Everywhere I go people go bananas over him and want to pet him and play with him. He is so playful and friendly. He is already almost housebroken his crate stays dry and he sleeps all night. He gets along beautifully with my other 2 dogs and is very intelligent. So far he sits on command, does great on the leash and is great in the car. The adult dogs were all beautiful and obviously very well cared for and loved. I was so excited when I pulled up and saw the adults and then thrilled when I saw my adorable pup sitting there smiling at me. He ran straight to me when I opened my car door and I fell in love instantly! My teenage son and husband adore him! Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Tue 25 Jul .The records paint a picture of a strong, growing dog increasingly out of control, including one episode when the first lady, Jill Biden , could not prevent him charging at an officer. According to the group , Commander, aged almost two, broke protocol at least 10 times in a five-month period, including three serious incidents that took place in the space of just a few weeks. Commander might be even more badly behaved than the records show. Judicial Watch points out that only the timeframe from September until January is covered by its request, and his first nine months at the White House, and the most recent six months, are excluded. Email exchanges between Secret Service agents and their managers reveal their disdain for Commander, whom the Bidens introduced in December in a video showing the president tossing a ball to him. Freaking clown needs a muzzle. Barely three weeks later, the situation had become more critical. A series of other biting incidents by Commander, some requiring medical treatment, were reported through November and December .According to Judicial Watch, the dog showed a pattern of aggression in which it would chase people as they walked then leap to bite them. The White House said the Bidens will provide more training and improved control techniques for Commander. Ten alleged attacks by Mr. Biden's German Shepherd, named Commander , were detailed in redacted pages of Secret Service emails, text messages and workers' compensation filings obtained by the conservative group Judicial Watch through a request under the Freedom of Information Act. The attacks took place over an approximately four-month period between October of and January of .None of the injuries described in the documents were serious. The officer said that the first lady "couldn't regain control of Commander and he continued to circle me. The officer in question was treated at the scene by White House medical staff, and was then taken to a hospital for further treatment, according to the documents. In a Dec. Biden, after the dog was taken off his leash, the emails show. The officer said they received treatment from White House medical personnel and was able to finish their shift. Biden "was present and convened in the very quick interaction of Commander and seemed concerned about" the agent, according to an unnamed assistant special agent in charge, who described the injured agent as remaining "professional, calm" and showing "a mature demeanor during and after in the incident. In an attack on Jan. The officer said they did not require medical attention. Commander was gifted to the Bidens as a puppy in December of following the death of their their German Shepherd "Champ" earlier that year. In , Biden's other German Shepherd, Major, was also involved in several similar biting incidents. In a statement provided to CBS News on Tuesday, Elizabeth Alexander, a spokesperson for the first lady, said that the White House has been "partnering with the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff on additional leashing protocols and training, as well as establishing designated areas for Commander to run and exercise. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a separate statement that "for the past several presidential administrations, the Secret Services has navigated how to best operate around family pets and these incidents are no exception. We — and our dogs — enjoy daily exercise and training to keep them in good mental and physical shape. However, showing and breeding the dogs is not our main business, but rather a professional hobby. We owned Rottweilers before we fell in love with Frenchies. We no longer have Rotties, as Frenchies are now our primary breed. We started with just one Frenchie, but as the saying goes, you can not just have one, or two, or three… and we love each and every one of our sweet little Frenchies! Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do and the time is always right to do what is right. Having a French Bulldog will bring infinite joy and laughter to your life almost everyday. Frenchie owners will agree there are countless ways their little faces and attitudes brighten up your life, sometimes in unexpected ways. All French Bulldogs are loving companions that require significant human interaction to thrive, so be prepared, this is not a set and forget dog. They NEED to be one of the family and should not regularly be left alone for long periods. Frenchies are perfect for small living spaces but they need to be temperature controlled i. In the winter months they should not be left out in the cold for long so …. French Bulldogs are great security guards and will alert you to strangers. The incessant non-stop barking for zero reason you see in some small breeds is rare for a Frenchie, this makes for a lot less complaints from any nosey neighbours especially in condos or apartments. For example, a well exercised pup tends to be a non shoe chewing pup which can be quite a valuable trait according to where you shop lol. From the moment they open their eyes Frenchies have very identifiable personalities, each with their own quirks and expressions that develop well into their adult lives. This can be said of most dogs, but the French Bulldog is a unique experience and once you share your life with one you will know this to be true. They love to play and roughhouse when they are feeling frisky, but are also more than willing companions to cuddle under a blanket on the sofa and binge watch your favorite Netflix series. Frenchies are freethinking, and intelligent but can be little rebels. Which one would think could be frustrating but it actually adds to their lovable personalities. Once these pint sized pups dig their heels in… a mountain is easier to move, so always keep training sessions on the short and fun side. Be firm, consistent and generous in your rewards and both of you will find the experience more than worthwhile. Male French Bulldogs average between lbs and inches tall. Female French Bulldogs are generally slightly more petite at lbs and range from inches. A short, smooth and easy to care for coat with an assortment of standard and rare colours to choose from the French Bulldog can be a showstopper and illicit everything from smiles to inquiries about where you were able to find such a unique looking dog. It is a heavy shedder, making it hard for owners to clean up while trying to keep their coat healthy. The German Shepherd Border Collie mix sheds more often as it grows old, so owners must brush its fur daily to remove dander and dead hair. Here are some of the most recommended grooming equipment to maintain the coat of the German Shepherd mixed with Border Collie: Slicker Brush Slicker brushes are great combs to remove tangles and mats on long-haired dogs. The slicker brush can save owners time when brushing the coat of the German Shepherd Border Collie compared to regular combs. Detanglers Before using a slicker brush, owners will notice that the Border Collie German Shepherd mix has a lot of tangled hair. Dematting sprays can relax and soften the hair to make it easier for owners to untangle the knots. Owners must resort to this solution if the tangles are hard to remove despite the use of detanglers as dogs are not fond of sharp objects. Owners must avoid buying shampoo based on the odor or the low price. Owners must be aware of its coat type and skin to help them find oils and specialty ingredients that will be beneficial for the Border Collie mixed with German Shepherd. Grooming Wipes The German Shepherd mixed with Border Collie is an energetic dog that will be dirty when it finishes playing outside the house. Wet wipes are essential for dog owners that want to prevent mud and grass inside their residence. Microfiber Towel Human towels do not absorb all of the water on a dog. Because of its heavy coat, the German Shepherd Border Collie mix will likely be dripping wet despite a heavy rinsing. Microfiber towels can help remove water on a Border Collie German Shepherd cross better than human towels. The legs and hips of Border Collie German Shepherd will deteriorate as it ages. The hybrid dog will experience problems at an earlier rate depending on its activities as well. It may also be born deaf if one of its parent breeds already have hearing problems. Epilepsy The Border Collie breed is widely known for its tendency to suffer from epilepsy more than other dog breeds. The Border Collie German Shepherd mix may inherit this health problem as well. Epilepsy happens when the dog is experiencing episodic seizures. Fortunately, it is a rare disease among dogs. Degenerative Myelopathy When owners notice that the Border Collie German Shepherd mix is starting to walk funny on its back legs, it can be a symptom of Degenerative Myelopathy. This disease currently has no cure. Irresponsible breeders are the most likely reasons for the health issues of a German Shepherd mixed with a Border Collie. Owners must make sure that they are adopting a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder to avoid dealing with a sickly puppy. If the hybrid dog is exhausted from more training than usual, owners can go for 4 cups a day. Bloat and diabetes are two main health problems that can affect a Border Collie crossed with a German Shepherd as both parent breeds may also suffer from them. It is essential for owners to avoid overfeeding this hybrid dog and prevent nutritional imbalances. Over the years I learned so much and gained a lot of experience that has helped me excel as a breeder. While I was attending college, I ended up meeting my husband. He also shared my passion in dogs. She was my dream come true and truly encouraged me to be the breeder I am today. I fell in love with a dark female puppy from the litter. Over time and seeing so many families pleased with our puppies we wanted to grow. We felt that a large property was a must for our dogs to exercise and play. We ended up selling our first home and purchasing the house where we reside now. Technically our mailing address is in Greenville however we are in fact in South Westerlo within the hills of Albany county. Both of our families are from the area, so the transition was very supportive and the location is very easy to travel from or to the New York State Thruway or from Interstate I.Soon after our move we have spent so much time with creating the best environment and care for our dogs. Throughout the year we get visited by the state and AKC to verify our dogs are in the best care possible. Everything was thought of during this build. The building consists of two floors. Fans are optional throughout the entire interior. We have additional propane heaters that will work with no electricity. The floors have built in drainage and are covered in grippy flecked epoxy. Our dogs have constant access to water and have comfortable Kuranda beds to lay on. We have designated areas for our older puppies after mom is done nursing them. These areas consist of very nice over-sized play areas. The walls are made out of washable white plastic, and we use g-flooring with fresh wood chips for the bedding. The puppies have plenty of toys and their own Kuranda bed s that they love to lay on or hide below it. Our outside run area consists of a fully covered roof, so our dogs are protected from the elements, with lighting and fans. The play area has over feet of beautiful black chain link fencing. The large play area also offers a doggy playground area where they have plenty of toys to tug and pull on. About our Dogs: We strive to provide the best and healthiest lines of Golden Retrievers. We spend endless hours in search and communication with multiple breeders from all over the United States. Checking pedigrees and clearances prior to committing with a new line. We have made some amazing relationships with some of the best breeders, all of which share the same common goal of breeding healthy AKC Golden Retrievers. We raise and train all of our puppies within our home. We work with commands, potty training, and socialization on many different platforms and various environments. Early on we are verifying their personality and traits are conclusive with a possible prospect for future breeding. As time goes on, we decide if they are a good candidate or not for breeding. If they are a good candidate additional health testing is scheduled per their age. We conduct several medical tests to verify healthy lines prior to breeding. The health tests set us apart from most breeders that claim their dogs are healthy per a veterinarian check or that claim that they conduct DNA genetic health testing but nothing else. One of the first health tests that we conduct and one of the most important tests on all our dogs, is DNA genetic testing. We have used Animal Genetics in the past but have been shifting towards using Embark. This test allows us to verify we have the best pairing of parents prior to breeding and that we are not passing on bad genes that could be avoidable issues in the future. After our dogs turn 1, they proceed to get OFA testing of their eyes and heart. A specialist either looks at their eyes or heart to verify they have no health conditions that could be passed to their offspring. If we are lucky enough that our young golden passes, we will move forward to the next health testing stage. The next health test that we typically conduct once our young golden is 1. While they are sedated to have these x-rays we usually also have Penn Hip testing done. Also, per our vet the Penn Hip is a better test to know the overall health of the hips as they test the elasticity and movement rather then judging based on an image. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. Under each dog there is a link from K9 data. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. We are constantly conducting health tests and updating K9 data as well as the webpage. Lots of factors could play into why a dog could fail their OFA elbows or hip tests. It may not necessarily be genetic but instead could be from the environment that they are raised in. Limiting their jumping heights is extremely important. Simply slipping on ice can cause unforeseen affects to their overall development. It is also highly recommended for additional joint supplements as they grow, we prefer the use of NuVet supplements see link on website tab for further information on NuVet products. Lack of vitamin C in their food is another considered attribute to not having passing scores. All of these factors are highly overseen during the raising of our potential breeding dogs. Unfortunately, sometimes our dogs do not pass all of their tests. We sometimes keep them, but we also have found amazing homes for them. We are even more particular in their home placement as we know their personalities and what would be the best fit. They will be spayed prior or be contracted to be spayed soon after being placed in their new homes. We are very focused on ensuring we know our breeding stock through both their individual health and their genealogy testing. Our dogs and puppies get a lot of socializing. Daily they are engaged with our other dogs, our young sons, our friends, and other family members. They all get a ton of love and attention. This ensures they keep up on their house manners and it also makes it incredibly easier when pregnant moms deliver within our home. Our dogs are not kept outdoors like you might see with other breeders. We also have them go into large fenced in play areas where they play in large groups with each other. We do not show our dogs or conduct any competitions with them. When I am not raising my children, I am constantly spending time with my dogs or interacting with potential customers. My husband works many hours in his law enforcement career to dedicate any additional time in competitions, trials, or shows. Once he retires and the children are older, we may pursue that however it is not our current focus. Some of the lighter goldens that we have also known as English Creams do have championship titles in their bloodlines as does our darker red field goldens. Any of our puppies with proper training could and would be amazing for shows or hunting trials as its in their bloodline. About our Puppies: I usually make the determination of puppies after 30 days of a breeding. I have my own ultrasound machine and can get a good determination of how many puppies are present. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. We begin the deworming process and also begin the first vaccine. We do not travel with the puppies to an animal hospital. I feel it could be stressful for the puppies and creates an opportunity for the puppies to be exposed to other pet sicknesses. I have a traveling vet come and conduct full physicals on all of the puppies. You will receive a copy of her report in the puppy folder upon pickup date. We have outside play areas and toys for them to interact with. They will also be played with by children and handled by adults. They will have several toys to interact with. Obstacles will be in there play pens to learn jumping and crawling. Process Purchasing a Puppy: If you decide that you would like to move forward with getting a puppy, we recommend that you first look at the females and the males that we have. Sometimes the males could change if multiple females come into heat at the same time. We also have an additional tab where you can view planned future breeding so you can have a better idea of potential pairings. Next, I would like to have a phone interview so we can find out more about yourself and the home that a puppy of mine would be going to. In our discussion I would like to know which mother you were leaning towards and whether you prefer a male or female puppy. I can go over all additional questions that you may have including total costs. If both parties are fully satisfied, I will move forward with sending you over the contract. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. We highly recommend slowly changing the food over time if you decide to change it as they have extremely sensitive stomachs at this age. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Why is Uptown Puppies different from other places? We love animals and take it for granted that all puppies should be raised with love but unfortunately, many breeders care more about their profit than about animal health and welfare. What is a puppy mill? Most puppies bought in store and online come from mills, overcrowded breeding factories that have no regard for animal welfare. The main concern of puppy mill owners is to maximize profit so dogs live in terrible conditions and never leave their wire cages. Answer the questions to tell us all about you and your ideal puppy. The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article. Do every chore you need to do before your pug arrives. Feeding a Poodle Overview Ensuring that your Poodle is on a well-balanced diet is one of the most important elements to keeping your canine family member healthy, both now and into the future. This section will cover all Poodle feeding guidelines including how often to feed a Poodle, serving sizes, dry vs wet, grain vs grain-free, and top recommended kibble. Don't need all of the details and just want to know which brands are recommended? New Puppies - The Importance of Gradually Switching Foods Before you even bring your Poodle home, it is very important to discuss with the breeder or shelter worker if you are adopting a rescue exactly which brand of food they have been feeding to your Poodle. A fast change in food can cause upset stomach and digestive problems. Breeders and shelters are buying food in bulk and have to feed many dogs which is a factor in which brand they choose; so there is a good chance that you will want to offer your Poodle something different. Have both the current food and the new food on hand and make a gradual switch over the course of 3 weeks. Though you will be leaving food out at all times, it is important that the food is fresh. Do not just top it off throughout the day, rinse and clean the bowl as necessary so that old food is not stuck at the bottom of the dish. Puppy: Starting at just about the 3 month mark, Poodles of all varieties should be eating 3 meals per day, plus snacks. Adult: When a pup matures into an adult, this does not necessarily mean that they should suddenly be given only one meal a day. Smaller dogs such as Toy Poodles and Miniatures often do best with 2 or even 3 meals per day. Standards have a bit more tolerance to a single dinnertime feeding, however many can also benefit from having food split up into two servings. Several snacks can be given in between meals and this is particularly helpful is a Poodle is a fast eater. How Much to Feed a Poodle Exact serving size varies quite a bit depending on the type of food. There is a big difference in calories between wet vs dry and low quality vs high quality. And, the amount of food that a Poodle should be eating depends on the dog's age, activity level, individual metabolism, and health status. Even the weather can play a role since dogs tend to eat a bit more in the winter and a bit less in the summer. In regard to calorie requirements, puppies need more calories per pound than their adult counterparts, approximately 40 to 55 calories per pound, daily, compared to adult dogs that need about 35 to 45 calories per pound, daily. S enior Poodles typically have slower metabolisms and reduced mobility and therefore usually require slightly fewer calories, in the 40 calorie per pound range. If you are feeding your Poodle a commercial food, follow the suggested feeding guidelines. These are usually pretty spot-on. Since these are based on both age and weight, do not estimate how much your Poodle weighs but rather know what this is within a pound or two. If you are feeding your Poodle homemade food, a rough guideline for serving size is 1 ounce of food for each 1 pound of body weight, daily. As you can imagine, this can vary quite a bit depending on the exact ingredients. Using the 1 to 1 rule as a starting point, what your Poodle consumes within 15 minutes is usually a good amount for each meal. Wet vs Dry If a Poodle had their way, most would opt for wet food. However, dry food is recommended since this is much better for the gums and teeth. In addition, dry kibble tends to be easier on the stomach and intestines and a diet of all wet canned food can lead to runny stools. Grain vs Grain-free Until relatively recently, there was not much debate on this subject; if a dog tended to have gastrointestinal or allergy issues when on a diet with grains, they were switched to a grain-free recipe. However, this changed when it was discovered that several dogs that were breeds not prone to dilated cardiomyopathy developed that particular heart disease and also happened to be fed grain-free kibble. Lots of pet parents immediately thought that they needed to change their dogs back to grains; however, many more studies need to be done. In fact, the most recent update from the Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University suggests that 'grain-free' alone may not be the issue at play. For now, it is theorized that a certain diet dubbed a BEG diet may be to blame. This stands for boutique small local brands with exotic meats non-traditional meats like alligator, bison, ostrich, venison, and kangaroo and grain-free along with peas, legumes, or potatoes as one of the top 5 ingredients. Currently there are no recalls of grain-free dog food brands and the FDA is still investigating any possible links including the BEG theory. If your Poodle does not do well with any grains at all, you may wish to stick to a brand that has traditional meats like chicken, turkey, or beef or a fish-based recipes. And, if you are not sure about which grains your Poodle may do okay with, you may wish to opt for wholesome non-wheat and non-gluten grains like rice brown or white , oatmeal, quinoa which is technically a seed. Exact recommendations for the best foods include both grain and grain-free options. More active puppies may need upwards of 60 calories. On the other side of the spectrum, lazier pups will need about .You can use this general guideline to figure out how much food your puppy will need at various stages of development. If not, you may have to soften the kibble a bit to get them to eat or start with wet food. Compared to their birth weight, Poodles will be surprisingly large for only being a few months of age. Toy Poodles The average weight of a Toy Poodle at three months is about two and a half pounds. Miniature Poodles Miniature Poodles typically weigh about five pounds at this age and need approximately calories to stay healthy. Standard Poodles Standard Poodles are well on their weight to reaching adulthood at three months. They should already weight about 20 pounds. This equates to over 1, calories every day. You should continue to monitor their growth and adjust their diets as needed. Toy Poodles Toy Poodles almost double their weight by this age. They typically weigh in at just under five pounds, thus requiring about calories. Miniature Poodles By six months old, most Miniature Poodles tip the scales at about 9 pounds. Standard Poodles At around 35 to 39 pounds, Standard Poodles will do well with just over 2, calories of food. One Year of Age Take out the birthday candles and some dog-friendly cake! This is a great time to look back on your previous weigh-ins to see how much your puppy has changed. Your Poodle should be close to their target adult weight. They will continue to grow a bit longer, especially Standard Poodles. However, the changes will be a bit more difficult to see. Toy Poodles While it may not seem like much growth, Toy Poodles have come a long way since birth. Your tiny canine companion should weigh in at about six pounds and require about calories of food each day. Miniature Poodles Miniature Poodles have an average weight of about 13 pounds when they are one year old. As a result, you should be feeding them just under calories. Standard Poodles At a year old, your Standard Poodle is probably too big to be a lapdog anymore. Most puppies weigh about 50 pounds. They will need between 2, and 2, calories each day. Young Poodles need to eat many times throughout the day. When their suckling off their mothers, puppies typically free feed. Your dog will have the urge to eat a lot as a result. From there, you need to slowly decrease their meal frequency. When you hit the six-month mark, go down to three meals. At one year old, you should try to work your way down to two meals. Your puppy may not like this very much. If they seem to have a problem with hunger throughout the day, you can continue to feed them three meals for another few months. The time to switch your puppy to adult food will depend on a couple of factors. Some dogs take a bit longer to reach their adult weight than others. They need continued support as they make that last push to adulthood. Switching too early can do more harm than good. This is because they are considered adults at about one year old. The other two classifications continue to grow, albeit slowly, until about a year and a half. Their digestive system is still quite sensitive to changes. You can ease the transition by introducing small amounts of adult food to their puppy formula. Dry food and wet food both have their advantages. Starting off with canned food gives your puppy the opportunity to develop stronger muscles before they move onto something tough. It should be noted that wet food is usually less dense than kibble. To avoid weight gain, you should move onto dry kibble when your puppy is about six months old. Here are some great recipes for young Poodle pups. The food comes in a mash form. If you are not yet aware you will understand some of the differences between working lines German Shepherd and show lines. To fully understand, it is necessary to first look at an overview of the history of the German Shepherd lines. When did the German Shepherd Lines began? It was during s that breeding of dogs were standardized in Germany. The main purpose was to produce dogs in assisting the shepherds in protecting their flock from predators. Throughout this period, there was also contentions of belief about whether bred dogs should be used for display of appearance only or should be for working functions as well. Until such time when a German captain and a former student of veterinary science, Max von Stephanitz, who strongly believed in standardizing dog breeding to produce working dogs, advocated such idea. His advocacy started after watching a show and was amazed with the performance and ability of a dog, Hektor Linksrhein, and eventually after buying it, he changed its name to Horand von Grafrath who was known to be the first German Shepherd Dog. Since then, the breeding of working lines German Shepherd became popular. His work became internationally acceptable and are being used until now. How did the German Shepherd Lines evolved? The results were successful when out of Horand came Schwaben and Beowulf which became the origin of the present German Shepherd work lines. In , German Shepherd Dog became more popular in America when its first exposure happened there. It was in America, where GSD shows became more famous because of this new breed. The development of the cross-breeding process of working line GSD greatly improved during the Second World War in order to help both the Axis Powers and Forces for both military and paramilitary activities. After the war, both America and Germany became highly strict in breeding and training program of the German Shepherd working lines. Presently, the breeding program of German Shepherd lines can be either for working purpose or for show or domestic purpose which will be the difference between Working Lines German Shepherd and Show Lines? To clearly distinguish these German Shepherd lines, it is better to look at their differences in purpose, physical and personality. Purpose Difference Basically, working lines German Shepherds are bred and trained to work especially in law enforcement and military functions. On the other hand, show lines German Shepherds are being raised primarily to produce well-structured and good appearing breed of GSD. These lines are actually intended for dog shows and of course to be pet dogs at home. Physical Difference Working German Shepherds have thicker and a straight body structure so they can work harder for long hours. While show lines German Shepherds are thinner with slanted back because their back legs are shorter than their legs in front. Unlike the working lines GSD, legs in back are longer than front. Working lines German Shepherds are preferred to have medium length double coat for better tolerance to differing climates. However, there are standards for show lines where color is a requirement such as strong rich colors like black, black and red, gray, black and tan, blue, or black and silver. Working line German Shepherds are preferred to be sable or black in military and police work. Sable German Shepherd Dogs are being bred by top working line German Shepherd breeders in the world with occasional black coats as well. Personality Difference Working lines GSD are more energetic and are sensitive to any fast-moving persons or animals because they assumed it to be a prey. They also use their mouth to experience the world rather than their paws. This energy is an effect of the severe training exposures they've been breed from. The training requires more special exercises that will develop its physical strength and intelligence in order to be prepared in hazardous field of work. German Shepherd Show Lines are calm and more tamed but still require cautions because they can be dangerous when improperly handled. However, their aggressiveness are usually expressed when there is situation that they need to defend themselves. Breed Types of Working and Show Lines German Shepherd For those who are planning to have a German Shepherd Dog, it is not enough that you know about their types of functions but it is also essential to be oriented about the major types of breeds of German Shepherd Lines. Below are some of the famous breed types of German Shepherd working and show lines. They have straight body structure, darker color, and big bones. They are more energetic and need to be involved in many activities for them to maintain good health. Most are trained by European working line German Shepherd breeders. West German Shepherd West German Shepherds are being bred for show purposes rather than for working functions. They are very popular when it comes to show lines GSD breed. They have a more sloped appearance compared to East German Shepherds. There is also a working line West German Shepherd which is considered to be closer to the breed of dog bred by Stephanitz. This West German Shepherd is excellent both in working tasks and even as a family pet. They are assigned to become protectors of territory and are being bred from the East German Shepherd lines. This kind of breed also undergoes intensive training to enhance health and muscle strength to be fit in military exercises. It is as well characterized by its dark color, strong nerves, intelligence and loyalty. Although both have differences in purpose, physical attributes, and personality, owners and breeders should be very careful in handling them to ensure safety whether they are at workplace or at home. The breed originated in Germany in , and was bred to herd and guard sheep. Created to work, the German shepherd is intelligent, strong, and athletic. It was intended to be a medium size dog but due to breeding, seeing both medium and large sized dogs is common. The breed standard is 60 — 90 pounds for males and 50 — 75 pounds for females. Since German shepherds are so intelligent, they are notably easy to train and enjoy an active lifestyle. They do well at both work and in active family homes. They are often seen working alongside law enforcement and the military. They excel in protection, drug and explosives detection, search and rescue, and as service dogs. They also enjoy training, obedience, dog sports, and hanging out with their owners. They have tons of energy and as family pets, love to play, run, hike, go on walks, do jobs around the house, and protect their families. German shepherds have also been known as Alastians. During the world war, they began calling them the Alsatian, after the German French border area of Alsace-Lorraine. In , breeders campaigned to change the name of the breed back to German Shepherd Dog. Today, there are two common lines of German shepherd dogs — the working line and the show line. All German shepherds originated from the original German line but over the years have developed into two distinct types of dogs differing in appearance and temperament due to breeding. Physical Appearance The working line has a straight back, compact body, and powerful muscles and is built for stamina and endurance. Temperament The working line is very high energy, high drive, fearless, has a strong work ethic, extremely intelligent, confident in all they do, and have nerves of steel so they do not back down to threats. The show line is lower energy, less intense, very smart, and friendlier. Coats The coat of the working line is often seen in sable and their coats are shorter and coarse, although there are long coat working line German shepherds. The show line is most often seen in the classic tan and black or red and black saddle or blanket. Health The working line German shepherd is more rugged and typically healthier and less prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. The show line is bred for appearance and more prone to hip and elbow problems due to their sloped backs and shorter hind legs. As Family Pets Working line German shepherds are very loyal and make devoted family pets when their mental and physical needs can be met. They are loving and companionable but are very high energy and require lots of exercise, training, socialization, and must be able to expend their abundance of energy in positive outlets. They usually require experienced working dog handlers. The show line German shepherd is a much calmer and a more easy-going family pet. They are loving and loyal dogs that are very smart and highly trainable. They also require plenty of exercise and lots of mental stimulation to thrive. Protective Working line German shepherds have an incredible work ethic, are very alert, vigilant, and that means they have a strong desire to protect their family and they consider that part of their job. Show line German shepherds are naturally protective yet calmer, which can make them less intense and easier to handle. The show line German shepherds come in the American show line, Canadian show line, and West German show line. Summary Knowing which German shepherd is right for your family includes understanding the breed. Since German shepherds are so energetic, smart, and loyal, they need to be included in family activities and do best when close to their owners. When left to their own devices, they can easily become anxious and destructive. There is no more loyal, smart, and companionable dog than the German shepherd and when bringing one home, by taking the time to understand the line as well as their heritage will help you choose your new best friend wisely. Please feel free to share this helpful article with your friends. There is a vast difference between the two. Below I will explain some of the differences between the German Show lines, American Show lines and the European Working lines and I will show you a picture of all three. The captain wished to create a single breed that could serve instead of the several different highly specialized breeds farmers were using to work their flocks of sheep. He dreamt of a single, multi-purposed dog that could herd sheep, protect boundaries, defend against predators, protect the shepherd, his property and his family and still lie down in the house to play with the children at the end of the day. He set out with determination to select the best dogs exhibiting the desired traits and started building his breeding program. He was a very methodical man with a plan, and he produced some very detailed documents to guide breeders in their efforts. The standard and breed worthiness requirements are recognized internationally and most countries in the world abide by the German standards. So basically, the German shepherd dogs we find worldwide are pretty much the same and compete side by side in local shows and at the World Sieger Show in Germany once a year. There are two major different types of German Shepherds in the World Standard: The Working lines and the Show lines The information below was used with permission from the author, Jackie Athon and any reprint must list her as author at www. The working lines are usually smaller, have very little angulation, are usually only KKL2 permitted to breed, but not recommended to breed. All German Shepherds in Germany must get Schutzhund titles before they are permitted to breed, so obviously both types can do the work, but not necessarily with the same amount of intensity. Working lines are usually bred to have a very high pain tolerance. This means they do not respond very much to pain. It also means he will not respond to normal corrections and requires much harder discipline to get the dog to obey you. Working dogs have more 'hair trigger' aggression, and generally a higher Prey drive. Because of this, they must be monitored carefully around people, especially children. Anything that moves fast becomes Prey like a rabbit to be chased down and caught. If a jogger runs by, or a child zips by running, or is on a bicycle or on skates, the Working dog may react to them as if they are Prey. They can't grab with their paws, so they use their mouth to grab bite to stop their Prey. So what is best for you will depend on how you intend to live with your dog kennel dog or house companion , how experienced of a dog handler you are with aggressive dogs, and how far you want to go in SchH competition. With the higher pain tolerance, the higher aggression and higher Prey drive, you had better know what you are doing and how to handle the dog in a safe manner if you want a working line shepherd. If you intend to compete in SchH 3 Nationals, you will find the working dog is more likely to get you to that level. If you want a really nice quality dog with relatively easy going temperament that does have natural but sensible protection drives, that can make it's SchH titles with proper training, and is easier to live with and control than the Working line dog, then you will do better with the German Show line shepherd. The show lines were developed by breeders who are very focused on the structure and appearance of the dog. Although these dogs do have to obtain working titles in order to qualify for breeding, their working drives are usually lower than those of the working lines. The conformation lines are dogs that are generally easy to live with, trainable, stable, and calm, yet possessing enough drive to work and protect. The structure of these dogs is excellent, balanced, harmonious and efficient, and their general appearance is quite homogenous. They are mainly black and red, black and tan or occasionally sable. Working and show lines are still similar in temperament, with the working line exhibiting a higher drive and more intensity, making the show lines a better choice for children when placing them in a family environment. To read about the German Standards and the meaning of each title in your pedigree go to German Terminology. They are very different from the original German shepherds. Although these dogs have common ancestry to the German shepherd, they have become almost a breed onto themselves. These dogs are bred for show purposes, the breeders focusing almost exclusively on looks and movement. They have adapted the standard to their own preference; the result is that these dogs differ greatly from German shepherds found in the rest of the world. They are generally larger, softer, heavier, and have a lighter bone structure. There is often less differentiation of the two sexes, the males having less masculine heads and bodies, their angulations being quite extreme and their very structure being different from German shepherds. Most of these dogs do not have the required temperament to do any sort of work, with the exception of an occasional herding dog. They have gone a long way off from the temperament described in the breed standard. They are not even required to be free of dysplasia. These animals retain a potential for protective behavior and responses, but without the courage, stability and clear headedness to temper their actions. They are often fear-biters, nervous and stressed, showing inappropriate aggressive tendencies. They lack the courage for true protection work, their aggressive behavior being a result of defensiveness and fear for themselves and not an instinct to protect their master. This can be confusing to a novice, but the end result is very different; you cannot count on this type of dog to protect and defend you in a threatening situation. These are dogs that descend from American show lines, occasionally with some European lines mixed in, but are a generation or two, or more, removed from responsible American show line breeding. They are bred by people in their homes and backyards hence the name who have all the wrong reasons for breeding; puppies would be fun, the kids could experience the miracle of life, easy way to make a few dollars, and the list goes on. Not only do they usually not title or health screen their breeding stock, in most cases they aren't even aware these things exist, much less their importance. They know nothing about bloodlines or pedigrees and don't care to, though they'll often advertise their puppies in the newspaper as "champion lines". They will breed to a dog owned by a friend, family member, neighbor, or someone they meet on the street because it is easy, cheap and convenient. Most of these breeders aren't bad people, and they don't set out to produce substandard dogs. They do so out of complete ignorance of what it takes to be a responsible breeder, and the importance of thoroughly testing the health and temperament of breeding stock, and a lack of interest in educating themselves on those issues. Many actually believe that being AKC registered or having a champion or two several generations back in the pedigree makes for a quality, breed worthy animal. But while they may not intend to produce dogs with poor health and temperament, that is generally the result. Unfortunately, the vast majority of German Shepherds in North America are this type. And this is the single greatest reason for the poor reputation the German Shepherd had gained in recent years. Dogs bred by people who do not understand the breed, don't test their dogs' health and temperament, and are breeding only for themselves instead of for the betterment of the breed, are an accident waiting to happen. Many these dogs are soft, nervous, spooky, prone to separation anxiety and other behavioral problems, and weak in character. Some so much so that they are dangerous fear biters. Never get a dog from a Backyard Breeder. This is nothing but a game of Russian Roulette. Dogs from responsible breeders may cost more initially, but that is minimal compared to the vet and training fees that can accumulate due to health and temperament problems, a lawsuit caused by a dangerous dog, an the heartache that accompanies both. Below is a picture of both breeds. American Show Line. There are specific standards for show-line GSDs, and their color is one such requirement. Dark and rich colors such as black and red, black and tan, or black are usually preferred in show rings. Show line German Shepherds are thinner with slanted backs because of their greater hip angulation, giving the appearance of shorter back legs and longer front ones. They are calmer and more home-friendly than working line GSDs but can also be dangerous if not trained. They are also good with children but should not be left alone with them. You need to develop some boundaries, just like any other breed. Show line GSDs express their aggressiveness only when they need to defend themselves or are anxious in new situations due to poor socialization. You can learn more about the key differences between the bloodlines in this article, Working vs. We chose her for a mix of temperament, color, and looks. Willow German Show Line vs. Although both are bred for showing and are from the same meta ancestor, they possess certain contrasting traits. The differences in their bloodline characteristics can be easily identified and include predominantly physical characteristics, health concerns, and registration procedures. Differences in Physical Traits American show line German Shepherds usually have a narrow face, extremely angular hindquarters, and a downward slope in their back. They also have thicker bones and are heavier in weight but lighter in color. On the other hand, German show line German Shepherds typically have a slight angle to their hindquarters and usually have straighter backs. They are also darker and shorter than their American counterparts. German bloodline Shepherds or the European lines have a bigger head with an angled outline, rather than smooth curves, and usually weigh less. Different Health Concerns American German Shepherds suffer from specific health problems, including bloating, hip dysplasia due to their slanting back , and allergies. In contrast, the German show lines are less prone to developing hip problems due to straighter and more balanced posture. They also have more pain endurance. Their standardized breeding and strict training programs make them more stable and healthy. Different Breed Registration Processes There are distinct breed registration procedures for both these varieties, which plays a significant part in their health as well. German show lines can be registered in Germany only if they pass a specific breed criterion. These strict evaluations cover physical structure, endurance performance, and even herding. Governing bodies necessitate the clearing of these evaluations for registration. Breeding Standards Both the American and German show lines have different breeding standards which determine their abilities and, in some cases, even fate. They have to pass specific tests of obedience, health, and temperament. The American breeding standards have no such requirements. Show line GSDs have certain traits that distinguish them from working bloodlines in physical appearance, temperament, and capabilities. Color is one of the main hallmarks of a good show line. Since most people expect a GSD to be a typical black and tan or red and black color, they are preferred in the show ring. White German Shepherds are not allowed to show, nor are dogs without predominantly black noses. Good show line German Shepherds have a much larger body than working line ones and are also broader in the head with powerfully angled hindquarters. They also have medium or long and thick coats, which are somewhat longer than those found on the GSD working line. A show line dog must have neither cropped nor hanging ears but rather straight, triangular, and erect ones. A good show line GSD also does not have a docked tail. Their energy level is slightly lower than other types simply because they are not raised for working purposes. When expertly trained, they make fiercely loyal and friendly dogs with a good temperament, which is a prerequisite for show rings. It goes without saying that those who wag, wiggle, or have a habit of licking faces are not given preference. Show line dogs exhibiting bad behavior such as biting or incessant barking are immediately disqualified. Although having a cool attitude and some heft is necessary, showing too much attitude can get your dog barred. Since they were originally bred for herding and protecting sheep, having a muscular build is of importance. It is a misconception that show line GSDs do not need to be sturdy and that it is a trait attributed to only the working lines. Having ancestors produced to work indicates that German Shepherds must be strong, tall, broad of chest, and imposing. Some may even say that they need to look a little intimidating or scary, especially to strangers. A well-balanced show line with hindquarters developed in harmony with his chest and in proportion to the rest of the body has more chances of making his mark in a show ring. Male show line German Shepherds should distinctly look male, and females should look feminine. The West German Shepherd is a good example. This breed is quite famous when it comes to showing and is propagated majorly for showing. They make excellent family pets as well. Temperament Character of the Show Line German Shepherd Show line German Shepherds exhibit excellent temperaments and are very calm; they are much more easygoing than other German Shepherd types. Show lines are loving dogs that bond quickly with their owners. However, they are usually aloof with strangers and do not bond in passing. Since their past lies in herding sheep, they are highly protective of their family members and get along well with children and other dogs. Since they have high energy, they need quite a lot of mental and physical stimulation to drain their energy levels to avoid destructive behavior. Letting your dog off the leash can sometimes trigger such behavior, as even the most well-trained dogs can become distracted and overlook commands. Exercises such as agility, herding, tracking, and dock diving efficiently engage these dogs mentally and physically, thus regulating their temperament. Although they are bred for showing and not working, show line German Shepherds are preferred if they are a little standoffish, sturdy, and sometimes even unapproachable. This quality adds to their worth in the show ring. Show line German Shepherds are also prized for specific working dog abilities such as confidence, a bit of calm wariness, and independence. These qualities are not hard to attain as they are highly intelligent and trainable. Early socialization and ongoing obedience training ensure that a dog would grow up boasting these traits. Reward-based techniques positive reinforcement are also valuable methods of regulating the behavior and temperament of a show line German Shepherd. The German Shepherd Dog Club of America corroborates small pieces of biscuit or kibble as treats for training. Check out my article on the best treats for German Shepherds for some more ideas. Since they are very loving dogs, they are happiest when surrounded by family. Leaving them alone or chained up for long periods can disrupt their normal behavior. Thus, you should raise them amongst families with exposure to their daily activities. Giving only table scraps hurts their self-esteem and is also detrimental to their digestive system. You should also keep away cooked bones and food with high-fat content at all costs. The German Shepherd breed has undergone considerable changes since its inception, picking up new traits along the way. One such trait is the sloped back of the show line type. This aspect may look aesthetically pleasing but is controversial for a different reason. German Shepherds with straight backs are better adapted to perform their herding duties, which is why they have straight backs. Most GSDs with sloped backs are show line dogs, but why? He had a liking for dogs with a wolfish appearance and sharp senses who could undertake herding tasks immaculately and thus developed the German Shepherd. You can still get this fantastic book from Amazon in hardcover, paperback, or kindle. Back then, they were usually used for the purpose for which they were developed; herding and protecting homes and farms. The working line GSDs of today have an effortless gait because of their straight back, but that is not the case with the show lines. Along with other characteristics that add to their visual appeal and differentiate them from working GSDs, they possess a sloped back, which would most probably have Von Stephanitz rolling in his grave. This change in conformation from straight to a rectangular shape to sloped with an exaggerated hind leg angulation prevents them from being good working dogs. This caused show line GSDs to evolve through aggressive selective breeding. It is also suspected by breeders and owners alike that intensive breeding to conform to specific appearance standards has made the sloped back a skeletal deformity. Indeed, several German Shepherds with sloped backs are successfully competing and winning in show rings. But why? A report by the Royal Veterinary College highlighted survey results from clinics and showed how exaggerated breed standards cause cruel health problems when it comes to orthopedics. Years of this wear and tear can cause serious complications that can negatively affect their quality of life. Grooming does not mean bathing; it includes an assemblage of elements that keep your dog healthy and beautiful. Coat Show line German Shepherds have two coats and dense fur that gets tangled often. They shed hair all year long, and their undercoat is blown twice a year. During that time, you would need to brush your doggo daily. If not, loose hair can get on furniture and furballs in vacuums. There are a wide variety of brushes that you can use for this purpose. I use the FURminator de-shedding tool from Amazon. Willow proudly showing off her FURminator! Frequent bathing is unnecessary for show line German Shepherds as it makes their skin dry, irritated, and flaky. Avoid using harsh shampoos or conditioners as they can damage the skin and hair and cause rashes. Choose the FURminator de-shedding shampoo and conditioner set from Amazon, as it promotes healthy skin and coat and contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Since their coats are pretty thick, they require a lot of time to dry off. Moving the hairdryer back and forth can cause the coat to become very tangled and matted. You can also use dry shampoo when you do not want to bathe your doggo. Frequent cleaning with a suitable brush is advised, so are regular checkups. She loves having a good chew on them, and this box of multiple flavors does the trick. Taking your show line GSD to a groomer may be a better option if you face trouble trimming his nails, as cutting too deep may injure your dog. If that happens and causes your dog to bleed, apply styptic powder to the area, and avoid DIYing the process the next time. Do you want to learn more about GSD care? Excess wax and debris can accumulate in the ears, which would not look good for a show line dog. You can use either ear drops for cleaning or pour a little solution into each ear and massage the base gently. Next, use a soft cloth or cotton pad to clean the wax and debris. More importantly, you should choose a quiet and crowd-free area for this process to prevent any mishaps. Show line German Shepherds are not a cheap breed. Since show line German Shepherds are prone to various diseases, opting for such a dog for showing purposes may not be the best choice. Remember, good show bloodlines are healthy before they are aesthetically pleasing. The German Shepherd breed has high energy levels and needs substantial mental and physical stimulation regardless of the subset. Although less than a working line, a show line GSD requires daily movement to keep his limbs and bones in check. A minimum of two hours of exercise is advisable for show line German Shepherds. This time can include walks, engaging exercise, or even extra playtime and training sessions. Exercise time also depends upon the age, health, and size of your dog, e. Since this is a case-to-case scenario, you should pay attention to signs of enthusiasm as well as exhaustion in your dog. Moreover, you should be present and fully engaged when getting your best friend to exercise. This can help develop a stronger bond with your dog as well. German Shepherds usually take to being guard dogs since they were developed for this very purpose and had a history in this domain. Although the show line GSDs available today were developed by meticulous breeders who kept the structure and appearance of the dog in view, they can still be good guard dogs. They would need substantial training to become good protection dogs, but that is not a problem since they are easily trainable and highly intelligent. Along with possessing certain show-worthy traits, show-line GSDs also possess enough drive to work and protect. They usually have strong protective instincts and are innately quite protective of their owners. All show line GSDs may not resort to violence upon encountering an intruder, which varies by training and temperament. That said, a show line would do everything he can to protect his owner. Owning a show line GSD, although quite rewarding, is not always flowers and rainbows. It is more like flowers, rainbows, and responsibilities. They can take part in show rings and competitions if they conform to certain health and appearance standards. Since they are highly trainable, they can be easily groomed for appearance, taught not to be threatened or distracted by an audience, and trained to perform show line routines. They have a more relaxed energy level and are balanced, intelligent, and active. Even if you do not have an interest in showing them, they can be good family pets and even outstanding guard dogs. The working line GSD may act aloof with strangers but develops strong bonds of trust with his owner. They can have health issues that stem from the genetics in their breeding lines, hip and elbow dysplasia being the most common ones. They have additional grooming requirements to ensure their eligibility for dog shows. They also shed all year long , which is not the best if you are allergic to fur or to sweeping your floors. They have sloped backs and shorter hind legs, which can affect their movement ability and even cause orthopedic health problems. Do you like to check other variations of German Shepherds? Most breeders achieve an excellent return on investment with proper training, care, and diet. Happy raising! One of the primary reasons is because of their versatility. There are few canine breeds that are capable of producing award-winning show dogs AND highly trained working dogs. As a result, many GSD owners can become frustrated when their Shepherd fails to fulfill their expectations. That is why it is important to understand the difference between show line and working line German Shepherds. In this singular goal, von Stephanitz was completely successful as the countless generations of German Shepherd working dogs can attest. Stephanitz established the strict guidelines for the breed in with the progenitor of the breed and started the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde Society for the German Shepherd Dog. In the years since the advent of the German Shepherd breed, there have been three distinct versions of the working line breed. A healthy temperament for owners of all ages, this type of working GSD excels on the job and at home with the family. TheCzech Working Line: An offshoot of the DDR line, this version of the breed comes from a single breeding kennel and can are typically used in both military and police work. Whatever situation they find themselves in, a trained working line GSD will tackle it with an intelligence and confidence rarely found in any other canine breed. Unmatched temperament: Owners of working line GSDs are treated to a dog with unequalled loyalty and exceptional energy to perform the tasks they are trained to accomplish. A few of the show line GSD characteristics are: Physical Characteristics: Much larger in body and broader in the head with powerfully angled hindquarters An energy level that is lower than the working class GSDs A longer and thicker coat than those found on working line GSDs A very loyal and friendly temperament for owners of all ages, especially when expertly trained. This version of the breed is very agile and extremely obedient after proper training. So, as you can see, there are many things to consider when planning to bring a German Shepherd into your home. Knowing the difference between the show line and working line of the breed is extremely helpful to picking the right dog for your needs. Breed Info German Shepherds might seem to have the same general appearance. This article will examine the Show Line German Shepherd, their history, and the typical characteristics you can expect from these dogs. They are different from their working line counterparts in physical appearance, temperament, and drive. So, they have different needs in terms of handling, training, and care. In fact, they can all link back a single dog, Horand von Grafrath. Horand von Grafrath was owned by Captain Max von Stephanitz who is credited for the development and standardization of the German Shepherd. For decades, standards for breeding these working dogs were strictly enforced. Over time, some enthusiasts of the breed were more interested in developing its appearance than its drive and temperament. Both the American and Canadian show lines are maintained using the same breed standards. The only difference between the two is the registry service and organization that upholds those standards. The reason why this variant is so popular is that they are easier to handle than working line types. For this reason, they are regarded as multipurpose working dogs and yet do excellently as household pets. The problem with American Show Line GSDs being so common is that many backyard breeders reproduce them indiscriminately to turn an easy profit. This type of irresponsible breeding leads to poor health, bad genetics, and unpredictable temperaments. They participate in conformation events that bring prestige to their bloodline and help their breeders earn prominence in their field. They may not have the drive and nerves of steel needed for such jobs as criminal apprehension and tactical deployment. However, they perform excellently in such roles as tracking and detection. However, their calmer nature makes them better suited for some settings and also makes them better service dogs. They are, after all, merely different variants of the same breed, but they also differ. Here are general characteristics and traits you can expect from an American Show Line German Shepherd: Appearance The most distinctive characteristic of the American Show Line German Shepherd is its angulated hindquarters. In terms of build, show lines are usually bulkier and larger, although they are still quite agile and athletic. Their chests and heads are broader as well. Additionally, show lines are usually those that don tan or red coats with the classic black saddle. Their coats might also be longer, thicker, and prone to heavy shedding. They have a lower work drive and an especially lower prey drive. Nevertheless, these dogs still have strong protective instincts and will be wary of strangers. Commercial breeding of American Show Lines has also led to the proliferation of nervous dogs with temperament issues. These make them more prone to biting and other forms of fear-based aggression. Personality Traits Canine personality depends on each individual dog. Some might be more aloof while others are incredibly sociable. This is true whether they are show lines or working lines. Something notable about the American Show Line German Shepherd is that they are more likely to be playful. They are sometimes even goofy attention-seekers that love to make you laugh. These dogs also tend to be more affectionate and willing to switch off for a snuggle. Training Requirements Despite their calmer nature, these dogs are still energetic and relatively high drive dogs. They need to be raised by a capable handler, ideally one with experience in working breeds. Otherwise, some dogs can easily develop not only bad manners but also confidence issues that lead to fear-based aggression. They are also very eager to please and they thrive on plenty of mental stimulation. Because of this, they are exciting and fulfilling to train. They need plenty of exposure to develop their confidence and understand the best ways to interact with their environment. Additionally, they still have copious amounts of energy that they need to burn off on a daily basis. Physical exercise and lots of opportunities for play will help them become healthy and happy dogs. As for grooming, these dogs need regular brushing as they are notorious shedders. They shed especially heavily twice a year in preparation for the summer and winter seasons. During these times, they will also need to bathe more frequently. American Show Line German Shepherds are much more suited to household companionship than their working line counterparts. They generally have a calmer temperament and have a lower work drive. Ultimately, they are still working dogs that require a job to do in order to thrive. They need proper handling, training, and socialization. Even show line German Shepherds are incredibly energetic and so will do best in a family that can meet their need for exercise and lots of mental stimulation. Plenty of walks and other physical activities should do the trick along with training , puzzle toys , and enrichment games. Participating in canine sports like flyball , canicross , and dock diving would be even better. However, those from well-reputed breeders and offspring of show winners can fetch much higher prices. Other breeders charge much more because of their experience, expertise, and pedigree. Any socialization and training they receive will also affect the price. German Shepherds generally live between 10 and 14 years. Because of irresponsible backyard breeding, many show lines suffer from severe health issues and have shorter-than-average lifespans. Responsible breeders take special care of their pedigrees and so will practice proper selective breeding. They will also screen their puppies for various genetic, behavioral, and health defects before selling them. These dogs are among the most popular breeds in shelters and there are many that are just waiting for homes that can accommodate their size and energy. Final Thoughts Although show line GSDs are more suited as household pets than their working line counterparts, they are still working dogs. They are extremely energetic and will need plenty of physical exercises and mental stimulation. They will also need proper socialization and a firm handler.
