History of the Breeds German Shepherd German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century as a sheep herding dog. But, because they are very intelligent, trainable, obedient, and strong, they have since moved into many different working roles including police, military, search and rescue, and disability assistance. German Shepherds can have a reputation for being aggressive, but they are more alert and wary than aggressive. They can have a tendency to become overprotective of family and territory. But if socialized and trained properly, this tendency should be highly manageable. German Shepherds are the second-most popular dog in the United States and the seventh-most popular dog in the United Kingdom. Labrador Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, were initially used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs to retrieve fish that had gotten away. Because they are incredibly friendly but also intelligent and therefore easy to train, today Labradors are favored as disability assistance dogs, often helping individuals with blindness, ptsd, mobility issues and autism. Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are intelligent and therefore easy to train, and loving and loyal, so they will quickly feel like part of the family. However, they do need a lot of exercise and attention, so adopting a Sheprador into your family is a commitment. German Shepherds have a reputation for being aggressive, but it is not really deserved. They are natural watchdogs and reserved around strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs that are likely to attack. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which means easy to control. Beagles, Poodles, Boxers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are all extremely friendly dogs as well, many specifically bred to be companions. They do best with active people or families who are full of people to love them. Like all dogs, they will do their best when they are cared for properly. This means training them appropriately, exercising them, keeping them mentally stimulated, and feeding them well. However, as mentioned before, hybrid dogs could have unpredictable coat colors, personalities, and health issues, so buying your puppy from a reliable source is as close as you can get to a clear image about your future dog. Generally, this hybrid can be 26 inches 66 cm tall and can weigh up to 88 pounds 40 kg. Taking into account the height and weight of its German Shepherd and Labrador mix parents, this crossbreed is a medium to a large-sized dog. German Sheprador Personality German Shepradors make excellent family companions and watchdogs. However, once they befriend you, you have a friend for life. These pups hail from a line of two working parents. Their German Shepherd parents regularly work as military, police, and guard dogs, while their Labrador Retriever parents have jobs as hunting and guide dogs. German Shepradors like to work and need to have a job to do, whether big or small. Give them a sense of purpose, and this dog will earn their keep ten fold. They are highly trainable, and thrive on positive reenforcement. Do not leave them alone for long periods. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. German Shepradors are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one hour long walk per day with several shorter walks mixed in. Hiking and other adventurous activities are also recommended. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. They usually have medium length, dense coats, and while they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. This is the instinctive part that always show up first. For example, some babies are more likely to have a good mood or a bad mode. In human terms, these babies are often referred to as 'easier' or 'more difficult'. As Temperament is genetic, it is hard to modify, manipulate or change. It's a reflection of cultivation. Its about social interactions and educational habits. It shapes the personality and only takes its fullest form during adolescence. Subject to the instinctive based temperament, a handler can take some control over the temperament and develop the character of the dog. The success or failure to do this is subject to the drives and trainability. The ZAP-W assesses the instinctive drives and temperament. The ZAP-A assesses the trainability and resulting personality in the grown up dog. The scheme should be used by responsible breeders - and if you plan to get a GSD puppy, ask the breeder whether the parents have been tested for these traits so characteristic of the German Shepherd. Instinct versus Drive The Drive determines the degree to which a dog exhibits Instinctive behaviour Instincts have their roots in survival or reproduction. Examples of Instincts versus Drive it is instinctive for a dog to salivate and eat, but the food drive determines how often, how eagerly and how intensely the dog pursues food. To chase a ball should be instinctive for a German Shepherd - but it relies on the extent of its prey drive and certain hunting instincts assessed in ZAP-W. When most of us think of temperament in dogs, we think of how dogs respond to life situations. We use the word temperament as a catchall term for behavior. When breeders talk about temperament, they are referring to drives, thresholds, traits and instincts that are inherited and innate to the dog. Its behavior can be modified, but its temperament will remain unchanged. EX: A high energy dog cannot learn to be a laid back, low energy dog. The dog can, however, be taught to control its energy. Remember also that the desired temperament defined by a German Shepherd breeder might not match your idea of a good temperament, so clear communication about expectations is crucial. German Shepherd owners should also know that there are some people who can never feel comfortable in the presence of a large dog no matter how polite or well trained it might appear. Unfavorable past experiences or a lack of knowledge about dogs in general can cause some to always to be cautious or uncomfortable around German Shepherds. We must always keep this in mind when our dogs are around other people—be it in our homes, at the vet or at other locations. As we dig deeper into the concept of behavior, we find that temperament is actually just one element of the behavior equation. These factors include character and personality. The terms temperament, character and personality are often used interchangeably, but there are differences. It is biological and instinctive and a function of genetics. It is not developed. Since temperament is present at birth, it is the aspect of behavior that is seen first in developing puppies. Breeders of working dogs—like German Shepherds—breed for dogs with working temperaments. Those born with an innate willingness and natural ability to work. This is why early temperament testing of German Shepherd puppies at or before 8 weeks of age is so important and why reputable breeders temperament test all of their puppies BEFORE they leave for their new homes. Temperament is the part of your German Shepherd's behavior that is genetic i. Because temperament is genetic, it can be very difficult to modify, manipulate or change. Even with expert training and behavioral modification, these genetic tendencies will always be present. What you see on the surface is only a tiny fraction of what lies hidden underneath. When working with—or living with—a dog with a temperament issue, you must always be mindful of what lies below the surface and know when, and how, to prevent the unwanted behavior from surfacing. EX: If a dog does not like children, do not have them around children. Place the dog in a home that sets it up for success. Another example of a temperament trait is prey drive. If your German Shepherd does not show interest in chasing a ball, no amount of training is going to teach the dog to enjoy chasing a ball. Character is both nature and nurture. Because it is not innate, character is not as stable as temperament and it can be changed and modified—especially during early stages of development. EX: If a puppy falls into a bucket of water, it can become fearful of water. This fear is a learned behavior based on environment or life experience and can often be changed or modified. Character is unique to each German Shepherd because their environments and life experiences are unique. A dog can have a individual character trait i. Character is a unique part of your German Shepherd's behavior that is learned and what makes them different from other German Shepherds i. In other words, personality is how your German Shepherd responds to its genetic makeup, learned habits and life experiences. Personality is a combination of thoughts, behaviors, attitudes and habits—all of which are unique to your dog. German Shepherds can be extroverts love to be outside and enjoy the company of others and they can be introverts stay primarily indoors and prefer the company of just one person. An example of a personality trait might be how your German Shepherd responds to riding in a car—the excitement and joy it expresses. Personality is the part of your German Shepherd's behavior that is a response its genetics, learned habits and life experiences. It's their unique way of thinking, feeling and acting i. However, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of getting a puppy with a faulty temperament. Look at how a dog or puppy has been raised, its environment and life experiences. Since behavior can be influenced by environment and life experiences, most German Shepherd breeders cannot guarantee behavioral development. Six Tips for Avoiding Temperament Issues There are things you can do to reduce your risk of getting a German Shepherd with a temperament issue. Make sure their policies are in writing. Second, know and understand the type of puppy you are looking for—high-drive working dog or family companion. If your breeder does not perform temperament tests, does not supply you with written results of these tests, and does not thoroughly explain to you how to interpret the results—find a different breeder. Fourth, do your homework and find a good training facility for you and your new puppy. Fifth, if possible, ask to meet the sire and the dam or at least speak to others who have met the parents and ask for opinions on their temperament. Many puppy buyers fall into the trap of thinking they are experienced enough to change the behavior of a dog. If the puppy you want shows signs of a temperament issue at 8 weeks, most likely, that the problem will be there at 8 years. Litter Evaluation LE. At 8 weeks of age, or just before puppies are selected and transferred to their new owners, reputable breeders perform a Litter Evaluation or LE. The degree and level of evaluation varies among breeders, but the minimum required testing consists of ten basic exercises that are designed to help identify desirable and undesirable traits in puppies. Temperament testing. There are several accepted, readily available temperaments tests to choose from when evaluating a German Shepherd for temperament. Well, due to Google, we actually have one in Turkey, so, pretty far away! As a Golden Retriever breeder, we adopt out a few great pups that we have been able to find some great families for. We have been fortunate to have some great golden adults. They have heritage links to some great well know kennels such as Liberty Kennels from which President Ford's golden came from; Gold Rush Kennels with their english creams and whose owner R. Ann Johnson published a well researched textbook on golden pups; and, also from Golden Glen Kennels that were well know for their dark goldens for their obedience and hunting. These are all our dogs - our pets first and foremost! We have been fortunate in gaining many referrals from past adoptees, as well as some of those getting 2nd, even 3rd, pups for themselves! We greatly appreciate our adoptees - past, present, and future. Our children participate in the breeding a little more each year! We have been doing this for 19 years since .Our adoptees say that our pups are better than they've found from most breeders when they come to pick out their pups. Of just over pups in 19 years, there has been great health history with no cancer. Any health issues have been mostly environmentally caused or some pretty common parasites that we work diligently to ward off for you and the pups. These are our babies, newborns, just like our kids that come home from the hospital. The pups are raised in our home, and socialized with tender loving care, on wooded and meadowed acreage with a pond. She was never bred, but our Golden Retriever adoption service is in honor of her, now residing at the "green tennis ball retirement lodge". This is the first pup, from our first litter! The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail. Breed Standard GRCA Finding a Puppy Finding just the right puppy or adult for your household takes some homework, as not all puppies or breeders are created equal. Not all households can handle raising a puppy it can be a LOT of work!! After You Get Your Puppy Socialize Socialization is about safely exposing your puppy to as many things as you can, at least to those things that will be a part of their life with you. This will help them develop resilience. Exposure should be done in a way that makes the puppy as comfortable as possible. The video below has some great information about socialization. Train There are a wealth of resources available for training your puppy these days. On-line classes are great for exercises you can teach at home and while out and about. In-person classes are great for learning manners and social skills around people and other dogs. Origins of the Malshipoo The Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle hybrid, otherwise known as a Malshipoo, is a combination of three of the most loved dog breeds. This hybrid breed, which originated in the United States of America, is relatively new to the scene but has quickly become a very popular designer dog. This is a multi-generational breed meaning there are a few ways that this particular hybrid can be bred. It is also possible to have a puppy from a Malshipoo and any other parent breeds. These dogs are a small breed that can be quite different from each other in appearance depending on the combination of breeds that their parents are. Some pups may inherit the Poodle coat, some the Maltese and others the Shih Tzu coat. Most puppies, though, tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the Maltese Shih Tzu spectrum.
