English Bulldog swims on a clean water pool. Here are a few examples to help you get started during your search: Skin Condition and Age The best shampoo for your English Bulldog should match its breed-specific coat and skin care needs. Several moisturizing formulas are ideal for treating itchiness or bacterial infections like skin fold pyoderma. Ingredients Consider looking for dog shampoo containing natural ingredients and vitamins, like aloe vera, vitamin E, oatmeal, and coconut oil. These formulas are less likely to cause skin irritation than a shampoo with harsh detergents, sulfates, and parabens. Fragrance Shampoos with artificial fragrances are more likely to trigger skin allergies in some English Bulldogs. In contrast, others recommend diluting it with water before applying it to your dog to reduce potential skin irritation caused by its concentrated ingredients. Consider bathing your English Bulldog every six to eight weeks to prevent escalating their potential skin problems. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. Breed and coat type Dogs have a variety of coat textures, including short, long, curly, wiry or double coats. Below are some examples of coat types and textures, and what shampoo to use for each. Short-coated breeds: Dogs with short hair, like boxers and dalmatians, generally have low-maintenance coats but they can still benefit from shampoos that gently cleanse while maintaining the natural oils of the skin, according to Satchu. For short-haired dogs, consider shampoos with moisturizing ingredients like oatmeal or aloe vera. Long-coated breeds: These include Afghan hounds and Yorkshire terriers, and often require more frequent grooming to prevent the hair from tangling but no more than once every two weeks, according to our experts. Shampoos with conditioning and hydrating ingredients like shea butter and oatmeal help detangle hair to make grooming easier and keep the coat looking sleek, says Satchu. Double-coated breeds: Breeds with double coats, like huskies, samoyeds and golden retrievers, should use a shampoo that helps manage shedding to keep their undercoat healthy. Look for shampoos with omega fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, for example to increase coat health and reduce excessive shedding, according to Satchu. White-coated breeds: If your dog has a white coat, they will benefit from shampoos that are labeled as coat color brighteners, which contain optical brighteners to make the coat appear whiter and more vibrant, according to Satchu. Some shampoos are also designed to enhance and maintain the colors of other coat types, including black coats or those with unique patterns. Ingredients You should always use shampoos specifically formulated for dogs because human-grade formulas are more likely to cause skin irritation, says Satchu. Generally, look for ingredients like aloe vera or colloidal oatmeal consisting of finely ground oats , which are gentle, hydrating and have soothing properties, according to our experts. And, because dogs have extremely sensitive noses, you should also avoid heavy fragrances in their shampoo, according to Rona. Skin sensitivities and allergies Some breeds, like bulldogs and shar peis, are more prone to skin sensitivities and allergies, according to Satchu. These breeds will benefit from hypoallergenic oatmeal- or aloe vera-based shampoos that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. If your dog has skin irritation, infections or inflammation, you should talk to your veterinarian for a medicated shampoo recommendation, according to Mayhew. How often should you shampoo your dog? Experts recommend bathing your dog at least once every three months , but many breeds may require more frequent baths depending on how much time they spend outdoors or any skin or coat problems they might have, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Brush your dog before and after bathing. For long-coated breeds specifically, you should always brush your dog before bathing to prevent matting, according to Mayhew. After shampooing, use a cream rinse or conditioner. Avoid using human shampoo or other products not intended for dogs as they can disrupt their natural pH, according to experts. Use a detangling spray after bathing, especially if your dog has a long or thick coat that gets easily tangled. Our favorite dog shampoo is Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe , which is fragrance-free, lathers easily, and combines finely ground oatmeal with organic aloe vera for nutrient-rich skin treatment. But we identified several other shampoos that might be more suitable for your dog's skin and coat. Our Top Picks. We should note that a medicated or anti-itch shampoo may not be necessary for your Bulldog, but we suggested them because Bulldogs are more prone to skin infections than other types of dogs. This is mostly due to their skin folds, which are part of the reason why we love them. But the truth is that these skin folds create a warm and moist environment for bacteria to grow in. But when given the right environment in which to grow, bacteria can multiply in such a way that it is unhealthy and can actually cause discomfort for your dog. If this happens, bacterial skin infections can occur, which can cause itchiness, skin redness, hair loss, and even skin crusting and flakiness. Bacterial skin infections often require a medicated shampoo to treat, which is why we suggested a few for you. However, your vet can also recommend a reliable medicated shampoo as well. The bottom line is that anti-itch shampoos are okay to use with Bulldogs in any situation, but not all Bulldogs will require a shampoo that is medicated. Conclusion We love English Bulldogs due to their wrinkled appearance, but those wrinkles can also lead to skin problems as well. If you need something medicated, there are several great options on our list for that as well. Whatever your Bulldog needs as far as shampoo goes, we hope you found it with our product suggestions and reviews. She is currently living in the United States with her husband and daughter. I recommend bathing a Bulldog monthly or every two months. If you bathe a Bulldog any more than that, you are risking stripping him of natural oils. This can result in dry, itchy skin and a damaged, unhealthy coat. However, not bathing your dog enough can result in the opposite problem, leading to excessive oil buildup. This is why a consistent bathing schedule and a good, high-quality dog shampoo are so important. This product includes oatmeal to help alleviate any dry or irritated skin. It is also hypoallergenic, which means it is helpful for Bulldogs with sensitive skin or allergies. Best of all, this product is tear free! This brand is full of natural ingredients for sensitive skin. This product deodorizes that stinky Bulldog in need of a bath. However, our favorite thing about this product is the baking soda. Baking soda helps to alleviate itching while also working as a natural deodorant. This product is not only cleansing but conditioning, leaving your Bulldog clean and smelling fresh. It also strengthens and regenerates his skin cells with chamomile. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. WELCOME The Northern Ireland Boxer Rescue Society was formed on 12th October by a group of concerned boxer owners and breeders who were worried about the large number of boxer puppies being bred by back street breeders and puppy farmers mills with no thought or concern for the puppies they produced. Our aim is to help the welfare of the Boxer Breed - specifically those that through no fault of their own become homeless, whether this occurs due to a change in the owners circumstances or because they have been callously abused or abandoned. We compile and maintain a list of people who are prepared to take on a rescue dog and provide a secure and loving home for the rest of the boxers life. All the people on our list have been "home checked" and approved by our committee members who complete a detailed questionnaire to help us select the right home for a particular dog. Please be aware that not everyone passes a home check by us and a promise made to you by the new owner as regards spaying etc, may not actually happen. DONATIONS As with all rescue organisations, we depend on donations through car boot sales, raffle tickets and the like, to help us meet the ongoing kennel and veterinary fees. Please remember, no donation is ever too small. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. We take in Boxers and sometimes Boxer crosses from pounds, adverts and abandonment cases from all over Northern Ireland. In December a small group of Facebook friends decided that enough was enough after seeing large numbers of Boxers in pounds. Since then we have rescued and rehomed 37 boxers and 6 boxer crosses. Fourty-three dogs in total. We frequently assist other rescue groups in helping them find forever homes for their rescues. We share photos of dogs seeking homes, offer advice to people who seek to rehome their dogs and often do home checks for groups who are too far away to do them. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated team who travel the length and breadth of Northern Ireland rescuing strays and cruelty cases from pounds some of these dogs are hours away from being put to sleep. We use experienced in home fosters so we do not pay kennel fees also this gives dogs who may have never been in a home environment a bit of home comforts and helps them adjust to Family life ie hoovers and washing machines. We spay and neuter all dogs who come to us and we prefer rehome in Northern Ireland so as we can keep check that everything is running smoothly and there are no problems. It also helps when doing home checks. If you would like to offer one of our rescues a forever home please check the Adoptions Page to see our latest boxers seeking homes. He has been taught sit, "high five" and down position. He has not however been taught much lead manners. He needs a bit off work in that department. I would reccomend some obedience classes for him as he is very clever. Very friendly with adults, children and dogs. He can be over friendly with dogs in that all he wants is play and he can be a bit "full on". Loves his toys and balls. He needs a fully enclosed garden and he would suit an energenic active Family who enjoy the outdoors. Axel had been left from 6 am - 8 pm by his previous owner. So flexible working hours I feel would best suit this boy. Or someone who works from home. No small children as he is so boisterious. Proudly created with Wix.

Splitting into a separate breed in , the American Cocker Spaniel was the most popular dog in the US through the s and s. While Cocker Spaniels have fallen in popularity since the mids, French Bulldogs have skyrocketed to the No. In the hybrid or designer dog world, the term Cocker Spaniel takes on a whole new meaning. Cocker Spaniels appear commonly in mixed breeds because of desired spaniel traits like a sweet expression, sporting qualities, loyalty, and friendliness. The French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel is no exception, embodying a docile and kind nature and combining it with a small size, moderate exercise requirements, and compatibility with other animals and family members. French Cocker Spaniels make excellent companion dogs, both affectionate and loyal. What is the history of the French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel mix? Bulldogs descended from Molossian dogs of Greek heritage that also gave rise to the Mastiff. The shorter dogs comprised a branch of dogs that would eventually split into three groups once baiting bulls became illegal. One of these groups was the miniature version of the English Bulldog, popularized among the lace workers of Nottingham, England. Toy Bulldogs had already seen outcrossing with rattiers, and more rat terrier-type dogs were sought when enthusiasts took their miniatures to Normandy France. French breeders refined the French Bulldog , and many believe they introduced the Pug for a flatter face and more prominent eyes. Americans finalized the breed standard, insisting on what has become the signature bat ears. Spaniels are one of the oldest breed-types, used to flush game. Land spaniels would eventually divide further into springers and setters, according to Mycockerspaniel. Springing spaniels produced three size variations of prized gundogs from the large Springer Spaniel to the Cocker Spaniel with the Sussex in between. Cocker Spaniels developed a specialty for hunting Woodcock. American Cocker Spaniels, similarly to German shepherds, were developed mainly as show dogs but had differences specific for hunting American Woodcocks in contrast to the Eurasian Woodcock. What is the possible appearance of a Frenchie Cocker Spaniel mix? French Bulldogs are 12 inches tall and weigh up to 28 pounds. They look like miniature Bulldogs but have erect bat ears and a rounder head. Their bodies are low-slung but compact with dwarfed legs, a greatly shortened and broad muzzle, and a short sometimes screw tail. French Bulldogs have a wide range of colors, both standard and rare. Although breeders may charge high prices for unusual colors, they are often not recognized by the AKC. Standard colors for a French Bulldog include brindle, fawn, white, cream, and fawn. Unusual and highly-sought colors are black and tan, solid black, black and white, blue, and lilac. Cocker Spaniels are 14 or 15 inches tall, according to Americanspanielclub. English Cockers are 14 to 17 inches tall weighing up to 34 pounds. Cocker Spaniel colors are almost too numerous to name. Standard colors include black, brown, black and white, black and tan, buff, red, brown and tan, brown, white, and tan, and brown roan, among others. The AKC sites as nonstandard colors such as cream, blue roan, red roan, sable, and blue roan and tan. The Cocker Spaniel is in stark contrast with the French Bulldog, similar in size but with a refined head and proportionately-built, muscular but slender body. Many Cocker owners dock their dogs' tail to stay true to tradition. Your French Cocker Spaniel will likely be gray or black with tufts of white hair, brown, brindle, black, and tan, or fawn. He may have a bobtail or one that does not quite reach the hocks. Expect more refinement in your mixed dog's head and a longer muzzle than a purebred Frenchie's. He may have large bat ears, but more likely will have medium ears that drop along his face. Your French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel mix will have shortened legs, a powerful neck, and a relatively deep chest for his size. He will likely stand about 13 inches tall and weigh 25 to 30 pounds. This video illustrates that unlike some other hybrid dogs, French Bulldog Cocker Spaniels do not have a particularly distinctive appearance This mix has a refined head that retains the furrows in the brow characteristic of a Frenchie. Note the relatively short legs, brown color with a black mask, square-shaped ears, smooth coat, and rather long tail. Will you have to groom your dog like a Cocker Spaniel? French Bulldogs have a short coat with a minimal undercoat most of the time. Some Frenchies do not have any underfur. Cocker Spaniels have medium to long silky hair with a soft undercoat. A show dog is popular for her luxurious flowing hair. However, people who have pet Cockers often shave them short all over, sometimes leaving long hair on the ears and legs. Your French Cocker Spaniel may inherit a short or long-medium coat. More than likely, your hybrid's coat will be longer than a French Bulldogs with slight waves. You should brush your French Bulldog mix's coat twice or three times a week. Her hair likely will not mat like a Cocker's but may collect dirt. Bathe your dog every six to eight weeks, taking advantage of that time to clip her nails. You should check your dog's ears every week for any signs of infection, especially if they hang. Will your dog have specific health issues? While mixes do not typically struggle with quite as many health problems as their parent breeds, they inherit the more common maladies. French Bulldog Cocker Spaniels most often fight patellar luxation, eye problems, hip dysplasia, autoimmune disorders, seborrhea, breathing abnormalities, and hypothyroidism. French Bulldogs live 10 to 12 years while Cocker Spaniels live 11 to 14 years. Your French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel mix could reasonably live 12 or 13 years. Patellar Luxation Common in the toy and miniature breeds, a luxating patella means the knee cap easily pops out of place rather than glide seamlessly in its groove. It is common in Frenchies who have a malformation of their joint connections due to dwarfism. Cocker Spaniels are often born with the condition. Luxating patellas can be hereditary in your French Bulldog hybrid. Hip Dysplasia Unfortunately, hip dysplasia is common in Frenchies and Cockers, making it a possible hereditary problem of your mixed-breed dog. Eye Problems Your French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel mix could inherit protruding eyes from either parent, leaving these structures vulnerable to scratches and other injuries. As Petcarex reports, Cocker Spaniels are prone to cataracts and glaucoma and can pass these to any offspring. Primary Seborrhea Mostly affecting American Cocker Spaniels, primary seborrhea affects the skin to produce excess scaling and greasiness, leading to longterm inflammation. Hypothyroidism French Bulldogs can inherit congenital hypothyroidism as a recessive trait, but it is rare. Hypothyroidism is more common in Cocker Spaniels. If your mix inherits adult-onset hypothyroidism, she will need thyroid supplementation to avoid skin problems and other health issues. Brachycephalic Syndrome Hopefully, your mixed dog will not inherit the entire complex of respiratory difficulties from his French Bulldog parent. Still, you may notice slight snoring, snuffling, and exercise intolerance if your dog's face has moderate shortening. What is your dog's guarding potential? French Bulldogs are very friendly to everyone but may make good watchdogs if they warn you of the approach of strangers. Many Frenchies, however, are not alarmists, seeking affection indiscriminately. Cocker Spaniels, as opposed to Frenchies, are excellent watchdogs. Some Cockers may bark excessively. A few family lines of Spaniels display a phenomenon known as Cocker Rage Syndrome, whereby the dog attacks unexpectedly. Although the syndrome gained Cocker Spaniels a reputation for unprovoked aggression and perhaps affected their popularity, Cocker Rage appears in other breeds and could be a seizure disorder according to Doglistener. Your French Bulldog Cocker mix should be an effective watchdog, warning you of guests and unwelcome visitors alike. However, French Cocker Spaniels are friendly and not afraid to seek affection from anyone. You must be vigilant about socialization, so your puppy does not develop timidity and fear-biting. Do French Cocker mixes do well with other animals? French Bulldogs naturally get along with other animals. You must supervise them with large dogs, so they do not become victims of bullying or serious injury. If you socialize them well and introduce them slowly, Cocker Spaniels are amiable around other animals, especially dogs. They are also small and need monitoring around big dogs, even Labradors, and German Shepherds. The French Bulldog Cocker Spaniel mix is a friendly dog and when socialized enjoys the company of other animals. They like their people best, though, and prefer being the center of attention. You should watch your Frenchie Cocker mix around tiny animals and birds as their ancestors do have a background in flushing and ratting. How much exercise does your dog need? French Bulldogs are exercise intolerant because of their extremely shortened muzzles and dwarfed limbs, but they still require low to moderate daily exercise to avoid obesity. Thirty to 45 minutes a day is a good rule of thumb divided into multiple sessions. Cocker Spaniels do best with moderate exercise, usually about 45 to 60 minutes a day. They do not require the strenuous workouts that some other breeds do but should receive plenty of socialization and mental stimulation. French Bulldog Cocker mixes should receive 35 to 50 minutes of exercise daily. You will have to gauge how many sessions your dog needs and how much you need to restrict him based on how short his muzzle is. Make sure to supply sufficient mental stimulation and physical activities to prevent boredom and provide appropriate socialization. How smart will your dog be? French Bulldogs are not ranked very high in working intelligence or obedience, but most owners appreciate how adaptive they are. French Bulldogs also tend to react positively and appropriately to their environment. According to Dogbreedslist. How trainable and obedient your French Bulldog-Cocker Spaniel is depended on which traits she most inherits from her parents. Frenchies are renowned performers, but they also can have quite a stubborn streak. Cocker Spaniels are eager to please but can have dominant issues or become oversensitive if training does not occur during the critical socialization period between 10 and 16 weeks old. Will your dog be a good family pet? Cocker Spaniels make great family companions, especially if you work on socializing them and avoid potential psychoses in certain family lines. As the smallest members of the sporting group, Cocker Spaniels have a steady temperament and a friendly nature. They bond with all household members. Frenchies, bred mainly as companion dogs, are enthusiastic and friendly. They bond to all members of your family, showing a loving and clownish personality. Your Frenchie Cocker mix will be affectionate and steadfast, requiring almost constant attention. Children French Bulldogs do well with children as they do with everyone else, but they can become vulnerable if kids hang or lay on them. Cocker Spaniels can be nippy around children if they come from unreputable breeding practices. Otherwise, Cockers are gentle with kids. Keep your Frenchie-Cocker away from toddlers unsupervised, but otherwise, she will be a great playmate for your children. We are compensated for referring traffic and business to Amazon and other companies linked to this site. Both French bulldog and Cocker spaniel are smaller dogs. They have some similarities too. But how? The question arises. What does this French bulldog Cocker spaniel mix look like? How do they behave and act? Do they have any health issues like their parents? And how to train them? These are some of the questions in our minds. To know the history of hybrid or mix-breed dogs is difficult to understand. Mix breeding of dogs has become common only from the last 20 years or so. Such mixed breed dogs maybe only the result of an accidental breeding. The French bulldog It is a small breed of domestic dog known as Frenchie. It is a toy version of the bulldog, and french cheese is the result of the crossbreeding of the ancestors of the bulldog and local ratters. So it was the outcome of a bulldog and local ratters matting. Cocker spaniel Cocker spaniels were bred as hunting dogs. They got the term Cocker from their use of hunt. Cocker spaniel coats have various colors like liver, black, red, and golden in solids. Size, weight, and age The dog will have shortened legs, a powerful neck, and a deep chest. The dog will be 13 inches tall and will weigh around pounds. He may have a longer muzzle, bat ears. There is a possibility that he will have medium ears that drop along his face. The age of french bulldog cocker spaniel mix may live up to 12 or 13 years. Personality The mix of a French bulldog and Cocker spaniel is very devoted, intelligent, and loyal as both parents of this mix are very friendly and loving. So the mixed breed is friendly but always acts as a good watchdog. He loves to have fun and loves to go outdoors to play. Coat of the mix of a French bulldog and Cocker spaniel The coat of the French bulldog is short, whereas the Cocker spaniel has medium to long silky hair with a soft undercoat. So the coat of the mix of these two will be longer with mild waves. The coat may collect dirt, so brushing of the coat twice a week is needed. Bathing is necessary every 6 to 8 weeks. Ears are also required to clean and check if they are facing problems in hearing. This mixed breed should get professional grooming. Keep the floors clean. Please bath them but not so much that their skin dries up. Watchdog The French bulldog, Cocker spaniel mix, may be a good watchdog, keeping the unwelcomed guests at bay. But it is also True that the owner should be vigilant as this mixed breed is very social. Friendly with other pets It is a friendly dog. The mix likes people. The French bulldog, Cocker spaniel mix, may tend to flush and ratting around tiny animals and birds. It is a fact that the mix breeds do have genetic health problems. And this mix breed has health issues like eye problems, patellar luxation, Hereditary deafness, reverse sneezing, urolithiasis, hip dysplasia, brachycephalic syndrome, and skin and tail problems. Patellar Luxation In this disease, the kneecap comes out of place than to glide in its groove. This can be hereditary in the French bulldog Cocker spaniel mix. Hip dysplasia Hip dysplasia can be a hereditary problem in the mix breed dog. Eye problems This mixed breed could inherit protruding eyes. They can be prone to glaucoma and cataracts. Primary Seborrhea This problem affects the skin to produce excess scaling and greasiness, leading to inflammation. French bulldogs are not very happy with exercise because of their shortened muzzles and dwarfed limbs. But they do need Low to moderate daily exercise to keep themselves away from obesity. Cocker spaniels do not need challenging exercises too. The mix of these breeds should get 35 to 50 minutes of exercise in a day. Mental and as well as physical activities are necessary to keep them fit. French bulldog or not famous for obedience and intelligence. But they are quick adapters to the situations. At the same time, a Cocker spaniel are working dogs. They are very intelligent and get the rank of 20 out of breeds. So it purely depends upon the parents of this mix breed as to how stubborn or obedient they are going to be. So the mix needs a robust and firm handler. He should not let the dog take advantage of him. This mix breed dog responds well to positive reinforcement. So like people, dogs need praise too for their excellent behavior. Sponsor Meet Max Max is a beautiful Shepherd around years of age who found himself in the shelter after seriously biting someone over a tennis ball. His caregivers at the time where trying to re-home him anyways so they left him at the shelter to be euthanized. Max is a big, stubborn Shepherd who has clearly been allowed to do as he pleases and bully his way through life. He was recently neutered and as his hormones level out he is realizing that structure isn't so bad however Max requires an experienced German Shepherd handler. Max does well in his foster home and has had no issues meeting new volunteers and friends in his foster home. He is a rambunctious boy who likes a good adventure or stirring up the play group by trying to open the gate - anything for a bit of fun! This would make him great for sport work but also makes him terrible if you think taking toys from him is a good idea. Max does wonderful being redirected onto a new toy and is a sucker for a game of two toy fetch. Max is NOT suitable for a home with children under 13 or children who do not understand respecting the boundaries of a high drive dog. Max does well with the other Shepherds in his foster home but doesn't really understand roughhousing or playing. He is a bit more stoic during yard time preferring to keep to himself for the most part. Max will interact with the other dogs but simply doesn't care for playing or doing much with the other dogs. Max has NOT been introduced to any dogs under 40 lbs or cats. To be clear, Max is a wonderful boy in his own regard and is a very smart and eager boy. He is benefiting tremendously from force free training and has some tell-tell habits that speak to a lifetime of negative reinforcement training. If it is your belief that the way to handle a strong willed dog is adverse training this is not the dog - or rescue group - for you. Once a dog has completed in-home training, they can take group classes for more in-depth training - Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky offers both puppy and adult dog group classes. Beginning training in the home also helps owners bond with their dogs so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. Imagine you could come home to a lovable, dedicated, companion for life! If you knew what to look for when buying a German Shepherd puppy, you could find your next best friend. Before you buy your new best friend, read this information so you know what to look for in buying a healthy, quality German Shepherd puppy. I group them into major categories. Will you show him in conformation? Do you want to work with him in Schutzhund or herding? Or do you want a confident and alert companion? Know exactly what you want from your puppy. These dogs are the least costly since they have a trait that prevents them from winning in conformation competitions. These flaws rarely matter to most pet owners. And many minor faults like flat withers or slightly smaller offset ears will probably go unnoticed by most owners. The vast majority of GSDs are family pets. These dogs make great pets as long as they have sound temperaments! They breed some dogs for certain traits that are highly desirable but considered a fault. For example, long-coat or plush-coat GSDs. Show-quality dogs have good temperament and health. You usually buy them for their breed standard qualities that make them able to compete in confirmation or show events. A show-quality dog may cost significantly more if they have the traits desirable to win at a show. This group comes from Championship show lines with a long history of winning. If you plan on showing your Shepherd this is the quality you want. Beware of any breeder who claims they only raise competition-quality dogs. Even the best breeders produce many pet-quality dogs and if a breeder says they only breed perfect dogs, this is a red flag to not buy from them. The GSD is a herding breed, and the working-quality dogs excel at working trials such as scent competitions and Schutzhund. Other work includes climbing and jumping competitions or searching and tracking. They need mental stimulation to keep them occupied and take a lot of time to handle properly. These dogs are better with experienced handlers since you use them for high drive working and competition. They require hours and years of training and preparation for you to have total control during competition. We base this decision on preference. With the correct upbringing and training, both sexes are loyal companions and good with children. They may grow into more dominant dogs, so a confident handler is more desirable. Males may hike their back legs to mark their territory. This can occur on any object — chairs, walls, couches or even your leg. I suggest an extra bout of socialization during this stage, especially with other well-behaved dogs. So they may be better for the first-time owner. Unspayed females come into season every 6 months, so they must receive monitoring and watch to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Their season time can vary from as little as every 4 months to every 9 months. They can attract males to your property and on walks that will harass them if not spayed. Certain breeders and organizations will deal only in a certain coat length and color. The standard coat length is a short coat with double layers. Guard hairs on the top cover a softer underlayer of hair that provides warmth and protection. But there are many coat lengths available depending on your liking. Look online at the different GSD coat lengths to get an idea of what type of fur you want your dog to have. The longer the fur the more grooming involved. The color you choose is a matter of individual taste. Keep in mind the color of many Shepherds alters from their puppyhood to around 2 years of age. Your dog may become lighter or darker. Perhaps they will lose some of their markings as the color fades into the adult pattern. The best way to know what color and patterns your dog grows into is to see the parents of the litter. If the father is unavailable, then ask for photos. Why should you care where your dog comes from if you only want him as a pet companion? You want to get a dog that will live a long and healthy life from a source that has quality puppies. These tips will help you make the best decision on what type of pup fits in your life. Newspaper and Internet Classified Ads Newspaper and internet ads are in abundance. Many backyard breeders hide behind ads online or in local papers. But some breeders who use newspapers and classified ads are reputable and knowledgeable. The problem is you need to visit them to find out, and this can take time to sift through them all. Try the following more reputable suggestions to save yourself time. Dog Care Professionals Ask dog professionals for recommendations. Check with your local veterinarian, groomer, and boarding kennel personnel if they know reputable breeders in town. These professionals are good sources of quality leads. Use the same caution that you will for a classified ad. Verify their suggestions. Many of these organizations regularly receive puppies they need to re-home. While you might not know the full pedigree of the dog, purebred GSDs find themselves in shelters and rescues from no fault of their own. These organizations are a good resource for your first pup. Before adopting, find out as much information as you can. Was the puppy exposed to children? Did he live with other dogs or cats? A well-organized shelter or rescue helps you choose a German Shepherd match for your lifestyle. Start with looking online for GSD rescues and local shelters. Dog Clubs Dog clubs are local and national. These groups put you into contact with registered breeders through their own programs. They can give you the name of the GSD club contact closest to you for breed contacts. Dog clubs also have dog shows open to the public. This is a good time to watch the breed in action and to ask around for quality breeders. While using a dog club to connect you with a reputable breeder is not the only choice, it is one of the more reliable. If you are using a breeder to choose your German Shepherd puppy, this section will help you know the good from the bad. Use these tips to stay safe. Are selling overpriced or under-priced dogs. Lie to you and say you can make money off your new puppy by breeding them, despite them having flaws. Tells you that the GSD is a dog for everyone, with no disadvantages. Breeds multiple types of dogs and claims to be an expert on them all. If a breeder lets their mothers get pregnant more than once a year, this affects the quality of the puppies, so ask how many litters the mother has. These breeders selling unhealthy puppies also will refuse to take bag their dogs if you need to return them for any reason and have no contracts. They have healthy puppies and will answer your questions and have you make multiple visits. Openly show you where the mother and pups spend their time, including their garden or yard. Tells you the up and downs of owning the breed. Have all pedigree and vet paperwork on hand for your review. Specializes in breeding only GSDs source. They openly share this information with you. They have screened their dogs for health issues and can confirm this with documentation which they proudly give you a copy. Healthy mothers are given rest from breeding, and a reputable breeder gives their mothers time off from reproduction. Ask if your breeder if they are willing to take back their dogs if you cannot keep them, as this is standard for a quality breeder with a good reputation. Make sure your breeder has a written contract with detailed information and health guarantees. These are expected for safe breeding practices. Check with local veterinarians' offices, animal shelters, pet supply stores, and other area pet business for referrals to dog rescue organizations in your area. Contact one local dog rescue group for referral to other area groups. Some dog rescue groups work with all dogs, while others are breed-specific. Most rescues groups have established networks with other area rescues. The organization's website also provides links to rescue organizations. Although the majority of dogs looking for new homes through rescue groups are adults, sometimes rescue groups have puppies to place. Most German Shepherds looking for homes through rescue groups do not have papers. If registering your puppy is important, or if you intend to enter it into competitions, you will need its title papers and health records, so a rescued dog may not be right for you. Many dog rescues will require a thorough application process in order to assure that you will be a good fit for the dog. Be prepared to disclose your address and whether you own your home, as well as your employment status and your philosophy when it comes to raising a dog. You will want to make sure that the dog's temperament works well with you and your family. Ask whether you can get the dog checked out by your veterinarian. You will want your vet to check the dog's general health and for serious conditions, such as heart murmurs. Be sure to ask about the dog's health while the rescue has had it and if it is up to date on shots and healthcare. A good rescue should actually offer this information upfront. Get a history of the dog's healthcare up to that point. Has it had its first vaccination, had heart worm treatment, and parasite control? These should have all been done before the age when a puppy is adoptable. While many rescue organizations cannot tell you much about the dogs they place, because the dogs have been rescued off the street or they have been given up anonymously, sometimes they have a bit of information. Get all the information you can about the dog's past so that you can assess their general background and health. Dog rescue organizations are usually run on a shoe-string budget. While they depend mostly on volunteers, they do need funds to transport and care for dogs. Your adoption fee will most likely help to pay for the rescue of other dogs in the future. Degenerative Myelopathy Von Willebrand Disease Perhaps the most well-known is hip dysplasia, a condition that causes the hip joint to develop abnormally. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Generally speaking, however, a once-monthly bath is sufficient for most dogs. German Shepherd Puppies For Sale. Where to Buy a German Shepherd Puppy There are several things you need to keep in mind when searching for your new German Shepherd puppy. Most importantly, you will want to buy from an ethical breeder. An ethical breeder is someone who is knowledgeable about the breed, active in German Shepherd groups, organized with specific questions and answers and is not associated with a puppy mill, which mass produces puppies for profit with no regard for their health and well-being. You will want to avoid at all costs an unethical person, organization, or place. They will say whatever they think you want to hear in order to convince you to buy from them, even if it is untrue or exaggerated. It may be hard to turn away from a puppy if you have already started dealing with a seller whom you realize is unethical. But keep in mind that any purchase from an unethical seller only encourages that person. Signs of an Ethical Breeder So, what exactly should you look for when you set out to vet a breeder? They try to match your personality: Reputable breeders care that their puppies are placed in the best homes for them. They want you to spay or neuter: Ethical breeders are very careful when they choose two parents to breed a litter. In order to ensure the continued health of the breed, as well as of the puppy itself some otherwise healthy dogs might have genetic traits that make breeding unwise or dangerous , they will ask that you agree to have the puppy neutered or spayed. They ask you to sign a contract: This contract may include a guarantee against health problems, as well as a clause that stipulates you need to notify the breeder if you find yourself unable to care for your dog any longer, among other things. They are lifelong learners: They are knowledgeable about diseases and genetic problems affecting German Shepherds, such as elbow and hip dysplasia. They keep themselves up-to-date on the latest information and treatments. There are also several things an ethical breeder might give you. These may include: Health documents: Many reputable breeders will have screened their puppies for elbow and hip trouble prior to selling. Registration papers: Ethical breeders will have already registered with, or else will provide you with an application to register with, The American Kennel Club. Eating schedule: How much food has the breeder been feeding their puppies? When do they feed the puppies, and what type of food do they use? A trustworthy breeder will be able to provide you with an eating schedule so that you can continue this important routine for your puppy uninterrupted. Signs of an Unethical Breeder On the other hand, an unethical breeder may: Be ignorant: They might know very little about the history of the German Shepherd breed. More importantly, they might be ignorant of ailments and genetic defects common to German Shepherds. They might deny that German Shepherds are prone to any afflictions at all, which is not true. Be uninvolved: Is your breeder a member of any dog clubs or associations? Are they active in any canine sports? Anyone who does not love the dogs they breed or sell should be avoided. Be evasive: Will your breeder let you see the puppies? Be disinterested in you: A reputable breeder will ask you lots of questions before agreeing to any sale see below. They may also be expecting many questions from you. The best thing to do is to weed out such unconscientious people as soon as possible. If you know what to look out for, you might save yourself time and headaches. Be wary of any ads that: Cite American Kennel Club registration as a bonus: Reputable breeders will provide you with AKC papers or an application automatically. There is nothing special about a breeder who touts themself as having AKC-registered pups. That is only what they should have. Anyone who boasts of AKC registration may be trying to prey on ignorant buyers who are impressed by the mention of an official-sounding organization. Extra large! Best to stay away altogether. Tell you that you can meet both of the parents: This one is a little tricky, but worth mentioning. It is unlikely that a breeder will have both the perfect sire and the perfect dam in their own kennels. There might be an understandable explanation, however. If nothing else in the ad alarms you, it might be worth contacting the breeder and asking. If you receive them, move on. How to Find an Ethical Breeder Now you know the signs and what to avoid, but where do you begin to look for the right seller? Start with whom you know: Reaching out to trusted members of your own network is one of the best places to begin. Talk to dog-owning members of your circle to learn how they found their pups and ask if they have any advice. Even if they themselves are not German Shepherd owners, they might have helpful tips or know someone who does. Cold-calling a veterinarian who has not been recommended is not a good idea, but a vet trusted by someone close to you is more likely to be reputable and may know ethical breeders. Visit a dog show: Many conscientious breeders raise German Shepherds who become show dogs. If a dog is a show dog, odds are, its owner takes good care of it. After all, these dogs are being judged as the best-of-the-best. Attending a dog show as an audience member will give you the opportunity to see for yourself how the breeder interacts with their dog. You can get a feel for how they treat their animals before making contact. Filter by state and then scroll until you find one who breeds German Shepherds. Places to Avoid It may go without saying, but Craigslist should not be part of your search. Unfortunately, many puppies listed on the site are part of puppy mills, which you should never, ever support with your money. The same holds true for pet stores. Finally, stay away from any websites that offer to ship you a dog inexpensively. The next step is getting to know this person and their German Shepherds better, so you can take home the perfect pup for you. When you meet a breeder, you will want to ask them: Have You Tested the Puppy? As noted above, many reputable breeders will have screened their puppies for elbow and hip dysplasia and should be able to provide you with a report from the OFA, SV, or PennHIP. The only way to know for certain that a puppy is healthy is to have it tested. A puppy will need a few rounds of shots, but it should have had its first round before it goes home with you. A German Shepherd puppy should have specific vaccinations by a certain age. Weight: pounds Life Span: years Yes we are, paws down, the most incredible dogs ever! Let others know how great we are. In addition, German Shepherds are highly adaptable, easily trainable and serve as natural protectors. Excelling in canine sports, they are perfect for families with children or singles and couples leading active lives out of doors. German Shepherds are dogs of action and will thrive alongside a smart, active owner who lavishes a Shepherd with focused attention, exercise, training and one-on-one time. Consider starting with a half-hour walk twice per day plus a vigorous play or training session. Include vigorous games of Frisbee, long runs and an occasional swim. Provided its exercise needs are met, the German Shepherd can make his dwelling in a small city apartment or a sprawling ranch. Be patient and consistent. If possible, get your puppy into kindergarten classes by ten to twelve weeks and socialize, socialize, socialize your little companion. Begin training at home by socializing your puppy to family and friends. German Shepherds are for no novice dog owner. Utilize daily training to keep these working dogs busy as well as participation in dog sports including agility, obedience, rally and tracking. Remember a bored German Shepherd is soon a destructive Shepherd. Provide your Shepherd with the attention, activity and training it needs or be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. As English Bulldog Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes them unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities and produce high quality English Bulldogs for sale. Be extremely conscious and precise while feeding your Bulldog. While your pet may not refuse to more food, it is your responsibility to keep its diet under control. This is a reality and you should be aware of the same before getting yourself a Bulldog. English Bulldogs can get really messy with all the drooling and slobbering. It is never a good idea to cuddle your Bulldog before attending a special event wearing immaculate clothes! Over time, most Bulldog parents get habituated to the sounds their pets make all day long. While other members of your family sleeping farther away from your furry friend may not notice them, the sounds can make it a little difficult for you to sleep at night. Overheating Issues English Bulldogs often find it difficult to regulate their body temperatures. In most cases, this makes it difficult for your pet to cool down after indulging in some physical activity. It is common for English Bulldog parents to see their pets start panting even after light physical activities. Make sure you are aware of such tendencies before bringing a Bulldog home. Still, it is important to feed your pet a diet rich in proteins, fats, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. As an English Bulldog parent, do not feed your pet anything more than what is absolutely needed as it can get obese in no time. Between 2 And 6 Months As your English Bulldog gets older, you can have a definite structure to its dietary routine. Keep track of what your Bulldog eats and refrain it from over-eating as it may lead to obesity and other related health complications. Above 6 Months Once your Bulldog crosses the six-month threshold, you can reduce its food intake to not more than two meals per day. An adult English Bulldog is much more likely to get obese if you do not pay keen attention to its daily diet. Major Health Problems For English Bulldog Before bringing an English Bulldog home, make sure you know the different health issues it can encounter throughout its life. Make regular vet visits to ensure that your Bulldog leads a long, healthy, and happy life. This leads to the formation of a red and swollen appearance in the corner of its eye, making it look like a cherry. The complication can make your English Bulldog uncomfortable and its eyes red. Suitable ointments or eye drops can help your pet deal with a dry eye. This leads to excessive tearing, irritation, and discomfort. Severe entropion can lead to serious corneal damage. Reverse Sneezing Reverse or inverted sneezing is another common health complication for an English Bulldog. If you notice reverse sneezing in your Bulldog, you can comfort it by massaging its throat and distracting it until the problem subsides. It often leads to lameness and pain that does not go away easily. While a Bulldog can lead a normal life with hip dysplasia, it should not be bred further to avoid passing it down to its puppies. If the head shakes are not related to either of the two causes and do not stop for too long, visit a vet immediately. Brachycephalic Syndrome Characterized by obstructed airways, this condition is common in Bulldogs due to their narrow nostrils and short heads. Brachycephalic Syndrome leads to noisy breathing, especially when your English Bulldog exercises. If not looked into, it can get severe and cause respiratory distress.
