Welcome to Yare Valley Labradoodles Our love for our labradoodles is so great we decided to create this website to share them with as many people as possible. Our first labradoodle came to live with us nearly 16 years ago and completely stole our hearts. Australian labradoodles are labrador retriever crossed with a poodle with the addition of other permitted breeds through the generations, including the soft coated Irish wheaten terrier, Portuguese water dog and the cocker spaniel. These infusions have resulted in dogs who are consistent in size, coat type and temperament. None of our pups are spayed or neutered before leaving for their new homes. This practice is only carried out by commercial breeders. I am not against spaying and neutering, at an appropriate age, but carrying this out before the dogs have reached maturity is not in their best interest. I also feel it is essential for family pets to be born and raised in a family home, as opposed to commercial kennels. We would never use distance selling or couriers as we view homing our puppies as a two way process that has to be right for both families. We therefore always meet potential puppy families and have them visit our home to meet our dogs. Once we offer you a puppy we ask for a 10 per cent deposit with the balance payable prior to collecting your puppy. Our puppies are only sold as family pets, as are the pups from matings with Waffle. Therefore no puppy shall be used for breeding, without our prior written consent. My ex-mother-in-law turned 90 in March .Her dog had passed away a few months earlier. She was set on a dog who did not need to have hair cuts. Kim, my daughter, now goes every week to take her shopping, and on outings. I had done my bossy thing and told her to convince her to get a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog. She isn't able to clean house well anymore, she has allergies, even though she denies it. Plus there was talk about going into a senior residential community, which I know she would love. Shes a social person. She tried getting 2 cats who needed a home. It didnt work, rubbing on her legs the one was going to knock her down, and they were getting into her many houseplants. I dont even want to think about the litter box situation, older home and plumbing and she was convinced you can just scoop it into the commode. In the outings with Kim she kept pointing at cute little dogs. Kim kept pointing out, Granda those dogs have cute hair cuts, it doesn't grow that way. Kim wisely suggested bringing over a different dog of the varieties she could borrow from us. Then she could meet them see what they are like and maybe keep one. Kim took Bubba first. He hopped in her lap. Before you know it shes asking if he would sleep with her. She never had a dog sleep in the bed due to the fur issue. Bubba slept with us. Kim said she wasn't planning to leave him, she will bring him back and bring the next dog. Edna asked to keep him. So Bubba was her 90th birthday present from us. He is not formally retired but will be as soon as our new red male is old enough and passes his health testing. Bubba adores her. A proper diet, adequate physical activity, and a grooming routine are key to keeping your dog happy and healthy. Here we highlighted the most important tips for taking care of your Bullmastiff Shepherd mix. Food and Diet In general, large breed Bullmastiff cross German Shepherd dogs must be fed a low-fat and high-protein diet. Their food must also be high in energy since they are energetic but just enough to avoid unnecessary weight gain. In terms of their daily food quantity requirement, a puppy between 2 and 3 months may need 1 to 1. Choosing the best dog food from the vast selection of options on store shelves can be challenging. Cleaning and Grooming In terms of grooming, their needs vary depending on their coat and daily activities. So, the best hygiene routine for your German Bullmastiff is the one that is specific to its needs. For short and medium-coated Bullmastiff Shepherds, brushing every 3 to 7 days avoids matting and reduces shedding, which is typical for Shepherd hybrids. A monthly bath is also sufficient to keep them clean. For long-coated Bullmastiff Shepherds, they need daily brushing. Perhaps, you also need to visit the dog salon at least thrice a year to remove their undercoat, depending on how fast it grows. Other dog care routines, such as nail trimming and ear cleaning, should not exceed once every two months, while their teeth need to be brushed three times a week. Once they grow older, they can be really stubborn. While training, expose your dog to sensations like noise, smell, and touch. Also, introduce them to other animals and young children. This trains the territorial German Bullmastiff to be gentle and not see them as threats. For large German Shepherd mixes, a minute exercise is needed daily to reduce their pent-up energy. Some activities you can enjoy together include running, walking, or playing fetch at the dog park. When they get older and start suffering from joint pain, exercise is actually a great way to prevent some discomfort. Opposite to that, some German Shepherds do have medium or even long coats. Their fur has several layers, so you need to groom them often. Some German Shepherd features will certainly remain, so be prepared for a bit more care than a purebred Bullmastiff would need. Give him a monthly bath, and this should be enough. Just make sure you brush him before a bath. This is a good trick to prevent shedding. In the case of a medium-length coat, you can expect to brush your pooch every other day. Bathe him when needed, but try to make this happen at least twice a month. If you end up with a dog that has long layers and a thick undercoat, prepare to brush him daily. You may even want to take him to a groomer once or twice a year to keep his fur untangled. Also, it would help if you bathe your dog regularly. If you want to have a good pup, then you need to teach him how to behave. Socialization, care, and proper training are the keys to a well-mannered dog. This is considered the adequate age when a puppy should join your family. So, why is training so necessary for a Mastiff Shepherd? Bullmastiffs are strong and stubborn dogs. Despite their mild temperament, they can easily overpower a human. German Shepherds, on the other hand, are high-energy dogs, and they can be quite destructive if left unattended. When you mix these two breeds, you get a large dog that will want to cuddle and run around simultaneously. The worst part is that you can hardly control such a big canine. This has to start the moment the dog joins your family. Either Bullmastiffs or German Shepherds would make a great watchdog. They are also considered excellent working dogs. Try to channel their energy into training. It is better to invest some money rather than deal with the destruction this mixed breed can make. These are huge dogs that can be somewhat unpredictable. You need to dedicate a lot of dogtime to them. Just like with any large breed, you have to ensure that you give him proper training and care. Also, have your vet on speed dial. They were bred by gamekeepers for their strength, size, speed, and working ability. Bullmastiff German Shepherd Mixes Come in a Variety of Appearances This mixed breed is large, not unlike the parents, but can be quite variable in appearance. They can be black and tan, fawn, brindle, or black with short or medium-length coats. They could have the sturdy, muscular build of the Bullmastiff or the leaner, athletic shepherd build. They could have a short muzzle, a long shepherd-like muzzle, or one in between. This mixed breed can take on the appearance of either or both parent breeds. This is where the genetics and history of the purebred parents come into play. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and full of energy, while the Bullmastiff is more docile and affectionate. Bullmastiffs and German Shepherds do share some similar traits. Both are powerful, devoted, headstrong, and courageous. You can expect these dogs to be watchful over their family and territory and make excellent guard dogs. Excellent training from puppyhood can make this mixed breed an excellent, loyal, and protective guardian and companion for many dog owners. You will need to be cautious with this mixed breed around small children due to their large size. This will depend heavily on which parent it takes after. Crosses that mostly take their coat after the Bullmastiff parent will have a smooth and short coat. They could be brindled or solid-colored and will either be fawn, red, or red fawn. On the other hand, the mix that takes its coat after the GSD parent will have medium to long hair and a double coat. However, the ones that take after the German Shepherd parent often inherit their speed as well. On average, purebred GSDs can reach top speeds of 30 miles per hour. Exercise Requirement Bullmastiff-GSD crosses are high-energy dogs that need both physical and mental stimulation in order to thrive. At a minimum, they will need 30 minutes of vigorous exercise per day. Ideally, they would get an hour of exercise and access to a fenced-in space where they can play and explore independently. German Shepherd-Bullmastiffs also need plenty of opportunities to sharpen their intellect and natural canine abilities. They will benefit from daily training sessions, puzzle games , and household chores. Trainability Bullmastiffs are not known for their intelligence. It may take them up to 80 repetitions to master a new command. In contrast, German Shepherds belong to the first tier of canine intelligence. No matter which parent the GSD-Bullmastiff cross takes after, however, it is expected to be highly trainable. Temperament The German Shepherd-Bullmastiff mix is a wonderful household companion. They are affectionate with family and can be good with young children and other animals are given proper training and socialization. They are alert to threats and wary of strangers. They will, however, warm up to guests when properly introduced. Possibly among the best outcomes of crossing a Bullmastiff with a German Shepherd is that the offspring are often less vocal than purebred GSDs. Health Like its parents, the Bullmastiff-German Shepherd mix can be prone to bone and joint issues. Additionally, these dogs can suffer from bloat, which is a life-threatening and painful condition of the abdomen. Lifespan The German Shepherd-Bullmastiff can be expected to live about years. If it takes more after the GSD parent, its lifespan could be between 12 and 14 years. But those that take mostly after the Bullmastiff parent could have a shorter life expectancy of 7 to 9 years. Any GSD-Bullmastiff cross can live much longer when given a proper diet and plenty of opportunities to exercise. Of course, having good genes is essential. Usually, the coat of this mixed breed is thick and either lengthy or short. Typically this hybrid breed is of two kinds, and their grooming differs. If your dog is more like a german shepherd, it must get on-and-off slicker brushes touching its coat. But bullmastiffs neither need grooming nor shedding. These hounds have short and oily coats but need bathing on-and-off to smell if they skip baths. Yeah, this question is pretty much fair, right! So if that is the case, make sure you brush them often and bathe once a week as well. Significantly, you must also take your pup to groomers to remove the undercoat twice a year. Medium length coat grooming Your dog is not forced to be groomed daily but does it seldom if it has a medium-length coat. You can use a pin brush and comb your tyke and make your doggie bath whenever needed. Twice a month will be sufficient. Short coat grooming An easy coat to be groomed, though. Monthly baths are more than sufficient for short-coated dogs. Better groom your pooch before taking a bath with a quick brush. The uniqueness of a mixed breed can make it fairly difficult to predict the future temperament, appearance, grooming requirements, and mature weight of your dog. This is where background breed history and purebred characteristic knowledge will come in handy. To understand mixed breed dogs properly, you first must understand what owning a purebred dog entails. This makes their temperaments and physical characteristics more predictable. Your mixed-breed dog will be unique in many ways, with unknown traits and brand new characteristics. If you know what breeds have gone into the genetic makeup of your mixed-breed pooch, you can gain a deeper understanding of what benefits you can enjoy or challenges you can expect in the future. According to canismajor. So, for a Bullmastiff German Shepherd mix, you can expect traits like protectiveness and intelligence to appear. Every dog is different, and upbringing overrides everything. The way that you train and raise your dog will have a far greater overall impact on their temperament and behavioral characteristics than their breed makeup will. Dogs are highly-attuned pack animals that learn quickly from a young age. From the second you take home a new puppy, their mind is absorbing everything around them and helping to make them into the dog that they will ultimately become. While it is true that some dogs are naturally more protective than others both German Shepherds and Bullmastiffs fall into this category , training and conditioning trump all. Is training is honestly all that important? Why should obedience training be taken so seriously? Proper training, socialization, and care are essential. You should never leave a large, powerful, and intelligent mixed-breed like this to his own devices. This is a big dog that will likely want to work. German Shepherds can be very high-energy dogs with a desire to do a job and knack for getting into mischief when left unattended. Bullmastiffs can be strong-willed and are physically powerful both in stature and in their physical muscular makeup. Bullmastiff German Shepherd Mixes are not well-suited for novice dog owners. Be prepared to devote plenty of time and energy into training and socializing this mix from the minute it enters your life. For example: Bullmastiffs are classified as working dogs and respond well to most standard training methods. German Shepherds are also a working breed. They should begin their training from the instant you bring them home. According to Cynthia L. Olson from Petlifetoday , without structure and training, they can become difficult to manage as they grow. Since a Bullmastiff German Shepherd mix will contain elements from both the Shepherd and the Mastiff breed, focusing your training efforts toward the well-known mannerisms of these working and guarding breeds is wise. The temperament of every dog will vary, and while training and upbringing must be taken into consideration, in general, this mix will be devoted, eager to please, and competent. This mix has the potential to have balanced energy, a keen mind, and a patient attitude. The spunky and malleable nature of the German Shepherd blends well with the strong-headed and mellow tendencies of the Bullmastiff. This means that your Bullmastiff German Shepherd mix should ultimately be well-rounded, easy to train, and extraordinarily loyal. You can expect a Bullmastiff German Shepherd mix to have a black and tan coat and be fairly large. Everything after that will depend on the background of your specific puppy or dog. According to the AKC , Bullmastiffs are inches tall at the shoulder, weigh anywhere from pounds, and have a life expectancy of years. Their coat has a black mask, can be fawn, brindle, red, and should be short and smooth. Alternatively, the AKC states that German Shepherds stand from inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between .They have medium or long black and tan coats with erect ears when fully mature and a well-defined muzzle. Your mixed dog will most likely have some combination of all of these features and could look more like either the Mastiff or the Shepherd breed. It will all depend on your specific pup. In summary, appearance-wise you can expect your Bullmastiff German Shepherd mix to be a large dog that has a medium-length coat and black and tan coloration in any number of patterns. Bullmastiffs are short-coated dogs with minimal shedding, though their coats can have a good bit of oil and they do get smelly if they skip too many baths. German shepherds can have short, medium, or long coats and require significantly more grooming. If your dog has more Shepherd-like tendencies, they may need a lot more grooming. If your dog has a short coat Short coats are by far the easiest to groom. A simple monthly bath is often enough to keep your dog clean. You should always groom short-haired dogs before a bath with a quick brush down. Weekly brushing a short coat is also a good idea to reduce possible shedding. If your dog has a medium-length coat Medium-coated breeds require a moderate amount of brushing. Matting can sometimes occur in short coats. Brushing every other day with a bristle or pin brush is a good idea. Bathing should be done twice a month as needed. If your dog has a long coat German Shepherds sometimes have long coats with a thick undercoat. If this is the case for your pup, be prepared to brush them daily. They may also need to have their undercoat removed twice a year at the groomers. Bathing should be done as needed, if not weekly. Both Bullmastiffs and German Shepherds often suffer from large breed issues hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, arthritis, and osteochondrosis dissecans. Osteochondrosis dissecans is a condition that develops in fast-growing puppies. This video can help you better understand what health issues large breed dogs often face. German Shepherd Mastiff mix puppies tend to be larger than lots of other breeds as puppies, so you can assume they will grow to be pretty large dogs. Their full-grown height and weight will depend on the gender and what characteristics they get from their parents. For example, a purebred male German Shepherd will grow to around 26 inches and weigh as much as 90 pounds and females will be around 2 inches shorter on average and weigh up to 70 pounds. Mastiff males and females will grow to between 28 and 36 inches, and males can weigh up to pounds and females will weigh up to pounds. A German Shepherd Mastiff mix could end up being as tall as the biggest German Shepherd and pretty heavy like a Mastiff. You should be wary of over feeding your Shepherd Mastiff mix because they can be prone to weight gain. How long do German Shepherd Bullmastiff mixes live? German Shepherd Bullmastiff mixes will typically live anywhere between nine and 13 years. These dogs are relatively large dogs and unfortunately, larger dogs tend to have shorter life spans than smaller breeds. Lifestyle and illness will play a part in this though. A well looked after German Shepherd Mastiff mix that does not suffer from any life-threatening diseases, should live a long and happy life of up to 13 years. Fortunately, mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier on average than pure breeds. That being said, there are some common health issues that both German Shepherds and Bullmastiffs can get during their lifetime that may be passed down to their offspring. These include: Cherry eye. Goliath is the one standing up - 2 months Goliath - 3 months David - 3 months Goliath on the left and David on the other side obviously : - 5 months Hi, I thought it could be fun to share the experience I have with my two puppies. They are now not far from 5 months old. I have not weighed them recently but they seem to be 3 times the size they were when I got them 2 months old. In that time they were 4. They have now lost all their front teeth but still have their puppy canines and wide molars are growing out at the back. Their mum is a black and brindel Bullmastiff very light and agile body type with a broad head. She looked more like a huge boxer with a huge face and snout. Very friendly dog and very energetic. The dad is a Black German Shepherd from what I remember of him. He just dashed in the house like a hurricane, stared at me for a few seconds, licked the tip of my nose and dashed out again. I think that was an outdoor dog that was not happy to stay inside. They were brought up in a farm environment and are not triggered by livestock behaviour: not even tempted by chasing a chick. They are from a litter of 3 : 2 boys and a girl; the girl had already left, so I picked up both of them Only wanted one but couldn't make my mind on which one to choose, so I took both. They have completly different behaviour and looks. It seems that one of them Goliath has picked up more German type, and the other one David has more the Bullmastiff type. They can look very alike, and people can't see any difference in them, but I, seeing them every day, can clearly see it. Goliath, has a blacker face, and his snout is more pointed whereas David has a square snout. Also, they don't behave the same way. When one would trade his life for food Goliath the other one would die without cuddles, affection and attention David. If I would try and cuddle Goliath who enjoys strokes and attention also David would push him out of my reach and take his place He would climb on me if I would ignore him and keep going for this brother. They have this weird behaviour also: absolutly not afraid of fire. Goliath even ate hot ashes, ones that popped out of the fire place, and didn't seem to be bothered. Also eats peat and turf which is used for fire. I keep having to get it out of their reach. What strikes me the most is their colour. Their parents were both black or dark brown and they have this toffee colour. However we, at the moment, live in Irland, so they are being used to the rainy Irish sun, but sleep inside at night time. They have access to a huge garden with no fence, so they are free to roam around field and neighbourg gardens. They have never been far, even if they have lost their way a couple of time when they were tiny puppies it was only three houses away. There is a lot of livestock in the surrounding fields and have not reported any issues yet. Well, this description is long, but it what came out of my head when I thought of a way to describing them. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Vocality level 1 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. He is willing to please, although he retains a stubborn streak. He is very good with children. Most are moderately friendly toward strangers. Although some can be aggressive with strange dogs, the breed is quite good with other pets. Upkeep The Bulldog appreciates a daily outing but cannot tolerate hot humid weather, which can be deadly. He should not be expected to jog or walk great distances, or to jump from any heights. Most Bulldogs cannot swim. Most Bulldogs wheeze and snore, and some drool. Coat care is minimal, but facial wrinkles and any folds around the tail should be cleaned daily. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarean deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms. History With the most distinctive mug in dogdom, the Bulldog has an equally distinctive history. Some Bulldogs were also set against bears for bear baiting, purely for entertainment. In , bull baiting was outlawed, and a new phase began for the Bulldog. By all rights, the breed should have become extinct, except that it had gained so many ardent admirers that they set out to rescue the Bulldog by selecting against ferocity while still maintaining—and often accentuating—its distinctive physical characteristics. Its tough steadfast persona led it to be identified as a national symbol of England. Its amiable clownish personality belies its appearance, and the Bulldog is a popular pet. Related Content.
Puppies German Shepherd puppies are incredibly playful. So how do you play with a German Shepherd puppy? This article will examine the best way to play and entertain your German Shepherd puppy, providing example games to play and activities to do. The best way to play with a German Shepherd puppy is through short bursts of low-impact physical activity. This will keep their growing bones and joints safe from injury and malformation. Additionally, play games that sharpen their motors skills and hone their natural abilities. All dogs have a maximum tolerance for exercise, and playtime counts towards that limit. Most will play for as long as you allow them. Thus, you need to pay attention and keep them from overexertion, especially during activities that involve plenty of physical movement. In general, young dogs should have two sessions of exercise per day where each session is about 5 minutes per month of age. So, a German Shepherd puppy of around 2 months old should only get 10 minutes of playtime twice a day while a 6-month-old pup can tolerate two minute sessions. By the time your GSD is a year old, they should be able to tolerate hour-long sessions of play or exercise. Keep in mind, however, that these are general guidelines. You need to keep an eye on your dog and determine their own tolerance to avoid serious consequences like overheating and overexertion. Like children, individual dogs have different preferences. Use play as a means to strengthen their motor skills, nurture their sense of curiosity, and build their confidence. The best toys for young German Shepherds are interactive ones that stimulate their senses. Especially exciting are treat dispensers and squeaky toys while teething toys provide tons of comfort. They also love balls that they can grasp and chase after. They also love playing with people and other animals. Doing this often will help prove each of these commands and ensure they will obey no matter the situation. Have fun with the Obedience Shuffle by randomly asking for each command and rewarding your dog every time they obey. Make it increasingly difficult for them by adding distractions in between. Hide-and-Seek Hide-and-Seek is an excellent game to play with your German Shepherd puppy because it requires some concentration, sniffing, and running. It also primes them to think of you as the best reward. To play this, ask your dog to stay while you hide. Release them from their stay position and respond with excitement and praises when they find you. Hide in easy-to-find spots at first and find more difficult hiding places as your pup picks up on the object of the game. You can start by keeping your pup in a down position as they watch you hide the treats. When they understand the point of the game, you can make it more challenging by keeping them in another room and letting them in only when all the treats are hidden. It also requires very little space and involves more concentration and nose work. To play the shell game, take 3 cups and some treats, and sit across from your dog. Place the cups upside down on the floor and keep a treat under only one. Shuffle the cups before arranging them in a row. Turn over the first one your pup touches. If they get the right one, let them have the treat. If not, re-shuffle the cups and play again. Find-and-Retrieve Find-and-Retrieve is not just a game of obedience and concentration. This game involves teaching your dog the proper names of things, finding those things on command, and handing them over to you. To play this game, start by teaching your dog the name of one toy. Then, make the game more difficult by asking them to retrieve the ball from other places. Here are other things you can do to interact with your puppy, strengthen your bond, and help them to develop physically, mentally, and emotionally: Walking Walking can be a good way for your GSD pup to learn more about the world outside of your home. Allow young pups to walk at their own pace and try not to be too harsh on the lead. Let them stop to sniff and interact with whatever they might find interesting. This will form a huge part of their socialization. German Shepherds typically like water if they are exposed to it and learn how fun it can be. Swimming is also an excellent way to have fun with your growing dog since it is easy on the bones and joints. Being in water will also help strengthen muscles for even better skeletal development. Puzzle Toys Puzzle toys for dogs are not only excellent for mental stimulation but also for independent play. Depending on the toy, it could also help prime your German Shepherd for nose work, combat boredom, and control their impulses. They can compete in these companion sports as early as 6 months old or you can simply join local clubs to engage in these activities for fun. This helps avoid issues like hip and elbow dysplasia in the future. Until your German Shepherd has developed into adulthood, you should generally avoid activities that involve plenty of jumping. Staircases and other steep angles are safe enough for regular use but not as a means to exercise. Additionally, when running or walking, opt for turf and soil rather than concrete. Final Thoughts Discovering the best ways to play with your German Shepherd puppy will help you develop a strong bond and learn to communicate with one another. These games will also help stimulate their intellect and develop a love for learning. Learning how to discipline your GSD puppy correctly will teach them to respect your leadership and stay on their best behavior. This extends beyond pedigree research, sound breeding practices, and health testing and into how we raise our puppies. Everyone loves puppies, they are so cute and sweet, but did you know there are important developmental periods your puppy will go through before ever joining your household? In our desire to raise the most behaviorally sound, confident, and stable puppies possible we implemented the game changing Puppy Culture puppy raising, training, and socialization protocols almost seven years ago and are extremely pleased with the long term benefits our puppies, and their owners, get from this evidence based program. To learn more about Puppy Culture watch this video. We have also developed our own cleanliness training program to ensure our puppies learn house training foundations and are easy to house train in the new home and Crate Conditioning program that focuses on creating confidence while confined and ensuring our puppies are easy to crate train. During this time puppies needs consist of a caring mother, warmth, grippy and dry bedding, and lots of time for the hard work of growing. Our work is lite during these day since GSDs are excellent mothers, consisting mainly of ensuring the puppy box is warm, dry, and draft free and the dam has all the privacy she wants. Highlights of our work during the first 21 days. Stable puppies have Early Neurological Stimulation started on day 3, puppies who are struggling in any way have Simulated Maternal Stimulation 3. As soon as puppies start urinating on their own a designated potty zone is introduced as the earliest foundation for our cleanliness training process. Dam is allowed as much privacy and rest with her puppies as she desires. We start conditioning the puppies to enjoy grooming by gently stroking them with a soft human baby hairbrush. Nails are trimmed weekly from week 1 through send home. Box is kept clean, warm, and private to ensure our dams are happy. A content and relaxed dam is our goal early on. Bottles are offered to puppies in very large litters, or any puppy who needs a bit of help gaining weight. Very large litters will need a larger area, this area also has a baby potty zone. One of our four foundation females, Eyleen. Zap making it clear she would like privacy with her newborns Andeigh and her puppies. By week four our puppies are up on their feet, walking, starting to interact and play with each other, and the critical socialization period is underway. The dam is needing to spend more time away from her puppies, and the puppies start learning about how to be a dog from our skilled, puppy loving, nannies. The nannies role in socializing the puppies to the ways of dogs is invaluable. While the tasks and work a skilled breeder does are too many to list, here are some highlights. Puppies are moved to a larger, more interesting area, and cleanliness training continues with a designated toilet area. Puppies are offered solid food Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy three times per day dam can still nurse the puppies at will in large puppy pans. Group feeding at this age fosters enthusiastic eating. Regular socialization opportunities with our skilled puppy raising nanny dogs, and with us. Grooming soft brushing and nail trims continue. Puppy Culture work continues please look over the link for more info on the PC work. In the heart of the house the puppies have more opportunities to become accustomed to household sights, sounds, and have lots of opportunities to socialize with us and the nannies. Puppies have meals offered three times per day now, at first in a puppy pan, and in later weeks in individual bowls in crates. We are continuing to work with the Puppy Culture protocols and this work will continue right through until send home, as will cleanliness training, and socialization. Puppies build confidence through a rotation of age appropriate experiences Puppies learn that a caregiver leaving them is normal, as the dam comes and goes at will, teaching puppies to trust in caregiver return. At week four puppies continue learning to prefer being clean by using a potty zone. Skilled puppy loving nannies help the puppies learn trust different dogs. It is not enough that puppies are exposed to things, they must form happy and positive associations with these things to feel confident about them in the future. So we curate our puppies daily lives, showing them exactly what is age appropriate and ensuring they learn only what is beneficial for them, this work is laid out for us in the Puppy Culture protocols. Our Crate Conditioning program is started. This work focuses on creating calm and confident feelings around crates and confinement in a curated and incremental manner. Puppies also have access to the outdoors via the puppy patio and so can habituate to the ambient noises of our location livestock, wildlife, road noise, human noises, mowers and tractors, etc and since their puppy corral is in the heart of the house they are also exposed to all the noises of our busy household. While it is not beneficial for puppies to be pushed into learning skills like an adult dog, there is benefit to curated learning of some important life skills, and further as part of the Enrichment Effect we focus on helping puppies learn how to communicate needs to us in a socially acceptable way Manding , to love to problem solve and seek out novel experiences Enrichment Seekers with us and their environment, and how to use their behavior as a path to reinforcement. Names for your toys Playing the Name That Toy game: This game for German Shepherds begins with only one toy if your puppy or dog is new to the game. As you play with the toy and toss it for retrieval, begin to name the toy as your dog picks up the item. You can name the toy whatever you want, but remember to always use the same name. When your puppy learns the name of one toy reliably, give the next toy a name. You can even begin to introduce new toys that you bring home with their name almost immediately when your puppy catches onto the Name That Toy game! I like to use my laundry basket and a small pile of towels. Use your treats to lure your puppy through, around, over, and under your homemade obstacle course to burn off their energy. As your puppy learns the routine, you can increase the speed to use up even more of those puppy zoomies! Even adult German Shepherds love this game, especially on a rainy or snowy day. Over time, increase the number of obstacles you create on your course, always keeping in mind your environment and staying safe with your dog. Some puppies can even strain their necks and backs with a vigorous game of Tug-of-War. And, even my adult German Shepherd who weighs almost 90 pounds has suffered a neck pull when someone played a rough game of tug with her. Playing these common games too frequently, especially with a puppy, could tear cartilage, damage their tendons, and cause microscopic tears in the muscle which take longer to heal. Furthermore, even if you have a full-grown adult German Shepherd, the quick starts and stops of chasing a toy to Fetch place immense strain on their joints and may damage them over time. Limit your games of Fetch and Tug-of-War games to a couple of times a week, preferably for no more than minutes. Aug 14, Share German Shepherd Dogs GSDs are highly intelligent and athletic dogs, and they need to be both mentally and physically stimulated to stay happy and healthy. This can be achieved through regular, directed interaction with your pooch through training and games or, even better, a combination of both. While training is an essential aspect of raising a well-behaved and healthy German Shepherd, games are also vital to their overall health. From physical, athletic activities to mind games for German Shepherds, there are so many to choose from to keep your GSD stimulated. Read on for 12 of our favorite games to play with your German Shepherd! The 12 Best Games for German Shepherds 1. Frisbee Image Credit: kscholl, Pixabay Another classic game for playing outdoors, frisbee takes fetch to another level. Begin by throwing the disc short distances at first and getting your GSD to bring it back to you, and then gradually increase the distance. You can also roll the frisbee vertically on the ground for them to chase. Fetch Fetch is a classic game to play with any dog, but there is a huge variety of ways to play it. Simply throwing a ball or stick and getting your GSD to bring it back is not as easy as it seems, so it is a great opportunity for training. For younger dogs, you may need to use a treat or reward to get your dog to release the ball, and this can take practice. For large and athletic dogs like GSDs, try to use a toy that travels farther for a more extreme version of this game. Puzzle Games German Shepherds are highly intelligent animals, so mind games are important for them too. There are a ton of puzzle toys on the market, most of which involve hiding treats in closed compartments for your pooch to find. Your GSD will need to figure out how to open the various compartments to access the treat, and you can increase the difficulty as they progress. Begin on the easiest level and move up from there. The game can be played indoors or outdoors, so it is great for any living situation or age of dog. Once they catch on to the game, you can make the hiding spots more widespread and difficult. Hide and Seek Hide and seek is not only fun for kids, but it can also be an exciting game to include your GSD in! In the beginning, you may need two people, but once your GSD learns the game, you can play it just with your pooch. Begin by hiding in easy places, and give your pooch plenty of praise when they find you. Gradually find harder places to hide. This game is not only fun but will also teach your pooch patience and obedience. Even though these classes are generally worth it, you can do it at home too. By simply using common items in your home like chairs, boxes, towels, and toys, you can set up your own agility course and teach your GSD to walk through it. However, if done properly, the game will not make your dog aggressive and can be a great method for training. The game should be initiated by you only, and the toy available to your dog only during the game. Also, any skin contact, biting, or nipping ends the game straight away, and you must walk away with the toy immediately. Ring Stacking For advanced, intelligent dogs that have mastered other puzzle games, ring stacking is a great new challenge. Your dog will need to have mastered basic commands in order for them to play, and even then, it may take a while to master. Magic Cups Magic cups is a fun game to play indoors when the weather is bad. All you need are three plastic cups and a treat or a small handful of kibble. While this game is not physical in any way, it is a great way to stimulate your GSD mentally. Place the three cups upside down with treats hidden underneath one. Let your dog see which one has the treats. Once they find the treat, shuffle the cups and let your dog try again. Once your pooch gets the hang of it, you can make the game harder by not letting your dog see you shuffle the cups or by simply adding more cups into the mix. You can train your GSD to bring you individual toys on command, providing great mental stimulation for your pooch. Begin with just one toy, and toss it for your dog to retrieve while vocalizing the name of the toy. Once your dog learns the name reliably, you can add other toys into the mix. Soccer All dogs love balls, and German Shepherds are no different. Soccer is great because it uses large balls that your pooch cannot run away with and stimulates their hunting and tracking skills. You can play the game with your pooch in mid-field trying to get the ball from you or put them in front of the goalposts and teach them to stop the ball without biting it! Soccer is great exercise and an excellent training method for your GSD. Once they get this basic routine down, you can make it more challenging by making them stop mid-run or throwing the toy and making them wait for your command before running to fetch it. Final Thoughts Some games are great for exercising your German Shepherd, while others are ideal for mental stimulation. Some are great for both! These pups are incredibly intelligent and capable canines who are ready to work. And German Shepherd puppies are too cute! Remember, you can get any kind of dog, including a GSD, from shelters and rescues, so always adopt! They tend to be one-family pets, meaning they can be suspicious of strangers. Although absolutely gorgeous, Shepherds are shedders to the max. Prepare for a snow globe of hair to poof off your pup any time you give them a big snuggle, which will be more often than not. When you first get your puppy, playing may consist of nipping due to their herding background. When your GSD is fully grown, they may love to wrestle around and forget how big they are. These pups are always up for snuggling with others, including kids and other pets. Softies Who Are Also Busy Bodies If you want a German Shepherd puppy in your life, you have to really want your dog to be a part of every little bit of your daily routine. Morning showers? Your pup will want to sit right outside to make sure you rinse off the soap. Your bed? Highly intelligent and curious, Shepherds want to know what is going on all of the time. If you have a German Shepherd who plays rough, you might hesitate to stop him because you might be interrupting his fun. For the most part, you would be right not to stop the play. That means you need to know when to step in and limit how rough they can get during play fighting. Otherwise, they will be incompatible with smaller breeds or children. Recent research has shown that both veterinarians and the public believe that different dog breeds differ in their sensitivity to pain. The results of this survey included the German Shepherd. In contrast, veterinarians disagreed with this view, claiming that body size was just a minor indicator of pain sensitivity. But whatever your view, German Shepherds love to play rough. Once you learn where the boundaries are, you must be assertive and step in no matter how much fun your pooch might seem to be having. You do! The solution is different for each context and is detailed in the respective subheading. German Shepherds are intelligent and receptive to training. Remember, they have the strength to herd livestock yet have historically aided in nurturing and securing them. The non-negotiable aspect of this is proper socializing. Fortunately, I have a complete guide on how to train a German Shepherd puppy. Pro Tip! Experts recommend adopting a dog of the opposite gender. For the happiest dogs and the safest homes, opposite-sex dogs almost always get along better. Many same-sex combinations will fight as they want to be the dominant pet. Get comfortable putting your German Shepherd in an effective timeout a few times. Since GSDs are intelligent, it will take less than four timeouts before understanding where the limit is. An effective timeout means marking the behavior at the precise moment it occurs, and the duration should be no more than a minute for adult dogs and just a few seconds for puppies. Letting your German Shepherd know that there are limits is not the challenging part. The challenging part is figuring out where the boundaries are. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. You can protect your dog with a microchip, but there are other steps you can take. The Fi GPS tracking dog collar helps you keep your dog safe. German Shepherds have amazing potential and tend to do extremely well in training thanks to their drive and intelligence. However, they require consistent training and handling since they can be mouthy, chase prey, or become overprotective without the right training. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. The typical lifespan of a GSD is 7 to 10 years. Other Potential Expenses Owning a dog is already comparable to parenthood. German Shepherds, much like any other dog breed, have other needs that go beyond food, water, and shelter. Your dog will be watched over, fed, and socialized with other dogs. Grooming Services: For your GSD to have a well-maintained coat and appearance, you should take them to a professional grooming salon. They will be cleaned, trimmed, and pampered as they deserve. Emergency Treatment: Dogs grow up so fast. As your German Shepherd puppy gets older, they are more prone to health issues like hip dysplasia. Sudden injuries can also happen that will require immediate medical attention and treatment. This will allow them to join various dog shows and other competitions. You will spend more on replacing them rather than having good products that can last for a longer time. Purchase supplies in bulk. When buying food or treats for your pup, make sure to stock up by buying them in bulk. This can save you a lot of money than buying small bags of kibble or cans of wet food. Keep your dog in excellent shape. To avoid expensive veterinary bills, keep your German Shepherd puppy fit and healthy. Aside from the financial aspect, make sure you are prepared for the full responsibility of being a German Shepherd puppy owner. Now you know how much German Shepherds cost, are you ready to own one? Share your thoughts in the comments below. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. German Shepherds are considered healthy dogs that can live many years. You must be able to pay for these dogs every month of their lives. For the most part, providing your dog with a lot of exercise and high-quality food will prevent the dog from developing unforeseen health issues. You will need to buy a dog-safe toothpaste, dog-safe shampoo, and certain medications, such as heartworm prevention, to keep your dog healthy its entire life. Not only do you have to feed your German Shepherd a lot of food, but you want to feed your dog food that is high quality and healthy. As long as your dog does not have any known illnesses or issues, you should not have to pay monthly prices. At the minimum, you should take your German Shepherd for an annual visit, assuming it is healthy. You also need to pay for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Most of these medications last for 1 to 3 months at a time. It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to get pet insurance. If you are interested in getting health insurance for your new pet, Lemonade offers customizable insurance plans and responsive customer service. If you do not want to pay for pet insurance, you can simply set up a savings account instead. So long as you have a house and a yard for your dog to play, the home environment is generally suitable for dogs. Some environmental maintenance things you will need to buy include doggie bags. You need these if you take your dog for a walk or if you have a yard that you have to maintain. You may also need to pay for carpet cleaner, deodorizer, and other items to keep the house clean, despite your heavy shedding German Shepherd. This means that your German Shepherd can help you out when you are in a pinch, but it also means that you need to provide your German Shepherd ample entertainment, or else your dog could become destructive. At the very minimum, you need to buy heavy-duty toys for your German Shepherd. German Shepherds can be really rough with their toys. So, we recommend some sort of brand specific for rough-playing dogs, such as Kong. These boxes will offer toys, treats, and more for your dog, but these boxes can be pretty expensive too. Additional Costs to Factor In In addition to initial costs and monthly payments, there are some other additional factors you need to think about. For starters, obedience training is really important for dogs of this size. Obedience training can be a bit expensive at first, but it will be worth it in the long run. You need to pay for a pet sitter or kennel whenever you go on vacations and your dog does not come with you. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy, you may also have to pay to replace or fix items the puppy damages. Think about accidents or unforeseen illnesses too. These can cost a whole lot in vet visits. Owning a German Shepherd on a Budget If you want a German Shepherd but are worried about destroying your budget, there are ways that you can own one of these wonderful dogs without spending a fortune either. Unfortunately, there is little you can change about the price of these dogs up front, but you can save on the monthly expenses. The most important tip for taking care of a German Shepherd on a budget is to know when to splurge. When it comes to dog food, make sure to select high-quality food. This will be more expensive upfront, but it will ensure that your dog is healthy for as long as possible, resulting in fewer bills. Splurging on heavy-duty toys is another great idea. These toys will cost more at first, but they should last much longer than cheap ones. For instance, there are a lot of coupons and promo codes you can use when purchasing toys, food, and other items for your German Shepherd. Even if you find coupons, only spend money on the essentials. Not to mention, buy crates and beds that are suitable for the dog as it grows. Many people make the mistake of buying crates and beds suitable for the puppy, but the puppy soon outgrows them. The initial cost primarily accounts for the dog itself and any other items required when bringing the dog home for the first time. Even after the German Shepherd has made your home its home, you will still have to pay some pretty hefty bills for the remainder of its life. Although the initial and monthly costs for this dog are a bit high, they are required for this dog to live a happy life. If you cannot afford to provide a German Shepherd the sort of life it needs and deserves, simply do not get a German Shepherd. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with CLAD, type III typically exhibit symptoms such as recurrent ear infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. How to Find Breed Rescues Along with the list mentioned above, many breed rescues list their adoptable dogs on large adoption sites such as:. If you are looking to buy a German Shepherd puppy, then you should find one from a reputable breeder. While these puppies are more expensive, a reputable breeder can guarantee the health and behavior of the puppy. These dogs are prone to genetic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These health issues can be avoided by genetically testing the parents, which is something reputable breeders usually do. When improperly raised puppies might have behavioral issues and can cause a lot of damage if they bite someone. A good breeder will have their dogs pass a temperament test. German Shepherd Dog Price While most dogs in shelters are adults, adopting a German Shepherd is a great way to find a dog without supporting unethical breeding. Sometimes these hardworking shepherd dogs are given up because they are very energetic. Not everyone is able to take care of a dog that needs a lot of attention and exercise. Some people buy a German Shepherd puppy without understanding the work involved in caring for this breed. Why Are They So Expensive? Breeding a healthy and well-behaved German Shepherd puppy is not easy! It is not as simple as crossing German Shepherds together. However, if you want a puppy of good temperament that is genetically healthy, there are other costs involved in the breeding and raising. This is especially important for a German Shepherd. You do not want a puppy that grows up to be aggressive or that suffers from mobility issues due to hip and elbow dysplasia. Papers A paperless German Shepherd puppy will be the cheapest. Typically breeders invest as little as possible in these pups. You get a puppy just how it is, without knowing its pedigree or background. A puppy with health certifications, temperament test results, and registration papers costs more than this. However, those papers will be beneficial not just for you, but also the puppy. This means your puppy meets the breed standard and is a purebred dog. The last thing you want is to buy a German Shepherd wolf-mix thinking it is purebred. Veterinarian Visits Reputable breeders not only genetically health test the parents, but they will also take the puppy to see a vet before 8 weeks for a basic health check. During these visits breeders will also have the puppies vaccinated, dewormed and placed on preventatives. When you buy a German Shepherd puppy from a reputable breeder, they will offer you a health guarantee. Most will also be able to provide you proof that the puppy has passed a temperament test. Training Some breeders also take the time to socialize and train their puppies. Many experienced breeders have a specialized training program that begins the process of potty training and basic obedience. This will mean you have an easier time housetraining your puppy, but you will have to pay for their efforts! These are all good signs that the puppy you are buying is of good quality. This will mean you are more likely to avoid any temperament issues or having to pay for vet visits to diagnose and treat hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloodlines Breeders who focus on breeding championship bloodlines will charge more for their puppies. A family might not need such a high-quality German Shepherd. All they need is a healthy and well-behaved puppy that will bring them years of happiness. However, there are many people who need a working dog or show dog. The most expensive dogs are those that are bred to be champions or protective and hard-working. Some breeders spend thousands of dollars just training a world class service dog. A family friendly guard dog with a protective temperament is not easy to breed consistently. Breeders have to factor in not just the genetics, but also the temperament and training. Origin The most expensive types of German Shepherds are those that are imported directly from Germany. Breeders must pay to stud and import these dogs which is not cheap. Since the German Shepherd breed originated in Germany, breeders in the US import dogs from Germany to breed puppies with a purebred lineage. Breeding in Europe is more regulated so the bloodlines are better protected. These puppies are known as European German Shepherds and are slightly different. They are smaller, have straighter backs and brighter coat colors. Some people think they look similar to a belgian malinois. Most European dogs are bred to be working dogs, while American dogs are more frequently bred for companionship. This is the same for American and German Rottweilers and American vs. European Dobermans. All of these breeder will be able to provide: Pedigree and kennel club registration. Documents that certify the puppy is free of any disease and has been checked by a veterinarian. A health warranty. Health records that guarantee the parents are genetically healthy and will not pass on elbow or hip dysplasia. These German Shepherd breeders all breed their puppies in accordance with the breed standard. None of them will sell puppies that are not registered with the American Kennel Club. Another good place to start looking for breeders is the American Kennel Club marketplace. Many of these puppies are bred to be family dogs and come with their papers. As you start looking into more well-known breeders or those that produce dogs of championship or working bloodlines, then the price of a German Shepherd starts to increase. Julia was a German Shepherd bred by the Harrison K-9 facility, highly trained in protection. She could also understand commands in three different languages. Her intelligence, as well as her ability to protect, were why she was priced so highly. Julia was bought by a billionaire businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The rarest coat color is panda, which is why it is also the most expensive. These German Shepherds are black and white. It is a piebald pattern where the black coat is splotched with large patches of white. Some puppies can have other colors like tan, instead of white. Panda dogs are purebred, but the rarity of this mutation makes them very hard to find. There are very few breeders that sell the panda color. And he actually cost nothing! By the end of his life, Rin Tin Tin had appeared in 27 Hollywood films. Rin Tin Tin most notably helped Warner Bros. But these dogs come in more than just this classic color! There are 11 colors that are recognized by the breed standard. Check out the table below for some German Shepherd prices based on coat color. The tan color covers the chest, belly and legs. White A white puppy has a furry coat that is entirely white, allowing it to blend in with the snow. Its eyes and nose are black as coal. Black A black German Shepherd has a coat that is entirely black. Any other color would classify them as a bi-color. Blue A blue German Shepherd is not literally blue, but has a gray color with a bluish hue. Sable The sable color is one of the most common colors, but is a bit more interesting than the black and tan. The hairs of these dogs have bands of tan and black, giving them a very unique coloring. Some of the factors that contribute to this cost are: Food. If a breeder tries to tell you that his puppies are healthy because their parents never had any issues — do not believe him! It is impossible to diagnose e. Where can you find cheap German Shepherd Dogs? The question is — do you want to purchase a dog with questionable health and temperament? These dogs often are not purebred German Shepherd puppies, but are mixed with e. Labradors, Pitbulls or Golden Retrievers. If you end up with a dog with genetically based health conditions however, be prepared to spend a multiple of the original purchase price on vet costs! Temperament and behavior While a lot of good manners can be taught through consistent training, temperament is genetic to a certain level. When you buy an extra cheap German Shepherd puppy, you not only get a dog with questionable health, but also with unpredictable temperament! Even aggression can be genetic and can be passed on from the mom and dad to the offspring. You can save yourself a lot of time, nerves and money spent on future behavioral training by getting a well-bred and more expensive dog. What is the most expensive type of German Shepherd? Like in many dog breeds, certain rare German Shepherd colors are much more expensive than the most common colors and patterns. It is much more important that your puppy has a sound temperament and fits in well with your family and lifestyle than that he has a certain rare look. These dogs are mutts German Shepherds mixed with Miniature Poodles, Shelties or other smaller breeds. Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight. Working lines vs show lines The German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog. Since his original use as a shepherd dog however, he has filled many different roles — from guarding properties over being used in the show ring to participating in Schutzhund and IPO trails. Depending on which lines your German Shepherd Dog comes from, the prices can vary a lot! Show line German Shepherds are the dogs that are bred for conformation shows. These are the type of dogs you should decide on if you would like a shepherd puppy as a pet and companion animal. If you are interested in using your German Shepherd as a protection dog and to participate in IPO trials, you should pick one from working lines. There are a lot of highly successful working line breeders both in North America and Europe. For this price, you get an absolutely flawless dog with extensive skills and perfect obedience. Some US dog owners interested in Schutzhund choose to import a puppy from old European working lines. While this might sound insanely high for a pet dog owner, for Schutzhund enthusiasts it is a typical price for a pedigreed German Shepherd pup. How much does it cost a month to own a German Shepherd? This will cover the basics: high-quality food and regular vet checks. Some German Shepherd owners spend considerably more money. Professional grooming is necessary for many German Shepherd owners, as these dogs shed heavily. This breeds tends to exhibit several behavioral issues that can be difficult to fix for first-time dog owners, including: Separation anxiety.

What class of dog are Cockapoo puppies for sale near Wilmington? Cockapoos are considered to be designer dogs, as they are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They can come in a wide range of sizes, depending on the generation of their parents, and can generally weigh between pounds. Cockapoos are typically known for being gentle, affectionate and playful companions, and they make great family pets due to their ability to adapt to different environments. Their coat can range from all one color to a variety of different colors, and they can be chocolate, black, apricot, white, or multi-colored. How can I manage allergies with Cockapoo puppies for sale in Wilmington? Managing allergies with Cockapoos may be a challenge as they are not hypoallergenic. Cockapoos can shed, so proper grooming and vacuuming regularly to remove loose hair and dander can help manage your allergies. Bathing your Cockapoo with a hypoallergenic shampoo can reduce the amount of dander and allergens in the air. To further prevent allergic reactions, keep your Cockapoo out of your bedroom, vacuum furniture and bedding often, and keep windows closed so that outdoor allergens do not enter your home. What should I feed Wilmington Cockapoo puppies for sale? Your Cockapoo should be fed a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that is tailored to their specific needs. Look for a commercial dog food that is formulated for small breeds, like a Cockapoo. Make sure the food you choose is made from high-quality ingredients and is fortified with vitamins and minerals. It's best to avoid foods that have a lot of fillers, like wheat or corn, as these can lead to health problems. Additionally, you can supplement their meals with occasional treats of lean meats, fruits, and vegetables. What are some essentials I should buy before getting Cockapoo puppies in Wilmington? Before you take home your Cockapoo, it's essential to have the basics on hand. First, you'll need food and water bowls that are intended for dogs. Be sure to get stainless steel bowls as opposed to ceramic or plastic; stainless steel bowls will better protect against bacteria buildup. Second, you'll want to purchase high-quality dog food for your Cockapoo, keeping in mind their breed-specific dietary needs. Third, you should invest in a collar and leash for walks. How big do Cockapoos for sale in Wilmington get? As a result, their size can vary depending on their breeding. On average, however, they tend to reach a height of 10 to 15 inches and a weight of 10 to 20 pounds. Depending on their genetics, some can be large, small, or somewhere in between. Ultimately, there is no way to know exactly how large or small a Cockapoo will get when fully-grown without taking into account the size of its parents. How many minutes per day should I walk Cockapoo puppies near Wilmington? It is recommended that Cockapoos get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to stay healthy and happy. Walking your Cockapoo for 30 minutes is an efficient way to meet this need breaking it up into two minute walks or three minute walks works as well. Each walk should include mental and physical stimulation, like walking different routes in different areas and playing fetch to encourage your pup to explore its surroundings and build up stamina. Are Cockapoos in Wilmington good for first-time owners? Cockapoos are known for their friendly and loving personalities, making them the perfect breed for first-time owners. This breed is highly trainable, and with consistent training, they can become excellent companions in no time. Cockapoos typically get along with other pets, strangers, and children, making them ideal for homes with children and other pets. They are also relatively low-maintenance dogs who do not require a lot of exercise or grooming, making them effortless to care for. Is training Wilmington Cockapoos for sale easy? Training a Cockapoo is not always easy, since each pup has its own personality and learning style. It's important to remember that they are highly intelligent, so training can be done with consistency and positive reinforcement. Keeping in mind that Cockapoos love to please their owners, it's important to understand and reward good behaviors with treats and praise. When it comes to teaching them basic commands, it's essential to be patient and use consistency, offering rewards when the pup follows instructions. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me. American Bull Staffy Staffy American Bulldog Characteristics With the Staffy American Bulldog, both parent breeds actually stem from the same ancestors, so they share a lot of similar traits. However, its physical characteristics resemble mostly that of the Staffy, such as its wide head and dark colours. If you are not a fan of dogs that shed, this breed is not for you. Their fur is also thick and coarse, so it can be scratchy on your skin. The best way to maintain their coat is to use a slick brush; this will minimise shedding and make their coat look healthier. Without either of these, they can become extremely destructive and antisocial. Males can also have a problem getting on with other male dogs, so bear that in mind when socialising your puppy. As long as you train your Staffy American Bulldog as soon as possible, they are easy to train and socialise well with people and other dogs. Good training and early socialising are vital for the Staffy X American Bulldog and so is vigorous exercise. These dogs have masses of energy and need to run around and burn it off for at least an hour every day. Keeping them mentally and physically exercised is one of the most important things when it comes to owning an American Bull Staffy. However, they would be better suited to a family home with a garden they can burn all of that energy in. A post shared by Bugsy goodboybehavior In terms of being suitable for those with children, the Staffy American Bulldog is known to be protective, loyal, and devoted to their owners, so they can make great family dogs. Amy Jacks Amy has been writing for as long as she can remember. This is a cross between the playful but driven American Staffordshire Terrier and the hardworking American Bulldog. For active dog parents, this breed is sure to only keep growing loyal fans. The American Staffordshire Terrier holds a scary image with some. However, many appreciate them for their true natures — playful, loyal, and intelligent. Those who have had the pleasure of encountering one of these dogs know their gentle disposition. However, their playfulness and love for their families shines through in their personalities. If you plan to adopt one of these breed mixes, be ready for lots and lots of cuddles. Still, there are millions of dogs waiting for homes in shelters. Additionally, many of the dogs in shelters are American Staffordshire Terrier mixes. When looking for a specific breed, make an effort to adopt from a shelter or rescue. However, given how uncommon the American Bull Staffy breed mix is and how similar they may appear to other breeds, shelters may not recognize them and simply list them as a mixed breed. Read on for a detailed list of characteristics of the American Bull Staffy. Contrary to popular belief, the suitability of dogs who adapt well to apartment living goes beyond its size. Apartment dwellers have a myriad of dog breeds to choose from as potential companions, with various factors to consider. Some large breeds can adapt well to apartment living and have lower activity levels. Others may require more space and possess higher energy levels. On the other hand, certain small dog breeds with abundant energy can still find contentment with indoor playtime or brisk walks. However, when selecting a dog that adapts well apartments, it is essential to prioritize your neighbors. This makes them less suitable for apartment living. Therefore, desirable qualities in an apartment dog encompass being quiet, low-energy, and displaying polite behavior towards other residents. Apartment dwellers have a wealth of dog breeds to choose from as potential furry companions. While some larger breeds can adapt well to apartment living, with lower, others may require more space and have higher energy levels, making them less suitable for smaller apartments. Conversely, certain small dog breeds with higher energy levels can still thrive in apartments, finding contentment through indoor playtime or brisk walks. By considering these factors, you can find a dog that will adapt well to apartment living and create a harmonious living environment for everyone involved. Lifespan Sociability The American Bulldog Staffordshire Terrier mix is a working and companion dog from two popular parent breeds. There is a decent amount of breeders of this type of dog, which means that you should find it easy to locate one with a good history, positive reviews, and that has conducted the appropriate health and other checks. In fact, they likely stem from English bulldogs, which means that the two-parent breeds share a lot of the same characteristics. They are both strong and powerful, have high-intensity energy, and they are both considered very good guard dogs as well as companion pets. Although the mix gets a lot of his characteristics, especially physical ones, from the Staffy, you are effectively dealing with a Bulldog strain. Socialization Is Essential The vast majority of problems that stem from the parent breeds and the mix arise as a result of poor or no socialization. Dogs require socialization to learn how to act and react around humans and animals. When they are given this socialization at a young age, it becomes instinctive for them to be confident and friendly, rather than wary and aggressive. It should also be noted that the male Bulldog, in particular, does not tolerate other male dogs well, especially in their own home, and some dogs will never welcome another male dog into their pack. They Are Heavy Shedders The short coat of the breed comes from both parent breeds, and while many potential owners expect the short hair to mean little or no shedding, nothing could be further from the truth. The American Bulldog Staffordshire Terrier mix is a prolific shedder, and the length and thickness of their fur means that the hair can be quite irritating and scratchy. Owners and former owners tend to think of them as being loyal and loving, but the breeds are strong and without socialization, they can display antisocial and destructive behavior. The breed is also very energetic and has an incredibly muscular physique. As such, when he is playing, it is possible that he will come into contact with tables, chairs, and even people or other pets. His stocky size means that your puppy will likely not notice collisions, but you will. Giving him plenty of daily exercise and letting him out in the yard to have a mad five minutes can help to alleviate this. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are very attentive and always aware of their surroundings. They are also extremely loyal and protective. They have a seemingly inherent knack for determining threats and they will protect children in their charge. On the other hand, they are also muscly, energetic, and can be bulldozer-like when playing. If a child gets in the way while your American Bulldog Staffy is playing, they can be easily knocked down or stood on. Later they became used for dogfighting. With that said, the breed does have a tendency to chase other animals. You will be able to introduce them, discourage rough play, and ensure that the dog even gets along with cats. Male bulldogs, however, do not always mix well with other male dogs. This can include at the park and especially in the home. If you adopt or buy an older male mix breed, and already have a male dog in your home, you will need to introduce them before considering owning them both. Dogs should always be supervised with smaller animals when they are out of the cage or pen. It has lots of energy and it has dietary requirements to match its boundless energy. Before taking one into your family, there are some factors you should consider. Protein helps maintain and grow muscle, which this breed has in abundance, so you will need to find good food that is high in protein. Nutrient-dense foods that are low in carbohydrates are beneficial because this enables you to feed an appropriate amount of protein without adding weight. Be aware that this breed is well known for being gaseous, so you will want to avoid tinned food and stick to dry food. Some dogs of this breed can fare well when fed on a combination of dry and wet food. You should be prepared to exercise your dog for a minimum of an hour and you will benefit from giving them at least two periods of intense exercise each day. This will keep them mentally and physically exercised, prevent them from chewing and destroying through boredom, and will make them easier to manage. Both parent breeds perform well in agility classes and, despite their stocky and muscular build, they can build up a head of steam and reach decent speeds. Again, agility classes are a good way of burning off excess energy. The breed has a very strong jaw that will lock onto any toy. If you intend to play tug of war or a similar game, be prepared to lose. However, you may come across some issues. The breed can be headstrong and stubborn. This means that you need to assert yourself as the pack leader and show your dominance, without being physically aggressive. If your dog views you as being dominant, he will want to please you and will be more likely to take to training. The mix is also very attentive and your dog may spend a lot of time surveying his surroundings, so if you are hoping to teach him new commands or tricks, this might be best performed in a quiet area with no external distractions. Be consistent, start training at a young age, and use healthy treats as well as lots of physical praise to help instill good behavior. Visit puppy classes and take your puppy on walks in local dog parks so that he can meet other dogs and people. This gives you the opportunity to discourage jumping up and other behavioral habits that can prove challenging as your dog ages. However, they are prone to considerable shedding. Use a soft bristle brush to maintain their coat and ensure that it stays healthy. This particular mix is no different and is generally considered to be a hardy and healthy dog breed. However, you should always look at the parent breeds to determine any potential conditions. Both parent breeds are prone to hip dysplasia and luxating patella. Minor Conditions.

His temperament and intelligence are above average. At the vet I heard the vet and techs in the back gushing over how behaved he was and they sent me home with extra goodies for him hehe. He's already house trained. I've already been able to teach him two commands "here" and "place". He's also the best snuggler and is sooo very patient and forgiving with my tornado of a two year old son. He is the best dog I've had in my entire life and love him to the moon. I can't wait until he's old enough to start going on adventures with us. Thank ya'll for a wonderful dog! We get soooo much attention with her! We've had people literally pull off the road just to comment on her! Lots of people asking if we are going to breed her! We are meeting with someone on Friday to evaluate her for protection training. She's my girl and she knows her job well! Btw, people always ask me where I got her.I tell them all about you guys! Here are pictures of Liberty sunbathing with her sister, Queen Bitsy! She loves her boy! We have answers. German Shepherd cost will vary based on a number of unique factors, and even puppies that look very similar can have a huge difference in price.
