Skin looses its elasticity and cleaning wrinkles will be more important than ever. An older Pug will be more susceptible to infections. Take extra time to clean the folds and keep them dry. Your Pug's veterinarian should be performing more thorough tests, especially for sugar levels. Eye exams are very important, as well. Just as with humans, an older Pug may be more susceptible to developing diabetes, arthritis , have problems with joints and their bones may be more brittle. The pounds that they have been carrying around and the body structure that they have short legs especially have been taking its toll. At this age, excess weight be a problem. It is recommended to make a gradual change in the diet, to ensure that meals have a higher count of nutrients specifically for aging pets. If you previously gave no-so-healthy snacks, make an effort to change over to a solid, healthy meal and snack plan. It will be time to make a change in regard to a vitamin and mineral supplement, switching to a senior formula. Additional supplements can be helpful depending on a Pug's specific needs. Most often, this breed does best with supplements to aid in joint health. Omega 3 can help to keep the skin and coat healthy and combat drying issues. The intensity of exercise should be scaled back a bit for seniors ; though daily duration of activity should remain as normal if the older Pug can handle it. It is still important go for walks so that a dog's heart stays healthy; movement is very necessary. However, once your Pug dog is a senior, you do not want to overdo activities as an older heart will not be able to handle what a younger heart was able to. It is during this time that you want to make the household as quite and peaceful as possible. Unless you absolutely must, do not move your furniture or make any changes that could cause stress or confusion. Creatures of habit, dogs know where things are and it can be disturbing if the environment is changed. The ability to hold elimination may weaken as bladder and bowel muscle loose some strength. At this time, you may want to start using doggie diapers. As odd as they may look, this will help your Pug and your home stay sanitary. If your senior does have accidents, never scold or punish. More often than not, the mother will require her pups to be delivered by a C-section. This is due to the fact that unborn Pugs have large and broad heads, whilst their mom has a very narrow pelvis. This awkward combination makes natural birth difficult. If the birth is successful, Pugs commonly have litters containing puppies, with 4 pups being the average. If your baby Pug is born naturally, their mother will next turn to chewing off the umbilical cord and cleaning them up. This is an important part of the bonding experience for mother dogs. The newborn Pugs will often nurse from their mother. When they are not nursing, they will spend the majority of their time sleeping. Newborn Pugs Pug pups begin their life fully reliant on their mother. They are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. A coat should be present, with the color being commonly either fawn or black. Fawn pups may experience their coat color lightening or darkening in shade as they mature. Their eyes and ears will be closed at birth and will remain this way for a while yet. Unable to support their own body weight, they will crawl on their stomach to get around. Baby Pugs are also not able to regulate their temperature, meaning that it is very important to stay warm. They will commonly clump together in piles, sharing body heat. Finally, the mother will also have to help her pups urinate and defecate as they are unable to do so by themselves. She does this by licking the anal and genital areas. One Week Old Baby Pug During the first week of life, baby Pug pups will either be nursing off their mother or sleeping. As they are still blind and deaf at this stage, they will not bother exploring or moving around more than necessary, spending most of their time lying close to their littermates and mother. Their weight should steadily increase every day. At the end of their first week of life, they should have doubled their birth weight, or at least come close. The owners of the pups will need to keep an eye on their breathing as brachycephalic breeds, such as the Pug, commonly have breathing issues. Two Week Old Baby Pug As we hit two weeks of age, we see a key development in the puppies growth; their eyes will open for the very first time! To begin with, their eye color will be blue, but will likely transition into a dark brown as they mature. Owners need to check over their eyes to ensure there are no issues, as this breed can be susceptible to ocular problems. At this stage, they may be a little more curious about their surroundings due to their newfound eyesight. However, they will still primarily be focused on sleeping and nursing. Their weight should continue to rise steadily over the coming weeks. By this time, the ears of the baby Pug pups will have opened. They will be able to hear for the first time and will begin reacting to more sounds. Their eyesight will also have developed significantly, with them being able to recognize their mother, littermates, and objects placed in their den. Along with their newfound perception of the world, they should now be able to support their own body weight and stand up. They may be able to walk, albeit with an unsteady gait. With all the interesting sights and sounds around them, they will likely be a lot more inquisitive of their surroundings. They may explore the den as much as their wobbly legs will carry them. The Pug puppies will also start teething, with their baby teeth coming through for the first time. This may start a passing interest in solid food. Gaining Independence On top of all this, they should now be able to urinate and defecate on their own, without any stimulation from their mother. We can also expect to see the start of the early socialization period. The puppies will begin developing behaviors and social skills for the first time, taking part in play with their littermates. Owners of the puppies should take advantage of this period to help them get used to human touch and presence. They will be establishing relationships with their mother, den mates, and people. Training can begin at this early stage. Despite the fact that their brains still have a lot of developing to do, a start can still be made on teaching them basic crate and potty training. They will also likely be much more mobile on their feet. Little adventures will be common and the puppies will play together often. Soft, easy to eat puppy food can be given. They will continue to rise in weight and keep learning social skills, with more complex behaviors being shown. While they seem a lot more independent at this stage, they will still require plenty of time with their mother and den mates before they are ready to be moved to a new home. Six Week Old Baby Pug At six weeks old, the Pug puppies are fast approaching the age where they reach full independence. By now, they should be fully weaned off their mother and placed onto solid food only. This is a big step. There is still much to learn. Up until now, the Pug puppies have been very curious and interested in completely new things. But they have always been safe under the watchful eye of their mom, too. Now, as they finally gain independence, the puppies learn to be cautious and careful; traits that keep them alive in the wild. Eight Week Old Baby Pug At eight weeks old, the Pug pups are developed enough to be able to leave their mother and littermates behind. They can be sold and moved into a new loving home. Today we will discuss about Pug puppy development stages! To know why this happens, you need to understand each stage of development that your pup goes through to become an adult. In this stage, your Pug pup will first open his eyes, and begin to respond to light and movements and sounds around him. At this stage, he will begin to move around a little, adjusting to the earth beneath his feet and crawling in his box. He will begin to recognize his mother and his siblings and any objects you place in his box. He will be alert and sensitive to his environment and begin to recognize you and your family. This is a crucial stage in his growth as now he learns all it takes to be a dog, so let him be with his mother and siblings. He will learn now to interact with his littermates and play and how to overcome his bite inhibition. In addition, he will learn to be disciplined while his mother weans him and teaches him dog manners, as also that she is the leader of the pack. At this stage, you can safely introduce him to food at the same time as the mother is weaning him. While his mother does her bit by her Pug puppies, you should not give up handling your pup every day, at least for 10 minutes at a time. It is best to leave newborns with their mother until seven weeks of age if not longer so that they are better socially developed. According to canine experts, the best time a pup can learn social skills is when he is between three and 16 weeks of age because anything he learns now contributes to making him a well-adjusted dog. So, leave him with his mother and siblings now for as long as possible. This is not the appropriate time for disciplining him if he is play-fighting or has housebreaking mistakes because this is a normal step in his growth. No harsh talk or loud voices either or even traumatic events. If you like, you could now begin to teach him simple commands such as come, sit, stay and down. Accustom him to using a leash now and take care not to keep him away from the rest of your family, as he must continue to learn social etiquette and behaviour that he will need for the rest of his life. At this stage, he will appear to be just a little more independent and might even start ignoring all the commands you taught him only recently. Take care, however, as he might just bite you or nip you in an attempt to challenge your power over him. He may interpret the former game as a sign of dominance, especially if he wins while with wrestling, things can get completely out of control. As your puppy grows in strength, he will want to play games of strength, perhaps even with you. He will no longer be keen to please you and will display cheeky behaviour. He will now begin teething and will search for things to chew on if only to relieve the pain and pressure. To help him through this period, give him frozen doggie bones. He may try to bully over other members of your family, especially children. If you shout out to him to come over to you, at this stage he will choose to ignore you. This can be a dangerous situation, because if he does this in a public place and runs away from you, he may meet with an accident and injure himself badly and even die. At this stage, he will also go through all the hormonal changes a teenage boy or girl would. He will now be sexually ready and may display a rebellious streak. This is the right time to have him neutered or spayed if you have a female. Though he is not seasoned and experienced in the ways of the dog world, you still need to treat him as you would an adult son or daughter. Be realistic about him and give him his freedom. You can do this by increasing the scope of his activities and his training. Give him advanced training sessions, if you choose, such as herding or agility training. There are some pretty interesting facts about these unique coats that you need to know before you get one for yourself. What Is a Brindle French Bulldog? While the French Bulldogs come in a variety of colors, the most striking ones are the ones with that special brindle coat. Brindle French bulldog has this dazzling pattern compared to a regular Frenchie. This brindle pattern is known for its darkness. The twisting stripe pattern of colors is so much darker than the typical base color of their coat, with a bit of a blend of lighter hair throughout the coat. However, the most common are the ones with darker and lighter colors, but there are other colors too with different features and mainly patterns. Brindle French Bulldogs This is the common coat color, with a darker coat with a mixture of lighter hair. Seal Brindle French Bulldogs The seal brindle is mostly comparable to a typical Brindle with a few white hairs; it mostly looks similar to a pure black french bulldog. Most of the time, the coat looks grey, though. Chocolate Brindle French Bulldogs Chocolate brindle, as the name suggests, has a chocolate brown color with a slight mixture of a milky color; they have blue eyes while the nose and nails are brown. Reverse Brindle French Bulldogs Reverse Brindles have white or cream color coats along with dark patches or even stripes. This one is considered to be much rarer than the others. Pied Brindle French Bulldogs Pied Brindles are almost similar to the reverse brindles when it comes to the coat colors; the difference comes from the dark patches. These are all the colors that you can expect in a brindle french bulldog. The brindled pattern comes from the genes, specifically the K-Locus gene, which is responsible for the fawn, dominant black, brindle colors. If the Frenchie needs to have a Brindled pattern, both its parents should have a recessive K gene. However, not every brindle pattern is the same; each one is different from one other; some may have the brindled patterns all over them while the other will have the pattern on specific areas. Size You might know that the French bulldogs are small-sized dogs, they only stand inches tall, and both males and females weigh 28 pounds 12kg on average. Grooming When it comes to grooming a Frenchie, it is one of the easiest dog breeds to do so mainly because of its short fine hair. If you want your Frenchies coat to look the part, you will have to bathe him 4to5 times every year, brush them with a stripping comb outside, and grooming mitt regularly. Temperament French Bulldogs are very social dogs and will get along with people, children, and even other pets very quickly. Training and Exercise Frenchies are considered to be stubborn and challenging to train, so you may have to train them earlier. But are they the classic Frenchie? Or are they different from their Frenchie brothers and sisters? Is it only their coat, or is there something else? And also answer the question of what makes this breed a good canine companion for us humans! The brindle color is actually one of the oldest in the Frenchies. It looks like tiger stripes. Usually, those streaks are lighter than their fur. So, they have light stripes that are almost a milky color, while their base coat is dark. This pattern looks quite interesting. But, where does the Brindle color come from? There are two pigments in dogs: eumelanin, which is the black color phaeomelanin, which is the red color Even though there are so many coat colors in dogs, all of them are a result of one of those pigments. But, how is it possible to get so many different colors? Both of those pigments can get diluted and changed by a dilution gene. So, that dilution gene can turn black into grey or dark brown. Those genes are lettered with the mutation found at the K locus, responsible. Now, there are three different gene variations at this locus gene. One of these gives a dog a black coat, so a dark coat. The second is a default option from one of the parents. And the third makes a dog brindle and the dog will get a Brindle coat. Purebred dogs Brindle Frenchies are purebred, unlike the Merle French Bulldog which we already talked about. So, they have all the characteristics of a French Bulldog and they are recognized by the American Kennel Club. Just like every other Frenchie, the Brindle is between 11 and 12 inches tall. The males weigh around 20 to 28 pounds. But, the females weigh a little less with 16 to 24 pounds. They have great personalities. They are loyal and loving. And a bit goofy. The Frenchie loves spending time with their family. Just cuddling and playing around. So, there is no difference between classic Frenchies and the Brindle Frenchie! Well, except the coat color. French Bulldogs, which were bred primarily as companion dogs, need a lot of love and affection from their family. They like playing with children and other dogs just as much as they enjoy sitting on the couch. These dogs are also goofy and make an easygoing companion for any dog lover. The Frenchie is extremely loving and devoted. This breed will thrive with an owner that spends a significant amount of time at home, such as if you work from home. Because Frenchies may be naughty, they require an owner who will be consistent, stern, and patient with them. Aside from that, they are quite intelligent and will learn rapidly. This is a clever, affectionate dog who desires and requires a lot of time with his owners. The French Bulldog, a fun-loving freethinker, responds well to training when it is done in a positive manner with lots of food rewards, praise, and play. You should also know that they have high exercise needs, so long walks and play sessions are a must with this breed. One important part of their personality is that they are a talkative breed. They will occasionally sing along with you in the car. The best example of this is Walter the Frenchie. So, does that mean they are more expensive? If you want a Brindle French Bulldog, you will have to pay more money. In fact, a lot more money. Yes, a very hefty price! But why is that? Why do they cost so much? French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed. Brachycephalic short-skulled dog breeds have usually very small litters. Generally speaking, French bulldogs will have on average around two or three puppies at a time. The instances where a French Bulldog had more than 5 puppies are very, very unusual. Breeders will take that into account too. Another reason why Frenchies are generally expensive is that most of them are born through artificial insemination. The dogs have difficulty copulating due to their odd dimensions. Males have a difficult time contacting females, and they frequently become hot and fatigued when attempting to initiate contact. As a result, artificial insemination is used to produce the vast majority of French bulldogs. While this step raises the cost of each litter of puppies, it also allows breeders to screen for any abnormalities throughout the breeding process. Health Brindle French Bulldogs cost more. But are they healthier than ordinary Frenchies? Given that they cost so much more, they should also be healthier, right? No, sadly Frenchies are known to have many health issues. And their price has nothing to do with that. Before you get a Frenchie you should know that they can get very sick. Your pooch might not get sick. But, you should be aware of these problems. That way you can recognize the symptoms. If your dog has any, of course. The reason why the French Bulldog is not the healthiest breed is that they are a Brachycephalic dog breed. Because of the way their skull is shaped, they are prone to more health issues than other breeds. This on the other hand makes them prone to difficult, obstructive breathing. That condition is also known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. Me What exactly is a Brindle French Bulldog? You can recognize a brindle French Bulldog by light irregular streaks all over their dark base coat. The color of the brindle pattern is usually a light shade of fawn, while the base coat may vary: the standard is black but other colors like blue, chocolate and lilac are also possible. Depending on the mixture of the dark and fawn hairs, Brindle Frenchies can be very dark or very light. They usually have a black nose and dark colored eyes. Brindle is by far the oldest and most common pattern in French Bulldogs. To this day, it is one of the few accepted colors and patterns by kennel clubs along with fawn, white and pied as opposed to blue, chocolate and lilac colors. The first one has to be their funny and lovable personality! Frenchies are without the doubt one of the most social and friendliest dog breeds, who are also very smart and easy to train. Not to mention their cuddles are the best! Black brindle Frenchie puppies may also have a white chest or other small areas of white. Depending on the amount of fawn hairs, these streaks may appear either all over their bodies or on certain areas only. Blue brindle Frenchies are much more common than solid blue Frenchies, in fact the brindle patterns may appear on a blue puppy later on as they age. Blue brindle Frenchies also tend to have a white chest or other small areas of white. Pied Brindle Frenchies look the same except for the light fawn brindle patterns in the colored patches, mostly on their back. The way the patches are distributed and the proportion of the white and the other color on the coat can be quite variable from Frenchie to Frenchie. Chocolate brindle French Bulldog Chocolate brindle French Bulldogs have a chocolate brown base coat with light fawn streaks all over their bodies. The chocolate gene is considered rare in the Frenchie world so these puppies are quite unique. Reverse brindle Frenchies are much harder to come by than brindle Frenchies. Tiger brindle French Bulldog As the name suggests, tiger brindle French Bulldogs have a heavy pattern of light fawn streaks all over their dark-colored bodies, resembling the coat of a tiger. Lilac brindle French Bulldog Lilac Frenchies usually have a solid light grey coat, but sometimes light streaks may appear on them producing a lilac brindle French Bulldog. These Frenchies are very unique as their parents have to be blue and chocolate, or at least a carrier of the rare chocolate gene. Do Brindle French Bulldogs Shed? Brindle French Bulldogs, like any other Frenchie tend to shed throughout the year, more so in the spring and fall. During this period, they change their coat almost completely, replacing it with shinier, brighter and nicer fur. It's important to brush your puppy's hair at least two or three times a week using a Furminator. That will remove the undercoat that has fallen out but is still in the hair. When looking for a brindle Frenchie, you will most likely come across cheaper offers than the prices detailed above. Make sure to do your research and get your brindle Frenchie from a reputable breeder, and you will have a happy and healthy furry family member for at least a decade.
