Please consider that your lifestyle may change. They need love, attention and an opportunity to learn too. Are you familiar with the breed? If not, you may want to look into fostering with us before making a decision to adopt. Boxers are a highly affectionate breed and very energetic. Do you have the financial means to care for the dog? Annual food and medical cost can add up. Are you older and wanting to adopt a young energetic dog? Please think about more mature dogs that need homes. Everyone wants a young dog … if you are a mature human being, please consider more mature dogs that have been waiting for their forever homes for a while. Before you fill out this application, please read our Adoption Criteria. This is required reading, and it will answer many questions you may have. Dog must be an inside dog. It is OK to have an outside dog run with inside access. This is because Boxers must be protected from heat and cold. Dogs are family members and do not sleep in a garage or outside. If you expect that the new dog will not react when a child hits them, throw toys at them, takes away their toy or food, etc, then please do not adopt from us. You are not required to have a fenced yard. However, if you do not, you will need to take the dog out for a potty break at least 4 times a day, more if they do not feel well. Same goes for a home with a low fence. If you are looking to adopt a puppy, please be realistic. Any home where no one is home for more than six hours a day times a week will be rejected for puppies. We do not do female to female placements of bully breeds. That means Boxer, Bulldog, Pit bulls, etc. We will consider female to female adoption of dogs with extreme age and size difference. She is currently taking Prozac and Trazadone at the advice of a trainer who claimed it would help to keep her from panting in her crate. Shame on this vet who willy nilly dished out these drugs to a 13 month old dog, without asking why!! Bailey needs a committed home, with an understanding of the needs of an adolescent boxer. Perhaps the owner purchased the dog on impulse, not understanding the needs of a boxer. Sometimes, financial situations change, and families are not able to care for the dog anymore. We also take dogs that have been brought to shelters around New England. If a shelter reaches out for help, we do our best to find placement for the boxer in need. Lastly, we have a wonderful relationship with boxer rescue in Puerto Rico, and we work closely with them to bring boxers in need, from the island, to New England. All of our boxers are temperament tested and evaluated before coming into rescue. It should be noted that ALL dogs require a decompression period when going to a new home. Can I adopt a female dog if I already have a female dog? The short answer is no. Our experience in placing dogs, has shown us that placing two females together is oftentimes not the best long term situation. We receive many calls from owners needing to surrender their female boxers because there is fighting with another female dog in the house. Either way, the fighting is often brutal and bloody. We have adopted a policy to never place two female dogs in the same house. Are your boxers healthy? They are brought up to date on vaccines, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered unless too young or not medically able to be. Their vet records are provided upon adoption. Do I need to have a fenced in yard to adopt a boxer? We do not require a fenced in yard for all of our boxers. We look at each dog, individually, and based on the needs of that dog, we may require fencing. Please note that we do not consider an electric fence to be a proper method of containment and are not able place a dog in a home that uses electric fencing. Do you have a shelter where I can come meet the boxers? We are not a shelter and do not have a physical location where you can meet our adoptees. We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. But what about dogs? Are there any good arguments for litter box training your canine friend? A dog litter box? Or an artificial grass pad? So I rarely advise pet parents to skip this opportunity. That said, there are a few instances when using a dog litter box is preferable. Is it right for your dog? This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary. Close Instructions Wash and clean with soap and water. For indoor use. Extreme heat can cause pan to warp. Training your puppy Stage 1: Getting Off to a Good Start Create an enclosed small space where your puppy can be confined but still feel like part of the family. Make the space large enough for the litter pan to be at least 3 to 4 feet from the puppy's crate and water bowl. Fill the pan with litter or recycled paper litter to the fill line when the puppy is not there. This prevents him from associating it with the sound of kibble being put in his food bowl. Place a small amount of the puppy's urine or solid waste in the pan to help pet understand what the pan is used for. Don't scold; praise your puppy profusely and give him a treat when he is using the litter pan! Stage 2: Be in Control Set up a routine of feeding and exercise. Have fresh water available until a few hours before crating for the night. Feed your puppy at the same time each day, removing the bowl after 1 to 20 minutes. Keep your puppy on a leash while outside the pen area. You will keep accidents to a minimum when you have control over your puppy at all times until your puppy is fully trained. Stage 3: Build Good Habits Place the puppy in the pan regularly when you take your puppy out of the crate, after sleeping or exercising and at mealtimes. Schedule exercise with your puppy. Until your puppy is fully trained, encourage pet to eliminate in the pan before exercising. Using the phrase "puppy go here" when the puppy actually goes in the pan will build the association between the pan and the activity. Eventually, you will be able to use the phrase as a cue for your pet to go potty. After your puppy has used the pan a few times, fill the pan with litter to the fill line and place the usual material over it. After your puppy has become familiar with the smell of the litter, slowly begin to use increasingly smaller pieces of the other material, uncovering more of the litter every couple of days. Use a command or cue phrase such as "puppy go here" or "do your thing" before you start training to help him understand the association between the place and the purpose. When your puppy is used to the new area, put the litter pan-filled with grass or other material from the area-in the spot. When your puppy is comfortable with the ground material in the pan, replace it with litter or recycled paper litter. After the pet has been using the pan outside with the litter with complete reliability, start moving the litter-filled pan toward the house a little bit each day until you can bring it into the house.

There will be a noticeable, unpleasant odor, and the skin may seem red or inflamed. Using hydrocortisone-containing wipes can assist with this. Bring your Pug to the vet for a medicated bath that rinses topical steroid cream for short-term treatment if the problem is significant. As I mentioned above, the mother will remove the umbilical cord from her pup, by chewing through it. You should never remove puppies umbilical cord! After the removal, the puppy has a small umbilical cord stump on their belly for about a week, which is similar to human babies. Once it disappears, all that is left is a small, light-colored scar. A pugs belly button will be hard to see. For medium and short-haired dogs, you can see the scar where the umbilical cord was connected to the pup. The image above shows it is just above the base of the ribs. The human belly looks very different from a Pug puppy belly. As you can see from the image above, your puppies belly button is not as big and noticeable as that of a human. In fact, the scar is so small, that you may not even be able to feel it. An outie belly button on dogs is known as an umbilical hernia. This is usually due to genetic dispositions and is most commonly found in the following breeds; Basenji, Airedale Terrier, and Pekinese. If left untreated, it can prevent them from doing regular activities such as straining and barking. Other symptoms may include:. It is important to note that if you think that your Pug has bloat, and we will list the symptoms here, that you immediately bring your dog to the veterinarian. Time is of the essence and with without treatment bloat is often fatal. What This is: Bloat is a serious and sometimes fatal swelling of the stomach. If the stomach also twists, this is called gastric volvulus. The expansion and twisting cuts off vital blood supply to the spleen and splenic vessels which results in the dog going into shock. The event is extremely painful. Signs of Bloat with a Pug Dog: A puppy or dog may show one, some or all of these signs. While signs may appear right after eating or exercise, technically it may develop at any time. Vomiting, heaving, hacking - There may be repeated attempts to throw up that may or may not expel food or fluids. The dog may dry heave, make hacking noises or lean over as if he wants to vomit. This may be misinterpreted as coughing. A hunched posture - Due to the intense pain that a dog experiences and the internal swelling that is rapidly occurring, a Pug may hunch over, with his back curved. Though this condition is named after this symptom, a dog can have bloat without there being any noticeable changes to the stomach area. As it progresses - Again, a dog can enter the fatal phase within just minutes. Signs include trouble breathing, slowed heartbeat, weakness, and eventual collapse. What Causes Bloat: Type of breed. Most often this occurs with dogs that have deep yet narrow chests. Therefore, the Pug dog is not among those most prone to this. However, any dog of any breed including mixes can develop bloat. Eating too quickly - Food will be eaten very rapidly causing the dog to quickly swallow both food and air. Drinking too quickly - Though many people associate bloat with food, this can happen due to fast water ingestion as well. Height of bowl- There is some correlation between dogs that eat from raised bowls and higher incidence of bloat. Heavy exercise that occurs close to eating; most often right after eating. Other possible correlations: Happens to male slightly more often than females, being underweight, high stress, having a close relative the Pug's sire, dam or siblings that has had bloat, eating dry kibble that contains citric acid risk increases if that food is moistened , foods heavy in fat. Conscientious owners should be aware of what can develop with this breed in order to spot problems early. This gives the Pug better chance at successful treatment and recovery. You may read that offering OTC medication to relieve gas can be a first step, however in the case of actual GDS, this will not help and will only waste precious time. If you suspect bloat, you will want to bring your Pug to the veterinarian immediately. If it is after hours or the office is otherwise closed, do not wait until the next day. Locate the closet emergency animal hospital. Mortality Rate: A dog's chances of surviving decrease each minute that he is not receiving emergency treatment. The dog will be given an IV to help stabilize blood pressure and to administer medications to help combat shock and pain. To relieve pressure and help prevent rupturing, an esophageal tube will be inserted through the mouth or a trocar a long, thin needle will be inserted into the stomach. X-rays will be taken to confirm that there is volvulus the twisting of the stomach. Surgery is performed. With gastropexy, the stomach will be connected to the abdominal wall cavity which works significantly well to prevent this from reoccurring. Bed rest and very light meals will be required for 7 to 10 days afterward. How to Prevent Bloat: In general, those with Pugs do not need to be overly worried since this breed is not at high risk; however, it is wise to make some changes that will not only help prevent bloat but can also ease flatulence and other issues that are related to ingestion of food: Use a floor-level food bowl. If your Pug tends to eat very quickly, use a slow-feeder bowl this has projections that distribute the food, forcing a dog to slow down or place a stainless steel portion pacer in the bowl. If your Pug tends to gulp down water very quickly, offer water more often throughout the day so that he never becomes overly thirsty. While typical walks both before and after eating is just fine, do not encourage your Pug do perform any heavy exercise that involves running for up to 1 hour after eating. Since bloat tends to happen more often with dogs that are under stress, do all that you can to keep your home environment peaceful and calm. This will be beneficial to all Pugs at any rate. Feed your Pug a high quality food. Cheap foods often contain too many carbs which can then lead to gas and in some cases, worsen to bloat. Do not feed your Pug table scraps or any foods that may be high in fat; this includes deep-fried foods. In regard to manufactured foods, you'll want to steer clear of any that have fat among the top 4 ingredients will be listed as chicken fat, beef fat, etc. If your Pug puppy or dog has a close relative parents or sibling that has had bloat, this increases his chances; so be especially vigilant.
