Our Pug puppies and dogs are lovingly raised in our home by our family. We offer local pick up only. The pugs have plenty of room to run and play. We have an in-ground pool in which some of our pugs have learned to swim. We also have a small doggie pool for our pugs that don't like the big pool. Cardboard Box One of the least expensive whelping boxes is simply a cardboard box. Make sure it is big enough that your dog can stretch out in it. The nice thing about a cardboard box is that, once you no longer need the whelping box, you can simply throw it away. To make a whelping box out of cardboard, use these easy instructions: Find a box that your dog can comfortably lie down and stretch out in but not much larger than that. The sides should be at least to inches high. You want the sides to be too high for the puppies to climb over, but not so high your dog can't get over it when she wants a break. Smaller breed dogs will be fine with 12 inches, whereas larger breeds will need 24 inches. Cut a "door" into the side of the box for your dog to move in and out of the box. The width of the doorway should be about twice her body's width, and the edge should be high enough to keep puppies in but not so high she hits her belly on it. You will want to use some sort of covering on the cardboard to keep it from getting wet and to make cleaning it easy. You could line it with duct tape, plastic sheeting, tarps, or plastic drop cloths made for painting. Then cover whatever material you use with newspaper or old towels to make the flooring soft and comfortable. Plastic Storage Bin A plastic storage bin can also be used as a whelping box. You want to use the under-the-bed storage type so that the sides will be short enough for the mother dog to easily get in and out. If you decide to go this route, fold old towels on the bottom to ensure there is no chance that your dog will slip when she is moving around. Be aware that depending on the size of your pups, they may be able to get over the sides of the bin as they get bigger. In that case, you can extend the sides of the bin with cardboard. Ideas that will work for bigger dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers and Rottweiler dogs , include: Appliance Boxes If you have a mid-sized breed, you may still be able to find a cardboard box. Check with appliance stores and home improvement stores that carry items that would require bigger boxes. If you can't find one, you still have some inexpensive alternatives. The downside to using these boxes is once the puppies get large enough, they will be able to get over the sides, which they wouldn't with a traditional whelping box with sides at least inches high. Kiddie Pool A hard-sided plastic kiddie pool usually costs less than twenty dollars, and you can get them in several sizes. They are also easy to clean. These pools will last for several litters of puppies. However, just as with appliance boxes, the problem with the kiddie pool is that the sides may not be high enough to keep the puppies in as they get bigger. There are newer types of kiddie pools made just for dogs that have higher sides. Another option for larger dog breeds is to use a water trough , which has higher sides. They're much more expensive but very sturdy and can be reused for whelping, as well as an outdoor pool or bathing area for your dogs. To make a whelping box out of a kiddie pool, find a pool size where your dog can lay out comfortably with some extra room for the puppies. You can line it with a round whelping pad, old towels, newspaper, or even covers made specifically for kiddie pools used for whelping. An excellent safety precaution is adding a PVC pipe frame that serves as puppy rails to keep the mom from rolling over and crushing a newborn pup against the sides. Just be sure the puppies can't get stuck under or between the pipes. To keep puppies from getting out of the pool when they get larger, you can run x-pens or playpen panels around the outside of the pool. Make sure you leave a doorway for the mom to come and go! Whelping Box Plans If you want to build your own cheap whelping box but prefer a different style, you can find simple whelping box plans on the Internet. You'll also need a table saw, drill press, router, screwdriver, and drill with several bits. While the website includes detailed plans and instructions, if you're not accustomed to working with tools and lumber, you may want to hire a contractor to build this box for you. How to Build a Whelping Box with Puppy Rails The PetPlace website provides a very detailed set of step-by-step instructions on how to build a whelping box using plywood, wood strips, vinyl flooring, hinges, and corner braces. You'll also need to be handy in order to build this box, as tools required are a circular saw and drill. The floor is optional, and the instructions allow for removing it to create a bottomless box. The puppy rails are made from the wood strips, although you could also improvise and make a set of puppy rails using PVC pipes and connectors. Building a Whelping Box Another excellent set of plans for a whelping box built with plywood and hardware is found in this YouTube video. The box described in this video has the puppy rails built into the sides as well as two shelf areas in the back for supplies and can be placed on cheap vinyl flooring tiles for easy cleanup. The box was made for a labradoodle , but you can adjust the dimensions of the plans shown in the video for your own dog's size. Cheap Whelping Boxes for Sale If you're not mechanically inclined and balk at the idea of building anything with tools and lumber, you can purchase a box. There are plenty of options if you're on a strict budget. Check with local seller websites such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace to see if anyone is selling a box. You can also look on eBay. If you know of any breeders in your area, you could try contacting them to see if they might have a box they want to sell or possibly even rent out to you. It's made of plastic and comes with one whelping pad and PVC puppy rails. If you plan ahead, you can check out the websites of some major manufacturers of high-quality whelping boxes to see if they have sales. Easy to Improvise There are a number of less expensive, homemade whelping box ideas that will work for dogs of all sizes. You can improvise to create suitable whelping boxes that won't break your budget without too much trouble. Just spend some time looking at whelping boxes so you know how they are made and pick the most comfortable and safest style for you, your dog, and her pups. Petsmart Dishes: They should be bottom heavy so they can not be tipped on the side, or carried away. Yes, pups will carry them! So make sure they are heavy on the bottom, ceramic or stainless steel. Food: I am curently using is Taste of the Wild. I add sardines in water once or twice a week to account for additional dietary needs when feeding grain free. Water: Fresh water available at all times. If your city has problems with water please use bottled water to be on the safe side. Treats: I do not feed commercial treats. I prefer natural bits of raw carrots, bananas, apples, celery. The dogs love them and they are healthy and good for their teeth. Please do not use hooves or antlers. Veterinary dentist report that the most common cause of teeth breakage are hooves and antlers. They are just too hard for dogs. If a pup or dog breaks a tooth it might need specialized dental care like root canals and other expensive procedures, not to mention the repercussion on their health for life. Toys: Dogs chew on things…even toys. Do not buy small toys that can become a choking hazard or toys with small squeekies that the dog can pull out and choke! These things can cause intestinal obstructions that end up in life threats and expensive and serious surgeries. Make sure the toys are chew resistant and inspect them often to make sure that they pup is not pulling little bits off. Please do not buy rawhide. Pieces of rawhide can be pulled off and when wet become sticky and choke dogs. Bed: Soft beds with bumpers. The dogs like the lay their chins on the sides. Inspect the beds often to make sure your dog has not pulled out little bits of stuffing. Be specially careful with zippers. Brush: Yorkshire Terrier dogs are long hair dogs. They have to be groomed regularly to avoid matts. My preference is for pin brushes the kind that have NO plastic tips. Chris Cristensen original brush is ideal. If you brush regularly and maintain your dog with proper shampoo and conditioner you will have no problem with matts and will never need to have your dog shaved down to the skin nor use slicker brushes. A nice short puppy cut is easy to maintain between professional groomings. Please do not cut your dogs hair if you are not a trained groomer. Do not attempt to use clippers or scissors if you do not have experience with them. Have a professional do it. You will save time and money and your dog will always look tidy and clean. Comb: A metal comb sometimes known as Greyhound comb is ideal. Shampoo and Conditioner: I have used many shampoos and conditioners over the years. Time again and again I come back to the same. Its inexpensive, available every where and it does a great job. Cowboy Magic Shampoo and the Conditoner. It is very good. The dogs do well on it. I add sardines in water one or twice a week, sometimes I give them raw food. I add beef broth with no salt to the kibble. If you order from Chewy they will send it straight to your door. My mother was a huge fan of checklists when we were kids. All of the information in this article is based on our experiences. If your dog is having puppies then please consult a veterinarian for professional advice. This time last year I was running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to figure out what supplies I needed before Raven had her puppies. However, read on because you need more before whelping your first litter of pups. Lucky for us everything went flawlessly! The Essential Items Our must-have whelping kit items. Update 2: I contacted EZWhelp and they said this system might now work for a larger breed dog and that you might consider something a little sturdier for Golden Retrievers and larger. Update 3: We decided to go with the very expensive Magnabox Whelping Box and we are very satisfied. The Magnabox is very sturdy and easy to assemble. The main drawback is the price. If you plan on using your whelping box for many years I highly recommend the Magnabox. We liked it so much we bought a second one recently to make the cleaning process easier. Heat Lamp — Newborn puppies cannot regulate their body temperature. Last year Raven stayed with her pups and they cuddled up to her for warmth, but we also got a heat lamp to help keep our pups warm. We like the heat lamps with the clamp and attach our lamps to the edge of our whelping box. Puppy Baby Scale — You want to make sure your puppies are gaining weight. We weigh our puppies every day starting from day 1. As mentioned earlier, puppies cannot control their body temperature and we want to make sure our puppy room is not too hot nor too cold. Help The Whelp Our vet and breeding friends advised that we the humans help in a few areas when whelping a litter of puppies. Head Lamp — One of the things we did not use as we had ample light since we whelped our first puppy in the late morning around 10am and finished in the early afternoon around 2pm. However, a headlamp will allow you both your hands to be free while shining a nice light in all the little nooks and crannies. Hemostat — Use to clamp the umbilical cord. Medical Scissors — Use to cut the umbilical cord. Unwaxed Dental Floss — Use to tie off the umbilical cord. Tail Wrap — for dogs tails to protect from draining fluids. Vaseline — for taking a rectal temperature and in case one of the puppies gets stuck. Keeping Things Clean What supplies will you need before whelping a litter of puppies? Overall our whelping area got pretty messy, but having these items will help to keep your pup, mama, and the whelping box a little bit tidier. Alcohol Prep Pads — On the theme of keeping clean, use these to clean off the hemostat and scissors after each use. Iodine Prep Pads — Use on the cut umbilical cords to keep the area as clean as possible. Receiving Cloths — Use to grip and dry each puppy. Pee Pads — We used the large pee pads to put under mom to catch afterbirth to try and keep our whelping area as clean as possible during the whelping. Paper Towels — To keep your whelping box area as clean as possible. Hand Sanitizer — Try to keep yourself as sanitary as possible. We used hand sanitizer not only during the whelping, but the entire 8 weeks we had the litter at our house. Exam Gloves — We used a different pair of gloves with each puppy again to try and keep things as clean as possible. When each pup was born we shaved an area to identify each puppy. For example, left shoulder, right shoulder, left hip, right hip, etc. We have an inexpensive battery powered beard trimmer similar to this one Puppy Collars — Not your regular nylon buckle puppy collars. Shave mark, color collar, distinguishing features, time of birth, etc. Puppy Weight Chart — We track our puppies weights daily to make sure their gaining each day. Having a handy chart next to your puppy scale or whelping box makes it easy to do this on a daily basis. She could end up with an upset stomach and diarrhea. For the record Raven ate 3 last time without issue. She can sometimes chew it down too far which can cause issues. Instead crimp the umbilical with the hemostat and make the cut with your scissors then tie off the cords with your unwaxed dental floss. Use your aspiration bulb to clean out the airways — mouth, nose, and throat. If mama is pushing for more than a half hour without anything happening then contact your veterinarian. Dogs are perfectly capable of handling the entire whelping process on their own. This was proven when I woke up early morning and Raven already whelped puppies on her own. We rushed her and her newborns to the whelping box where the rest of her puppies were delivered. Number 2: Be prepared with all of your whelping supplies well in advance. Puppies can come early! Make sure you have all you need weeks before the due date. So, to ease the anxiety, be prepared by making sure you have everything you need on your whelping checklist.
