Things to Avoid Suggestions on how to choose a breed Visit several dogs shows locally and meet the dogs and their owners. Ask questions! Most people are willing to talk for hours about their precious pooches, after they've finished in the ring. You can find out what's involved in keeping a Bearded Collie in show coat hours and hours , whether you can keep a Samoyed white in our red mud, or whether a Silky Terrier would be a good dog with toddlers. After deciding on a breed or breeds that you are interested in, visit and talk to as many breeders as you can. Investigate health and temperament problems in the breed of choice. The library will also have information. Almost every AKC recognized breed club sponsors a rescue program. Generally the dogs available through rescue programs are housebroken, neutered or spayed adults, vet and temperament checked. Finding the right Breeder Once you have decided which breed is for you, now comes the hard part--finding the right breeder and the right puppy! Chances are, the Golden Retriever puppies offered in the local newspaper bear no resemblance to the Golden Retriever you fell in love with when watching the Westminster Kennel Club show on television. The Huntsville Kennel Club offers the following advice: Talk to and visit as many breeders as possible. Are the premises clean? Are the puppies clean and well cared for? Ask to see the parents. They should be well groomed, friendly and should resemble the dog you saw on television at Westminster or at the dog show. Generally, responsible, ethical breeders: Offer health and temperament guarantees on every puppy they sell. Carefully plan each litter to improve the breed. Test and screen all breeding stock for genetic problems. Require pet quality puppies to be spayed or neutered. Will be available to answer questions and help with problems throughout the puppy's life. Will give you the "third degree". A concerned, responsible breeder has put in a lot of time, effort and money to produce good quality dogs and wants to ensure the puppies well being. Are members of their nationally regional breed club. If not, why not? Why did you breed this litter? Why did you choose to breed this particular sire to this particular dam? Have the sire and dam been tested for all genetic problems in this breed? Can you explain the pedigree to me? What do all these letters mean? What are the terms of your sales contract? What health and temperament guarantees are in your contract? Are you keeping a puppy from this litter? May I have names and numbers of persons who have purchased puppies from you in the past? Beginning Golden Retriever training in the home also helps owners bond with their pup so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. Read on to learn more about the Dog Training Elite Huntsville training method. Golden Retriever training can help you establish routines and learn how to be consistent about enforcing them. All Sizes. All Ages. The Dog Training Elite Difference Dog Training Elite Huntsville uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite Huntsville never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite Huntsville training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your Golden Retriever puppy into a loyal and loving companion? Our puppy has learned so much and now both of us feel confident with each other. Thanks so much JB for training us. There are several packages and training by options to fit multiple needs. The trainers are all great! We worked mostly with JB working on obedience and some behavior issues we were having. Highly recommend!!

Life Span Did You Know? One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they come in many colors. Silver Labrador Retrievers, or Silver Labs, are relatively new compared to the other Lab coat colors. Contrary to their Yellow, Chocolate, and Black Lab cousins, which have recorded sightings from and before, Silver Labs have only cropped up since .There was some heated debate over their authenticity, as many breeders believed the silver tint appeared from outside the breed. A diluting factor in coat color dominance traits is responsible for the silver hue — something that is also present in Charcoal and Champagne Labs as well. At any rate, Silver Labrador Retrievers are regal, loyal, and friendly Labradors that have a lot of energy and a lot of love to give! Silver Labs are curious and playful dogs. Their curiosity will often get the better of them and they may wander off in search of adventure if they are off-leash. Labrador Retrievers are known for their gentle, friendly dispositions and good natures. Well-socialized Labs tend to get along with children, other dogs, and even other pets and strangers. Because of this they make the ideal family dog and are one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Despite being one of the most active dog breeds , Silver Labrador Retrievers are highly adaptable. They prefer bigger spaces to stretch their legs and explore. As one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures , they will often take an outside adventure over an inside one any day. But, they will also just be happy to be spending time with you. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Silver Labs are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. They are happiest when they are spending time with their favorite humans, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Silver Labrador Retriever can include elbow dysplasia , hip dysplasia, hereditary myopathy, heart disease, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. A condition called exercise-induced collapse EIC has a genetic link and can occur in young adult Labradors. Good breeding practices and the health of the parents make a big difference in the health of Silver Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Silver Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk for bloat. Silver Labs are one of the smartest dog breeds. They pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Despite their energy and getting bored easily, they are still a great fit for dog owners of any experience level. Labrador Retrievers are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Silver Labrador Retrievers have short, water-resistant fur in two layers. Because of this dense double coat that protects them from the cold, and being one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , they may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. They shed year-round and more heavily twice a year when seasons change. Plus, your Lab will love spending the time with you. Trimming their nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Regularly checking ears and cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs , like daily brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed, is important to prevent the tartar buildup that causes painful dental diseases later in life. Silver Labrador Retrievers need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. Although they are high-energy dogs, Silver Labs will tend to mellow out a little bit as they get older. Labrador Retrievers tend to have an extended puppyhood and maintain that puppy-like energy until they are around years old. Swimming is a great low-impact activity. Once your Lab puppy is cleared for more intense activity, you can try a lot of different activities with them. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Labs are also athletic and versatile dogs that tend to be a good fit for a wide range of activities. Fully-grown Silver Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Silver Labs generally live for years on average. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds used as guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They are also commonly found working as police or military dogs. They are even one of the best dog breeds for farms! Featured Silver Labrador Retriever Article. We have a small family run farm on 14 acres. Let us know what you are looking for and we will find the right puppy for you! About our Wonderful Labs. The Labrador Retriever loves to retrieve. Show a Lab to water and it will retrieve all day: balls, sticks, small boats and even children who might happen to go for a swim. Descended from dogs found in Newfoundland by explorers, fishermen and settlers, the Labrador Retriever evolved by natural selection. An excellent retriever of fish and game, these dogs have been known by several names, among them the Black Water Dog, the Lesser Newfoundland and the St. John's Dog. In the early s, the breed was introduced to Britain, where it was eventually crossed with other sporting breeds. The final product was the strong, sturdy, happy Labrador Retriever, which is America's most popular dog, thanks to its outgoing, eager-to-please and loving temperament. Males usually measure .Weight for males ranges from 65 to 80 pounds, with females averaging about 10 pounds less. The coat is short, dense and hard in colors of black, yellow, silver, charcoal, chocolate and many shades in the middle such as the white and champagne Lab. The AKC only allows black, chocolate and yellow to place in the show ring but that doesn't stop us from loving the other colors! A simple good brushing will remove dead hair and keep the coat shiny. A distinctive feature of the breed is the medium-long tail. Thick and round at the root and gradually tapering to the tip, it is often described as an otter tail. This tail can clear a coffee table in seconds! The Labrador is easy to train and excels as a field dog as well as obedience trials. Labs enjoy all outdoor exercise but are especially fond of swimming. They say this medium-sized, high-energy dog is best suited to a suburban or country home with a yard and a family that can provide it with the activity it loves--but that said, many city-dwelling Lab owners tell us it is the most wonderful "city" dog they have ever had! City, country or anywhere in between, the Lab is simply the best! A fun, lovable pup is the perfect addition to a happy home. Whether you're looking for a hunting dog or a jogging companion, our puppies are perfect for you. Contact As a breeder that lab lovers trust, Silver and Charcoal Kennels welcome your inquiries! There are no rare colors in Labradors. There are three accepted colors, Black, yellow and Chocolate. The AKC standard defines shades of yellow as Light cream to fox red. Chocolates are defined as being light to dark chocolate. They are worth no more than their other yellow siblings. Is there anything wrong with breeding the lightest yellow color in Labs? Absolutely not. They can be shown, they are correct. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black—Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow—Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate—Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification. There is a reason reputable breeders do not sell them — It is not a Labrador color. This is unlike brindle colored Labs and Black and tan happen, and are seldom produced see my article , so do other unusual non-standard colors. This is different. Any breeder who breeds more than a couple of litters will, in time, produce a mismark. Contrary to the claim on one silver site, nobody feels shame when they produce a mismark. How different? Some say deliberately through mixed breeding when the breed was developed, some say deliberately created by recent mix breeding, and some say through a genetic fluke. The term dilute has a genetic basis. The Weimaraner is an example of a brown dog with a diluted coat color. DNA was not available back then. The eval was done by photographs, observing living specimens and pedigrees. It was the best guess for the cause of the trait that they could give at the time. Fast forward to today, when DNA can now show us things we could not see before. The pet owning public is being duped into believing that these animals are desirable, purebred, and rare and therefore warrant special notoriety or a premium purchase price. Through DNA, color including the colors the dog carries can be absolutely proven. They are simply part and parcel of the three colors in Labradors. Black, yellow and chocolate. It is believed that some blue dogs are more prone to skin problems and perhaps allergies than dogs that are black. A DNA test on a dog can only show that a canine is a canine, that mom is mom, and Dad is dad and grandparents are the grandparents, if DNA was harvested from those dogs , and it can show the color traits and other traits it carries, as well as other traits that have been mapped. You may have heard that there are DNA tests that show what breed your dog is. Every genetic expert will tell you these tests are false and results are shady at best. One could not prove by DNA on a canine, that a dog several generations back was not a Labrador. I know other breeders who have been breeding chocolates for over 35 years, and have yet to produce it. Interestingly, the kennel who first started producing the color could only get it by inbreeding. Nothing will set a trait like inbreeding will of course it will produce negative traits as well. I can answer that for you — NONE. Because it would be considered a disqualifiable fault. They can not compete in conformation. Just because a dog was once registered as silver, does not make the color correct, or valid. The breed parent clubs do! Exhibits are judged against individual breed standards, which have been established for the AKC-recognized breeds by their parent clubs. These written standards describe the ideal size, color, and temperament of each breed, as well as correct proportion, structure, and movement. This is a misleading statement. Yes, unusual colors have cropped up throughout the history of Labradors. There are disqualifying colors and markings in all breeds. In order to maintain a standard, acceptable colors were defined, and written into the breed standards. I was there. The AKC agreed. In reality, the Silver puppies they kill have the same genetic make-up as the blacks, yellows, and chocolates they allow to survive. The only ethic these breeders are protecting is the ethical investment they have in their black and yellow bloodlines. Mismarked puppies occur all the time. This entire quote is intended to yank at your heart strings, and paint reputable breeders as heartless creatures. I have been very involved in the Labrador community nation wide for almost 30 years, and know of NO reputable breeder today who has even produced a silver, let alone euthanize it. I belong to several web forums of Labrador breeders, and when asked what they would do if it were even possible for them to produce a silver none of them had , what would they do with it? Answer — sell it just like any mismarked puppy, at a reduced price. I myself have produced mismarks as all breeders eventually will if they stay in the sport long enough , and sell them at a reduced cost to pet homes, who are thrilled to have this dog, which is a Labrador through-and-through, however, mismarked. I would not euthanize a puppy because of color, and I know of no breeder, of the thousands of breeders I am involved with who would. That was LONG ago, and long before safe spay and neuter practices, and limited registrations. And how do you get a pedigree from at least one of these kennels? Well you pay money for the privilege of having an outsourced agency send you the pedigree. How much money? Far more than the current postage of three pieces of paper can justify. A reputable breeder is more than happy to share their pedigrees, and many post them on their websites for your immediate review. This is a statement intended to mislead and misinform the unknowing reader. Well over 20 years ago, there were chocolate champions! I wonder how chocolate mutated from the yellow, when the chocolates showed up first? They were quite established long before that, and their genetics well known. So, what do the people who want to charge you more money for a non-recognized color do? Before you purchase a registered puppy, it would do you well to establish if the registry is recognized by the dog fancy in general. Another way to determine how reputable a registry is, would be to find out how many dogs are registered annually. The American Kennel Club was established in .The AKC sponsors over 15, dog competitions each year. Currently, the AKC recognizes breeds of dogs. The American Kennel Club registers over one million dogs annually. The Canadian Kennel Club was established in, and recognizes over breeds of dogs. The CKC registers approximately , purebred dogs annually. I will let you be the judge, as there is no evidence at this time, one way or the other. However, it is interesting to note that Silver Labradors can be traced back to two breeders. Both of their lines trace back to Kellogg kennels L. Kellogg and Harold E. Kellogg Kellogg Kennels began breeding Labradors in .First, you need to learn what the breed traits are Weim vs. Please note comparisons to the standards of the breeds breed standard excerpts below : long houndy ears, vs. Note: houndy expression vs. Note, light eyes vs. Note double coat vs. Eye color should be brown in black and yellow Labradors, and brown or hazel in chocolates. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Here at Frenchie Kisses Kennel you will not find "a breeder. We maintain a small Hobby program and breed for quality, rather than quantity. This ensures that you get a puppy that is healthy, beautiful, and has a great temperament. It is very convenient being close to Portland, Oregon because it makes for a nice day trip for our adoptive families in the Portland area to visit their puppy regularly as it grows. Since My son and Daughter In Law work at home we are able to spend time both indoors and outdoors with all of the animals. However, French Bulldogs are more suited for indoor living as opposed to outdoors. We do like to bring them out when the weather is moderate. At Frenchie Kisses Kennel we keep a close watch on the dogs as we wander about and if they seem a bit tired we simply return them to our air conditioned or heated in the winter home. Luckily the weather here in Washington State does not have horrible extremes so air conditioning and a good wood stove keeps their life very comfortable. French Bulldogs overheat easily because of their overly large chest and compacted air way, along with their insistence on being active. Their bulk and being Brachycephalic makes it impossible for them to regulate their temperature efficiently. In addition, Frenchies are top heavy and therefore have a difficult time swimming. We are very cautious when exercising them during hot or humid weather, and at times must insist they take a break. Though they tend to love the water, they must not be left alone in water as they may not be able to get out after exhausting themselves trying to swim. French Bulldogs are known as non swimmers. That's not to say that they are dogs of little brain. It's more like their "can do," can't keep up with their "want to. We love that the dogs want to be with us, very close by when we are walking around on the property. Washington is Cougar country and we would not want them to wander far so we do keep a close watch on them when we have them out. They all tend to get along with the cats and we are working hard to convince them that all animals are our friends. Since the Frenchies are so rambunctious it is hard to convince all of our pets that they are sweet, friendly dogs. I have my mind set that all my pets are going to get along and I am hoping that my will is stronger than a Bulldog! The puppies are exposed to the cats at a young age to instill a respect for other animals. Our cats are everywhere we now have five the puppies can have access to. We also have volunteer feral cats, that we are pretty sure come from a catch and release program in our area as they just appear with ears notched and previously spayed or neutered. The puppies only meet one of them He has become an outside pet only does not like to be confined kitty and occasionally comes to the door to see what is going on. He is friendly with the dogs and puppies. Three of our cats are both indoors and outdoors so the puppies learn early on that cats are their friends. We now have three Chickens that wander the property during the day. We hope to also use them to condition the puppies to being comfortable with birds. This makes for very sweet gentle puppies as they mature. We are also able to care for them individually if they become sick and give them excellent medical attention. We have a wonderful vet who has taught us how to do much of the necessary medical care at home since we are 45 minutes from any Veterinarian. Sometimes without the training he has provided us we would lose puppies due to no access to immediate care. We can and do give mouth to mouth resuscitation if needed. We will do anything necessary to save a puppy or dog. We love them for the wonderful little family additions that they are. We now offer training packages for our puppies: Child Tolerance. Be mindful of the first few days The next thing would be to prepare yourself for the next few days. Remember, all young dogs form a bond with their family and a previous owner. Thus, separating a two-month-old Frenchie can be stressful not only to you but primarily to your pet. Whatever the breed, they still pack animals, meaning they need their parents to survive in the first few months. The separation from their parents can mean danger. Thus, it would be best to prepare yourself for nights of whining, howling, squealing, and restlessness. The first few nights might be truly tough. Still, try your best to hold on and put the puppy in a place where it will not feel alone. It would also be best if you make a schedule with your family for the first few days. You can decide who among your family will play with the puppy. Giving the pup plenty of attention will relieve the separation anxiety and make the housebreaking process much more efficient. Make the ride home comfy If you took your Frenchie home through a car ride, it would be best to make it as comfortable as possible. In short, it would be best to have someone to accompany your pet instead of leaving it in a crate or alone in the backseat. Getting a health check If possible, it would be best to have your vet examine the puppy while still with the breeder. This way, you can make sure the pup is healthy. For this reason, always make sure you remember and follow all instructions. This way, you can take care of your pet easier. Choosing a Good French Bulldog Seller and Breeder While all French Bulldog pups are excellent pets, you can still go wrong if you choose the wrong breeder. If you want the best care and support for your pup, you also need to find a reputable breeder. In general, you can take these things as your guide in finding the right breeder: A reputable breeder will show all paperwork A reputable breeder would be proud to show all the paperwork it has for your pup. It includes the pedigree and health clearances. Thus, it will ask all kinds of questions. Thus, it breeds pups but not much and lets the parents rest and not mate all the time. A reputable breeder will provide you with feedback from other customers A reputable breeder would be proud to show the feedback and experiences of other customers. In fact, he or she will even show a connection to other breeders and vets. A reputable breeder would show his or her breeding experience. A reputable breeder would show the dogs in recognized confirmation shows. Further, he or she should have strong connections with other breeders. A reputable breeder only breeds a single type A reputable breeder shows its expertise if they focus only on a single breed and not multiple ones. Other states. Learn more » Golden Retrievers are known for their long, silky, golden coats. Golden Retrievers can develop dry, flaky skin as a result of a number of conditions—one of them being ichthyosis. What Is Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers? Ichthyosis is a genetic disease affecting the skin of Golden Retrievers. Other breeds can be affected by this condition as well, however, they tend to develop a more severe form of the disease. Ichthyosis is caused by a genetic mutation. Scientists have identified two genetic variants that are associated with the disease. It is hypothesized that, as a result of the mutation, the cells in the outermost layer of skin, known as keratinocytes, do not form properly. This causes scaling and peeling of the skin. Ichthyosis shows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Therefore, the disease is not related to the sex of the dog, and both male and female Golden Retrievers can be affected. Therefore, for a dog to show signs of the disease, both its parents must carry the gene. The parents may have two copies of the mutated gene and, therefore, show signs of the disease and appear scaly. Althernatively, they may have one normal gene and one mutated gene, therefore appearing normal. A puppy may get one mutated gene from each parent and develop scaly skin, or it may get one mutated gene and one normal gene from each parent and look normal. In the latter scenario, the puppy becomes a carrier of the disease and it may pass on the mutated gene to its own puppies in the future. Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis have mild to moderate scaling of the skin , predominately on the trunk. The head, limbs, paw pads, and nose are usually not affected. There is no sex predilection for ichthyosis—both male and female dogs can be affected. The scales range in size from small to large, and vary in color from white to grey. The scales tend to be white in young dogs, and progressively blacken and become rough and dry with age. Affected dogs sometimes appear dirty, especially as the pigmented scales shed and adhere to the coat. The skin is usually not itchy or inflamed, but affected dogs may develop secondary yeast or bacterial infections as a result of the disease, which may result in inflammation and itching. Scaling may be seen within the first 3 weeks of life, but can also take up to 3 years for dogs to show any symptoms. The majority of affected dogs are diagnosed with this disease by one year of age. What is the Treatment for Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers? Treatment is tailored to the individual dog depending on its symptoms, and usually includes frequent brushing, medicated shampoos to remove scales, and moisturizing rinses. A diet rich in fatty acids may also be beneficial to reduce symptoms of the disease. If there are any secondary skin infections present, the dog will also need to receive treatment for those. Oral isoretinoin may also be effective at treating this disease. A study published in looked at the the effectiveness of oral isoretinoin in the treatment of ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers. Retinoids are a class of chemicals that are structurally and functionally related to vitamin A. Retinoids offer several benefits, including decreasing thickening and scaling of the skin, and are used to treat a form of ichthyosis that occurs in people known as Autosomal Recessive Congenital Ichthyoses ARCI. The study showed that oral isotretinoin was effective in improving ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers without any side effects. What is the prognosis? Although ichythosis is an incurable disease, it can be managed with commitment to the treatment plan. How is ichthyosis diagnosed in Golden Retrievers? The diagnosis can be confirmed with a biopsy of the skin. A biopsy is a procedure to remove a small section of tissue so that it can be examined under a microscope by a veterinary pathologist. Genetic testing is also available to identify the mutation responsible for the disease. The test will be able to tell if your dog is a carrier of the disease, even if it looks normal. My Golden Retriever has scaly skin. Does this mean they definitely have ichthyosis? There are many causes of scaling skin in Golden Retrievers other than ichthyosis. These should be ruled out before a diagnosis of ichthyosis is made. Image Credit: pixels, Shutterstock Final Thoughts Ichthyosis is a hereditary skin condition affecting Golden Retrievers that is caused by a genetic mutation. This mutation prevents the outer layer of the skin from developing properly, which causes the skin to scale and flake. Ichthyosis is an incurable disease but it can be managed with a combination of brushing , medicated shampoos , moisturizing rinses, and a diet high in omega 3s. Oral isoretinoin shows promise as a potential treatment for this disease. Additional Details Ichthyoses are a group of genetic skin disorders characterized by defects in the formation of the stratum corneum the outer layer of the epidermis that result in scaling of the skin and desquamation shedding of the outer layer of the skin, or more colloquially, skin peeling. In the Golden Retriever, symptoms of a breed-specific ichthyosis include mild to moderate, and in some cases severe, generalized scaling on the body, usually excluding the head, extremities, paw pads, and nose. The scales are initially a whitish color but becomes pigmented, progressing to gray or black, and they range in size from small to large. Age of onset is generally early: clinical signs have been detected as early as weeks of age in some dogs, although in others, the signs may not become readily apparent until months or even years later. Early symptoms of the disease may go unnoticed by owners due in part to their subtly and the less severe symptoms noted in the Golden Retriever when compared to other dog breeds. In humans, over 30 different genes that result in various ichthyoses have been identified. In dogs, at least 12 different breed-specific types of ichthyosis have been described, but genetic mechanisms have only been identified in a few breeds. An insertion-deletion variant often referred to as an indel in the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 1 PNPLA1 gene was identified as perfectly correlated with the congenital ichthyosis disease in Golden Retrievers. In total, Golden Retrievers were evaluated in the initial study and this variant was perfectly concordant with disease status, providing evidence that this variant is responsible for disease. Additionally, this variant was absent in healthy dogs from 25 other breeds. It is predicted that this variant also denoted as c. Though the exact consequences of this protein truncation are currently unknown, it is hypothesized that this defective PNPLA1 protein causes lipid defects and does not allow the proper formation of keratinocytes the cells in the epidermis that produce keratin in the outermost layer of skin. A study published in looked at 14 Golden Retrievers diagnosed with congenital ichthyosis that did not have the PNPLA1 variant and identified a second genetic variant strongly associated with congenital ichthyosis in the breed. The variant identified in the ABHD5 gene consists of a 14 bp deletion denoted as c. The study showed that the variant was only present in North American Golden Retrievers, being absent in over Golden Retrievers of European origin. The clinical and histological presentation of ICH2 is similar to that seen with ICH1, although the researchers noted that breeders reported more severe and adherent scaling with ICH2. Both types of congenital ichthyosis in the Golden Retriever are inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Two copies of either variant must be present for the disease to manifest, and both sexes are equally affected. Testing for this variant can assist veterinarians with diagnosis and helps breeders identify carriers among breeding stock to select appropriate mates that will reduce the risk of producing affected offspring. To avoid the possibility of producing affected puppies, matings between known carriers is not recommended. However, with the reportedly high frequency, it is advisable to select away from this mutation over several generations to assist in maintaining diversity. This assay does not detect the ichthyoses variants found in other breeds Type of Sample. Add To Cart Search Tests Common Symptoms Ichthyosis golden retriever type is an inherited condition of the skin affecting golden retrievers. The age of onset and severity of disease are highly variable, however most affected dogs present before one year of age with flaky skin and dull hair. Over time the skin develops a grayish color and appears thick and scaly, especially over the abdomen. While the prognosis is generally good for affected dogs, they are at increased risk for skin infections. Ichthyosis golden retriever type is inherited in an Autosomal Recessive manner in dogs meaning that they must receive two copies of the mutated gene one from each parent to develop the disease. In general, carrier dogs do not have features of the disease but when bred with another carrier of the same Mutation , there is a risk of having affected pups. Reliable genetic testing is important for determining breeding practices. Because some affected dogs exhibit very mild symptoms, genetic testing should be performed before breeding. In order to eliminate this mutation from breeding lines and to avoid the potential of producing affected pups, breeding of known carriers to each other is not recommended. Golden retrievers that are not carriers of the mutation have no increased risk of having affected pups. There may be other causes of this condition in dogs and a normal result does not exclude a different mutation in this gene or any other gene that may result in a similar genetic disease or trait. Toggle navigation My Cart. It does not cause itching, scabbing, or hot spots. Ichthyosis is not the same thing as allergies. In Golden Retrievers, it is usually very mild. However, in other breeds it can be much more severe. The Golden Retriever Club of America says that it is a rare condition even though a high percentage of dogs are testing positive for it. A few breeders are making a big deal out of it. We, along with a growing number of other breeders are taking a middle of the road approach. We do the test and use the results in making good breeding decisions. At the same time, we feel that this is a minor issue and that there are many other concerns that are more important. Ichthyosis is doggy dandruff. When a dog has symptoms, those symptoms are usually a light flaking of skin. There can, however, be a wide range of possibilities with regard to the severity of the condition. Many I would venture to say most dogs that receive DNA results that indicate that they are affected with Ichthyosis have no flakes or any other kind of skin problem. Some dogs with Ichthyosis have a light flaking of skin, most noticable when brushing. It does happen at times, however, that Ichthyosis is bad enough for there to be a constant flaking of skin. Even then, it is more of a nuisance to the owner than a bother to the dog. A severe case could cause a dog to leave flakes of skin wherever he sits or lies. These cases are not common. By far, the majority of Golden cases are very mild. Ichthyosis is a Cosmetic Issue. It Is Not the Same as Allergies. Ichthyosis is not anything like allergies that many Golden Retrievers suffer from. Ichthyosis very rarely bothers a dog. Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers whether in its mildest form or its most severe is simply dandruff or flaky skin. However, brushing, mild shampoos and conditioners, and a diet high in fatty acids usually controls Ichthyosis well. I have heard of several affected dogs who had flakes to totally disappear after just a change in diet. They type dog food being fed greatly affects the expression of Ichthyosis. Ichthyosis is a recessive trait. This means that both parents have to carry the Ichthyosis form of this particular gene for expression of it. If either parent is clear, there is no chance of any puppies being affected. The DNA test can yield three different results: affected, carrier, and clear. This means that a DNA test will show them to be carriers of 2 copies of the gene. They could have clinical symptoms. A dog that is a carrier will have no chance of having the condition, either by DNA test or clinically. A carrier is simply a dog with only one copy of the defective allele for the gene. Statistics and Frequency of Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers The statistics on the percentage of Goldens with Ichthyosis according to the DNA test would be quite disturbing if the statistics for the number of Goldens with actual symptoms matched those DNA statistics. There is, a huge difference between the two. What a difference in the statistics! There are links at the bottom of this article to the GRCA and to Antigene where you can read these statistics for yourself. Also, dogs with a positive DNA test but with no symptoms tend to produce symptom-free puppies. Keeping this fact in view is key in wisely using the DNA test. The more prudent approach to breeding away from Ichthyosis is to breed unclear dogs in lines who have clinical cases of Ichthyosis only to clear dogs, to pursue a goal of eliminating the condition all together over 6 -8 generations, to use the DNA test in making good breeding decisions, to continue doing the test and using the results wisely, to be open and honest to the public about what you have, and to use good common sense about it realizing that there are other issues in our breed that need greater attention. Ichthyosis in the Breed Over the Past 10 Years Starting 10 years ago when the test first came out, we at Summer Brook decided to test for Ichthyosis, but to not make it a priority. An affected diagnosis did not always or even usually mean a dog has a skin problem. Also, the number of English Goldens who had been tested that were clear made it unwise to put so much importance on this cosmetic issue. When the test first came out and I went looking for a suitable stud for my own Ichthyosis carrier, I found only 7 clear males in the entire country. Then, as I checked into these 7 males, I found that ALL of them were either too closely kin to my own girl or had other health issues that were far more problematic than ichthyosis. At that time, there were too many other more important considerations in deciding on a breeding. Ichthyosis Will Not Affect Summer Brook Puppies However, starting in , we had bred it out of most of our dogs and had mostly clear dogs with a few exceptions that were carriers. These carriers will never be bred to anything except a clear. Because Ichthyosis is carried on a recessive gene, there is no chance of a puppy being affected as long as at least one parent is clear. All of our breedings involve a clear parent. We have had two dogs with an affected DNA diagnosis in the past. Neither of these two past Summer Brook affected dogs had symptoms that anyone except for me was aware of. I saw a few flakes on one dog one time when she was pregnant and only saw them when I was grooming her. The other dog never had any symptoms whatsoever to my knowledge. However, since then, I have talked to many breeders who know of dogs with significant issues. All Summer Brook puppies are inside companions. Almost All Good Breeders Incorporate Ichthyosis Testing in Their Programs As testing has become more prevalent over the past years, more and more breeders are slowly weeding it out of their lines. Currently my advice for those looking for a Golden Retriever puppy is to only look at breeders that test for it and only from breedings where at least one parent is clear. As recently as sever or eight years ago, it was difficult to find such breedings. Today, most good breeders are including Ichthyosis as part of their normal testing protocol. View Larger Image Ichthyosis in golden retrievers Excessive scale or dandruff flakes Several breeds of dog, notably the Golden Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier and Bulldog, can be affected by excessive flaking of the skin. This is present from birth, but may be very mild, so is not noticed until later in life. The belly may also have darkly pigmented, dry skin. It does not tend to be itchy unless there is also infection present with bacteria and yeast. The changes in the skin make it easier for infections to take hold. Owners typically notice large flakes of skin present in the fur when brushing their dog, or on the floor in areas where they spend time. Golden Retrievers typically have a very mild form of this disease, whereas other breeds can be more badly affected. How do dogs get Ichthyosis? This disease is inherited and multiple puppies in a litter may have the disease. It has what is called a recessive mode of inheritance, which means that both parents must carry the gene for the puppies to show signs. The parents may have two disease genes and so are scaly themselves or one normal gene and one diseased gene, so they look normal. If the puppies in the litter get one disease gene from each of their parents they will be affected with the scaling disease, which can be seen when you look at them. Alternatively, if they just get one diseased gene and one normal gene, they will look normal but will be at risk of passing the disease on if they have puppies in future. Testing for Ichthyosis? There are many other causes of scaling in dogs, so these should be ruled out by a veterinarian before a diagnosis of ichthyosis is made. In Golden Retrievers there is a genetic test available, which is recommended if you are planning to breed your dog. This will tell you if your dog is a carrier of the disease, even if they look normal. By responsible testing and breeding, this disease can be avoided in future generations of puppies. Results are normally back in weeks. Treatment for Ichthyosis? Treatment is tailored to the needs of each individual dog. The scaling cannot be cured, but in many mild cases can be managed by conscientious bathing and moisturising. In more severe cases oral medication may be needed which can help but not cure the problem. Related Posts. It is an autosomal recessive genetic mutation; which means that when genetically tested a dog must have both recessive mutation traits to be affected. Symptoms Affected dogs cannot form the outer layer of the epidermis properly; this results in excessive flaking, discoloration, greasy spots and possible hardening of the skin. The darkening of the skin and flaking makes it appear dirty. Symptoms can exhibit in forms from mild to severe, as well as cycle depending on hormones and stress. Treatment Treat Ichthyosis with special shampoos, diet, and stress management. We have found keeping the skin dry and clean improves symptoms. Additional issues associated with Ichthyosis such as fungal infections and yeast overgrowth. If your dog is affected, see a veterinarian to help come up with a specific treatment plan for your dog. Carriers of Ichthyosis and Breeding A dog can have an Ichthyosis trait but not have symptoms. Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs; this guarantees that they only produce other carriers or clear dogs. Responsible breeders will not do this. However, it can be challenging to manage, and uncomfortable for the dog. With the genetic testing available responsible breeders should never knowingly produce an affected dog. Spread the word.

Dilated pupils Stupor or coma Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, can quickly become an urgent health problem in toy and small-breed dogs, say experts. Without intervention, there is risk of dogs slipping into a coma and possibly dying. Juvenile hypoglycemia, which is seen in puppies less than 3 months of age, generally occurs because puppies have not fully developed the ability to regulate blood glucose concentration and have a high requirement for glucose. In toy and small-breed dogs that timeframe is greatly reduced when compared to larger dogs. A simple case of hypoglycemia is often due to overactivity combined with too much time between meals. Providing a simple sugar solution and hydrating liquid are key. I shake it out and wrap the puppy in it to bring up his body temperature. If the puppy seems to be getting better, I follow up by giving small amounts of warm sugar water over the next few minutes. A high-quality, nutritious dog food is important in helping to sustain a dog. Owners also should provide a warm environment. Though their capabilities certainly have a lot to do with intelligence, their excellent job performance can also be credited to their amazing adaptability. After all — they are super friendly! You may not want to trust your Golden Retriever to protect your home. Golden Retrievers are first and foremost devoted to their families. If an immediate threat was obvious, they may certainly step in. But when a stranger comes to the door, the typical reaction of a Golden is to bark until the new person comes to greet them. And before you know it, the new person has quickly become a new friend — no matter who they are! This is in part due to the fact that Golden Retrievers do not do well alone. It is recommended that Golden Retrievers never be left home alone for more than 4 hours at a time. Golden Retriever require a decent amount of both mental and physical stimulation otherwise they can resort to destructive behavior out of boredom. Most of the dogs we come across were not bred to hunt and retrieve. Instead they are bred to work as service dogs which means jumping into a body of water would not be looked highly upon when their job is to guide a blind person or open a door for a person in a wheel chair. However, you might have to teach them some of the nuances of the game of fetch. If your Golden is having some troubles with the game of fetch your might try reading this article on how to teach your dog to fetch. Goldens Are Mouthy Dogs What one person considers mouthy another might consider bitey. Anyhow, Golden Retrievers are mouthy. The bad news is they like to put their mouth on inappropriate things like your arms, hands, and legs. We often joke that Raven likes to shake hands with her mouth. Here are the top 5 dog breeds in Labrador Retriever. Christmas Eve morning and my four-year-old daughter, Hailey, was in the hospital again, this time in a brand-new wing of Swedish Issaquah Medical Center. She was the only pediatric patient. The doctor was with Hailey, waiting to talk to my husband, Gary, and me, but I paused for a moment in the hallway, bracing myself. An artificial tree, festooned with lights and ornaments, stood in the corner. Carols played over the PA. The staff had tried to give the place a festive air, but it felt grim and sterile to me. Hailey had battled chronic lung disease and epilepsy since birth. Even when she was home, she was mostly bedridden. A surgically inserted feeding tube kept her alive. Her big brother, Logan, and sister, Harmony, were wonderful to her, but when they went off to school or to play with friends, Hailey was left on her own. What kind of lonely life is this for a child? I just wanted my little girl to enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood. Gary and I had scrimped for months and managed to save enough for our family to celebrate. Then Hailey caught some kind of respiratory virus. In the middle of the night on December 23, she had such trouble breathing that her lips turned blue. I called .The diagnosis was acute pneumonia. If she comes home, I thought. Hailey lay in bed, her face as pale as the sheets, the sparkle in her eyes dimmed. The doctor spoke in a low voice to Gary and me, telling us Hailey needed immediate surgery to move the feeding tube from her stomach to her small intestine because she was aspirating fluid into her lungs. Hailey had been incredibly brave through all of her treatments over the years. How could I encourage her to keep fighting? Suddenly it hit me. The perfect solution, the thing she wanted most. I brought it up with Gary that evening when we went to the cafeteria to grab a bite. When I throw the ball, he brings it back. Simply having him lie next to her comforted her. And it was just goldens she responded to. A golden retriever. Way beyond our budget. We were living paycheck to paycheck. And we lived in an apartment with no yard—not the kind of place for a big, active dog. Besides the initial cost, there would be food and vet bills. He wanted Hailey to be healthy and happy as much as I did. But he was practical. I already worked full-time taking care of a child with disabilities, an ideal job because I could watch Hailey at the same time. Hailey kept talking the whole time about her dog: what she would name it, how much she would love it. At one point, the anesthesiologist had to tell her to slow down and take a breath. The surgery went smoothly, and three days later Hailey came home. But the journey to get her dog was only just beginning. I picked up odd jobs. I walked dogs, cleaned houses, worked for an on-call nanny agency at night while Gary watched the kids. Every Sunday night, we would empty the jar and count the money so we could see our progress. It took eight months, but by the following August we finally had enough money saved. We found a golden retriever breeder and made plans to pick a puppy from his next litter. New worries sprang up in my mind: What if the dog was too rough for Hailey? We met the breeder in the parking lot of a grocery store on a Saturday morning. It was a chaotic scene, with other families clamoring to play with the 15 adorable puppies waiting for homes. But soon she was taking him on walks. The first time was just to our mailbox. Gary went with her, and they would add a block or so with every walk until Hailey could walk for 20 minutes without losing her breath. She took over the responsibility of feeding Hunter. By December, she was eating small portions. Most important, Hunter was her best friend, her constant companion. Hailey still spent much of the day resting in bed. Hunter lay right next to her. One day, Hailey overheard me sharing my biggest worry with Gary, that she would never be able to lead a normal life. If God can get Hunter for me, surely God can take care of me! We had Hunter trained to alert to her seizures, and her health and confidence grew. At age 9, she was eating so well, the doctors removed her feeding tube. Our lives have grown as well. Hailey now has three younger siblings. Our next dream is launching a center to train service dogs for other families. Like Hailey, I have faith that God will help us get there.
