Likewise, if your dog has a wheat allergy, he should not eat noodles. One other thing to watch for is that dried noodles often contain a high amount of salt sodium , so you will need to check this first. Japenese ramen noodles are loaded with sodium or flavored with soy sauce, and you should not feed these to your dog. Oatmeal German Shepherds can eat oatmeal. People once believed this staple food to be fattening and starchy; however, pasta is now considered nutritious, providing lots of energy. Peanuts German Shepherds can eat one or two plain unsalted peanuts as they are rich in healthy unsaturated fats and fiber and many vitamins and minerals. However, you must not forget about their high-fat content, which can cause your dog to have a stomach upset as fat is harder to digest. Technically speaking, peanuts are legumes, similar to peas and lentils, as they grow in pods that mature beneath the ground. However, for nutritional and culinary purposes, peanuts are considered nuts! Peanuts are also high in calories, and you must also consider the general risks of choking. Peanut Butter German Shepherds can eat peanut butter as it is a nutritionally well-rounded treat containing protein, healthy fats, and fiber. It also has various minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E and B vitamins, and is a good source of folic acid. Ensure the brand you buy is organic, with nothing added. Some brands contain xylitol sweetener , and you must avoid these as xylitol is toxic to dogs, so ensure you carefully check the label. As peanut butter is a high-value treat, it is ideal during training sessions. However, it is high in calories and fat, so feed sparingly. Peas Peas are good for boosting energy levels as they are starchy carbohydrates. They are good for the eyes, heart, and skin and contain vitamins such as vitamin A, K, and B. Peas also contain iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. I think peas are an excellent human food that you can easily add to your GSDs bowl at mealtimes. Fresh or frozen peas are okay. However, avoid the canned variety due to their high salt content. Pineapple German Shepherds can eat pineapple. Frozen pineapple chunks make an excellent treat in warm weather and help keep your GSD hydrated, but do not feed canned pineapple due to its high sugar content. This fruit is also ideal if your dog needs a quick energy boost during periods of intense activity. You should remove all fat as too much fat can lead to an upset stomach and inflammation of the pancreas. Pork bones are also a choking risk. Processed pork meats such as bacon, ham, and sausage, should also not be given to your dog due to their high salt content. Potato Cooked German Shepherds can eat potatoes. This starchy vegetable is packed with nutrients and contains many vitamins, minerals, and fiber, including vitamin C, B6, and potassium, to fight disease and aid digestion. They provide lots of energy as a high carbohydrate food, so feed sparingly. When giving potatoes to your dog, you should remove the skin and cook them. Also, you must not provide raw potato or if the potato is green on the outside as it contains solanine which is a toxic compound; however, the cooking process removes this danger. As sweet potatoes are a starchy carbohydrate, they are probably best avoided if your dog is overweight, less active, or diabetic. Sweet potatoes should be cooked and the skin removed before feeding to your German Shepherd. You can bake, mash, or puree them. Due to their nutritional value, they are a popular source of carbohydrates in high-quality dog foods. Tuna also contains many healthy vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, B12, B6, iron, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. There is often mixed opinion as to whether dogs should eat tuna due to its higher levels of mercury compared to other fish; however, as with most human foods you give to your German Shepherd, moderation is key. Longer living fish species such as mackerel and tuna may contain high amounts of mercury, so feed sparingly — if you opt for these types. Seeds or pits must be removed from fruit such as nectarines, peaches, and plums as they contain toxic cyanide traces. The pits are also a choking hazard. Most vegetables should be cooked as most dogs will find them easier to digest. However, some can be given raw such as carrots and green beans. Foods Toxic to German Shepherds Poisoning episodes in dogs are usually due to a lack of knowledge by the owner. Some of the poisonings could result in severe illness or even the death of your dog. This is optional, but I think a perfect Mod Podge formula for this is the Sparkle. It will be the perfect bling for the holiday! Cut the pug head out of the foam based on the colors in the pattern. Place the foam pieces on a piece of thicker paper, foam, or even a cereal box. Glue or hot glue the pieces down. Add the wiggly eyes with hot glue as well — plus the nose and tongue. Once your pug face is complete, cut out the head and glue it to the front of the box, right below the clasp leaving the top unglued. The clasp should be able to operate behind the head. Cut out one large hot for the top of the box — and several smaller hearts of various sizes to add to the rest of the box. Then glue the rest of the hearts on the box — and add little accents to the hearts with the Sharpie. Let dry before using. Kids can place the box on their desk and let the Valentines fill it up! Lay your doggie on it's side and start hot gluing your moppies on the box. It doesn't matter which side you start on. You'll be doing all sides on the body the square box first. You do not have to run the glue the entire length of the string. Once you have laid the first layer down on that side, it will look like this. You will have the mop strings hanging over the box. Simply trim them off. Save the strings, you'll be able to use them! Then it will look like this! Yay, it's starting to look like something now. Continue doing this for each side of the body box. Put a second layer on all the sides you just finished. This is where your shaggy effect will come in. The first layer serves as a base, but the second layer is what's really going to make your doggie look like a doggie. Put a tail on your doggie. Lay a pile of moppies on the table and use another moppie to tie it in half. Then glue it together. Simply hot glue where the middles will meet. Then glue it to the box where you want the tail to be. Now start your first layer on the top of the body box the doggie's back. Again, you will be gluing both the top and the bottom of the string. You want this layer to be secure and serve as a base coat. Do NOT trim all of the strings! The hang over moppies will serve as your second layer on the back of the box, which is your doggie's butt : You will only be trimming around the Valentine slot. Glue the moppies right up to the round box the doggie's head. Now it's time to glue your first layer around the sides of your round box. Again, glue the top and bottom of the string, where it will lay on the round box. Use LONG moppies for this step. The hang over moppies are going to finish off your shaggy dog look! When you're done, it will look like this. Now it's time to give the doggie a chin. You need to glue the hanging moppies to the underside of the round box. Flip the doggie upside down. This isn't going to look pretty. Your job is to just get those suckers glued under there. So just start gluing the moppies. You're gonna have moppies on top of moppies and tangled everywhere. Now it's really starting to look like a doggie!! Glue moppies to the top of your doggie's head. This is the only first layer that you will in fact be running a glue line for the entire length of the string. So DON'T cut them! Time to make the doggie's ears! Lay a pile of moppies down on the table and cut the pile in half. Then take a mop string and tie it tight with a double knot at the top of the pile. You want it to be nice and level because you will be gluing that end to the top of the head. Smear hot glue all over the end that you just trimmed and place it on top of the head where you want the ears. AW, now we have ears! Time to put the second layer on top of the head. Okay, this is different than anything you've done so far. It should be fairly random. You want it to look like a shaggy dog so there really is no way to mess this up. His hair is supposed to look messy and curly. You just want to place 2 or 3 beads down so that the hair looks three dimensional and realistic. Continue until you're done with the whole top of the head. Add ribbons on your doggie's ears. Just tie a simple bow and adjust until you have it looking the way you want it. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. Once the hair gets longer, it is important to make sure you are reaching all the way to the base of the hair. If not, loose hair is not removed below the surface and matts will begin to form. If that hair builds up, it is not going to be possible to clip the hair at a decent length and the only alternative will be to shave the hair close to the skin. In order to keep a coat longer than and inch or so, you will want to use a technique called line brushing. Line Brushing It is simply done by parting the coat with your free hand and brushing the loose hair on the other side of the part, starting at the base of the hair. With every other stroke or so, you can bring down a small bit of the hair being held up by your hand. You will slowly move your hand up that section of coat. Start low on a section of the body and work your way up. Using the edge of the pin brush, start brushing from the part, down the length of the hair. Complete the stroke to the end of the hair. Repeat till smooth and ready to continue. Pick up a small amount of hair from the other side of the part to continue the process, working your way up that section of the body.
