Bernedoodle History Bernedoodles is another designer breed that became popular in the last 15 to 20 years and is the result of crossing the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Poodle. Despite starting as a mixed breed , efforts have been made, especially by Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels, to develop a consistency between the puppies. Since that time, continued efforts have seen more consistent breeding and owners can choose from a number of different generations including: F1 Generation — Result of a mating between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. F2 Generation — Result of a mating between two F1 Bernedoodles. The reason for the generations is to move toward a breed standard and breed acceptance in kennel clubs. In general, what you are looking for is a fluffy, teddy bear of a dog; however, the overall build and appearance will range depending on the generation of the breed and if the breeder is breeding more for a Poodle look or more for a Bernese look. In general, Bernedoodles are a square dog that should be the same height as they are long. They should have a thick, long, and straight muzzle and the skull should be rounded in shape. The ears should hang and be large and wide. The overall look should be of an athletic dog with a straight topline. If they are taking after their Poodle parent, Bernese Mountain Dog Poodles will have a thin build but will be a lot thicker with a wide chest if they are taking after the Bernese Mountain Dog parent. Bernedoodle Size Bernedoodle size really depends on what type of Poodle was used in the mix and the breed can actually be found in three sizes ranging from small to large. These are: Toy Bernedoodle — This is a result of a toy poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog breeding and toy Bernedoodles should range in height from 12 to 17 inches and in weight from 10 to 24 pounds. Miniature Bernedoodle — The result of breeding a Miniature Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog, the miniature Bernedoodle is between 18 to 22 inches in height and 25 to 49 pounds in weight. Standard Bernedoodle — The result of breeding a standard Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog, the standard Bernedoodle should stand between 23 to 29 inches tall and should weigh between 70 to 90 pounds. It is important to note that the Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle is not hypoallergenic unless it has the Poodle coat, and, even then, it is not always hypoallergenic. Generally, the Bernedoodle has a coat that is long and wavy with an unkempt look to them that makes them look like disheveled teddy bears. The coat should consist of two coats, a dense, short undercoat, and a longer topcoat. In addition to the wavy coat, you can find Bernedoodles with a tight, curly coat that is similar to a Poodle; again with the undercoat and topcoat. Bernese Mountain Dog Poodles are primarily found in only three colors; however, there is a wide variation to markings. The breed can be black, black and white, black and brown, or tri-colored with black, white, and brown. Bernedoodle Grooming As with many mixed breeds, grooming can differ depending on the coat type inherited from the parents. Curly coats require brushing daily unless you decide on clipping the coat short, then it is done every few weeks, roughly every six to eight weeks. For the wavy coated Bernedoodle, the coat should be brushed once or twice a week. They are a low shedding breed but they do have periods of heavy shedding where they blow their coat. During this time, the breed requires brushing two or three times a week. With bathing, the Bernedoodle should only be bathed when it is necessary to prevent drying out the coat. In general, once every few months is enough to keep the Bernedoodle clean. Teeth should be brushed on a weekly basis, and it is important to check the ears weekly as well to prevent ear infections. Nails should be trimmed when necessary, usually once or twice a month. They are a very affectionate breed who loves to be with their people. While the Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle loves their family, they tend to be reserved with strangers and are often wary. The breed is excellent with children of all ages, but the larger Bernedoodles can be a bit clumsy, so it is important to take care when they are around young children. Our Generations of Bernedoodles Depending on the parent dogs, there are many genetic variations of Bernedoodles. We have Standard, Miniature, and Tiny Bernedoodles. Our Bernedoodles come in three breed sizes - Standard, Miniature, and Tiny. Our F1 Standard Bernedoodles will usually stand inches at the shoulder and weigh or more pounds. Most standard Bernedoodles are in the pound range. Females are usually smaller than males. Our F1 Mini Bernedoodles usually stand between 17 and 22 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 25 to 65 pounds with most of them weighing lbs. Again females tend to be smaller than males. They are sized similar to our F1 Minis. F1B Tiny Bernedoodles usually stand between 12 and 17 inches tall and weigh between 15 and 25 pounds. Again, these puppies tend to be more hypoallergenic and usually less shedding than the F1 Bernedoodles. Differences between male and female Bernedoodles. We are often asked if there is a difference between boys' and girls' personality. Our experience is that there is a lot more difference from puppy to puppy in a litter even in the same gender than there is between boys and girls. Males might tend to be more affectionate and goofy, but also a bit more stubborn while females can be more independent but easier to train and less stubborn. The differences are actually quite subtle, and both males and females make absolutely amazing pets. Temperament is more important than gender when looking for the puppy that is the right fit for you. Male Bernedoodles tend to be larger than females, but beyond that there is not a major difference between the genders. Our Bernedoodles have various coat colors and types. Coat colors are generally a combination of both of the parents' breeds. Almost all of our F1 puppies have the beautiful tri-colored markings of the Bernese. This tri-colored coat is a less common variation and is generally the most sought after. You will see the most variation in color in our F1b puppies. One of the huge attractions to the bernedoodle is its hypoallergenic coat. Bernedoodle coats can vary in thickness, consistency, and color. In an F1 first generation breeding, you might get a puppy with a coat that looks more similar to a Poodle and get another puppy with a coat more like a Bernese Sometimes even within the same litter. While most of our bernedoodles have minimal to no shedding, a curly, Poodle-type coat will shed less than the one that is more straight, like the Bernese Mountain Dog. We encourage a more curly coat for people that have allergy issues. If you have intense allergies you should consider a curlier coated F1 or an F1B puppy. Bernedoodle coats are generally put into three main categories - Curly, Wavy, and Straight. Please note when looking at the examples below that the appearance of our Bernedoodles is greatly affected by whether they are groomed and how short the coats are if groomed. Be sure to consider this when looking at the pictures. The curls on this coat are usually tight with a soft texture much like what you would see on a Poodle. Curly coats may still shed, but they shed the hair upon themselves rather than on your floor. Unfortunately, this shedding upon themselves is what makes it necessary for them to be brushed daily and trimmed frequently. The curly coated Bernedoodle is usually the most suitable for owners who have an allergy to dog dander. This coat is very free-flowing and often has a lightly kinked or wavy appearance. Most people with allergies to dog dander i. Our Labradoodles don't shed fur. Furthermore, the coat of a fleece Labradoodle is said to be the easiest to maintain. This low shedding coat should be brushed out at least once a week. Fleece coated Labradoodles should feel soft to touch. The curls within the fleece can be slightly wavy to noticeably wavy. Kemp a course hair is often found around the eyes of a fleece coated Labradoodle. The tightness of the curl purely depends on the Labradoodles genetics. While some wool coated Labradoodles have tight curls that appear similar to the coat of their Poodle parent, others have a loose curled coat. If you own a curly coated Labradoodle, it is recommended that you groom your dog once a day. Alternatively, you may opt Labto shave your dog's coat shorter so that it can be easily maintained. Allowing your dogs coat to grow excessively leads to matting and in turn pain for your Labradoodle. The shedding coat is not desirable in this breed which is generally the result of a hair coated Labradoodle. In terms of grooming your Labradoodle, it is recommended to book them in to see a trained dog groomer every 6 to 8 weeks. This applies to any coat type. Although hair coats do not require as much maintenance, the hair inside your dogs ears should be plucked regularly to avoid infection and build up. Furthermore, your dogs nails will need to be clipped regularly especially if you only have grass and no concrete. The deposit is non-refundable but can be transferred to another litter in the future if available. The rest of the money is paid at 6 weeks after the puppies have been microchipped, vaccinated and vet checked. You can come and view your puppy at 6 weeks. I think he's about 7 years old, but I'm not sure. Jordan is a very special dog. Like a lot of dogs, Jordan was rescued from a very bad situation. He was extremely emaciated, he had no hair, covered in parasites, and extremely afraid of everything. He could barely walk when I got him. I have owned him for about 7 months now, and he has all his hair back too much, actually , has gained a lot of weight, is MUCH happier, but most importantly he is no longer afraid of people. With spending a ton of time with his socialization , training , and guidance , he is now a well-balanced dog. I don't exactly know what happened to him before me, but it doesn't matter anymore, anyway. Jordan did have all sorts of bad behaviors at first due to his neglect which included: excessive barking, digging, pulling, jumping, etc. Typical "bad dog" behavior. But with all the walks and adventures we go on he is not only well-balanced, but truly happy. I am his "Guardian Angel. He gives hugs and kisses. He is my suction-cup when we are outside together; he has to be by me always. I love it! He is happiest when the whole family is out in the backyard playing together. He is very much a part of our family, even stays inside now, after some time housetraining. He was never aggressive toward anything or anyone. He loves his "girlfriend"! Before I got her she had never been out other than a quick potty break on a 4-foot lead. She also had been through a lot of owners. She's great inside now, though! With all that work she's perfect inside! I can leave a whole plate of food on the floor for hours while I'm not in the room and she won't touch it. No accidents, never chewed on anything, very quiet. She's my angel. Her favorite activity would be eating. She's loves food. This is a dog who has taught me to be strong, all good things are worth fighting for, never give up, and you never get the dog you want, always the dog you need. I cannot say I follow his methods, because I have been training my dogs this same way before I ever heard of him. I also train therapy dogs, and guide dogs. Not certified, or anything.
