Buying A Boxer Puppy? Finding Your Puppy -- Buying From the Breeder The conscientious breeder plans a breeding to reproduce the best characteristics of an outstanding sire or dam. His guide is the official AKC Standard of the breedthe written "blueprint" that helps keep the breed uniform for generations to come. You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. History The Boxer derives from two central European breeds of dog that no longer exist: the larger Danziger Bullenbeiser and smaller Brabenter Bullenbeiser. Bullenbeiser means bull-biter, and these dogs were used to chase large game through the forest. This required a strong but agile dog with a broad powerful jaw and a recessed nose. In England, the Bulldog was the favored breed for the sport, whereas in Germany large mastiff-type dogs were used. Around the s, German hunters began a concerted effort to create a new breed, crossing their Bullenbeisers with mastiff-type dogs for size, terriers for tenacity, and, finally, Bulldogs. The result was a tough agile dog with a streamlined body and strong grip. By , an entirely new breed, the Boxer, had been established. Although the exact origin of the name Boxer is obscure, it may have been derived from the German Boxl. The Boxer was one of the first breeds to be employed as a police and military dog in Germany. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Use the Replacement Technique The replacement technique is precisely what it sounds like: replace what your puppy is biting. Biting toys is okay, but biting fingers and toes is not. If your puppy is chewing on your fingers and you want them to stop, replace your hand with a toy in their mouth. Your puppy is teething, much like a human baby does. Gnawing on things can help relieve the discomfort as their teeth grow, fall out, and are eventually replaced with their adult set. Replacing your hand with an appropriate chew toy will allow the puppy to continue their necessary soothing behavior on a better target. Withdraw from the Situation Puppies are avid learners; they grow fast, and they also learn quickly. If your puppy is playing with you and lands a bite, you should yelp. Your yelps should be: High-pitched Loud Immediately during the bite Yelp, and then remove yourself from the situation. Stand, or turn away from the puppy. Therefore the following timeline should be followed to properly train them to behave appropriately. Early socialization teaches your dog that other animals and humans are not inherently dangerous. Experts recommend at least friends from smaller dogs to other dogs within the family or as outside acquaintances. Starting small will help your puppy cope with the new friends. Also, instead of random interactions, your dog will learn greater social skills if they are frequently around the same few animals. When considering a playmate for your puppy, make sure it has already been socialized. A socialized puppy will make your dog feel secure and safe. Allow your dog to socialize at its own pace. Please do not force the puppy into socializing as it will stress it, causing it to act aggressively, resulting in injuries and traumatic memory. American bulldogs are sensitive to emotions and show their uneasy behavior through aggression or chewing the closest objects. If you have no choice but to leave your dog at home while you go to work or school, get them an interactive play toy that will keep them occupied for prolonged periods. Interactive toys are a great way to keep your Bulldog from chewing your furniture. Step 3: Potty Training Teaching your bulldog puppy to potty in one location or outside is the third most crucial step in the training. Take Your American Bulldog Puppy Out Regularly Take the dog out every hour to the spot where you want the dog to excrete during the day for several days. So if your dog scratches the foot of the door or whines around the house, it means it wants to go for a potty. During training, the location plays a huge role, and it will help your Bulldog comply and be active during the day. This will reduce the chances of them going to the toilet inside and teach them where they should go. In addition, if your American Bulldog gets lost, he can always find his way home if he is familiar with the location. Puppy Stage: By 6 Months Your Bulldog puppy should be able to socialize peacefully with other dogs, chew on appropriate toys, and be ready to begin basic obedience training at this age. Teaching your pup to regulate the force of a bite is crucial. Take advantage of the stop in behavior by providing the puppy with something appropriate to chew on right away. Bones, chew toys, Kongs, squeaky toys, and stuffed animals are all good choices. Spaying and neutering are also methods to control aggression and other complications in American bulldogs. Spaying is done on female puppies, while neutering is done on male puppies. Related: When do Puppies Calm Down? Step 5: Teach Basic Commands Start teaching your dog with basic commands such as sit, stand, speak, rollover, and high five. Instead of negative or disciplinary reinforcements, use positive reinforcements. Step 6: Exercise Your Bulldog In Cool Temperatures American bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed due to their short muzzles, making breathing difficult on hot and humid days. If your dog is panting during training, take a break in a cool room. In addition, having a water bottle for your dog during training is highly recommended. Growth Stage: One Year Your Bulldog should know basic obedience and be acclimated to a daily feeding and exercise routine by the time they are a year old. American Bulldogs are prone to many health issues, and the most common among them are obesity and Hip Dysplasia. Engaging your American Bulldog in physical activities regularly helps to avoid these. In addition, there are numerous dog sports available to keep your Bulldog busy. Daily Walk A daily walk is necessary for an American Bulldog to release pent-up energy and maintain his health. The sights, sounds, and smells that your Ambull encounters during the walk will help to stimulate their minds. Because an American Bulldog can walk vast distances, the duration of the walk is only limited by your time and energy. Therefore, the minimal amount of time should be 30 to 45 minutes every day. High Intensity Activities In addition to the daily walk, it is critical to engage them in other activities that will tire and occupy them. Shorter, higher-intensity activities, as well as muscle-building and strength workouts, are examples. Training your pup with a flirt pole can help control its impulses. Flirt poles for dogs are made up of a handle, a pole, a cord, and a toy or lure that looks like a prey animal, similar to cat feather teasers. Flirt poles can provide them with an additional challenge by allowing them to chase a variety of various toys that you can attach. As your puppy chases the bait, you move it around the ground in circles or different directions. Playing Fetch with your Ambull is another fantastic way to release pent-up energy. This game can be played for hundreds of tosses by American Bulldogs, who are known for their love of balls and toys. In your backyard, set up an agility or obstacle course. You may make your agility with stuff you already have or purchase reasonably priced agility sets. Tug-of-war is a definite favorite of all strong dogs. To expend more energy, make them kneel and pull back. Ascertain that this is a managed game in which they only release when you want them to. A spring pole is famous among dogs that love tug-of-war. A spring pole is just a spring linked to a rope that swings from a tree branch or beam and has a lure or toy at the end. Mental Stimulation One of the most common reasons for behavior problems in dogs is boredom and high energy levels. Destructive behavior, annoying barking, digging, and even fleeing are examples of this. The American Bulldog is also a breed with a high level of intelligence. Therefore, to avoid boredom, it is critical to provide mental stimulation and difficulties. How to Make Your Training Effective? The American Bulldog is a challenging dog to train in the very beginning. However, once a command is mastered, the American Bulldog remembers the training well. Confine Your Pet Into A Training Area Allocating a confined space such as the backyard or an empty room for your Bulldog will reduce distraction during the early stage of training and help him concentrate. Then, when your Bulldog is familiar with the location and can do everything you command without hesitation, you can move on to the next level or location. It requires an enormous level of patience. At first, your Bulldog will not be obedient to you, but with repetition, your Bulldog will learn to follow your commands. Sticking To A Training Schedule Independent training can get messy, and you may end up repeating the training you did months ago. For example, some respond to aggressive training, while others learn to be obedient even without a leash. Hence, you may have to adopt different techniques in different situations. During training sessions, you must use positive reinforcement. If your dog has trouble hearing you at times, this is where hand gestures come in handy as your dog will be able to see you and follow your commands. Keep Lessons Short American bulldogs have a short attention span. As a result, avoid training for long periods. Consult A Professional Keep in touch with the local veterinarian as it will help you foresee any health-related issues that may arise in your dog. Also, consulting a professional trainer will help you gain tips on getting your American Bulldog under control. The way you respond will be crucial as it will tell your puppy if that is an acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Exaggerate if you need to. Your bulldog would stop biting you because he would be startled with your reaction. As they say, Bulldogs are lovers not fighters. Ignore him after he bites you. Wanting nothing more than to please you and get your attention, he would learn that what he did was unacceptable and he would try not to do it again. Be consistent with your response each time he does this but stay calm when training him to stop biting. The key to getting your bulldog puppy to stop biting is through ignoring him. By giving him the cold treatment when he bites you, you are promoting bite inhibition. Your pup may be feeling uncomfortable and might be in pain because of his condition. You can give him ice cubes as these will help numb his gums from the pain. Another way to teach your pup not to bite is by praising him when he stops biting. Remember, bulldogs aim to please you and will bask in your praises and affection so these are good motivators for your desired behavior. You can use the ignore method or praise method. While some of these minis may closely resemble their larger counterparts, they may not act similarly. Are boxers hypoallergenic? Unfortunately, boxers are not hypoallergenic. What problems do Boxers have? Boxer dogs are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces. This trait narrows their airway and causes breathing problems. How long do Boxer dogs live? The Boxer dog breed has a short lifespan compared to other dogs. He can only live up to 9—10 years, and this is due to the prevalence of health issues in the breed. Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Contact Welcome Located in New Hampshire, we are a small family-owned kennel and have been breeding Labrador Retrievers for over 20 years. Our kids are now grown and gone and we have migrated back north to scenic Warner, New Hampshire to build our forever spot here for ourselves and the dogs. We raise sound English-style Labrador Retrievers. Before we consider a dog as breeding or stud quality, they are judged for temperament and conformation and must pass OFA hip and elbow clearances and eye clearances. Our Labradors are part of our family; we raise our puppies in our custom whelping room that is sanitary and climate-controlled. The room has gentle music playing and a bit of traffic every once in a while to show off the new additions when it is safe for visiting. We do our best to place our puppies in a home that best suits each puppy by conducting temperament screening and aptitude tests. We spend an enormous amount of time with these puppies and have had great success in evaluating the "right fit" of puppy to family. Goals My goal as a breeder is to produce a sound quality Labrador Retriever as close to the AKC standard to my liking. Every breeder has a preference to coat, size, movement, attitude, face and tail. The most important thing to remember in breeding is to keep in mind the purpose of the dog and ensure that they are physically able to get the job done for which they were bred. Our Boys. What is a Pomeranian German Shepherd Mix? However, this hybrid is definitely a very recent development. The first designer breed, the Labradoodle , emerged in .Since then, people have been captivated by creating new designer breeds. These crossbreeds are often very cute, but there is a deep concern among animal welfare professionals that this trend is not a good thing. Designer Dogs -What's the Problems For example, puppy mills take advantage of this consumer craze and flooding the market with puppies that were created in squalid, inhumane conditions. Many puppy mill puppies are riddled with health issues and temperament problems due to poor breeding practices. However, people are so desperate to have these fashionable puppies that they buy them anyway. There is also a real concern that people will get tired of these puppies after the craze dies down. However, unlike a fashion item or a tech gadget that can be cast aside, these dogs will end up neglected or abandoned. This scenario has already played out with other breeds that became wildly popular for a short period of time. A few years after the trend fades away, thousands of dogs end up unwanted in animal shelters. If you are considering getting one of these dogs, please think hard and long about this decision. Keep in mind that this is a living creature, and if you get one, you must commit to loving it and caring for it for its whole life. Also please make sure that you get one from an ethical source and you are not supporting a cruel and exploitative industry by putting money into a puppy mill. We will talk more about how to acquire a dog from a responsible source later in the article. The GSD was developed in Germany to herd and guard sheep. Today, German Shepherds are primarily kept as companions, but some are still used for working purposes including herding, protection, and scent work. German Shepherds are often used by the police force and the military. Some are even used as service dogs for people with disabilities. German Shepherds require a lot of exercise, training and mental stimulation. They are not the best dogs for novice dog owners. They do best with experienced handlers who can channel their energy into constructive outlets. Check out this article for more information about the German Shepherd Temperament. Meet the Pomeranian The Pomeranian, on the other hand, is a very different type of dog. Pomeranians originated in Europe for the sole purpose of companionship. Pomeranians were popular lap dogs for European royalty. These dogs are loving, joyful, playful, and cuddly. They love to be near people at all times. They do not require an excessive amount of exercise, and they usually do fine in city apartments. On the downside, Pomeranians are known for being vocal, anxious and hard to housetrain. You can learn more about Pomeranians in this article about the Pomeranian temperament. As you can see, Pomeranians and German Shepherds have very different temperaments. Therefore, there can be a lot of variability in the traits of German Shepherd Pomeranian mixes. In general, German Pomeranians tend to be intelligent, active, alert, lively and loyal. They have fluffy coats and they definitely shed a lot! These dogs are usually medium-sized, although their height and weights can vary widely. German Shepherd Pomeranian mix colors are likewise highly variable. They can be black, tan, red, brown, or a combination of these. Their coats are usually thick, and they require a lot of grooming. We will talk more about German Shepherd Pomeranian grooming in the next section. Grooming This is a breed that has a lot of hair and requires a lot of grooming. You will need to stock up on basic grooming supplies such as combs, brushes, nail trimmers, wipes and scissors. Brushing your Pomeranian German Shepherd mix every day is a must. This will help establish a strong foundation for their obedience and behavior. Consistency: Be consistent in your training methods and commands. Rewarding your dog for following commands will motivate them to repeat the desired actions. Short training sessions: Keep the training sessions short and focused, as Pomeranian German Shepherd mixes have shorter attention spans. Aim for minute sessions multiple times throughout the day rather than one long session. Socialization: Expose your Pomeranian Shepherd to different people, animals, environments, and situations from an early age. This will help them develop confidence and prevent behavioral issues. Basic commands: Teach basic commands such as sit, stay, come, down, and leave it using consistent cues and hand signals. Positive reinforcement only: Avoid using punishment or harsh methods during training as it can cause fear or anxiety in your dog and hinder their progress. Exercise Requirements German Shepherd Pomeranian mixes are active and energetic dogs that require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Here are some key points to remember when it comes to their exercise needs: Daily exercise: Aim for at least one hour of exercise each day to keep your German Shepherd Pomeranian mix physically and mentally stimulated. Mental stimulation: Besides physical exercise, provide mental stimulation with puzzle toys, obedience training, or interactive games to prevent boredom. Playtime: Allow them ample playtime in a safe and enclosed space. Fetch, tug-of-war, and hide-and-seek are great ways to keep them entertained. Training classes: Consider enrolling your German Shepherd Pomeranian mix in obedience classes or agility training. This not only adds variety but also helps channel their intelligence and energy in positive ways. Socialization: Regularly expose your dog to different environments, people, and animals from a young age. This promotes good behavior and helps prevent behavioral issues. Weather considerations: Be mindful of weather conditions when planning outdoor activities. Extreme heat or cold can be uncomfortable for these dogs due to their double coat. If they appear tired or show signs of exhaustion, take a break and provide plenty of water for hydration. Because a mix can inherit any combination fo traits from their parents, you do want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. If a Pomeranian Mix takes after their Pom parent, you can expect a small, fluffy companion that is affectionate, playful, and has a big personality. Poms tend to be active little dogs that love their families and are affectionate with them. They tend to do well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They can be suspicious of strangers, but they love attention so will warm up quickly as long as they have been properly socialized. Pomeranians are alert dogs that are prone to barking. If left unchecked, it can become an issue. By training your dog to stop barking early on, you can keep this from becoming a nuisance issue at home and also when out interacting with other people and dogs. If the other parent breed is known for having a similar temperament, then you can expect something similar from a Pom Mix. You do want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely have their own quirks. Although the breeder should have started some socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home to help them grow into a well-rounded dog. Pomeranians tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They do well in most climates, but are very sensitive to heat. They adapt well to apartments as well as larger homes and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Pomeranian Mix. However, you do still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they are likely to introduce their own set of quirks and traits. Good, reputable breeding practices matter. And, just as a mix can inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Pomeranian side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Pom Mix include patellar luxation , hip dysplasia, eye problems, hypothyroidism , epilepsy, and heart issues. They can also be prone to having allergies. As a small dog breed, they are also prone to developing dental disease. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests, clearances, or evaluations that have been done. Pomeranians are intelligent and generally easy to train. Even though this also makes it easy to train them into bad habits and housetraining can be difficult, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, you can expect something similar from a Pomeranian Mix. However, if the other parent breed has traits that make them more difficult to train, then you will need to be prepared for that possibility in a Pom Mix puppy. A mixed-breed can end up with a coat that is just like one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. If a Pom Mix ends up with a Pom coat, they will be fluffy, shed a bit year-round, shed more as the seasons change, need daily brushing, and need a monthly bath. Professional grooming is also recommended every weeks for a Pomeranian. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed helps prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or daily use of an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Poms may be energetic little dogs, but they sit in a more moderate activity level. Daily walks plus some playtime are enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. If the other parent breed has a similar activity level, then you can expect the same from a Pom Mix. If the other parent breed has a higher or lower activity level, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for that potential range. Pomeranians are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pomeranian generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Pom Mix. Featured Pomeranian Mix Article. Many owners opt for a grain-free option, which is what to go for to avoid allergies in your dogs. Always consult with the vet before giving such products to your pup. They will determine whether the pooch needs their food boosted. Rottweiler German Shepherd Hybrid Exercise Requirements The German Shepherd Rottweiler hybrid is not recommended for owners who have small homes or apartments not only because of their size but also because of their exercise requirements which will include outdoor activities that are best conducted in a spacious backyard. They can spend plenty of time enjoying the outdoors in fine weathers. They also tend to become destructive and chew a lot of things if cooped up for too long. If you are going to leave for a dog for longer than a few hours, it is better to leave them at a dog daycare so they can enjoy and socialize with other dogs. The dog is also fine with any kind of weather since they harbor a decent tolerance of heat and cold. Your dogs will need to have a good exercise regimen especially outdoors. They need to have high physical exercise if you want them to stay fit, healthy, and mentally stimulated. You can start by walking them at least twice a day for at least an hour. You can also opt to jog with your Shottie because experts also recommended that they are involved in high impact and fast-paced exercises. Like most dogs, they also enjoy playing games like balls and fetch at public parks. This can help their mind active and their muscles lean. Always remember that your pet is prone to obesity so satisfying their exercise regimen is important. Rottweiler Crossbred with German Shepherd Training Since its parent breeds are famous for their protective instincts, the chances are that the puppy will also inherit them. For this reason, you should socialize your puppy at a young age so prevent their aggressive tendencies and have them get used to the presence of other animals and people. The training your Shottie will receive highly depends on your intention for adopting the dog. First, you must ask yourself if you want them to become a guard dog or a companion dog. Positive reinforcement such as rewards and praises are highly recommended in training your pet. Here are some of the effective methods in which you can teach your dog: The Mark Good Behavior Method — Pick out a unique sound for your dog and chime it whenever your dog does something right. You can use it so that your puppy will learn that music means a reward is coming. Eventually, you can use it along with command words. The Mirror Me Method — If your dog is glued to you all the time, you can use this chance to teach them how to behave through mimicry. The Tied To You Method — If you intent your dog to become a companion dog, keep him tied to you most of the time and try to build communication and trust with them. German Shepherd Crossbreed with Rottweiler and Families One of the many ways that you can adopt a Rottman Shepherd is through rescue shelters but be careful in picking one. You must be well aware of its upbringing and temperament because there is a chance that these dogs were abandoned because of behavioral issues as a result mainly of lack of training, poor obedience, lack of socialization, or sometimes, even aggression. With small kids, it can be hard to control them because they are quite large. They might become overwhelming for the children. On the other hand, they are also in need of a company most of the time because they tend to become destructive if bored. With proper training at a young age, they can become beautiful guard dogs that are active. They can also provide families with good companionship as they love creatures. These dogs are a robust working breed that descend from the mastiffs of the Roman legions. Can we meet in person? Have they been socialised? Stephanie Hill Otto, male Rottweiler This is Otto, he's a 3yo Rottweiler and due to unforeseen circumstances I really need to find him a new home. Although he isn't my first rottweiler he's actually my third , he is the first animal I've needed to rehome. So needless to say, this is a very new and highly emotional scenario for me. So a little about us, I'll try to be brief. Otto came into my life about two years ago, after I responded to a gumtree ad and he was in one hell of a sorry state. It took a little while to work out what he needed, as the original owners were far from up front about how neglected he'd been and it took a whole lot more time to get him healthy. He was way under weight, had terribly fly bitten ears, mange all over his back and hind quarters, appeared to have never been brushed or bathed and had absolutely zero training. He didn't even have a bed to send with him, I assume he didn't have one at all, nor did he have any toys or even a collar. It was tragic. Now, after a lot of work, he's in excellent condition and although training is a constant work in progress; he's a very, very clever boy and always eager to please. He's always been good with my daughter's little fox terrier, and she's not exactly the friendliest of dogs either, always loves to have visitors over and if we can keep calm, he loves to play with the bigger kids for as long as they will humour him. Smaller children would not be suitable though, as he can get quite excited, manners are easily forgotten and little people get knocked down. All in all, he's just so full of personality, much more than any other adult rottweiler I've had the pleasure of handling and the rewards he gives me back always made the challenges worth it. He's also recently been desexed, but it's worth mentioning he absolutely hates the vet and we've had no choice but to medicate him prior to appointments. Another example of why it's critical to expose dogs and socialise them while puppies! He will of course come with all his favourite toys, his hesham bed, bowls if needed and a genuine Flexi pro XXL retractable leash. So why am I rehoming him? Without getting into detail, I've been struggling with some serious medical issues for some time, which have progressively gotten worse and there's no sign things will alleviate in the near future. It absolutely breaks my heart to admit I really can't give him what he needs anymore. Try as I might to find alternative arrangements, it's becoming too difficult for Otto having me ill much of the time and he needs consistency if he's to have a long happy life. I have so much more information to share, taking on a dog like him isn't going to be easy and i won't be taking this decision lightly. So if you think you can give him the home he needs, I want to hear from you and maybe, just maybe, you're the person we need. This is a repost of the ad. I tentatively put the feelers out a few months ago, but I couldn't go through with it and tried desperately to find an alternative arrangement. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make anything work, so it's time to do what's best for him. Thanks for reading, Cam and Otto. Terms and fees for adoption are negotiable for the right person. clarks german shepherd puppies - Dog Shampoo Ear Cleaners To know what to look for when selecting grooming items and how to use these items, read the following guidance. In addition, I have listed personal recommendations of Amazon products that have been both tried and tested. When you are choosing a nail clipper there are actually three types of nail clippers you can choose. Everyone has their preference and even some dogs do as well. Regardless of the type you choose, make sure they are durable and high quality. When you squeeze the handle, a blade pushes through the nail like a guillotine, clipping it short. This type of clipper is better for thinner nails or small to medium breeds. Bulldogs usually have thicker nails, so these may not be the best option for your puppy. Scissor Nail Clippers : Again, they look very similar to scissors or pliers. Like the guillotine, you place the nail between the blades and squeeze the handles together. The blades come together and clip the nail. These nails are better for most bulldog and large breeds since the scissors offer better force when snipping thick nails. If you are using guillotine or scissor nail clippers, be sure to purchase nail files as these cutters leave sharp edges when cutting. Simply smooth out the edges after cutting. Once cut, the quick will bleed for quite a while so dipping it in styptic powder, or using a styptic pencil , will stop the bleeding instantly. Tooth Care Kit Many bulldog breeds suffer from tooth problems, so it is recommended that you get your bulldog puppy used to teeth brushing as soon as they come home. Therefore, before you bring your bulldog puppy home, invest in a good quality toothbrush for him. In addition, make sure you have canine friendly toothpaste found. Human toothpastes can make dogs sick so avoid using any of them. Vaseline A strange little item to put in your grooming supplies, Vaseline is excellent for keeping footpads looking their best and for making little bulldog puppy noses nice and shiny. I recommend using year-round, but it is a must have for dry winter months. Dog Wipes Since bulldog puppies are known for having lots of wrinkles, it may come as no surprise that you need to wipe them clean on a daily basis. This will help keep your bulldog puppy healthy and will prevent dirt and debris from causing yeast infections in the folds of skin. Make a habit of using dog wipes on your bulldog puppies wrinkles every day. Since bulldogs tend to have large eyes, they can be prone to dirt and debris getting into them. When this happens, having an eye wash handy could mean the difference between having to go to the vet for a serious eye injury or not. Cotton Balls I use cotton balls to wipe eyes and ears clean but I also use them in the ears during a bath. Place a few cotton balls in the ears and it will help keep water out of them when you are bathing your bulldog puppy. Dog Shampoo Which brings us to bathing. Instead, choose one specially formulated for dogs such as this colloidal oatmeal dog shampoo on Amazon. Ear Cleaners The final item I would recommend for your grooming supplies is an ear cleaner. They were all falling asleep while I was brushing them. But lord this was after 5 minutes. She is always shedding too. There isnt a day I have to vacuum or sweep because of her hair. But this did an amazing job and she was in love with it too. My smaller dog didnt need the blade side but the rubber side worked perfect on her without hurting or pulling to hard. Best decision ever by far! Monica U. This is the best thing ever invented. Michael H. My puppy loves this thing! It gets so much hair out and the retractable comb blades makes for easy clean-up! Really gets a lot of hair out of my shedding lab and easy hair clean up. I have been recommending it to everyone. Chad S. Great product!! Christie F. Our GSD has allergies and a huge shedding problem. I bought a King Komb and used it for 3 days. Then we went on vacation and Eliska was boarded, which included a bath. The manager remarked that she pulled very little shed from her, and that "We must brush her often" After only 3 days? Pat R. Love it Works great on my Corgis Patti H. I love this product!! I have 2 German Shepherds and this works amazing Victoria P. Denise M. I absoulty love the king komb I have a husky and it has help with the amount of hair thats in our house! I highley recommend this product. Phil S. I use this brush on my Australian Sheperd and I literally could make another Aussie with the amount of hair that this comb pulls off. I wish the rubber side was more than 3 rows because I use that side most often and I have to clean it off every time I pull it through his hair. I would definitely buy another comb if it was only the undercoat brush. Joe G. As you see we have a German Shedder! This king Komb has been a lifesaver! We have bought many instruments as well as a furminator which Nitro our German Shedder does not like and we have to chase him while trying to use it. He is relaxed and enjoys being groomed. Will definitely buy another one if this one tears up. Thank you for making such a quality product! Carole G. I was really skeptical at first, I bought it because it had such good reviews! This is better than the furminator that we own. Our furbaby enjoys being brushed. I'm however inside and from the distance taking the photo as it is shedding season; not a fan of a mouth full of fur. Would purchase again for my parents who also own a crazy shedding german shepherd! Gary V. Wow this product is amazing. My husky Luna loves her brushes and this one is by far her and my favourite. He rushes up to you when he sees it in your hand, and then lays down or rolls over so you can reach all the right spots. He will even give you a nudge to keep going when you stop. The look on his face tells me I made the right decision to buy one. Thank you King Kanine. Kyle R. Butter is my 1 shedder. She didn't like to be brushed but once I started using the King Komb she loves it. The hair pile on the right is after about 3 mins of brushing. Steve D. First, you want to consider when and where you will be using the brush. If you will be traveling frequently, a small brush is easy to pack and carry. Second, the size of your hand will determine whether it is comfortable for you to hold the brush. Different types of handles offer advantages and drawbacks. Materials: Think about what you want to achieve with your brush. Is it to smooth the coat and catch loose hair? Or do you want to provide a way to massage your dog while stimulating the skin to shed dead skin and encourage hair growth? Thus, there are brushes that are bristle-only or some that are firmer with rubber or pins. Each type will work differently when grooming your dog. Also, would you prefer bristles made from synthetic or natural materials? A dog who does not like to be groomed may prefer a firmer bristle. Even the handle or base of the brush can be made from different materials and certain handles will have extra material applied to allow for a no-slip grip. For dogs with a thicker coat, longer, thinner bristles will reach through the coat to the skin. Demeanor: If your dog becomes anxious with grooming , you will want a brush that is soft and soothing, so it seems like you are petting him rather than brushing. Tips Brush your bulldog at least once a week since this breed will perspire between their wrinkles. Brush well between their folds, especially under the arms and between the legs. If any sign of a rash is noted you can treat it sooner rather than later. Avoid brushing areas with a rash to prevent further irritation. The first brush is useful for removing shed fur, the second brush helps massage the skin to release oils, while the final brush helps polish their fur to a shine by sweeping away debris and spreading the oils. Each of these brushes comes in an easy-to-hold round shape. Like the Safari combo, this product comes with pins on one side and bristles on the other. The pins on this brush are a little thicker and use permanent rounded tips instead of the more-popular coated pins, while the bristles are a standard design. The other main difference in this product is the handle, which is a plastic base with a rubber grip. Bulldogs are prone to collecting moisture in their wrinkles, especially when they drool, and cleaning their wrinkles first helps minimize the impact of that. Get rid of the tangles when you start using your brush. Smoothing out their coat by removing tangles and matted areas is key to keeping your Bulldog as clean, happy, and healthy as possible. Brush debris away after loosening the tangles. Without tangles to catch dirt, brushing them clean is significantly more effective. Bathe them as necessary. Visually inspect the areas you brush. Visual inspections help mitigate these risks. Make it part of your routine. This is particularly true if you give them plenty of care and affection during each brushing session. Frequently Asked Questions Here are some of the most common questions people have about brushing a Bulldog. Daily is best, mainly because Bulldogs shed a lot despite their short hairs, and leaving them alone for too long can quickly lead to hairs floating all over your house. Daily brushing with an emphasis on removing shed hairs mitigates this risk. Brushing Bulldogs is extremely easy. A few quick strokes in each area is usually enough to keep them looking great. These elevate your dog several feet and can make the entire process significantly easier. That depends on the tools and techniques you use to take care of them. The main factor that increases the time is the need to clean their wrinkles carefully. Conclusion By now, you know much more about the different types of brushes that can work for Bulldogs and how you can use them to provide gentle and consistent care. Most Bulldogs do particularly well with a two-step process of removing any tangles in their fur, then brushing out the dirt and debris before it has a chance to accumulate. You can make this easier by using the right shampoo and conditioner during their baths. If you want to make brushings easier, make sure you clean the floors and surfaces of your house.
