Long Coats and Allergies To be perfectly honest, it is not the coats that people are allergic to when they say they have an allergy with dogs. The allergy is likely from the dander, which is dead skin cells. This should be known before purchasing a Golden. Truth be told, when the coat on a Golden is trimmed or cut, this could cause health issues for the Retriever and it could also ruin the gorgeous coat of the Golden Retriever. Another issue you will need to consider before choosing a Golden Retriever. If you are considering a Golden, but want short hair to eliminate the shedding. You likely do not want a Golden. Most animals, dogs and cats included, do shed at least twice a year. Some animals, it may be minimal, for others, it seems endless. You may also find hair in some of the strangest locations. Even if you take your Retriever to a groomer, this will not entirely prevent loose hairs from floating all over the house. Including landing on your dinner plate. There is likely going to be dog hairs everywhere including the furniture and also rooms that the dog never enters. There are a few things that you can do to help minimize the amount of hair floating through your home. Brush your Golden Retriever on a daily basis Bathe the Retriever every other month Be sure to feed them a high quality dog food Never Shave Even in the hottest weather, or when you are tired of the dog hair, you cannot make a sudden decision to shave the hair off your Golden Retriever. The Golden Retriever is gifted with a Double Coat. The undercoat is shorter and soft. The outer coat is lengthier, smooth and waterproof. This is meant to keep the dirt and debris off of them. Again, you really are harming your Golden Retriever when you shave him. That undercoat is there to regulate the body temp even when it is hot outside. Options There are options if you want a short haired Golden Retriever. Goldens are known for the long hair, even when the hair is shorter than some other dogs, the hair is longer than a short haired dog. One option is to consider a different breed of dog. You may want to consider one that has short hair or even very little hair. However, even a short haired dog will shed at times. I was a parent to a Chihuahua, until she took a trip over the Rainbow Bridge. Very short hair on her, yet she still shed. There are times now, if I go into a storage tub, I will still find some of her short hairs. Basically, you will come across dog hair whether it is long or short. You could consider a Golden Doodle, a Labrador or another breed known for short hair. There are breeders who specifically breed Golden Retrievers with short hair. This will take research on your part if you insist on a Golden Retriever, but prefer short hair. The variations in hair length on the Golden Retrievers is due to mutant genes that have been passed down generations. To be considered a Golden Retriever, the American Kennel Association requires that the list of characteristics for each dog breed is adhered to tightly. This means to be a purebred Golden Retriever, the coat must be X inches in length. If it is not, that means that the dog has been mixed somewhere in the generations. When originally bred over in Scotland, the intention was to accompany the owner and retrieve the game that is shot while on a hunting trip. The breeder knew the weather would be a factor for the animal, so the hair needed to be long, with a short undercoat to regulate the canine's body heat. The outer coat should resist water and debris and dirt. What started as a need and requirement, soon became an aesthetic want in those who chose to have one of these Golden colored dogs. Breeding for a pure Golden Retriever created uniformity of the long hair. The uniformity also applied to the texture and the coloring. The breeder needed to choose breeds that had long hair in order to obtain that in the offspring. Today, however, the length is unimportant when it comes to the Golden Retriever for families. These dogs spend less time outside versus dogs in the past. The Growth When a Golden Retriever is first born, he or she will have short hair. This hair will not complete growing in length until the dog is past the puppy stage. This will be approximately 1. It will actually start to feather in slowly around the time the Golden Retriever is 3 months old. Again, you will notice some, however, the thick and full coat will be completely in at around 1. The original hair that the dog is born with does not fall out or disappear. The lengthier hair will grow out as a top coat of hair. As this longer hair begins to come in, it pushes the shorter hair to the sides, which will then become the undercoat. The new coat of hair coming in will also be slightly darker also. The top coat is known as the Guard coat once it comes in fully. Shedding happens twice a year, Spring and Fall. The thick undercoat will mean more grooming is necessary to maintain a lower amount of shedding, however, it can not be avoided altogether. The other options that will help keep the shedding on the lower side is consistent grooming, a good quality food in the diet and avoiding a stressful environment. All in all, to summarize clearly, the Golden Retriever is only recognized by the American Kennel Association if it has long hair. There may be a one in a million shot that your Golden Retriever has short hair and that you were sold the dog as a purebred Golden Retriever. There are genetic tests now available that will give you and the Kennel Association the information needed. The hair length should never be a factor when it comes to loving a fur baby. Dogs are not just four legged creatures. They should be loved, cared for and treated like family. Their overall health should be more important than the length of the hair on a Golden Retriever. The Golden Retrievers flowing coat is just outer beauty. For breeders it is extremely important, for those who choose a purebred Golden Retriever, it is important to be able to see the long hair, however, it must be remembered that there is a tiny percentage that your purebred Golden Retriever will have short hair. Labrador Retrievers hail from Canada and were originally companion dogs and work assistants to fishermen in northern Canada, around the Labrador Peninsula. An incredibly popular breed, they rank as the number one breed in many countries. You can find them at work as disability assistance dogs, therapy dogs, and law enforcement screening and detection dogs. Originally bred to trace the scent of rabbits while hunting, these short-legged canines may have a genetic history that traces as far back as 2, BC, in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt. They are a friendly, outgoing, and notoriously vocal breed that can trend towards serious stubbornness. Something about the genetic mixing of these two breeds has led to a beneficial arrangement of health characteristics, often making them longer-lived than either of their parent breeds. Bassadors Have an Extremely Keen Prey Drive Owing to their heritage from two hunting dog breeds, the usually laid-back Bassador can be prone to bouts of intense chasing and hunting when smaller prey animals are around. This both makes them excellent guard dogs, as well as a possible nuisance in the middle of the night if a raccoon is digging in your trashcan. Either way, they are most likely to be friendly and outgoing with just about everyone. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their outgoing personalities and love of pets and affection make them ideally suited to any family that can give them plenty of attention. While they can be trained to avoid chasing small animals, this is a lengthy process that is not always perfectly effective. Around other dogs, however, Bassadors are affable and happily share their homes. Things to Know When Owning a Bassador: Oftentimes, owning any Labrador mixed breed can feel like taking care of a puppy for the first three years of their life. You should be careful not to overfeed them, however, as they have a genetic predisposition to gain weight quickly. Their hunting genes incline them towards vigorous activity, such as a high-speed game of fetch or an intense tug of war battle. Anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity is usually enough to help them stay at a healthy weight. Both will require substantial amounts of training to overcome. The Basset Hound breed originates from France and Belgium. This breed was originally bred to be a hardy hunting partner that had an incredibly accurate nose for scenting prey and doing long distance tracking of deer and other wildlife. It is no wonder, as Labradors are kind and easily trained, have loveable natures, and are always willing to please. The Labrador Retriever originates from Canada and was bred to be a retriever for fowl hunters and fishermen by chasing down ducks, swimming after fish, and retrieving them for their humans. Because it is such a popular breed, the Labrador Retriever is a dog that is commonly cross bred with other dog breeds for their friendliness, spunky personalities, and loyalty. Bassador The Bassador was first developed in the s and s. The goal of this crossbreeding was to produce an adorable Basset Hound-shaped dog with the intelligent, eager-to-please personality of a Labrador Retriever. Bassador puppies from the same litter can end up looking vastly different and have completely different personalities from one another. Therefore, you never truly know what your dog will grow up looking like or behaving like until they are out of their puppy years. However, you can be assured you will have a unique-looking medium-to-large dog that loves you no matter what! Bassador: Appearance Bassadors typically have the long, low body of the Basset Hound and the coloring of the parent Labrador Retriever. However, this is definitely not a rule, and in many cases, they may be taller and have the tan, black, and white coloration of their Basset Hound parent. Bassadors usually have the long, floppy ears of their Basset Hound parent. You can also expect a typical Bassador to have large, strong paws with a powerful chest, which can enable them to swim very well, hike long trails with you, and run around for ages. However, in general, Bassadors are non-aggressive, sociable, fun-loving, affectionate, and loyal dogs. Independence Bassadors love their humans and will be very happy to sit at your feet, lay on the couch, cuddle up in bed, or walk around the home with you. They adore human connection and do not do well with being left alone for long periods of time. If you work from home or have someone at the house most days, then the Bassador could be the dog for you. However, if you are going to leave them alone for hours on end, then they could suffer from separation anxiety. Friendliness Bassadors love humans, especially children! Bassadors will usually bond with a specific family member they prefer over the rest and come to rely on that person for reassurance and love. Bassadors are also sociable with other animals that are of equal size or larger than them. However, socialization from a young age is essential. Trainability Having a Labrador Retriever as a parent should make the Bassador very trainable, and that is the case…sometimes. However, most of the time, Bassadors are mildly to very stubborn—like their Basset Hound parent—and will resist training attempts. You will need endless patience with them to get them to diligently and reliably follow commands and a routine. It is certainly possible to train them and get them to accept training, although they may not be consistent in their follow through of commands and tasks. Prey Drive Bassadors have a high prey drive thanks to both of their parents being bred as hunting buddies. They have a tendency to chase small objects around, which is fun for play time, as they love playing fetch. However, keep in mind they are more likely to chase smaller pets as well. With a lot of patience and socialization, you may help them control their prey drive when it comes to other pets in the home. Energy Level Even though Bassadors may look dopey and lazy, they are anything but! Bassadors have a lot of energy and love exercise. It is essential for them to get at least an hour of exercise a day split up into two or three sessions. If they do not get enough exercise, they may suffer from joint issues and obesity. Bassadors double down on this! Your Bassador will shed every single day and require daily brushing to avoid a compacted coat and skin infections. As they have long ears and wrinkles on their faces, they will also need to have their ears cleaned everyday or at least every other day to prevent dirt build-up, which can lead to infections that can be painful and even fatal. Bassador: Common Health Concerns Bassadors are hardier than either of their parents because they are a hybrid breed, which means there is more genetic diversity at play. However, it is always good to be aware of the health conditions that may come up in their lives and understand where they come from. Bloat happens when the abdomen swells up with trapped gas. In addition to bloat, there are several other health issues that the Bassador can inherit from either its Basset Hound or Labrador Retriever parents. Before bringing a Bassador home, ask yourself the following questions. Bassadors require a quite intensive grooming regimen to stay healthy. For starters, your Bassador will require daily brushing with a slicker or shedding brush. They will need to have their ears and wrinkles cleaned three times a week to avoid infection. You will also need to brush their teeth once a day to prevent gum disease and rotten teeth. Even 10 to 15 minutes a day where you bond with your dog and help them feel better in their own skin can make a huge difference in their health. If you can commit to this, honestly, then the Bassador may be the one for you! As the Bassador sheds a lot and requires a strict grooming schedule, this breed is not appropriate for someone who has allergies or asthma. They are definitely not hypoallergenic dogs! Do I Have Enough Space? Bassadors love having a lot of space to roam around, stretch their legs, and investigate their surroundings. While they can live in apartments, they prefer to live in larger homes with constant access to a garden where they can run around and smell things. Bassadors are considered a fairly new designer breed, which means there are few breeders dedicated to breeding them. It is important to remember that you will also need to include the costs of veterinary visits, vaccinations, sterilizations, and training in your Bassador. Are Bassadors good emotional support dogs? Bassadors are incredibly loveable and loyal. However, their stubbornness and difficulty in training can make them unsuitable for a role as an emotional support animal.
