Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. What are Golden Retrievers bred for? Distinctly British, the 1st Baron of Tweedmouth developed the breed crossing his golden coloured retrieving dog Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel — these look similar to Irish Water Spaniels. The cross resulted in a dog that was comfortable being on land and water kind of like crocodiles , and robust enough to hunt goose, partridge and even deer. Do Golden Retrievers make good family pets? In fact, Golden Retrievers are one of the most loved dog breeds in the UK. The Kennel Club has a lot more good information and info about them. What does this have to do with how I train my Golden Retriever puppy? But there is a logic as to why knowing the context might help you train your Golden Retriever better: Golden Retrievers love to work. Commonly employed as Guide Dogs, they love having a job to do, which means they will adore training. Anyhow, they will be a breeze to train. They will also do almost anything for your soft words and approval — your praise will work just as well as treats. Because they are so gentle, they are a great fit for families with a variety of lifestyles and ages. They need a good amount of exercise; mental as well as physical. Let us rephrase — a hefty amount of exercise. Besides you and food, being in water is what they love the most! They have a very strong sense of smell, so retrieving or scent work games tend to be the biggest treat for most. Golden Retrievers are the social butterflies of dogs. They love most people, and are not discreet in showing it. You know how us Brits can be about politeness. That being said, make sure you also teach them the wonders of giving things up. It can lead to great things! But it can also be less helpful when they give you a love bite on your arm — give them a toy to carry instead. Shift to some play, and revisit training later — we want training to be associated with fun, and not something they begin to dread. Trooper is nearly a full 2 pounds lighter than his bro, Patriot. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Michigan? Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Apr 24, Share The German Shepherd is one of the most impressive and formidable dog breeds on the planet. After all, there are few things more terrifying than the sight of a ticked-off German Shepherd chasing down their quarry. All we have to do is step over them every time we need to get somewhere. Is it too much to ask in return that you keep it down and let them get a measly 23 hours of sleep? However, sometimes, on rare occasions, their self-control slips a little bit, and they find themselves — completely by accident — with their paws on the counter and your dinner in their mouth. Nothing Gets Past a German Shepherd One of the reasons that these dogs are so popular with police departments and the military is the fact that they see and hear everything. Nothing is too subtle to avoid detection — they could hear a cricket burp from yards away. They never heard a thing! Owners have reported chilling occurrences like trash cans tipping over, food disappearing from plates, and disembodied muddy paw prints on brand-new white carpet. They know this. They feel bad enough as it is. I mean, just look at those puppy dog eyes! They inspire fear, respect, and admiration everywhere they go, as there is no animal on the planet that would even think about messing with one. In fact, the breed only sheds once in their entire lifetime starting right after birth and continuing nonstop until death. That guy in your bedroom with the hockey mask and butcher knife may not get a second glance. However, for those who have spent any amount of time with a German Shepherd , the truth in these pictures is readily apparent. Will they laugh? Featured Image Credit: shelma25, Pixabay Contents. They are trainable, dependable, and loyal, which makes them both great family dogs and great working dogs. Like any other dog breed, the German Shepherd has their quirks though. However, many of these quirks could be either a positive or a negative quality depending on how you look at them. As a result it is crucial that you do your research on this breed before bringing a German Shepherd into your home. In this article we will be introducing you to 12 funny German Shepherd quirks. We will talk about these quirks in detail as well as giving you some helpful information about the German Shepherd breed. However, over the years this dog has been seen less often on the farm and more often as working with the police or being loving family pets. He admired the various types of herding dogs found throughout Germany, and he sought to create the best German herding dog out there. He first bred for a stable, trainable, and dependable temperament. He wanted a dog that was going to be protective and a hard worker, but is loving with children and the other members of their family. German Shepherd Temperament The ideal temperament of the German Shepherd is a dog that is gentle and calm with children and their families. However, they should also be confident, alert, and courageous. Here are 12 German Shepherd quirks that make the dog amazing and unique. The German Shepherd Head Tilt Many dogs can be seen tilting their heads, and many German Shepherd owners report that their dogs tend to tilt their heads very often. There are several different theories as to why dogs do this. Some believe that dogs tilt their heads so that they can hear something better, while others believe that dogs tilt their heads because they are trying to see something better. Regardless of what the cause may be, German Shepherds are known to tilt their heads, especially when their owners are talking to them. In fact, German Shepherds are known to whine a lot when they are either very happy or upset. These dogs sometimes also whine as a result of being excited and playful. To some this trait may be less than desirable, but to others this is just a quirky thing that makes their German Shepherd Dog unique. This combined with their good behavior around children can make these dogs great family pets. However, this also means that some German Shepherds can also be prone to developing separation anxiety. As a result, teaching your German Shepherd that it is ok to be left alone from an early age is recommended. They Have a Guarding Instinct All German Shepherds will have a natural guarding instinct, and this typically includes both your property, you, and the other members of your family. As a result of these instincts you may find your German Shepherd doing some funny things like laying in doorways and walking the perimeter of your yard. German Shepherds Are Very Intelligent The German Shepherd is an extremely intelligent dog, and this can be both a positive and a negative quirk. On the positive side of things, the German Shepherd responds very well to structured training, and they can be taught to do some pretty amazing things. As a result of their high intelligence and trainability, many German Shepherds are used as working dogs such as police dogs and service dogs for disabled people. The Zoomies German Shepherds have a lot of energy, and this pent up energy can sometimes result in them getting the zoomies. Most dog owners will likely be familiar with this term, as many dogs will get the zoomies when they are excited or need to get some energy out. In fact, German Shepherds are famous for running in circles when they get a case of the zoomies. They Need Consistency Many German Shepherds thrive when they are given consistent training and have a daily routine. This is because they are a very active and intelligent dog breed, so they need regular exercise and mental stimulation in order to be both healthy and happy. These things are best achieved when they have a daily routine. When it comes to training, most German Shepherds need direct, clear, and consistent commands. This clear communication coupled with positive reinforcement training methods will make your dog dependable and set them up for success. They Can be Mouthy German Shepherds can have a tendency to be mouthy, especially when they are puppies. This mostly includes play biting, but it can also be extended to other types of biting if a dog has not been properly trained or socialized. Teaching your German Shepherd not to bite from an early age is essential if you are looking to reduce this habit. German Shepherds Love Going on Adventures German Shepherds are naturally very curious dogs, and they love to sniff around and explore new places. As a result, the German Shepherd may be the right dog for you if you are looking for a companion to go out on adventures with. Well, they also need a firm but fair leader when it comes to their owners. In addition to this, some German Shepherds also have an aloof and more independent personality, so a lenient owner can lead to your dog getting into some trouble if you are lenient with your rules. They May Play Favorites Although German Shepherds do love all of the members of their families, they may pick favorites when it comes to the person that they listen to the best. This is usually the person that spends the most time with the dog or who has puit in the most work into training them. This can make having a German Shepherd a bit more difficult if multiple people will be working with this dog all of the time. German Shepherds Thrive when they have a Job German Shepherds were originally bred with the intention that they will be working dogs. Whether they are working on farms, working with the military, or working with the police these dogs are designed to have a job. However, this does not mean that they cannot make good family pets. They just need something to do during the day so that they do not get bored and get into trouble around the house. Having a job does not necessarily have to mean herding sheep though. You can do things like go through a training course, teach your dog agility training, or even take your dog with you for runs and these would be considered jobs. German Shepherd Behavior Stages Like any other dog, there are different behavior stages that a German Shepherd will go through as they age and grow. It is important to note that we will only be talking about the stages that most dog owners will experience in this article, so we will not be talking about any developmental stages that occur before 8 weeks of age. Here are the German Shepherd behavior stages and what every German Shepherd owner should know about each stage. The Socialization Stage months The socialization stage is the first German Shepherd behavior stage that dog owners will encounter, and it occurs between 4 and 12 weeks. In this stage it is crucial that dog owners introduce their German Shepherd puppy to new people, environments, and stimuli. During this stage you should always be taking your puppy with you to new places so they can experience a wide range of different things, and it is a good idea to get your German Shepherd puppy to play with other puppies and friendly adult dogs during this time as well. This will prevent your German Shepherd from being overly fearful or defensive in the future. This is also a good time to start some basic training. You can do this by teaching your German Shepherd some simple commands such as sit and lie down. This is also a great time to teach your dog his name. Of course, it is always recommended that you use positive reinforcement training methods when it comes to training German Shepherd puppies. The Juvenile Stage months During the Juvenile stage most German Shepherd puppies will start focusing more on exploring the world around them. This can often lead to dogs at this age becoming much more independent than they were during the socialization stage. This is a great time to make training a little more advanced, and teaching more complicated commands like heel is definitely a good idea. You may also want to start thinking about whether or not you will want to be spaying or neutering your dog at this time. This is because German Shepherds reach sexual maturity at the end of the Juvenile stage. The Adolescent Stage months The adolescent stage is that weird period between puppyhood and adulthood. Essentially, your dog is going through their teenage years during this time. Adulthood 18 months and up Once your German Shepherd reaches 18 months old they are officially considered to be an adult dog. At this point your German Shepherd should be mostly full grown and has completely reached mental maturity. The Senior Years 8 years and up Once a German Shepherd reaches 8 years old they are considered to be an elderly dog. At this point in their life they will likely start to slow down and spend more time lazing around the house. Conclusion German Shepherds make excellent family dogs when they receive enough training, exercise, and mental stimulation. Their quirks are truly what set this breed aside from others and make them unique. Related Questions Why does my German Shepherd talk so much? German shepherds are known to be extremely vocal dogs. This includes barking, whining, and other kinds of vocalizations. This stems from their working dog ancestors who used to bark to keep intruders away. German Shepherds are also known to make sounds when they are feeling very happy, excited, or unhappy as a way to express themselves. Why do German Shepherds sit on you? This is especially true if you have reinforced this behavior by giving your dog attention when he sits on you. In addition, sitting on you can also sometimes be a sign of separation anxiety if they do this all of the time. References Greenberg, Aurora. Staff, AKC. Battaglia, Dr. Stephanie Gibeault, MSc. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Puppies currently spoken for! Our litters are all currently spoken for. Our waiting list has extremely limited availability and will open for applications in the summer. Please review "Puppy Process" section below for details on getting on our wait list. Most families added to our waiting list wait an average of months for their puppy. If you would like to be considered for our waiting list, please complete our Puppy Application. While we cannot guarantee when your puppy selection will take place, your approved application and deposit reserves your opportunity to select your puppy based on your list position. For example, if 9th on our waiting list and we only had 8 puppies in our next litter, you would be bumped to the following litter. Be sure to follow along on the puppy blog for updates and photos of the puppies as they grow AND keep up with our plans for future litters. Our exceptions to this rule are simple. First, we always reserve right of first puppy for our family. This does not mean we will always keep first puppy, but that we do keep that as an option. Additionally, if show puppies are available, these puppies will be placed prior to pet puppy homes selection. Pet puppy selection generally takes place between weeks of age. Our puppies are ready for their forever homes at 8 weeks of age. First shots, de-worming, microchipping and lifetime enrollment in AKC Reunite, and more is included in the purchase price of your puppy. Do you offer a health guarantee? Your puppy also comes with a 2 year health guarantee read here , first set of shots, vet check and health letter, will be dewormed, and AKC limited registration paperwork. You will also receive copies of both parents pedigrees and OFA and genetic clearances, Where are you located? Nevada or Pennsylvania? Great question! We spent our first six years in Nevada, and the majority of our puppies live on the west coast. In late , we moved to Pennsylvania, and are officially relocating our business in summer .Our mentors, dog co-owners - and some of our most favorite people - live in SoCal and Las Vegas, and we make frequent trips to Vegas. We deliver puppies all over the country each year. If you are located on the west coast, you can meet us in Las Vegas to pickup your puppy from us there, or, continue reading below for our additional delivery options. If your puppy is flown, we will personally carry your pup into the cabin with us and deliver to you. If we drive your puppy to you generally if we have a large number of pups to deliver , you can rest assured knowing we have a partnership with GUNNER kennels, and all of our dogs and puppies are transported exclusively in GUNNER kennels. We are also able to work with you to provide you with GUNNER kennels at a discounted rate if you are interested in utilizing one for your personal puppy or dog transportation needs. Can I meet you, your dogs, or puppies? However, we only allow visitors by appointment. Only those who are on our waiting list are invited to help with puppy socialization we will contact you with times and opportunities. Anyone not on our wait list is welcome to meet us and our dogs outside of puppy visits. Please contact us to schedule a time. Can you deliver my puppy? If you are not able to pick up your puppy due to the distance, we can personally deliver your puppy to you anywhere that Southwest Airlines flies. We have found Southwest to be the most accommodating to bringing puppies into the cabin, and will not ship our dogs in baggage due to the potential trauma and health risks involved. Cost would be determined by distance from our location. Please contact us for additional information. Do you have an older dog available for adoption? We do not offer older puppies or any of our dogs displayed on this page for sale, as they are first and foremost our pets and members of our family. If you are looking for an older or trained golden, we recommend Shadalane Golden Retrievers in Vista, California. Also, please understand that we are not a rescue. How long do I have to wait for my puppy? Our waiting list fills very quickly! Many of our families wait years for their furever friend, though we sometimes have earlier availability. This time frame fluctuates depending on how many litters we have each year, and how many puppies are born in those litters. Can I get full AKC registration for my puppy? However, your puppy is not to be used for breeding and any litters they produced in violation of our contract would not be AKC registerable. What health testing do my puppy's parents have? All of our puppy parents have OFA clearances on their hips, elbows, eyes, and hearts. You can find the links to their test results on their individual pages. You can view the results of our testing from Paw Print Genetics via the links in our dogs individual profile pages. Do I get to pick my puppy or do you pick for me? Puppies are selected in the order in which deposits are received which directly corresponds to your waiting list position. The exceptions to this rule are 1 if our family or our stud owner are opting to keep first puppy, and 2 if any puppies are being placed in show homes. Leading up to puppy selection day, we will provide you with information on each of the puppy's personalities in the litter, what shade of gold we anticipate they will grow up to be, etc. At the end of the day however, you pick your puppy. We do not assign puppies to families. The choice is yours! What payment methods do you accept? If we receive a deposit without an application , it will be rejected or refused and returned to you, which will delay your addition to our waiting list. Personal checks require a copy of your driver's license and cash will be run through a scanner. Please don't take offense - scammers are out there! They charge a minimal fee to utilize their payment service. Zelle is a free, bank-to-bank direct payment service, similar to Venmo or Paypal. That said, your puppy must be completely paid off prior to being picked up at 8 weeks old. I have a question that isn't answered here! Please contact us with any questions you may have that are not answered here! We will do our best to respond within 2 business days. Around holidays, when we have a litter of newborn pups, and when we are out showing, it sometimes takes us days to respond. We appreciate your patience! Application Complete your puppy application. We will review your application within 5 business days and if your application is approved, you will be invited to place your deposit. Most families will wait an average of years for their puppy, though we sometimes have earlier availability. Payments can be made via GoodDog , Zelle, or check. Pupdates Once your application has been approved and your deposit has been received, you will be added to our email list for "pupdates" on anticipated breedings and upcoming litters. Follow us on Facebook , Instagram and YouTube for even more updates! Pups Arrival Once puppies have arrived, you will be given access to our 'Puppy Cam" for regular viewing of your pup's growth and development for eight weeks. Socialization Your puppy will be regularly handled by both children and adults of all ages. They will be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, toys and stimulation to help them grow into confident adults. Our puppies socialize with our older dogs each day, and weather permitting, will be exposed to water and swimming. Puppy Selection There will generally be two opportunities for you to interact in-person with your puppy's litter. The second visit, around weeks, will be your opportunity to select your puppy. If you are unable to attend our in-person socialization days, we can arrange a Facebook or Zoom call for you to meet your puppy! Furever Home Your puppy will be ready to go home at 8 weeks of age. Family Our pups come with more than just a 2 year health guarantee and seller's contract. When you take home one of our puppies, you become part of the Liberty Golden Retrievers family. We are always available to answer any questions you may have and would love to interact with your pup as it grows up; we hope you'll send us lots of pictures, too! You make it seem like puppy ownership is as simple and trouble-free as the world presented in cute puppy pictures. We can all agree that, at birth, all puppies are too adorable for words. We can also agree that raising puppies is a weighty responsibility, and never one to be undertaken lightly. Boxer puppies are not special in this regard. Lhasa Pug Description The Pughasa is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Lhasa Apso and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He's a Pughasa—his mom was the Lhasa and his dad a black Pug. Deuce is smart, funny and has a very cuddly disposition. He's very loyal, has fun socializing with other dogs and going to the doggy day spa to be pampered. Deuce enjoys his walks and potty trained very well. We got him at 4 weeks and he was trained in the first few days!! We definitely look forward to having another one someday! She also has her own jacket. She likes to cruise around the neighborhood and show off to her friends. Fergie is a true performer and loves attention. At almost 1 year old, she has grown to a pound fun-loving princess. She has the personality of her daddy Pug along with his stocky build. She has the hair of her mommy Lhasa Apso and her sweet disposition. This is definitely a wonderful mix. The Lhatese brings together many welcome qualities in this sweet pup, making them suitable for first-time pet owners. The Maltese is a bit less energetic than the Lhasa Apso. The former is adaptable yet just as sensitive as the latter. This pup will put a smile on your face with their antics. The former also tames the independence of the latter, making them more open to meeting strangers and sharing their love. The Shih Tzu brings more affection and friendliness to the mix. They also have less of a tendency to bark, which apartment dwellers will appreciate. They also ramp up the prey drive and wanderlust potential, given their history as a hunting dog. This pup is also more likely to howl or bark. Nevertheless, the easygoing nature of the Be Apso makes them worth a look for a family pet. This hybrid may shed, in contrast with the low-shedding Lhasa Apso. This hybrid is more active and tolerant of being alone. However, regular walks are essential to avoid weight gain. Their all-around friendliness is on a par with the Lhasa Apso for an affectionate family pet. The Bosapso is also a pup that wants to make friends with everyone, people and dogs. This pup is more dog-friendly. They bring the intensity of a terrier, always willing to play. This pup would rather cuddle on the couch with you. This pooch has a higher potential for weight gain, which makes their love of play a wonderful thing. The Chi Apso is a smaller dog that is an ideal balance between the weights and body shapes of their parent breeds. They like to play, even though they would rather cuddle. The combination puts their watchdog ability on hyper-drive. Despite the tough-guy image of the Scottish Terrier , this hybrid is a softie at heart. The hunter in the Scottie makes them inclined to explore their world, which is something a pet owner needs to know up front. S lhasapoo The Lhasa-Poo is an excellent choice for families looking for an affectionate, low-shedding dog. The Poodle is an intelligent pooch that makes training a bit easier with a pup that is eager to please. Their addition to the Dachsi Apso brings a laid back attitude to the mix. The Yorkie builds on the affectionate nature of the Lhasa Apso with a bit more feistiness that is hard to resist, given their adorable looks. They are a born companion animal , from their big brown eyes to their endless pool of love. The essential thing to remember with this sweetheart is not to overfeed them, no matter how cute they look begging for another treat. If a Lhasa Apso Mix takes after their Lhasa Apso parent, they will be a small, affectionate companion dog. They thrive on attention and tend to have big personalities. The Lhasa Apso is an intelligent dog with a lot of confidence and a big personality with a comical twist. Because they love attention, they sometimes do comedic and silly things to get it. In addition to amusing their families, they also love to cuddle and spend time around them. These little dogs tend to get along well with children and other pets. They tend to be more reserved with strangers, but will warm up once introduced. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a similar temperament from a Lhasa Apso Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for her pups. Lhasa Apsos are highly adaptable dogs that do well in apartments as well as larger homes. They are sensitive to heat and very cold temperatures. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and can be prone to developing separation anxiety. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect a Lhasa Apso Mix to be as well. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed because they will introduce their own quirks that you will want to be aware of. From the Lhasa Apso side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Lhasa Apso Mix include cherry eye, dry eye, kidney dysfunction, progressive retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Lhasa Apsos are intelligent dogs. They pick up on things quickly, which makes them highly trainable. But, they tend to be eager to please when it suits them and they can have a stubborn streak. This can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners. The other parent breed could make a Lhasa Apso Mix easier or more difficult to train. There are also many benefits of puppy training classes aside from training, so they tend to be a good idea anyway. A Lhasa Apso Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both of them. A long clip needs daily brushing, bathing every two weeks, and grooming every weeks. Your dog groomer will be able to help take care of some of this during visits, but you will still need to do maintenance between visits at home. Cutting nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Daily brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste and cleanings at the vet as needed helps prevent dental diseases later in life. Lhasa Apsos sit in a moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some extra activities throughout the day are usually enough for them. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they are not overheating or overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you and be prepared to carry them if you need to. If the other parent breed also sits in a moderate activity range, then you can expect the same from a Lhasa Apso Mix. If the other parent breed is lower or higher energy, then you will need to be prepared for that potential in a mix. Fully-grown Lhasa Apsos usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. A Lhasa Apso generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a Lhasa Apso Mix. Currently, we do not have any Lhasa Apso Mix puppies available, but we can alert you when new Lhasa Apso Mix puppies are available! Just enter your email address and click submit! The most common reason why your Golden Retriever has short hair is age. Golden Retriever puppies start out with short hair and grow into their adult coats by the age of two. Other factors that affect your Golden Retrievers coat length include genetics, diet, health, spay and neuter, and breed variation. Short-haired Golden Retrievers do not exist, however, a field Golden Retriever is one type of Golden that typically has a shorter coat. It takes up to two years for your Golden Retriever to have his full adult coat. Golden Retrievers have feathering along their tail, legs, and belly. The speed at which your Golden Retriever grows his adult coat is determined by genetics. The length of hair on your Golden Retriever is a result of a recessive genetic mutation in the FGF5 gene. Well, chances are your pup could either have a longer coat or a shorter coat. Diet Affects Overall Coat Length And Condition The saying you are what you eat is true for us humans, and certainly for our canine companions as well. A Golden Retriever fed a poor diet that lacks essential nutrients will not only show its effects on his health, but you will notice it in his coat. The coat will be dull, and brittle, cause excess shedding, and will likely be thin and patchy, making it appear shorter in length. A proper nutritionally balanced diet will result in a healthy, shiny lustrous coat. Great sources include fish oil, coconut oil, and olive oil. Also, sardines, tuna and salmon. Eggs are great for skin and coat health as they contain zinc, lutein, and biotin. Oats support healthy skin and hair. Liver from grass-fed animals contains tons of nutrients essential for skin health. Sweet potatoes are considered a super-food for the skin. Sweet potatoes help to accelerate healing and support collagen production. A healthy coat that is shiny and strong starts from the inside. Allergies Allergies are pretty common in Golden Retrievers. Both environmental and food-related. All of that scratching, licking and chewing affects the hair on your Golden Retriever. Hormonal Imbalance A hormonal imbalance such as Hypothyroidism can cause your Golden Retriever to lose his hair. It is more common in dogs 6 years or older. One of the symptoms of this health condition is hair loss. Other signs to watch out for include increased eating, drinking, urinating, and panting. Also, a pot-bellied appearance. Parasites Parasites such as fleas and mites cause your Golden Retriever to itch and scratch, which in turn causes hair loss. Bacterial And Fungal Skin Infections Bacterial and fungal skin infections cause hair loss, redness, and irritation of the skin. Ringworm is a fungal infection, not an actual worm, that results in hair loss in dogs. Stress can cause excessive shedding, as well as result in poor coat condition. Spay Coat is a term often used by groomers and dog owners to describe the change in coat texture and appearance in altered dogs. It commonly occurs in Golden Retrievers but can affect other breeds as well, such as Rough Collies, and Irish Setters. The coat becomes thicker, softer and more woolly in texture. Many owners describe the coat as fuzzier, and hard to manage. Spay Coat is discussed in the Golden Retriever Forum. One such variation is the Field Golden Retriever. A Field Golden is bred for field work such as hunting and retrieving game. Field Goldens are intelligent, obedient, and very athletic. Two ways that you can tell if you have a Field Golden is by the colour of their coat, dark golden to almost red, and a shorter coat length. Field Golden Retrievers also tend to be slimmer and smaller than other types of Golden Retrievers. In terms of shedding, Field Goldens tend to have less volume of hair, so shedding is not as extreme, however, they still shed! Even though a Field Golden Retriever has a shorter coat, it will still have feathering along the belly, tail, and legs. A Labrador does not have any feathering. Can you turn your long-haired Golden Retriever into a short-haired one? The only areas that ever need trimming include the feet, tail, bum area, and ears. Bathe Regularly: Bathing removes dirt and debris as well as loose hair, keeping the coat clean and healthy to stimulate hair growth. Rule Out Medical Issues: If you notice any significant hair loss or lack of hair growth, be sure to visit your vet to rule out any medical issues. This short video lists the 5 foods that you should feed your dog for healthy hair, most of which we already talked about. Sorry, the video is a bit robotic, but it gets the point across Final Thoughts Purebred Golden Retrievers do not have short hair, but some may have shorter hair than the average Golden. A Field Golden Retriever is one variation within the breed that typically has a shorter-length coat. Genetics determines the length of hair that your Golden Retriever will have. A few other common reasons why your Golden Retriever has short hair is that he has not grown his adult coat yet, which can take up to the age of 2, underlying health issues that cause hair loss, and not feeding a high-quality diet. Chances are if you have spotted a Golden Retriever with short hair, they have likely been groomed short, or the dog is a mixed breed. Does your Golden Retriever have shorter hair than the average Golden Retriever? Share your thoughts and comments below. I would love to hear from you! Jenny I am the proud owner of a Golden Retriever named Ellie. She keeps me busy, and when she is resting, you can find me working on my blog. She is always close by though. I live in Stirling, ON Canada with my husband, and we both enjoy the never a dull moment life with our Ellie. Spread the love. Looking to get a short-haired golden retriever? Well, you might be looking for a long time… Technically, short-haired golden retrievers do not exist, however, some goldens do have shorter hair than others. Some types of goldens, like field golden retrievers, typically have shorter hair than other types, such as those bred for shows. And although you might be tempted to turn your regular golden retriever into a short-haired golden by giving them a haircut, that could actually put their health in jeopardy, as well as ruin their beautiful coats. There is only one breed of golden retriever, but there are several different variations within the breed. One of those variations is the field golden retriever, also known as the field bred golden retriever. These goldens are bred for hunting and working in the field. They also tend to be darker in color , even red. And, relevant to this article, their coats tend to be shorter. On the other hand, you have golden retrievers bred for show. Whereas field goldens are bred for their personality, athleticism, and drive, show golden retrievers are bred for their temperament and looks. But all that being said, companion goldens dogs not bred specifically for work in the field or shows can have shorter coats, too, if you know how to find them… How To Get A Golden Retriever With A Shorter Coat When my golden retriever, Oliver, was about six months old, I started to get a little worried. Was he a short-hair golden retriever? Check out the video below to see his adorable, short-haired lankiness. Now where did he get his shorter coat? From his parents, of course! Of course, when choosing a breeder you need to consider more than just coat length, but you can learn more about choosing a breeder here. Goldens grow very fast and reach their full height at about a year. So if you see someone walking down the street with a beautiful golden sporting a short coat, know that unless the golden was over a year and a half old, chances are their coat might grow a little longer. Most people are allergic to dander flakes of dead skin , and possibly the saliva and urine according to WebMD. Although I got lucky with Oliver, most goldens shed a lot. Of course, dogs with longer coats tend to shed more heavily , which often leads potential dog owners to consider alternatives. One such option that is often the subject of debate is the short haired Golden Retriever. Although many people will say they saw these dogs, others claim that it is simply not possible for the Golden Retriever to have short hair. This breed is one of the ten most popular dog breeds globally besides German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Bulldog, Boxer, etc. Their hair may be wavy or straight, depending on the genes. The thicker feathers remain mostly on the chest, thighs, belly, and tail. There are three common colours found in pure Golden Retrievers: light golden, golden, and dark golden. In general, their colors may be a little brighter or darker than the standard ones, but they are still on the list of pure dog breeds. You may see a strange Golden Retriever with a black coat sometimes. Usually, Golden Retrievers are preferred by those who love vigorous exercises. He enjoys swimming, too. Long coats are common in this breed, causing a moment of pause when someone comes across a Goldie with a shorter coat. While the existence of a short-haired Golden retriever is not impossible, it is often suggested that such characteristics reflect the fact that a Golden retriever is not purebred or that dog lovers do not recognize the characteristics of a different breed. Yet many Goldie lovers say with certainty that their fuzzy friend is indeed a Golden retriever with a short coat. The American Kennel Club has never recognized the possibility of a short-haired Golden retriever. This is not unusual, as it is worth noting that the club also does not recognize different coat colors or patterns of specific breed types, such as brindle variations. Since the AKC does not attribute short hair or shorter coat lengths to the overall breed of Golden Retrievers, it is impossible to recognize short-haired counterparts because these dogs are not purebred according to the standards of the kennel club. This is not to say that short-haired Goldies do not exist at all, but rather, they are simply not recognized as a type of Golden retriever by purebred criteria. A lot of bad guys out there are willing to cheat on you for money. The dogs you get can be a mixture of a Golden Retriever and a different breed. Features that allow us to distinguish them are just the length and color of the coat. You may be asked to take a test kit to identify the breed of your dogs. Until then, everything will be clear. In general, there are four main breeds of dogs used to cross the Golden Retriever. Chesapeake Bay Retriever: The mixture of this breed and Golden Retriever may have half-curly and half-straight or wavy hair with abnormal colors. Curly Coated Retriever: The mixture of this breed and Golden Retriever may have half-curly and half-straight or wavy hair of a black or liver color. Labrador Retriever: The mixture of this breed and Golden Retriever may have short black, chocolate, or yellow hair. Flat-coated Retriever: the mixture of this breed and Golden Retriever may have long black or liver hair. As has been said, Golden Retrievers belong to the long hair breed because they have a very long and dense coat. However, there is nothing to ask all the Golden Retrievers to have this feature. Some Golden Retrievers can be found with short hair, but they are confirmed to be the standard one when they are tested. In these cases, they have the key in their genes. They may have some genetic variation that makes them a short-haired coat compared to the same dog breed. However, you must know that this is a very rare case. They Could Be Another Breed. So you can be cheated, or you can get the wrong dog breed. Labrador Retriever First and foremost, despite being part of the same Retriever, the Labrador has very short hair. They have three official colors: yellow, chocolate, and black. There are also fox red and polar white colors, but they are not recognized as pure. The Labrador is heavier than the Golden 65 to 80 pounds 55 to 75 pounds. The Labrador has a life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years, almost the same as the Golden 10 to 13 years. One more thing you can see is that despite having short hair, the Labrador has shed a lot of hair all year round, while the Golden has just shed a small amount of hair in a season. Flat-coated retrievers This breed is similar to the Golden in that it has a dense, thick coat, but its fur is always flat, not waved like the Golden. Besides, their coat is not water-repellent. This breed has three main colors of coat: black, liver, and blonde. The blonde color makes them look more like the Golden One. Flat-Coated Retriever is a little less active than the Golden Retriever. Rarely do they make such a noise. However, like the Golden Retriever, they need to exercise every day at least an hour a day. The life expectancy of this breed is quite short, only about 8 to 10 years. This breed is similar to the Golden in that it has a dense, thick coat, but its fur is always flat, not waved like the Golden. Short Haired Golden Retriever: Misidentified? Having admitted that there are instances where one might misidentify their dog like a Golden Retriever or potentially invest in what they thought was a purebred Goldie, you may be wondering if your pupa was misidentified. Veterinarians have undergone many years of rigorous study to understand and care for your dog. Suppose you are skeptical as to whether your short-haired Golden retriever is a Goldie at all. In that case, you can certainly reach out to the veterinarian for an examination and a second opinion. Most veterinarians are great at identifying dog breeds and can usually clear all suspicions about whether crossbreeding has occurred. Another potential option that is increasing in popularity is dog DNA testing. Some vets offer these tests in their offices and may even recommend them after the test if you are still uncertain. These tests are often used to check whether or not Goldie is a purebred pupa. Golden retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs due to their loving, playful, and friendly nature. Their strikingly beautiful golden coat is flowing along with them. The coats are fluffy when they are puppies, but the hair grows long and shiny over time. So when are the golden retrievers growing long hair? If the parents of the puppy have taken a long time to grow the coat, the chances of the puppy taking a long time are increased. It starts from the tail and travels to the head of the body in a gradual process. Most breeds shed the fur of the puppy, but the golden retrievers do not. With time, the undercoat begins to grow thicker as the longer outer coat grows. This whole process takes about 18 months to develop until you have a gorgeous golden retriever with long hair. This will give you and the dog two main benefits. First, the puppy will be used to grooming to make it easier to do as they grow. Second, golden retrievers with long hair are heavy sheds. Brushing The first step in the grooming process is to brush the dog with an appropriate dog brush. Make sure there is no matted fur on the body at the end of the brushing. Start by focusing on the mats in the fur. Work your way up to the skin, gently brushing your mats loose. If the mats are too tangled to be combed or brushed, you can use a pair of sharp scissors to cut them out. Final Words No short-haired Golden Retriever is officially recognized. If you are interested in finding the most accurate answer to this problem, we recommend that you come to a vet. Whether due to genetics, crossbreeding, or misidentification, shorter hair combined with traditional Golden retriever features presents a unique appearance that garners widespread curiosity among dog lovers. If you have a true Goldie with this characteristic, your canine companion is considered rare! Golden Retrievers are an impressive breed, as any Golden lover knows. On the other hand, dog lovers give a beautiful haircut to their golden Retrievers to turn them into short-haired dogs. However, it is dangerous for their health. Also, hair cut may ruin their gorgeous coats. One must know about the other types of Golden dogs to understand better their short-haired story. Short-haired field golden retriever has different variations. This particular variation is also called field-bred golden retriever. Mainly, this was bred for hunting and working tasks in the field. Golden Retriever Coats Golden retrievers are unique among dog breeds since they have a double coat. As the name suggests, their coats are made up of two parts. The first part is the undercoat, which is a layer of short, dense hair. This helps keep the dog warm and dry. But our interest lies in the topcoat, which is made up of medium-to-long hair. On average, it takes three months for the topcoat to appear on a golden retriever puppy. However, it takes more than a year before the topcoat fully grows out. So, how is this different from the short-haired golden retriever and its coat? Finally, the part we have been waiting to dissect. It all depends on what a particular golden retriever was bred for. Field golden retrievers , for example, are bred for field work in general, especially hunting, or more specifically, retrieving game. As a result, they are intelligent, obedient, and athletic. They also have shorter topcoats when compared to goldens bred for show. On the other hand, show retrievers are bred for looks. As a result, they tend to have long, flowy coats. If you are in doubt about the ancestry of your retriever, a DNA test at your vet will set matters to rest. On that note, purebred goldens inherit short coats from their parents. Since hair length is hereditary, tracing the ancestry of your golden is another sure way to find out if your short-haired golden retriever puppy is purebred. Common retriever breeds to watch out for include. Curly-Coated Retriever: A curly-coated retriever stands out thanks to its mane of tight, flowing curls. Curly-retrievers are also taller than other retrievers and can have coats ranging from black to silver. Flat-Coated Retriever: This breed can be easily identified by its signature long, flat hair. Chesapeake Bay Retriever: This breed also has a short and wavy coat. Crossing with this breed produces offspring with longer, wavy coats. This mutation occurs in the FGF5 gene, which controls the hair cycle and length on your golden. The topcoat will only grow to lengths that this gene allows. Make sure to feed your retriever with foods rich in fatty acids such as Omega.Such acids strengthen hair follicles, in turn allowing the growth of long, healthy coats. On average, retrievers take about a year and a half to grow fully mature coats. Starting from the tail, long hair grows gradually over their bodies, moving up to the head. This feathery fur grows primarily on the legs, tail, chest, and stomach. Note that the longer coat grows through the baby fur over a period that can last 18 months. Not only does the coat lose its healthy sheen, but your retriever might also start shedding its hair at an alarming rate. To add to this, diseases such as alopecia cause hair loss in dogs. The effects of such a disease might initially convince you that your golden is a short-hair breed. You can avoid this through regular checkups at the vet Grooming Blunders Not knowing how to properly groom your retriever can severely damage its coat. What many newcomers overlook is regular brushing and de-shedding. With regular brushing, you remove tangles and loose hair, allowing proper hair growth. De-shedding is done with a special de-shedding tool. Using it, you can safely remove loose hair and mats from lower levels of fur. This leeches essential oils from their hair and skin. The result? A dull long coat lacking luster. Finally, only use high-quality moisturizing dog shampoo when you do have to wash your retriever. As you know, hot and dry air dries out the skin and hair follicles. This causes excessive shedding as the dry hair falls out at a faster rate. As you can guess, fewer hairs as a result of the shedding might lead you to believe your golden has a short coat. There are steps you can take to prevent excessive shedding in hot areas. They include: Regular grooming and baths. For this reason, a lot of people are completely shocked at the thought of a short-haired Golden Retriever. Most Golden Retrievers have long coats. There are a couple of factors that could influence the length of that coat, so you could find Golden Retrievers with shorter hair than your regular Golden Retriever. These are six factors that can influence the length of a Golden Retrievers coat. If any of these factors are present in a Golden Retriever, then this dog could have a shorter coat than a regular Golden Retriever. Presence of the FGF5 gene which stop the hairs on a dog from growing Golden Retrievers aged under 2 years. Their coat length is not fully matured. Excessively hot or dry weather can dry out dog hair causing hair to fall off your Golden Retriever. Certain health conditions can cause hair loss in Golden Retrievers. Poor grooming can also lead to shorter coats than normal. It will influence how long it is possible for the hair to keep growing before the gene sends a signal to make it stop. Long hair is a recessive trait in dogs. This means the genetic coding for the long silky coat in a Golden Retriever needs to be inherited from both parents. The longer adult coats tend to start coming in when your dog gets to three months of age. At first, your Golden will begin to grow feathered hair around the tail, and then the fur starts to grow over the rest of the body. The tail is usually the starting point though. Eventually, the fur will start growing longer towards the head too. A Golden can sometimes begin to grow the feathers on the tail when they reach 3 months old. Sometimes though the feathers will grow much later in life. Not only that, but gender can also come into play since males and females can grow their fur at different speeds. This is because the hair follicles will be much stronger meaning that the hairs can grow longer. Hair falling out can lead to a perception that the hair is shorter, though in reality they just have less hair in a certain area. This will help to keep their coat in better condition and will be good for their wellbeing. In some bad situations, health conditions can result in hair loss for your dog. Sometimes dogs may even lose their hair in clumps. Poor grooming As a new dog owner, you will likely have been told how important it is to groom your dog, especially when it comes to Goldens that traditionally have long hair. Shaving is the worst mistake that you can possibly make with your Golden Retriever. If you shave your Golden Retriever then it can result in some nasty, long-lasting damage to the coat. As a result, the coat may end up never growing back as it did before. If it does grow back then it may result in the fur being much rougher and shorter than it was previously. If your dog does need to be shaved, then you should not do it yourself — you should instead make sure that it is done by a medical professional. Just as there are different colors of Golden Retrievers , there are also different types of goldens, that is, those bred for working and hunting vs. The type of Golden is another factor that influences the length of their coat. Field Golden Retrievers You will usually find that the goldens with the shortest fur are the field Golden Retrievers. These are the ones that come from a long history of working and hunting dogs. Compared to show dogs, working dogs have been bred for practicality, not just for how they look. This is mainly thanks to the fact that breeders will usually mate two long-haired Goldens to create even more long-haired goldens. Show dogs have been bred purely for the sake of appearance, and this is mainly why their coats look a lot longer than the coats of field dogs. There are some ways that you can do this. If the above action is not an option then you can also conduct a DNA test on your dog. It can be very helpful to do both of these things just to double-check.
