Remember, the dog in the middle of our list above will look black, but pass the brown gene on to about half of all its offspring. But things are never that simple are they? Because of course some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. And these genes have a different kind of power. The result is a yellow dog But little ee is recessive, and if the dominant E gene is present, it switches off the masking gene. It only takes one big E gene to do this. So the dog will only appear yellow if no big E gene is present at all. There are three possible combinations of eee gene that a dog could inherit. Original Labrador Retriever Color Black is the original, archetypal Labrador color, and genetically the most dominant. Chocolate and yellow puppies were frequently euthanized at birth. Labs with lots of eumelanin pigment in their coat are black. If they have a little less, they appear brown instead. We use letters to tell each place apart — a bit like giving each locus its own zip code! The B locus is home to a pair of genes called B genes. There are two types of B gene your Lab can get in their pair: One we call big B — it contains an instruction to make lots of eumelanin, and causes a black Labrador coat. And one we call little b — it contains an instruction for less eumelanin, and causes a brown or chocolate coat. Big B is a dominant gene, and little b is a recessive gene. Dominant genes to switch off, or override, recessive genes. So dog with BB genes will be black, because he has two genes for a black coat. And a Bb dog will be black too, because the dominant B genethe recessive b gene. Only a dog with a matching pair of bb genes will express the instruction for less eumelanin in their coat, and be brown. Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog with two copies of the b gene will actually look brown. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little b gene to produce chocolate puppies. Like this: Statistically, one quarter of their litter would be chocolate colored. And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. And — you guessed it — we call them E genes. Just like B genes there are two versions of the E gene, big E and little e. Big E is the dominant gene. It does not interfere with the B genes. Little e is the recessive gene. It has the potential to mask the B genes that would otherwise give us black or brown coats. And the result is a yellow dog. How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate Only the little e gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. Not every dog will be right for a given environment and not all potential owners will be right for a given dog. Sometimes we get requests from individuals who attempt to give us a detailed description possibly highly unrealistic of a dog they would like us to provide them with and whilst we do try to find a dog that fits in with the wishes of the prospective new owner, dogs do not "come to order", they are all individual and have their own personalities. Both the dog and its new owners will have much learn from each other and will require time to adjust, but if approached with a practical and realistic attitude, adopting a German Shepherd can be a deeply rewarding experience. First, we will discuss with you over the phone your specific situation, i. We, in turn, can then advise you of a dog that may be suitable for you. If there is not a dog available at that time, we will contact you when there is. Some dogs will have already been neutered or spayed by their previous owner. Anyone who breeds in the current economic climate is in our opinion, irresponsible. Following adoption we ask that all new owners insure their new dog as soon as possible - Vet fees can be very expensive! A GSD makes a wonderful friend and family pet but If you haven't had one before it is important to understand that this is a working breed and they can be 'difficult' to the uninitiated. A GSD needs a lot of exercise, some good basic training and companionship - they like to be with you. They may also board them with kennels or dog sitters until someone can adopt and take them home. Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a public charity non-profit and all-volunteer rescue that works to rescue dogs from risky situations and find them a loving and safe home. They are not a shelter but instead keep the GSDs in foster homes. This rescue initiative does not take in stray dogs and will only take GSDs surrendered by their legal owners. BrightStar German Shepherd Rescue is another all-volunteer non-profit organization working to save German Shepherd Dogs by caring for them or finding them foster care until they can be adopted. The rescue shelter is based in Rochester, New York. They receive dogs from shelters or owners who can no longer care for their dogs and place them in foster homes. They also study the GSDs for some time before making them available for adoption. They welcome stray dogs and receive those transferred from other organizations and those from shelters and owners who surrender their dogs. Search Pet Adoption Websites Apart from the rescue groups listed in breed club networks, you can also search adoption sites, filtering your search to focus on the German Shepherd breed. Here are three examples of adoption sites you can target: Petfinder is an online directory of adoption organizations and animal shelters across the US, Mexico, and Canada and a database of animals in need of a home. Adopt a Pet is a non-profit adoption advertising charity site with headquarters in Indian Hill Blvd. The site helps homeless pets in shelters to find a new owner and home. You can search the site by specifying the breed, location, and distance you are looking for the pet, sex, and age. Dogtime has its headquarters in Los Angeles and has a long history of rescuing pets, among other initiatives. Adopt Through Animal Welfare Societies Animal welfare societies are non-profit organizations working for the welfare of animals in the light of animal rights and ethics. With a shelter or rescue where you can adopt a German Shepherd identified, you can now proceed to step 4 — making contact by phone and visit. Contact and Visit the Chosen Shelter or Rescue Center Your search for the right place to find your adoptive German Shepherd will probably conclude with a phone call and a visit. This should be geared at determining if it is the right place to adopt from and if a German Shepherd you have identified through your search is the right dog for you. When you visit, you should be keen to notice signs of unreliable rescues or shelters. Here are a few indicators to look for when determining if a rescue or shelter is reliable. Legal Registration As entities interested in the welfare of homeless dogs, reliable and genuine dog rescues and shelters should be legally registered as a C 3 organization. This means that, by the US International Revenue Code, these organizations are exempt from federal tax. A Long History of German Shepherd Rescue Without implying that new shelters and rescue centers cannot be reliable and reputable, one with many years of existence has made valuable experiences about adoption and separated the best adoption practices from not too good ones. For example: A shelter with years of experience may want to visit your home and ensure the German Shepherd will have a safe and loving home before letting you complete the adoption process. These questions may cover issues such as: Whether the dog was a stray or surrendered by its legal owner and why. If the dog has undergone all the recommended vaccines and tests. If the dog has any health and behavioral issues. As such, they will require you to follow certain procedures and sign an adoption contract. Reliable shelters and rescue centers: Will not allow you to adopt a dog without any written contract. Giving you a German Shepherd without a written contract should be a clear red flag. Meeting with the prospective adoptive GSD is only arranged after that. In whichever step you visit the center, the expectation is that you will identify your future dog. Introducing the Dog to Your Family Introducing your adoptive German Shepherd to the family including other pets you may already have can be done in two ways. Some shelters will just proceed with a home visit. Once this is done and they are sure that the GSD and you are a good fit, then signing the adoption contract follows. Adoption contracts may have clauses requiring you to return the dog to the shelter if, for any reason, you are unable to take care of it. At last, you can now move to the final exciting step — bringing your dog home! Make sure you have purchased everything you will need, such as a comfy bed or crate, toys, leash, collar, harness, bowls, food, and treats.
