Initially they have no idea how you want them to behave, or how and when they can expect the things they want and need in life. The more consistent everybody is with the puppy, the quicker they will learn all this stuff and the happier everyone will be. So decide and write down if necessary when your puppy will have all their needs met, make sure everybody knows who is responsible for each task and make sure everybody knows the rules. You might think the collection and journey home with your new puppy is no big deal, but there are many things can go wrong. Therefore, you should never take a puppy before 8 weeks old. During the first 8 weeks, a puppy learns a lot from their mother and litter-mates: Bite inhibition, canine body language, acceptable play and interaction with other dogs and how to accept discipline. Things you will find it very hard to teach them later yourself. The flip side of this is that the 7 to 14 week stage is the most impressionable for a puppy, where they bond strongest with people and must be socialized to all the sights, sounds and smells of the world so they grow up confident and comfortable with their surroundings. Having a loose puppy in the car presents a very real danger of leading to a crash, they can easily climb out of a box and now is not the time to use a harness and car safety belt. If the crate is small enough you can place it on a front or rear passenger seat and secure it with the seat-belt, or you may have to place it in the trunk of your car. Fully line the crate with absorbent paper in case there are any accidents, this will keep most of the mess off your puppy and make cleaning easier. And finally, place a chew toy or two in the crate to keep your puppy occupied. If you have another person to help you, your puppy can ride home in their lap if the journey is short. They must be under your passengers control. They will also need to potty every half or so. Therefore, you should plan breaks along the way every 30 minutes or so. Stop the car, allow them to drink, then wait for them to wee before setting off again. When you stop, make sure your puppy is on leash and tightly held by someone before letting them out of the car. And as an extra precaution, carry your puppy and only put them down to do their business, then carry them back into the car. Take with you some towels, plastic bags, kitchen roll and deodorizer to take care of any accidents. And when driving, take all corners slowly, and accelerate and brake gently. So your task is to set up and stick to these schedules, begin training your puppy and help them to learn how you want them to behave and when they can expect the things they need in life. What should you feed your puppy You should feed your puppy the same food they had at the breeders because an abrupt change in diet almost always leads to stomach upset. Any time you cannot closely supervise them, you have to confine them, either in their crate, an exercise pen or a puppy proofed room secured with a barrier across the doorway. The point of confining them as a puppy is so they can enjoy all the freedom in the world once they are an adult. By confining them with treat dispensing chew toys they get rewarded for chewing the right things and develop a chew toy obsession. Confine them now, they form a good chew toy obsession and have no chance of developing bad chewing habits. Then once they are over their adolescent chewing stage you slowly open up the house to them and eventually they can have free roam and be completely trusted. A little sacrifice when young for a better life later. And a second hugely important reason for confining your puppy when you cannot supervise them is for speedier house training. In fact if you read my comments from earlier, you will see you start the very first moment you finish the journey home. In essence, house training is about creating good habits while avoiding bad ones and for the speediest success you want to start immediately. Wherever your puppy is able to potty has the chance of becoming their favored toilet spot for many weeks or months to come. So you want to prevent them pottying inside, and encourage them to potty outside. The main ingredients of a successful house training program are preventing mistakes and praising heavily for doing the right thing. Achieving this is all about schedules, supervision and confinement. Now, your puppy will need to potty anywhere from every 15 to 45 minutes. So to start with, take them outside every 30 minutes and adjust this schedule to suit their natural rhythm. You must also take them outside immediately after they wake up from any sleep, after any eating or drinking, after play and after any heightened excitement. These are times that often lead to a puppy needing to potty so take them outside at these times and you will avoid many mistakes while taking advantage of predictable opportunities to praise them for doing the right thing. Simply do your best to take them out to potty extremely often so they go in the right place as often as possible. Your expectations of a new Labrador puppy We expect an awful lot from our puppies. Both when they are still very small, and especially as they grow bigger. We expect that puppies will enjoy being cuddled. We expect that our children will be able to play with them, that the efforts we put in to housetraining will be rewarded, that the puppy will listen to what we say. We expect that our puppies will be happy to be stroked, and to join us for walks and games. As he grows, we expect our puppy to return our love and affection, to respect us, be loyal, and obedient. The reality of a new Labrador puppy The reality of life with your first puppy, can be a bit of a shock. Nor had we anticipated just how depressing it would be to clear up urine and faeces every time we get up in the morning, or return home from a quick shopping trip. Or to have to wait two hours for our new friend to come home when he is done chasing rabbits. But they are common reasons for people to become disenchanted with their furry companion. The first is to move the expectations of the new puppy owner closer to reality, and we do this by providing information. By letting people know what to expect from life with a new puppy. The second way is to improve on the reality of life with a new puppy by preparing puppy owners in advance. This helps them to make decisions, and to provide for their puppy in a way that avoids problems arising in the future. What to expect from a new puppy This is important knowledge. If you know someone who is planning a new arrival, do pass it on. There are a number of areas where puppies and owners may come into conflict, right from day one. Forearmed is forewarned, and if you are aware of these, there are steps you can take to avoid them. Puppies at night — sleeping and crying Most new puppies have never slept alone. If asked to sleep alone on the first night in their new home, they usually cry. And a small puppy can make a surprisingly loud noise. Unless you live in a mansion, you will be able to hear him. If you crate your puppy at night, expect to get up in the middle night and take your puppy outside for a wee, for up to two weeks. During the day, some new puppies can last an hour or so between wees, but again, many cannot. If you are going back to work, or want to leave your puppy for three to four hours before he is five or six months old, you need to arrange for someone else to take care of him during the day. Even for this short period of time. Much of housetraining success lies in getting good habits established from the start. And this means getting that puppy outside to his toilet area, whenever his little bladder is getting full. But too much isolation is a common cause of noisy or destructive behaviour. Puppies need company. Older puppies may cope happily with being left for up to four hours, but even an adult Labrador may become distressed or destructive if left alone for a full working day on a regular basis. Expect that he may even pull you off your feet and into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The solution is to teach your new friend to walk alongside you, on and off the lead. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to train her and raise her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. That means Bubba will be with for almost a year and a half. We train one or two of these puppies each year, and over the years we have gotten pretty good at it. We also train adult dogs for hunting and competition, so we see a lot of dogs come into our program. Dogs that have each been raised differently. There are some definite training tips that can help you help your lab grow up to be the best version of himself. Training and socialization for very young Labrador puppies — week one The first week of a puppy being away from its litter is very stressful for the puppy. Most often, the first two days, the puppy will sleep a lot! The pup is adjusting to all the changes, and they need time to do that. After the first couple days you may notice a spike of energy. This is your sign that the puppy is adjusting well and is ready to be exposed to a few more things. Labrador puppy training that first week home Here are the things we work on during week one. A nylon adjustable one is usually best since puppies grow quickly. It often takes the puppy a few days to adjust to having a collar on. Intro crate We introduce our puppies to a crate on day one. Literally the day we bring them home. Most puppies will cry, bark or howl while in the crate the first few or many times. Ignore it, it does not hurt the puppy at all. Always wait until the puppy settles down and is quiet, even if that quiet only lasts for just a minute or two. Learn more about crate training. Intro to housebreaking Another day one lesson and one that will last for a few weeks or months. We introduce housebreaking day one by allowing the puppy to run around an enclosed area under close supervision. If your puppy then goes potty outside, great! The thing to remember about housebreaking, is that your puppy should never be allowed to roam the house or a room without supervision. The only way to housebreak a dog is for them to get caught in the middle of an accident. That is how they learn that what they are doing is not right. Learn more about housebreaking. Intro leash We introduce a leash to our puppies around day three of being home. But once they start getting more energy and get more inquisitive, we use a Flexi-lead attached to the nylon collar to take the puppy outside. This accomplishes two goals. The gentle tugs on the leash and pressure when the puppy strains against the leash are great training for handling pressure as they get older. Intro to pressure and correction The last thing we introduce to our new puppy during the first week home is pressure and correction. This is an often-missing element to training that can severely handicap a dog that you want to be a hunting companion or competition dog. The kind of pressure I am talking about is very mild such as saying NO to the puppy when they are chewing up your shoes or scratching through the carpet. This is the way mama dogs carry their puppies and it does not hurt them at all. This does not hurt the puppy; it is exactly what a mama dog does to teach her puppies. Commands to start using that first week home The first week there are some commands we start using so that the puppy will associate the words we use with actions. Puppies play and explore with their mouths, and often they will think it is great fun to bite your hands and feet. If this does not curb the behavior, I grab her lower jaw, wrapping her gums around her teeth and squeeze. I have found this to be very effective, especially if you start this the first week you have the puppy home. The longer you wait to start, the harder it becomes to stop this behavior. It takes very little pressure to stop a 7-week-old puppy from biting. Learn more about how to stop your Lab puppy from biting you. Off command The OFF command is also started day one. The OFF command is used to stop a puppy or dog from jumping on you. It can also be used to keep a dog off a sofa or other furniture. Starting day one, I gently use my knee to push down the puppy each time they jump on me. I say OFF when I do this. Usually, a gentle push with the knee is all it takes with a very small puppy. They learn this command very quickly. If your puppy is a bit more energetic or stubborn and tries to jump on you despite your gentle pushes, then you may need to use a little more force. Even if you were to knock your puppy backwards onto her back, that is not going to hurt her seriously. But it will likely make a good impression and cause her to think twice before jumping on you again. With jumping, consistency is important. You must knock your puppy off every time she jumps on you. We use this while the puppy is on a leash, and we are pulling them toward us. I only use this command for very young dogs. Your goal is to get the puppy to rest in your arms and not move. But if you keep at it, you will see your dog settle for longer and longer periods of time. Introduction to retrieving Lastly, since all our puppies are retrievers, we start introducing the puppy to retrieving. The first few times are simply throwing a toy a few feet and if the puppy runs out and gets it and comes back to you, great. Then take the item and throw it again. If the puppy does not come back or does not even run out to get the item, then stop for the day. Just let the retrieving develop naturally. Next week we will start more formal retrieving training. Final thoughts on what you should do that first week with your new Labrador puppy As you can see, there is a lot of training that you can do with your seven- or eight-week-old puppy. And while you can wait for training, your puppy is ready and able to learn quickly right now. This was one of the most important jobs at the North Pole, and Mrs. Flour, of course, and eggs, and ginger and reindeer milk. No baking soda for this gingerbread, though. Claus used only the lightest, brightest flying dust collected from the giant mirror basket on the top of the house for leavening. And for energy, she used a special windmill to collect cosmic rays from the exact center of magnetic north. This was very difficult as the position of magnetic North changed every year, so she had to send the elves out to locate where to put the windmill to collect and process the cosmic rays. They got caught up on the sails of the windmill, and were collected in a special glass barrel as cosmic candy where they waited to be mixed into the gingerbread every year. The light from the barrel was every color of the rainbow and was so brilliant that Mrs. Claus kept it in a special cupboard until it was ready to be mixed into the gingerbread. On this particular night Mrs. Claus was having some trouble with her gingerbread. First the flour was too coarse and she had to sift it again, then the eggs were too small and she had to send the elves out to get more eggs. They were all out of Ostrich and Christmas Goose eggs, but she was lucky that someone had brought her Penguin eggs all the way from the South Pole. She was whipping the batter with her special whisk and humming Oh Tannenbaum happily under her breath as she checked the clock and saw that she was just going to make her deadline without a minute to spare. As she whirled around the kitchen her apron strings fluttered like streamers caught in a hurricane. A very handsome pug dog named Spunk was sitting out of the way next to the fireplace. Spunk was Mrs. Spunk was a handsome jet black dog with beautiful brown eyes - the only white was on the tip of his curly tail. Spunk always sat next to the fireplace because it offered the best view of the entire kitchen. He had been Mrs. Claus except perhaps for her special gingerbread recipe. Claus had a very special oven in the stone fireplace that Santa Claus had built centuries before. The oven had a big iron door adorned with a Christmas Tree design that had some very old magic in it - as the oven heated, the ornaments on the Christmas tree would change from dull grey iron to bright colors - blue for warm, green for medium, red for hot, and bright red for very hot. There were even some colors for in-between temperatures. It was very clever blacksmithing to create such a magical oven door, and it was also fun to look at. Right now Spunk was eyeing the oven and all was on schedule. The green indicated that the oven was almost ready. Claus was bustling around the kitchen and was at a critical point - adding the flying dust and cosmic candy to the batter. As she tipped the flying dust into the cosmic candy her hand slipped. The mixing jar fell on the floor, spilling some of the precious dust onto the tiles. She looked up to check the clock - it was late but she still had just enough time to finish! The batter glowed and glittered with power as she turned it into the giant gingerbread pan. Spunk jumped out of the way as Mrs. Claus opened up the oven door and put the pan in. Claus was sweeping up the glass and flying dust into the dustbin. Spunk barked and ran over to her to tell her that the oven needed to be turned down, but she closed the door before he got to her. Spunk was alone in the kitchen and the gingerbread was going to burn! Maybe even too weak to slide down the chimney! This was a terrible crisis! Spunk ran round and round the kitchen - he glanced at the oven - the ornaments blinked red and were starting to glow brighter. If they turned to purple all the gingerbread would be ruined. If they turned white, the whole kitchen would explode! Spunk had heard the elf repairing the oven say that when the oven got to white it was hotter than the sun in July! The controls for the oven were way up high on the fireplace chimney, far to high a reach for Spunk. The ornaments were starting to glow bright red and move to orange! Spunk raced over to the worktable and a tiny flash of light caught his eye. It was the cosmic candy and flying dust that Mrs. Claus had spilled. Suddenly Spunk knew what he had to do. He ran over to the spot and licked the tile. Mrs Claus had said it was dangerous, but it was the only way to save the gingerbread and to save Christmas. Even though it was only a few specks, Spunk hoped it would be enough to somehow help. Suddenly Spunk sat back on the floor and shot across the floor, trailing sparks and rainbows as he slid! He hit the wall next to the fireplace and stars shot across his vision. Suddenly he was flying! He looked at the clock on the wall - the pendulum was stopped - the fire on the logs was at a standstill, and even the dust motes in the air were motionless! He was in the Santa Claus time flow! Now he had all the time in the world, and he could fly! The colors on the indicators went back from almost orange to a brownish red, just right for cooking gingerbread. The gingerbread was saved and Santa would have enough food to last until the first plate of cookies! Christmas was saved! Spunk looked around the kitchen as he floated back to the floor, wondering how long the effect of the flying dust would last. The clock was hardly moving. It was only a little flying dust and cosmic candy, but Spunk was a lot smaller than Santa Claus. Claus was all out of ingredients. Spunk settled down feeling hungry. Spunk settled down for a nap, hoping that when he woke time would be sped up again. He looked in the trash can and found the broken bits of glass and some more of the flying dust. There was nothing to eat! He looked in the cupboards and found nothing. He took a deep breath and exhaled, and slowly floated up to the highest cupboards in the kitchen, opening one after another. Nothing to eat, not even a crumb. Spunk told himself that he just would need to be patient and either the cosmic candy would wear off or the 30 minutes would pass. Either way eventually Mrs. Claus would come back and all would be well. After the second week, Spunk was hungry and thirsty, but he noticed that the clock hands had started to move more normally. The third week passed and Spunk was so weak that he had a hard time getting up to check the clock to see if it had moved. Now it was showing twenty minutes had passed. Only ten minutes to go in normal time before the gingerbread was cooked and Mrs. Claus came back to the kitchen! He was skin and bones and his mouth was parched. Claus rushed into the kitchen. Much to her great surprise, everything was fine - the gingerbread was perfect, the multicolored steam rising with sparkles and stars as she removed the pan from the oven. She scratched her head with one of her knitting needles as she tried to figure out how the gingerbread was saved. As she set the pan on the table she heard a faint cough by the fireplace. Over in the basket there was a tiny black form, not much bigger than a Christmas cupcake. Claus in wonderment. He tried to get up but was too weak. Design and features Setup Setting up the Puppy Cube was straight-forward. Once cables are plugged in, the rear panel may be reinstalled to give a nice clean look to the unit. The Puppy Cube arrives with a partially-charged battery. I charged the Puppy Cube for several hours until the battery-charge indicator light turned from orange to green. The only real problem I had setting up the Puppy Cube was finding a large enough flat surface upon which to test the system. Performance I am going to break this review into three parts: projector, projector and HID human interface device , and stand-alone media device. The Puppy Cube can project onto either a horizontal surface e. The integrated camera is only available when the Puppy Cube is projecting onto a vertical service. The camera is set to point straight out from the Puppy Cube. This means that unless you put the projector up on a stand or a stack of books, you only get a video of yourself from the shoulders down unless you hunch over. Projector When used as just a projector the Puppy Cube performs as well as most other p-native projectors. The image is bright enough for use in dimly-to-moderately-lit rooms. The auto-focus and keystone corrections function well. The Puppy Cube successfully displayed p, p, 2K, and 4K feeds. Videos played well at all resolutions using HDMI, but desktop images at 2K and 4K resolutions suffered from noticeable degradation when down-sampled to the native resolution of the projector. PowerPoint slides were acceptable at all resolutions. I was able to wirelessly display non-DRM videos e. I was able to connect to my UPnP server using the Video Lan app and play different movies stored on my server. The virtual mouse system worked better than the virtual keyboard in my initial testing. While I am primarily an iOS user in the mobile arena, I do have some familiarity with the Android UI from helping my sons and some less tech-savvy neighbors with their phones. My sons who live in both iOS and Android had fewer problems than I did, but they still had problems finding and using some of the controls. Additionally, the unit acts like there is a low power, continuous drain on the battery, which I attribute to the unit being in a suspend mode rather than being powered all the way down. It is for me very difficult to summarize the puppy cube, so bear with me - this review will be quite long. Remember the Sony Xperia Touch from a few years back? I sure do, and I also remember the eye-watering price tag of almost 2k USD and the abysmal lumens it could output. So I ended up never buying it. Fast forward a couple of years and puppy robot robotics? I couldn't stop myself from ordering one, and I'm damn glad I did! The touch functionality feels more responsive, the quality of the projected touchscreen feels fuller and more crisp the ANSI lumens compared to Sony's helps a lot. The customized version of Android looks a bit goofy, but it's not bad, and most apps run just fine. The perhaps biggest caveat is the lack of GMS, but more on that later. The projected touchscreen is 23 inches, and works on any flat surface you get the best color rendition if it's white. You can install apps from an app store called UpToDown, which is a pretty common third-party app store in Europe, apparently. Apps will automatically appear in English if you set the device to that language only two options anyway, English and Chinese. Apps that only work in portrait mode will require you to move the device, which can be annoying at times - landscape mode is definitely preferred. If you want, you can connect peripherals to the puppy cube. I'd recommend the latter, to which I've connected a mouse, keyboard, headphones and a PS4 controller, not to mention the included remote control. Here's where the real magic happens - if you tilt the puppy cube down, and have it project to a wall instead of a table, you can up to inches of screen. While you lose the touchscreen functionality if you make the screen size any larger than 23 inches, you can still use the peripherals just fine. What that means is that you get a computer the size of a big milk carton, and a screen as big as your entire wall. Load up any productivity apps and you're able to do real work on this thing. It will also auto focus, but by using the remote you can also manually fine-tune the focus as well. Or just watch Netflix, or YouTube. The puppy cube can work as a stand-alone device in horizontal mode, but also as a regular projector. The integrated speakers are decent, and the device can even act as Bluetooth speakers! And let's not forget that it is portable. The battery will last minutes according the the official information, which should be enough for at least a full-length movie and then some. But despite all the versatility, there are some cons too. The lack of GMS being the biggest one, but there are a few others too. I'll list both pros and cons below. But the pros certainly outweighs the cons. But if you just want a portable projector, then you might be better off buying something cheaper. The form factor is great and the virtual interface is really awesome and unique. However as a projector -- ummm. I was really disappointed when I connected the device to HDMI direct, there were slight delays and the audio was not always in synch with the picture3. My mac kept saying the device screen settings could not be determined and the resolution was all over the place both mirrored or as separate displays 4. The Google style app store was blah - and many of the apps are not supported by the deviceIn summary I had high hopes. The virtual interface is something special and very responsive, but if I can't use it as a proper projector I think it falls a bit short.
