Testimonials "We wanted a sister for our 6 year old GSD, Katja, she had just lost her favorite kitty Tattoo, who was 33 years old. I then started researching GSD Breeders in our area. I researched them thoroughly. From the moment Bobbi and I spoke on the phone I knew this was the perfect fit, she sent us pics of her mom n dad and pics of Zasha. All of the parents history, health records, vet checks, AKC certification and verification. We called a handful breeders and met with a couple and were saddened and discouraged. She cared, she asked tons of questions, wanted us on speaker phone to get a feel of our family. You could tell her dogs and puppies were her family just as much as any human. Bobbie encouraged us to talk it over, call her back with any questions and we were welcome anytime for a visit. We did call back with questions and planned a visit the next Saturday as they live 3 hours from us. I have never been greeted into a strangers home so warmly. All her dogs are amazing, loving, smart, beautiful and tested. Justin brought his girl Kimber home and we remained in touch by sending photos, messages and her checking in. Fast forward 1. He said to me "Mom, come on - it's Bobbie! If she's home, I bet she'd love it" so I sent a quick message and immediately she said "yes! It was intended as a short visit but we were having a nice time and Kimber and our lab were having so much fun playing with her dogs that we took much of their afternoon. She had a 5 month old puppy that we all feel in love with for her goofiness and loving manner. Sounded as though all would be fine in time but Bobbie wouldn't take that chance in case she needed extra medical care in her future etc so she gave the person who had a deposit on this girl her pick of the litter instead. Over the next 4 months she was monitored and vet checked and released with a clean bill of health. We are a busy house with 2 of Bobbie's German Shepherds, a lab and a yorkie but always try to take moments to send Bobbie updates of their antics and spoiling. I can tell you in our hunt we did not come across anyone as dedicated, responsible, committed or loving with her dogs than Bobbie and we can't leave her children or Mike out - they too were there every visit and very engaged and supportive with the dogs. Much love, " - Michelle Evjen-Freed and family Bobbie is wonderful lady, who deeply cares about her dogs. All her dogs is absolutely stunning, well behaved. I'm mom of her 2 gorgeous German Shepherds. Bobbie is very honest and responsible breeder. I love Bobbie and highly recommend her!! Julia Goudie.

Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Read more : Choosing the Best Collar and Harness for a Pug Grooming supplies — The thick coat of a Pug sheds heavily and brushing it well and offering baths on a regular basis can help control shedding. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! Punk and Star Photo courtesy of The Kuney's If you have had your Pug for a while, it may be hard to believe that your 12 year old dog is the equivalent age of 59 human years; however this is a guideline that refers to the breakdown of the body's ability to fend off disease, level of exercise a dog is able to handle and so forth. An owner can have a Pug in this teens that still loves to run around the park! Let's look at the milestones that a Pug will enter from birth until the senior years. Birth to 8 Weeks - Many owners do not see this stage, however newborn Pug puppies double and triple their weight very quickly. Newborns will sleep up to 22 hours per day. Those at the 8 week mark will sleep up to .Growth is going to be rapid. It will last several months. Females will have their first heat if not spayed. Males will have viable sperm. Though technically a female can become pregnant at this young age, breeding is recommended at the age of 1 year old or older. Males should be at least 9 months old. Some Pug puppies will stop growing by the age of 9 months. For others, just a few pounds will be gained from now until the 12 month mark. By the time, full height is usually reached. The adult Pug will fill out in width, most noticeable in the chest area. The dog is muscular and will not grow any larger. Extra weight gain at this point may be deemed unhealthy. Pugs that gain a significant amount of weight after the age of 18 months should be checked out by the veterinarian. The Pug dog is muscular and in his or her prime. Most vets will classify a dog as a senior by age 7 or 8. Even if this is not officially done, 9 years would be the limit that one could hold off on dubbing the Pug a senior. Pug Weight and Growth Chart This chart will give you a guideline for what to expect in how fast your Pug grows and how quickly he will gain weight. An 8 week old Pug puppy will weight between 2 and 4 pounds. Though the AKC breed standard gives us a final full size of pounds 5. It's a funny thing because the changes happen gradually and owners usually do not notice. And then, one day it reaches a certain point and the owner will say, "When did my dog get old!? Your dog may show a bit of difficulty when rising from a down position. He or she may walk slower up a staircase. A quality canine mattress is recommended for any age, however during the senior years an orthopedic canine bed is more important than ever. Expect an older Pug dog to take more naps and retreat more often due to a lower tolerance for noise levels. When your dog reaches the age of 8 or 9, it will be time to give a bit more attention to certain grooming techniques. Skin looses its elasticity and cleaning wrinkles will be more important than ever. An older Pug will be more susceptible to infections. Take extra time to clean the folds and keep them dry. Your Pug's veterinarian should be performing more thorough tests, especially for sugar levels. Eye exams are very important, as well. Just as with humans, an older Pug may be more susceptible to developing diabetes, arthritis , have problems with joints and their bones may be more brittle. The pounds that they have been carrying around and the body structure that they have short legs especially have been taking its toll. At this age, excess weight be a problem. It is recommended to make a gradual change in the diet, to ensure that meals have a higher count of nutrients specifically for aging pets. If you previously gave no-so-healthy snacks, make an effort to change over to a solid, healthy meal and snack plan. It will be time to make a change in regard to a vitamin and mineral supplement, switching to a senior formula. Additional supplements can be helpful depending on a Pug's specific needs. Most often, this breed does best with supplements to aid in joint health. Omega 3 can help to keep the skin and coat healthy and combat drying issues. The intensity of exercise should be scaled back a bit for seniors ; though daily duration of activity should remain as normal if the older Pug can handle it. It is still important go for walks so that a dog's heart stays healthy; movement is very necessary. However, once your Pug dog is a senior, you do not want to overdo activities as an older heart will not be able to handle what a younger heart was able to. It is during this time that you want to make the household as quite and peaceful as possible. Unless you absolutely must, do not move your furniture or make any changes that could cause stress or confusion. Creatures of habit, dogs know where things are and it can be disturbing if the environment is changed. The ability to hold elimination may weaken as bladder and bowel muscle loose some strength. At this time, you may want to start using doggie diapers. As odd as they may look, this will help your Pug and your home stay sanitary. If your senior does have accidents, never scold or punish. This is a normal process of aging. A loving owner, will of course, want to spend every moment that is left by showing compassion and care. All rights reserved. Since I was little and running around the playground with my friends, I've wanted to welcome a pug into my life. A friendly, happy puppy who will be my fur baby for existence. This was only a dream until that day. While I thought Carl was at work, someone knocked on my door, extremely loud and quite aggressively. So I rushed down the stairs thinking what the actual hell that person think knocking on people's door like that I will tell him what I think. When I opened the door, Carl was standing there with this little tiny pug in his arms tucked in nicely and looked so cosy in that blanket. I got pretty emotional. I was so overwhelmed with happiness and love for both of them that I quickly forgot about telling him off for knocking so damn harsh. Carl handed him over to me he was just staring at me for so long with his big bulging eyes then he gave me a big wet kiss on my cheek. I knew straight away that we were soul mates. Being a pet parent for five months has changed my life and taught me so much. Pugs have so many unique characteristics and having a pug puppy of my own now I have learnt so many new things about this adorable breed. Either though it's hard to say no for them, there are some things that you may need to consider before you adopt one of your own. You will never ever be alone again. I'm pretty sure that you have seen paintings or movies which shows that pugs were bred as lapdogs for the Chinese emperors in the accent times. This can give you a hint that even nowadays pugs are very good at this. Happy follows me around the house literally everywhere. He is like my shadow; he goes everywhere I go. I mean everywhere, including the bathroom. No more private time to yourself once you get a pug. Not to mention, there is absolutely no personal space. Happy literally sit in our face if he feels like it. He is really not bothered, and he thinks that's a perfect place to rest. Gain weight easily. Now that my brother moved in with us, I live currently with two chefs and a pug. They are all obsessed with food, so it's tough not to pick up their habit. I feel confident to say that out of the three boys, Happy has the biggest obsession of food. Happy is such a small breed, but when it comes to food he will make room for it, I mean literally anytime. He eats like there is no tomorrow. He doesn't get full; this is why when it comes to a pug, you always need to measure their food intake or they will plump out in no time. Always follow a healthy diet and regular exercises with a pug. They will eat literally everything. I've seen Happy eat the strangest things ever. Like snail's house, orange peels and even broken brick bits. No matter how cautious we are about things dropping or lying around on the floor, he will find something that he really not suppose to, and he will eat it. Some expensive vet visits. This is the part that scares a lot of people away from getting a pug. They are prone to health problems such as eye ulcers, epilepsy, skin fold infections, kidney stones, breathing problems and even food allergies. You also need to be extra cautious about their bulging eyes as they can easily scratch them. To summarise this, do your research about their health issues and make sure you check up on the breeder before you adopt your furry friend. Carl's did his research very well before getting Happy, his parents and even grandparents never had any health issues, so that's a good start, but again this doesn't mean that he cannot get any. Fingers crossed. Also, make sure you get pet insurance. High maintenance. Don't get me wrong I'm definitely not complaining as I love pugs and I love Happy, but he is without any doubt a high maintenance puppy. Cutting his nails, brushing his fur, bathing him every two weeks or we will end with a very dirty smelly pug, brushing his teeth and a lot of facial care. Those beautiful wrinkles on a pug's face require a lot of cleaning, or it will result in infections. Yes, he needs just as much carrying as a child. If you don't have time for all this, pugs aren't the right breed for you I'm afraid. Attention seekers. Pug puppies always want to play and like to be in the centre of the attention. They are people dogs. They aren't the kind of breed who are okay with just left for themselves all the time. Anytime Happy plays with his toys, he always around us. He tries to get as close as he can, and he is continuously checking upon us from the corner of his eyes to make sure we still there. Love or hate relationship with water. Some pugs absolutely cannot stand water. Puddles, ponds, showers, rains all a big no for those who hate water. However, certain pugs love water just as much as food. Luckily our little boy is the second one. Anytime he hears the shower or the bath running, he runs all the way up on the stairs across the hallway to the bathroom hoping that it is his bathtime. Carl loves running the shower for a minute or two before jumping in and by the time he is trying to get in Happy is there having so much fun with the dropping water on his face. Their obsession with toilets. Happy gets way too excited when he hears the toilet flushing. During a dog's house training, there are times when accidents happen. Sometimes more sometimes less but at the end of the day you will end up picking up a lot of poops. It all depends where the accident happens, but when it closer to the bathroom, I always flush it down, and of course, Happy inspect the situation very carefully. He gets to the bathroom before me then he stands up on his feet, putting the first two paws on the toilet seat and waiting until I flush the toilet down. Once it's flushed, he walks away as nothing happened. Sounds funny and quite worrying in the same time writing this down. Double coated of fur. Well, this is something that certainly surprised me about pugs. Looking at all the furniture around the house and our clothes are more definitely don't look the same as used to before Happy. No matter how many times we clean everything, they all covered with his fur in the next hour. Fawn pugs have a double coat which means they malt I mean they malt a hell of a lot. Once you get a pug, a hair-less outfit will be a distant memory, and a sticky lint roller will be your best friend. Energy level. Happy is a very happy and cheerful dog. He enjoys his nap times, but he thrives on activity. He is always ready to play, but this is not uncommon with young pug puppies. Most of them just like him—walkies, a lot of playtimes and running up and down the stairs nonstop. Patience with house training. Pugs are very stubborn, which means they will test your patience when it comes to potty training. They aren't the easiest breed to potty train but again not impossible. One thing to keep in mind is they do not respond to punishment quite well, so try to train them with positive reinforcement like treats. Stubborn breed. Oh, yes, they are. They do not respond to commands quickly, and it will take time to accept your authority. They do love to do what they want, and lead-training will might take a bit longer than with other dogs, but if you are patient enough and you stick to it, you will notice that he is acknowledging who is in charge. They're very loyal. Just because training is a bit of challenge with a pug doesn't mean they are not as smart as other dogs. Pugs are incredibly loyal once they are trained. Once you gained their trust, they will follow you anywhere. They will listen to every word you say intently. Their purpose in life is most certainly is your happiness. This is why our little boy got his name, Happy. He's already made our lives happier than ever before. Pug eyes. Pugs have large, gorgeous, dark eyes which also make them very vulnerable. They are very sensitive, and they are easily proved to any eye issues. When Happy was about months old, we got him a fluffy toy that he loved, but we had to get rid of it because every time he chewed it, he got a bit of fluff on his eye. It was not pretty and wasn't a simple task to get it removed as it got stuck on his eyeball. Excellent watchdog. Pugs make good guard dogs. They keep the noise to the minimum that your neighbour also will appreciate. Have space for your pug wardrobe. Some humans love to dress their dogs in cute outfits, so if you are one of them, pugs are for you. Yep, I'm just as guilty as you are! At times, clothing is necessary for dogs like for most of the flat-faced breeds. Pugs are not good at controlling their body temperature, which means you need to protect them in the cold by clothing them. Unique characters. Pugs are super extraordinary creatures who will change your life for the better. They wheeze, snort, sneeze, fart and snore. They make some super weird and funny noises while they are napping. They will keep you laughing and put a smile on your face every single day. They will steal your heart. Pugs are happy, loyal, charming, playful and mischievous creatures. Once you get one of your own, you will never go back. They give unconditional love to their families. Happy always give kisses and want to snuggle up with us. He glazes at us like we are the best people on this planet. Completely melts our hearts. We have happy for about five months now, and despite all his quirks I do not regret it for a second welcoming him in our lives. He makes the perfect pet for us. Since day one, he got me hooked for life. Have you ever considered getting a pug? Have you ever had a pug? If so, please share your tips or advice in the comment below.
Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic French Bulldog Overview Bat-eared but oddly beautiful, the French Bulldog has a unique appeal. Aesthetically, other breeds undeniably are more glamorous and showy, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what many behold in the French Bulldog are the attributes that make this breed one of the best companion dogs in the world today. The French Bulldog is small but substantial in build with a powerful muscular body. He sports a short easy-care coat to accompany his easygoing personality. The Frenchie likes to play, but he also enjoys spending his days relaxing on the sofa. That love of play and relaxed attitude carry over into their training sessions. French Bulldogs are intelligent, and training them is easy as long as you make it seem like a game and keep it fun. They are free thinkers and are not an ideal breed for competing in obedience or agility although some have risen to the challenge. This freethinking approach can also lead to a stubborn nature, and if they decide to dig in their heels there is no budging them. Frenchies are loving companions who thrive on human contact. If you want an outdoor dog who can be left alone for long periods, the Frenchie is not the breed for you. This is a dog who enjoys lavishing love on his human companions as much as he loves the same treatment in return. They generally get along well with everyone, including children. They can, however, be territorial and possessive of their people, especially in the presence of other dogs. Socialization is a must for this breed, but with their easy companionship this is an enjoyable task. With a nature that is both humorous and mischievous, the French Bulldog needs to live with someone who is consistent, firm, and patient with all the antics and idiosyncrasies that make him both frustrating and delightful. They can be protective of their home and family and some will try to defend both with their life. French Bulldogs do not need a lot of room and do very well in apartments or small dwellings. A couple of minute walks per day should keep them from becoming overweight. Keep the Frenchie in cool, comfortable surroundings. This is not a dog who can stay outside on a hot day. French Bulldogs are wonderful companion dogs with a gentle nature. If you work at home, the Frenchie is happy to lie at your feet all day or follow you from room to room. They were originally bred to be bull-baiting dogs, but this practice was outlawed in England in .French Bulldogs were then imported to France where they became popular as companion dogs. The dogs were prized for their gentle nature and their ability to adapt to cramped living quarters. French Bulldogs also became popular with the French upper class, and they were often depicted in paintings and sculptures. French Bulldogs were first brought to the United States in the late s, and they quickly became popular with American families. The dogs were known for their friendly and playful personality, and they made great companions for children. French Bulldogs also became popular with celebrities, and they were often featured in movies and television shows. Today, French Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. They are known for their friendly and playful personality, their low-maintenance coat, and their adaptability to different living conditions. French Bulldogs make great companions for people of all ages and lifestyles. The French Bulldog thrived in France and Europe, and his charm was soon discovered by Americans as well. Males weigh 20 to 28 pounds, females 16 to 24 pounds. French Bulldog Personality This is a smart, loving dog who wants and needs to spend lots of time with his people. Hip dysplasia can exist with or without clinical signs. Some dogs exhibit pain and lameness on one or both rear legs. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Ask the breeder for proof that the parents have been tested for hip dysplasia and found to be free of problems. Brachycephalic Syndrome : This disorder is found in dogs with short heads, narrowed nostrils, or elongated or soft palates. Their airways are obstructed to varying degrees and can cause anything from noisy or labored breathing to total collapse of the airway. Dogs with brachycephalic syndrome commonly snuffle and snort. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition but includes oxygen therapy as well as surgery to widen nostrils or shorten palates. Allergies: Allergies are a common problem in dogs. The medication for inhalant allergies depends on the severity of the allergy. It is important to note that ear infections often accompany inhalant allergies. Hemivertebrae: This is a malformation of one or more vertebrae that causes it to be shaped like a wedge or triangle. This malformation can occur on its own or with other vertebrae malformations. Hemivertebra can cause no problems, or it can put pressure on the spinal cord. This can lead to pain, weakness, and or paralysis. There is no treatment for the condition unless there is spinal cord pressure. It is caused when the patella, which has three parts — the femur thigh bone , patella knee cap , and tibia calf — is not properly lined up and slips in and out of place luxates. This causes lameness or an abnormal gait the way the dog moves. The rubbing caused by patellar luxation can lead to arthritis, a degenerative joint disease. There are four grades of patellar luxation ranging from grade I, an occasional luxation causing temporary lameness in the joint, to grade IV, in which the turning of the tibia is severe and the patella cannot be realigned manually. This gives the dog a bowlegged appearance. Severe grades of patellar luxation may require surgical repair. When the disc pushes into the spinal cord, nerve transmissions are inhibited from traveling along the spinal cord. Intervertebral Disc Disease can be caused by trauma, age, or simply from the physical jolt that occurs when a dog jumps off a sofa. When the disc ruptures, the dog usually feels pain and the ruptured disc can lead to weakness and temporary or permanent paralysis. In some cases surgery can help, but it must be done within a day or so of the injury. You may also want to ask your veterinarian about physical rehabilitation. Treatments such as massage, water treadmills and electrical stimulation are available for dogs and can have excellent success. It affects the clotting process due to the reduction of von Willebrand factor in the blood. Occasionally blood is found in the stool. This disorder is usually diagnosed in your dog between the ages of 3 and 5 and cannot be cured. However, it can be managed with treatments that include cauterizing or suturing injuries, transfusions of the von Willebrand factor before surgery, and avoiding certain medications. Cleft Palate : The palate is the roof of the mouth and separates the nasal and oral cavities. It is made up of two parts, hard and soft. A cleft palate has a slit that runs bilaterally or unilaterally and can range in size from a small hole to a large slit. A cleft palate can affect both the hard and soft palate separately and together and may cause a cleft lip. Puppies can be born with cleft palates, or a cleft palate can occur from an injury. Cleft palates are fairly common in dogs, but many puppies born with a cleft palate do not survive or are euthanized by the breeder. The only treatment for a cleft palate is surgery to close the hole, although not all dogs with a cleft palate require the surgery. It is important to get a diagnosis and treatment recommendation from your veterinarian. Elongated Soft Palate: The soft palate is the extension of the roof of the mouth. When the soft palate is elongated, it can obstruct airways and cause difficulty in breathing. The treatment for Elongated Soft Palate is surgical removal of the excess palate. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Regardless of how healthy your dog is when you first bring them home, you should prepare for any issues that may come up throughout their life. French Bulldog Care French Bulldogs do not need a lot of exercise. They have fairly low energy levels, although there are exceptions to every rule. To keep their weight down, however, they need daily exercise through short walks or play times in the yard. Many French Bulldogs enjoy playing and will spend much of their time in various activities, but they are not so high energy that they need a large yard or long periods of exercise. This breed is prone to heat exhaustion and should not be exercised in hot temperatures. Limit walks and active play to cool mornings and evenings. When training a French Bulldog, take into account that although they are intelligent and usually eager to please, they are also free thinkers. That means they can be stubborn. It is important to crate train your French Bulldog puppy even if you plan to give him the freedom of the house when he reaches adulthood. French Bulldog Feeding Recommended daily amount: 1 to 1. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. For more on feeding your Frenchie, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. The skin is loose and wrinkled, especially at the head and shoulders, and has a soft texture. French Bulldogs come in a variety of colors, including fawn, cream, various shades of brindle — a coat patterned with specks and streaks of light and dark markings — such as black brindle and the striking tiger brindle, and brindle and white, known as brindle pied. French Bulldogs can be any color except solid black, liver a solid reddish-brown with brown pigmentation on the lips and nose , mouse a light steely gray , and black with white or tan. Run from any breeder who tells you that a particular color is rare and thus worth more money. Having your heart set on a fawn female is a recipe for disappointment when the litter contains only cream and brindle males. French Bulldogs are fairly easy to groom and need only an occasional brushing to keep their coat healthy. They are average shedders. Begin grooming your Frenchie at a young age and teach your puppy to stand on a table or floor to make this experience easier on both of you. When you are grooming your Frenchie at any stage of life, take the time to check for any scabs, skin lesions, bare spots, rough, flaky skin, or signs of infections. You should also check ears, eyes and teeth for any discharge or bad smells. Both are signs that your Frenchie may need to see the veterinarian. Clean ears regularly with a damp warm cloth and run a cotton swab around the edge of the canal. Never stick the cotton swab into the actual ear canal. If the edges of the ears are dry, apply mineral or baby oil sparingly. The oil can also be used on a dry nose. French Bulldogs do not naturally wear their nails down and will need their nails trimmed regularly. This prevents splitting and tearing, which can be painful for the dog. Keep the facial wrinkles clean and dry to prevent bacterial infections. Whenever you bathe your dog, take the time to thoroughly dry the skin between the folds. Bathe your French Bulldog monthly or as needed, and use a high-quality dog shampoo to keep the natural oils in his skin and coat. French Bulldogs should be easy to groom, and with proper training and positive experiences during puppyhood, grooming can be a wonderful bonding time for you and your Frenchie. That said, no dog should ever be left alone with a young child. When they are socialized to them during puppyhood, Frenchies can get along well with other dogs and cats. French Bulldog Rescue Groups French Bulldogs are often acquired without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one, and these dogs often end up in the care of rescue groups, in need of adoption or fostering. All dogs will need veterinary care at some point in their lives. French Bulldog Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. Below are breed clubs, organizations, and associations where you can find additional information about the French Bulldog. Now you can find out how popular the Frenchie dog is based on AKC most popular dog breeds in .These findings were based on stats on AKC registration statistics. It is important to note that even though the French Bulldog is listed as the fourth most popular dog there are many rare Frenchie colors that are not accepted and therefore do not have the AKC registration. The Frenchie breed is popular for their fun-loving, laid back nature and this has contributed to their almost universal appeal among dog lovers. If you have been searching for the perfect Frenchie puppy , we must warn you that this is where your search comes to an end. Armed with an overdose of cuteness and a tough-on-the-outside,sweet-on-the-inside expression, you are minutes away from a French Bulldog puppy fever. Discover the history of the French Bulldog on Meet the Breeds! Is the Frenchie dog breed the right breed for me? French Bulldogs have a unique personality than other breeds and it is recommended you learn more about this breed before getting one. Society stigmatize them as a lazy low maintenance small breed you can just carry everywhere. This is far from the truth. French Bulldogs often require as much attention as a newborn baby. Appearance of the French Bulldog dog The Frenchie dog is one of the miniature dog breed. One of their signature physical attributes are the over-sized bat-like ears that add spades of cute to this furry fellow. They have a muscle bound, compact frame with heavy bones. Their heads are large and square, compared to the rest of their body which tapers off to lean and smaller hind quarters. They have a wrinkly, almost flat face featuring a very short and often black muzzle. This gives them a scrunched up, eternally long-suffering look that provides several funny expressions and makes them look almost human. Their eyes are small, dark and set just above the muzzle. They have strong necks, wide chests and smooth, soft coats that come in a variety of colors. Their tails are usually short and either straight or screwed. The Frenchie dog is alert, friendly and sturdy. Their signature sitting positions will often remind you of a turkey leg. You most definitely will want to nibble on that! How do you know what color is your Frenchie puppy? If you work most of the day, and planning on leaving your Frenchie at home alone until you come back, please re-think getting this breed. It is too often that this breed is being surrendered to a rescue due to the inability of spending time with the dog. French Bulldogs will get angry and destroy things to get your attention if you are ignoring them or not there for them. If you are retired, and want a great loving companion this might be the breed for you. Should I get a French Bulldog puppy or a Pug puppy? There is no simple answer to this question. Our Frenchie Weight Calculator can tell you an approx weight of your puppy or dog instantly based on on your dogs age and breed size. A general idea of an ideal weight would be lbs for a male Frenchie and lbs for a female French Bulldog depending on frame and height. French Bulldog dog breed is considered one of the lazy breeds since they love to lay around and sleep a lot. Frenchies can become overweight or obese very quickly and that can lead to many health issues that can be avoided with proper and ideal weight. My Frenchie is too thin, what should I do? First ask yourself, is your Frenchie months of age? If so its natural for them to look skinny, they are still growing and filling up to their mature body. Has your Frenchie been through any medical proceedure in the last few months that requires anesthesia? It is normal that your French Bulldog is skinnier after a proceedure such as neutering, spaying, boas surgery etc. If your French Bulldog is not a puppy and have not been through any medical procedures but still looks thin there are a few options to help them gain a bit of weight and reach an ideal weight: -De-worm your Frenchie and rule out intestinal parasites with the help of your vet. Things like chicken or beef broth, a dollop of non-fat plain yogurt are safe for your Frenchie to consume in moderation. Does your Frenchie eat raw, dry or wet food? Ask yourself does he or she like the food? This type of supplement usually comes in a tube and is easy to give the dog. How will being underweight or overweight affect my Frenchie's health? Just like people an overweight or obese Frenchie may exprience a shortness of breath with little to no exercise. It is a matter of life or death for a breed like the French Bulldogs that already has respiratory issues in the first place. In addition you can expect an overweight Frenchie to have Diabetes and heart disease. They may also experience joint problems and inability to walk or run. Even 5 pounds would affect a Frenchie tremendously due to their already small size. If your Frenchie is underweight it could be a sign of a serious health problem. It would best to talk to your vetranarian and test for major health issues such as parasites, gastrointestinal disease or kidney disease etc. How can I tell my French Bulldog is overweight? Did you know that more than half of the dogs in the world are overweight? Chances are 50 percet that your dog may fall into that catagory as well. The signs of an overweight Frenchie is : - No muscle tone - Heavy breathing with little to no exercise. What should I do if my Frenchie is overweight? Here is a list of things to consider when it comes to a French Bulldog that is overweight: - There has been extensive research in regards to thyroid health and dogs that pull on dog collars. Are you using a collar or a harness on your French Bulldog? Does your Frenchie pull? Is it possible the collar is affecting your French Bulldog's thyroid gland? A collar pushes on the throat exactly in the area of the thyroid gland, and any trauma created by the pulling can inflame the thyroid. Read the label which will list protein, fat content and calories per cup. Ask your vet for any suggestions for your specific needs. Should I free feed my Frenchie? It is not recommended to free feed a French Bulldogs since Frenchies will typically overeat. That is not to say that every Frenchie is the same and yours might do well with free feeding. How much should a French Bulldog puppy cost? Why are Frenchie puppies so expensive? French Bulldogs puppies are more expensive than other dog breeds due to the fact that Frenchies can't have Frenchie puppies naturally. Is this breeder posting a scam? Stay away from buying a Frenchie puppy if the price is too good to be true. It most likely be a scam. Furthermore never purchase a Frenchiebulldog puppy without references from prior buyers, and a contract in place. Never transfer money in western union or any other means that will not cover your purchase in case the deal went south. Even if its not a scam, a breeder can only offer a Frenchie for a cheap amount if they bypass many necessary testings. Buying a healthy Frenchie puppy will never be cheap and can help avoid a lifetime of vet bills and care as well as heartache. Why does my male Frenchie squat and not lift his leg when going potty? It is normal for male French Bulldogs to go to the bathroom squatting instead of lifting their leg. This is due to their stocky built and their short body. When your dog is marking his territoty or around other dogs it is possible he might lift his leg. Can I place another dog with my Frenchie in the same crate? It would have to depend on your dog's personalities and whether they get along. Another thing to keep in mind is not crating the opposite genders if they are not fixed. If your Frenchie shown any aggression to the other dog it is not recommended you crate them together. However, if they get along well and are best freinds it may be beneficial to crate together to eliminate separation anxiety. Make sure the crate is large enogh for them to be comfortable. My Frenchie puppy ate the pee pad, what should I do? Don't panic! A lot of French Bulldogs go through a chewing phase where they eat everything in sight. Your Frenchie will most likely pass the pee pads in stool. Watch your Frenchie for any signs of blockage like constant vomitting and unable to go to the bathroom and take your French Bulldog to the vet if you believe there was any issue in passing the pads. My Frenchie bulldog is aggressive towards children. What should I do? Do not allow your Frenchie to be mean to kids or other pets. Your French Bulldog needs to have respect to other household members. When French Bulldogs get away with this behavior this problem will only get worse so correct it as soon as it starts. Another method of eliminating aggression in French Bulldogs is to overly praise them when they are affectionate, and when they are not, ignore and stand your ground. At times positive reinforcement with Frenchies work the best since they are very emotional. My Frenchie suffers from allergies and cytopoint. My vet recommended the use of the medication Apoquel. Every Frenchie is different and off course they each have their own sets of problems and symtoms, however, as a responsible owner you need to educate yourself on the medication Apoquel before giving it to your dog just like you would with any other medication. There are wonderful holistic vet care facilities everywhere that take a different approach that does not include drugs. This medication works because it suppresses your Frenchie's immunity system so they don't feel the need to itch. The downside is that its a highly addictive drug which your Frenchie will need to rely on for many years, and when you stop giving it to them the symptoms might come back and be worse than they are before starting. Another side effect stemming from Apoquel is constant ear infections. Some dog owners reported cancer after prolong use but there is no scientific research or proof that it causes it. Before starting such a serious medication you can always try a more holistic approach like special shampoos, bath treatments, immunity booster treats, goat milk, supplements, coconut oil etc. Should I give my Frenchie a bully stick? Absolutely not. French Bulldogs are known to choke on bully sticks. In fact it is recommended you never give a Frenchie any type of hard bone including Antlers etc. For a treat it is always recommended to use a soft treat that can easily dissolve even if they swollow it whole. Although, French Bulldog breeders can, and do, go beyond these, there are three main colors that Frenchies come in. These are brindle, fawn and pied. While these are the most common colors, they do come in such a mix that you could reasonably assemble French bulldogs with different coats. Brindle is the most dominant color of the breed. A brindle Frenchie has a mostly dark coat with light hairs mixed in here and there. According to the French Bulldog Club of America, the coat isactually made of a base of fawn hairs, through which black hairs extend in bands. This means there must be a patch of enough fawn hairs to show the brindle pattern, no matter where that patch is located. Other shades of brindle french bulldogs include: The strong brindle Frenchie - Mix of brown and tan coat coloration in Frenchies. The brindle pied French Bulldog - A Frenchie dog with a chest, head, neck or toes sporting white hairs. The seal brindle French Bulldog- A French Bulldog with very light white hair that may even seem invisible. It is also common to see some of the dogs with coats that have a light tan, golden tan or a reddish tan. When Frenchie dogs have a dark reddish fawn color, they are referred to as a red-fawn. Although fawn Frenchies usually have lighter masks as well, it is more common for them to have a dark mask and a black nose. Their ears are also commonly dark and they may even have some brindle streaksin their coat. Pied Frenchie Bulldogs have a coat that ranges from white to eggshell color. Their coat may look porcelain white or a bright cream. Often, these color types will have one dark patch that stands out and gives them their personality. This may be around the eyes or some other place on the body of the Frenchie dog. The Frenchie dog breed comes in a variety of unusual colors. Rare colors in French Bulldog puppies can be exceptionally expensive depending on how rare the puppy is. Also there is some debate about how healthy a rare colored Frenchie can be. Rare colors can be merle, lilac, blue and more. Keep on reading to learn everything about French Bulldog puppies! After the Industrial Revolution, they had to move to southern France where lacemaking was still done by hand and took their dogs with them. Frenchies soon got popular in the circles of French artists, actors, writers in Paris as well as rich Americans visiting the city. In fact, they loved Frenchies so much that they took them to the US, where they finally got recognized by the AKC in .Frenchie Characteristics French Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds thanks to their fun, adaptable, friendly nature and distinctive look. You can easily recognize them by their flat, heavily wrinkled faces and large, erect bat ears, which make them absolutely adorable. In the nineteenth century, the Bulldog was fairly popular in England, especially around Nottingham. The French women, especially, were attracted to these little Bulldogs, especially those with erect ears a common but disliked feature in England. Dog dealers brought more of the clownish little dogs to France, where they soon became the rage of Paris. The dogs were dubbed Bouledogue Francais. How big do French Bulldogs get? Some Bulldogs are quite small weighing less than 25 lbs, however, dogs in this breed on average, weigh 28 lbs. What are some French Bulldog facts and information? Facts French Bulldogs are best known for: Bat ears. Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. Share via Email Eleanor, a golden retriever, spent most of her life in a horrific puppy mill where she was forced to breed puppies in deplorable conditions, living in a cramped cage with only six inches of clearance. The trauma she experienced left her anxious and unable to make eye contact, a heartbreaking reminder of the inhumane treatment she had endured. Despite her suffering, Eleanor never lost her maternal instincts for other dogs, and her story is a powerful reminder of the cruelty of puppy mills and the importance of rescuing animals from such places. Her new owner set up a small bathroom for her to feel safe, and it took a long time for her to become comfortable with the outside world and walk on a leash. Despite all of this, she never lost her maternal instincts for other dogs. Every day was a battle against the deep scars left by her cruel past. But it was a new experience for Eleanor to enjoy toys, and she became attached to a stuffed animal that she would collect and lay on, as if seeking comfort from the horrors of her past. Resilient Eleanor Inspires with Journey to Recovery As her personality blossomed, her owners saw her struggles and the indomitable spirit that refused to be broken. She now radiates joy and love, and her personality shines brighter each day. They know the horrors of puppy mills all too well and urge people to adopt rescue dogs instead. She even shielded a fellow furry friend during a thunderstorm, a gesture that moved her owners to tears. Related Articles. Most of the mother dogs are considered spent at just 6 years old because they can no longer reliably produce litters. Gracie was one of the lucky ones. Her last day on the breeding farm was not her last day of life. A golden retriever who spent six years whelping puppies on a farm in Pennsylvania, Gracie likely produced close to puppies, making tens of thousands of dollars for her owner. Years of constant pregnancies and births took a toll on her body, aging her much faster than a typical companion dog. Gracie devoted herself to producing milk and caring for her puppies, only to have them taken away again and again. She most likely never saw the inside of a home. She grew thin and weak until she was no longer useful. Fortunately, when the puppy mill was finished breeding her, the farm owner decided to give Gracie to a rescue organization instead of killing her. She was fostered for a few weeks, spayed and treated for anaplasmosis , and after she recovered, Gracie was adopted by Amanda LoCoco, one of our campaigners for our Stop Puppy Mills campaign. But once Gracie arrived at her new home, she wasted no time in making herself comfortable on the couch and exploring the yard. Gracie loves snuggling up on the couch with her new family. Loud noises scare her, and she also remains a little timid about accepting treats or eating in front of people. Besides snuggling on the couch, her favorite pastime is rolling in the grass any chance she gets. We fight in many ways: for example, by advocating for local ordinances that prohibit the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores and by exposing problem breeders in our yearly Horrible Hundred reports. We believe in fighting the big fights and seeing the broader picture as we work to stop the most widespread abuses of animals. But we also believe that every kind action is one important step to creating a better world for animals. Everyone on our Stop Puppy Mills team has adopted one or more dogs who originally spent their lives as strays or in puppy mills, or who landed in a shelter for unknown reasons. Our adopted animals remind us that our work has tangible impacts. Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group not only makes a world of difference for that pup, but also helps to dry up the market for puppy mills and the pet stores that support them. We will never stop fighting to make the world more humane for mama dogs like Gracie. While the intent may be good hearted and charitable, and the cause worthwhile, auctioning off a pet of any type or breed encourages impulse adoptions without thinking through the consequences or responsibilities for the adopting family. The result is typically a bad outcome for both the pet and the family an ignored animal, reluctance to provide basic vet care, inadequate exercise, etc. In many cases the pet comes from a disreputable breeder, in the dog world, also known as a puppy mill who advertises low cost animals but has raised the animals in extremely poor living conditions without regard to health or genetic dispositions. The only guarantee for the adopter is that if they get a sick or problem animal, they get a replacement animal, not a refund. Certificates of pedigree are frequently false. We screen the dogs, evaluate them medically, assure they get all shots and a vet checkup, and then try to match the best dog to qualified applicants by looking at whether the dog is good with children, good with other pets, etc. When NGRR hears of an auction involving Golden Retrievers, we contact the sponsor of the lottery and try to talk them out of it, citing many examples of bad outcomes. If after our pleading, they still insist on going ahead with it, we try to convince them to at least tell the winning ticket holder that we will take the dog with no questions asked, at any time. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. One of the most rewarding things you can do is to introduce a new puppy into your family. These days especially, it is no surprise that the puppy market is booming. Unfortunately, when there is so much money at stake, there will always be people out there determined to take advantage of the situation. In the dog industry, greed and cruelty have resulted in the emergence of puppy mills. To put it simply, puppy mills are commercial puppy breeding operations that prioritize producing large numbers of desirable puppies over the health and well-being of the dogs involved, both parents and puppies. In this article, I will take a closer look at what exactly puppy mills are, how they work, and why they are so awful. I will also share some tips on what you can do to identify, avoid, and ultimately help put puppy mills out of business. What Are Puppy Mills? They are mainly characterized by putting profit ahead of the welfare of the dogs involved in their work. In these puppy mills, female dogs are often forced to breed multiple times a year with insufficient time to recover between pregnancies in order to maximize the number of puppies available for sale. This in itself puts the health and well-being of the mother at risk. In addition to this, parent dogs, both mothers, and fathers, are often kept in very confined conditions and are given none of the love and attention that dogs need to thrive. Veterinary attention during pregnancy can also be very limited to further cut costs. When dogs outlive their usefulness as breeders, they are often carelessly killed or abandoned. The puppies, when they are born, are often caught in similarly poor conditions. Lots of puppies, from multiple mothers, can be kept together in cages that can quickly become extremely filthy and unhygienic. As a breeder keeper, I can attest to the difficulty of keeping one litter of puppies clean let alone multiple puppies from multiple litters. In many cases, puppies can be separated from their mothers when they are very young and can be sold when they are younger than eight weeks old , which is the absolute earliest that they should be removed from their mothers. When breeders focus on producing a large number of puppies, rather than quality, healthy puppies, important breeding concerns are often overlooked. Reputable breeders will screen their parents for hereditary diseases to try and limit their prevalence in the breed. They will also ensure that puppies receive good nutrition, appropriate veterinary care, and essential vaccinations to ensure that they thrive in life. Puppy mill dogs generally receive none of this attention. The Humane Society estimates there are around 10, puppy mills in the United States. Collectively, they keep around , dogs in poor captive conditions for breeding and sell more than two million dogs a year. That seems like a lot of puppies, and unfortunately, many people buy from a puppy mill without even knowing it. In fact, most of the puppies you find in pet stores, particularly large chain pet shops, come from puppy mills. Puppy mills will also sell directly to the public, usually via online advertising. From the OC Register : But how bad are these puppy mills really? The dogs were found to be kept in extremely unsanitary conditions that results in malnutrition, skin diseases, and other infections. A similar Humane Society investigation in Oregon in found dogs kept in inhumane conditions that were consequently emaciated and plagued by untreated wounds and mange. But why are these puppy mills so hard to deal with? Well, for starters, people continue to buy puppies from these mills. Many people believe they are helping these dogs by taking them out of the appalling conditions that they were born and raised in, but in reality, buying these puppies feeds demand and encourages mills to keep doing what they are doing. Moreover, the federal Animal Welfare Act sets the bar pretty low when it comes to caring for puppies in commercial breeding businesses. As long as the puppies survive, the federal law has no implication for the breeder. While states can pass tougher laws, these are far from common. Puppy mills are inhumane in the way that they treat dogs, but this is far from the only reason why they have a hugely negative impact on the dog industry. They are also responsible for introducing unhealthy dogs often either inbred or with hereditary health issues into the general community. While good breeders screen for and control for health issues, puppy mill breeders avoid these best practices to save even more money. This means you can take home a seemingly healthy puppy who can start to show serious hereditary health issues within a few years. They can also carry common dog diseases that dogs should be vaccinated against. As well as quickly leading to more severe health issues, they can pass these illnesses to other dogs. Many puppy mill dogs are also raised with minimal human socialization or negative human interactions that can instill fear of humans. This can lead to major behavioral issues that can later become problems at home, or see dogs in shelters as new owners are unable to handle these dogs. Well, first and foremost, try to adopt from shelters whenever possible, as they are full of dogs that need homes. You can read more about adopting dogs from shelters here. Almost all puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills, which is why in recent years so many pet stores are no longer keeping puppies on-site and selling them. Now, when it comes to online ads and websites, how can you detect a puppy mill? Ask To Visit Ask to visit in person so you can meet the mother and see where the puppies are bred and cared for. Many puppy mills will tell you this is not possible. Sadly, just being invited to see where the puppies live is not always enough, as some puppy mills will set up temporary backyard homes for puppies and their parents. Pay attention to the details! If the puppies or parents seem afraid or unaccustomed to human interaction, this is a red flag. However, good breeders still have methods to keep their puppies clean. They should also have a good knowledge of the breed that they are working with and be able to have in-depth conversations with you about the breed. Seek Out Paperwork! While puppy mills will sometimes provide falsified documents, if they say that they are unable to provide these documents, this is a red flag. Ask For References Breeders that care about their dogs will stay in touch with new owners for a while after the sale to ensure that the dog is healthy and happy. This means they should be able to provide references. Ask for references, and follow them up. If possible, speak to people who have had their dog for a few years, as they will have had time to recognize any problems. You can read our complete guide to adopting a puppy here. Aside from avoiding buying from puppy mills, what else can you do to help fight puppy mills? If you think you have come into contact with a puppy mill, there are a variety of places to which you can report them depending on where you live. The Humane Society is generally a good place to make your first report. You can report a puppy mill to the Humane Society here. Another thing you can do is support organizations that are set up to protect animals and bring down organizations like puppy mills, such as the Humane Society and the ASPCA. Yes, puppy mills are still a prevalent problem around the world! There are estimated to be around 10, puppy mills in the United States alone. As the demand for puppies grows, puppy mills sadly remain profitable. Are puppy mills illegal in the United States? Commercial dog breeding facilities are legal in the United States, and state laws governing the level of care that puppies must receive in these breeding facilities are loose and lax. This leaves space for puppy mills to work and maximize their profits through maltreatment and poor care of their dogs. How are puppy mills cruel? Puppy mills treat animals like products made to be sold rather than as living beings with feelings and needs. The dogs are kept in appalling conditions and starved of the love and attention that they need. Mother dogs are often forced to breed repeatedly, putting their health at risk. The dogs are generally kept in small cages and in unhygienic conditions. What do puppy mills do with unsold puppies? Puppy mills will mark down the prices on puppies to ensure that they sell, but if they prove impossible to sell, they are often abandoned and can be found on the streets or in shelters. Is it OK to buy dogs from the Amish? The Amish are one of the communities known to run puppy mills, but, just as everywhere, there will always be some good breeders and some bad ones. It is important to do the same research when buying from the Amish just as you would with any other breeder. Can you sell inbred dogs? Many breeders will breed closely related dogs, but reputable breeders will try to avoid this in order to minimize the chances of hereditary defects being passed down to puppies. Puppy mills breeders are less careful about this than more reputable breeders. The Verdict Puppy mills are a major problem in the dog selling industry. They subject dogs to appalling conditions in order to churn out puppies to sell for maximum profit. Not only are dogs and puppies maltreated, but poor breeding habits can also introduce diseases and other issues into the general dog population. Have you had experiences with puppy mills? Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist. Colby Colby Morita has been raising and training guide and service dog puppies for over 13 years. Colby has been writing to the PuppyInTraining. You may have read at length about puppy mill breeder dogs or just learned now about this travesty of the dog world. Puppy mill breeder dogs are adult dogs of all breeds who have lived their entire lives often up to seven years or more being repeatedly bred by commercial breeders whose sole motivation is to turn an easy dollar. The resulting puppies are typically sold to pet stores or via disreputable Internet sites to an unsuspecting public while the adults remain in the puppy mill to reproduce again. Adopting a Puppy Mill Survivor These commercial breeders have no interest in making sure the puppies are healthy, well-balanced representatives of the breed and no concern for the physical or emotional health of the parents. They view dogs as crop animals, not as family pets, and typically house them in squalid, appalling conditions. Here, we help prepare and transition Golden Retriever puppy mill survivors for life in an adoptive home. Many of our prospective adopters tell us they had no idea what a puppy mill dog would really be like until they met one in person. We are also happy to talk with you in more depth or answer additional questions at any time. The first thing to understand about puppy mill survivors is that they have lived very different lives compared to most other dogs. They have been kept either in small cages isolated from people and other animals or housed with multiple dogs in cramped areas, forced to stand or lie in their own filth. They have been poorly socialized, meaning that that they have had little to no human contact and have not been exposed to everyday sights and sounds. Any contact they have had with humans is likely to have been negative, so they do not trust humans or know how to form a healthy relationship with them. Some have been handled cruelly or had other traumatic experiences. Amazingly, even with this type of background, puppy mill dogs can and will recover, once rescued and rehabilitated. Their resilience can be awe-inspiring. Understandably, you may well ask if some dogs are too fearful or traumatized to ever lead normal lives. Those that have been most severely neglected or have suffered traumatic experiences may certainly take longer to rehabilitate. That said, living with a puppy mill breeder dog is a life-long commitment and adopters should expect to encounter different challenges along the way. While each dog is of course unique, there are some characteristics that many have in common. Here are some of the key factors an adoptive home should have in order to help a puppy mill dog succeed: a calm, quiet environment with minimal noise and commotion a secure fenced yard with a physical i. If your existing dog is confident, active, and affectionate with your family, it will help teach your puppy mill dog to act this way as well patience and understanding — not expecting more than the dog can handle or getting overly frustrated an openness to set-backs and an ability to use creative techniques to move forward a sense of humor also helps tremendously! Because these dogs are often very fearful, not only of people and their actions but also of startling noises, they have a high tendency to bolt. Should a puppy mill dog escape from your yard or other area, getting them to come back is extraordinarily difficult. They will not come willingly to a person, even if coaxed with food or other items that would tempt a normal dog. A fence also helps puppy mill dogs to feel secure and safe in their surroundings. Since these dogs are typically submissive in nature to humans, they are more sensitive to pain and do not recover quickly from experiences a confident dog could handle. This is why an invisible or electronic fence is not a viable option for a fearful dog. Children should, of course, always be supervised around any dog, but especially around a fearful dog. Lowering of the head, a sideways glance, closed mouth — these are all signs your dog may be uncomfortable. To help minimize stress, a child should allow the dog to approach him, rather than the other way around. When the dog approaches, the child should be quiet, gentle, and calm, and should not lean over the dog. An adult should always be present to protect the dog from becoming overwhelmed. In general, adoptive homes made up of adults or older children are the best scenario for a breeder dog. Friends and family members should take the same approach as children to your fearful dog. The adopter should be present so the dog has someone she knows and is comfortable with around her. Have your friends and family members sit with tasty treats and allow your dog to approach them. Let the dog sniff the newcomers and have them hand the dog a treat before attempting to pet. All visitors should act calm and gentle and not make any sudden or startling movements that may frighten the dog. Should you adopt a puppy mill breeder dog, it will be important that you are able to manage the environment so that visitors and new experiences are kept to a minimum, at least until your dog has progressed to a higher comfort level. This is a question we are asked often, and is certainly an important one for potential adopters to take into consideration. Each dog is different, of course, and while the percentage of puppy mill dogs with housebreaking issues is certainly higher than that of the general dog population, most acclimate very well in this regard after adoption. Some do need a longer time to understand appropriate potty routines due to their background. Remember that most puppy mill breeder dogs have lived in cages or outside pens their entire lives and have had to use their personal area as a bathroom without anyone to clean up after them. Now they must adapt to a new routine, and this can take time and patience. Another dog in the house will certainly help teach the puppy mill dog that going outside is where we potty. Using baby gates while you are not home is a good way to keep the dog out of a carpeted area, while still allowing space to move around. Most dogs, when these techniques are implemented, become housetrained in about a month, according to our adopters. Yes, you can and you should! However, walking on leash can be challenging for many fearful dogs. Walking jointly with a confident dog is a great help, as it gives the puppy mill dog a friend to stick with and follow. Take treats on your walk to reward your dog when she performs well. We highly recommend the use of a front-attaching harness to keep the dog secure. We suggest a patient groomer who has knowledge of fearful dogs and will use slow, gentle techniques — any rough handling will create a negative experience for your dog. The ideal situation would be a mobile groomer or one that will allow you to stay during the appointment to serve as a secure presence for your dog. We have been working extensively with puppy mill breeder dogs for over five years and our staff has developed strong skills in knowing how to start slowly with these dogs, gradually building more confidence and a higher comfort level with people. In , we went a step further and created an innovative program called Project Home Life, which is specifically designed to rehabilitate puppy mill breeder dogs and help them transition from life in a cage to life in a home. Volunteers work with the dogs on various activities according to their individual progress level to help build confidence. The dogs learn to approach people for treats and pets, plus how to respond to different sights and sounds around the house including TVs, doorbells, and furniture. Dogs also learn how to play with interactive dog toys. As a dog progresses, we work on obedience skills, walking on leash, and overcoming obstacles. This booklet helps our adopters continue working on some of the same activities their dog learned in Project Home Life so they can maintain continuity. An online support group is available where you can seek input and suggestions from other DVGRR adopters who have already brought a breeder dog home. We can provide information on finding reputable trainers and our staff is always available via phone or email for information, guidance, and support of any kind. After hearing about the unique challenges and issues involved with puppy mill breeder dogs, you may well be asking yourself if this is a journey you want to take. It is certainly not for everyone and if a fearful dog is not right for you, there are many other dogs that need wonderful homes. However, if you are drawn to the plight of the puppy mill breeder dogs and can respond to the challenges that may arise with adoption, please know that you will be providing a true second chance for a rescued dog. There is great reward and joy in watching a fearful dog wag her tail, bark for the first time, or learn to play with a toy. Yes, the progress takes place in baby steps, but if you have the patience, a positive attitude, and lots of love to share, you may just be what one of these special dogs needs. However, we also know that the training and conditioning we begin in the PHL program must continue after the dog is adopted. Both books provide a detailed look at living with and rehabilitating puppy mill dogs and other shy or fearful dogs and contain invaluable information and advice. This book features tried-and-true techniques to help your dog feel secure.

We all currently reside in Kailua, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. Veronica grew up here on Oahu, in Kailua, on the Windward side. She's had many pets and has always been an animal lover who's enjoyed caring for pets since she can remember. Casey is originally from Huntington Beach, Ca. In , our little Jack Russell Lucy passed away and we were longing for another dog. We had a wish list of sorts that we had in mind for our next dog: great temperament and personality low to no shed bigger breed During our search, we came across the labradoodle breed which fit the description perfectly. But it couldn't be that easy.We wanted a unique phantom colored labradoodle. Until now, finding any quality multi-generational labradoodle puppy in Hawaii was impossible. In , we searched diligently and came across a breeder in New Zealand, Willowbrook Farm, who had just had a litter of phantom colored labradoodles. We worked closely with the breeder and finally chose to make Maya part of our family. We were updated weekly with her progress, provided pictures of her during the entire process and enjoyed a very friendly dialog with the breeders. We anxiously awaited her arrival until she finally made her big voyage at 12 weeks old. We instantly fell in love with her. She is so kind, loving, smart, and obedient. Just a beautiful dog. She loves to watch animal planet, enjoys her tummy rubs, car rides, and loves to snuggle. Maya had three gorgeous litters and is now retired from our breeding program. Maya Cruise In , we decided to add the most gorgeous breeding stud into our breeding program. He is a 9 yr old multi-generational labradoodle that we imported from New Zealand. His name is Cruise and he has sired several amazing litters. We are committed to providing Hawaii with excellent multigenerational labradoodles. There are many "breeders" out there just breeding to breed and are not considering their responsibility in providing healthy and quality puppies for you to enjoy and add to your family. Also, do your research on what a F1 or F1B labradoodle is. F1's tend to have a totally different look and will shed. The F1B generally pull towards the poodle side with longer noses and tighter curls. We are conscientious about filling a need for the labradoodle community without adding to the pet over population problem. We want committed families so we know that our pups would never end up in a shelter. If you are interested in being placed on the wait list for the next litter, please fill out a puppy application. Simply put, there are no puppies left behind at Texas Australian Labradoodles and Australian Sheepadoodles. The public is slowly recognizing the value of smaller programs that do not mill their puppies and a handful of Australian Labradoodle Breeders in the US are following our footsteps and cutting the number of adult doodles in their program so that they do not have to be housed in kennels. Although all puppies are beautiful and can enrich the life of any family through their unique personality, we love the Australian Labradoodle and Australian Sheepadoodle puppies! He plays well with other dogs and children, is energetic enough to play fetch and will curl up with us on the couch and take a nap when it is movie time. It was a pleasure working with you guys through the process. From the initial meeting to the weekly picture updates to picking out and taking home our puppy. She is a people magnet. Everyone wants to see her and pet her because she is so gorgeous! And fluffy! We lover her curly coat! She is extremely smart…when she wants something and is definitely still in the hyper puppy stage! Her forbidden love is socks and she will do just about anything for a piece of cheese. The most important thing is that we love her so much. She brings so much joy to our family! We can love all over her…pet her…kiss her…and she wags her tail and licks us. She is a good girl! Still a hyper puppy that tries to get into everything, but a really good girl! My dog Pepper is a wonderful addition to my family! Beautiful dogs! They are beautiful and healthy. Our first one is almost 5 years old and we have a 2 month old. Lindy breeds them in a very clean home. She is extremely loving to these newborns and is open to all of our questions. She even follows up to see how they are doing. I would not buy from anyone else. Our 2 labradoodles get plenty of compliments. We have added 2 beautiful members to our family. I waited almost a year for mine and he has been life changing. They are truly amazing, healthy, loyal, and smart dogs! I have trained him and he is now a service dog and has been the greatest companion to me as well. Lindy always responded and kept me in the loop during the entire process. Before I met her I had a nightmare situation with a breeder that was a scam so was very skeptical but she made me feel at ease about everything. Thank you for everything Lindy! Nathan Kirton I ended up finding a puppy from someone else that fit my timeline better. The communication I had with her Lindy was amazing. She was super helpful, and gave me so much information about what I could expect. Thanks for being super helpful Lindy! We waited over a year and it was so worth it! Lindy was instrumental in our family getting the dog of our dreams. She was extremely helpful in asking and answering questions to ensure we got a right match for our family. She took into consideration all of my preferential factors such as the gender, coat color, personality, etc. The cherry on top was upon pick up at 8 weeks Teddy was healthy, socialized, potty trained, and vaccinated. Lindy pours love onto these dogs and puppies and treats her clients with tremendous respect. The puppies are happy and safely kept in an immaculate environment until sent home and I love that each family is celebrated with a photo to commemorate the occasion. Definitely worth the WAIT! Chuck Hahn Best dog ever!!! Worth the wait. He came home perfect! Testimonials Happy Faces Your happiness is our happiness, your success, our success. We take great pride in each and every home we complete with our dogs. We did tons of research. We wanted a dog that did not shed, was hypoallergenic, and had a good temperament. Those dogs are hard to find! We finally came across a very special Australian Labradoodle. We found our Rosie through my best friend who knew the owner of Australian Labradoodles of Texas. Her temperment is what we were really drawn to. She is so calm, obedient, and really wants to please you. She rings a bell when she needs to go outside and walks right next to you on her leash! We feel so lucky that we get to call her ours! To say that Miles has changed our lives for the better would be an extreme understatement! From the moment we set our eyes on him in your videos, we knew he was special, and he has shown us that a million times over. He is a sweet and affectionate dog who loves his family fiercely, acting protective when he needs to, yet demonstrates such a docile and gentle temperament to other people, especially small children who love to pet and squeeze his fluffiness. I had no intention of adding another dog to the mix! After several weeks, I finally pulled the trigger and we brought him home! Charley Brown was the perfect addition to our family and I would recommend these pups to anyone looking for a good family dog. All of our puppies come with Socialization.
General Appearance and Temperament The Australian Labradoodle moves with agility and grace when active yet is compact with substance and medium boning. Brimming with joy and energy when free, they become relaxed and quiet when handled. Australian Labradoodles have a free flowing wavy or curly coat that is low to non-shedding. The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle comes in three basic sizes. There should be no appreciable difference in the general appearance of the Standard, Medium, or Miniature sizes except in the actual size difference. Medium 17 to 20 inches tall and weighs between 31 and 45 pounds as an adult. Standard 21 to 24 inches tall and weighs between 46 and 65 pounds as an adult. This graphic will help you to better understand how big your puppy will become. Coat One of the benefits of buying a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle is that you will know with a high degree of certainty what the coat type will be when your puppy becomes an adult. Australian Labradoodles have a single coat ranging from straight to loose curls or wool. Ideally, the curls should not be tight and the coat should not be too thick or fluffy. They can be allergy friendly to many people who have dog related allergies. The coat is as non-shedding as any dog can be. However, in some of the early generations, F1, F2 and F1b, more shedding can occur, but shedding is rarely seen in the multi generation Labradoodle. The coat types are as follows: Fleece The Fleece coat texture should be light and silky, often described as feeling like Angora. The fleece coat can be from loosely waved giving an almost straight appearance to deeply waved with soft curls. The fleece coat has been found to be allergy friendly and is low to non-shedding. Wool The wool coat is denser to the feel like a sheep's wool. It is extremely rare for a wool coat to shed, and is the preferred coat type for families with severe allergies. The Australian Labradoodle has a single coat. Both the Fleece and the Wool coat should be of a soft texture. Color The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle comes in a variety of many beautiful colors and patterns. Lighting can change the colors, with summer sun often causing the outer coat to highlight in lighter shades. Silvering or graying may give the coat a distinctive look. Coats often have a slight to dramatic amount of softening of color over the years. Each combination is beautiful in its unique expression. See examples of each color below. Black Pigment Colors: All dogs in this category have dark brown eyes, black noses, gums and paw pads. The descriptions may range in name from black, blue, or silver to cream, apricot, gold or red. Chocolate Pigment Colors: All dogs in this category have brown noses and lighter, usually hazel, eyes and brown paw pads. Chocolate and caramel are the two basic colors in this category. Intensity of the hue in chocolate and caramel can range from a dark to light. Puppies coats may start out darker in tone, then soften in time with hues of cream. Color names for chocolate range from cafe, milk chocolate, and latte to lavender and parchment. The caramel coloration ranges from light to a dark rich shading of the yellow gene. As we can see from the Australian Labradoodle size chart above, these Doodles come in three main size categories — Mini, Medium, and Standard. The smallest of the bunch is the Mini Australian Labradoodle. The Minis weigh around 15 to 30 pounds and stand about 13 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder. The largest are the Standard Australian Labradoodles who weigh between 50 and 70 pounds and stand about 21 to 24 inches tall. The Medium Australian Labradoodle fits right between the Minis and Standard Australian Labradoodles, with a weight of 30 to 50 pounds, and a height of 17 to 20 inches. F1 vs F1b vs F2b Australian Labradoodle If you know a little bit about Doodles, you know that their generation can play a key role in determining their size. For example, Labradoodles have only Labrador Retriever and Poodle genes. They can be either F1, F1b, F2, F3, and so on. In contrast, the Australian Labradoodles are F5 or higher, and can have a total of up to six breeds in their lineage. As a result, the Australian Labradoodle generations are a lot more complicated. This usually translates to their first 6 months of life. After that, their growth will slow down, until it plateaus at their full adult weight roughly around 1 to 1. By their first birthday, the Australian Labradoodle has most likely reached their full adult height. But we can typically expect them to continue gaining some more weight and girth over the upcoming months. Generally, smaller dogs reach their full size earlier than larger pups. Between .Medium Australian Labradoodles typically reach half their adult weight between 3. They will then plateau at their full adult weight around 11 to 13 months old. Similarly, they will then plateau at their full adult weight between 11 and 13 months of age. However, Minis might reach their full adult size slightly earlier than the Medium Australian Labradoodles. Mini Australian Labradoodles weigh about 15 to 30 pounds and stand 13 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder. Medium Australian Labradoodles weigh about 30 to 50 pounds with a height of 17 to 20 inches. The Standard Labradoodle, the largest of them, weighs between 50 and 70 pounds and stands 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder. For example, a high quality diet is crucial for proper growth, development, and overall health. Temperament and Soundness are the two KEY elements in a good family companion; they must not be sacrificed for any reason. General Appearance: The Australian Labradoodle should be athletic and graceful, yet compact with substance and medium boning. Joyful and energetic when free, soft and quiet when handled. They should approach people in a happy friendly manner with eye to eye contact. Keen to learn and easy to train. They have a free flowing wavy or curly coat that does not shed and is possibly non-allergenic. Size: Sizes are still "somewhat inconsistent" with no definition between male and female at this time. Accurate prediction of size, even by an experienced breeder, is not expected at this time. Size is measured to the top of the shoulder blades withers while standing squarely on a level surface. Much care is needed when breeding both the large and small dogs. Large dogs can suffer from rapid growth that can lead to structural problems. Soundness is of utmost importance. Over size is a major fault. Care must be taken to keep the miniature Australian Labradoodle a solid athletic robust dog. The dwarfing of dogs can lead to many genetic and temperament disorders. Minimum size attention is of the utmost importance to maintain a healthy little dog. Most Australian Labradoodles will weigh more than their height reflects. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. When happy, relaxed or at play will prance and skim the ground lightly. Excessive tightness in the hips will produce a stilted action and is considered a fault. Tail: Set relatively high and preferred to be carried in a saber, can be carried below the topline or "gaily" above. Curled possum type tails are undesirable. Head: Sculptured, broad, well defined eyebrows, medium stop, eyes set well apart, nose to stop slightly longer than stop to occiput. Foreface shorter than skull. The head should be clean and chiseled and fully coated as on the body, legs and tail. The Muzzle is measured from the tip of the nose to the stop. The skull is measured from the occiput to the stop and does not include the muzzle. Ears: Set moderately flat against the head, base should be level with the eye. Minimal white on the chest and toes is acceptable. Light chalky coarse hairs kemp sprinkled through a dark coat is permissible but very undesirable. Parti patched and Phantoms, are considered an acceptable color. Phantoms are any shading or two tone coloration such as a Black dog with lower legs showing a soft toning of silver or gold or a dog born dark with a golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. True pure solid colors with the exception of Silver and Cafe' are highly prized and are the ideal for the Australian Labradoodle. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the top coat. To us this indicates we should only be breeding dogs that are laid back, calm, loving, easily trained, family friendly loving adults and kids , fun loving and comical. We are very proud to announce that we have puppies from each of our parents in therapy service, some have passed Guide Dog testing, on is in training as a mold detection service dog. We also work very hard 0 to 8 weeks to handle and train your puppy under a top canine behavior model. Labradoodle Health Health is always an issue for us and our families. The question is typically asked, "What are the health issues in the labradoodle and Australian labradoodle breed". Since these are the issues in the breed, we screen all our breeding dogs for all of these. We have generations of Health tested clear dogs. It is the responsibility of conscientious breeders to health test their breeding stock and protect the Australian Labradoodle from developing recurring genetic disorders in the breed. It is good to keep in mind that the Australian Labradoodle is a family companion; we do not want the heartache of illness or the expense of less than sound dogs. Practical research indicates that the fleece and wool coats of the Australian Labradoodle are very successful with Asthma and Allergy sufferers. In these infant years of breeding the Australian Labradoodle some throwbacks will occur, with wiry, sparse, or combination coats that have partial shedding. These dogs need not be discarded for breeding, but should be assessed as to their soundness of body and temperament. Many of these individuals offer valuable hybrid genetics and will breed on excellent offspring. The same applies to dogs displaying undesirable color or size traits. In order to produce a breed with a broad genetic base of quality dogs, haste should be made slowly. Genetic resources must be kept broad to protect the Australian Labradoodle breed from the disasters that many other breeds are suffering, "the genetic dead end". Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodle dogs and puppies. No two families are the same, and their needs for their four legged members differ. We breed three different sizes of Australian Labradoodles so you can find the perfect pup to complete your family. The height of each breed size is measured from the wither, or the shoulder blades to the ground, because this gives the most accurate and reliable measurement for dog height. Weight is based on a healthy range for a full grown Australian Labradoodle of each size. Read more about the sizes below to help you determine which Doodle is right for you! Miniature Height: 14 to 16 inches from the wither Weight: 15 to 25 Lbs Miniature Australian Labradoodles are ideal for families who live in apartments or rental homes with breed and pet weight restrictions. Medium Height: 17 to 20 inches from the wither Weight: 30 to 40 Lbs Medium Australian Labradoodles are slightly larger than Miniatures, and can weigh up to forty pounds. At twenty-two to twenty-four inches from the wither and up to sixty-five pounds, these pups bring the happy, huggable breed to the big dog table. Standards are ideal for active people with a lot of space, as they make good running partners and love to play. Reserve A Puppy Today! The Australian Labradoodle is a very active breed, and needs adequate space and exercise. For example, Miniature Australian Labradoodles would fare better in an apartment than a Medium Doodle. Likewise, a Medium Labradoodle would be better suited to a small house than a Standard. All three sizes are easy to train and very smart. They get along well with other dogs, so they make great additions to pre-started menageries, and are protective and loyal but not aggressive, so they are great with kids. These family friendly, sociable dogs are ideal for anyone seeking companionship and unconditional canine love, from singles to couples, kid-free homes and big families alike. In the early days, the Labradoodle was simply a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle, F1 and F1b are both early generation Labradoodles. Whereby the "Australian Labradoodles" are also know as "Multi-generational" Labradoodles. Labradoodles bred to Labradoodles for many generations and can be traced back to the two kennels that started the lines of Australian Labradoodles. In the late 's, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor both in Australia, started breeding the lines we know today. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. Their mission is to maintain and improve the quality and soundness of the Australian Labradoodles, and to carefully monitor the further development of the breed. All member breeders are carefully screened to help ensure the future of the Australian Labradoodle. Member breeders must breed to the highest standards.
