Recognition from the American Kennel Club vs. You can also find more standards from international dog clubs, such as the International Canine Kennel Club. As such, the standards from these two kennel clubs play a major role in the agreed-upon differences between American Golden Retrievers and English Golden Retrievers. Neither club recognizes sub-types of dog breeds, so they both list the Golden Retriever as a breed but with differing standards. Beauty, Conformation, Temperament, Health We appreciate and strive for beauty and good conformation. The title of this paragraph has our priorities listed in reverse order. Health is our main priority, followed by temperament, conformation, and beauty. However, we focus on all of these qualities. It is our commitment to health as a first priority that has enabled us to now be in a position to have lines with truly good health. We currently own six dogs. Please read our page on Hip and Elbows to understand why hip testing done at over 2 years of age as recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America gives results that are more meaningful. MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Tara has also been invited to perform obedience at the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. Positive Reinforcement Training Only! Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. Most importantly, Karen and Jenna use the same positive techniques with our puppies that have been used to create an obedience champion. All Summer Brook puppies will have some degree of training, even those leaving us at 8 weeks. You must scroll down to see a few of the many videos on YouTube of our past puppies in training. We know better how to train heeling than to spell it! The video below demonstrates the training of each of the seven puppies in a past Piper litter. We accelerated the training for the seven puppies in the video. This degree of training is exceptional. However, it is not our norm for puppies at barely 9 weeks of age. This video exemplifies the training at weeks of age. Our Requirements We have more requirements than most. The biggest requirement that keeps us from being a match for most is that someone must have considerable time for the puppy. Even if you work from home, you must have considerable time to devote to a puppy. Financing Available The Beginning Stages of Your Bulldog Puppy Many adopters have questions about what their puppies are up to while they wait for them to grow. Variables such as temperature, air movement, and nutrient intake must be tightly controlled. Puppies are kept separate from their mother to ensure they are not laid on nor neglected. Bulldog puppies at this age, most often do not have their eyes open yet. Instead they rely on their sense of hearing to know where their mom is and the other littermates. Week 3 The third week of life is a big week as major, physical development and progress are made during this week. The baby bulldogs should begin cracking their eyes open and begin developing their new found eyesight. Increased visibility adds a small level of independence that is certainly appreciate. The young puppies are now able to locate their mother and nurse more consistently on their own. During this week, we most often make the decision to leave the litter with their mother permanently. Mom will take on the responsibility of not only nursing the puppies but also cleaning up after them. This also means we are able to get a full night of sleep! What do we look for in a good Bulldog mother? Bulldog mom has to have a genetically clean pedigree history. We make sure each bulldog line that we produce has the best chance to stay healthy and happy. Bulldog mom has to have a great personality. We demand that all the bulldogs we own are extremely confident and great with both children and other pets. Breeding bulldogs with great personalities is very important as many social traits are passed from the parents to the baby. Bulldog mom has to have a great maternal instinct. Because the babies are so vulnerable we try to select and keep female bulldogs that show endearing and caring traits towards their babies. Week 4 Week four is our walking week! While bulldog puppies do begin to walk earlier at times, typically during week four we begin to see some major walking. The new found mobility is a joy to watch but does present some different types of responsibility as our bulldog puppies certainly can get themselves into trouble! During this week, we will start to perform some basic socialization steps to ensure that they are prepared for their new homes. Next Week 5 The puppies are now able to run, chew, and yes, sometimes bite! With the physical progress there are certainly ample teaching opportunities to develop these little guys into well behaving bulldogs. During this time we continue to analyze each puppy socially and develop unique, social profiles of each bully. The puppies start to focus less on physical survival and devote much of their time to playing with their littermates. This is a great learning environment for the puppies! This mushy treat quickly becomes a favorite for the pups. A robust bulldog puppy can now weigh around 5 pounds. The puppies will also undergo their first round of vet checks to ensure they are developing physically sound bodies. Socially, we continue work with the puppies to ensure they are exposed to the many different environments of the new homes they will be going to all while balancing a high level of biosecurity to ensure they are not exposed to harmful diseases. Brewtus is very much a part of our family and has fit in well. He gets along great with our cat as well as other dogs he meets. He is very social with other adults and especially gentle with children. He has a great temperament and our vet said he was one of the healthiest bulldogs she has ever seen. Your care and knowledge of the breed was both inspiring and assuring that we were getting a great bulldog. Our vet told us yesterday that Stig is a beautiful bulldog. He has one of his own, but he asked me where we got him. He said he is great show quality! Thanks so much guys! We love him so much! The puppies are now old enough and confident enough in themselves to begin developing expectations. Being held and being fed are no longer special occasions rather they are rights to life that are demanded. We continue to provide the high level of care that we hold ourselves to while developing flexibility within each bulldog pup. Week 8 The theme for week 8 is adoption preparation. We will make a decision with our vet the age in which the bulldogs are able to be taken home. The primary variable within this decision is physical development. Most of our bulldogs will go home right around the end of week 8 all the way to week .It simply depends on the bulldog. Check out this video to see what an 8 week old bulldog looks like! Her coloring seems to be pretty rare. She is mainly fawn with a white underside and paws and the cutest white spot on the back of her neck. Trixie is almost 4 years old and she weighs in around 85 pounds. She is the biggest baby I have ever seen—she looks tough but is the most gentle, loving dog. She always wants to cuddle and needs to be with people ALL the time. My father, who has had a huge fear of dogs all his life, even fell completely in love with her. She loves when she sees me cooking her food—yes she is spoiled and gets home-cooked meals! Going for walks around the neighborhood every night is a must for her. My year-old son gets along wonderfully with Trixie and she is very good with him. Although Trixie doesn't really appreciate the whole dog costume thing we can sometimes get a hat on her. Trixie is a smart dog and I am so happy to have her as a part of our family. They require a lot of work but I am a work-at-home mom so it's not a problem. Rocky and Roxy are brother and sister.Baby Rocco is 2 years old. Honestly, I don't know what I would do without them. He lived for 9 years and was a great part of my life. I am a former American Gladiator and Doc used to hang out backstage. Everybody loved him! At well over 40 pounds 18 kg and still only 3.
