Once I substract my overhead costs from whatever amount of money made from litters I frequently find I have been working for minimum wages. Sure, there are ways of making breeding more profitable and reducing overhead costs specifically. Breeders don't have to spend thousands on health testing and subsequently don't have to cut dogs from their program because they assume if the dog is alive it must be healthy enough to breed. They could breed a mamma dog endlessly instead of retiring her after a few litters. They don't have to spend thousands on stud fees and just breed whatever dogs they have access to- like moms to sons, fathers to daughters and so forth. They can do everything under the table instead of paying for licenses, registrations, and taxes. They don't have to buy new blankets, puppy pads and laundry detergent and just have the dogs live in their own filth in a barn. They don't have to pay for vaccines, dewormer, or medical care. They can let who lives live, and who dies die instead of rushing sick puppies to the vet for lifesaving care. They can stack cages on top of cages and keep a hundred breeding age dogs and push out dozens of litters per month. They can save time and labor by keeping dogs on wire bottom cages to let the poop and pee fall through the bottom instead of having the dogs exercising- after all a dog out of a cage is a dog you have to train and constantly keep your eyes on to stay out of trouble. You get the point. I do everything in my power to enrich the lives of my dogs as much as possible. I treat my dogs as if they were my own children. And in my personal philosophy if it ever comes to the point where I can no longer provide the five star care to my breeding program then I won't be breeding at all. I see it as- I purposely brought these dogs into the world so I should personally be responsible for them. Just like human children, if you don't want to dedicate your life to being a mom or dad, then please for the childs sake DONT reproduce. Furthermore, its my responsibility to find these puppies homes that will provide the same level of care that I do, or better. That is why I ask my families to submit a puppy application and why I ask so many personal questions. I need to know that my puppy is going into good hands. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you are never home. French Bulldogs are most famous for their clingy personalities. They don't want to be alone. Some families are lucky enough to work from home, or have family members home, can hire help, or can bring their pup to work- these are all wonderful situations considering the pup will almost always be with a responsible adult. Don't buy a French Bulldog as a gift. I always tell my puppy families that owning a Frenchie puppy is like having a baby. Couples regularly take years to prepare for a baby, and children who ask for puppies typically need to first graduate from caring for a fish or hamster to show they have they discipline, consistency. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you have allergies I just don't recommend taking an allergy pill a day- trust me this will get old fast and when you no longer want to take the medication but cannot live normally when exposed to dander all of a sudden the dog will become nuisance. It's so important to consider what you will need to do or change to your daily life to ensure this addition to your home will work- and if that change is something you can commit to for the next decade. If it is impossible to undergo immunotherapy, or take medication on a daily basis, then a dogless life may be your unfortunate reality because French Bulldogs DO shed. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you have an unstable lifestyle There are several things to be said under this category. Just like when preparing to have a child there are a few "bottom line" must haves that go beyond the crib and stroller- This is the absolute foundation, do you have a home? Does your apartment or rental allow dogs? Is the back yard fenced? Is there any place that is even remotely convenient and safe for going potty times a day? Is there a pool that needs to be puppy proofed? Are you aware that French Bulldogs absolutely cannot swim and WILL drown if they fall into a pool, even a shallow pond, water feature, kiddie pool? Are you constantly traveling or moving? And will you be able to take the dog with you everywhere you go? And if not, then where will the dog be while you are away. Would "away" time at least be consistent so that both the dog and the caregiver aren't left to fend for themselves? Do you have air conditioning? Are you aware that French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed and cannot tolerate heat or stringent exercise especially in humid conditions? Please be aware that I do not ever recommend allowing new puppies free roam of the house until they are fully potty trained and can be trusted not to hurt themselves or cause any damage to your home. Do you truly have the time to dedicate dozens and dozens of hours to training your new puppy? And are you willing to be consistent with training, essentially creating a new lifestyle for yourself in order to create a safe, enriched, and achievable living standard for your dog? Don't buy a French Bulldog if you are living paycheck to paycheck. But this is only the first expense involved with dog ownership. I personally require each one of my puppy families to purchase pet insurance. I cannot imagine being in a situation where the family must choose between a vet bill and their pets life. Accidents and emergencies DO happen. Now lets scale things up for a dog that is more medically fragile and needs treatment for something like intervertebral disc disease. Dog ownership is extremely expensive. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you don't have patience. French Bulldogs are notoriously stubborn. Its not uncommon to take an entire year to potty train a Frenchie to the point where you can leave them alone to free roam your house for 6 hours and come home to zero potty accidents. Not only are they difficult to potty train they are extremely naughty. I don't necessarily believe this point is exclusive to French Bulldogs but they certainly can be destructive if left to themselves with no supervision and nothing to keep them busy. Have you see the instagram posts of "dog shaming" and they show photos of all the fluff torn out of pillows, drywall and moldings eaten away, shoes and couches eaten up, toilet paper completely unrolled and all over the home, garbage tipped over and all over the kitchen, and even entire doors broken though? Well, yep don't be surprised if you come home to this when you let your dog home alone with nothing to do and zero training. Training, routine, discipline and respect takes A LOT of effort and a lot of time to create. So if you don't have the patience to properly train, or at least the money to hire a trainer and stay consistent with the training they have done for you then a French Bulldog might not be for you. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you have a sensitive nose. Feeding a biologically appropriate diet of raw meat, vegetables and supplements can help with this issue tremendously but even then once in a while I find my dogs can clear the room. These chemicals, along with many chemicals in cleaning agents and even flea meds can cause severe and in some cases irreversible neurological effects such as seizures. On a final note, having a French Bulldog can be life changing in all the good ways too. Frenchies are truly a soul dog, a best friend. They will be there for you through thick and thin, and their love is unconditional. Grooming includes the trimming of the hair, and is usually done in tandem with bathing or directly after but does not need to happen quite as frequently, although you are welcome to do so if you would like. Bathing helps you check in on your Labradoodle, maintain their coat from tangling, and keeps them healthy and clean. Labradoodles should be bathed every 2 to 3 weeks but can go up to 4 or 5 weeks depending on the time of year and their other grooming habits. For example, a dog will shed more in the fall and spring as he or she prepares for the cold or hot weather respectively; you will want to bathe him or her more during this time. Bathing your Labradoodle regularly helps you take care of their hair and also allows you to inspect all areas of their body. You will want to take into consideration the amount of shedding happening as well as the amount of outside time your Labradoodle is getting. If it is a high shedding season, you will want to bathe and groom your Labradoodle more frequently to assist in the shedding process. Similarly, when they spend a lot of time outdoors they get dirtier with sweat, mud, pollen, or sticks and need a more regular grooming routine as well. Since a Labradoodle coat repels dirt anyway, this should not be difficult. Simply follow the standard guidelines, and you should be fine. Labradoodle puppies actually need less bathing than full-grown Labradoodles, except in the case of visible dirt. When a Labradoodle puppy is developing his or her adult fur coat, his or her body will be attempting to regulate the oils that help to prevent dry skin among other concerns. Additionally, it is not until a dog has reached past the six- to eight-month range that his or her adult coat has become more water-resistant. Thus, as your Labradoodle puppy grows and plays, it is important to consider only bathing once per month or unless you can see visible dirt. If you are able to simply brush the dirt away, and your puppy does not have a strong odor, you may consider doing this to spread the bathing process out. Daily brushing is not necessary but will make the scheduled grooming less intensive. Labradoodles are pretty playful dogs all throughout their lifetime, but this may be especially true during their puppy years. Therefore, you may find that your Labradoodle puppy tends to roll around in the dirt more than he or she will in later years. If this is the case, then the basic brushing or rinsing method may be preferable to bathing weekly. Many people wonder when it is safe to first bathe a puppy. Puppies can be bathed as soon as they are ready and able to go home. Keep in mind, though, that bathing a puppy can be a scary process for them, so you will want to consider a few tricks to make the process more fun. For example, you may bathe them in a smaller bin than a large white tub, run the water prior to baths so that the initial process is not as loud, and provide a treat before and after they complete a job well done in the bath. By creating a safe and fun environment and reflecting an exciting personality for them to mirror, your Labradoodle will have a better likelihood of enjoying bath time from the start. How often you groom your Labradoodle will largely depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Many Labradoodles do not need to be fully groomed more than four times per year. This will ensure that the tangles are removed thoroughly without breaking or damaging the hair. You can find thick bristle combs specifically designed for dogs, or you can even just use one that is designed for human hair as long as you remain cautious and aware of your dog during the grooming process. Brushing with a thin bristle brush or comb before they are dry can cause their hair to break or come out more easily, so waiting to brush them is the best option here. It can lead to repetitive ear infections, and in severe cases, the dog can go deaf or require an operation to change the shape of his ear canal. If your dog is a low or minimal shedder, then the hair inside the ear flap should be regularly plucked. You can also do this at home or ask your groomer to do it during the visits. Keep an eye out for redness or inflammation of the ear flap or inner ear. You can also ask your groomer for tips. Some owners or a veterinary ear cleaner bathe the inner ears of the doodles with cotton wool and warm water. Symptoms include yellow and brown build-up of tartar along the gum line, inflamed gums, and persistent bad breath. Take things slowly in the beginning. Give him lots of praise, and your Doodle will start looking forward to his teeth brushing sessions. Many have flavors that your Doodle will find tasty. The real benefit comes from the actual action of the brush on the teeth. Continue this until he looks forward to licking the paste. It can be instant or might take a few days. Put a small amount on your finger and then rub it gently on one of the big canine teeth at the front of his mouth. The next step is actually to start brushing! Then, gently move the brush backward and forward. Start with his front teeth only and then gradually do the bottom ones. Labradoodles love games, and with a bit of encouragement and patience, brushing teeth can become a fun task for both of you. Grooming for Labradoodle — Nail Trimming The nails of your Doodle must be kept short for the paws to remain healthy. They can also break easily, and this usually happens at the base of the nail, where blood vessels and nerves are located and will require a trip to the vet. If you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, then they are too long. Most have safety guards to prevent you from cutting the nails too short. You can see where the quick ends on a white nail, but not on a dark nail. Clip only the hook-like part of the nail that turns down. Many dogs dislike having their nails trimmed. You can make it a painless procedure by getting him used to having his paws handled when he is a puppy. If you accidentally cut the quick, stop the bleeding with some styptic powder. Some dogs may have tough nails that are hard to trim, but this may be less stressful for your dog, with less chance of pain or bleeding. Frequent bathing removes natural oils and causes the coat to become dry and harsh. Use a mild shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Stand your doodle in a tub, basin, or bath and put cotton balls in his ears to keep them dry inside. Wet him with warm water and apply shampoo from the neck down. Put a small amount of shampoo on your hands and gently wash his head. Rinse your doodle thoroughly with warm water. To keep the soap out of his eyes, put a dampened wash-cloth over his eye. Rub your doodle dry with a towel and then blow-dry if necessary and if he lets you! Then give him a brush or a comb. Grooming for Labradoodle — Cleaning the eyes If your dog has a discharge, if his eyes get a little sticky, or if he has dried deposits in the corner of his eyes, clean them gently with damp cotton wool. Do not use anything else unless instructed to do so by your vet. Ask your groomer to empty the anal glands every time you take your doodle for grooming. If not done then the blockages can lead to infection. Larger Labradoodles usually can express their own anal glands and do not need to have this done. This does not hurt your labradoodle but be sure to tell your groomer if your labradoodle has had a problem with his anal glands in the past or if you have had your Labradoodles anal glands removed. Grooming for Labradoodle — Brushing a Labradoodle Scruffy Doodles will need a good brushing once a week, whereas Doodles with fleece or wool coats will require an intensive grooming regime to avoid having to be clipped short. How to Brush Your Labradoodle Several brushing and combing sessions a week will keep the average Doodles neat and tidy. Daily brushing is even better if possible. Then go through the coat with a comb to make sure you have no mats or knots anywhere. Choosing the Right Brush Choosing the right brush is very important. Scruffy Doodles need pin brushes, which have long, round-ended stainless-steel or chrome-plated pins and a steel comb. Short and medium-coated Doodles will need bristle brushes and a comb. For the fleece and wool coated Doodles, you will need a slicker brush for removing mats and dead hair. Also, a steel pinned comb to make sure that there are no tangles left. There are also rubber curry combs to polish smooth coats and remove dead hair. When brushing, always check for burrs and other stubborn plant material, mats — which most frequently form behind the ears and under the legs — and any cuts or scrapes on the skin itself. Doodles shed, and some shed more than others. Regular brushing will help to keep the shedding under control. Establish a routine that you will follow through with or you will end up with a puppy with nails that may rip or cause problems walking properly, ears that have infections, and coats that are severely matted to the skin and cause severe discomfort for your dog. These are the areas that are most prone to matting. Part the hair and brush from the base of the coat in small sections. Many people only brush the surface of the coat and do not realize the dog is matting very badly next to the skin. Remember, if you cannot maintain basic brushing and grooming on your own, then you will need to budget for using a professional groomer. You should still try to clip nails and clean ears weekly at home, and give your dog a brushing at least once a week. BATHING When you groom your puppy or dog, you will want them to have a clean coat so your scissors and clipper blades work efficiently and do not wear down more quickly. Here are some general, simple tips for basic labradoodle grooming when doing your doodle at home. Eyes: Your Labradoodle should always be able to see well and not have hair hanging and restricting vision or growing up and into the eyes from the bridge of the nose! Using blunt tipped scissors, trim the hair over the bridge of nose and in between eyes so vision is not obstructed. Hair that hangs over the eyes should be trimmed neatly across the brow blending down into the sides of the face. If your dog gets eye gunk, use eye wipes every few days to keep them clean. A Labradoodle with long ear hair does NOT look like the standard for the Labradoodle, it looks more like a Cocker spaniel. Shape the ears and blend hair neatly into the top of the head. This will help prevent infections. You can use a clipper with 10 blade for a good length in this area. If the canal has a lot of hair inside, you will need to pluck it out in very small amounts to prevent irritation. Clean ear canal with solution and then use ear powder to eliminate moisture. Paws: Trim paws in a nicely rounded shape so that hair does not hang over the paw and cannot be walked on. Completely clip hair from in between pads on bottom of feet. This is most easily done with an electric clipper and a 30 blade. Keeping the paws shaped nicely will aid in less debris attaching to feet when outside and being drug into your home. Although you may need to trim errant tufts with a pair of scissors, always avoid shaving the coat completely. Close shaves destroys the hair shafts and endanger your dog. Brush this type of coat with a soft bristle brush, and brush in the direction the hair points. This action will help to distribute the natural oils that protect the hair coat and keep it shiny. These oils also help to prevent leaves, twigs and bits of dirt sticking to the coat. You may find that a dog with a hair coat needs only occasional bathing. The increased thickness of the coat will require a longer brushing period because you have to be sure that you do more than straighten out the top layer. Brushing each layer of fur can be tedious work, but your efforts will pay off in the end. Be prepared to commit a couple of days each week to the task of thorough brushing. Nothing else was as soft and luxurious as this fleece, and whoever owned it was respected enough to be the ruler of the kingdom. On average, your Doodle will visit the groomer three or four times a year, minimum, for coat care, which includes shampooing, trimming and possibly stripping, which is the removal of dead hairs. If you prefer a shorter clip for your dog or you live in a warmer climate, you may decide that more frequent visits are in order. There are breed standard for trimming and clipping. For example, the preferred length for a Doodle coat is three inches, the ears must be trimmed just so, and the muzzle is reduced to an inch in length. A good groomer will know the standard clip for Australian Labradoodles, but if you find a look you like, show your groomer the picture so it can be duplicated on your dog. You can take on some of the care yourself. One of the first things you can do is brush and comb your dog yourself before you visit your groomer. After all, time is money, and the time you save this professional is time he or she can put into the clipping rather than the detangling.
