be a problem, and may advise the removal of some teeth to avoid overcrowding. Like humans, dogs get plaque buildup on their teeth which, if not cleaned away regularly, can lead to tartar, decay, tooth loss, and infection and disease of the tooth and gums. Similarly, a once-yearly professional clean at your local vet clinic can help your pug keep their teeth well into their senior years. Family Dog Expert Author Hi there!
