If there is a behavior your puppy exhibits that you may think is cute while your puppy is small, you need to think ahead and determine if this behavior will be acceptable from an adult dog. Consistency is the most important tool for training a puppy in their first year and beyond. Each family member needs to use the same techniques and commands so as not to confuse your puppy. It is important to remember that a puppy associates a reward or a disciplinary action with its behavior in the past 3 seconds. Waiting longer than 3 seconds to reward or discipline is very confusing to a puppy. You cannot stop this behavior, but you can certainly direct your puppy to chew upon acceptable items until this phase passes at about a year of age. The only way puppies know how to play is the typical wrestling, biting, chasing, tackling, pulling, and nipping they do with littermates. In the absence of littermates, you and your family suddenly become the littermates. Repeat this same disciplinary action a total of three times in a row. Every now and then, a particularly feisty puppy will become more excited by this disciplinary action and need a more distinct disciplinary measure. This next action needs to be initiated quickly. This will be uncomfortable for your puppy. When behavior meets with uncomfortable consequences, the behavior will stop. With all this being said, the absolute best remedy is for you to arrange daily play dates with other puppies or young dogs. The bottom line is that your puppy needs to have active playtime each day. Jumping — Your puppy will jump on you to get your attention. This may seem innocent while your puppy is small, but Grandma may not appreciate being knocked over by the full grown untrained dog. Make sure you do not reward the puppy for the act of getting down as this will enforce the behavior of jumping up only to be told to get down for a reward. This is not a sign of aggression unless you allow this to go undisciplined over time. You need to actively discourage any and all growling directed at you. If your puppy growls at you when you get close to the food bowl, immediately remove the food bowl and feed the puppy out of your hand. Do not stop brushing until the puppy accepts this without growling. Each puppy needs to learn its place in the pecking order of a family. Obviously, they need to be the lowest on the totem pole. If allowed to be boss, growling is a normal thing for a puppy to exhibit when showing its dominance. Each family member must establish they are boss. This includes young children who are timid or fearful of the puppy. Remember that any behavior you allow as a puppy is then extremely difficult to curb later in life. If you do not wish to have your adult dog on the furniture, do not sit on the sofa holding your puppy. They will usually have the sturdy build of a Poodle with all of the elegance that you would expect from a Maltese. Most of these dogs are very small which means that they are fragile. They would do best in a house with older children or without big dogs so that they will not get hurt. Height and Weight The parent that has the most influence on the size of the Maltese Poodle mix is the Poodle parent. Since the Poodle can be a toy or miniature there is a large size gap. They normally reach between inches in height. As for weight they can be as little as 5 pounds but as much as 20 pounds. This can result in black, white, chocolate, gray or apricot colored. They can be these colors or any shade or dilution of these colors. Thick and curly is typically the most popular as this coat is hypoallergenic. They can be great therapy dogs because of their friendly dispositions and caring nature. Both the Poodle and the Maltese histories go back to old Royalty. Depending on the physical location, their name has several different spellings: Malt-a-poo, Malt-i-poo and Malt-e-poo. They are very intelligent and quick to learn which allows them to be trained easily but make sure that they have the mental stimulation they need. Easily adapt to any home as long as they are inside since they love being around their owners. A true Maltipoo is a dog that is a mix of a pure Poodle and a pure Maltese. Although they are tiny lapdogs that look innocent, they get very attached to their people and can think they are a lot bigger than they are. They are extremely affectionate towards their families wanting nothing more than to make you smile. Poodles are known for their energy and intelligence. So if your dog has more dominant Poodle genes they will be more energy filled and ready to play. Whereas if you dog has more dominant Maltese genes then it will be more laid back and willing to be your couch potato. Because of this energy they will need mental stimulation in order to keep them out of mischief — when these dogs are bored they will chew and bark. They are constantly looking for praise from their owners and are intelligent so training them is very easy. These pups make are great for first-time dog owners because of their trainability and loving personalities. They are also great dogs for apartment living since they do not need a lot of room to run around in. The Maltese Poodle mix is a fantastic dog for a family. It is known as a people pleaser and will do whatever it takes to make its puppy parents happy. The breed is a great dog when it comes to families but is also a great dog for a person who lives on their own or an elderly person that needs a friend. Because they are eager to please their owners, they are easy to train and good for teaching responsibility. Caring for the Maltipoo Dog This breed is very versatile. They are not very picky about which activities they play in. However if they have no mind stimulation they tend to get a little antsy and might bark to get attention. Read on to learn how to care for this little teddy bear… Exercise Requirements These dogs are best kept inside as they are very small and do not need lots of exercise. They are not opposed to going outside but their coat and skin mixed with heat can lead to quick dehydration or heat exhaustion. Therefore playing with them inside is the best option — this is why they make great apartment dogs. Although they do not need a ton of exercise, it is best to take them on one or two short walks a day to ensure they are getting enough exercise to stop weight gain. Number of Walks Per Day: .Grooming and Shedding They are prone to dry skin if washed too much so make sure not to bath them more than once a month. The coat should be kept around inches long, but there is nothing wrong with completely shaving them down if preferred. Getting their hair trimmed every months should result in the coat staying around an inch and a half long. Unkept hair can cause health issues so keep on top of it. These dogs are allergy friendly and do not shed much, so they will not leave lots of hair around your house. Feeding and Diet These pooches can have a mix of dry and wet dog food. Hard dry food can be good for their teeth, but wet food is commonly more enjoyed. As the Maltipoo Dog tends to become sick on an empty stomach, always make sure they have food accessible to them. Just make sure to monitor their weight closely. This should be spread out over the entire day and not given per meal. This is an enlarged heart that does not fit as it should. This trait of theirs could result in separation anxiety especially when left alone for prolonged periods, making them resort to destructive activities like self-harm. They are great alarm dogs like their Poodle parent, with a sense of alertness, barking constantly to warn their owners about all that is happening around them. However, these canines lack the aggression of the Maltese and do not fit the bill of a guard dog. Like the Miniature Poodle and Maltese, the Maltipoo is also not suited for homes with kids below the age of 6 because of their small and delicate nature. Moreover, these dogs might even be snappy like their Maltese parent especially when teased or bothered by the kids. They however, share a comfortable rapport with other canines and pets even if they are not raised with them. Care Exercise Though active and energetic, the Maltese Poodle mix would do well with a moderate amount of exercise, needing a brisk walk twice a day, coupled with sufficient playtime outside or even within the house. If their physical needs are met well, these small-sized dogs would perfectly adjust to apartment living. Grooming They shed less just like their parents, needing a little amount of grooming. Other hygiene needs include brushing their teeth twice or thrice a week, trimming the nails one or two times a month as well as cleaning its eyes to avoid tear stains and ears on a routine basis.
