Golden Retrievers do not have a specific time or age to begin to swim. Although, some are born with a phobia for water, a condition known as Aquaphobia. When this happens, it takes the dog a much longer time to adjust and even start to go close to water. To achieve this, start by putting it in small water bodies like pools, bathtubs, and shallow parts of the stream. Then, you should place your palm under its belly and chest and allow it just to swirl around and move its legs. Can Golden Retrievers puppy swim? Golden Retrievers puppies can swim. Swimming comes naturally to them. They may, however, require extra practice that goes a long way in helping them learn and get comfortable and relaxed around water. In addition, they may not have the flexibility in their body or be confident enough to swim independently, which is why extra care and attention should be given to them in the first few months when they start swimming. Can a two-month-old Golden Retriever swim? No, two-month-old Golden Retrievers can not swim because, at two months, they are only just being introduced to the water body to make them acquainted with the water. They may learn how to swim just after two swimming lessons. Take breaks in between swimming lessons Do not make the mistake of letting your puppy get tired on the water. Always give it short swimming lessons to make it want to go for more of the water. If you always stress them, they might develop a hatred for water, anxiety attacks, or may even become aquaphobic because the water scares them. Always consider the health of your dog Most two-month-old puppies are prone to fall sick due to weather and irregular temperatures in the environment. In addition, at two months old, they are mostly not strong enough to swim. Do not attempt to teach your golden retriever puppy to swim if they are sick or do not have the physical strength and energy in its body to swim. Many Golden Retriever puppies can hit the water for the first time and learn how to swim very quickly. It is best to take precautions and stick near your puppy when they first start swimming to make sure they stay safe. While swimming is a natural instinct for a golden, it still takes a bit of learning and practice for a puppy to figure out how to swim. Many take naturally to the water and will learn to swim with very little encouragement. In fact, a golden is a natural swimmer because they were bred to retrieve birds and other game in the water during hunts. In the past, Golden Retrievers were bred to help retrieve waterfowl that was downed during a hunt. To do this, they would need to have strong swimming muscles to get out into the water, get the animal, and bring it back to their owners. Thanks to this breeding, most Golden Retrievers are just naturally strong swimmers. This article may contain affiliate links and loyalgoldens may earn a commission if a purchase is made. He took to swimming like…well, like a Golden Retriever! How to Keep Your Golden Retriever Safe on the Water Even if your dog does know how to swim, there are a few things that you can do to help keep them safe. Remember the Sunscreen Humans and dogs are quite similar when it comes to sun exposure. While we can agree, there are big differences between the species, there is one similarity in that the sun can be as harmful to the skin of your dog as it is to your own. This will make it easier to swim in the water as they are learning, and will keep them afloat if they get tired. They are not used to this new activity and may not have the endurance to spend that long in the water. If you let them overexert themselves or swim for too long, they can get overly tired. This increases the risk of drowning. Short little spurts into the water are best. This allows your dog to get used to the water and swim a bit, building up her endurance, so she can swim for longer and longer as time goes by. So cute! Discover how to train your Golden Retriever by playing games : 21 games to play with your Golden that will make them smarter and better behaved! Short swims also allow your golden retriever puppy to develop a sense of their own level of endurance. They will begin to learn just how much effort it will take to swim a specific distance. A young puppy will learn the same thing over time. These steps include: Take your puppy to a small, calm lake or swimming pool. You and someone else should go into the water in case something goes wrong. Gently guide your puppy into the water. Let the puppy feel the water a bit before turning back towards the other person you brought with you. Keep them close to the shore or steps of the pool. The best way to do this is to have one of your hands on the stomach and the other at the base of the tail. This is a good time to talk gently to your puppy and be positive and upbeat. Once their legs are under, you should notice that even while holding them, your dog is moving their legs and paddling. This is the time for praise and positive reinforcement to let the dog know they are doing well. The other person on the shore should call for your dog to come to them. You can release the dog a bit, adding a bit of balance as necessary. When you feel they are comfortable and ready, release completely and let them swim the rest of the way. Continue with this. Take them back out into the water and let them swim back to the person on the other shore for as many times as it takes. Conclusion Your Golden Retriever puppy is sure to love spending time on the water with you and the rest of the family. There are a few simple precautions you can take to make sure that your puppy will be safe when they bounce into the water. But if you learn how to watch them, protect them from getting too tired or too burnt, and you teach them how to swim, your puppy will have the time of their lives. Some retrievers are scared of water and that can make it hard to teach him to swim. In this post we teach you how we go about when teaching our golden retriever puppies how to swim. Once she becomes comfortable, then you can bring her out to the lake or the sea shore and coax her to try it out. How to introduce puppy to water The first thing that you must remember is that your dog must be trained or must be obedient enough or at least, possess the basic obedient skills before you take him to the waterfront. He needs to know that there is nothing to be afraid of, so take him to the waterfront and make him stand in shallow water. It is a good idea to introduce him to water from a young age. And as he grows up, he becomes more comfortable with getting into water and even diving into the same to fetch items. You need to train your dog to come to you when you call out to him, so that when he is in water, he can come towards you once he hears your summons. Rather than pull the leash, it is safer this way. You can introduce your pup to water when he is just eight weeks old. And once you get him used to water, transitioning from a walk along the shores to a fully fledged swim should not take that long. You can also bring another person as well. Now gently lift your golden retriever in your hands, walk into the water, and then gently submerge your pup but make sure that you have your hands under his belly. Your pup is a little panicked at this stage; so you need to talk to him gently, coo in his ear if necessary, but make him feel relaxed. Now, when your golden retriever starts paddling his legs, praise him and use positive reinforcement to make sure that he understands. It is important that you do not force your retriever to swim or stress her out, she must learn to love the water on her own Now gently release your pup and point her towards the shore and see if she can make her way towards the same. Continue the same process and extend the duration each day until she starts swimming with pleasure. Congratulations, you have managed to make your golden retriever take to water. But here are a few safety tips that you may want to review, before you end up throwing your retriever into the deep end of the pool. If you have a dog that is very afraid of the water, an alternate approach would be that you start out by first finding a unpopulated place with calm and shallow water. Get your dog used to the sight of the ocean or lake by walking your puppy on the beach. Try to get close to the water and encourage your puppy to get her paws wet. When the puppy is comfortable, you can start steering your dog towards more deeper waters. Remember to have the leach on while doing this exercise, so that you more easily can steer the puppy. It is also not necessary that the puppy swims the first time while you are doing this exercise. The most important part of this exercise is that you show your dog that the ocean is not dangerous. Our puppy Umbra loves long walks by the ocean! Safety Tips: Do not throw your dogs off the pier or into the deep end: if your pup has still not learnt to swim properly, then he can end up drowning. That is why it is important for you to teach your pup all the basics of swimming so that she is prepared for the same. Invest in a flotation device for dogs: This is a good idea and a nice move; you can invest in a flotation device that helps keep your pup afloat as she tries out the basics of swimming. These flotation devices are designed to help your dog to learn swimming and at the same time, stay afloat. For example if you plan to teach your pup how to swim in a fast moving river then it makes perfect sense to try out the flotation device, and anchor the same safely. Bring a buddy: Introducing another dog that loves swimming may well be the trick that will get your retriever into the water. Most dogs follow other dogs and seeing one enjoying swimming is bound to cause your pup to try out the water. But make sure that the dogs get well with each other and do not fight as that somehow defeats the purpose. Swimming pools: These are often the best location to start training your pup. Slow introduction: chances are that your pup is somewhat terrified of water. Given this you may want to help calm down your retriever, talk in soothing tones and introduce her slowly to water. So you need to lead by example, so get into the water slowly and start paddling. Then coax your dog gently to try out the same as well. You can also use a flotation device so that in the event of anything going wrong, he has a safety net. Rewards: One of the most effective ways to train your dog is to offer him a reward after praising him for acceptable behavior. Now, you can employ the same trick at the swimming pool and coax your dog to get into the water. And once she does, use positive reaffirmation to show that you are pleased with her behavior Be supportive: It is important that you are supportive of your pup; remember that she is panicking right about now, and you need to soothe her fears down. Once they start to panic most dogs raise their front paws to get out of the water. This often results in pushing them down further, so make sure that you are supporting your pup during the initial training period. Try placing your hand under her belly, this should help support her as she starts to use her front paws. You can also place a hand under her rump for additional support. Your dog will require additional support until she becomes better versed with the basics of swimming. Four paws: Chances are that your golden retriever will only use her front paws to paddle, so you need to encourage her to use all four paws when swimming. Once she gets the hang of it, encourage her to retrieve small objects. Soon, you should be able to get the message across and your pup would soon know the meaning of these water words. Check the weather as well as the currents: It is important that you check the weather and currents of the local body to assess if it is safe taking your dog out for a swim. Do note that rip tides can be quite powerful and it is never a good idea to take your dog swimming in inclement weather either. It is important that you assess the local conditions including the current tide as well as the weather before you take your dog swimming, And make sure that you go along to supervise her swim, so that you can always jump in after her and rescue her if needed. It is important that you take care to check all the local conditions before you take your retriever for a swim. Next, Feed And Reward Your Dog Now that you have managed to teach your golden retriever to swim, there are a few things that you need to take care of right away: Wash and pat: It is important that you use lukewarm water to wash and pat her dry. Now, she can adjust to the room temperature and feel comfortable. Hot food: Make sure that you have selected a nutritious brand of food for your dog. It is important that she nourishes her body soon and hot piping food should do the trick. Do remember that meat happens to be the main source of nutrition for your dog so select food items which feature the same. Consult a vet: You can always consult the vet about the best food items to purchase for your dog. Small portions: Do remember that your golden retriever is still a pup so you need to feed her in small portions. If you are not sure about the schedule, you can, consult a vet and the number of times that you would be required to feed your dog, in the course of a single day. It is a good idea to go in for stainless steel bowls for both water as well as dinner. The one reason that you may want to opt for stainless steel bowls is on account of the fact that they come less bacteria. Health treats: You can also provide your pup with some health treats. It is important that you do not force her to get into water as that can serve to increase her anxiety levels. Just follow the steps listed here and you should be able to teach your dog to swim in no time at all. And in due course, you should be able to take your pup for a swim. Just remember that it is important that you support your pup all through the various stages and ensure that she does not have to panic and that you are with her, during this process. And make sure that you assess the local conditions, prior to heading to office. Soon, your pup will not bark on seeing the water or start whining the moment she ends up in war. But as mentioned earlier, these are just during the initial stages and soon you should be able to watch your golden retriever have tons of fun, swimming in the water. Related Articles.

Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. But, you can also find Labradoodles with different brown markings. For instance: phantom, tri color, abstract, parti, and more. Labradoodles can inherit any of the shades or markings possible in their original purebred ancestors — which will vary depending on whether you have an Australian Labradoodle or an American Labradoodle. Color Fading in Brown Labradoodles There are two major ways that your Labradoodle may have a faded coat. A grey coat from birth can be caused by the dilute gene. This gene dilutes the regular brown coloring into something paler, resulting in silver Labradoodles. Puppies will have this from birth, so you will never see a rich, or dark brown coloring on them. Life Span Did You Know? A Labradoodle is a popular designer dog breed. It is a cross between a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. However, it did not become popular until when the mix was specifically bred to create hypoallergenic guide dogs. Featured Labradoodle Article.

But, there are plenty of times when it will become a little too dry and dull. So, why do French Bulldogs get dry noses and what can we do about it to ease any discomfort? Why does my Frenchie have a dry nose? It could moisten up again quickly. But, regular issues with a dry nose could be a sign of a deeper issue with their diet, allergies, or other health issues. This is also true if the nose becomes excessively dry or cracked. So, make sure to take the condition seriously, invest in the right products to soothe the nose, and consult your vet whenever necessary. The good news here is that there are lots of common reasons for Frenchie to end up with dry noses. Other factors such as environmental or dietary issues could play their part too. However, regularly cracked nose or dry noses with additional symptoms could be a sign of something else. That is why it is important to find the cause and then work on the right treatment method. The truth is that dry noses are something that most Frenchie owners will deal with at some point, and to varying degrees. That is why it is vital that you take the time to better understand the causes, treatments, and other considerations. The key points that you need to remember here are as follows. The brachycephalic genetics of French Bulldogs make them more prone to dryness around the nose. This issue may become worsened via environmental conditions, allergies, or other illnesses. Extremely cracked noses may be a sign of a more significant condition or illness. Allergy relief could also help them with other conditions like skin allergies and dandruff. Natural balms work really well to soothe cracked noses. Your vet will always help with concerns and diagnoses if you are worried about your pet. These are just some of the shorter points to help ease your mind if your pet currently has a cracked nose for an unknown reason. Is it common for Frenchies to get dry noses? This issue is more common in brachycephalic dogs because of their facial structure. One simple way for dogs to keep their noses moist themselves is to lick them with their tongue. That is easier said than done when you are a Frenchie and your nose is so far away from your mouth. They will lick their noses when they can but may go a little longer without doing so. Also, they are unlikely to lick their noses when they sleep, which can allow for a drier-than-average nose when they wake up. With that said, it is important to differentiate between a dry nose and a cracked nose. Cracked noses are much rougher with tough bits of flaky skin. Think about it in the same way as your lips. They can get drier in the winter and may need a little more moisture from lip-balm. More problematic lips can get a lot rougher and chapped. Are cracked noses harmful to your Frenchie in any way? Again, in the way that chapped lips are uncomfortable and can lead to bleeding, a dry cracked nose could be equally annoying for dogs. The last thing you want is for your dog to feel any discomfort or pain on a part of their anatomy that is so sensitive. Then there is the other issue of dogs needing their nose to smell. There is a concern that dryness and other issues around the nose could impede their ability to smell and the sensitivity of the tissues What causes French Bulldog dry noses? In order to help keep our Frenchie noses wet and healthy, it helps to understand the causes of this issue. There are a few possible causes that lead to a little dryness now and then. Other factors could cause more frequent cases or those issues of cracked skin. These include the following: 1 Weather conditions This cause is familiar to any dog owner that deals with drier skin in the winter. Colder weather can make skin conditions a lot worse, and even those of us without any diagnosed condition will need to moisturize our hands and face more often. Therefore, it makes sense that our pets go through something similar. Senior dogs may struggle to retain moisture in their skin and this is more obvious in the nose. They may also be more likely to sleep a little longer, which makes the nose even drier when they wake up. There is the possibility of a lack of moisture in the skin because of a more general lack of hydration. This could be as simple as that your dog has just woken up for a long sleep and is yet to drink. But, a disinterest in water or other symptoms of dehydration are cause for concern. Skin conditions are closely related to allergies, whether that means reactions to food, parasites, or environmental factors. French Bulldog dandruff , which you can read more about in our other guide, is a similar issue. So, the two effects may go side-by-side. There are cases where the problems with the skin are a symptom of autoimmune disorders or respiratory illness. In some cases, there may be additional symptoms to take note of. This is a condition where the body produces too much keratin, which then leads to tougher, rougher patches of skin. The likelihood of dryness in the nose makes it a common site for these rougher patches of skin. Unfortunately, this mostly happens for an unknown reason and many vets will see it as a cosmetic issue. Should you go and see your vet about your Frenchies dry nose? It depends on the extent of the problem. A little dryness now and then is normal. Extreme cracking could be the sign of something worse, so here it might help to call on an expert opinion. Your vet can perform tests and see if there is anything else going on, especially if you notice any other issues like sores around the nose, breathing issues, or other signs of poor health. Whatever the reason, they can advise you on what to do next. This includes advice on providing a better environment at home, using products to soothe the skin, and making any necessary changes that could minimize the risk of allergic reactions. What can you do to keep your Frenchies nose moist? Now you know some of the causes, you can figure out the best solution for your pet. As mentioned above, your vet should be able to help you out with all kinds of solutions. But, there is a lot that you can do yourself to provide relief and reduce the frequency of the problem. You can: 1 Consider the atmosphere of the home Dry noses and skin could be due to little more than the atmosphere in the home and the current weather conditions. It is second nature to come home after a long walk in colder temperatures and put the central heating on. But, this can create a drier environment that damages the skin further. A dehumidifier could be a good investment, not just for your Frenchie but for the whole family. These devices will improve the air quality and lessen the risk of skin drying out. Easy access to fresh clean water is essential, whatever the season, so that dogs stay hydrated and healthy. Some pet owners that leave their dogs alone for long periods may accidentally neglect this. It is also important to use safe water bowls, especially if there is a risk of reactions to plastic. Ditch the plastic and bring in clean, safe metal bowls instead 3 Consider a change in diet if the problem is due to food allergies Skin complaints and dry noses via food allergies are rectifiable with some patience and thought. It all comes down to determining what ingredient your dog is allergic to. This can take time as you try different brands and recipes and see how your dog reacts. Consider some fish-based options like sardines for extra Omega-3 oils or an LID option for smaller dogs. What can you do to soothe overly-dry and cracked noses? These solutions are great for dogs where they only experience a little dryness that is easily corrected with environmental stimuli. It is a little different for cracked noses or regular occurrences. The discomfort here and the risk of tissue damage means it pays to treat the skin directly. Your dog can receive immediate relief and a lot of fuss and attention at the same time. Think of it like using a balm on your own skin. The right products can soften the area very quickly and make us feel a lot better. Natural balms with essential oils and butters offer on-going relief and soften the skin on the nose. There are some great products out there that you can buy. Or, you could try making your own versions of these balms if you can source the right ingredients. The best natural solutions should be safe for use on dogs and humans. Therefore, you might find that you have a great new winter moisturizer for the whole family. Well, in reality, a dog's nose can alternate between wet and dry in response to various factors. However, when the nose becomes so dry that it flakes or cracks, there's a problem. Scent is arguably your Frenchie's most important sense. If your Frenchies nose is overly dry, they're uncomfortable and can't efficiently explore the surroundings. Your dog's external skin must be moist and spongy for the sensory organ within the nose to operate at full capacity. Unfortunately, dry noses are particularly common for dogs with flat faces like French Bulldogs. Your French Bulldog's nose could be dry for a number of reasons. It may be due to various changes in their lifestyle or routine. Some common causes for a dry nose on a Frenchie include: Weather When your Frenchie stays too close to a heat source, his nose is bound to become dry. This may be as a result of too much sun exposure. The same way you can get sunburns on the skin is the same way dogs can get sunburns on their noses. To prevent this, you can use pet-safe sunblocks. If your Frenchie's nose gets too dry during the winter, it may be from sleeping near fireplaces. Allergies Frenchies are often prone to contact, seasonal, and food allergies. Allergens can cause your Frenchie's nose to dry up and even crack. They could be allergic to fur, pollen, and dander from other pets. Additionally, certain drinks, foods, and medications could result in allergic reactions to your Frenchie. Plastics are also a predominant cause of nose sensitivity among many dogs. So you could avoid plastic bowls and toys. It is also recommended to avoid the use of plastic buckles in your French Bulldog's harnesses or clothing since BPA toxins can still enter your Frenchie's blood stream. Consult with your vet about your Frenchie's particular sensitivities. Dehydration Your Frenchie may be dehydrated due to insufficient intake of water. Make sure your Frenchie drinks lots of fresh water, particularly in hot, humid weather. They can rule out problems with the kidneys or diabetes, which can cause dehydration. Lazier dogs, particularly seniors, are more prone to dry noses. Dogs lick their noses continually to increase the secretion of the moist-causing hormones. This includes neurological problems that cause excessive licking as well as autoimmune disorders. Make sure to see your vet on a regular basis and report any concerning symptoms. They may suggest lab work to rule out a serious problem. Particularly because you know that French Bulldogs are prone to various health challenges. But does a dry nose mean that your Frenchie is sick? Generally, no. A persistent dry nose can definitely be uncomfortable for your Frenchie. If you notice any of these symptoms along with the dry nose, you should get your Frenchie booked in with your vet as soon as possible. It may be an indication of a more severe medical condition like an auto-immune disease. Brachycephalic flat-faced breeds like French Bulldogs are more prone to dry noses due to their flat faces. Most of them contain substances that are harmful to dogs. This includes baby oil, vaseline, mineral oil, petroleum jelly, Aquaphor, and Neosporin. These oils may be effective but they are all derived from petroleum. Shea Butter Some people use shea butter to soften their dry skin. It also works really well on dry dog noses. You can also use it to soothe his dry elbows and paws. Almond Oil Almond oil contains various important vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals that can soothe dry, irritated dog noses. As always, apply just a little. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is one of the safest and most effective, pet-friendly, and natural moisturizers you can find. It also contains various vitamins and minerals. However, once your Frenchie gets used to it, you can apply it liberally on their nose whenever you need to. Cocoa Seed Butter Cocoa seed butter is effective for softening and conditioning dry, chafed, cracked, and sunburned dog noses. You can also use it to moisturize rough paw pads and elbows. It will also include some tried and tested French Bulldog dry nose remedy solutions that will help your pup deal with the dryness. Why does my French Bulldog have a dry nose? A French Bulldog with a dry nose can be down to a reaction to the weather, indoor heating, or an allergy. If your Frenchie has a dry and crusty nose, it could be a case of nasal hyperkeratosis. Extreme dryness develops when the nose tissues starts to dry to the extreme, get crusty, and develop layers of excessive crusty tissue. I will be talking more in depth about nasal hyperkeratosis in French bulldogs towards the lower half of this guide to nose problems. If your Frenchie has a warm, dry nose, it can be a little alarming, especially since one of the drawbacks to owning one of these charming little dogs is that they are prone to a plethora of health risks see all health problems here. That said, does a dry nose indicate you have a sick pup on your hands? Generally, no. If you notice any combination of these symptoms, you should definitely get your Frenchie booked in with your veterinarian as soon as possible, as it could be an indicator of a more serious medical condition, such as an auto-immune disease. This is what a healthy French Bulldog puppy nose should look like. If anything, you can expect your French Bulldog to struggle with a dry, cracked, or crusty nose throughout their lifetime. Brachycephalic flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs are more prone to having dry noses as they often struggle to lick this area of their face. However, there are also a host of other environmental reasons why your Frenchie might be struggling with a dry nose, including allergies, dehydration, or age. If you notice that your Frenchie seems to have a dry nose more often than not, or that their nose is starting to crack or get crusty, it would be a good idea to keep an eye on their routine as there might be something in their surroundings that is causing this to happen. For those pups struggling with a painful or chronically dry nose, you can look at using a dog-friendly moisturizer to help them with the discomfort you can see my recommendations further down the page. Common reasons why a Frenchie might have a dry nose Aside from their predisposition to having a dry nose, there are also a number of other reasons why your pup might be struggling with this uncomfortable condition. Unless your Frenchie struggles to lick their own nose, you can expect the nose to be damp again within a few minutes of waking. Heating Another factor to take into consideration is where your Frenchie might be sleeping or resting during the colder parts of the year. This should correct itself shortly after they move away from the heating source, but if your Frenchie has made a habit of this for a while, it might have resulted in their nose becoming so dry that it has begun to crack. Claude the Frenchie gets a dry and cracked nose during winter when the heating is put on. As a general rule of thumb, dogs should be drinking one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. An average-sized French Bulldog typically weighs in at around twenty-eight pounds, so they should be drinking twenty-eight ounces, or somewhere in the region of three cups of fresh water each day. If you notice your Frenchie neglecting their water bowl, check them over to see if there are any other signs of dehydration. These include: Thick saliva. Increased panting or difficulty with breathing. Dry eyes that can appear sunken. Lack of energy. Dry and sticky gums. If you press the gums, the skin should turn white for a second but then return to a healthy pink shortly after. If the area takes a while to return to its normal color, this is another strong indicator of dehydration. One of the most common reasons for dehydration is too much exercise. Frenchies are especially susceptible to this as it takes much less activity to wear them out, especially compared to other breeds. Frenchies need to have small bouts of exercise throughout the day to avoid over-exhaustion, and if you can, it would be worth bringing a small water bottle with you so that they can stay hydrated while out and about, especially during the summer. If you notice that your Frenchie is simply not drinking from their bowl, try giving the dish a thorough clean with soap and water before filling it up with fresh water again. Allergies A dry nose might also indicate that your Frenchie is struggling with an allergic reaction. If an allergy is the cause, you will likely see other symptoms such as: Itchiness, which can be general or localised. Inflamed skin. This condition causes a protein overgrowth and leads to a dry nose that will eventually crust and peel if not cared for properly. At various times throughout the day or even years, a Frenchies nose will become very dry. This does not mean to say that your fury friend is sick. A crusty nose can create a fair bit of discomfort and should be addressed quickly. As with any symptom the first thing you will want to do is get a proper diagnosis from your vet so as to understand the cause and best treatment available because you want to be sure there are no other health problems. When keratin has grown a fair amount, this will cause peeling to occur. It starts to become hard and then flakes off. This can be managed by moisturising your dogs with special ointments or lotions. There are a number of products made by the Natural Dog Company that will keep the nose in optimal health by moisturising the skin for hours after application. Bread Trait Since Frenchies are prone to having a nose that can crust over aswell as having their snout pressed in Brachycephalic , it creates a breeding ground for bacteria growth. Flat-faced breeds like Frenchies and Pugs cannot reach their nose with their tongue to moisten it. As such, skin fold dermatitis is a very common problem for French Bulldogs. When this happens, a Vet should be consulted. The good news is that there are a number of creams and ointments available to help manage the bacteria and fungus growth. A Vet may also prescribe some shampoos to help control the bacteria. Allergies Frenchies are susceptible to allergies due to their short snout. Allergic reactions include other symptoms like persistent sneezing, itching, hives, watery fluid from the nose, and ear infections. At times you will notice a clear discharge from the nostrils. These allergies can create discomfort for your Frenchie and a Vet may prescribe an allergy medication. In addition, diet also plays an important role in managing their allergies. Therefore, it is very important that you keep a close watch on the colour of the discharge because infection can result. If you notice a yellow or green discharge, then you should consult with your Vet. Environment In the summer, exposure to sun and dry air can cause a Frenchies nose to get crusty or flaky. In Winter, the cold air can also cause a Frenchies nose to dry up. Further, those Frenchies who like to curl up in front of a heater for long periods of time will cause their nose to dry up. Using a good quality lotion can help control this. Dehydration Strenuous exercise or hot temperatures can cause severe dehydration, which then causes a Frenchies nose to dry out. As soon as you notice a dry nose, also make sure to check the gums and get in the routine of monitoring your Frenchies gums. This is particularly important if they lead a very active lifestyle. Properly hydrated gums should be pink and moist to the touch, while gums that are dry, tacky, and pale indicate dehydration. Keep fresh water available at all times and remember dogs should drink water regularly throughout the day. To give your dog the best chance at avoiding nose problems, owners should be willing to apply ointment on the nose daily, as well as making sure you watch for any breathing difficulties. When you wash your Frenchie, make sure you are cleaning under the folds of the skin, and drying in between as well. It is also wise to clean the folds with hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria and prevent an infection from forming. Is their nose drier during certain times of the day or year? How often does it happen? How long does the dryness last? As you track nose condition, consider the common causes listed above to help you pinpoint the reason. Same with new household products like floor cleaners, carpet deodorizers, and laundry detergents, which can cause reactions in sensitive dogs. The best part? This balm really works and that is why we are offering it here in Australia. Take note of other symptoms like fever, dry eye, lethargy, vomiting or diarrhoea, or changes in appetite. The UK is a nation of Frenchie lovers — in their survey , Rover put French bulldogs as the fourth most popular breed in the country. One of these is a predisposition to dry noses. Like any dog, scent is the most important sense to French bulldogs, and a dry nose can impede this. This means it gets less moisture, leading to dryness. Whilst our flat-faced Frenchie friends can be more susceptible to a dry and crusty nose, there are several other factors that can cause a dry nose in any breed: The weather, as being exposed to heat, wind or cold can lead to dryness. Age — older dogs are more likely to have drier noses. Allergies — a dry nose can be caused by allergies to things like pollen and dust. Dehydration — after a lot of exercise, your dog might get a dry nose as a result of dehydration. It contains petroleum, which if ingested when they lick their nose, can upset their stomach. If your French bulldog is suffering from dry paws as well as a sore snout, check out our blog on how to treat dry dog paws! Looking for some inspiration for new products for your pup?

He loves his poodle, Riley, and has been known to play with cats on occasion, even though he's allergic to them. Other interests include ice cream, riding his bicycle, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He lives in Iowa. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on December 9, I wish I could be as excited about anything as this golden retriever is upon meeting his two new puppy brothers. We meet our friend Finn in a TikTok video posted Tuesday from the account thegoldenbros3. He's sitting at the front door of a house, excitedly watching as a man cradling a puppy approaches. He drops down to a knee on the other side of the glass door—an excellent way to introduce two dogs —so Finn can get a better look at his new brother. Finn circles the human with a wagging tail and even rises up on his hind legs to investigate his new brother. The man lowers the puppy down to Finn's level again, allowing them to sniff each other. Joyously satisfied he has a new friend, Finn retrieves a toy for them to share. Gah, it's too much. In a video posted Wednesday , our guy got to meet both his new golden puppy brothers—Sully and Gus, who I think met Finn in the first video. This video is shorter, but Finn is just as thrilled to see them both. Meanwhile, both the puppies exchange playful paws and nuzzles while they're still in human arms—perhaps remembering their earlier cuddle session. The new trio seems to be doing great, and hopefully Finn can soon teach his baby brothers his best tricks. Was this page helpful? The babies are nursing with the new mom, but one puppy is clearly different from the rest. A male pup with a pistachio green hue can be seen atop the pile, with the owner zooming in to give viewers a closer look. A stock photo shows golden retriever puppies. A TikTok video of nursing golden retrievers reveals that one of them is colored green, a rare occurrence. They may sound made-up, but green golden retrievers are real, although the reason they exist is pretty gross. The green coloring is caused by biliverdin, a chemical that creates bile, according to Rover. When a dog is pregnant, the hormones can cause changes in her bodily functions. This can include her poo, which can turn green because of extra biliverdin. When puppies are born, they usually pass their "meconium"—aka their first poo—within 48 hours. Occasionally, they do this while still inside the womb. If the mom dog has high levels of biliverdin and the developing puppy passes the meconium early, this can lead to high levels of bile in the birth sac. If the puppy has light-colored fur, the pigment of the bile can stain its coat, turning the animal green. This process isn't harmful to the dog, just extremely uncommon. The phenomenon is not unique to golden retrievers and can occur with any breed if the pup has light-toned fur.

If you want someone to keep you company or provide warm cuddles, an adorable dog will surely fit the bill. And why not, when owning a dog has undeniable mood-boosting benefits? However, one truth remains: having a dog can also be financially demanding. What to Consider Before Owning a Dog According to the mental health publication HelpGuide, playing with a dog can elevate serotonin and dopamine levels. But taking care of dogs, particularly the younger ones, can also be physically taxing and financially demanding. With that, you need to be emotionally and financially prepared before you take home a pooch. Here are some things you need to consider before getting a dog. Apart from paying the puppy price in the Philippines, can you pay for everything your dog will need, from food to medicine and veterinary care? Remember that these are not just one-time expenses. If you live in a condo or a small apartment, does your landlord allow dogs? Is there a fenced yard where they can play off-leash, or is there enough indoor space for your dog to roam around safely? If you live in a house with stairs or a balcony, or on a busy street with no gate, consider these danger zones. Think about how you can put up safety measures for your dog and make your home as pet-friendly as possible. Moreover, you must also prepare for your personal space to be invaded once you have a dog. No matter how much you clean your house or train your dog, there will always be a mess when there are dogs around. You feed and groom them. You potty-train them, clean after them, take them out for walks and playtime, and bring them to the vet for their check-ups. In short, dogs will take up a lot of your time and energy. You may have to sacrifice your me time or hobbies for cuddles, walks, training, and playtime with your dog. If you live with a roommate, a significant other, or family members, they must also be on board with your plans to be a fur parent. Its distinctive underbite creates its homely appeal. This breed also charms its owners with its affectionate and friendly demeanor. The life expectancy of a Shih Tzu is 10 to 18 years, so you can enjoy many happy years loving and taking care of it. They can be goofy, too. However, remember that these dogs are athletic and require regular exercise. Keep them active and physically preoccupied. Also, make sure that your home has an air-conditioning system. They have thick coats which resemble that of a lion. This pup is ideal for people living alone or with a small family. Training is needed, especially at a young age, to help them manage their territorial tendencies. Golden Retrievers are commonly described as friendly, intelligent, and confident. Aggression is rarely observed in them, and they have a very gentle disposition. Owing to their mild and friendly personality, Golden Retrievers make great emotional support dogs and guides for the blind. The American Kennel Club describes them as kind, active, and outgoing. Back then, these dogs were used for hunting, detection, and tracking. These days, they function as therapy dogs and guides for the disabled. While pleasant and friendly, these dogs bark a lot. They could use some training here. Usually bred for companionship, Bichons are playful yet gentle dogs that get along well with kids and other pets. This makes a Bichon Frise a lovely addition to a family with children. They love cuddles and lots of playtimes since they have an athletic disposition. You can say that Beagles are people pleasers because they love making friends with strangers. Yes, this breed is sociable and natural people pleasers. When you have one, expect that it will demand your undivided attention. However, Poms can be quite willful, dominant, and stubborn. You can curb such dispositions by giving your pet training early on. While it undergoes training, you may witness how intelligent your Pom can be, as it responds well to commands and cues. A Dachshund is your best bet! Dachshunds make excellent watchdogs and loyal companions at home. Well-trained dogs of this breed are also good with kids. The Dachshund is one of the cheapest dog breeds in the Philippines. Chihuahuas prove that. While affectionate, they tend to be very protective of their owners. They may bark at strangers or anyone who comes near their owners. However, their aggression can be dealt with through early training. Note: The prices above are just estimates. Many dogs in shelters and rescue facilities are waiting for their forever homes. Abandoned aspins and other pups also deserve the same kind of love and attention that purebreds receive. Dog Adoption Tips But before you proceed with the adoption, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. Was it a stray dog, or did its previous owners surrender it? Was it abused? Check Its Health This should be easy, as reputable shelters and rescue organizations maintain updated records of their dogs. They also have veterinary partners to ensure the pups are in good shape. Before you leave the shelter, ask if the dog has received obedience training. The cheapest dog is the one you adopt from a friend or neighbor. However, if you adopt from a dog shelter or rescue organization, it may impose some fees for the adoption process. Good thing the fee already covers the following costs of owning a dog:[4] Updated vaccination Treatment for ticks and fleas Spaying or neutering What is the Cost of Owning a Dog in the Philippines? It takes a village to raise a dog. As mentioned, having one under your care is akin to raising a child. You feed them, get them their shots, and shower them with love and attention. To help you with your budget, take note of the following costs. You may be tempted to feed your pup human food such as leftovers. But remember that your food contains ingredients that may be harmful to animals. Your food and treat expenses will depend on your pet's size. For instance, if you have a small dog such as a Pomeranian, a 20kg sack may last up to two months, especially if you properly portion the servings. You can get cheap ropes and squeaky toys online. But do your due diligence first and check if the toy has choking hazards or components potentially dangerous to your pup. You may get your pup a cozy bed. Prices will depend on the size of your dog. Avoid losing your pup by getting it high-quality collars and leashes. The prices of dog hygiene supplies like tear stain wipes, towels, blankets, and pet spray also vary depending on the brand. Dogs also need vitamins and supplements to stay healthy and to keep their coats looking good. You can also buy a Dog GPS Tracker for peace of mind, especially if you have a dog who loves to roam around the neighborhood. If you have a Chow Chow, a poodle, or a Siberian Husky, expect to pay a higher grooming fee. So prepare to add a few hundred pesos for a home grooming session. Other than that, the veterinarian may also recommend some examinations, such as Parvo and heartworm tests. Blood tests, skin scraping, deworming, fecalysis, and a urinalysis may also be required. It can also help reduce undesirable behaviors, like aggressiveness or marking, usually brought on by their heat cycles. Also, the insurance premium is affordable. Some insurance coverage for dogs may also include cash assistance and burial assistance. The 5-in-vaccine protects dogs from canine distemper virus, two types of adenovirus, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. If you want to save money on this vaccine, check with your barangay or local government to see if it offers free pet vaccination services. The cost of medical emergencies varies depending on the procedures and medicines needed. You really have to think hard and assess your situation before adopting or purchasing a fur baby. A dog in household is definitely a blessing, but the cost associated with owning one can also be burdensome. We don't want you to be blindsided by the cost of maintaining a dog. We just want the best for you and your fur baby so choose wisely. When it comes to adopting or purchasing a dog, their size and breed matters. For example, an Alaskan Malamute will cost more to maintain in comparison to a Chihuahua or a small Aspin. All breeds have different needs from how often they need grooming, air conditioning, food sensitivity, health issues, and many more. It might be tempting to buy a Siberian Husky or a Chow Chow, especially when you can find them at a reasonable price, but always consider the reality of owning high maintenance breeds and if you can financial support them. Dog Maintenance Cost in the Philippines We went ahead and researched all the associated costs of owning a dog from their food, treats, grooming, and health needs. We looked at the upper and lower limit in terms of cost. Note that cost may vary depending on your breed size, health requirements, and your geographic location. You should also take your new puppy over to the vet. Although some may provide you with vaccination records and other documentation about your new dog's health, always take it with a grain of salt. It's best practice to have them checked yourself. Your veterinarian might recommend additional tests for Parvo, Distemper, and worms. Vets often check feces, urine, and bloodwork too. These are typically not covered by the check-up fee so best would be to consult your veterinarian for pricing. Remember, don't skip out on these recommendations. It's part of responsible dog ownership. Here's something we found on the PAWS. The Basics. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:.

Life Span Did You Know? The English Cream Golden Retriever is not a separate dog breed from the Golden Retriever ; it is simply a rarer coat color variation. These Golden Retrievers tend to have light white or cream-colored coats instead of honey, golden-brown, or reddish coats. As they are still standard Golden Retrievers, they are recognized by the AKC and other canine organizations and can be registered. An English Cream Golden Retriever has all the same traits as any other Golden Retriever; they are one of the most popular dog breeds and tend to be open, friendly, and make great family pets. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. As long as they are socialized and trained, Goldens tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are even known for being open and friendly with strangers. As one of the kid-friendly dog breeds , Golden Retrievers love attention. These dogs tend to be energetic, full of personality, and are devoted to their families. They also tend to be excitable, which means they can be prone to barking. Training your dog to stop barking early on can help curb this habit and help prevent it from becoming a nuisance. Due to their friendly, gentle nature and intelligence, Goldens can often be found working as service, therapy, or search and rescue dogs. English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. Their high energy and exuberance make them better suited for homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time every day to ensure they get enough attention, mental stimulation, and exercise. Goldens fare well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they bond so closely with their families and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Some potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Cream Golden Retriever can include canine cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. Good breeding practices reduce the risk of these health issues and make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an NCL DNA test, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and a cardiac exam at a minimum. English Cream Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please. This makes them highly trainable dogs that are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Not only are they one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners , but they also tend to excel at obedience competitions and other dog sports. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered basic commands , move on to other activities or more advanced commands. Anything you learn will help and will only strengthen the bond you are building with your puppy. Plus, there are several other benefits of puppy training classes including socialization. English Cream Goldens may have a lighter-colored coat, but they still have the classic longer Golden Retriever coat that will shed a big year-round and heavier as the seasons change. You will want to bathe them as needed and get your Golden professionally groomed a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Trimming nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing is ideal to keep tartar buildup at bay. This, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Golden Retrievers are known for being high-energy dogs. Like Labrador Retrievers , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They do tend to calm down a little as they grow into adulthood, but will still have a lot of energy. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep this dog happy and healthy. Goldens tend to be athletic and versatile dogs. So, once they are done growing and the vet has cleared them for higher-impact activities, you can take them running with you, play frisbee, go hiking, train for dog sports, and more. As one of the most active dog breeds , you will likely run out of energy before they do and they will likely be up for even more activity if you are. An English Cream Golden Retriever generally lives for years on average. Golden Retrievers are one of the dog breeds of famous dogs.

Breeds The link has been copied! The Red Golden Retriever, a captivating and lesser-known variant of the popular Golden Retriever breed, has been steadily capturing the hearts of dog enthusiasts around the world. Its distinguishing feature is the magnificent red coat, which lends the breed an air of elegance and uniqueness. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the appearance, history, and color genetics of the Red Golden Retriever to provide a thorough understanding of this remarkable breed. By delving into the various aspects of this fascinating dog, we aim to help prospective owners and enthusiasts alike appreciate the beauty, charm, and qualities that make the Red Golden Retriever stand out. The breed's iconic friendly and expressive eyes, strong muscular build, and characteristic feathering on the legs, tail, and chest are all present in the Red Golden Retriever However, the coat itself showcases an array of rich red hues that can range from a deep copper to a lustrous red-gold. This eye-catching coloration combined with the breed's inherently endearing disposition makes the Red Golden Retriever a truly exceptional canine companion. The story begins in the 19th century, when Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland embarked on a quest to develop a superior retriever dog. His vision was to create a breed with exceptional retrieving abilities, both on land and in water, as well as an amiable temperament that would make it an ideal family companion. These initial crosses were then further refined by introducing the bloodlines of the Irish Setter and the Bloodhound. The result was a new breed that would come to be known as the Golden Retriever. Exhibiting remarkable retrieving skills, a friendly demeanor, and an affinity for water, the breed quickly gained popularity among dog enthusiasts and hunters alike. As the Golden Retriever breed continued to develop, the Red Golden Retriever emerged as a striking color variation within the breed. This rare and distinctive variant captured the imagination of dog lovers who admired its unique appearance. Over time, breeders began selectively breeding for the deep red coat, leading to the establishment of the Red Golden Retriever as a distinct and cherished variant of the Golden Retriever. Today, the Red Golden Retriever is recognized and celebrated for its stunning appearance, exceptional skills, and loving temperament, making it a highly sought-after breed among dog enthusiasts around the world. The Great Golden Retriever Color Debate Despite the Red Golden Retriever's undeniable beauty and charm, there has been some controversy surrounding the breed's coat color. Some critics argue that the deep red coat falls outside the standard coat color range for Golden Retrievers, as defined by the breed's official standards. The American Kennel Club AKC and other prominent breed organizations recognize coat colors ranging from light golden to dark golden, but they do not explicitly mention the deep red hue found in the Red Golden Retriever. However, many enthusiasts and breeders have embraced the Red Golden Retriever for its unique appearance and the added diversity it brings to the breed. While the breed may not strictly adhere to the traditional coat color standards, it is important to remember that the Red Golden Retriever still possesses the essential qualities that make Golden Retrievers such beloved companions, including their friendly temperament, intelligence, and retrieving abilities. Grooming Essentials for a Red Golden The Red Golden Retriever, like other Golden Retrievers, requires regular grooming to maintain its beautiful coat and overall health. The breed's thick, double-layer coat is prone to shedding and can become tangled or matted if not properly cared for. To keep your Red Golden Retriever looking its best, follow these grooming guidelines: Brushing: Regular brushing is essential for the Red Golden Retriever. Aim to brush your dog's coat at least two or three times per week to remove loose hair, prevent matting, and distribute natural oils throughout the coat. During shedding seasons, daily brushing may be necessary. Bathing: Bathe your Red Golden Retriever every one to two months, or as needed, to keep its coat clean and healthy. Be sure to use a gentle dog shampoo formulated for sensitive skin to avoid irritating your dog's skin or damaging its coat. Nail trimming: Trim your dog's nails every three to four weeks to prevent overgrowth, which can lead to discomfort or difficulty walking. If your dog does not enjoy getting them clipped, you can always try a scratch board. Ear cleaning: Check your Red Golden Retriever's ears regularly for signs of dirt, debris, or infection. Gently clean the ears with a dog-safe ear cleaning solution and cotton balls or pads, taking care not to insert anything into the ear canal. Dental care: Regular dental care is crucial for maintaining your dog's overall health. Brush your Red Golden Retriever's teeth at least two or three times per week using a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush. Like the classic Golden Retriever, the Red Golden Retriever is known for its friendly, outgoing, and affectionate nature. These dogs are gentle with children, making them excellent family pets, and their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable. Red Golden Retrievers are also known for their adaptability. They can thrive in various living situations, from rural homes with spacious yards to urban apartments, as long as they receive sufficient exercise , mental stimulation, and human interaction. Their sociable demeanor makes them great companions for other pets and strangers alike, but it also means they may not excel as guard dogs. While they are generally a healthy breed, being aware of potential health problems can help you maintain your dog's overall well-being. Some common health concerns for Red Golden Retrievers include: Hip and elbow dysplasia: These are genetic conditions that affect the development of the hip and elbow joints, leading to arthritis and discomfort. Regular check-ups and maintaining a healthy weight can help manage these conditions. Eye issues: Red Golden Retrievers may be susceptible to various eye problems, such as cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy PRA , and glaucoma. Regular eye exams can help detect these issues early. Regular veterinary check-ups and monitoring for signs of heart trouble are crucial. Cancer: Golden Retrievers, including the Red Golden Retriever, have a higher risk of developing certain types of cancer, such as lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma. Regular vet visits and being vigilant for any unusual symptoms can aid in early detection and treatment. Skin allergies: These dogs may be prone to skin allergies and irritations. Regular grooming and bathing can help keep their skin healthy and reduce the risk of skin issues. Comparing Golden Retrievers and Red Golden Retrievers While Red Golden Retrievers share many characteristics with the classic Golden Retriever, there are some key differences between the two: Coat color: The most noticeable difference is the coat color. Red Golden Retrievers have a deep red hue, whereas the classic Golden Retriever's coat can range from light golden to dark golden. Breed recognition: The deep red coat of the Red Golden Retriever is not explicitly recognized by some breed organizations, such as the AKC, which may create challenges when participating in breed-specific events or competitions. Aside from these differences, Red Golden Retrievers and classic Golden Retrievers share similar temperaments, intelligence, and overall physical features. The Three Types of Golden Retrievers Golden Retrievers can be classified into three main types based on their physical characteristics and country of origin: American Golden Retriever: This type generally has a leaner build and a darker golden coat. They often have a more pronounced tuck-up in the abdomen and a more chiseled head shape compared to the other types. British or English Golden Retriever: The English Golden Retriever is stockier with a broader skull and a lighter coat color, often cream or pale gold. Their eyes are generally rounder and darker, and they have a more level topline. Canadian Golden Retriever: The Canadian Golden Retriever has a thinner, darker coat than the English type and a taller, more athletic build. It is important to note that the Red Golden Retriever does not fall into these three categories, as it is a color variation rather than a distinct type based on geographical origin or physical traits. Some other coat colors include: Light golden: This coat color is a pale shade of gold, often appearing almost cream or white in certain lighting conditions. Golden: The classic golden color is a medium shade of gold, which is often associated with the breed. Dark golden: A richer, deeper shade of gold, the dark golden coat can appear closer to a copper color but is still distinct from the deep red coat of the Red Golden Retriever. Cream: The cream-colored coat, commonly found in English Golden Retrievers, is a very light shade of gold that can sometimes appear almost white. This coat color is recognized and highly sought after in some countries, though it's important to note that the AKC does not accept the cream coat color for conformation show purposes in the United States. There can often be dogs that are labeled as Black Golden Retrievers but they are not what you expect. With its striking red coat and elegant appearance, this breed stands out and leaves a lasting impression on dog enthusiasts everywhere. Although there has been some debate regarding the deep red coat color in relation to breed standards, the Red Golden Retriever possesses all the essential qualities that make Golden Retrievers such beloved companions. Sharing the friendly, outgoing, and affectionate temperament of their classic counterparts, Red Golden Retrievers are well-suited to families, individuals, and first-time dog owners. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable, and they are adaptable to various living situations as long as they receive sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. While it is important to be aware of potential health issues and the grooming requirements associated with the breed, Red Golden Retrievers are generally healthy dogs that, with proper care and attention, can lead long, fulfilling lives. Intelligent and beautiful as the Irish Setter and loving and loyal as the Golden Retriever. Hybrid vigor, in a beautiful loving companion. Interestingly the cross is quite similar to early golden retrievers as seen in this painting. The Golden Retriever has been bred for lighter colors in recent years because this is favored by the AKC. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. I recommend looking at the images page to see some of the stunning photos we have collected over the years. We have been raising Golden Retriever Irish Setter Hybrids for more than 15 years and have insight that only comes through experience. Packer Pictured above as an adult and a puppy Packer is one of our favorite puppies from our first litter. He went to a family in Alaska who were kind enough keep in contact and send us pictures. Packer and his family came to visit us in on our new property. We have been on the Blue Mountains above Weston, Oregon going on 7 years. What is a Red Golden Retriever? While Red Golden Retrievers can grow as big as a normal golden retriever, they are often smaller than most normal golden retrievers. Red Golden Retrievers are very similar to Golden Retrievers in many ways. The main difference besides their coat color is their energy levels. Red Retrievers were bred to aid in hunting birds and are known to be more athletic than standard Goldens. They need to be exercised more often to get all of their energy out. We stand by our pups, which is why we work alongside licensed veterinarians to ensure that our puppies are healthy and always up to date on their deworming and vaccination protocols. We also offer a 2-year genetic health guarantee on all of our puppies. That way, you can rest easy knowing your puppy is healthy and free from genetic defects and congenital diseases. Our mission is dedicated to connecting healthy, beautiful puppies with their forever families. Because their temperament is friendly, energetic, and patient. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and devoted. Due to their higher energy levels they were bred to hunt after all , they do best with active families where they can get a lot of attention and are great with children. Luckily Red Retrievers and Goldens alike are known for their soft mouths since they were bred to hunt birds. The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! Are Red Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Red Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature even with their higher energy levels. They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Usually not, when compared to other subtypes of Golden Retrievers. While Red Golden Retrievers are much alike to Golden Retrievers with their high patience levels, they are known to have more energy. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene manifests relatively rarely compared to other colors. Serving Atlanta and the South East for 12 years! The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles In the mids, The Australian Guide Dog Association received an inquiry from a blind lady requesting a guide dog that would not cause her allergies to flare. To achieve a hypoallergenic dog they needed to breed their proven Labradors to a dog that was already non-shedding, hence the Standard Poodle. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition without ever having to go back to the parent breed of the Labrador or Poodle. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. We have also produced many therapy and service dogs in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Our puppies are birthed in our home and raised in our acre farm in the suburbs of Atlanta.
