Get a muffin tin or something that can fit a tennis ball into each hole. Then your Labradoodle should figure out how to get to some treats by removing all the tennis balls. The Cup Game This is another good game to play with your dog, but be aware that it does require some brainpower. And while you can increase the difficulty of the game, your Labradoodle might never quite grasp it, so you might have to keep it simple. Take two cups and put them in front of your Labradoodle. Then put a treat under one of the cups. In the beginning, you should give them the treat anyway, no matter what cup they choose. Now show your Labradoodle both hands. When they nudge at or show interest in one hand, show them that hand. Your Labradoodle will in time begin to understand the concept of this game, and they will keep on guessing till they get the right one. This trick is quite a bit easier than the cup game, so if just have time for a few quick and easy games, this is a perfect fit. Red Light, Green Light If you have a Labradoodle that struggles a bit with learning when to be calm and when to be excited, this is a great game. But, if your Labradoodle is extremely excitable then you will have to be a bit more patient with them. Before starting with this game, you will have to make sure you have a command for when your Labradoodle should lie down. Once your dog has mastered your command you should take them outside. It may take your Labradoodle a while to lay down the first few times you try this, but when they finally do lay down, give them a treat and a lot of attention. When your dog starts to understand this game better, you can up the speed. And finally, as your dog begins to understand this game better, slow down with the treats so they eventually will play the game for fun, and not because they get a reward. This is a game that is best played outdoors, but if you have enough room to spare inside your home, it is also a great game for the indoors. Big or Small This is another fantastic and simple game that can also teach your dog a completely new trick. Take a handful of kibble and hold it in one hand, and then take a single piece in your other hand. If your Labradoodles try to go for the bigger pile, they are allowed to eat them. But if your dog goes for the smaller pile close your hands and do it over again. When they finally understand both words, you can really start to play this game with them. But when they finally understand exactly what the goal of this game is, it will really test their brain. To get the best results with ring stacking, you should consider using clicker training. I prefer wooden, dye-free ones to be the best bet. Then, use the clicker, or something similar, and give your dog a treat when they pick up the ring. For the first few times, you might have to help guide the ring onto the stick. And when the ring does get onto the stick, click once and give your dog another treat. And if your dog is able to do that, place the stick in a different room than the rings. As long as you remember to be patient and take it slowly with them. And finally, they will be able to understand exactly how to play this game. Instead of you having to constantly pick up all of their scattered toys, this game will make them pick up their toys and put them away all on by themselves! The way you do this is by giving them an item to hold onto. If your Labradoodle drops the toy, you can give them a treat. They are very inexpensive they can even be found in most dollar stores and they are extremely durable. The point is to have a nice selection of toys to keep them entertained and out of trouble. Make sure that their toys do not have little parts they could chew off that could get stuck in their throats. Dog shampoo — There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes and the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you do go with a dog shampoo choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. In addition to having several good chew toys, which are great for their teeth, you should apply toothpaste to their teeth and gums on a weekly basis. You will notice that it said apply and not brush. Doggie toothpaste has those enzymes. Just put some paste on your finger or a brush and rub it on the teeth and gums. We highly recommend using the kind that has a flat blade on the end of the raking tool versus the kind that has prongs. What we find works best for us is to use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that is lined with a durable trash bag. The lid keeps foul odors trapped inside. Until our dogs are potty trained, we use old, soft towels and blankets for their bedding, which are very easy to launder. Though it is not a necessity, our dogs love their over-sized pillows and they spend a lot of time sleeping and lounging around on them. We have one that we bought at Petsmart that is 25 inches tall made of durable plastic which is collapsible, fairly light, and easy to set up. Because it is is transportable unlike a laundry room , we like to set it up in our main room not on carpet where they can see all that is going on around them and we can see them. You can find cute accessories and outfits at pet stores, and there are lots of options on line. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain, nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. Some people who have dogs with dark toenails cut them once every week or two so that they only have to trim off a little, avoiding any fear of cutting into the quick. Have More Questions? Its Poodle parent is behind only the Border Collie in intelligence, and you can expect the same from your Ttoodle. We recommend holding short training sessions at the same time each day to get your dog into a routine, which will help it stay focused and to learn quicker. The bad news is that it still sheds quite a bit, so you will need to brush it frequently to keep the fur off your furniture and to keep the dog looking its best. We recommend brushing every three or four days, more during the fall and spring shedding seasons. Titles are important in the dog world. Doodles, TToodles and other cross bred dogs cannot be registered with the AKC and the American Kennel Club is the primary registration organization in the American dog world. The same is true in England and other countries around the world. Only pure bred dogs of a registered breed can be registered. I am extremely proud to be an AKC Breeder of Merit and pride myself on both the genetic quality and conformation to the Tibetan Terrier breed standard of my foundation stud, dam and all of the TTs in my breeding program. There are no mixed breed dogs in AKC sanctioned conformation dog shows. Kensington Tibetan Terriers is committed to protecting the Tibetan Terrier breed standard through careful selection of a minimum of second generation breeding stock AND the stamp of titled approval from the American Kennel Club. The quality of the offspring is rarely better than the quality of the parents. This is why responsible breeders seek sires and dams to improve upon the flaws in their breeding stock. This is the goal for which all responsible breeders strive: to protect and improve the quality of the dogs in our chosen breeds. Genetic management is critical, if we are to maintain and improve the quality of our dogs. Genetic testing confirms whether your breeding stock carries the mutations for which each breed is known to potentially have. When you breed dogs of different registered breeds, you DOUBLE the potential for mutant genetic and physiological conditions for which you must test. Doodle breeders should be performing the genetic testing and registering the results on the parents AND on the offspring, for the two breeds being combined. But what have you truly got? A great big question mark, when it comes to genetic mutations that are linked to breed-specific physiological issues. Not all breeders choose to be on the Breeder Referral List. I choose not to be on the Breeder Referral List, because there is much more demand for my puppies than there are available puppies, and I see no reason to stimulate demand for something that is not available. Forever families already choose to wait months for a Kensington Tibetan Terrier puppy. The idea that someone could improve the quality of a registered breed by breeding a member of that breed to a member of a different breed holds no arguable merit. I suggest this, because there is no governing body over ANY of these cross bred combinations. And as with any profession, members of that profession CHOOSE to be overseen by their National organizations and apply for membership and proudly display that membership certificate for all to see, especially to potential clients. There are no membership organizations for breeders of cross bred dogs. And you will find cross bred puppies available from backyard breeders, because no registrations are required and no genetic testing, either. Breeders of cross bred dogs are not held accountable to any standards by any entity. All registered and many international Champions. Why even bother on trying to improve upon the Poodle? You have color and size options already available. Just ask Wendell Sammett. And the Labrador Retriever? It has remained the top breed in the United States, with being the 26th year in a row. Clearly, this breed has an extensive and loyal following. If, however, you are committed to seeking a Noodle, a Doodle or some other Designer Dog of the Day, do your own research. Visit the breeder. Be sure the dogs are being raised respectfully and in clean conditions. ASK to see the genetic testing histories on both sire and dam. ASK which ailments plague the sire and dam — and talk to a groomer, before you make your final decision. Groomers have a wealth of experience earned by working with many, many breeds and many cross bred dogs. Their opinions are valid. Do your due diligence. I would rather see forever homes welcome a dog or puppy from a national breed rescue program, first — and from a local animal shelter, second. Please support your local animal shelter and rescue a dog in need.
