In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. Golden Retrievers are bred to hunt and herd. It is ingrained in them to want to do a job! They tend to be pretty high-energy and love to be kept busy with games and exercise. Because they may have a bit more energy than other breeds, they may sleep a little less than other breeds as well. Some owners I talked to said that if their Golden Retrievers are left home alone all day they tend to just sleep since there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to exercise. So as you can see their sleep schedule greatly depend on the kinds of habits you develop for your dog. At this time you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. Senior Golden retrievers will sleep hours a day on average as they get to be years old and older they could be sleeping up to 18 hours a day. For older Golden Retrievers, these could be signs of more serious issues such as dementia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or other conditions associated with older age. Your Golden Retriever may be waking up more at night because its bladder is getting older and they need to use the potty more often. You can try and help with this by taking them out right before bed and limiting their water intake just before bed as well. Can Golden Retrievers sleep outside? Golden Retrievers can sleep outside if they are provided with adequate shelter and brought inside in extreme weather. However, it is not recommended that Golden Retrievers sleep outside. After speaking to many Golden Retriever owners I found that the majority of them have their dog sleep inside. Most owners state their hot or humid climate as being the reason their dogs sleep indoors with them as well as their dogs need to be by their side following them around day and night. Here is the training we introduce or continue in week two home or a 9-week-old puppy. Training equipment for young Lab puppy In week one home, the only training equipment we used for Bubba was a nylon collar and a Flexi-lead. In week two, we will add a couple things. Puppy sized chain collar The first week home, Bubba was not very strong so hooking a Flexi-lead right to the nylon collar was all that was needed to control her on leash. In week two, Bubba is getting stronger. This can quickly create a bad habit of pulling on lead and is the source of frustration for many owners, especially down the road as the dog grows larger and even stronger. Adding a puppy-sized chain collar at this point is helpful. A chain collar will provide more pressure and allow for corrections, both of which the puppy needs to learn how to handle. But mostly, the chain collar gives you more control. Tie out or outdoor play area A tie out becomes very helpful as your puppy comes into week two. Since you must watch your puppy closely while they are not in a crate in the home so that you can catch your puppy in the act of having a potty accident a tie out can help take the burden off you for a little while. We use a cable tie out and a pound in post. Some people use outside cages or play pens. They should only be on the tie out for a limited time each day. This is not a whole day babysitter. One half-hour to one hour at a time is long enough followed by time in the crate to rest. Paint roller or puppy sized bumper In week two, we introduce formal retrieving. For Bubba, we use a full-sized paint roller, or a puppy sized canvas bumper for this training. And we start in a long hallway with all the doors closed so the puppy has not option but to return to you with the bumper or paint roller. Your puppy should be making less noise and it should be easier to get your puppy to go into the crate. We continue crate training by putting the puppy in the crate at intervals throughout the day broken up by time out of the crate playing inside the house or outside on a cable tie out. If you are using a very small crate for your puppy, she may already need a larger one. Bubba was moved to a inch crate one week after we brought her home. When Bubba is playing inside, we keep her confined to one room and make sure to try and watch her constantly so that we can catch her when she goes potty inside. Potty accidents where we catch her in the act will provide Bubba with the understanding of what she is doing wrong so that she can adjust her behavior. Housebreaking is a slow, painful process, but a very necessary one. Looking for more information on housebreaking? But we will also add a couple new ones. SIT command The SIT command is introduced in week two, but we are not expecting the puppy to be flawless with the command. We do this a few times a day. If your puppy is a bit too energetic, you may need to hold her bottom down and say SIT a few times. After all, who likes to wrestle a puppy to get a leash on or off? I am not looking for perfection at this point, only looking for her to stop pulling and walk somewhat next to me. This is an ongoing process and will come together better as the puppy gets older. If a chain collar is put on the puppy correctly, and this is a MUST, it will provide a tighten-release action. It is this action that teaches the puppy. If they pull, the collar tightens around their neck, if they back off and walk next to you, the collar releases. You can help your puppy understand this correction by using commands and praise. Time your praise and correction with the behaviors you want to see and the behaviors that you want to deter. Slowly, you will see your puppy walk closer to you. Remember, we are not looking for perfection at this point. The puppy is still way too young to do any of the commands perfectly. We just want her to stop pulling. She does not have to walk right next to you at HEEL at this point. If your puppy just pulls and pulls, she may need a bit more pressure to learn the lesson. Then praise her when you see a good behavior like she stops pulling or walks closer to you without pulling. Lastly, some puppies will try to grab and carry the leash while they walk. They also may start tugging on the leash. Neither of these behaviors is acceptable, so try your best to deter them. Letting your puppy get away with this now will result in a tougher correction later. In week two, we will expect a little more effort. Never use a HERE command if you are not in the position of being able to enforce the command. The puppy does not understand the command well, and this repeated use of the command without correction will confuse your puppy and dilute the command. Use the HERE command when your puppy is on a leash or Flexi-lead, and you can pull your puppy toward you with the command. Introducing your puppy to a kennel run If your puppy is going to live in a kennel run, now is the time to start introducing that run. Bubba will eventually move out to our kennel, so I started taking her to the kennel building and putting her in a run for a few minutes each day. This gives her the experience of being confined to a chain-link run, with other dogs around. I work hard to keep her quiet during her time in the kennel since I do not want a noisy dog later. Be sure and check the collar and make sure that it is not too tight. Socialization Socialization is key for raising a Labrador puppy to be a successful hunting partner or competition dog. But what exactly is socialization? Socialization is simply exposing your puppy to new things, new places, new people, new experiences. The more things and situations you expose your puppy to, the better your puppy will be equipped to adjust and learn in the future. In the first few weeks I like to get my puppy socialized with kids. My grandkids love to come see the new puppies, so they are a great asset for this step. I explain to the kids that they should not allow the puppy to jump on them or bite them and that they should not tug items with the puppy. Signs of a dominant dog include: When you open the door, he rushes past you to run outside before you exit Running away and not stopping when you call out his name Jumping up on you even if you order him to get down Taking over furniture and not moving out of the way when you want to sit down When being let off leash outside, running away quickly without listening to a verbal cue from you that he is allowed to explore When on leash for his daily walk, the Boxer walks ahead of you, pulling on the leash and essentially leading the way Jumping on or pestering guests, not listening to you to leave them alone Insistence on sleeping in your bed Only listening to command some of the time or not at all 4 Steps to Take for Your Boxer Dog to Listen to You This all boils down to needing to teach a Boxer why he should listen to you. He has no concept that you pay the rent, buy him his food and that you spend time reading articles here in an effort to take better care of him. He is not purposefully being defiant; he simply does not know why such a thing is even expected of him. So, what will automatically make a Boxer dog listen? As touched on above, canine instinct dictates that obedience is given to whomever he sees as his leader. Strong leaders are simply not ignored. Such a thing cannot happen in the canine world. Listening to a leader is an automatic response. And doing so actually creates a more content dog. When a dog takes on the Alpha role or if he sees his human as a weak leader, this puts a lot of stress and responsibility on that dog. He takes his place as Beta, listens well and all is right with the world. It is important to note that ensuring your proper place as leader can and should be done in a loving way. You will be a caring, kind and fair leader. Nothing about this is harsh and expecting your Boxer to listen to you is not only appropriate, it is the path to a balanced, happy household. The rules of getting a Boxer puppy or dog to listen are not that difficult; the element that many owners do have is consistency. Appearing to be wavering will be taken as a sign of weakness and self-doubt. This only works if everyone in the household is on board and if these rules are followed all of the time. Canines know that food equals survival. When humans talk about basic survival being food, clothing, shelter and fire, with dogs it is just food. If your Boxer is not listening to you, chances are that he has zero idea that it is you who provides his food. While other guidelines are helpful in getting a dog to listen and show obedience, without this one, it will be a failure. Food, beyond doubt, is the 1 element. It is recommended that all humans in the household take turns in feeding the Boxer his meals and snacks. If only one person takes charge of this, the Boxer may see just that person as his leader and will listen to him, but be disobedient to others. Follow the rules for any food that is given; both meals and snacks. Vary the time that you have him hold. For at least 1 meal of the day, make sure that your Boxer sees that you eat first. A dog only needs to see his human begin eating do not make him watch you eat the entire meal. You will want to prepare both your meal and his. You then place his bowl where he cannot reach it. Sit at the table. When your Boxer is looking at you, take several bites. Ignore any barking , jumping, begging or whining. The correlation we touched on earlier in regard to a Boxer rushing out of the house first and also being a dog that does not listen is crucial in understanding how to fix the obedience issue. Through the eyes of a canine, the house is his den. It is his safe place, one to relax with his pack and defend from outsiders. And there is one major rule in regard to the den: The leader of it has the privilege to enter it and exit it first. His Betas then follow him. How to fix this: Take charge of this by being the one to enter and exit first. It is recommended to: 1. Within a few feet of the door, command your Boxer to 'Sit'. While he is holding, attach his leash. Reaffirm the 'Sit' command by repeating it as you open the door. Close the door to block him from exiting and again order him to sit. For puppies that are being housebroken , certainly do not allow an accident to occur just to follow this training. But at all other times that you take your Boxer outside, do follow this. While it may seem very innocent to walk around your Boxer if he is in the hallway or other area that you need to pass by, allowing a dog to remain in place and stepping over or around him sends the wrong signal. It should be the dog that moves for the owner and not the other way around. And the Boxer should, on first command, listen to the order to move off of the sofa or at the very least, make room for his owner. If you allow a Boxer to secure dominance over any area of the house, this is essentially telling a dog that he is in a power position, and you — the subordinate- will accommodate him by troubling yourself to move around him or sit yourself on a difference piece of furniture. And as you can imagine, passing this sort of message to a dog will then lead to all sorts of hierarchy issues, including the one of being ignored and not being listened to. How to fix this: Again, this should all be done with love. Do not take no for an answer. If need be, attach his leash and physically lead him away. In time, with the other rules followed, once your Boxer sees that you are his leader, he will automatically make room for you as you approach, which is a clear sign of respect. So many people joke about a dog walking his owner when they see a dog running ahead on lead. And many owners assume that it is normal for a dog to walk ahead, sniffing and pulling on the leash. What does it really hurt? However, this is a huge missed opportunity to teach your Boxer that you deserve respect. However, you — as a leader that should be listened to and respected — should be in charge when walking. Many owners skip over any sort of heeling training, assuming that it is too difficult and too involved. Additional Tips for a Stubborn Boxer that Does Not Listen When followed with confidence and without fail, the above 4 steps will set proper hierarchy back to where it should be. This said, some Boxers will not go along with the change without at least giving it a bit of a fight. There may be a power struggle for several weeks until the dog finally gives in, accepts his Beta role and begins to listen. If there is indeed a lot of resistance, there are some other things to look at: 1. Spaying and neutering has many benefits including decreased risks for some cancers and of course prevention of an unplanned tie. You might be surprised just how often this happens. While there is some debate over this in regard to female dogs, most experts agree that it is helpful with males. Sleeping arrangements. For these reasons, we highly suggest never starting this to begin with. A Boxer should have his own sleeping area. This should be a high quality canine bed for proper support and be placed in a common area such as the living room, so that the Boxer is not isolated but has his own area to retreat to when feeling tired. Superior positioning. For this, you will not sit on the floor with your Boxer. If you are sitting on a chair or sofa, your Boxer will remain on the floor and by your feet is just fine. Maintaining Authority Once you have things under control and your Boxer is starting to listen to you, it is not the time to let up on how you handle these elements. Canines are always aware of the pecking order. As canines, they are constantly on alert to notice weakening spots in the system. Veterinarians, animal behavioral experts and professional trainers all agree on one thing: Dogs that are taught to be obedient tend to be happier and more relaxed. And that ensuring your Boxer always listens to you not only makes for a peaceful household, but can also keep him safe. All dogs have their own breed characteristics and traits that speak so loudly of that breed, but on the other hand there are certain behaviors all dogs have. The next question is: can dog behaviors that are sometimes not considered polite to humans be trained or are they just what you have to deal with owning a Boxer? All behaviors are trainable. We just need to find what works for your Boxer. Not So Polite Boxer Behaviors Boxers are a fun, loving, outgoing and high-spirited breed that have a lot of energy and affection to expel. That being said, some inappropriate dog behaviors can come from all this energy and desire for attention. The most common impolite behaviors I see with Boxers are excessive jumping, pawing and muzzle punching. I deal with this on a constant basis! Jumping Jumping is common for many dogs, especially energetic and excited dogs. Boxers kind of do this wiggle jump because they can barely contain their excitement. What do you do when you come home and your Boxer is wiggling and jumping all over the place? Keep tasty treats outside the door in a jar, grab a handful of them before you walk in and toss them on the floor when you enter the house. This distracts your dog for long enough for you to get in the house without being trampled as well as breaks the jumping routine and rewards your dog for keeping all four feet on the floor. Pawing and Muzzle Punching These two Boxer behaviors go hand-in-hand because your Boxer is usually doing them for the same reason: attention! As we all know, Boxers are usually very affectionate and can be attention hogs, which I love, but sometimes they become a little pushy about it. I have a great exercise that can help your Boxer build some self-control and teach him that patiently waiting for attention will get him the attention he desires. Begin in a quiet low distraction area. Place medium grade treats in your hand and make a closed fist to present to your dog. Ignore any pawing or muzzle punching from your dog. Once your dog stops pawing or muzzle punching, open your hand full of treats and use your other hand to take a treat to give to your dog. If your dog goes toward the baited hand hand with treats when you open it, simply close it and begin the dog training session again. Continue working on this exercise until you can open your baited hand and reward your dog with each piece of food one at a time, waiting three seconds in between each treat. Sometimes, you like the behaviors in moderation, which is why working on these exercises will help you gain a little more control in these situations. Unfortunately, too often people get boxers for their looks and become frustrated with some of the behavioral issues that are common in the breed- like their world renowned stubbornness! But despite their impressive looks, that has made them popular as guard dogs , boxers are actually very sensitive. They do not respond well to too heavy of a hand, anger, or physical discipline. But with a boxer, physical-focused discipline can become dangerous. Boxers are protective by nature and when handled too roughly, they can sometimes become aggressive towards their owner. In order to achieve the best results in your boxer, provide consistent, gentle discipline and never react to your dog with anger. If you feel that you are having a difficult time controlling your temper with your boxer, it is best to separate yourself from your dog for a time and give yourself time to calm down before you attempt training again. True to their name, boxers have a habit of jumping up and punching with their front feet. This is a breed characteristic that the vast majority of boxers are likely to display. While this behavior may look very cute in a puppy, as your dog gets older, it can become very problematic. A boxer of a year or two of age that has not been taught to keep all four feet on the ground can result in a rambunctious young dog that can accidentally hurt people or knock them over with their punching. Therefore, along with the usual obedience training that you will likely want to teach any powerful, large breed dog, boxers particularly benefit from being trained to have the self-control to resist the urge to box. It is a good idea to train your boxer a command for standing up and punching out with the front feet and a command for keeping their feet on the ground. If your boxer jumps up and boxes at you, your family, or your guests despite being told not to, do not use often recommended techniques like kneeing your boxer in the chest when they jump up. Instead, use a tether or leash to prevent your boxer from displaying the undesirable behavior. However, this is a dog that was bred to have a job to do , and they can occasionally get bored with training. It is not unusual for a boxer to challenge their owner either. Therefore, regular, consistent training is very important, especially for such a powerful breed. Set rules and stick to them. Make sure the entire family and anyone else who serves as a caretaker for your boxer also are very consistent in the rules. It is not as important what the rules are as that you stick to them. A boxer that is allowed to get away with things sometimes will quickly learn that they can try to challenge the rules and do things they may or may not be supposed to. Consistency from the time your boxer comes into your home is absolutely essential. If your boxer misbehaves by being overactive, refusing to obey a known command, etc, it is important that they not be allowed to get away with the undesirable behavior. As always, removing your attention is a great way to give your boxer an opportunity to calm down and stop the undesirable behavior and discipline your boxer. Socialize With People The average boxer is extremely good with their family. Boxers are especially known for being wonderful with children. They tend to be patient, tolerant, and protective of their family. On the other hand, when it comes to strangers, boxers are not necessarily as likely to get along well unless they are well-socialized from an early age. Boxers are naturally protective, and they often excel in attack work and as home and personal protection dogs. Introduce your boxer to new people frequently throughout their life. If your boxer shows aggression inappropriately, take your boxer out of the situation and calm them down by crating or tethering them. Boxers that show extreme aggression towards new people despite socialization will benefit from a certified trainer or animal behaviorist. Never punish a boxer for showing aggression by yelling at them, striking them, or handling them roughly. This kind of behavior is most likely to result in an escalation of the negative behavior since your boxer will learn that there really is something to be feared from the new person. Generally, the best way to get a boxer to accept new people is to give them lots of positive reinforcement like affection and plenty of treats when there are new people nearby. This may be especially useful for dogs that begin showing aggression despite regular socialization. Socialize With Other Animals A well-socialized boxer is typically tolerant of other dogs and animals. However, aggression may come out even in well-socialized boxers. Boxers may tend to be more likely to show aggression towards same-sex dogs, so when choosing a companion for your boxer or when picking out playmates for your pup, choosing dogs of the opposite gender is a good idea. Historically, boxers were bred to hunt big game like bear, wild boar, and bison. Boxers also were used for dog fighting until this activity was made illegal. They have also served as cattle dogs. This means that boxers may sometimes show prey drive towards large animals like livestock and aggression towards other dogs. Boxers are less likely to behave inappropriately with livestock or other dogs when they are socialized with them from a young age. However, aggression can come out even in well-socialized dogs. It is always best to socialize boxers with other animals to set them up for success in preventing prey drive from coming out and causing aggressive behavior. For boxers that do develop aggression towards other dogs or animals despite socialization, self-control training is extremely important. Your boxer needs to learn to be in the same area as other animals without showing aggression. Never punish your boxer for showing aggression towards other animals. Punishment may cause your boxer to repress their aggressive behavior, only to have it come out unexpectedly when you may not be able to control your dog. Punishment can also increase frustration, making animal aggression worse instead of better. Instead of punishing your boxer for aggression, take them out of the situation and slowly reintroduce them to it when they have calmed down. Reward your dog for calm behavior at a distance from the trigger and gradually move closer and closer to other dogs or animals, rewarding along and along, until your boxer can be calm in proximity to other dogs or animals. Not every boxer will be able to be trusted loose with other dogs or animals. This is a breed that may not end up doing well at dog parks or loose with livestock. Each boxer is an individual, so carefully observe your boxer as they get older to see what kind of instincts are likely to come out in them. What to do When Your Boxer Misbehaves Knowing how to discipline your boxer in any given circumstance can be a challenge. If they ignore your command, separate yourself from your boxer or tether them so they are unable to perform the behavior. Refusing to comply Boxers can easily get bored with repetitive training and are known to sometimes challenge their owners as well. If your boxer refuses to comply with your command, resist the urge to keep repeating the command or punish your boxer for misbehavior. Instead, give your boxer some time in a crate or on a tether with a chew toy before asking them to behave again. But make sure that the crate or tether are never seen as punishment and simply a break. Aggression towards people or other animals Remove your boxer from a situation in which they are showing inappropriate aggression. Slowly reintroduce them to the trigger, maintaining a substantial distance and rewarding them for calm behavior. Gradually increase the proximity to the trigger. For situations involving severe aggression, seek out the help of an animal behaviorist. Over-excitement Boxers tend to be very energetic dogs, and especially when they are young they may not seem to have the self-control to handle their own excitement levels. If your boxer behaves in an overly excited manner, crate or tether them until they are able to behave calmly. Using a flirt stick is a great way to help your over-excited boxer learn self-control. Testing boundaries It is normal for all young dogs to test their boundaries and see which commands are rock-solid and which they may be able to push. If they are, make sure your boxer is always supervised in these situations and firmly control their ability to misbehave in these ways by using a leash, baby gate, or some other control. Never allow your boxer to get away with inappropriate behavior. Instead, firmly but gently stop your boxer from performing the behavior and redirect them to something appropriate like a toy. Enjoy a Well-Behaved Boxer A well-behaved boxer is truly a joy to live with. It can take some time to train your boxer since they tend to be a bit late to mature. Of the three that were born, one of the pups proved to have an allergy friendly coat as well as a temperament that would make him a compatible guide dog. Little did he know that he was the beginning of a wonderful breed of dogs. Sultan was the first recognized Labradoodle. For over twenty years Labradoodles have made excellent service dogs as well as family pets. They have great personalities, are very smart and easily trained. They have also given severe allergy sufferers a new alternative, allowing many of them the ability to own and enjoy a dog of their own for the first time. Hybrid vigor is the phenomenon that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. A very good family pet, yet not always allergy friendly. Most first generation dogs shed to some degree. First generation backcross Labradoodles F1b are the result of breeding a first generation F1 Labradoodle back to a Poodle. This results in a much more allergy friendly coat. F1b Labradoodles are no-to-low shed dogs. Multi-Gen Labradoodles are the result of breeding a higher generation Labradoodle to another higher generation Labradoodle. Their coats can range from silky waves of fleece to a curly wool. Multi-Gen Labradoodles are very allergy friendly and consistent in terms of coat quality. They are the best bet for someone who suffers with dog related allergies. Multi-Gens are no-to-low shed dogs. Non-shedding and allergy friendly. Grooming is a must if kept natural. Fleece - Long fur which can range from curly locks to wavy. This coat type tends to be allergy friendly and no to low shed. Hair — coat tends to resemble that of a Labrador. Non-shedding to heavy shedding. Least allergy friendly of the coat types. One of the biggest pros of having a Labradoodle is that they are non or low shedding and generally more hypoallergenic than other breeds. That being said, a determining factor of this is coat type. As a trusted breeder of Labradoodles and other poodle mixes for the past eight years and having raised multiple litters of Labradoodles myself, I can tell you about some ways you can try to predict the kind of coat that your Labradoodle puppy will have. To determine the coat type of a Labradoodle puppy, one must look at a few aspects of the puppy. First, the puppy's muzzle or face should be looked at to see if there are curls, crimps, or waves. Another indicator of coat type is the texture of both the puppy and its parents' coats. Before we get further into discussing how to tell what coat type your puppy will have, let's talk about the different coat types. We will also talk about how genetics influence coat type and how you can choose a generation of Labradoodle to get the coat type that you are looking for. Types of Labradoodle Coats There are three main types of Labradoodle coats, ranging from curly to flat. These coats all have different pros and cons as well as different grooming needs. Let's talk about each coat type and what it means for your puppy. Wool The wool or curly coat is the coat that most closely resembles a poodle. It is called the wool coat because it looks like the curly, dense coat of a sheep. Wool coats require the most extensive grooming regimen. Wool-coated puppies will need to get haircuts every six weeks in addition to their daily brushing. Fleece A fleece coat is an in-between type of coat, making it the middle ground between a curly and a flat coat. This kind of coat is probably the most common in Labradoodles, across all generations. If you have a puppy with a fleece coat, you will need to pay close attention to the hair around its ears and collar when brushing them because it can easily get matted. Hair The hair coat most resembles the coat of a Labrador retriever. Labradoodles that have this kind of coat will probably shed the most, but that doesn't mean that they are any less hypoallergenic than the others. Recent studies have shown that it is not actually the dog hair, but dandruff that is the cause of most dog allergies. Flat-coated puppies will have fewer grooming needs than their wool or fleece counterparts, but will still need to be brushed out regularly. Although flat-coated doodles have the same temperament and characteristics as their siblings, they are oftentimes less desirable as a result of the texture of their coats. This area is usually where the hair starts to show the most curl. Often, puppies that grow to have curly or wavy coats have crimps or waves in these areas. If your Labradoodle puppy is flat coated, they may have a slight mustache or beard, but the hair will be straight, not curled or crimped. Another way to tell the type of coat of your Labradoodle puppy is to look at and feel the texture of their coat. Puppies are born with a softer and fluffier puppy coat that helps protect them and help them regulate their body temperature while they grow and mature. Although they will eventually lose this puppy coat and be left with a coarser coat, puppies that are flat-coated generally start out with a coarser and shorter puppy coat. Flat-coated puppy coats will also appear different in the fact that their coat looks like it has an undercoat with a longer more wispy top coat that resembles a wire coat. If you cannot tell what kind of coat your puppy will have from these indicators, you may want to take a look at its parents. This tactic won't work well if your puppy is an F1 Labradoodle that is a mix between a Poodle and Labrador Retriever because you won't have a good base of reference, so is probably best used if you have a different generation of Labradoodle. If your puppy's Labradoodle parent has a tighter, curlier coat, the chances are higher that your puppy will have a curly coat as well. All of these tactics are good ways to get an idea of what your puppy's coat may look like but can only be labeled as educated guesses as puppy coats may change after they lose their puppy coat. Why Does the Generation Matter? The generation of a Labradoodle puppy is a huge factor in the kind of coat they will have. If a puppy has a higher percentage of poodle DNA, it will have a curlier coat. If you can't get a look at your puppy or are looking for a certain type of coat before buying a Labradoodle puppy, the generation and genetics of the dog can help you get a good idea of what type of fur they will have. Labradoodle Generations Chart. This coat is preferred by many. It should be wavy and forming light loose spirals. The Fleece coat has a distinctly soft, loopy spirals it feels like no other dog coat. This is a thicker tight curl coat. A Wool Fleece blend is a distinctly nice unusual coat as well. Has a cute fluffy longer coat look. Regular brushing is recommended. Minimal to non-shedding. The Multi-gene Australian Labradoodle always has the ultimate coat. Due to many years of breeding and the uniqueness of the Australian doodle produces a usually textured coat. It should be silky-soft waves and or light loopy spirals very nice Fleece coat and Fleece wool blend. As your Labradoodle puppy develops their adult coat and out of their puppy coat at about 6 to 12 months. Doodle coat will start to thicken and mat, this is the time to start grooming. When the pup coat is changing to their adult coat Puppy may lose a little hair and the coat may become lighten or darken. A change in curl or wavy will happen as the coat matures. Do NOT shave puppy coat off! In addition, we have our GorgeousDoodle preferences and tips as well : When your Doodle is about 14 months old they will have their adult coat and then body and legs can be shaved with clippers if needed. We usually only try to use the shavers on the tummy and sanitary areas but scissors cut everywhere else. It is important is to know your groomer or have a groomer that is recommended. Ask to see photos of other Doodles they have groomed, etc. The best shampoos and conditioners are super important…Doodles have sensitive skin. It is always important to leave their coat longer on the head, face, and tail. It looks good if the tail is full and top of the head is full and ears are trimmed up. I always talk with the groomer and give them firm instructions. No shaving the face or ears or paws or tail. We groom our dogs ourselves. We sometimes leave the legs a little longer with poodles it is called leaving the pants on and or leave their paws and ankles with a bit longer coat. It can be fun to give them a whole new look with a little different cut. Buy wide-tooth combs and open wirer brush and the scissors with a round tip. It is a fun coat, that you can leave long and just carefully trim around faces. Take to a groomer and you can have a full groom cut down to an inch or two or whatever you want. It is a good idea in Summer season hot weather to give them a full short body and legs cut. We would love to see photos of before and after the grooming of your Doodle. Most Labradoodles love water and are pretty easy to bathe or take swimming. Bath and cream rinse after swimming. The coat is one of the unique features of this Breed and sets it apart from any other breeds. Australian Labradoodles have no body odor, they do not require constant bathing and brushing, which is great for all types of owners. Is highly possible that the non- fur fleece and wool textures coat of the Australian Labradoodle is less likely to cause any pet allergic reactions. Labradoodles will have some very low hair breakage loss. Just like humans can have low hair loss. But that is not shedding. Then there are some pups that appear like they have a wavy coat, but end up shedding, or a pup that looks wavy but ends up curly as an adult. The fleece coat is low to non shedding, depending on 1 or 2 furnishings; tends to look shaggier than wool and it hangs in silky, light, loose locks which flow and ripple when the dog moves. Some feel this is the ultimate labradoodle coat or teddy bear coat. Puppy coat is easy to care for, but during transition to the adult coat, it can become very high maintenance due to matting. The final adult coat may or may not be easy care after puppy transition has been completed. Mostly non-shedding, but some have been known to shed minimally. Should be fairly allergy friendly Should be no doggie odour. Typically seen in F1B labradoodles or second generation and multigen lines. There are different types of fleece coats as well, some fine or thick, some wavy, curly or straight. As a puppy this sometimes can be hard to differentiate between a fleece coat or a wool as an adult, but with DNA coat testing, this can be determined.
