Cheryl contacted me back saying that she has a litter due in late Dec. Well the puppies were born and on we got the best present, we got 1st pick of the pups! We picked the all black male boxer. We were so excited, starting putting names on a list and name after name we just couldn't pick one. We asked if we could come and meet our puppy and Cheryl welcomed us to come and meet our boy. The puppy was 2 weeks old when we went to meet our baby. Love at first sight to say the least, we chose the name "Dexter". I have to say that being able to go and meet the puppy was one of the best things we did. We ended up going to see Dexter twice and then at week 7 and one day we picked Dexter up. Wyatt even got his nub nipped by a litter mate and she made sure he was looked at and cared for. We picked Wyatt up to bring him home and Cheryl literally gave us everything we needed. At 18 weeks Wyatt is an active, healthy, playful, loving puppy who is great with people of all ages and other dogs. Thank you so much Cheryl! Tucson On an odd rainy day in February, I met up with Cheryl at the vet's office to meet Valentino, when I saw the puppies I could not decide which one so I adopted them both as love is not for sale. There were only 3 in their litter and Romeo was already reserved. Teddy and Valentino named so due to being born on Valentines Day are the love that we needed in our family. Let me tell you, sometimes they are very mischievous, rambunctious and can be down right stubborn. With that being said, I would not trade them for the world. Valentino is the leader, he has gotten into the sink and stole a defrosting London Broil. How did he get into the sink? Maybe he stood on Teddy's back. I can imagine them doing this, they are THAT intelligent. Well dinner was a little late but I was more concerned about his sensitive stomach. Teddy loves being on my white Italian leather sofa, he loves it so much that he smelled something probably crumbs and tore a hole right into the shoulder of it. I spent a Saturday sewing it up, while arguing with Teddy. He has claimed this sofa as his own. This is the love that I speak of. No matter what they get into, just one look at those sad eyes and I am a big bag of mush. They are the cleanest babies I have ever seen. They love to play in the mud and I let them! They are my babies. They are so smart, I lock them out of the doggie door and they will clean themselves, when finished they knock on the door. They loves kids! They use to jump on them but I have trained them that babies cry. My wife and I have be married 60 years, and we had boxer dogs until six years ago, when we lost out last boxer at sixteen years ago of natural causes. I have had a Boxer really my entire life. Her birthday just passed. If you really want to have a family dog that comforts, protects and is adorable, get a Boxer. I greatly recommend this breed to you and your family. No other breed I trust more with children then the boxer. We love Our Duke. They have huge personalities and with training can be quite obedient. Mine is very protective and takes a couple of minutes to get used to new people. However, she is great with children and very patient with them. They have a lot of energy and would be a great fit for someone with an active lifestyle that has time to wear them out. Their size is perfect as well. They are big enough to be intimating as far as protection goes, and small enough to travel with and meet weight restriction for certain living situations. He was very hyper as a puppy and required a lot of exercise, as all boxers do. As he got older, he calmed down but when I wanted to play or go for a walk, he'd get up for me. They're extremely loyal and are great with kids once they have grown out of their main puppy stage. Even when they're old, they're like big babies. Not a lot of grooming is required other than their nails and face wrinkles along with other normal grooming requirements. I do not recommend getting a boxer if you won't give your companion a lot of attention and if they don't have enough room to run around. He lived 10 years and died of lung cancer. He was raised in a no smoking house and ate life abundance dog food his whole life. He was my best friend, loyal, sociable and very obedient. He was high energy until he died. He was confident and was not shy. Our guests were his guests. He was a blessing to our home. She was the most even tempered, kid friendly dog I have ever met. Even though she could be skittish, she never once nipped or was aggressive toward humans or other dogs, and play-fought with puppies. She was friendly toward every guest we ever had and loved to play with tennis balls. My mother bought Roxann after my father died. They are fantastic with children and very protective of their people. Sweet, loving personalities. Boxers are as good as it gets. We took her to the vet on 3 15 .She is perfect. Ruth and her husband have a friend that will drive your puppy to you. And believe me it was great. I will be looking for another boxer next year I will call them first. Other than. Being 4 pounds under weight which the vet is not concerned about she is perfect thank you for our new addition to the family. Thev are. Sweet, smart, beautiful, loving, protective, funny, did I mention living pups ever!!! The 2 we have now are pretty dry mouthed, but.They have a not unwarranted rep for stinky flatulence,however, ours have been on boxer breed specific food since we got them as babes and that seems to make a huge difference from the ones I grew up with. They are big, lovey lap dogs.My girl, Trixee, likes to sit on my shoulder when I'm propped up in bed watching tv at night awww. They love people and often wan t to greet everyone by jumping up on them. I've found this to be a hard thing to teach them not to do, but you just need to train them to sit before anyone can say hello. Anyone familiar with the breed will say let them jump, I know how exuberant they are and it's ok? So you must be watchful for this with small children, as they really love kids. If I'm watching a video of my grandaughter on my phone, Pip and Trixee both start looking for her. They love babies and are very gentle and protective of them. He died suddenly of a heart attack at our feet while sleeping. He was our 3rd boxer and I wouldn't get another breed for all the money in the world. They were great with our two boys growing up and now great with our grandchiidren. Our other boxers lived to be between 11 and 12 and even though their life expectancy is not as long as smaller dogs this breed gives you so much love and big wet kisses I cant describe the joy. The only issue is that they are so loveable but so big they love to jump up on people and this is something that you need to teach them as puppies. I cant wait to go on Saturday to pick up our fourth boxer. I feel guilty getting one so soon after Baxter just passed on Saturday suddenly but our hearts have been ripped apart and I am sure that little Buck will help us heal faster. Goofy, personable, people pleaser so very easy to train as long as you establish dominance, awesome with kids and all kinds of animals. He is VERY energetic but loves his naps. He does require quite a bit of patience, especially in the beginning. He is completely harmless. Even though he is not exactly a small breed, he is convinced he is a lap dog. I never have to worry about guests or kids coming over or even coming up to him while on a walk. He loves all people, dogs as well. He doesn't do too well with separation. He can get bored easily, and with all of that energy make sure you take your boxers for walks and supply him with plenty of toys because he can get a bit destructive in the house if he isn't entertained enough. Although in the beginning it was a little tough, he is obedient and well trained now. I would recommend this breed to anyone with a little patience, and a lot of love to give. What I love most about them is they stay puppy-like for a very long time. But they are stubborn and they do like to jump, they require good training, a lot of exercise and attention. For a first-time buyer they might not be the best fit. I have had 3 Boxers and two of them did have cancer. Boxers are prone to cancer. But I did put them both through radiation and they both lived another 5 years cancer free! Even though they are prone to health issues and their longevity isn't what us Boxer lovers would want, their personality makes it all worth while and I wouldn't get any other breed! He is the most amazing dog, such a great personality and so lovable. Tyson truly brings joy to everyone he meets. Boxers are awesome and charasmatic dogs and I would reccomend anyone to purchase or adopt one if you want a little light in your life. I've always had a special love for boxers, it was love at first sight with Baxter. He peed on my shoe while looking up at me, it was all over, I knew he was the one, he had melted my heart. Baxter was very ill since he was 6 weeks old when I brought him home from the breeders house. Each time we took Baxter in for treatments; we were informed of new information on his medical condition that took a turn. The x-rays showed he had a heart condition on top of him already being sick. Baxter was taken to an cardiologist Blue Pearl where further tests were done. Echocardiogram, Ultrasound of his heart, Doppler. The Diagnosis was gloom, the left side of his heart was enlarged with a hole that may never close. Baxter's health continued getting worse, he needed to be taken to multiple vets and specialty hospitals for his health conditions. Where extensive testing he was diagnosed with pancreatitis, an autoimmune disorder, his kidney and liver started to be affected at this time. I was so devastated I was going to lose Baxter. Baxter had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks. The best hospital I will always recommend them to anyone. They saved his life. He was neutered at the age 14 months old. Consider the German Shepherd Husky mix. Also known by the portmanteau Gerberian Shepsky, these unique designer dogs combine the very best traits of both beloved dog breeds. While they may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, these dogs are quite popular among dog owners. However, you can learn more about their history by taking a look at their purebred parents. German Shepherd dogs, also known as GSDs, are technically classified as a purebred. However, the breed we know today was a direct result of careful crossbreeding, too! His goal was to create the perfect working dog. After finding what he believed to be the perfect specimen, he went to work standardizing the breed and establishing the Society for German Shepherd Dogs. They were then used by shepherds as herding dogs. Siberian Huskies have a history that dates back much farther. They originated in Northeast Asia, which is now modern-day Siberia. They lived in the Chucki Peninsula several thousand years ago. The dogs played a pivotal role in the lives of the Chucki people. Humans trained them to guard their camps and pull sleds. There were also records of these dogs being companions. Today, the breed is still used for sled-pulling. However, these dogs have reached far beyond Siberia and can be found all over the world. Even those that come from the same litter can look drastically different from one another and take on unique personality traits. There are no breed standards to follow. Thus, you never really know what kind of Gerberian Shepsky puppy you are going to get. While you can obviously gauge temperament and appearance by looking at the parent dogs, some genes are stronger than others. As a result, some puppies may look more like a German Shepherd while others lean more toward Siberian Huskies. As the designer breed becomes more popular, some of those differences will start to even out. This will start to happen as breeders start using two Gerberian Shepsky dogs to continue the lineage. Shepskys have a wonderful personality. They are bold, sophisticated, and fiercely loyal. Both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies have a bad rep when it comes to temperament. Intelligence and Training That intelligence can prove to be a bit of a challenge when training through. Gerberian Shepskys can be too smart for their own good sometimes. They will pick up commands well, but they are very stubborn and free-thinking. Many dog lovers will tell you about instances where their pups took their sweet time or tested their limits. Training can be a challenge in the early stages. This is especially true during puppyhood. Your young pup will test their boundaries as they are learning. Just stick with it and use positive reinforcement. These dogs respond best when some kind of reward is involved. Never use negative disciplinary measures or hitting. The goal is to create mutual respect while establishing yourself as the pack leader. Hitting or yelling at your dog during obedience training will only create a negative image of yourself with the dog. This can lead to severe behavioral problems and even more stubbornness. Their exact physical characteristics will vary from dog to dog. As we mentioned earlier, their looks will depend entirely on their parent genes. That said, there are some basic characteristics you can expect. Size, Weight, and Stature These are large dogs that can weigh upwards of 80 pounds when fully grown. In terms of height, most will be around 25 inches tall at the withers. This is the point between their shoulder blades. You may encounter small dogs as well. Females tend to be slightly lighter and shorter than males as well. They usually tip the scales at 60 pounds and only get to be about 22 inches tall. German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are renowned the world over for their beauty. Combining the traits of both parents creates a truly stunning dog. Shepskies are lean and have defined muscles. The head and face are where you can really start to see the parent breed characteristics. Both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies have perky triangular ears. On a Shepsky, the ears are noticeably large. This comes from the German Shepherd parent. They have triangular heads and relatively long snouts with very strong jaws. Unique eye colors are highly sought-after among dog owners. Gerberian Shepskies can have a few different colors. Bright blue eyes are pretty common. However, you can also find unique green eyes or muted hazel eyes, too. Coat and Color The coat of a Siberian Shepherd is short but thick. They have a double coat of fur like the Siberian Husky. The undercoat is dense and thick. The undercoat keeps them warm in the frigid temperatures of winter and keeps them cool in the blazing sun. These dogs can take on that iconic black and tan color pattern as German Shepherds or the familiar gray and white hues of a Siberian Husky. Most often, they will have a nice combination of tan, gray, and white. Life Expectancy Because they are classified as large dogs, Shepskys have a shorter lifespan than smaller canines. They typically live to be between 10 and 13 years old. Of course, several factors can affect their life expectancy. Health issues, poor diet, and not enough physical activity can shorten their lives by quite a bit. On the other hand, some dogs have been known to live past 13 years with optimal care. No dog is immune to health problems. That includes the Gerberian Shepsky. These dogs can suffer from common ailments that their parent breeds do. Here are some issues you should look out for. Essentially, dysplasia is a health problem that affects the joints. The joints can become deformed, which limits movement. It most commonly affects the hips, though it can also be seen in the elbows and legs. Dysplasia can be a debilitating condition. Luckily, many breeders can screen for the problem early on. Many reputable breeders work hard to selectively breed dogs and minimize the risks of dysplasia. Unfortunately, it can still affect these dogs. There are a few different ways to treat dysplasia. Puppies can undergo surgery to correct issues. However, older dogs may not be so lucky. Vets will often prescribe medications to alleviate pain rather than resort to risky surgeries. Your pup may eventually go blind. Cataracts can be treated with surgery. However, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which is caused by tissue degeneration, has no established treatment. Dietary Needs German Shepherd Husky mixes are very athletic and energetic dogs. Thus, they require high-quality foods to support their health. How much you should feed your dog depends entirely on their weight and activity level. A good starting point is to provide about 30 calories per pound of body weight. You will need to adjust their daily caloric intake based on their fitness levels and activity. Highly active dogs could require upwards of 2, calories every day! Meanwhile, older dogs and those that prefer to lounge around will only need 1, calories at most. These days, the dog food market is flooded with food options. At the very least, your chosen food should have 22 percent protein. However, we always recommend going higher than that. More protein is simply more fuel for the muscles! Stick with good sources like beef, chicken, and fish. The protein ingredient should be easily identified. Steer clear of any mystery meats or byproducts. Those will only do more harm than good. Carbohydrates provide energy throughout the day. Like protein, there are good sources of carbohydrates and bad sources. Bad sources include cheap fillers like corn, wheat, or soy. A better option would be complex carbs like sweet potatoes or peas. As for fats, a balanced diet will consist of 10 to 15 percent fat. Natural animal fat from the protein source is a good option. Avoid any unnecessary added fats unless it comes in the form of fish or flaxseed oil. Those minerals are essential for proper bone development. It has some of the highest protein content on the market, which is perfect for an active dog like the Shepsky. In total, the recipe is made up of 37 percent protein. It primarily comes from chicken. The cool thing about this particular recipe is that it has chunks of pure freeze-dried chicken that your pooch will love. Exercise Requirements Plenty of exercise is crucial for Gerberian Shepskies. They need approximately minutes of physical activity each and every day to stay healthy. You must take them on long walks. If you neglect to take your dog out or provide them with opportunities to exercise, you will experience behavioral problems. This requirement may be tough for first-time dog owners. In addition, all dogs have allergens, these are microscopic dander elements. The Poodle, and other dog breeds such as Schnauzers shed from their skin approximately every 21 days, thus greatly reducing the amount of allergens that could trigger an allergic reaction. However, as of now, it is thought that there are certain changes that take place in the dog's skin because of the temperature changes that occur when the fur is gone or very thin. The cure for matting is to work the mat out with a proper grooming tool and brush the dog properly or more often going forward to avoid the formation of new mats. Matting can become severe if not addressed early on, and if matting becomes too serious, the only option is to cut the mass of hair off the poodle entirely or shave it down to the skin in the area where the mat is located. Obviously, for show coats, this can be extremely detrimental. The best preventative to avoid mats is to set up a strict and regular grooming schedule for your poodle. As long as a poodle is brushed regularly, their coats are not that much more difficult to manage than many other breeds of dog. Once a puppy is used to the process of being brushed, it will be much easier to train the poodle to stand still, and the process of brushing becomes a much quicker and more enjoyable process. The easiest way to regularly brush a poodle is to train it to stand and stay on a table. Training dogs to give a paw readily can be helpful for simplifying this process, as many dogs are naturally reluctant to let anyone handle their feet. Teaching the poodle to respond to simple positioning commands can be very useful in accomplishing this. The more careful you are in grooming the dog, the more trust you will build up and the less reluctant the dog will be to get brushed. As you work, spray each section with a conditioning spray to reduce potential tangles. Even if you do not plan on doing your own major grooming there are basic grooming tips you will want to implement weekly, perhaps even daily. Remember, Poodles are born to groom. They love all the attention and this is a wonderful bonding time for both of you. This will be good practice for later on — for both of you! Yes, haircuts are essential for Poodles. Their thick, long, curly coats are prone to tangling and trapping debris. When will my Poodle puppy need haircuts? Then, at around four months old, they will shed their puppy coats and start to grow out their rougher adult coats. Frequency As a general rule, Poodles should have their coats clipped every weeks once their adult coats grow out, whatever your desired length. This is because they grow so quickly and can become matted just as fast! What equipment should I use? There are three main types of dog grooming scissors; straight scissors, curved scissors, and thinning shears, and they all perform slightly differently. Straight grooming scissors are a multi-task tool, they have straight blades for general, basic grooming, creating straight lines in the coat, and adding the finishing touches to haircuts. Curved dog grooming shear has a curved blade that can be used to fine-tune and shape specific areas of the coat, such as the paws and hindquarters. Thinning shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other, and there are also double thinners that have teeth on both blades. They are designed to remove lots of hair in even sections for a natural finish, and they can also be used to blend out the harsh lines from clippers and texturize the coat. Or, if you just need something for the occasional touch-up between visits to the groomer, a simple pair of electrical motor clippers will do just fine. Electric motor clippers are also good for keeping short coats short. You should also be aware of the types of blades that come with clippers. The higher the number of the blade, the more hair that it will remove. Or, you can get guards that fit a single blade to customize the length, which is a lot more convenient. Start by showing them the equipment and getting them used to the sight and sound of it before you cut any hair. Reward them just for being around it and then try cutting a small section of hair. If they react well, reward them again, and then do another section. Keep rewarding them as you go and again after the haircut is finished. Do it in a well-lit, comfortable part of the home that your pup can stand up in. Once you get them into a routine — keep it up! Work your way down the legs first, then from the neck to the hindquarters, or vice versa, and then the tail. Take care with the feet, underside, and head, shielding their eyes from falling fur. Use long strokes and go from the neck down to the back legs. How to deal with grooming anxiety If your pup is afraid of the scissors or clippers, take it really slowly and try to make it an enjoyable experience. You can do this by breaking up the haircut into smaller sessions to make it less stressful and taking breaks in between each one. Give your dog lots of praise and a reward every time you take a break and ask another family member to comfort them during the haircut. You can start brushing your Poodle from any age. To brush them, simply go in the direction of hair growth using short strokes. Hold the fur at the base with your free hand to remove knots, and use a mat remover for any stubborn mats. Bathing a Poodle puppy As for bathing, you should give your Poodle pup their first proper bath at months old to help them shed their puppy coat, unless they get seriously dirty before that. However, you can give your pup a bath any time after weeks of age to get them used to the sensation, but avoid overbathing them, as this will strip the fur of its natural oils and make it dry and brittle.
