It is important to provide firm and consistent training to ensure that your pup grows up to be well-mannered. With patience, love, and consistency, Poodles can be taught all kinds of commands and tricks. Although Poodles have an instinctive desire to please their owners, it is important to note that they are not the most obedient dogs out there. As such, it is important to set clear boundaries and expectations from the start. Poodles may take longer to learn commands, but they will eventually catch on with patience and consistency. Poodle dog Grooming Poodle dogs are known for their iconic fluffy fur, but grooming this breed requires some extra care. Bath time — The short coat of a Poodle can be a bit high-maintenance when it comes to bathing time. Be sure to use a gentle shampoo that is safe for dogs and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Remember to also wash between toes and scrub away any dirt that has accumulated under nails or pads. Let them have fun chewing on a bone instead! Nail trimming — Regular nail trimming is necessary in order to prevent injury from overgrown nails scratching themselves or others, or developing painful infections due to bacteria build-up underneath long nails. Poodle dog Training When it comes to training your Poodle dog, it can be both an exciting and daunting task. Although Poodles are known for being one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs, they can also have a stubborn streak. It can also be helpful to use clicker training with your Poodle. Clicker training is a type of positive reinforcement that uses a sound, like a clicker, to mark the desired behavior and then give the pup a treat. This method helps teach the pup that certain behaviors lead to rewards. Poodles are also highly food-motivated, so it can be beneficial to incorporate treats into your training sessions. Be sure to use small treats that are specifically designed for dogs and always keep portions to a minimum. Finally, make sure to provide plenty of love and affection during your training sessions as this will help foster a strong bond between you and your pup. As long as you remain patient and consistent, you will be able to successfully train your Poodle. The Need For Extensive Grooming If you are considering getting yourself a Poodle, you cannot take grooming for granted. Poodles demand extensive grooming as their coats need holistic maintenance. The human-like nature of their hair makes grooming an important routine, especially once your pet turns one year old. With a Poodle at home, be ready to brush its coat every day. The coat should be brushed neatly to the skin for the best results. Even if you follow the grooming routine of your pet, it is advisable to take help from a professional groomer once every few weeks. Before approaching a dog breeder for your Poodle, make sure you are ready to take up the responsibility of grooming it regularly. They get easily startled by even slightly loud noises made in or around your house. You can also scare a Poodle by suddenly hugging or cuddling it. Make sure you are conscious of such hypersensitivity in your pet as you bring it home. The best way to deal with this issue is to provide early and effective socialization training to your Poodle. Dedicating enough time in training a Poodle puppy helps it grow into a stronger and more adaptive dog. If you take your pet to a party or relocate to a new home, it will take some time in getting used to the environment. Early socialization training can help you control this anxiety and make your Poodle more adaptive. As they were bred as water dogs, Poodles have been habituated to working hard. They need to consume and use up their energy every day to stay fit and healthy. As a Poodle parent, make sure you take your pet out for at least two walks every day. Even when your Poodle is home, engage it in physical activities that burn its calories and keep it fit. Moreover, Poodles have high mental stimulation needs to stay healthy. If you keep them idle and unoccupied for too long, they will indulge themselves in their own unique activities, some of which might be destructive. It is important to feed your Poodle a diet containing the right amount of protein, fats, amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. It is equally important to ensure that your pet drinks enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. The amount of food you feed your Poodle changes as it gets older. Here is the frequency at which you should feed your pet at different stages of its life: Here is how frequently you should feed your Poodle at different life stages: Under 3 Months It is better not to have a structured dietary routine for your Poodle when it is younger than three months in age. You can free-feed the puppy at this age as it does not have the tendency of overeating yet. Leave fresh and high-quality food for your Poodle puppy at all times to feed it effectively. Between 3 To 6 Months As your Poodle puppy gets older, you need to structure its diet and develop a routine. At this age, you can feed your pet three to four meals a day. As the Poodle puppy is still growing into an adult, it is important to feed it enough to ensure holistic growth. At this stage, make sure you keep track of the food your puppy eats and prevent it from overeating. As a Poodle will never say no to food, overeating will lead to obesity and other health conditions. Over 6 Months Once your Poodle crosses the 6-month mark, you can reduce its food intake to two meals per day. You can always give your pet some snacks or treats in between. Along with feeding your Poodle, make sure it burns the calories it gains with regular exercise. Major Health Problems For Poodles Before you purchase a Poodle puppy, it is important to know the different health complications it can encounter throughout its lifetime. Ask the breeder about the potential health risks and make regular vet visits to give your Poodle a long and healthy life. Here are a few major health conditions a Poodle is prone to: Gastric Dilation — Volvulus Also known as bloating, this is a serious health condition that affects dee-chested breeds like Poodles. Feeding your pet a large meal, finishing a meal quickly, or drinking a lot of water after eating may result in such a condition. Poodles can also develop bloating if they exercise immediately after eating. Gastric dilation prevents your pet from belching or vomiting to get rid of excessive air in its stomach. This impairs blood circulation, increasing the risk of life-threatening conditions. Common symptoms associated with the disease include frequent vomiting, lethargy, and a loss of appetite. Poodle owners often overlook this issue by confusing it with other trivial conditions. It can be caused because of an imbalance in the adrenal or pituitary gland. Common symptoms of this condition include frequent urination and excessive drinking of water. Take your pet to a vet and give it immediate medical attention upon noticing these symptoms. Epilepsy Like humans, Poodles can suffer from epilepsy as well. It is a common cause of seizures and epileptic fits in dogs. The condition is heritable and can lead to mild or severe seizures in dogs. Common signs of seizures in dogs include them running around frantically or hiding as if they are being chased. Take your Poodle to a vet immediately as you witness a seizure. Hypothyroidism This is a health condition characterized by an underactive thyroid gland. Healthcare professionals have linked hypothyroidism to complications like epilepsy, hyperpigmentation, obesity, lethargy, pyoderma, and more. Back in the day when Poodles assisted hunters, their coats were trimmed to increase their efficiency in swimming while keeping their sensitive skin safe from cold water. The coats were strategically cut at the right places to make Poodles better swimmers. The fur on the remaining areas protected them from cold water. There Are Different Poodle Hairstyles Just like humans, Poodles have multiple hairstyles popular amongst dog lovers worldwide. Puppies taking part in competitions often sport a Puppy clip that gives them an even cut all over their bodies. This is what makes them hypoallergic. These dense and woolen hair do not shed and save Poodle owners from cleaning all corners of their houses every day. Moreover, just like human hair, Poodle hair is susceptible to hormonal changes. Poodles especially females also experience issues like hair thinning. Poodle hair keeps growing instead of shedding, making grooming an essential routine. Many Poodles serve as service dogs, guide dogs, and assistance dogs for disabled people. There is a lot of talk about black Boxers dogs; some potential puppy buyers will actively seek out this colored puppy, but their searching is in vain. It may be hard to believe it when you see photos, but black boxers do not exist — the color gene responsible for black coat color does not exist within the breed. Brindle is a pattern of color, it is a striping effect. With most brindle Boxers, the dark stripes are clearly over a fawn background. However, with Boxer dogs that appear to have a black coat, this is due to super heavy reserve brindling. In fact, it can be so dark and so thick, that you cannot see any fawn beneath it. This gives the dog a very dark coat that does indeed appear to be black. Here, we'll go into the facts a bit more to talk about why black cannot exist with the breed and some myths are swirl about regarding this perceived coat color. Why Colors are Misinterpreted It is very easy to see a dog and immediately assume that he is a certain color, based on what your eyes are telling you. However, with some breeds, the Boxer included, you must take a second look. It is sometimes only when you realize how brindle can cause an effect of sorts, that makes a first impression of black, that it starts to make sense. In addition, some Boxers are given the term of black; however, in many cases, this is a shortened term that comes from longer 'black brindle'. The base color of all purebred Boxers is fawn. Brindles are actually fawn with a brindle marking. Those markings are made of a pattern for fur consisting of black striping which covers the fawn… Sometimes just a bit lightly brindled and sometimes a lot a heavily brindled dog. A black Boxer with white flash? Your eyes are playing tricks on you. This pup is super dark reverse brindle with white markings. Cassandra, 5 months old Photo couresty of Christopher Many wonder if perhaps there were black Boxers that were mostly bred out of the lines and that perhaps now and again a dog with a black coat shows up somewhere. However, if we look to the record keeping of the past century, we can see that this is not the case. In this year time period, a black Boxer appeared once, however there is a catch to this. In the Germany, in the late 's a Boxer was paired with a mixed dog that was part Bulldog and part Schnauzer. The resulting litter had puppies that had black coats. Since another breed was introduced into the bloodline, they were not purebreds. These dogs were not used for any further breeding and therefore did not have any influence on genetics going forward. Once in a while there will be a breeder that claims to have black Boxers and will point to this one incident long ago as evidence that black does indeed run in the bloodline. However, since those mixed dogs with black coats were never used for any sort of develop program this simply does not hold true. Another element that shows that this coloring does not exist in the Boxer line is the rule that the Munich Boxer Club created in .This group had stringent control over breeding and development of Boxers in Germany and set the guidelines for the standard, conformation and all elements regarding appearance including coloring. This group did not wish for any experimenting to be done that would introduce the color black and for this reason they made a clear rule that black Boxers would not be accepted. Some make the argument that programs may have ignored this ruling and still attempted to breed black Boxers. However it would have not been in their best interest to do so and additionally, any resulting dogs would have not been part of the Munich Boxer Club since they couldn't have been registered there. This means that any such hypothetical dogs could not have genetically been included in the Boxer's bloodline since they would have been barred from any programs that were developing and perfecting the breed. So, now that we know: This color does not exist in the line The only record of any black Boxer in the last century was a mixed dog and not a purebred Guidelines and strict rules of of the club in Munich that was the foundation of today's Boxers clearly excluded black Boxers. And it is also fair to say: The chance of there being some odd, rare gene mutation that brings black into the coat is extraordinarily rare; mathematically the odds are so low that this can be ruled out Black Boxer puppies cannot be born due to a hidden gene; this is because black is dominant over all other colors. It cannot be recessive, it always comes out over others Why are some people still adamant that this coloring exists? Diesel, at 2 years old Photo courtesy of Brittany Calvert This leads us to the conclusion of only two possibilities in this regard: A 'true' black Boxer simply cannot be a purebred. It is assumed that in this case, it would be done to sell the pups at a higher cost. Some elements to ponder.Their registration papers do not have that color code as an option. Therefore, even if someone verbally dubs a Boxer to have a black coat, the dog - if registered with a recognized club - would officially be another color; and that would most likely be brindle. Since the pup would be handed over to new owners with papers stating he was not black, how can they simultaneously claim to have black Boxer dogs? And this of course, is very unethical. In Summary Every being whether it is a mammal, like a dog, human, etc. These genes determine everything about the being, from skin color to the number legs to where the eyes are.Genes control coat color in dogs, too. In order for a dog to be black, that breed of dog must contain the gene for having a black coat. Boxer dogs do not have that gene. So, there cannot be any black Boxer dogs. Evening Puppy Exercise Spend a good 10—20 minutes playing with your pup outside or inside a couple of times during the evening. Play a game of tug or get them interested in chasing a flirt pole. Not only will this tire them out, but it will also give them some important physical exercise. Evening Brain Games and Training Use the commercials during your evening television shows to practice some basic training cues with your puppy. Not only does this work their brains and take the edge off, but it builds your relationship with your puppy and promotes a solid training foundation. A puppy's attention span is pretty short, so keep training sessions short and sweet and spread them out throughout the day. Ditch the regular food bowl and use a puzzle feeder for your puppy's evening meal. Below are some of my favorite food puzzles and interactive feeders. They're fun for dogs and tricky enough to engage their brains, yet not so difficult that a dog will become frustrated and give up. I recommend starting with the West Paw Toppl featured below for your puppy's first interactive feeder , as the opening is wider than a Kong toy — making it easier to de-stuff and for you to stuff and then clean afterward! As your puppy is successful with easier stuffed toys, they can move up to more difficult puzzles! You can see my puppy Fozzie Bear going to town on his Toppl toy during crate acclimation in this video: West Paw Toppl Interactive Feeder Available at: Available at: Difflife Snuffle Mat This snuffle mat provides a variety of hiding spots for dry food or treats, encouraging your dog to use their nose to find their meal and helping to slow down eating. The repetitive nature of these things is self-soothing to your puppy much how activities like knitting are for us. The snuffle mat I recommended above is a great way to work their nose indoors, or you can scatter their food in the grass of your yard for them to sniff out. Freeze your puppy's meal in their Toppl to make it last longer or use a licking mat smeared with a tiny bit of peanut butter or wet food for a good lick session. Hyper Pet IQ Treat Lick Mat Spread a bit of your dog's wet food, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, or low-fat greek yogurt on this mat to provide a soothing enrichment activity. Take your puppy out for a bathroom break as late as possible — ideally, the last person to bed should also take your pup to their potty spot. This helps empty them out, decreasing the chance of them needing to go in the middle of the night. Keep this last potty break calm and boring. You don't want your sleepy puppy finding their second wind! On this note, consider your puppy's evening mealtime. You don't want to feed your puppy too late in the evening that they need to go 2 in the middle of the night. However, if you feed them too early, they may be hungry at bedtime and that can make them restless. One way to prevent late-night hunger is to use food puzzles with small "snack-sized" portions of food as their pre-bedtime enrichment. When it comes to leaving water in your puppy's crate, I always recommend free access to water at all times. Water is a "primary resource" — meaning your puppy needs it to survive. And there are some medical conditions that require access to drinking water at all times. But, if your puppy is waking up continually during the night because they need to urinate, speak with your veterinarian to first rule out medical reasons such as a urinary tract infection and then discuss with them whether restricting access to water before and during the night is a good choice for your puppy. Keeping a puppy potty log can really help you determine your puppy's natural potty schedule, which can help you adjust feeding times to increase longer sleep time at night. Download our free potty log template. PRO TIP: It can be helpful to set an alarm for yourself during the night to wake up and take your puppy for a quick potty break. It's all about being proactive — with an alarm, your puppy won't wake up feeling like they're ready to burst and start whining or crying in their crate. As they mature, your alarm can be set later and later as they can physically hold it longer. For more tips on potty training, check out "How to Potty Train a Puppy. The transition from sleeping in close proximity skin-to-skin.The reviews and photos people have submitted for this product are absolutely heartwarming, you really should check them out. I like to believe that he found having a familiar scent paired with the heartbeat sound and heat pack very comforting as he learned to sleep in his crate. He certainly loved to cuddle with it, and even after he transitioned to sleeping outside of the crate once he was old enough, he still carried the Snuggle Puppy around to use as a pillow, as you can see in the inset photo. The Snuggle Puppy can last for years. Even when your dog doesn't need it at night, just take out the batteries and heating pack and your dog will still carry it around! Another important feature of the Snuggle Puppy is that it's washable just don't forget to remove the batteries first! Another Preventive Vet staff review: "Mary Berry was having a difficult time sleeping alone in her crate — our guess was that she was missing her mom and littermates. She slept so soundly with the Snuggle Puppy, we would bring it with us when visiting friends so she had a comfortable piece of home to rest with. I highly recommend the Snuggle Puppy to help your new puppy sleep through the night! If your dog's idea of "snuggling" this toy involves mouthing, chewing, or disemboweling, be sure to take the toy away from them. Batteries are very dangerous for dogs if they are swallowed. Soothing Scents for Your Puppy Using dog-appeasing pheromones also called DAP can help your puppy feel secure and calm, as these mimic the pheromones their mother emits during nursing. Pheromones work for many puppies, but not all. But there's no downside to trying it out with your pup, so it's something I regularly recommend. The Adaptil pheromone diffuser covers a large space and lasts for 30 days before needing a refill. You might even try a spritz from an Adaptil spray on bedding shortly before placing your puppy in their crate. Just one or two spritzes are all you need! Adaptil Pheromone Diffuser. Feed your GSD puppy a nice healthy dinner along with some fresh water to drink. Make him comfortable with a nice warm blanket and a chew toy. I know it seems like a lot and you may not have time every day to follow this type of sleep schedule. This is best case scenario. Adjust accordingly based on your lifestyle. Encourage him to rest if he seems tired. If you notice him waking up from a nap, take him outside immediately to go potty. Make sure he has a quiet place to sleep undisturbed and away from the action, especially if you have children. Teach him to sleep in his crate when you can. You can also put a little dog bed in another room for peace and refuge. Routine is key for creating sleep patterns. Your puppy will learn to go to bed when you do. Crate your puppy preferably using an adjustable partition leaving him just enough room to stand up and turn around. This will help him sleep and lessen the chance of him going potty at night. Keep him crated in your room if need be. Being close to you may help him sleep at night. Make his crate nice and cozy with a warm blanket or two on the bottom. Forget the bed as he will probably destroy it. Instead give him a couple of his favorite chew toys. Prepare for your puppy to wake up sometimes throughout the night. There is a reason puppies sleep most of the day away. The body and brain use this downtime to develop and grow. This includes their central nervous system and immune system which they need to fight off sickness and disease. Similar to humans, a lack of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system which means they are more prone to sickness or disease. German Shepherds grow at a rapid pace for the first year of their life. This means that sleep is even more crucial during this time period. Fun Fact: Dogs dream just like humans. In Closing: Sleep is vital for your German Shepherd puppy so make sure they are getting enough. There may be some sleepless nights ahead of you, especially if the crate is in your bedroom. But things will get easier the more they mature. Remember as they grow and get older, the amount of sleep they require will decline. Once they are a full-grown adult, they will sleep for about 12 to 14 hours. Stick to a consistent schedule and make sure they have a quiet place to retreat. Please leave a comment below and let us know what you think! Do you own a German Shepherd puppy? If so, what is their sleep schedule? Do you have any tips for potential owners that may help? Let us know! We would love to hear about your personal story! Share this:. Puppies are similar to babies, they eat, poop, play and sleep. This article will answer those questions and give you some insight into German Shepherd puppy sleeping habits. Yes, German Shepherd puppies sleep a lot. A GSD pup will normally sleep upwards of 18 to 20 hours a day. They are usually asleep unless you are engaging with them in some way. It is normal for German Shepherd puppies to sleep up to 20 hours a day. GSD puppies sleep so much because their bodies are still developing and growing fast so they need to sleep to fuel that process. As they get older, they will sleep a little less. German Shepherd puppies should sleep in a crate when really young and not yet trained. This is because if your puppy has too much space to roam, it will be harder to get them potty trained as they will just find a spot to do their business away from where they are sleeping. Some of the best crates for German Shepherd puppies are ones that can grow with your pup and come with a divider. This is not to say your pup has be crated forever, think of this as a tool to help them get house-trained faster and to keep them safe. As mentioned above, it is too easy for them to find a spot to do their business if they have free access to the whole room at night. However, once your puppy knows how to wake you up for their bathroom break, it is really a personal decision as to whether you want your pup to sleep in your bed. German Shepherd Puppy Sleeping Habits As mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies will usually sleep between 18 and 20 hours a day, which is totally normal. It is also normal for a puppy to not be able to sleep through the night. Just like newborn babies need to get on a schedule so does your new puppy. When my GSD puppy first came home, she usually woke me up two or three times each night for potty breaks. Final Thoughts German Shepherd puppies sleep a lot because their bodies are developing and going through a lot of growth when they are really young. It is normal for a puppy to only be awake for 6 hours a day when you first bring them home. Unless they are playing with toys , eating, drinking, or going outside, they will probably be sleeping. If you feel like your GSD puppy is sleeping too much you can check with your vet to make sure all is ok just for peace of mind.

The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. Low maintenance coat with wave and considered minimal to no shed. F1b is a Bernedoodle bred with a Poodle. F1b Mini Bernedoodles will have a higher success rate for no shed, and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. We microchip puppies prior to going home. Microchipping is a very easy, affordable process that a veterinarian can easily do. Males tend to be larger than females, but beyond that, there is not a major difference between the genders. The differences are quite subtle, and both males and females make amazing pets. We think temperament is more important than gender when matching dogs to owners. If your Bernedoodle is very active outdoors, you will likely find a shorter clip easier to maintain. But many owners enjoy the look of them in a fuller coat. A curly coat is less likely to shed but more likely to become matted if not brushed regularly. Daily brushing will be required, as well as professional grooming every weeks. So be specific and show the groomer photos of how you want your dog to look. Also Avoid bathing your Bernedoodle too often, as it strips essential oils from the coat. There is no such thing as a fully-hypoallergenic dog; Bernedoodles tend to be allergy-friendly. Most people with allergies to dog dander i. Every Bernedoodle has a different coat. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy type coat that is low- to non-shedding. If you are allergic to dog saliva you will most likely be allergic to Bernedoodles. You will know if you are allergic to saliva if your skin will break out in hives when a dog licks you. We always suggest that if allergies are involved, customers should meet some Bernedoodles if they can. This has happened very rarely. Yes, you can find a copy of our contract here. My name is Emily Henry and my husband, Jerrod and myself started our family 17 years ago. We are raising our family on our dairy farm where we milk a little over cows, three times a day as well as crop farm 3, acres near Honda Marysville plant. While the dairy and hay making keeps my husband busy, the kids and I love spending time with our dogs and the puppies. They are all treated like family around here. If the kids are playing outside, you are bound to find our pups playing in the yard. If we are busy feeding calves, you are sure to find the dogs patiently waiting to lick up any extra calf milk that is not needed. If I go for a run, you will likely find one of them at the end of the leash. They have even been our "guard dogs" on 2 different instances of individuals coming to our door. They are known for their calm and gentle demeanor but they will alert and protect you when called to duty. After losing our beloved "farm dog" golden back in , we decided it was time to get a new dog in .At this time, we searched high and low, from 5 local humane societies to golden retriever rescues. To no avail, we were either not "qualified" to have a golden that was not fenced in nor were there any goldens at the local shelters. That is when my children decided to purchase Bella from a breeder. After much time, patience and research, we decided to take on breeding. This opportunity turned into something greater than we could have imagined. These girls have brought so much joy to our home. Although it is a lot of hard work, we cherish every moment and are blessed with the opportunity to provide families with their new best friend s. We look forward to meeting your family!! english golden retriever puppies for sale in ohio - The process of searching for a Goldendoodle puppy can be an exciting yet stressful time. Like with any other important decision, there are lots of factors you should take into consideration…it can definitely feel overwhelming at times! Many Goldendoodle owners have a preferred gender and will debate relentlessly that it is the superior choice. So, how do sort through the biased opinions and make the best decision for you? Male vs Female Goldendoodle Health Differences While we all hope our dogs remain happy and healthy, there are plenty of Goldendoodle health issues that can be problematic throughout their lives. Both a male vs female Goldendoodle have the same estimated lifespans and are just as likely, on average, to have accidents or illnesses. This is why, regardless of gender, I highly encourage all Goldendoodle owners to invest in quality pet insurance as early as possible. Click here to get an instant, online pet insurance quote from Healthy Paws! Male vs Female Goldendoodle Size Differences While exceptions exist to every rule, in general, male Goldendoodles are going to grow up to be slightly bigger than female Goldendoodles when it comes to both weight and height. Many times, especially in smaller Toy or Mini Goldendoodle sizes , this height and weight difference is negligible and almost imperceivable. Keep in mind, that while male Goldendoodles will likely end up larger than their female littermates, females tend to mature faster so they may achieve their full-grown size earlier. There is no advantage to a particular gender when it comes to Goldendoodles shedding , being allergy-friendly, or having any other coat features. Goldendoodle Humping Humping, while sometimes comical, is an undesired behavior that is often associated with a male Goldendoodle vs female Goldendoodle. This is something that you can easily work on when training your Goldendoodle. Goldendoodle Territory Marking Many prospective owners tend to prefer a female Goldendoodle due to the stigma of male Goldendoodles marking their territory. The one obvious behavioral difference between a male vs female Goldendoodle is how they pee. Female Goldendoodles tend to squat while male Goldendoodles will lift their leg. Keep in mind, however, that male Goldendoodles sometimes prefer to squat as well depending on how early they are neutered. Male vs Female Goldendoodle Personality Differences When it comes to personality differences between the male vs female Goldendoodle, there are more myths out there than facts. More common misconceptions are that female Goldendoodles are friendlier and that male Goldendoodles are more independent. There are many factors that you should take into consideration when adding a new puppy to your family. What breed of doodle you select is important, as different breeds have different characteristics and requirements that may fit better or worse with your lifestyle. The next most important thing to consider is the reputation of the Goldendoodle breeder or the Goldendoodle rescue organization you choose. In the long run, you and your new Goldendoodle puppy will be so much better off if you focus on individual personality and the other important factors we discussed rather than limiting your options by choosing specifically a male or female Goldendoodle. More About Goldendoodles…. Male vs Female Goldendoodles Which is Best? So to say that one is better than the other is false. However, there may be one gender of Goldendoodle that is better SUITED for you, and your current circumstances, and so understanding the difference between male and female Goldendoodles is essential. So, even while the differences are subtle, to help you gain a better understanding we have conducted the following research, and laid it out below. Actual Differences Between Goldendoodle Genders Male Goldendoodles are going to differ from female Goldendoodles primarily in regards to; Should you pick a boy or girl Goldendoodle puppy? Male and Female Goldendoodle Size and Weight Differences One of the biggest and really only differences when it comes to male versus female Goldendoodles is the overall size both in terms of height, and weight. Which means that even though not every female will be smaller than every male, the majority of them will be. Keep in mind as well that even though male Goldendoodles will likely end up larger than the female Goldendoodles, females tend to mature faster than males do. And so even though they may not be as big in the long run, they may be able to achieve their full-grown size at an earlier age. Male Goldendoodles are likely to have larger bones, bigger muscles, broader shoulders, and more oversized paws. These oversized features can play a substantial role in determining the height and weight of the dog, and the difference in weight can climb up to 40 pounds! So keep these things in mind as you make your decision, size and weight will likely only be an issue if you have space limitations. The primary differences can be seen in how they respond to a litter of puppies, as well as other dogs of the same or opposite gender. When Goldendoodles are going through their youthful teenage phase , males tend to mark a lot as they develop sexually. However, females on the other hand are more likely to become more protective of their litter of puppies than males. As previously mentioned, this generally crosses all breeds. On average, male dogs are more likely to exhibit territorial behavior to older dogs due to the marking of territory , whereas female dogs are more likely to be protective of their young. Other than that, there is really no difference between the male and female Goldendoodle dog breed when we examine health, intelligence, training, and grooming. The happy smile of a boy Goldendoodle What is the difference in temperament and personality between male and female Goldendoodles? Even though many a pet owner naturally assume that there is a big difference in temperament between a male, and female Goldendoodle. Due to the fact that they are the same breed, they both carry the same intelligence of a Poodle, and the same amount of loving affection of a Golden Retriever. The one factor that will make the biggest difference in this department is their relationship with you, and those within their environment. If you return the favour, and shower them with love, attention, and do your best to keep them mentally stimulated. This should result in a tremendously social, friendly, and intelligent pup, no matter the gender. The amount to which dogs show their outgoing personalities, depend heavily on their day-to-day interactions with you. Are male or female Goldendoodles better with families? Dogs are a lot like humans in that their behavior can be heavily attributed to the environment around them. If you create a more negative, stressful, or neglectful environment for your dog, you are more likely to end up with a dog that exhibits these same negative traits. However, if you show them tremendous love, attention, and care, they will do the same to their dog owner. So, when it comes to families, Goldendoodles either boy dog or girl dog are not likely to lash out, and actually enjoy spending quality time with family members kids or adults. The only difference you may find is that male breeds are known to mark or hump things around their teenage years, whereas female breeds are more prone to becoming cuddly, and affectionate. But in reality, a female in heat can become just as if not more aggressive than a protective unneutered males guarding his territory. In fact, some females are MORE territorial because they are so loyal to their families. Though in general neither is considered to be aggressive in nature. Does it matter what gender a Goldendoodle is? Even though there are not too many differences between male dog and female dog Goldendoodles, it can matter for some depending on personal preference and environment. Nearly all females are smaller in terms of both size and weight when compared to males. This size difference is usually not too big, and will most likely go unnoticed unless you are getting a Standard Goldendoodle. In this case, there can be up to a pound difference between a healthy male, and female Goldendoodle. This can play a massive role if you live in an apartment, condo, or somewhere with less room for the dog to roam free. So if you prefer to have a smaller hybrid dog for whatever reason be it spatial or preference , going with a female might be the better option. If you are looking to buy from a reputable Goldendoodle breeder or adopt form a Goldendoodle rescue — you can feel safe choosing either gender. Contrary to popular belief, the temperament, personality, playfulness, friendliness, and emotions of a Goldendoodle do not vary by gender. Dogs are amazingly in depth animals, and they much like us rely mostly on the day-to-day interactions they have with us, and other dogs. If their environment is safe, secure, calm, inviting, positive, and filled with love and affection. Then you are just about guaranteed to get a calm, caring, positive, and loving dog right back no matter the gender. And consider a cool Star Wars or Coffee dog names … or a traditional dog name ending in Y sound. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Physical Differences: The Male Doodle vs. In that case, there are some physical differences you should consider. Male dogs, specifically male Goldendoodles, tend to be taller and heavier than female dogs. This is due to genetic factors and reproductive hormones. However, the disparity in size might not be as noticeable in a Goldendoodle as in some other breeds due to their mixed genetics. Size and Weight Male Goldendoodles are often larger than their female littermates in terms of height and weight. Female Goldendoodles from the same litter, in comparison, are usually a bit smaller, with an average height of 14 to 16 inches at the shoulder and an average weight range between 26 to 30 pounds. Note that male and female Goldendoodles can fall between the designated height of inches and pounds. For ease of comparison, we are describing averages within a single litter. Coat and Appearance Both male and female Goldendoodles can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat. Their coat is known for being low to non-shedding, which makes Goldendoodles a popular choice among people with allergies. However, coat texture, color, and length can vary between individual dogs and are not influenced by gender. Musculature and Build Male Goldendoodles typically have a more robust build, with a broader chest and larger muscles. This is most noticeable in the standard Goldendoodle versus the mini Goldendoodle. However, it is always possible to have a male exhibit a less robust structure if it inherits more of the Poodle physique, just as a female could have a sturdier build if taking after the Golden Retriever genes in her lineage. Both intact males and females can have unique gender traits, but after being desexed spayed or neutered , most dogs tend to have a more nonbinary presence. But remember, the teenage phase is a challenging period for all dogs. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are key to managing this stage. Trainability: Is There a Difference? Trainability depends more on individual temperament, breed, and upbringing than gender. Goldendoodles, irrespective of their gender, are renowned for their love of learning and performing, traits inherited from their Poodle and Golden Retriever lineage. These qualities make them relatively easy to train. Understanding Male Behavior and Training Male Goldendoodles, especially if they are unneutered, can sometimes display territorial behaviors like marking. They can also be more easily distracted during training, mainly when other dogs or interesting smells are around. However, males are often very eager to please their owners, which can be a positive trait when it comes to training. Understanding Female Behavior and Training Female Goldendoodles are often described as more independent and more consistent in their behavior. Some trainers find females easier to work with because they tend to be less easily distracted and more focused. However, this is not a hard-and-fast rule. Training Techniques: What Works Best? Regardless of the gender of your Goldendoodle, positive reinforcement is the best approach to training. This method involves rewarding your dog for desired behavior, which encourages them to repeat it. The reward can be a tasty treat, verbal praise, or a fun game. Remember, consistency and patience are key. Both male and female Goldendoodles will benefit from clear, consistent commands and training routines. Health Considerations: Males or Females? You might also wonder about health conditions. Both male and female Goldendoodles can be prone to certain breed-specific health problems due to their Golden Retriever and Poodle heritage. It is important to understand the presence of reproductive organs in unneutered and unspayed dogs may also lead to gender-specific health issues. Health in Male Goldendoodles If not neutered, male dogs can be prone to specific health issues associated with the male reproductive system. These might include testicular cancer and specific prostate problems. Health in Female Goldendoodles Unspayed female dogs may be at risk for conditions such as pyometra, a severe, potentially life-threatening uterus infection, and mammary tumors. If not spayed, female dogs also go into heat typically twice a year, which can result in messiness and attract male dogs. An unspayed female who is in heat must be kept inside or under the direct control of a human while outside, as she can be detected by an intact male up to two miles away. An unplanned litter of puppies can easily be the result of irresponsible breeding. Discussing the timing and pros and cons of these procedures with a trusted veterinarian is best. Understanding any contractual agreements with your breeder covering the age of desexing is an important consideration when choosing a breeder. Breed-Specific Health Testing Good breeders should test their breeding dogs for breed-specific genetic diseases as well as physical deficiencies, which in Goldendoodles includes hip, elbow, and patella testing and ophthalmologist and cardiology evaluations. Ensuring your puppy comes from health-tested parents can significantly decrease the risk of inheriting certain genetic diseases. Characteristics and Temperaments: Male Dogs vs. Female Dogs Another aspect to consider while choosing between a male and a female Goldendoodle is their temperament. While it is important to remember that each dog, irrespective of their gender, will have a unique personality, there are some general characteristics often associated with male and female dogs. This behavior could become a problem if not managed correctly, mainly if there are other intact male dogs in the house. Female dogs at sexual maturity may exhibit more independence, which can sometimes be mistaken as aloofness. They might be less interested in play and more focused on their environment. Intact females can have hormonal fluctuations, which sometimes cause incompatibility between two females. Male Dogs: Characteristics and Temperament Male dogs are typically more outgoing and playful and tend to love family members equally. They are often described as more affectionate and more eager for human attention. They are often willing to leave their task for a bit of extra fuss from their human companions. They also can be more territorial and may display dominant behavior, especially around other male dogs, but this can easily be mitigated by neutering. In terms of training, intact male dogs can sometimes be more easily distracted, especially in the presence of other dogs, with intriguing smells, or in a new environment. Despite this, their playful and attention-seeking nature can make them fun to train. However, the testosterone responsible for distracting a male dog is not an issue until sexual maturity, which occurs sometime between 8 and 12 months of age. Up until that point, there should be no noticeable difference in how males and females deal with distractions. Female Dogs: Characteristics and Temperament Female dogs are often described as more independent and a bit more reserved or aloof than males. They can be equally affectionate, but they usually prefer to seek out attention on their terms. It is common for females to bond with a specific family member heavily. Female dogs are generally less likely to engage in dominance or territorial behaviors than males unless they have a litter of puppies to protect. However, females that are in heat can suffer from hormonal fluctuations that can cause unpredictable behavior towards other dogs. The gender differences described above are common in dogs that are not spayed or neutered. When a male or a female dog is desexed, their reproductive capabilities are removed, including the hormones that cause differences in specific gender traits. It becomes difficult at that point to determine any differences in temperaments, intelligence, or activity levels. Size and Space Male dogs, being generally larger, might require more space to move around comfortably, particularly in the case of larger breeds. However, since Goldendoodles come in many sizes, it is easy to choose a Goldendoodle that will mature to an appropriate size to fit your home. Activity Levels While activity levels can vary more by breed and size than by gender, it is important to realize all dogs need exercise. A larger dog could be a great companion for hiking, running, or other activities if you lead a very active lifestyle. Training and Behavioral Issues Male dogs will be more likely to engage in behaviors like marking if not neutered before sexual maturity. This involves lifting a hind leg to urinate in multiple locations to claim territory. This activity can be completely avoided by neutering. A challenge in training females that are not yet spayed can include being housebound for approximately 21 days at a time while they are in heat. It is important to keep them secluded and out of access to all unneutered male dogs during this time. It is not uncommon to have intact male suitors who have jumped their fence frequenting your property in hopes the cycling female will come out to play. Health and Care Male dogs may be more prone to certain health conditions and females to others. Regular vet check-ups are crucial for either gender to monitor for any potential health issues. Social Dynamics Consider the social dynamics if you already have other pets. Male and female dogs can get along with other dogs, but introductions should be done carefully to ensure harmony. Two unneutered males, for instance, might be more likely to clash than two unspayed females. Choosing between a male or female dog is a personal decision that depends on numerous factors. The most important factor to consider is the gender of any existing dogs already in the home. A desexed male and female pairing is typically the best for compatibility. It is a devastating situation to learn you acquired a companion for your existing dog that creates chaos in the home. Instead of choosing a gender for yourself, concentrate on choosing the best partner for your dog. You should have multiple playdates with other dogs coming to your home to see if your dog has a gender preference. Playdates should always begin with both dogs being on short leashes for introductions. Off-leash play should only be allowed when both dogs have displayed friendly demeanor, including wagging tails. Playtime should be closely monitored, and mental notes should be taken on the level of enjoyment experienced by your dog. If you see your dog enjoys the interaction with a specific gender, then that is the gender you should choose when adding a second dog. Remember that you need to allow your dog to experience playdates with multiple dogs one at a time. The level of enjoyment with a particular dog may not be due to its gender but, instead, its personality or size. Conclusion If it will be the first dog in your home, then the gender becomes much less important. As mentioned above, responsible pet ownership involves spaying or neutering your family pet. This creates a gender-neutral dog making gender selection unimportant. Regardless of gender, Goldendoodles are known for their intelligence, friendliness, and low-shedding coats, making them an excellent choice for many families. You might find a super playful female or a very calm and independent male dog. The most important thing is to choose a dog that fits well with your lifestyle and to provide them with the love, care, and training they need to be a happy, well-behaved companion. As you are narrowing down the search for the perfect puppy, you might ask yourself: Should you get a male or female puppy? Today we will explore the upsides and downsides of each gender, as well as discuss when you should decide for which one. How will a boy or girl get along with existing dogs in the household? Are females easier to housetrain? Table of Contents Is it better to get a male or female Goldendoodle? Both male and female Goldendoodles can be a wonderful addition to an active family. However, some situations work out better for male dogs and others are more suited for female ones. When considering whether to get a male or female Goldendoodle, consider the following points. Size Male dogs of any breed will become taller and heavier than female dogs. Goldendoodles are rather tall dogs. They reach about inches at the shoulder and weigh lbs. To know the expected size of your Goldendoodle puppy, check out our growth calculator! If you want to make sure that your dog is at the lower end of the size spectrum, decide for a female. If you want a dog that is tall and heavy, a male fits the bill. If you are looking for an especially small Goldendoodle, you should also consider a Mini Goldendoodle or F1b Mini Goldendoodle — these are already at least lbs. Dogs typically get along the best in pairs: a male and a female will be better friends than two males or two females. Two females, especially two intact females, are the most difficult pairing. They can start to be very reactive with one another and lash out aggressively. If you already have a female dog in your household, it is very advisable to pick a male counterpart for her. If you already have a male and a female dog, you should still go for a male Goldendoodle puppy. Two males will likely be easier to manage than two females. Breeding plans If you are planning on having your own Poodle mix puppies one day, you would want to get a female dog so that you can raise your very own litter! Of course, only commit to breeding if you have done all required health testing such as hip x-rays through OFA and have found a healthy and suitable breeding partner for your dog. Are female dogs easier to potty-train? There is no difference in how easy or difficult it is to potty-train Goldendoodles of either gender. When you are potty-training your puppy, he or she will be so young weeks old that they have not reached sexual maturity. The typical hormones that distinguish boy and girl dogs have yet to be developed. How easy or difficult it is to potty-train will be much more determined by how consistent you are, how good your setup is and how well the breeder prepared the puppy for being potty-trained. Many great breeders already start the potty-training at their house by having a litterbox available for the puppies or taking them out regularly. This will make a much bigger impact on their house training success than whether they are male or female. Are female Goldendoodles calmer than males? Females in general tend to be more on edge, more nervous and more reactive than males. Males, especially once they are neutered, are a lot more laid-back and calm. They tend to be more handler-focused and like food more. If you are planning to participate in a dog sport such as agility with your dog, getting a female can be an advantage in that they can be higher-drive, have more motivation and more endurance than males. Female Goldendoodles play intensely with toys and will often try harder and longer to succeed at an exercise than a male. While males like to snuggle and goof off, females are all business! Do male dogs prefer female owners? It cannot be said that male dogs prefer female owners. It is equally untrue that female dogs like male owners better. What is explained above about pairs getting along the best only applies to dogs — not dogs and their human counterparts. Dogs and owners of both genders can get along very well , especially if they are trained with positive methods and the owner spends quality time bonding with them. Are boy or girl Goldendoodles more popular? Neither boy or girl Goldendoodles are the most popular gender. With the growing popularity of Doodles, more and more breeders are producing these dogs, letting puppy buyers choose from a wide range of possible puppies. If you have your eyes set on a specific gender, you will surely be able to find a matching puppy. The Bottom Line When deciding for a male or female Goldendoodle, consider your plans and goals for your dog as well as your current setup. Do you already have a female dog? A male Goldendoodle might be the best fit. Do you want a small and agile dog? A female fits the bill. Do you want a dog that is cuddly and attached? A male is the way to go. Do you want to do dog sports such as agility? Females might have higher drive and motivation. Whichever gender you decide for, we wish you a lot of fun with your new Goldendoodle puppy! As a dedicated Labrador parent, one of your primary responsibilities is ensuring your pup remains healthy and achieves all growth milestones based on his age. However, some of the most overwhelming factors to crack through are size and weight. So, is your Lab puppy too small for his age? Your Lab puppy might be too small if it weighs less than 12 lbs 5. Lab puppies generally weigh about 2 lbs 1 kg with every week of growth. If your puppy weighs a lot less than that, he may be too small for his age. If you're worried that your pup might be too small for his age, you're in the right place. In this article, I'll outline Lab puppies' size and weight facts to help you understand where your young canine friend stands. Keep reading! In this article How Much a Lab Puppy Should Weigh This is one of the most common concerns and one of the most challenging to address directly. This is because a puppy's weight and size may differ based on his gender, genetic composition, or underlying conditions. However, there's a trick that may help you determine your pup's weight range. In most cases, average puppies add about 2 lbs 1 kg with every week of growth. And just like the weight, Lab puppies have different sizes. You may notice a huge size variance in a litter of Lab puppies. Some may appear too big or too small for their age. Below are 3 factors that can affect a Lab puppy's size and weight. Genetic May Affect Size A canine's size is partially genetic. Therefore, a Lab puppy born of small parents may inherit the genes and appear smaller for his age. However, this isn't always the case because some small-parents puppies sometimes grow into huge dogs. So, it's possible to note a considerable size variance on puppies from the same litter. Diet Greatly Influences Weight A puppy's diet also has a lot to do with his size and weight. Poorly fed puppies may fail to grow properly. Thus they may be low in weight and small in size. When feeding puppies, it isn't always about the amount of food the pup consumes but rather the nutritional value. So, to be on the safe side, it's advisable to consult your vet on the right foods for your pup based on his age. Health Problems Can Inhibit Growth Puppies that have been ill or have underlying conditions may portray slow growth. Their size and weight may be small compared to healthy pups within the same age limit. However, you shouldn't worry about this because such puppies often catch up later after recovery. Note that this chart only gives a weight limit, and it doesn't mean your puppy should weigh precisely that. It's only meant to help you protect your pup's weight and easily point out when he's seriously under or overweight. When do labs Stop Growing? Labs need to fill out more than smaller breeds as they are medium to large-sized dogs. Usually, an average Lab will be at full height and weight by their first birthday. Is Your Labrador Retriever Healthy? Labrador Retrievers are the perfect family pet. Not only are Labs wonderful companions, but their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and love for life make them ideal members of any household. The best way to guarantee that happiness? Preventative care! This condition can cause pain and make it difficult for your pup to move freely. Due to CHD, they may also develop arthritis in the hip area as they age. Some dogs with CHD have normal hips as puppies, but they can develop joint instability later in life. Unfortunately, CHD affects medium to large dog breeds, with the Lab amongst those dogs with a higher chance of developing this condition. Recognizing the early signs of this progressive disease will help you get treatment for your dog so he has an active life filled with joy instead of pain or discomfort. An old Labrador Retriever is especially prone to developing this disease. Osteoarthritis, or Degenerative Joint Disease DJD , is a progressive inflammation of the joints caused by deterioration and breakdown in cartilage. This action leads to an increase in friction, which causes significant pain for dogs. In cases of osteoarthritis, this cartilage cushion begins to break down because of factors such as age or injury. If a dog has canine atopic dermatitis, the immune system reacts too strongly to common environmental allergens absorbed through the skin, such as mold spores and grass. A dog with atopic dermatitis will typically show signs and symptoms between 3 months to 6 years of age. Labrador Retrievers are amongst the most common dog breeds to develop food and skin allergies. Gastric Distention and Volvulus Bloat Canine bloat , or gastric distention and volvulus GDV , is a condition where the stomach swells abnormally. Bloat is a serious condition that requires immediate emergency care. Dogs of all shapes and sizes can bloat, but some breeds are more susceptible than others. Unfortunately, Labradors are at the top of the list for susceptibility to this condition. The causes of bloat in Labs and other dogs are unknown, but there is likely a genetic element. Dogs who recover from bloating should never be used as breeding stock again. Got a Lab? Between 8 weeks and 10 months, your puppy has a ton of growing to do, and they change drastically from month to month. Each stage of growth requires specific attention, exercise, and diet, so there is much to learn and pay attention to these different growth stages. There may be behavioral challenges while your pup adjusts to their new life without their mother and siblings. This period of adjustment can sometimes lead to fearful and timid behavior, and your puppy will need as much attention and affection as possible. They should be eating 3—4 small meals a day at this stage. You can begin basic command, leash, and potty training at this point too. Although the schedule is not complete this is a critical period to begin socialization and making sure they are calm and friendly with other dogs, just make sure they are also vaccinated. We highly recommend making training a part of their daily activities at this age. Biting can be an issue at this stage too, as they will begin teething, and they will start exploring and chewing whatever they can find. Chew toys and consistent command reinforcement are both vital for avoiding this behavior. The good news is that your puppy will grow out of this habit at around 6 months old. Your lab should also be house-trained by this point, but there may still be the occasional accident. Remember to be gentle but firm when this happens, and your pooch will likely move through it swiftly. They will begin losing their baby teeth at this point, and biting and chewing may reach its peak. Firm but gentle commands, chew toys, and loads of patience are essential at this stage. Your puppy will be testing the limits and may start showing dominance, ignoring known commands, and asserting more independence. You can now drop their meals down to two meals per day, but be sure that they are not eating too quickly. Your puppy will start to closely resemble an adult at 6 months, but remember that mentally, they are still puppies and will need loads of direction and training. Females may enter their first heat at 6—7 months, so keep a careful watch for stray males. They will still display puppy tendencies and traits and have a ton of excitable energy, but they should be fairly obedient and well-trained by this stage. Be sure to give your Labrador plenty of exercise at this stage to help keep them from misbehavior. They will have reached their full height by now but may still gain weight and muscle mass in the coming months. Unless you intend on breeding, you should consider neutering and spaying your puppy to avoid wandering and unwanted pregnancies. While some breeders recommend that you wait until a year old, this is a perfectly suitable time to perform the procedure. They may still gain weight and muscle mass but much slower than during the past few months. They will still display puppy characteristics and even test boundaries, but all in all, they should be obedient and well-trained by now. They will have a ton of energy and still enjoy playtimes and loads of exercise. While they are at their full height at this age, some Labs may appear lanky and still have weight to fill out in the coming months. When Do Labradors Stop Growing? All dogs are unique, and the question of when they stop growing is largely dependent on the individual. Anecdotally, your Lab should have reached their full weight by 18 months and full height by 9—12 months. Most breeders agree that your Lab will stop growing at some point during their second year. Even so, any weight gain during their second year will be minimal, and they will have done the majority of their growth by their first birthday. Mentally, they are out of the puppyhood phase of testing boundaries and disobedience by their first year— if correctly trained. If you have been consistent in training thus far, your Lab should be friendly, obedient, and well-behaved from their first birthday and into adulthood. In males, neutering can sometimes result in a calmer, more relaxed dog, and this, in turn, will slow down his need for exercise and may result in weight gain. A study in showed that dogs neutered before 37 weeks may gain more weight, while dogs that had the procedure after 37 weeks had a slower growth trajectory. The difference was minimal, though, and there is no reason to assume that these procedures have much of an effect on growth rates in dogs. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth While some puppies may grow quicker or slower than the agreed-upon average, this is usually nothing to be concerned about due to the individual and unique nature of dogs. However, if your pooch is gaining weight rapidly or not gaining enough, there may be deeper issues to look into. If your dog is from working or hunting stock, they may be smaller than average Labs and are usually lighter for work in the field. Size may also be genetic, and if your Lab comes from small parents, they will be smaller than average. The same may be true of heavier-than-average Labs—if their parents are large, they will likely be similar in size. However, larger-than-average weights may also be due to overfeeding or a lack of exercise , or a combination of both, so be sure to keep their exercise and feeding habits consistent. Image Credit: rebeccaashworth, Shutterstock Growth Distinctions of Different Labradors Although they are designated under the same breed, there are two different types of common Labradors: English and American. English Labradors tend to be stockier and more muscular than their American counterparts and have a thick, waterproof coat , while American Labs have a slender build with a slightly finer coat. English Labs are slightly shorter, topping out at around 22 inches, but their stocky and muscular build often makes them heavier than American Labs. In fact, English Labs have been known to weigh up to 20 pounds more than American Labs without being considered overweight. American Labs are known to be slightly more active and energetic than English Labs, while English Labs tend to be less excitable and more laid back. English Labs are by no means lazy, though, and they still have plenty of energy and stamina to go around. Conclusion: Monthly Labrador Growth Pictures Hopefully, this guide has helped you understand the growth rate of your Labrador puppy and given you a better idea of what to expect during the different stages. See also:. Labrador puppy weight. It can be hard to know what the right weight is for your specific pup. An American Lab is likely to weigh less than an English Lab in general, but not always! How much do Labs weigh in general? Male Labradors weigh between 60lbs and 80lbs, while females weigh in at between 55lbs and 75lbs. But many healthy Labradors fall outside these averages. As you can see, there is quite a range! Labrador Puppy Weight Lots of our readers want to know how much should my Labrador weigh at this age or that age. Labrador puppies are growing fast, and their weight is constantly changing. We used the data from our forum to create the Lab weight chart below. If you want a rough idea of how much your pup should weigh at different stages of their young life, just compare them to this chart and see how they match up. But remember, average Labrador weight is not totally straight forward… Average Labrador Weight Labradors come in a wide variety of sizes. So average Labrador Retriever weight figures can be misleading. As a very rough guide an adult female Labrador might weigh between 55 and 70lbs. An adult male Lab will weigh 65 — 80lbs. Female Lab weight will on average be lower than male Lab weight, but as you can see there is a considerable cross over. But Labradors also come in a couple of different types, and his type will have an impact upon his ideal Labrador weight. English Labs bred from show lines are likely to be at the upper end of the scale. You can expect English Lab weight to be around 60 — 70 lbs for a female and 70 — 80 lbs for a male. Some of our chunkier, show bred Labs can be a good twenty pounds or more heavier than their field bred cousins, without necessarily being overweight. Whereas the American Lab who is field bred is likely to be at the lower end of average. Volume for volume, muscle weighs more. So it is worth bearing in mind, that a very fit dog will have more muscle and may weigh more than an unfit dog of similar dimensions. Black Lab Weight In theory there should be no difference in weight between Labradors of different colors. Black Labrador weight for an English black Lab will probably be at the higher end of the range, for an American black Lab it will likely be lower. Black Labs are frequently found in both these categories, but some Lab colors differ. For example the chocolates. Chocolate Lab Weight Chocolate Labs are more likely to be show bred than field bred. English Labs weigh more than American Labs in general, and may therefore be at the higher end of average when it comes to weight. This is because yellow Labs are commonly found in both categories. White Labs are more likely to be English Labs, and will therefore probably be at the heavier end of the scale. Fox red Labs are normally American Labs, and will often be thinner in build and therefore lighter in weight. The way to effectively judge whether your Lab is at an ideal weight is not through the scales. It is by feel and appearance. You should not be able to see ribs, but if you press firmly along his sides you should just be able to feel your fingers bumping along them. But in most cases it really is not necessary to weigh your puppy every day, or even every week! Any more than you would weigh your three year old child on a daily or even weekly basis. There are however, some exceptions. Very thin puppies Occasionally we have people post up about puppies that are desperately underweight and clearly failing to thrive. Most of these comments come from people that have purchased puppies that are not ready to leave their mothers, and should not have been sold by the breeder. Some of these puppies are as young as three weeks old. If you have inadvertently been sucked into this horrible trade in underage puppies, do contact a vet for help with feeding your puppy, as a matter of urgency. If you are concerned that your puppy might be seriously underweight, again, your vet is the first port of call. As a very rough guide, many Labrador puppies will weigh around a kilo for every week of their lives. So you would expect a ten week puppy to weigh something in the region of ten kilos or around twenty-two pounds. A twenty percent variation around this would be fairly normal. If your puppy falls outside this variation he may still be perfectly healthy, but if you are inexperienced, a check with the vet is a good way to put your mind at rest. Should I Weigh My Dog? You may need to weigh your dog if he needs medical treatment. Determining the appropriate dose of some drugs requires that we know the exact weight of the patient. But in this case your veterinarian will probably do it for you at their check-ups and assessments. The main reasons to weigh a dog are loss or gain. Trying to put weight on a very thin puppy? You may want to check your progress with regular weigh-ins for a while to make sure they are sufficiently gaining weight. Trying to help your adult Labrador weight decrease? Checking their weight each week will help you to know that you are succeeding, along with visual checks. How to weigh a dog If you need to weigh a puppy, and he is small enough to hold in your arms, you can do this at home. Just weigh yourself on the bathroom scales without him, then weigh yourself again whilst holding the dog, and subtract the first weight from the second. This is accurate enough for most purposes. Larger dogs will need to be weighed on purpose built scales. Most vet surgeries have one in the waiting room, and some pet stores have them too. Really tiny dogs can be weighed accurately on a good sized set of kitchen scales. For once, this is a situation where appearances really do count. Try to get into the habit of looking at your dog objectively and of avoiding comparing with other dogs, many of whom will be overweight. You may find that some other dog owners will tell you your nice slim Labrador is actually too thin. This happens a lot, largely because people are simply getting used to so many dogs being overweight, including some of those receiving the highest accolades in our show rings. Again, if you are worried, check with your vet, but the chances are if someone is telling you this that actually your dog is healthy, and it is really their dog who is overweight. The Lab puppy weight chart shows you the average weight for male and female Labs every month from 2 months old, up until 12 months if you have a puppy Lab, check out our New Puppy Checklist to learn more about what to bring home for your first 24 hours and beyond. Doing so helps you and your veterinarian keep your puppy healthy. Are There Different Sizes of Labradors? Among the retriever breeds, the Labrador is one of the largest, where an adult male can top the scales at 80 pounds. Labrador Retrievers may differ in size due to individual variation and outside influences, such as the amount or type of food they eat, the amount or frequency of exercise they get, or underlying health conditions that may affect appetite or growth. But overall, a retriever should ideally hit a 5 out of 9 on the body condition score, regardless of the actual weight number on a scale. A healthy size Labrador has an evident abdominal tuck and observable waist, viewed from both the side and top of the dog. The AKC considers Lab puppies to be in adulthood when they reach 12 to 18 months of age, though there are outliers — those who grow faster or slower, reaching maturity either before 1 year old or not until 2 years old. Like other large dog breeds, Labs go through multiple stages of puppyhood until they reach adulthood. The average height for Labrador puppies is largely unknown due to insufficient data, but the average adult Labrador Retriever gets to be about inches tall at the shoulder. These numbers are contingent on the puppy receiving top-notch care, good nutrition, and appropriate levels of exercise. Different factors, such as health, breeding practices, and nutrition, may alter these estimated numbers. The below Labrador weight calculator can help you determine approximately how big your Labrador will be. But there are dogs who will fall outside of these parameters. The Waltham Petcare Science Institute offers puppy growth charts for veterinarians to use with their clients. You can also learn more about the ideal size and weight at different ages for different breeds with our Goldendoodle growth chart , a Golden Retriever size chart , Great Dane growth chart , or Chihuahua size chart. For that advice, consult your veterinarian. However, their weight can vary quite a bit. Male and female Labrador Retrievers vary slightly in size. According to the official breed standards of the AKC , males weigh about pounds, while females weigh pounds. Almost all dogs fall within this guideline, though there may be a few rarer dogs just on the outside of the weight guidelines. Because of how carefully bred these dogs often are, this is extremely rare, though. Male Labrador Retrievers stand between .Females stand at .As you can see, males Labrador Retrievers can be a bit larger than females, though they may not necessarily be. This is particularly true for American Labs. In other countries, the weight and height minimum for males is often higher than it is in America. What does a 4-month Labrador Retriever weigh? From their birth to about six months, Labrador Retriever puppies grow very rapidly. Right after birth, they often gain about two pounds a week or more. This rapid weight continues as the puppy ages. By four months, most Labrador Retrievers weigh about 25 pounds. Smaller dogs will often stay smaller at this point, while larger dogs often stay bigger. How big is a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever? Labrador Retrievers should continue to gain at least two pounds a week until they reach six months old. Most of them will gain even more than this, putting the average weight of a 6-month-old Lab at 50 pounds. That is double what they weighed at four months. However, six months does mark the end of this rapid period of growth. The average Labrador will typically start growing slower at this point, though they will still grow for quite a while. When is a Labrador Retriever fully grown? Most Labrador Retrievers reach their full height at around six to 12 months. Typically, they grow very quickly in the first six months of their life, but this growth slows down considerably after the sixth month. After that, they may still continue to gain a little bit of height, but their full adult height has basically been reached. Many dogs are often lanky during this period for this reason. However, once they reach their full height, the calories can be put towards muscle gain and fat storage. Too many calories can make the dog grow too quickly, which can cause hip dysplasia and other problems. Your dog will have plenty of time to bulk up. Because all Retrievers such as also Flat-Coated and Golden Retrievers are very food-motivated, you need to be careful to not overfeed your dog. Is a Labrador a medium or large dog? Technically, a Labrador Retriever can fall into either the medium or large category. They straddle the line as a breed. Individual dogs will either fall at the upper end of the medium category or rest just inside the large category. For this reason, they are often described as medium-to-large-sized dogs. What is a healthy weight for a Labrador? This depends on the dog. The health range for a Labrador is pounds if they are a male and pounds if they are a female. That is a large range. A dog that is naturally 55 pounds would be terribly overweight at 80 pounds. They will be able to accurately weigh your dog and determine if they are a healthy weight or not. Why is my Labrador so skinny? Many Labradors will appear skinny as puppies. It takes them until about the age of two to bulk up to their adult weight. They will bulk up naturally as they age. Gaining weight too fast can put unnecessary strain on their joints, which can cause health problems further down the road. It may seem that your Lab practically stops growing after about six months. However, they do have growth spurts after this, and they are all focused on muscle and fat gain. This especially applies if your Labrador is a senior dog that has stopped eating.
