As the name suggests, the English bulldog originates from England. Traditionally bulldogs were used in the sport of bull-baiting, where the dog would chase a bull around town for entertainment purposes. This was a popular sport between the 12th and 13th century. Now English bulldogs make superb family pets. Their gentle nature and little need for exercise makes them one of the least maintenance dogs to have. Step 1: Start by drawing a circle. Your drawing is starting to look like a silhouette of a cute English bulldog. Step 6: Put in two eyes and a heart-shaped nose. The eyes are two beady oval shapes and the nose is an upside-down heart shape. Step 7: Sketch in a curvy looking triangle for the mouth. Step 8: Draw in a semi-circle for the top of the nose. Simple, short lines are a great way to achieve this effect. Step 9: Add a few more wrinkles lines above the nice. Keep the wrinkles on the face going with another semi-circle and rough lines. We even defined the eyes slightly to make them look a little sad. Step Draw two semi-circles for the ears. Step Define the front leg. Add an extra rough line to create the front leg of your dog. The more imperfect and wrinkly the line, the better for your English bulldog drawing. Step Draw a curve for the belly. English bulldogs are quite chubby looking dogs, so their belly is quite outwards, especially when sitting down. Step Sketch in the back leg. Remember this bulldog is sitting down, so roughly sketch a leg with a paw positioned horizontally across the belly: Step Add in some extra wrinkles. Step Draw in even more wrinkles. This time focus on the upper part of the face and the eyebrows. Define the overall face through light sketches of wrinkles in random places. Step Sketch in the grass. Step Outline your drawing with a dark pencil. At this point, you can also rub out any extra lines you drew earlier as reference points. Step Add in the finishing touches. Here's a profile example of a modern bulldog skull. They have very short snouts compared to other dogs. Notice how far forward the lower canine teeth are in comparison to the upper canines. Step 4. They are fat and wrinkly and they have giant heads and paws. They grow into these features as they get older, but not to the same extent as other dogs. Bulldogs always have big heads and lots of extra skin. To draw a bulldog, let's first lightly sketch some basic construction lines as a guide. Use a 2H or harder pencil so the lines are easy to erase later on. Draw a circle shape for the head and a warped oval shape for the body. The rear of the oval should be level with the shape of the head. Let's have the dog with its head turned directly towards us. First draw the eyes. They should be a little higher than the middle of your circle. The eyes are far apart from one another, but make sure that the pupils and iris's are perfectly round and looking straight at us. Leave a small dot of white on each pupil. Draw numerous creases and folds around each eye, especially in the middle of the two. Next, draw the nose directly beneath the eyes. The nose should be fairly wide. The nostril holes are thin oval shapes that have small slits protruding from the bottom of them and wrapping around either side of the nose. There is a small vertical slit on the front of the nose, and a longer vertical slit just below the nose. Now draw the large jowls falling down either side of the snout. They should hang well below the nose, aligning with the bottom of the circle guide of the head. The middle of the jowls curve upwards and connect to the slit below the nose, creating an upside-down V shape. The chin should appear fairly small because of all the excessive flesh hanging down around it. But be sure to draw a few rolls of flesh beneath the short neck while you're at it. Step .Let's draw the contours of the head and the ears. The ears are on the top of the head above the eyes. They fold over so that the tips face us. Draw some creases inside the inner ears. Add more detail to the head by drawing more wrinkles and folds. The forehead should have several short creases, and there should be a few long, curved folds around the neck area. Draw the front left leg next. It should be stepping forward and planted firmly on the ground. The top of the paw should align with the nose. The leg is short and fat, but it gets a little thinner near the pay. Be sure to draw small claws on the tips of the toes and a small pad behind the paw. Next, draw the shape of the body. There should be numerous vertical folds and wrinkles behind the head of the dog. The flesh should smooth out as it gets closer to the rear, which should be as high up as the head. The underside of the dog should have a smooth, slightly warped diagonal line. Now draw the left back leg which should also be planted firmly on the ground, but stretched back slightly. The upper half of the leg is significantly thicker than the lower half. We can now draw the legs on the right side of the body. The front leg should be off the ground slightly so that we can see some of the pads on the bottom of the paw. Be sure to draw the small dewclaw on the side of the front paw, as well as the small pad on the back of the leg. The rear leg should be on the ground, but it will appear higher than the left rear leg due to our perspective. It should also be further forward than the left. Draw the short, curly tail at the top of the rear. Is should just look like a fat U shape that has been smashed together. Some bulldogs have spots all over their body. Ours is going to have some large spots. The markings should be made with a fine tipped pencil. Flick your pencil along the page to make quick, short lines along the edges of the markings. The markings should look random and mold to the contours of the folds. The tip of the nose and mouth should have a large splotch that will be black out later on. We can now ink our image! Use either a brush and ink or Micron markers. Be patient and be careful not to erase any unneeded guide lines. When the ink has dried, erase the pencil marks with a kneaded eraser. You can add a greater sense of depth to the image by giving it some shadow and blacking out the markings on the front of the snout. Add shadow to the inner ears and to the upper portions of the right legs. Also shade alongside some of the larger creases of the fur. If you need to make corrections, you can use white ink or opaque white paint. And that's how you draw a bulldog! Very nice work!

Kibble and wet food are the most popular, but you do also have the option of raw or homemade meals. Puppy Kibble Great quality, high meat content kibble is my go-to for feeding larger puppy breeds. At the beginning of the day I measure out their daily food amount, then separate it into little pots. Some as meals, and the remainder to use throughout the day to reward good behavior or get off on the right foot with positive reinforcement. The FDA recently issued a notice alerting dog owners to a potential increased risk of a serious heart condition. This is called canine dilated cardiomyopathy DCM. The risk is in dogs eating foods that include peas, lentils, or potatoes instead of grains. The underlying cause of these cases is not clear, but the FDA note suggests that caution should be used in selecting foods with these ingredients for German Shepherds and other large dogs. Canned Dog Food For picky eaters canned food can be more appealing. It smells stronger, and debatably tastes nicer. These diets do not include cooked or otherwise processed foods. However, it may be more difficult to regulate a BARF diet to ensure a slow and steady growth rate in young puppies. Homemade Diets Research has shown that in the past, poorly balanced homemade diets have been harmful to German Shepherd puppies. There is now abundant information available to anyone who is willing and able to produce a safe and balanced diet. However, modern cases studies have shown that well-meaning owners may still over-feed or create an unbalanced diet. So, this is an area where you really can have too much of a good thing. As with commercial foods, homemade diets must be properly formulated for a large breed dog. Do not deviate from recommended recipes as provided by a veterinarian. If possible, preferably a vet with a board certification in veterinary nutrition. Recipes published in popular magazine and websites may not be nutritionally complete or suitable for a large breed puppy. Is My Puppy the Right Weight? You can also refer to German Shepherd puppy growth charts to see if you puppy is gaining weight and within the normal range. However, keep in mind that some dogs will be unusually small or large but still be perfectly healthy. Do not try to maximize growth rates as this can lead to health problems later. Ensure that you are familiar with how to assess the body condition of your puppy. The ribs and spine should be easy to feel but not simple to see. My Puppy Is Still Hungry If your puppy seems excessively hungry provide more frequent but smaller meals. Young puppies cannot tolerate going without food for extended periods. With older puppies you may wish to experiment with foods that help them feel more full, and provide low calories treats. Keeping a health puppy active and occupied will help prevent them from becoming overly focused on anticipating their next meal. Puppy Feeding What should I feed my puppy? Diet is extremely important in the growing months of a dog's life and their two important criteria that should be met in selecting food for your puppy. The diet should be nutritionally adequate for puppies. The diet should have physical qualities texture,abrasiveness that will help control plaque and maintain oral health. We recommend a premium dry food puppy formula only available from vets or pet shops. The brands we use are Blackhawk or Advance puppy. We recommend to give this to your puppy in the mornings. It can be left in the bowl however, please keep in a safe spot away from birds as they love puppy food. We do not use or recommend supermarket dry food as they contain mainly cereal and very little meat. Moist food is usually given at night along with their vitamins. We recommend pet meat and not supermarket human grade mince. Liver is truly a miracle food for dogs, contributing many minerals and vitamins that other foods cannot match. A small amount mixed with mince times a week is recommended and on the alternate days add a small amount of either heart, brains or kidneys approx. Puppy Beef mince, kennel mince or a mix are great. Chicken wings or necks can also be used. All of the above must be given uncooked. Your pup will also need bones times a week We recommend meaty lamb necks. Please do not give your pup canned foods they will cause very loose stools and puppies do dehydrate very quickly. Your pup deserves the best you can afford and fresh food is a lot cheaper than canned food. There are now many companies on line that will deliver your weekly food to your door fresh. We also recommend fresh vegetables. Spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, corn sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, carrots, mushrooms are very healthy for your pup. Please prepare them raw by grating your veges and adding this to your night time meal. One raw egg 4 - 5 times a week is also recommended. DO NOT feed your dog onions as they can be very toxic to a dog and can kill them. Feed your pup a wide variety of food. The only exercise allowed is play. Pups must spend most of their day outside in the fresh air on clean earth and grass in the sun with ample fresh water available. Give your pup heaps of raw meaty bones. Feed your pup mainly raw foods. Raise your pup with all the love you can give him. Vitamins; You will need to administer the following 2 items for at least 18 months but the fish oil has other qualities that will help them right throughout their life so you may want to continue with the fish oil. Dolomite Calcium Powder 2. Pernaease Powder Both of these need to be administered on a daily basis As your pup grows at a fairly fast rate he will need calcium and a range of vitamins and minerals. We use Dolomite Calcium Powder to help their bones grow strong and Pernaease Powder helps as a natural anti inflammatory. Garlic powder 1 tsp. Brown sugar or honey 6 tbs. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour, dry milk, garlic powder and sugar. Cut in meat drippings until mixture resembles corn meal. Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Cut dough into squares appropriate to your dog size. Prick each cookie with a fork. Bake 25 - 30 minutes. Remove from tray and cool on rack. Store in air tight container. Your dog will absouletely love these great bickkies! The best food for German Shepherd puppies in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to German Shepherd breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a German Shepherd puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. Before the four month mark, it is advised to include some dry food in their diet. You can do this in a few simple steps: Mix some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. German Shepherds are susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia, that can start in puppyhood. They will be very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. This is because, being a larger breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your German Shepherd puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. However, they can also be at risk of gastric dilatation or volvulus, or GDV. Certain dog breeds can be more susceptible to GDV; particularly deep chested breeds including German Shepherds. GDV can occur when a dog bloats a few hours after eating a meal. Though the exact causes of GDV are not known, grains and cereals are suspected to be contributors. The amount of food you give your German Shepherd is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult German Shepherds, between 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female German Shepherds, which tend to be about 8 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, and 1, per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your German Shepherd based on how calorically dense their food is. German Shepherds should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs who are at risk of GDV may benefit from exercise after eating, to aid with digestion. You should also try to give your German Shepherd a high quality food that is specially designed for larger or working breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. German Shepherds can be particularly susceptible to skin disease or allergies, including canine atopic dermatitis, bacterial skin infections, flea allergy dermatitis, forms of contact dermatitis, or scabies. If your dog develops a skin issue, it is often a sign that they may be suffering from a form of food sensitivity.
