What are "mismarks" in Labradors? Color oddities "mismarks" have occurred from time to time and have been well documented throughout the breed history of the purebred Labrador Retriever. Such mismarks have includes black and tan markings, brindling, some white markings and ring-around-the-tail markings. It is unknown as to whether mismarks appear because of recessive genes from generations ago or whether they are the result of a spontaneous mutation. Although mismarks occur naturally in Labradors, these mismarks are rare. Breeders attributed this to previous interbreeding of Labradors with Gordon Setters during the early history of the breed. Because this trait was considered undesirable as a characteristic of the breed, breeders chose not to breed individuals expressing the trait in hopes of reducing frequency of its expression in future offspring. Because this allele is recessive, it may be passed through many generations before a breeder is aware that the allele is present. This explains the low frequency of expression of this trait in the current Labrador population. Brindling describes alternating expression of black and red color in the hair throughout the coat. There are several possible causes for this fault that occasionally appears in Labs. Alternatively, brindling in Labs may be the result of what geneticists call a mosaic. A mosaic indicates differences in the somatic tissue of heterozygotes that come about during mitotic division of somatic cells recall from above that somatic cells are those that make-up the body. There are two possible ways by which an individual may become a mosaic. The first is called chromosome nondisjunction by which during division into daughter cells, one of the chromosomes fails to separate from its duplicated chromosome. As a result, one daughter cell receives an extra chromosome and the other receives an unpartnered-chromosome. In either situation described above, the daughter cells of these altered somatic cells will contain the same alterations. As a result, one will observe a mosaic or brindled pattern of normal color mixed with color produced by the altered somatic cells. This condition has been reported in a Lab showing mosaic black and yellow coat color. Rather, this coat characteristic was attributed to a chromosomal alteration as described above. Some white is permissible under the AKC standard and is fairly common. There are several conditions that can produce white hair in Labs. Some of these conditions are determined by color genes and others may be caused by environmental factors that effect melanin production. Certainly white hairs and even patches are easily traced throughout the history of the Labrador Retriever. White Spots To analyze the reason why some black Labs have only a few white hairs on their chests or undersides, while others have white spots or patches, it is best to first understand that all Labs are white the condition of having no melanin. The gene loci for color control both the color of the pigment as well as the distribution of melanocytes throughout the body of the Lab. Therefore, in a black Lab, although color is determined by alleles at the B locus, alleles at the A and E loci determine even distribution of the color over the entire surface of the coat. Therefore, although all Labs should be homozygous for the S allele at the S gene locus, some may still express white hairs on the chest, bottom of the feet and under the arms and groin areas. Bolo Mark "Bolo marks" get their name from champion Labrador, Banchory Bolo, who lived from .Bolo was the first dog in England to earn dual championships. Where things become confusing is how a fawn-colored dog is determined as the AKC range for this color is anything from light to medium. Fawn Pug The most common color, about two-thirds of all Pugs are in the fawn color range, which is a light to medium cream. Silver, or silver-fawn Pugs, are not very common. This color is the lightest you will find in this breed as it is like a light, silvery cream. On the other hand, Apricot-fawn or apricot Pugs have a cream-colored coat with warm, shiny orange undertones. Like silver Pugs, apricot-colored dogs are not very common. The most common marking is the mask, in which the face has black markings that start at the chin, cover the muzzle, and surround the eyes. The mask can vary quite a bit, covering almost the entire face or separated between the muzzle and eyes. Some have light-colored hairs throughout their masks. But in the show ring, the darker the Pug mask, the better. On non-black Pugs, trace and thumbprint markings are also sometimes visible. These markings are desired in the show ring of all kennel clubs, although not all Pugs will have these markings. Just like with their mask, thicker and darker traces are more desirable when being shown. Although irregular in shape, the thumbprint is most often seen as circular or oval. The thumbprint is caused by the shadows of the wrinkles and its darker-colored fur. Some dogs also have markings known as smuttiness. Smuttiness refers to black hairs covering an otherwise light coat, forming a gray coloration on a dog. These darker hairs can occur anywhere on a dog, including the legs, saddle, and head. The denser these hairs, the more smuttiness a dog has. Smuttiness is considered a fault and is not desirable for show dogs. It might be tricky trying to predict the color of a Labradoodle pup, as this is greatly determined by their genetics. Labrador Retriever Colors Labrador Retrievers usually come in all solid colors. Most common ones include yellow, black, chocolate, red, white, and silver. Some of the more rare Labrador Retriever colors are, in fact, color combinations. These include black with white markings on the chest, black and tan, or brindle. The most common colors we see on Poodles are black, blue, silver, gray, white, brown, cream, apricot, silver beige, red, and cafe au lait. Additionally, some Poodles can also come in a variety of color combinations like black and brown, black and tan, black and apricot, black and cream, brown and apricot, brown and white, and many others. Labradoodle Color Chart Labradoodles come in all shapes and sizes, coat types, and colors. Apricot Labradoodles have a rich colored coat resembling the inside of a ripe apricot. Hence the name apricot Labradoodle. Apricot Labradoodles usually have a black nose and their hair color is typically the same throughout the coat. The tip of the strand will be either black or brown and the color at the root may be red, tan or apricot. Because the top inch or so of the strands of hair are either black or chocolate, at birth a sable Labradoodle will appear to be a black or chocolate dog. Once the strands start to grow out, the change color becomes visible. The amount of time it takes to see the second color varies from birth through to about six weeks of age. Since Labradoodles do not shed, at least as little as any dog is capable of not shedding, they do not generally grow new strands of hair. This can also involve wiping tear stains away with a damp cloth, on top of regular duties like brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and checking ears. Instead, you should use terms that describe the similar, but official, shades. This includes apricot, cream, gold, and so on. Choosing a reputable breeder is vital. Puppy mills and backyard breeders tend to jump on trends for certain breeds. But, puppies from these places are often not bred from healthy parents, not well-cared for, and can grow up to have severe behavioral problems.
