A loving forever home with a secure fence and another dog in the home She wants to be your "All-American Girl! Carrie Underwood is so sweet and adorable. She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. She still has her moments of shyness around Foster Dad, but will now come voluntarily to the couch to sit beside him for attention. She's definitely gained lots of confidence. Carrie will need a home with another dog, preferably one who enjoys the same activity level. Carrie still has some shy moments but she is ready for her furever home, and she will steal the heart of anyone who wants to add a sweet yet energetic member to their family. Thank you to the following generous donors currently supporting Carrie's care: Amanda S. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament Few breeds so richly deserve their popularity as does the Labrador Retriever. When trained, the breed is obedient and amiable and tolerates the antics of children, other dogs, and other pets. The Lab is a calm house dog, playful yard dog, and intense field dog, all on the same day. Labs are eager to please, enjoys learning, and excel in obedience. It is a powerful breed that loves to swim and retrieve. Labradors need daily physical and mental challenges to keep occupied. A bored Lab can get into trouble! Upkeep Labradors are active and sociable dogs. They need daily exercise, preferably in the form of retrieving and swimming. Owners with swimming pools either must fence them out or be prepared to share the pool with dogs. The Lab coat sheds water easily. Weekly brushing is needed to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued. It was also in England that the breed earned its reputation as an extraordinary retriever of upland game. Initially, black labs were favored over yellow or chocolate colors. By the early s, the other colors had become more accepted. The popularity of this breed has grown steadily until the Labrador Retriever became the most popular breed in America in and remains so today. Related Content. After all, people continue to shop rather than adopt. While you may not be able to change the decisions that others make, you can do your part to stop overcrowding and euthanasia in shelters by making the honorable decision to adopt. Adopting is not something that should be taken lightly. You want to make sure that your new furry friend will be a good fit for your home and your family. Choosing the right breed is the first step in making the right choice. Labrador Retrievers make an excellent addition to nearly any family, but there are some things you need to know about them. Labrador Retrievers Need Time 2. Will You Have Space? They Have An Appetite 4. Puppies Can Be Destructive 5. Labs Are Known For Longevity 6. Separation Anxiety Is Possible 7. Messes Will Occur 8. Labrador Retrievers Need Time Labs make awesome friends, but they need a lot of time and attention. If you live an extremely busy life, you may want to consider adopting a different breed. Labs tend to enjoy homes that offer companionship and socialization. Space is another thing to take into consideration. Labrador Retrievers can range from medium to large size. They also have an abundance of energy. However, someone living in a small space such as an apartment should walk their little buddy at least twice per day. They Have An Appetite Being a larger breed, they tend to have quite an appetite. Adopting a Lab means making a financial commitment. Labrador Retriever puppies are incredibly adorable. However, puppies from this breed are known to chew shoes, plants, and just about everything else they can sink their teeth into. Training at early ages is extremely important when it comes to curving these behaviors. Believe it or not, your furball will likely be around for about 15 years. Amazing genetics make this breed incredibly healthy and robust. When this breed is left alone for long periods of time, separation anxiety becomes a real possibility. Every dog reacts to their anxiety differently, but the outcome is usually not a good one. Messes Will Occur The natural playfulness of a Lab can quickly lead to a mess. Most consider playtime to be all of the time. Labs shed and they shed a lot, but this is a small price to pay to have such an awesome BFF. However, their large size combined with their incredible amount of energy can lead to accidental injuries with small children. The chances of this being due to aggression are nearly zero. Instead, this rare occurrence is usually caused by the innocent desire to play. Other than that, Labs are known for making a great addition to a family with or without children. Labrador Retrievers Are Easy To Train Labs are incredibly intelligent and their drive to please their humans is remarkably strong. This leads to them being extremely easy to train. Instead, they are happy to try again. With a little time and work, you can teach your furry friend to do just about anything, hence the reason they are commonly used as service dogs. This is what allows them to be such great swimmers, stay cool in the summer, and maintain body heat in the winter. Believe it or not, due to the oils naturally present in their undercoat, you can actually over bathe them. Washing too frequently can lead to dry skin, itchiness, and even flaking. Overall, Labrador Retrievers offer way more benefits than inconveniences. One thing is for certain. They offer loyalty that creates a bond like no other. Today could be the day you meet your new BFF and it could also be the day that you save a life. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and give a fur baby the home they deserve! Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Cairnoodle Highlights The Cairnoodle loves to play, but at the end of a long day they make a great lap dog, too. The Cairnoodle is a fairly easy breed to train. Consistency is key when training this breed. Daily training sessions that last minutes any longer can cause disinterest and backfire as far as creating progress are key to helping this breed retain good manners and stay on track. Basic obedience classes may help if you are a first-time dog parent. The Cairnoodle is usually a good fit for beginner dog parents. Without proper stimulation, the Eskipoo will grow bored and frustrated, regardless of how much love there is for them. Additionally, this breed can develop separation anxiety. Dog parents who are frequently home or able to bring pups to work are a good match for this breed, although not a requirement. This breed still craves mental stimulation they can find through training, scentwork activities, and other forms of enrichment. These breeds can be prone to behaviors humans find frustrating, like excessive barking and chewing. When understimulated, they will make it endlessly clear they are bored. Cairnoodle History The Cairn Terrier is descended from ancient breed of Scotch Terrier that was only developed as a separate breed in the 19th century. At the time, they were primarily distinguished from their Scotch Terrier brothers by their coat color. In the s, the Cairn Terrier was established as a wire-haired small Terrier of the Skye group in various colors, with the exception of white, which was designated for the West Highland Terrier. The Cairn is often confused for the Scottish Terrier, but the Scottie holds a more diverse genetic makeup, having a large gene pool history. The Cairn Terrier was limited to the Isle of Skye. The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed specifically for hunting waterfowl. Most historians agree that the Poodle originated in Germany, but developed into their own breed in France. Many believe that the breed is the result of crosses between several European water dogs, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian water dogs. Although the Standard was used for duck hunting, the smaller varieties had use as well — while many kept them as lapdogs, they were also talented truffle hunters. The Poodle Club of America was founded in , but disbanded shortly thereafter. Poodle enthusiasts reestablished the club in .Cairnoodle Size The Cairnoodle is a small-sized mixed breed. They have no breed standard, so their coats may be found in a variation of colors from their combination of parent breeds. They will usually have a thick but curly-haired coat, along with floppy, curly-haired ears. Some individuals may favor their Cairn Terrier parent and have less curls, more of a wiry texture. They will often be — tan, brown, or black, but they may appear in other colors. Without exposure, this devoted breed has the potential to become reactive to perceived threats. Training any dog consistently when young will ultimately improve their quality of life and yours as an adult. Cairnoodle Health If the Cairnoodle originates from a responsible breeder, they are often healthy. However, there are some genetic predispositions towards health issues to be aware of with this crossbreed. Hip Dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability Cairnoodles are energetic dogs. However, most of them inherit the laidback nature of the Poodle, requiring little exercise. On a scale of , the Cairnoodle gets a respectable score for energy. This dog inherits their intelligence from both of their parent breeds, making them easy to train. However, house training these dogs can be challenging for many owners. The lifespan of the Cairnoodle is slightly above the average lifespan of most dogs. This is mostly because Cairnoodles are quite healthy. Being designer dogs, they suffer fewer health complications than purebreds. They also come from a relatively healthy lineage, as their parent breeds are not prone to many diseases. For these reasons, the Cairnoodle scores well for lifespan and health. Cairnoodles are affectionate. However, they like being the center of attention and exhibit an interesting mix of sensitivity and stubbornness, inherited from the Poodle and Terrier, respectively. These traits give them an excellent score for sociability. They have an alias. The Cairnoodle is also known as the Poocan. They have ancient history. The Poodle, the other parent of the Cairnoodle, has ancestors that date back thousands of years. Poodles are sweet, sensitive, and demand attention. Poodle owners need to stimulate their dogs mentally and physically because these dogs are known for being extremely intelligent and agile. They get along well with children and other pets. On the other hand, the Cairn Terrier is feisty and a bit stubborn. They have an instinct to burrow into the ground, and if they are not trained well as a puppy, they will exhibit these traits in adulthood. The Terrier does not get along well with other dogs. With mixed breeds, it is difficult or near impossible to predict temperament even with dogs of the same litter. That said, most Cairnoodle dogs exhibit a healthy mix of the two parents. If your Cairnoodle leans more toward their Terrier side, training them will require you to be firm. If they lean more toward their sensitive Poodle parent, training should be positive , or else they will withdraw from you and exhibit negative behavior. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are prone to separation anxiety , and when bored, they will get destructive. Chewing on upholstery and pooping in shoes are common examples, but their intelligence can inspire even more devious deeds. However, their gentle temperament allows them to get along well with kids and family members. Their small size makes it unlikely that they will knock over children or elderly relatives. However, your Cairnoodle will get along well with your other pet because it has no natural prey instinct. A post shared by ECHO life. Diet, exercise, grooming, and training will influence the lifespan of your pet. One and a half cups of food, split into two or three servings a day, will be enough even for the most active of dogs. But you must keep an eye on their weight. Obesity can bring a host of health issues for your dog that include diabetes, decreased liver function, and damaged joints. If you are unsure of what to feed your dog, visit the vet. They will instruct you on the right diet and when to feed your pet. As a mixed breed , their behavior is difficult to predict. If your Cairnoodle takes after the Poodle, they might be mellow and laidback, requiring only moderate exercise and mental stimulation. If they take after the Cairn Terrier, they will enjoy being outdoors and will require at least an hour of exercise every day. Chew toys will also keep your dog entertained indoors. Most Cairnoodles do not inherit the stubbornness of the Cairn Terrier, but the trainer still needs to be firm and consistent to effectively train the dog. As with all other dogs, the sooner training is done, the easier it will be and the better the results will be. However, their fur needs to be brushed daily to avoid matting and tangling. Do not bathe your dog unless you deem it necessary, and even then, use a gentle dog shampoo. Also, make a point of taking them to the groomer once every six weeks. Minor Conditions. Poocan Description The Cairnoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Cairn Terrier and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She was named Bryn after her brindle coloring, which has changed from a darker grey when I first got her, to a very light grey, and now she is getting some cream to her coat. Her coat is very soft, I expected her to be more wire haired. She is four months old and weighs 7 lbs. I am expecting her to get to be about 12 lbs. She has a personality and a mind of her own! She isn't afraid of anything. She is curious about everything, always trying to get into things and find out what she is missing out on. Her favorite thing to do is to learn new tricks; she is incredibly smart. She is only four months old and already knows how to sit, lie down, dance, shake, give kisses, and to walk on two legs. She's learning how to crawl, play dead and sit pretty currently. I take her on walks every day , just to get some of that energy out! She excels in her puppy training class, which has certainly calmed her down. She is always ready to play, even if she's exhausted! She loves playing with other dogs, no matter what size they are and loves children, esp. I'm pretty sure the milk on their chins lures her in. She pretty much loves anything that moves. Her favorite toy is actually a cat toy, which had batteries that she can chase around. Overall she is a very lovable, well behaved, but very mischievous puppy. I am SO happy that I found her. My life has completely changed because of this little one! She is extremely independent, but does love to be around people all the time. She has the stubborn terrier personality and she loves attention. She is very intelligent and has been a wonderful addition to our family. The first picture was taken when she was about 3 months and the second was taken at 6 months. She is very smart and has lots of energy. We are in training right now to be a therapy dog. These pups are perfect for families or single-person households that would like to add a furry little friend to their homes. They are affectionate and loving and are guaranteed to make wonderful pets. Their friendly nature also makes them great dogs to have if you have children or other pets. A cross between a Poodle and a Cairn Terrier, this little guy is all set to become your new best friend forever! These pups may have existed in nature long before any intentional efforts to bring the Cairn Terrier and the Poodle began, and no breeder has come forward with the claim of having crossed the two breeds together for the first time. Chances are, these pups came onto the scene sometime in the s since that is when Doodle popularity truly took off. Personality and Temperament This pup makes an absolutely wonderful family pet thanks to its friendly nature and its ability to get along well with children. The Cairnoodle is an incredibly devoted dog and loves to love its owners! This pup loves spending time with its human pack and may develop separation anxiety issues if left alone for too long. They require attention and love, and if they feel there is a lack of it, they may become overly anxious or depressed. The Cairnoodle is also a rather alert dog and will be quick to let you know with a bark or two if they spot something suspicious. This makes them great watchdogs, although they may not offer much when it comes to protection. Early socialization is important to ensure your pup grows up to have a well-rounded personality. If you want to get a fair idea of the kind of dog your puppy will grow up to be, try spending time around the Cairn Terrier or Poodle parent. Their personalities are usually good indicators of the temperament your pup will grow up to have. Cairnoodle Size On average, the Cairnoodle can grow up to be anywhere between 10 to 15 inches tall and weigh about 13 to 20 pounds. Cairnoodle Health Generally speaking, the Cairnoodle is a pretty healthy pup, owing mainly to the hybrid vigor that most first-generation mixed breed pups possess. However, the true guarantee of a healthy dog is healthy parents, so be sure to get health clearances of both parent pooches from the breeder. Also, stay vigilant and do not get puppies from breeders that cross dogs that are younger than 2 years of age since that is when most genetic illnesses develop. Schedule regular veterinary visits so that you can rest assured that your Cairnoodle is in the best of health. Some issues that your dog may suffer from include bloat, epilepsy, eye issues, hip dysplasia, liver disease, and skin issues. While the physical stimulation may be low-intensity, such as a short walk or a fun game of fetch, it is nonetheless incredibly important. If the Cairnoodle is forced to sit with all that pent-up energy, they may become destructive. This is also a very smart dog, which means it needs to stay mentally engaged, so it is a good idea to provide some toys and trinkets to your pooch. When it comes to training, these dogs are a delight. They are quick to pick up commands and desired behaviors despite their independent nature. However, potty training may be a little difficult. Do not free-feed as this may lead to issues such as bloat and unnecessary weight gain. Coat Color, Types, Shedding Cairnoodles are low-shedding dogs with short and curly coat. Cairnoodle Grooming Cairnoodles have coats that can easily get tangled, so be sure to brush their coats regularly to keep them free from any knots or matted fur. Their head is wide, and their ears are small and erect. Their body is compact, their legs are short, and they have a natural, high-carried tail. More about Cairn Terrier Mix poodles Cairn terriers poodle mix puppies have a fluffy undercoat, but their hairy, moisture outer coat gives them a sassy look. Black, red, brindle, and silver are some of the colors available. Not only does the Cairn Terrier toy poodle mix grow in physical appearance; they also develop some of the personality traits. Digging, barking, and chasing are all high on his list of enjoyable games, as they are with any dog of the breed. He loves being around the house, watching the kids, leading you from place to place, and greeting visitors at the front door. He is also well-known for his sensitivity. He despises being chastised and is irritated when you are dissatisfied with him. A variety of factors influence temperament, including genetics, practice, and social development. Puppies with a good disposition are adventurous and fun, and they love approaching people and being carried. Choose a puppy that is in the center of the pack, rather than one that is abusing his littermates or hiding in the corner. Socialization ensures that your Cairn puppy develops into a well-rounded adult dog. They are not, however, the cuddly kind. They love to explore, dig, and run around. Despite their fear of being cuddled, cairn terriers are still common household pets. Cairn Terriers poodle mix puppies are intelligent, loving, athletic, and faithful dogs. They make excellent companions because of their strong instincts to dig, work, and hunt. A cairn would make an excellent pet if properly cared for, groomed, and conditioned. Though there is nothing unique to the breed that may be causing the foul odor, there are a few items that are common to all dogs that could be the cause. The enjoyment of all things gross is one of the most perplexing canine habits. Our dogs are intrigued by things that make our stomachs churn, and they enjoy playing with, lying on, and eating gross things. Even though our modern dogs do not need to do so, the instinct is still very much alive in them. Bacterial or yeast infections can grow in some dogs, causing foul odors. You can seek medical help if you think your Cairn Terrier is suffering from an allergy or a skin infection. A quick skin scraping can be very useful in determining the best course of action. It will require a good, stable trainer who will not allow this dog to take advantage of them. Strong reinforcement is well for all dogs. As a result, make sure to compliment her when she succeeds. She is a smart dog who enjoys a good physical challenge as well as being pampered. She would find it easier to practice if she gets more exercise. Both dogs and puppies need to be socialized properly. Take her to the park and doggy daycare as much as possible to expose her to as many people and pets as possible.
Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. There are some Boxers that appear to be black. However, a solid black coat is not indicative of the breed. So, how can this be? Read more about what markings and patterns can cause a black-like coat. Fawn- What exactly is the color fawn in regard to dogs? This sample is a typical fawn. However, as you will see, fawn is a range of hues. To the right below on mobile is a medium fawn is the standard hue when referring to this terminology. With nice white flash markings on the chest and with black on the muzzle, this Boxer meets color breed standard very well. Brindle - What is brindle? Brindle is not technically a color, it is a pattern. The base is fawn and there is striping. The stripes may be light or dark, and density of the striping can range from thin to thick. Some brindles will look almost fawn and some will appear so dark that they look black. This Boxer shows the standard brindle striping. With white on his chest, paws and ankles and black on the muzzle, this Boxer also meets breed standards perfectly. This is a red fawn Boxer. As you can see, this fawn is darker and deeper than that the common tan fawn; producing a slight shading of red. What a gorgeous coat. This Boxer is a dark brindle. As you can see, with dark brindle the black is over powering the fawn color. The black striping in this pattern is heavy; which would be called a reverse or even a seal. Which simply means that the dog is not officially a solid fawn; he is a mix of colors. Seal - The Boxer dog you see here on the left is Vesta; this color is often referred to as seal. This is a super tight brindle. Siennna, right, is a fawn. Photo courtesy of Nancy Dark Brindle Boxer. Turkish, at 7 years old, photo courtesy of Renata Boxer Dog Flash The white markings on this breed are called "flash". If a Boxer has a moderate amount, one often refers to this as semi-flashy. Those with prominent white on a good portion of the coat are called flashy. No Markings? Not all Boxers have white markings. These are known as plain Boxers, but the term is misleading, as it refers to the genes at work. Read more: Boxers without White Markings Brindle Explanation Brindle one of the colors of this breed is actually a pattern. Stripes running through the coat partial or full is brindling. These are often black hairs, but may be any color that is a darker shade than the hairs that run under it. Depending on the exact color of these brindling pattern stripes, one may refer to a Boxer using one of the following terms listed in order from a very light brindle to a heavy dark striping : Light super light. This is a good Boxer question; because many people think of these dogs as being fawn or brindle color along with white markings. The official Boxer breed can be can be a combination of 3 colors: Fawn standard Brindle standard White alternate Now, there are also 5 types of markings that a Boxer dog can have. But, he or she actually does not need to have any of those markings. Boxers without white markings carry the SS gene, known as the plain gene. Those with white markings carry the Ssw gene, known as the flashy gene. If two SS Boxers are bred together, the resulting litter will be plain no markings , with the only exception being a jump in genetics, in which case genes jump a generation and if grandparents hold flashy Ssw genes, the puppies may have some white. If 2 flashy Boxers Ssw are bred together, the resulting litter will be puppies with markings, unless genes skip a generation to bring in the white coloring. When people talk of a fawn or brindle Boxer, they are usually actually talking about a fawn or brindle Boxer with white markings and a black mask. While this is a common color combination, it is not the only combination for this breed. Therefore, if your Boxer is just fawn or brindle, he does not need to have any of the white markings. He would just be considered to be fawn or brindle Boxer. Puppies often change in color and markings as they grow. However, if a Boxer puppy was a fawn or brindle without any white, that dog would be registered with the AKC as a Fawn or Brindle and the Markings Section would not be checked off. So, your Boxer is simply fawn which can range from a light, tan to a darker reddish tone or brindle which is a striping pattern of tans and blacks. The black striping can be thin and well spaced apart showing lots of tan - again any solid shade from light tan to a darker shade with red tones or it can be very thick often referred to as reverse brindling or in extreme cases, seal. Below are samples of both colors without white markings. Brindle - A brindle colored Boxer is much different than a fawn. Brindle is a mixture of colors. There is always a base of tan again, some Boxers will have a light base, others a dark base and there will be striping lines of a dark color crossing through the coat. Usually the overlay is black, but some dogs will have red or dark brown. Fawn - This is a tan color that ranges from light to dark and can have reddish tones to it. It is solid and often described as the color of a deer. Though most think of this hue as being a light brown, it can also be a deeper, burnished red. Discover more about our Boxer puppies for sale below! History From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. Temperament One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. Environment If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Exercises Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Grooming Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Even in the heat, she still pesters to walk and we walk about two miles a day. She also loves to ride in the car and she just sits there and watches. She will sit on our front porch real nice and watch as well. As you can tell, not much goes on that doesn't interest her. She owns the yard and chases rabbits and birds out. She has an obsession with balls and we play catch nearly every day, which she loves. She watches the ball with such intensity. She often looks like the horse in the dean's office in 'Animal House' legs extended up. Even the tough young guy in the neighborhood coos, "Just the cutest little puppy in the world" as we walk by. At Petsmart, she was being groomed last week. We stuck around waiting in the wings as they were finishing up her haircut. It is a 3 to 4 hour event. It was incredible to see the amount of people who would stop by the window, grab their spouse or friend, and point and talk about our dog. Some even were brave and went in to ask about her or to pet her. I bet 30 people stopped and about a half dozen went in in the half hour we watched. Here is everything you need to know about the Goldendoodle puppy personality. Here are some facts to help you decide. Typically, they come in three sizes : standard, miniature, and toy. The standard Goldendoodle is the most common. They are usually taller than a Golden Retriever and weigh somewhere between pounds. Mini Goldendoodles are often the result of a Golden Retriever being bred with a smaller Poodle. A Mini Goldendoodle puppy will grow to be somewhere between 30 and 45 pounds. Toy Goldendoodles are roughly 15 — 20 pounds. While you may find a standard or mini Goldendoodle at your local rescue organization, toy Goldendoodles often require specific breeding standards and can only be acquired from a reputable breeder. Given that a puppy of this breed can grow to be anywhere from 15 to 70 pounds, it is no wonder that they can also be found in a variety of colors. Depending on the parents, the puppies can be tan, white, ream, red, black, tawny, or somewhere in between. A straighter coat can come from the Golden Retriever parent. A curly coat will likely be the most hypoallergenic, as it comes from the Poodle. They are not invincible and can get ill just like any other dog. Some Goldendoodles can be prone to Golden Retriever health issues , like hip and elbow disorders. If you are looking to rescue a Goldendoodle from your local shelter, chances are they will not have their entire lineage on file. They have a great desire to please and to learn. Both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle have very loyal personalities. They are both quick to bond with their humans and thrive on human affection. They are both also fairly tolerant of the occasional rough-housing regarding children. The Goldendoodle puppy is also a smart one, just like mom and dad. Canine psychologist Stanley Coren ranked the top ten smartest dog breeds. The Golden Retriever is placed at the fourth smartest breed. Coren ranked the Poodle the second smartest breed. The trend likely started thanks in large part to the creation of the Labradoodle , the Labrador Retriever and Poodle designer crossbreed. This is true in some capacity, but maybe not for what you think. Goldendoodles are often touted as a hypoallergenic dog breed. No dog breed is technically hypoallergenic. If you are allergic to dogs, there is a chance your Goldendoodle could set you off sneezing. Before you run out and bring home a Goldendoodle from your local rescue, though, be sure that the allergy sufferer in your home spends time with the dog before you take them home. Dogs, like people, are individuals, and while someone with allergies may be fine around one Goldendoodle, another one could potentially set off an allergic reaction. Since they are so popular, finding a Goldendoodle at your local shelter might take a while. You could always come across the perfect Goldendoodle for you at your local shelter or rescue group, as well. My dog was groomed exactly how I wanted and Harry was super friendly. I have never been happier with how my dog has been groomed. Absolutely phenomenal customer service. Jodey put my dog at ease, and me, because to be honest, I was nervous about taking my dog Honey here because all other groomers have disappointed me. But not this one. Nicola Wain: First time going and will be the last. They have literally scalped her. My poor dog is literally bald.Utter rubbish. All she kept saying was we had to cut her short as the matting was really bad. I'm sorry but my poor dog is bald. Please do not send your dogs here, Rude and no empathy. My dog has no fur and all they can say is my dog was matted. They shaved my dogs ears without my permission. I was not happy and was in shock. They Cancelled 2 appointments originally. Should have listened to the people that told me not to go! Severe matting? You didn't show me any images, you didn't even call to advise severe matting, yes she had a bit of matting but nothing severe. I've shown pictures to other groomers and they agree I should have been called before you decided to shave her? Luckily for me I have images before I taken her in to you because of what people had said about your shop. I never said anything because I was in shock, she has never been this short. My husband was gob smacked. .Trial and error and her fur will grow back. The moral of the story is just pick up the phone and talk before you do anything drastic. Thank you. Lynn Jesson: We had 1 training session with Mo, he was fantastic, he explained everything really well and our dog is transformed. He is walking to heel, no pulling or reacting to other dogs, we are so pleased. Would recommend Mo without hesitation. He is now much better behaved, walks well on the lead and the recall is coming along nicely. Top class trainer. Clare Evans: We have just completed our puppy training package with trainer Mo and have loved every minute. Mo was excellent from the start and always on hand when I had any questions. I felt like it wasn't 'just 5 sessions' it was much more. Mo was very approachable and had brilliant tips and advice. I felt nothing was too much trouble. Overall an amazing start to our training journey. Doc Singh: We have 2 Alsatians who pulled on the lead, Mo and the team were very thorough, knowledgeable and often hilarious with their approach to sorting our the issues that were in hand. Definitely booking another session and probably more to sort out the matters relating to our dogs in due course. If you need a trainer who knows their onions, these guys are definitely the ticket. Trav an Mo are two of the best trainers I have came across a the knowledge between them is exceptional. The atmosphere at Vislor is always welcoming and a nice environment to be in, no egos just passionate trainers looking to help you on your journey. Highly highly recommended. Charlotte Poulton: Amazing work with the guys at Vislor. Really helped me and our pup progress together Sara Monk: I have been training with Trav since March '22 with my Malinois. Our relationship has improved so much and our partnership has really cemented. Trav has a super ability to think outside of the box and finds solutions for what best suits the dog in front of him. I would, and have recommended him to others. And hopefully we will be training with him for IGP for many years to come. We found Vislor and Travis and they taught us how to work with our dogs and made us understand why they were behaving like they were giving us the knowledge and tools to have 2 well behaved dogs. Plus having grained from Travis an exceptional insight into the mind set of a "working line GSD puppy. This will definitely not be the last we see of Travis and his group of trainers at Vislor as they have a mine of information far outstripping my 40 plus years of owning GSDs. Jonathan Ward: Can't recommend Vislor highly enough. Trav, Lorraine and Rich have been there to offer help, advice and support through the first few turbulent months of us owning a German Shepherd puppy! Rich has not only done puppy training lessons with us on site, but he has done a home visit and is always available to message and phone at any time of day to talk through any problems or issues we have! Vislor are a fantastic team and we will continue to use them as our puppy gets older so we stay on top of the training regime! I called and spoke with a lady called Lorraine who explained the types of dog training they do. I explained why I needed training and the type of dog I have. Lorraine said yes we can help, she sent me a link to their website. Oh 'wow', as soon as I looked at the website and read the reviews, I was excited to book my dog in. I did a follow up after following guidance. .I am truly impressed and so glad I came across these lovely professional people. Very reasonably priced. Money well spent. I would definitely recommend this company. Travis explained clearly what training was needed to achieve the objectives. The goals were achieved within a preset time frame through balanced training [i. I was updated regularly about the progress via WhatsApp. Any queries were answered promptly. Rather than putting my K9 in a kennel, this was time and money well spent. Highly recommended. After just one training session with Travis, he was quickly able to identify some of my short comings as a handler. We worked on gaining control of my 5 year rescue GSD on the lead, walking at the heel with out pulling. This was done remarkably quick. The difference is night and day, he is now walking perfectly on the lead. We had 3 lessons with Trav in total and the change has been amazing. She is such a lovely natured and friendly dog but she was an absolute nightmare around the home. Counter surfing, barking at everything. Her barking got so bad it was affecting her toilet training because we kept having to drag her in the house before she had done her business. That could be at 6am or 11pm. The methods Trav has taught me has improved her barking massively. And just her manners in general. Such an improvement. I booked the lessons so we could get some kind of normality and calm at home. Lewis Cozens: I cannot thank Trav and the team enough for the training they provided. Our dog had done lots of training, and was generally well behaved l, however he had a tendancy to just bolt if off the lead and would chase any birds he could find. After 3 sessions with Trav we now have a dog who is off lead happy and doing so much better all round. Trav has equipped us with the right knowledge and advice to help us train our puppy. I do my research and find what I am looking for. I make the phone call and the welcoming tones of Lorraine Foster greet me. I declare that I know she is the breeder of the animal in said series… she is bemused by my compliments. I make the suggestion that I purchase a Ridgeback pup and let Vislor train him for 12 months. We talk about my breed favourites and what I am looking for in a dog. I admit that a GSD would be second on my list of choices. One of the trainers from Vislor owns a Son of the GSD and he is preparing to let him go to the market. Photos and videos start coming through. The boy is stunning. Incredibly well trained in good manners, high level obedience and a qualified protection dog. I arrange to meet with the dog and other members of the Vislor team. I am very impressed. Travis insists on showing me the full ability of Fabio — this includes the dogs protection ability. I am stunned and now nervous. The animal is a thoroughbred. I am not even a beginner. I wondered if he was attempting to moonlight as a salesman. I was wrong. Travis was right. At every step Lorraine or Craig were on hand to help and make things simple. Little did I know that in the background the police, military, private security, and families looking for protection dogs are also expressing interest in MY dog. Vislor had made their decision; they wanted the animal to come to me and have a family life with me. They stuck to their word. I am not going to type verse and line on every aspect of the three day handover to introduce Fabio to my family and myself and to teach me how to handle, play, exercise and continue with his ongoing training. So where am I now? My wife greets the dog every morning with a smile and admits that he is better than we could ever have planned or expected Travis was right. The children love him. He is so reliable it is startling. He is the best behaved in the family — including the adults. My PA suggest that she has never seen me so complete and content. I am constantly stopped and complimented on the incredible animal by my side. Yes, I am in love however my affection, admiration and gratitude to Vislor is as boundless as my former love of Ridgebacks. They have gone above and beyond on everything. I would never entertain a Pup in the future without first consulting with them and then committing to some sort of residential training. Their pre trained animals are pure investment and tremendous value for money Jonathan Mulroy: We collected our new German Shepherd puppy, Tuddy, in December .The breeder recommended that we engage the support of a German Shepherd Specialist Trainer as soon as practicable. We started our lessons in mid-January this year, and we have learned so much — and we have enjoyed it all enormously. Craig and his Team work so well together in order to provide an excellent training environment. Our main trainers have been Craig, Daryl and Lucy, and we have also had Danny involved in many of our lessons. Thereafter our training has been carried out by Craig as well as Daryl and Lucy: this has been an excellent approach, since all three bring different skills to our lessons. It is quite obvious that they all have an absolute love of dogs, German Shepherds in particular, and their knowledge of training methods and their execution is beyond impressive. During the past six months we have made real progress with our puppy — now a strapping 35 kilos in weight. Whilst we still have some way to go, we are so pleased with the way he has developed: he now a well-disciplined dog, friendly and affectionate, and a wonderful pet to have as part of the family. In summary, this has been a great success and has been much enjoyed. The friendship, encouragement, advice and guidance we have experienced have been beyond our expectations. Thank you to Craig and all the Team! Michael Garner: I can't speak highly enough of Craig. He took our very anxious, fearful and reactive rescue dog and, in a few weeks, transformed him - he now walks confidently at heel through towns where there are many dogs, can relax at a cafe and even took part in a local dog show, none of which would have been conceivable before. More relaxed, he is much happier. Owners who claim their businesses can update their profile details, add photos, respond to reviews, and more. I'm not used to asking for help like this. I have two beautiful goldendoodle puppies, one named Parker that just turned 1 years old last Friday and the other named Milo that is 3 months old. They are awesome brothers and have been a lot of fun. Last Saturday evening Milo, in his puppiness decided to test the laws of gravity and take flight from the back of the car through the window. Milo severely broke his left hind leg up close to his hip. I immediately took him to the animal ER and have nursed him through the last couple of days until we could see a surgeron. That's right, Milo did it up good and needs surgery to repair his leg. A simple cast and rest isn't enough. We only have two options; get it fixed or.I'm not thinking about the "or" right now. Not doing anything will cause a lameness that just wouldn't be fair to him. The orthopedic vet hospital requires payment before procedure and I'm kinda short. I feel so horrible that this happened to him and am coming to grips that this was truly an accident. I love my pups to much to be neglectful and the windows are usually down a little until we get moving. If you can help I'd be eternally grateful; but even if you're not able to, please say a prayer for Milo and me. Read more.

Not all pugs will be affected by these diseases. There is a noticeable size difference between male and female pugs, with the latter often being the smaller of the two sexes. Nutrition The food you provide your dog has a major impact on how much it weighs. Dogs have dietary preferences, and not all dog diets are created equal. In addition, your dog should be fed more often, but with careful attention to both the quality and amount of food it receives. All dog food should start with meat as the primary component. How well and how healthy your pug grows depends on the food he eats. Pugs may not be the most active of dogs, but they still need enough playtime and exercise to be in excellent shape. The more active they are, the less probable it is that they will gain weight. To maintain normal growth and development, pug puppies require the optimum quantity of food. Pug pups should eat high-quality small-breed puppy chow. Small breeds require greater protein and calorie diets to sustain their quick development. Growing pug puppies should have a waist and ribs that can be touched but not seen. Feeding your skinny dog more may help. However, overweight puppies may require less food. You may also ask your vet if your pug is a healthy weight. They may assess your condition and advise on weight management. You may use the pug growth chart as a reference to help you determine whether or not your pug is on the appropriate development curve, but you should keep in mind that the chart is just a recommendation. Talk to the doctor about any concerns you have about your pug. You can assist your pug in achieving a healthy weight if it is either overweight or underweight. If your pug seems to be underweight, you should either give them extra food or switch to a diet that has more calories. Reduce the amount of food your pug is eating and try to persuade them to do more physical exercise. Always seek the advice of your trusted veterinarian in order to choose the best course of therapy for your pug. The second step is to do a self-weigh without carrying your Pug. In the end, you may determine the difference by subtracting the first weight from the second weight. This is how much weight your Pug has. Pug Genetics And Common Health Problems Pugs are not immune to the possibility of developing hereditary diseases; this is true of all dog breeds. A few examples are as follows: Dry eye, corneal ulcers, and proptosis in which the eyeball is positioned too far forward in the socket are all potential complications for their eyes. Medications exist to alleviate the discomfort caused by ulcers and dry eye. Your dog has to visit the doctor ASAP since proptosis may lead to blindness. Only pugs are susceptible to encephalitis, a fatal brain illness. Circling, seizures, and even blindness are all symptoms. Legg-Perthes disease is a joint disorder characterized by a decrease in femoral blood flow and subsequent disintegration of the femur. This may sometimes be helped by surgery. This disease, known as hemi-vertebrae, is more common in pugs with short noses. Final Words Because pugs are a small breed of dog, it is probable that they would have a longer lifespan than you would find with a bigger breed of dog. This is something that you might see with larger breeds. The average lifespan of a pug is 13 years, but it may vary anywhere from 13 to 15 years depending on how healthy the dog is and whether or not he has any health concerns that might shorten his life. Overall, pugs have the potential to live a happy and long life provided that their weight is managed appropriately. When they are between Between one and seven yeas old, they are regarded as being at the height of their potential; beyond that, they are categorized as senior dogs. These puppies are playful, affectionate dogs who will get along with even inexperienced pet parents, despite having a stubborn side, especially when it comes to housetraining. Pugs were first domesticated in China during the Han era B. According to some historians, they are descended from the Tibetan Mastiffs. The Chinese Emperors treasured them, and they lived in lavish homes, occasionally even with troops on duty to protect them. Pugs were brought to the United States just after the Civil War, and the American Kennel Club officially recognized them as a breed in .Pugs were initially quite well-liked, but by the turn of the century, sentiment had changed. But even in those small bodies, a lot of stuff can be happening. Pugs go through a lot of physical and mental changes during the first year of their life. Their development is pretty rapid and they can sometimes reach full adult size at just nine months of age. But what exactly happens in those months? And how do Pug puppies behave in certain periods? Puppies will be toothless, blind, and deaf at this age, but they will have a sense of taste and touch. Thanks to a lifestyle consisting of exclusively nursing and napping, they will develop and grow swiftly. Your pug puppies should perk up and start to interact more by the time they are three weeks old. They should be able to get out of bed and go potty on their own, since they will start to have some control over their bladder. By the time they are eight weeks old, they can start some proper house training , and by nine weeks, they can start learning basic commands. When it comes to their size, they should already weigh around six pounds by this point. This indicates that your puppy will be losing teeth as well. A 6-month-old pug will closely resemble a full-grown adult in its physique, but the development process is not yet quite over. It should already weigh close to 18 pounds, but keep in mind that some dogs are slightly bigger or smaller than others. By now, your puppy should have finished teething. To help maintain your puppy as healthy as possible, you must keep him active and stimulated. From Nine Months To One Year Most Pugs are fully physically formed and close to their full adult weight by the time they are nine months old. However, some of them can still continue to add a little bit of weight past this mark. Offer plenty of opportunity for exercise, because Pugs like being active, and due to their unique physical build, they need to stay as slim as possible. The eventual weight of an adult pug will be strongly influenced by his gender, the quantity of exercise it gets, and the kind of food it consumes. Nevertheless, the weight of an adult pug can range from 14 to over 18 pounds. Being little dogs, even a few pounds make a difference. There is a basic average range associated with the breed, but not every Pug will end up being the same height and weight. Furthermore, the weight chart that we provided is mostly referential for standard-size Pugs and not taking into account the special case of teacup Pugs. This is due to the fact that it is hard to anticipate the growth of the puppies to within an inch or pound because there are so many diverse elements that in the end determine their development. In other instances, it may even enable you to identify early signs of anomalies or health problems. We can roughly divide those factors into two distinct categories: internal and external. Internal Factors Internal factors that impact the growth of a Pug are those that are embedded within the dog as soon as, or even before, it is born. This is what nature has given the pup, and there is nothing you can do to change or influence it. However, knowing these details and the effect they have on puppy development can help you prepare and anticipate certain things. The two biggest internal elements that shape the growth of a Pug are its genetic makeup and its gender. Genetics The height and tendency to gain weight of your pug can be influenced by genetics. Pugs could exercise frequently, just like people, yet still, gain weight. Your dog will naturally be smaller if he is the runt of the litter. Male pugs stand between ten and thirteen inches tall and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds, while females are slightly smaller, with their average height being twelve inches, and the average weight between 13 and 16 pounds. As you might have guessed, the two biggest external factors in determining the growth of a Pug are nutrition and exercise. There are a lot of different dog foods out there, and some of them contain fillers or additives that are actually unhealthy for Pugs to consume. Your dog has to be fed multiple times per day, but be mindful of the type and the amount of food. Pugs may not be the most active dogs, but they still need enough walks, play and exercise to stay healthy. They are probably lighter as they move more. Their general health will improve, which is crucial for growing puppies. In order to be healthy, your puppy also has to receive vaccinations and be fed consistently. Pug Health Problems Numerous health problems can affect pugs, and a lot of them are the result of their brachycephalic conformations. They share those issues with some other breeds who have a similar head and body shape, for example, the Bulldogs. Fortunately, your veterinarian can help you manage many of their potential health issues. Some of them can even be detected early on by using DNA tests. But since this is an article about Pug growth, we want to focus on health issues that are related to weight, in particular. Overweight Pugs Pugs have a tendency to put on excess weight. They are opportunistic eaters who munch on everything that comes their way and this increases their propensity for obesity. Pugs could also get overweight if their diet is not controlled, if the food is of low quality, or if they are not active enough. If your Pug is healthy, you can help it lose weight by taking the following actions: — Cut back on the serving sizes. The most frequent causes of being underweight in Pugs are various parasites, diabetes and other medical conditions , teeth problems, as well as a poor diet. There are a few at-home remedies you might try after your veterinarian has ruled out an underlying illness. You should start by switching to high-quality dog food. Pugs can be picky eaters, but high-quality dog food from a premium brand should work. After that, you have to make sure to give them smaller meals, but more frequently. Before feeding your pug again, give it some time to digest the last meal. To speed up the process, you might add some nutritious weight-gain snacks to these meals. Finally, make sure to give your pug a thorough workout. Although it may seem contradictory, exercise will aid in the development of muscles and boost hunger. Just be careful not to overwork it because that would be counterproductive. Its weight is perhaps the most important one, but there are others, as well. For example, you might want to know its neck and chest circumference in order to buy the best possible harness. In the following section, we will explain how to perform some of the most common measurements on your Pug. After that, you should weigh it once every six months. You should weigh your Pug more frequently if they have any medical issues because some illnesses can result in weight shifts. To weigh your Pug at home, you will need a bathroom scale. If your dog is calm and disciplined enough, you can just put it on the scale and note the reading. Simply step on the scale yourself, while carrying your Pug, then note the reading. Next, weigh yourself without the Pug by your side. Just keep in mind to measure a dog from the paws to the withers, not to the head. The procedure is as follows: 1. Position your Pug directly against a wall or doorframe. Locate the withers of your Pug. Calculate how far the pencil mark is from the floor. Pugs typically have necks that range in size from 12 to 16 inches on average. Two scales — either 1 to 5 or 1 to 9 — can be used to get the BCS. This implies that while your Pug has a thin layer of fat covering its entire body, its ribs can easily be felt with the fingertips and its waistline and stomach tuck are both visible to the eye. You need to be able to predict their height and weight correctly so that you are able to account for this. Not to mention all the other factors that need your focus, including your diet, degree of exercise, training, etc. Knowing how big and heavy your Pug should be at a certain age will help you plan its diet, living space, as well as your budget. It's a funny thing because the changes happen gradually and owners usually do not notice. And then, one day it reaches a certain point and the owner will say, "When did my dog get old!? Your dog may show a bit of difficulty when rising from a down position. He or she may walk slower up a staircase. A quality canine mattress is recommended for any age, however during the senior years an orthopedic canine bed is more important than ever. Expect an older Pug dog to take more naps and retreat more often due to a lower tolerance for noise levels. When your dog reaches the age of 8 or 9, it will be time to give a bit more attention to certain grooming techniques. Skin looses its elasticity and cleaning wrinkles will be more important than ever. An older Pug will be more susceptible to infections. Take extra time to clean the folds and keep them dry. Your Pug's veterinarian should be performing more thorough tests, especially for sugar levels. Eye exams are very important, as well. Just as with humans, an older Pug may be more susceptible to developing diabetes, arthritis , have problems with joints and their bones may be more brittle. The pounds that they have been carrying around and the body structure that they have short legs especially have been taking its toll. At this age, excess weight be a problem. It is recommended to make a gradual change in the diet, to ensure that meals have a higher count of nutrients specifically for aging pets. If you previously gave no-so-healthy snacks, make an effort to change over to a solid, healthy meal and snack plan. It will be time to make a change in regard to a vitamin and mineral supplement, switching to a senior formula. Additional supplements can be helpful depending on a Pug's specific needs. Most often, this breed does best with supplements to aid in joint health. Omega 3 can help to keep the skin and coat healthy and combat drying issues. The intensity of exercise should be scaled back a bit for seniors ; though daily duration of activity should remain as normal if the older Pug can handle it. It is still important go for walks so that a dog's heart stays healthy; movement is very necessary. However, once your Pug dog is a senior, you do not want to overdo activities as an older heart will not be able to handle what a younger heart was able to. It is during this time that you want to make the household as quite and peaceful as possible. Unless you absolutely must, do not move your furniture or make any changes that could cause stress or confusion. Creatures of habit, dogs know where things are and it can be disturbing if the environment is changed. The ability to hold elimination may weaken as bladder and bowel muscle loose some strength. At this time, you may want to start using doggie diapers. As odd as they may look, this will help your Pug and your home stay sanitary. If your senior does have accidents, never scold or punish. This is a normal process of aging. A loving owner, will of course, want to spend every moment that is left by showing compassion and care. All rights reserved. What to Feed German Shepherd Puppies: A Healthy Feeding Guide One of the first things you need to know about what to feed German Shepherd puppies is, right from the start, to choose a high-quality puppy-specific food for large breed puppies. What to feed German Shepherd puppies—feed German Shepherd puppies a diet that is: Specifically created for large-breed puppies. What do German Shepherd puppies eat? New owners are given a host of choices when bringing home their new pups. You can choose to offer one or the other, or even opt for mixed feeding. Dry Kibble Kibble is the most popular and economical choice for German Shepherd puppies. Plus, the major manufacturers offer a complete and balanced diet in many different flavors, with or without grains, and even limited ingredient diets. Kibble can be moistened either with water or broth. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of kibble when it comes to feeding German Shepherd puppies: Advantages Easy to purchase at most stores and online. Keeps for longer than other food options. Quick and simple to serve with little clean up. Disadvantages Can be difficult for some puppies to chew, causing them to not eat enough. Wet Food Here are some advantages and disadvantages of feeding German Shepherd puppies wet food : Advantages Softer and potentially more palatable for picky eaters. Contains more water content than dry food, which can help keep your puppy hydrated. Can leave dogs feeling fuller for longer due to the water content. Can be more expensive than kibble in the long run. Requires more preparation time. Mixing Dry Kibble and Wet Foods Feeding our German Shepherd puppies is no easy task, and deciding between wet and dry puppy food can leave us scratching our heads. But what if we told you there was a middle ground? Mixing wet and dry puppy foods can be an option worth considering, but it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Wet food contributes to increased water intake, ensuring your furry friend stays well-hydrated. Allows you to provide a diverse array of nutrients, contributing to a balanced diet for your growing German Shepherd. Disadvantages Might make it trickier to regulate portion sizes accurately, potentially leading to overfeeding and weight issues. These diets exclude foods that have been cooked or processed in any way. There are also some advantages and disadvantages to feeding a German Shepherd puppy a raw food diet: Advantages Raw diets consist of uncooked, fresh ingredients that retain their natural nutrients, potentially promoting better health for your puppy. Some puppies with food sensitivities might find relief on a raw diet as it eliminates common allergens found in processed foods. Disadvantages Preparing a balanced raw diet requires careful planning to ensure your pup gets all the necessary nutrients in the right proportions. Raw diets carry a higher risk of bacterial contamination, potentially affecting both your pup and you. Sourcing high-quality ingredients and properly storing them can be costly and time-consuming. Homemade Diets For large breed puppies, like German Shepherds, homemade diets must be carefully formulated, just like commercial foods. To create a homemade diet recipe specifically for your dog, it is preferable to consult a veterinarian who holds a board certification in veterinary nutrition. Unfortunately, research has shown that many well-intentioned dog owners still overfeed or give their dogs an unbalanced diet, which can be harmful. By cooking at home, you can skip additives and preservatives often found in commercial dog food. Disadvantages Without proper knowledge and planning, homemade meals may lack essential nutrients, leading to nutritional imbalances. Preparing homemade food demands time and effort, which might be challenging for busy pet parents. Mishandling raw ingredients can lead to contamination, causing health issues for your puppy. Remember, these charts help provide a guideline, but each dog is an individual. For example, if your dog has had a busy day of training and playing, they may need a few extra calories for dinner. This helps ensure they are growing as expected, and if not, you may need to alter the recommended feeding amount. As a rule of thumb, most German Shepherd puppies will eat as follows in this chart: Age. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppy diet: newborn For a German Shepherd puppy to develop and grow properly, it is imperative that they first nurse on their mother's milk. The first milk they receive is a protein and antibody-rich type of milk known as colostrum. This gives the puppy's immune and central nervous systems a boost. They then progress on to regular breast milk. Puppies will nurse for at least 6 to 8 weeks, gradually being weaned on to solid food at about 4 weeks. If, for any reason, the puppy cannot suckle its mother, don't give them cow or goat milk. These milks are very poor quality in comparison to a puppy's mother's milk. If your German shepherd puppy has to be prematurely weaned, a veterinarian will be able to prescribe specific infant formula and establish the appropriate dosage for your puppy. For example, a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd should not be fed the same food. This is because hese breeds have different nutritional needs. Take a look here to find out more about the diet for a prematurely weaned puppy. German Shepherd puppy diet: 1 month old From 3 to 4 weeks old, when it comes to feeding a German Shepherd puppy, we should start by letting them taste new foods and flavors. At this stage, the German Shepherd puppy's diet plan requires them to eat a special wet food for puppies. At around 6 to 8 weeks old, a German Shepherd puppy should be given a little dry dog food with water, or unseasoned chicken stock between nursing sessions. From their eighth week onward, a German Shepherd should be weaned and start feeding on solid food with a special puppy feed. The best dog food for a German Shepherd puppy is breed specific, but this may not be available everywhere. In these cases, your veterinarian can create a proper food plan for your German Shepherd puppy. At this stage, milk must be removed from the puppy's diet as it could cause diarrhea. If by any chance your dog or puppy is suffering from a bad stomach, we recommend taking a look at our article on what to do if yourt dog has diarrhea. In addition, it is vital that puppies have constant access to clean fresh water. German Shepherd puppy diet: 2 months old At two months of age, you can start to slowly decrease the moistening of your German Shepherd's dry food. Eventually, the puppy will be used to eating the food completely dry. Following the German Shepherd puppy food chart, from 2 until 4 months old, a puppy will eat 4 or 5 times a day. This has to be carried out with one very important addition: discipline. A puppy needs to learn that it will not be fed constantly throughout the day, but at specific times. We start of by placing a bowl of food down for 10 minutes, this should give the puppy enough time to finish its meal. After 10 minutes, we suggest taking the bowl of food away, even if your puppy hasn't finished eating. A puppy's food bowl must only be available to the dog for 10 minutes. This 10 minutes should be enough time for the puppy to eat all of its provided food. As already mentioned, after 10 minutes, you should take the food bowl away, even if the puppy hasn't finished eating. This pattern will introduce the puppy's food schedule and allow it an opportunity to become accustomed to particular feeding times. Accepting and adapting to a diet plan is very important for a puppy's intellectual development. It also facilitates more complex and demanding training sessions. Food for German shepherd puppies should be higher in calories, fats, proteins and calcium than adult German Shepherd dog food. This is because puppies are still growing and developing and therefore need better nutrition. German Shepherd puppy diet: food plan after 4 months Between 4 and 6 months of age, the number of meals which we have detailed in our German Shepherd puppy food chart should be reduced to 3 a day. The food quantity should be increased and an extra margin of 2 minutes to eat should be provided. The packaging of quality commercial dog food will detail the appropriate suggested amount of food for the puppy, depending on its age and weight. If you have any doubts, consult your veterinarian. You should eventually start mixing fresh food, such as meat, fish or vegetables, with the commercial dry feed. Beware of forbidden foods for dogs. Some people ask about a raw diet for a German shepherd puppy, but we recommend these such foods should always be cooked and never given to a dog raw. Meanwhile, treats for dogs should only be used as positive reinforcement during their training and learning period, never as a food supplement. Under no circumstances should you give your German Shepherd, or any dog, human food leftovers. Human food contains salt, sugar and seasoning contents which are very harmful to a dog's health. In addition, if you do offer your dog your food, it will pester you during meals [1]. For more, take a look at some of the harmful effects of treating a dog like a human. German Shepherd puppy diet: after 6 months When your German Shepherd puppy reaches 6 months of age, its daily food intake should be reduced to twice a day. When we do this we can increase the food portions and eating time accordingly. Our German Shepherd diet chart below should be taken into account depending on the age, lifestyle and size of your German Shepherd puppy. After 6 months, you should give your German Shepherd puppy shatterproof bones, such as beef, to gnaw on. For more, take a look here for more about; Bones For Puppies. German shepherd puppy: Dog food and water bowl hygiene Your puppy's food and drink containers should always be clean. Hygiene is very important in order to prevent the appearance of insects. If you notice that your puppy has not eaten for three consecutive meals, consult your veterinarian immediately. This lack of appetite in a puppy could be caused by bowel obstruction and stomach pain; due to the ingestion of toxic food etc. Don't forget that puppies are very sensitive and fragile and if you ignoring any symptoms of disease, it can result in severe issues or even puppy fatality. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppies should be socialized and trained to live with you from day one. These dogs are incredibly capable and have the ability, if trained properly, to learn tricks and perform activities [2]. In addition to the diet of a German Shepherd, don't forget the importance of preventative medicines, following the appropriate vaccination schedules and general German Shepherd dog care. For more information about your German shepherd, take a look at.Growth and weight The German Shepherd puppy is a popular addition to many households. Sometimes called the Alsatian puppy, the German Shepherd was initially developed for herding and now commonly used as a working dog or pet. This is your guide to providing all the nutrients your new puppy needs. When Your Puppy Comes Home Although they look pretty sturdy at eight weeks old, German Shepherd puppies are vulnerable to tummy upsets when they arrive at a new home. To help them settle in stick with the food their breeder was giving them for the first two weeks minimum. You can then gradually swap over by increasing proportions over the course of a couple of days. However, if they are doing well on their original food, considering sticking with it for longer. To begin with follow the guidelines provided by the breeder, the feed manufacturer or by your veterinarian. This will vary depending on how calorie dense the food is and how it is formulated. Your puppy should be fed four times a day up to the age of four months. After this age, two larger meals at regular times will be sufficient. However, the more often you feed your pup the stronger your bond will grow. Simple sits and recalls, puppy tricks, they all make a big difference to how your dog behaves towards you and feels about you as they grow. What to Feed A German Shepherd Puppy You will find there are a lot of different opinions about what kind of food is best. Kibble and wet food are the most popular, but you do also have the option of raw or homemade meals. Puppy Kibble Great quality, high meat content kibble is my go-to for feeding larger puppy breeds. At the beginning of the day I measure out their daily food amount, then separate it into little pots. Some as meals, and the remainder to use throughout the day to reward good behavior or get off on the right foot with positive reinforcement. The FDA recently issued a notice alerting dog owners to a potential increased risk of a serious heart condition. This is called canine dilated cardiomyopathy DCM. The risk is in dogs eating foods that include peas, lentils, or potatoes instead of grains. The underlying cause of these cases is not clear, but the FDA note suggests that caution should be used in selecting foods with these ingredients for German Shepherds and other large dogs. Canned Dog Food For picky eaters canned food can be more appealing. It smells stronger, and debatably tastes nicer. These diets do not include cooked or otherwise processed foods. However, it may be more difficult to regulate a BARF diet to ensure a slow and steady growth rate in young puppies. If you find this option intriguing, you can check out our article on feeding your dog a raw diet. Homemade Diets Research has shown that in the past, poorly balanced homemade diets have been harmful to German Shepherd puppies. There is now abundant information available to anyone who is willing and able to produce a safe and balanced diet. However, modern cases studies have shown that well-meaning owners may still over-feed or create an unbalanced diet. So, this is an area where you really can have too much of a good thing. As with commercial foods, homemade diets must be properly formulated for a large breed dog. Do not deviate from recommended recipes as provided by a veterinarian. If possible, preferably a vet with a board certification in veterinary nutrition. Recipes published in popular magazine and websites may not be nutritionally complete or suitable for a large breed puppy. Is My Puppy the Right Weight? You can also refer to German Shepherd puppy growth charts to see if you puppy is gaining weight and within the normal range. However, keep in mind that some dogs will be unusually small or large but still be perfectly healthy. Do not try to maximize growth rates as this can lead to health problems later. Ensure that you are familiar with how to assess the body condition of your puppy. The ribs and spine should be easy to feel but not simple to see. My Puppy Is Still Hungry If your puppy seems excessively hungry provide more frequent but smaller meals. Young puppies cannot tolerate going without food for extended periods. With older puppies you may wish to experiment with foods that help them feel more full, and provide low calories treats. Keeping a health puppy active and occupied will help prevent them from becoming overly focused on anticipating their next meal. The best food for German Shepherd puppies in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to German Shepherd breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a German Shepherd puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. Before the four month mark, it is advised to include some dry food in their diet. You can do this in a few simple steps: Mix some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed your German Shepherd puppy as they get older. With this rapid growth can come some risks. German Shepherds are susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia, that can start in puppyhood. They will be very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen between 12 and 24 months of age. This is because, being a larger breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. Remember that the more active the pup, the more food they require. While following feeding guidelines is important to avoid over and underfeeding, you can adjust the amounts of food you provide to your dog based on level of activity. If you are unsure, it is always best to ask your vet for guidance. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your German Shepherd puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. For puppies, this amount will often be two of three times higher, as they are more active and growing quickly. German Shepherd puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, German Shepherd puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. However, they can also be at risk of gastric dilatation or volvulus, or GDV. Certain dog breeds can be more susceptible to GDV; particularly deep chested breeds including German Shepherds. GDV can occur when a dog bloats a few hours after eating a meal. Though the exact causes of GDV are not known, grains and cereals are suspected to be contributors. The amount of food you give your German Shepherd is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult German Shepherds, between 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female German Shepherds, which tend to be about 8 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, and 1, per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your German Shepherd based on how calorically dense their food is. German Shepherds should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs who are at risk of GDV may benefit from exercise after eating, to aid with digestion. You should also try to give your German Shepherd a high quality food that is specially designed for larger or working breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. German Shepherds can be particularly susceptible to skin disease or allergies, including canine atopic dermatitis, bacterial skin infections, flea allergy dermatitis, forms of contact dermatitis, or scabies. If your dog develops a skin issue, it is often a sign that they may be suffering from a form of food sensitivity. If you are unsure about what you should feed your German Shepherd, you should always consult your vet as they will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any allergies or chronic health issues: creating a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for years to come. Part of figuring out what you should feed your German Shepherd includes deciding between wet, dry, or a raw food diet. Wet food for German Shepherds is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. A raw diet can be a good option for your German Shepherd as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your German Shepherd, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. The amount of food you feed your dog should be determined by their activity levels, age, weight, breed, and size. Any meals prepared for your dog need to contain the right balance of nutrients. You should also be extra careful not to introduce your dog to foods that are harmful to their health. While we might enjoy the taste of nuts, artificial sweeteners, alcohol and onions, these can be toxic for dogs and can cause serious illness and even death. German Shepherds in particular need plenty of exercise as they are a large working breed with a lot of energy. No matter how old your German Shepherd is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress.

f1 chocolate labradoodle puppies - When our 8-weeks puppies leave home, we always say. But how much and how fast should a puppy grow? What should they weight at 3, 5, 8 months? We have been very skeptical to give this information to our families, but many of our puppy families want this chart, so here it is. Some of the reasons we hesitated to provide this chart with every puppy — is because we know that once there is an actual chart to follow, it can be very stressful for families, as they might think that this is the ONLY way their puppy will and should develop and anything off these numbers is a fault. This is not true. This can be overwhelming! I remember when our first born kid, a daughter Malasha was born, I was stressing when a pediatrician would place her on a scale every month — if she was not gaining on the top of the percentile chart, I was feeling that I am failing as a breastfeeding mother. Now, after four absolutely different pregnancies, births and many years of breastfeeding, I know that each child is different, unique and for as long as there is a continuous progress and development — we are doing ok as parents. If you will keep this is mind and not stress every month - then please use this table. We did not create these numbers, but used the data we found online, we just put it into a nicer design. The numbers on this German Shepherd Growth Chart are simply averages. This chart may become helpful to give owners an idea of what to expect as their puppy matures. As these numbers give you an approximation of what weight an average GSD puppy is typically at that particular age in months. Remember not to get frustrated if your puppy does not match these perfectly, but if you notice significant difference, bring this up with your veterinarian during your next visit. Not a bad idea to have a well-puppy check up to see how your puppy is doing health-wise and to make sure there are no underlying causes making this an issue. Raising German Shepherds for the first eight weeks, we are amazed by the amount of growth and development they go through in such short amount of time. One time we had a litter of eight weeks of age and a newborn litter at the same time, so I asked Serge to hold a newborn puppy in one hand and a puppy of 8 weeks in his other and took a picture for comparison. It was just amazing to see! All our neonatal care happens in those eight weeks and there is such a tremendous difference! When our puppies leave from our kennel home they average at 12 lbs. When we are updated with images and weights, it is absolutely incredible to see how fast they grow! From their loyal and obedient personalities to their beautiful coats and markings, they bring joy to many homes, including mine. With impressive intelligence, these puppies are easy to train and make excellent companion animals. The German shepherd is a large breed, usually weighing between pounds for males and up to 75 pounds for females. Their coats require minimal grooming but will benefit from occasional brushing. German shepherds are very active dogs who love to run around; they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. They also enjoy activities such as agility training or nose work games where they can use their smarts! Factors Influencing Weight But what about their size? German shepherds can vary in size based on gender, age, nutrition, and because of their breeding. For example, a German working line shepherd is much more energetic than the more laid-back American show line dog. A puppy from working lines may weigh less than the average on the charts. Be sure to consider factors such as gender and environment when monitoring your pup's development. A good rule of thumb is that by eight weeks of age, a German Shepherd puppy should weigh between pounds, depending on the genetic factors mentioned above. By six months, most male puppies will weigh between 49lbs — 57lbs with an average weight of 53lbs, and a female will weigh between 44lbs — 49lbs with an average weight of 46lbs. For this reason, when consulting a weight chart for a German shepherd puppy, it's essential to understand the breed, lineage, and pedigree of the dog, as well as the sex of the dog. Our puppy weight charts are specific to German Shepherd Dogs and consider all these factors. It's an excellent tool for monitoring your pup's growth and health. These charts show the average expected weight range for male and female German shepherds at different ages, from puppies to adults. Knowing the expected range can help ensure your pup grows normally and stays within healthy boundaries. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. Our chart differs from others in that you can track your puppy's weight based on his actual weight at a point in time. Many other weight charts are either for non-specific breeds, or if they are specific to a German Shepherd, they only give you the averages and a range. While this is all useful and included in our charts, what is missing from many others is what weight your puppy will likely be based on his actual weight now. Most people bring their new puppy home at 8 weeks old 2 months. The range for a female German Shepherd puppy at that age is between lbs. As you already know your puppy's weight, you can estimate how much they are likely to weigh when older using our chart. For example, if your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old. To estimate how much they are likely to weigh at 6 months old, you would find that weight on the chart and follow it down to the 6-month-old row and see that she would most likely weigh 46lbs by the time she is 6 months old and 68lbs when fully grown. Of course, these are just estimates, and all puppies grow at different speeds, as will yours. Another way this chart is helpful is if, using the same example, your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old and then jumps to 49 lbs at 6 months old, instead of the predicted 46 lbs. In that situation, you would follow that new column down and see that she is now closer to weighing 70 lbs when fully grown. They are heavier-boned, more muscular, and have deeper chests. If you know what you're looking for, you can distinguish a male from a female German shepherd by looking at their heads, as a male is larger and have a more masculine look. Using the German Shepherd Puppy Weight Charts To use this chart, find your pup's current weight along the top and go down the left side of the chart to find his age. If he is in range, you can follow that column down to see what he will likely weigh at each age milestone. For example, if your male German Shepherd puppy weighs 18 lbs at 8 weeks old, then you would find the nearest weight at that age on the chart. In this case, it's .In this instance, he would weigh approximately .Under no circumstances should you try to adjust your dog's diet or exercise to fit in with the chart; it is merely a guide. German Shepherd Weight Chart for Female Puppies Female German shepherds, on the whole, have a much narrower head and nose and have an overall feminine look, especially around the eyes. If you know what you're looking for, you can guess whether they are male or female by looking at their face. Having said that, my girl, Ava, was very tall for a female and was often mistaken for a boy, even when she was wearing her pink collar and leash! But I still think her face was much more feminine than her brother Hudson's. This breed of dog has unique growth development. During the first three months of their life, a German Shepherd's body goes through a significant growth spurt. Typically, they can double their birth weight in the first week! At 12 weeks, you can expect your pup to weigh about pounds for a male and pounds for a female. This growth spurt will continue through five months old; by the time they're six months, you'll likely have a large, goofy puppy on your hands. After that initial growth period is over, you'll find that your German shepherd will gain weight slowly from then on out until it reaches its full adult size at around two or three years old. On average, female German Shepherds reach an adult weight of pounds, while males reach pounds. German Shepherd Puppy Height Chart German shepherds come in a range of sizes, some taller than others. It can be helpful to know the different heights of German shepherds to ensure that the one you choose fits your lifestyle and needs. When looking at a German shepherd height chart, it's essential to remember that males tend to be larger than females. Depending on where they were bred, most standard-sized male adults will stand between inches, while female adult German shepherds typically reach inches in height from paw to shoulder. Below is our height chart for German shepherd puppies you can use to estimate your puppy's height at each age milestone based on his starting or current height. It also includes the average percentage of adult height reached each age milestone. If your puppy's weight is outside the guidelines, it may be less of an issue than you think. Puppy weights can vary greatly depending on breed, genetics, and other factors included on this page. While ensuring your puppy receives proper nutrition and exercise is essential, several factors can influence their weight. One way to determine your puppy's adult weight is to check with your breeder. They can make an educated guess as to what your furry friend will weigh once they reach adulthood. A reputable breeder should have a good understanding of their dog's genetics and be able to provide insight into the typical size range of their litter. This information can give you a rough estimate of what weight you can expect for your German shepherd as they grow older. Another factor to consider when determining the adult weight of your pup is their parents' size, and again the breeder can give you much more information on this. You can also speak with your veterinarian about your puppy's overall health and development, and they may be able to provide some insight into their expected adult size. It's important to avoid becoming too fixated on your puppy's weight if they fall outside the standard guidelines. Don't worry if your puppy is a little bigger or smaller than listed here, and if you still want to determine their adult weight, you can also use the puppy weight chart for a large or giant breed dog here. Thankfully, German Shepherds fit into that category because they are very intelligent and quick learners. This includes house training , crate training , basic obedience commands as well as learning tricks. We recommend attending a puppy kindergarten class as part of your German Shepherd puppy socialization strategy. Once your pup knows their basic obedience commands, you can enroll them in Schutzhund training aka IPO. Partnership and teamwork between yourself and your dog are the basis for this type of training. Note that the Schutzhund environment is not a place for dogs with aggression issues, neither towards other dogs nor people! If they pass that initial level which includes a temperament test, they can move on to IPO 2 minimum age 19 months and IPO 3 minimum age 20 months. That said, protection dog trainers recommend starting training classes that include bitework and high jumps once your German Shepherd puppy is 12 months old. Dutch and Czech are two other languages that commands are frequently taught in. Stanley, my former long-haired GSD dog walking client, started going to Schutzhund training when he was a little over 12 months old. His owners practiced commands in German with him on a daily basis, and I remember getting a print out of his German commands as they asked me to use them on our walks as well. Lots, ha! German Shepherds need a minimum of 2 hours of physical exercise per day, but generally speaking, the more exercise you can provide your GSD with, the more they will thrive. Remember, German Shepherds are high-energy, athletic dogs bred to be active all day long, especially if they come from a working line! Physical Exercise Ideas for German Shepherds As far as physical exercise, this can be a mix of walks, runs, bike rides, fetch and playtime. This is Nala, one of my former pet sitting clients. She was crazy about frisbees and balls. One of my favorite ways of increasing the energy and calories a dog burns on a regular walk or hike is by using a doggie backpack. Mental Stimulation for German Shepherds Besides providing a good physical workout, dog backpacks also burn mental energy. As you probably know, bored dogs can quickly become destructive as they figure out ways of entertaining themselves. For example, chewing up your furniture and shoes, scratching doors, raiding your kitchen trash can or digging up your flower beds. So do yourself a favor and make sure your GSD gets plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog, and that applies to German Shepherds as much as it does to any other dog breed! Former GSD client Remi pooped after a long walk.
