You easily tell whether their wavy coats are normal or not by checking their parents and really checking their coats. If you have gotten your dog from a good breeder, chances are they will have the full history of the parents and the coat types. If one or both of their parents had wavy coats, then it could be genetic. When is a wavy coat not normal? Sometimes, however, it will not be because of their genetics or nature and it can be traced to something else. Sometimes goldens with curly hair may suffer from a lack of coat growth and the reason may be a problem with their diet such as: Not getting enough nutrients Too much food Too little food Also, it may be because they are not receiving proper grooming or they are not active enough. If they eat good amounts of high-quality foods that give them the nutrients that their body needs, they are active, they have daily exercise, and they have a proper grooming routine, their coats should be perfectly healthy and normal. Improper Grooming I have talked about the importance of grooming your Golden Retriever in several of my articles, and I will stress it again here. Brushing your Golden Retriever regularly is a must! I highly recommend daily brushing to remove any dirt, debris and tangles. Not only does brushing stimulate blood flow, but it distributes natural oils to help keep the coat soft and shiny. It promotes hair growth as well. Bathing regularly is important as well to keep the coat clean to promote new hair growth. By not brushing or bathing your Golden regularly, you are allowing dirt and debris to build up, as well as oils, which can make the hair appear wavy or curlier than normal. Also, matting can occur which is super painful to your dog. This is especially true around the ears. My Golden Retriever, Ellie gets crimped ears and the hair along her butt becomes super curly. It turns out that the curls actually serve a purpose! But, many owners have issues with matting behind the ears, because hair tends to be curlier there. Again, brushing is important, to avoid mats from forming. Golden Retrievers who are bred for show tend to have longer and finer coats, whereas those bred primarily for hunting tend to have shorter, wavier coats. Regardless of whether wavy or straight, all Golden Retrievers have a double coat, meaning they have a topcoat and an undercoat. Regularly grooming a Golden Retriever can also keep their fur in great condition! It is recommended to brush a Golden Retriever at least once a week and to bathe them every 6—8 weeks depending on how dirty they get and the length of their hair. There are several important steps to take when bathing your Golden Retriever to ensure that their fur comes out looking great after their bath, here are a few key things to consider: Rub over the dry fur first with a wet hand to remove any loose or dead hair. Wednesday, January 2 Vestibular Disease and French Bulldogs Part Two Many adult dogs experience an episode that looks like a seizure or a stroke, and we are concerned that some Frenchies are being euthanized needlessly due to misdiagnosis. Vestibular disease presents suddenly. One minute your dog is running around or chewing a toy, and the next minute she can't stand up or remain standing, or she can't focus her eyes, and they are moving back and forth quickly in a motion called nystagmus. Her head may tilt either immediately or sometime later in the hours or days following the initial event. She may drool. She may panic. If you are like most people, you will almost certainly panic. Try to stay calm and take her to the vet as soon as you can. Deo suffered from vestibular disease. She can't figure out her relationship to the ground and that's why she's staggering. Most episodes are "idiopathic" which means nobody knows what causes them. Step 1: Determine the Neuroanatomic Localization Once a head tilt has been identified, the next step is to perform a complete neurologic examination of the patient to determine if the vestibular dysfunction is peripheral, central or paradoxical. Paradoxical vestibular disease refers to a distinct localization to the cerebellum: specifically, the caudal cerebellar peduncle or the flocculonodular lobe2 that result in slightly different clinical signs than typical peripheral or central vestibular disease. On the contrary, dogs with central vestibular disease are more likely to have a more dull mentation, conscious proprioception deficits and one or more cranial nerve deficits. Postural reaction deficits are the most important indicator of central disease; and deficits in cranial nerve V to XII are the most likely. Below is a brief discussion of some of the more common diseases seen in clinical practice. It is important to note that an intact tympanic membrane does not rule out OMI; in fact, infection most commonly results from 1 a descending infection from otitis externa, 2 hematogenous spread of microorganisms or 3 extension of microorganisms from the pharynx via the auditory tube. Treatment is antibiotic therapy, ideally based on culture and sensitivity, and supportive care. Recognition and prompt treatment of this complication can result in a good prognosis for recovery. Idiopathic Vestibular Disease Idiopathic vestibular disease is reported to be the second most common cause of peripheral vestibular disease in the dog. There is typically a peracute onset with affected animals showing clinical improvement within a few days and near complete resolution within 3 to 4 weeks. Though the cause of idiopathic vestibular disease is unknown, there is consideration that the cause may be due to a viral infection of the vestibular nerve. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism has been implicated as a cause for both peripheral and central vestibular disease in dogs. Thyroid hormone supplementation typically results in improvement within a few months. Ototoxicity Peripheral vestibular signs may develop if the ear has been flushed with any routine cleaning solution if the tympanum is ruptured. Clinical signs of vestibular disease may develop rapidly as soon as 10 minutes. Within 3 days to 3 weeks, central compensation results in gradual improvement of clinical signs; the compensation is maximal after about 3 months. The head tilt, however, may still be obvious and permanent. Chlorhexidine solutions can significantly contribute to ototoxicity and should be avoided if the status of the tympanum is unknown. Aminoglycoside antibiotics parenteral or topical can affect the hair cells, flocculonodular lobe and fastigial nucleus; streptomycin tends to have vestibular effects, whereas neomycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, and vancomycin tend to have more effect on the auditory system. In addition, loop diuretics, cisplatin and propylene glycol have also been implicated as potentially ototoxic. Female, small breed dogs 4 to 8 years of age are predisposed, and diagnosis is based on MRI and, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, with or without infectious disease testing. Treatment involves immune suppression with glucocorticoids plus a chemotherapy drug cytarabine arabinoside, procarbazine or immunomodulating drug cyclosporine, leflunomide. Aggressive long-term treatment is necessary, and the prognosis is guarded. Diagnosis is based on history and clinical signs. Treatment includes cessation of metronidazole therapy and supportive care. It has been shown that diazepam administration 0. A careful history should be taken, including rate and duration of onset, whether the signs have progressed since onset, medications administered, diet, travel history, and existence of any other comorbidities. Physical exam should include a complete otoscopic exam and complete neurological examination to determine if the patient localizes to peripheral or central disease. In patients where peripheral vestibular disease is suspected, additional diagnostic considerations may include myringotomy with culture and sensitivity and a complete thyroid panel thyroxine, free T4 and thyroid-stimulating hormone based on clinical suspicion. For patients that localize to central vestibular disease or those that are not improving with initial therapy, advanced imaging ideally MRI of the head and possible cerebrospinal fluid analysis are highly recommended. Symptomatic treatment is often beneficial as many patients that have vestibular disease experience varied degrees of severity of clinical signs including nausea, anorexia, anxiety, recumbency, circling, falling and rolling. For dogs that are mildly affected, meclizine, an antiemetic and antivertigo drug, is indicated. Other antiemetics such as maropitant, ondansetron or chlorpromazine can also be considered. Patients more severely affected will benefit from parenteral fluid therapy and intensive nursing care in an inpatient setting. During periods of severe vertigo i.
