Start by establishing firm boundaries The first step to stopping your puppy from biting or mouthing you is to set up firm boundaries for your puppy. You can set these up for not only biting but for all dominance behaviors. So, what is a boundary? Well, here are some examples. Some people we have worked with are okay with their puppy mouthing their hand as long as there is no tooth pressure. If you feel the same way, then make that a boundary. But if there is any tooth pressure, a swift and consistent correction will follow. This boundary is stronger and does not give the dog any room for confusion. In fact, they often will understand what your boundaries are but will test that standard against everyone else in the family. Each person needs to set and enforce boundaries. React with firm consistent corrections After you establish the boundary, you now need to react every time your puppy or dog crosses that boundary. Each and every time! There can be no room for confusion. Your corrections must be swift and consistent. Not all dogs react to the same level of pressure. For some dogs, this squeeze and strong words will be all it takes to stop the behavior. Especially if you are consistent in your correction. But some dogs have a stronger or more challenging personality. This will give your puppy a taste of his own medicine since his puppy teeth are sharp and will pinch into his lips or flews. What if the next person that dog bites is a child? Would you be able to live with that? A dog that is allowed to continue harming humans is only one bite away from having to be put down. It may sound harsh, but it is the sad truth. Some people may argue that the dog is unable to understand what they are doing is wrong. This is not based on reality. Dogs are very smart. They can learn to do amazing things and become incredible hunting partners and family companions. But they rarely achieve this potential without an owner who cares enough to set boundaries and enforce them. He walks great on a loose chain, and he sits in this position until release by another command. He does well in the down command but is still a bit stubborn. I also have been training him to stay in a particular spot until released and he is doing very well with that. Overall is making very good progress. It's hard to remember life before we had her. She adjusted very nicely to her new home. She and our cat were getting along and the cat was very interested in her, dare I say he really enjoyed her. Two weeks after we got Rylee the cat took ill and had to be put down. Our family was incredibly sad, and I think Rylee understood that something bad happened. Having Rylee in our lives and home cushioned the blow for all of us and she helped us heal. As they say, timing is everything and she is just what we needed. We've had Rylee for two months now, and in that time she has learned so much. Without jinxing myself, I'll say that she house trained within a few weeks. Sure, she thought the rug was a great place to pee and poop when she first got here, but she quickly learned that outside was even better. Alyssa trained her to use the poochie bells in just a few days and now she rings them when she has to go out. We even put a second set of bells in our family room and she learned to use them if we are all sitting in there. She graduated from Puppy Kindergarten this week and begins basic training next week. She has learned to sit, down, down stay, high five, shake hands, spin, roll over, fetch, come, and is working off leash to heel, stay, and come when called. She learns so fast and is really fun to train and play with. I've been taking here with me everywhere and she melts hearts wherever she goes. She loves the car, kids, adults, other dogs, even the vet and groomer. People can't get enough of her! We are working with her to not jump up on people when someone comes to pet her. As hard as it is for her to not jump, she really works hard to sit first before petting. I really believe that she will make a perfect therapy dog and I also think she can be scent trained to detect low blood sugar. Once basic training is complete, I plan to start with scent training. As so many dogs have, she has truly enjoyed the pandemic and spends every day sleeping in a bed in the office both my wife and I work from. In general, Besa is still in excellent health but is not immune from aging. She has some bladder leakage when she sleeps and has had a heart murmur for many years. I have included a few of our many pictures of him truly, I think there are currently more pictures of Linus than of any of my human children. He goes with us everywhere. School outings are his favorite because he gets so much attention. He also enjoys getting coffee from the little coffee stands that dot the Seattle streets. The baristas always give him extra dog treats because he is so cute. He trained easily and enjoyed puppy classes. He is very smart and learns quickly. His biggest issues are: digging in the yard and finding and tearing apart socks he seems to have a foot fetish. Long before Pearl ever started her official training, and basically from the day I brought her home, I would have her lay on my chest with her nose near my mouth. She would nap that way, and we would cuddle that way. So, if I was wearing an article of clothing when I had a bloodsugar issue, I would use that article as my scenting tool. She learned skills and behaviors associated with service dog duties and along with the trainer, we came up with ways to add the skills that Pearl seemed to intuitively have to new skills and put it all together. I feel like none of this would not be if I would have not had Pearl and you come into my life. Pearl is more than just a service dog, more than a companion animal…. Oh Rochelle, I wish you could see her. She is not only beautiful, she has a calm sweetness to her that just makes you melt. I took her with me to California a couple of weeks ago. When I got there, my dad was laying down in bed. After we came in and gave a hug to mom, I took her off leash and she went immediately back to their bedroom where dad was laying. She looked at me and I nodded and she jumped right in bed with him and quickly laid down next to him with her head on his chest. My mom said it was the first time that dad smiled and laughed for days. For the rest of the week that we were there, Pearl rotated from dad to I, checking in with both of us often.
