Those at the 8 week mark will sleep up to .Growth is going to be rapid. It will last several months. Females will have their first heat if not spayed. Males will have viable sperm. Though technically a female can become pregnant at this young age, breeding is recommended at the age of 1 year old or older. Males should be at least 9 months old. Some Pug puppies will stop growing by the age of 9 months. For others, just a few pounds will be gained from now until the 12 month mark. By the time, full height is usually reached. The adult Pug will fill out in width, most noticeable in the chest area. The dog is muscular and will not grow any larger. Extra weight gain at this point may be deemed unhealthy. Your dog may show a bit of difficulty when rising from a down position. He or she may walk slower up a staircase. A quality canine mattress is recommended for any age, however during the senior years an orthopedic canine bed is more important than ever. Expect an older Pug dog to take more naps and retreat more often due to a lower tolerance for noise levels. When your dog reaches the age of 8 or 9, it will be time to give a bit more attention to certain grooming techniques. Skin looses its elasticity and cleaning wrinkles will be more important than ever. An older Pug will be more susceptible to infections. Take extra time to clean the folds and keep them dry. Your Pug's veterinarian should be performing more thorough tests, especially for sugar levels. Eye exams are very important, as well. Just as with humans, an older Pug may be more susceptible to developing diabetes, arthritis , have problems with joints and their bones may be more brittle. The pounds that they have been carrying around and the body structure that they have short legs especially have been taking its toll. At this age, excess weight be a problem. It is recommended to make a gradual change in the diet, to ensure that meals have a higher count of nutrients specifically for aging pets. If you previously gave no-so-healthy snacks, make an effort to change over to a solid, healthy meal and snack plan. Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! Bernedoodle Puppy Development Stages Birth — 2 Weeks Regardless of Bernedoodle breed size, the puppy development stages are very similar. Newborn Bernedoodle puppies have not developed all senses. They can taste and touch but cannot see or hear. During these initial few weeks, you can expect the pups to be reliant on their mother for milk and warmth, with them reluctant to leave her side. Mothers play a critical role in these first few weeks. They regulate the body temperature and help support the potty needs of puppies at this stage. The pup becomes more independent and curious about the world around them. Bernedoodle pups will start to crawl and wag its tail. By 12 weeks, they will easily stand up and confidently stroll. During this phase, Bernedoodle puppies also develop all their senses so can start to be trained. Simply obedience and social skills training can start to happen to ensure that good habits are learnt early. By 12 weeks, the pup will start to teethe and at that point can start weaning. In this stage you can start to train them with more complex commands to make them into the loving and affectionate pets you crave. Bernedoodles can be potty trained during this phase as they continue learning key life skills to carry them through into adulthood. You can also expect the baby teeth to get replaced with adult teeth and the development of the adult coat. By the end of adolescence, your Bernedoodle will start to resemble the size of an adult and have developed full sexual maturity. However, they are not likely to have developed full mental maturity by this stage. During early adolescence, you should consider getting your pup spayed or neutered as this can prevent unwanted pregnancy and also calm your puppy down as they experience adolescent hormonal change. This is something to consider when looking to adopt a Bernedoodle. Also note, that males and females will likely differ in sizes, with males on the larger end and females on the lower end of estimates. Measuring the height of your Bernedoodle is an easy task. Simply grab a tape measure and place your pup straight on a flat surface, then measure from their withers to the ground to get an accurate height measurement. The withers are located between the shoulder blades. Spaying and neutering are common, low-risk procedures, however, you should be careful as to when they are carried out. Neutering removes the testicles from a male dog while spaying removes the ovaries from a female dog. These common procedures prevent your pup from impregnating other dogs or getting pregnant themselves, while also protecting against testicular and ovarian cancer. The procedure reduces aggressive tendencies during adolescence. The procedure is recommended to take place once the physical growth of your Bernedoodle has stopped, so this may be a period between 12 to 18 months. Use the Bernedoodle size chart to help guide you. Goldendoodle vs Bernedoodle Size Goldendoodle and Bernedoodle are both cross breeds which have multiple sizes. The Standard Bernedoodle is larger than the Goldendoodle, with the Standard ranging up to a maximum of 90 pounds, while the maximum weight of a Standard Goldendoodle is 65 pounds. The Medium and Mini breeds of both breeds have similar weight and height ranges, with specific sizes dependent on the breed generation of the parents. In terms of temperament, both Bernedoodle and Goldendoodle are friendly and sociable dogs. Bernedoodles can be calmer, while Goldendoodles are typically friendlier. Both make great loyal companions. Factors That Affect Bernedoodle Growth The section below highlights some known factors affecting the growth trajectory of Bernedoodles. Where possible, find out if there are any hereditary health issues from the breeder so you can be prepared. Gender plays a role too, with male Bernedoodles being larger than females across each breed size. Nutrition While genetics set the overall parameters for growth, nutrition will affect where your pup sits within the estimates. A healthy balanced diet containing a good range of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals is essential for supporting strong growth. The dog owner controls the nutritional intake of the pup, therefore, you play a critical role. You should take time to research specific foods and reputable food brands. Also, monitor closely each time your pup tries new foods to look out for adverse reactions. Bernedoodles are not particularly energetic so need between 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. This will allow them to burn calories but also ensure they are kept happy and stimulated. Exercises may include running, jumping, or climbing. An additional hour of low-intensity exercise such as walking is also recommended. Be careful when exercising during adolescence as their muscles can be strained. The first step to determining the amount to feed your Bernedoodle is finding out approximately what your puppy will weigh when they are adults. Increase the food intake as the pup grows. Young puppies are usually offered 3 meals between 2 two and 6 months of age. After 6 months, offer your puppies two meals per day. The amount of food your puppy needs to maintain their good body condition varies depending on the metabolism rate of each puppy and its activity level. A healthy Bernedoodle will eat cups of food daily. Four months puppy east more than 8 weeks old puppy. Spotting signs of being significantly underweight or overweight is an important role that a dog owner plays. Often, this can be a sign of a serious medical issue or a sign of insufficient care. It is therefore critical that you know how to spot this. As weight gain or loss can be gradual, it may escape the eye of dog owners as to whether your dog is underweight or overweight. There are simple checks all owners can do; these are outlined below. If you cannot feel the ribs because of the fat, then they have excess weight. However, if you can feel the ribs easily, your Bernedoodle is underweight. Feel the spine — the same test of the ribs can be applied to the spine. You should run your hands gently and be able to feel the spinal cord, but the bones should not be protruding. A spine that is pronounced with no or little flesh means your puppy is underweight, but if there is a lot of fat on the spine, your Bernedoodle has extra weight. You are lucky if you own a Bernedoodle because mixed breed generally tends to have fewer health-related issues that can affect their growth. However, there are still chances that your Bernedoodle will develop conditions such as elbow dysplasia, allergies, eye issues, hip dysplasia, and skin eyes. The good thing about these diseases is that they should not affect the lifespan of your Bernedoodle or their growth, hence you should not worry so much. You always seek advice from your vet to ensure that your dog is not safe. Do Bernedoodles Experience Growing Pain? Panosteitis is commonly referred to as Growing pain and is an inflammation of the leg bones which ultimately leads to lameness. It shifts from one location to another and can phase from worsening to improving within a few days to a few weeks. Growing pains usually occur during growth and affect Bernedoodle puppies up to 2 years of age. It is caused by pressure that is created by the growth rate within the bones. Growing pains are a no concern and do not affect the later health life of your Bernedoodle but it is a painful condition and can interrupt the growing experiences of the puppy. Seek vet advice to rule out any possible illnesses such as bone diseases and get insight into how to manage Growing pain in your puppy. It is of great concern to know if your Bernedoodle puppy is the right weight when compared with the growth chart. However, it is normal to have your puppy not perfectly fitting in a growth chart. Not all dogs will fit in the spectrum of the growth chart. They are made up of averages especially for mixed breeds because they can have a lot of variety. It might be time to cut back some food if you find that his tummy is sagging but if you can see the ribs then it is time to increase his food. Consult the vet if there is no reason why your dog is not on the growth chart so that you can rule out any possible illnesses. Some dogs are picky eaters and hence might not like some food. Your dog is overweight because they consume more calories than they burn. Therefore, to achieve good results your dog should be able to eat less and exercise more. Most dogs can achieve a predictable weight loss when they are fed with a constant amount daily but other may require even fewer calories depending on their age and activity level. For weight control, you should be aware of how many calories are in a cup of food. Do not free-feed an overweight dog because it is unnatural and can contribute to unnatural hormonal changes that can make weight loss more challenging. Feed your dog two to four small portions of food daily with the total number of calories and treats being equal to the number of calories desired to lose weight. Weigh yourself first if your dog is light enough to lift. The reason you should weigh yourself first is that small and medium-sized dogs may not weigh much to offset the scale and provide a reliable measurement. Then stand on the scale again while you are holding your dog that is climbing on the scale again with your dog. Ensure that you keep your dog calm and still because too many movements could delay the reading or throw you off the scale. Subtract the reading when not holding the dog from the one when holding your dog. The veterinarian usually recommends weighing your dog every 6 months to ensure they are within the healthy range and to monitor any potential illness. Bloat usually happens when the stomach gets swollen with gas or food. GDV can be prevented by the pet parents undergoing a surgical procedure known as Prophylactic Incisional Gastropexy. Orthopedic injuries— Bernedoodles at any age may suffer from orthopedic issues such as elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament ruptures, and hip dysplasia. We know that the growth rate of your Doodle will depend on the type of Bernedoodle you have, but most newborns will weigh approximately one pound when they are born, and will probably weigh about two pounds by the end of the first week of age. Your only job as a dog owner is to make sure that Momma is feeding all of her puppies. Sometimes, it can happen that a mother rejects one of her puppies. In that unfortunate scenario, you have to think about a puppy milk formula and feeding it on a schedule. By the end of this time period, your Bernedoodle puppy should weigh approximately 35 pounds. In addition to that, it should not have to rely on its mother at this point in terms of nourishment, and should begin eating puppy food. You have to make sure you are feeding your pup regularly so that it can grow into a healthy Bernedoodle dog. Puppies at this age burn a lot of calories by getting into puppy mischief, so you have to make sure that it is getting all the nourishment it needs in order to grow. This truly is a large dog breed! By the end of the ninth-month mark, your dog will weigh approximately sixty pounds, and it will still keep on growing sometimes even until it is two years of age! Even though the growth rate will have slowed down, you still need to make sure you are feeding your dog well in order to ensure it is getting the proper nutrition for healthy development. However, when it comes to weight, you can expect your pup to have gained quite a bit. Your puppy should already be around sixty-five to seventy pounds by the end of this time period. Ah, adulthood! Now, you can rest from all that puppy mayhem even though it was rather cute. When your pup reaches adulthood, it should stop developing. However, you might notice that Bernedoodles take their sweet time reaching adulthood when compared to other dog breeds. Imagine — a puppy for two years! This is the time mark when they will have attained their adult weight and height. How Big Do Bernedoodles Get? Factors That Affect Growth There are four factors that affect how quickly or slowly your Bernedoodle will grow: type of Bernedoodle, generation of Bernedoodle, nutrition, and physical health. We will discuss all of these factors in detail below! Genetics: Type Of Bernedoodle. If you can recall, there are three different kinds of Bernedoodles, and the type of Bernedoodle you have is the largest indication of how large your puppy will become. The issue with the type of Bernedoodle is that they can be mixed with your Standard Poodle, a Toy Poodle, or even an Aussiedoodle — all of which have different sizes that determine the growth of their offspring. Mini Bernedoodle Toy Bernedoodle Minis are the cutest among the Bernedoodle family, being the smallest of the three types and having been a crossbreed between a Miniature Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. At eight weeks of age, you will find that your Mini Bernedoodle puppy will weigh around ten pounds, which is not radically different from the other Doodle types, but you will notice a drastic difference after the first eight weeks. It will reach its full size at around forty-four weeks of age, even though its weight might fluctuate, but not dramatically. If you measure this small dog, you will find that its adult height is around twelve to seventeen inches, and its weight is about twenty-four pounds, if fed appropriately. Of course, one is always faced with the unfortunate reality of obese dogs. Medium Bernedoodle Medium Bernedoodles are larger dogs when compared to the adorable Minis, and their maximum height lies somewhere between eighteen and twenty-two inches when they reach adulthood. You can measure this height from the shoulders to the feet. Their maximum healthy weight will be around twenty-four and forty-nine pounds. If you pay attention to the Bernedoodle growth chart, you will notice that Mediums will weigh approximately eighteen pounds at eight weeks of age, and bounce up to thirty-six pounds by week twenty! A whopping difference! Your Medium will achieve its adult size at about a year of age, which means that they attain their final size when it comes to weight and height sooner than the Standard Bernedoodle. However, you should not be worried if your Medium does not hit these weights and heights because there is considerable variation in this breed. As long as your dog is following its natural growth curve, it should be fine. Standard Bernedoodle The Standard Bernedoodle is the largest of the types of Bernedoodle out there, and they grow until they are two years old. A Standard can weigh up to twenty-four pounds by the time it is eight weeks old, and it will grow very rapidly, attaining forty-six pounds by the twentieth week of age. The maximum height of your Standard is approximately between twenty-three and twenty-nine inches when measured from the shoulder to the feet. Remember, since this is a mixed dog breed, it can be difficult to tell how large each type should be. Genetics: Generation Of Bernedoodle. There are three types of Bernedoodles when we are talking about Bernedoodle generations that affect dog size: the F1B Bernedoodle, the F1 Bernedoodle, and the Australian Bernedoodle. The generation of Bernedoodle is important because it determines the percentage of dog breed that is in your mixed Bernedoodle breed, and this can heavily affect how large your dog will become. F1 Bernedoodles The first type we will go over is the F1 Bernedoodle, which is a breed of Bernedoodle that is fifty percent Poodle and fifty percent Bernese Mountain Dog. This is usually what people think about when they hear about the Bernedoodle. An F1 Doodle will reach its full height at twelve to fourteen months of age. However, it takes them much longer to reach their adult weight, which will be at approximately two and a half years of age. This means that it takes them much more time to develop when compared to other dogs. Seventy-five percent of its genes will be Poodle, whereas only twenty-five percent will be Bernese Mountain Dog. F1B Bernedoodles reach their full height when they are a year old, and attain their final weight between the eighteenth- and twentieth-month mark. Australian Bernedoodle This is probably the most exotic of the Bernedoodle generation types since it is a mix of Poodle, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Aussiedoodle, making it much more difficult to tell what your dog will end up weighing by adulthood, considering this mix. However, we can give some approximates. Usually, the Australian Bernedoodle will have reached its maximum height by the time it is a year old, and its final weight by the time it is two. Even though nutrition will most likely not affect how quickly your dog will grow, or affect your dog attaining a height or weight that is not set in its genetic code, it can affect your dog negatively if you serve your dog a poor diet. Chances are he will suffer from a joint dysfunction and other diseases later on in his life. You also should talk to a vet about possible supplementation, and whether your dog needs it at all in order to grow at a better rate. We would not recommend giving your dog any additional supplements without consulting a vet first. Physical Health. Physical health is very important when it comes to how healthy your Bernedoodle will be. After they run themselves down, they will require lots of rest in order to recover from all of that exercise achieved through play. However, as your Bernedoodle grows, you will realize that it will require more than its puppy drive to keep it healthy. Walks and goal-oriented games are a great way to ensure that your puppy is developing in a healthy manner. You might be wondering if the Bernedoodle growth chart we have prepared indirectly indicates that your dog is suffering in some way unknown to you. Growth charts generally are created based on averages in dog populations, and not every single dog will be the average fit. Your dog might be a healthy outlier! Another reason why your dog might not fit the Bernedoodle growth chart we have created is because Bernedoodles are a mixed breed, which means that there is a lot of variety in their genetic makeup. However, there is a slight chance that Bernedoodles might still develop conditions such as hip dysplasia , elbow dysplasia , allergies, eyes issues, or skin eyes. At the end of the day, you can always ask your doctor for more advice. You might be wondering if the lifespan set in the genetics of your Bernedoodle affects how it will grow. You still might be wondering how long your Bernedoodle will live, especially if your pup has already reached adulthood. In that case, you should know that smaller Bernedoodles tend to have a longer lifespan when compared to their larger family members. You can expect an F1 Bernedoodle to live for about twelve years, whereas a Mini might live up to eighteen years of age. Just make sure that you take care of your pup throughout its life by feeding it a good diet, taking it to the vet, and maintaining a good exercise routine. Since then, other breeders have followed suit, producing more dogs that families can enjoy. Bernedoodle Characteristics Why would breeders want to combine these two dogs? They wanted the positive characteristics of the Bernese Mountain Dog without the heavy shedding, short lifespan, and propensity for cancer. By crossing the Bernese with Poodles, they were able to create the perfect companion dog while eliminating some of these issues. Bernedoodle Size Breeders may mix the Bernese with a standard, medium, or mini Poodle to create different sizes of the hybrid breed. No matter the size, these dogs are typically very gentle around the elderly and children and make great therapy and service dogs. They are easy to train and love being part of the family. Is Bernedoodle An Official Breed? Like all puppies, Bernedoodles experience their most rapid growth between birth and two weeks of age. Birth to 2 Weeks A newborn will weigh around one pound, and you can expect that to double within the first week or so. At three months, your puppy is likely to have reached about 30 percent of her total growth. He is likely to still have a voracious appetite and will be very playful and active. This is when obedience training becomes very important, as you want to teach your puppy some standard commands sit, down, stay and help him to understand his boundaries before he gets too big to handle. Keep in mind that the type of Bernedoodle you have will affect these growth stages. Smaller ones will grow more quickly and may attain their adult size by six to eight months. Larger ones will take longer. She may start to act more mature at this age too, though larger Bernedoodles may retain their puppy attitudes until they reach two years of age. Standard Bernedoodles will need large-breed puppy food, while mini ones will do better with small-breed varieties. These are specifically formulated to help optimize growth. Choose the highest quality food you can that is free of fillers, chemicals, and unnecessary ingredients. Look for those with a quality protein source listed first—real meat is best, including chicken, beef, pork, fish, and lamb. Then feed your puppy three to four times a day until he reaches one year old. This helps avoid bloat, which can turn dangerous in some instances. Smaller, more frequent meals are better for your Bernedoodle. As your dog grows, keep an eye on his weight. Overweight and obesity in puppies can lead to health problems later in life. Instead, establish a regular feeding schedule early on. Feed your pup at the same time each day, three times a day. When he reaches one year old, switch to quality adult food. If you can see the hip or rib bones, your dog may be underweight. Gradually increase his food amount until his body shape matches that of a healthy dog. Increase his exercise and reduce the food amount only slightly until his shape returns. Be careful feeding your Bernedoodle treats. Stick to your feeding schedule, avoid feeding your dog human scraps, and when you do treat, use healthy products specifically made for dogs. How big your Bernedoodle will get depends heavily on his parents and the size of the Poodles in his background. If you purchased him from a breeder, gather all the information you can on his parents and grandparents, as that will help you estimate his final size. As with many other animals, males are typically larger than females, though the difference in Bernedoodles may be only about 10 percent. There are a couple of formulas you can use to estimate the fully grown size of your puppy. Both are based on age. At about 15 weeks, your Bernedoodle will be about 50 percent of his total body weight. At that point, you can just double it to get an estimate of his final weight. You can check smaller varieties sooner, between 12 and 15 weeks. Another option is to use a DNA test. When Do Bernedoodles Stop Growing? When you can expect your Bernedoodle to stop growing depends on its size. Standard Bernedoodles will be close to their adult size at one year but may continue to grow until they reach two years or later. Smaller sizes will reach their adult height sooner—around 9 months of age.

Some dogs are bred to adapt to parents' tastes who are searching for specificity in shape, appearance, temperament, and pure bloodlines with minimal hereditary health concerns. This is a strong, compact dog that makes an excellent great mate. These dogs are also known commonly as Boston Bulldogs. These fierce little canines were originally pit fighters, and they hail from Boston, Massachusetts. Additionally, these dogs are one of the rare canine breeds that originated in the United States. History Because there isn't much history behind hybrid or designer dogs, it might be difficult to get a solid feel for them. Breeding particular dogs, such as this one, have been more frequent in the last two decades. Experts believe that this hybrid breed has contributed to the influx of dogs into shelters due to unintentional breeding. Let us discuss in more detail about the history of both parents that result in the English Boston Bulldog. With the passage of type, Robert extensively crosses Judge with some other Bull and Terrier breeds to produce the modern-day Boston Terrier today's Boston Terrier. Keep reading: Boston Terrier vs. French Bulldog — Which One to Choose? History of the English Bulldog 2nd Parent The Bulldog is a dog breed distinguished by its distinctively broad head and stout shoulders. Bulldogs have thick skin folds on their brows, big, dark, wide-set eyes, a narrow muzzle with unique folds hanging skin especially under the neck , drooping lips, and sharp teeth. The present-day Bulldog is a very different dog from the Bulldog of his forefathers. There is considerable disagreement over where it originated, but the majority of experts think that it is descended from ancient mastiff-type canines and that it was mostly created in England. The earliest recorded mention of the breed was in the 16th century when they were used in a particularly vicious "sport" known as bull-baiting, which entailed the dog grasping onto the bull's nose and shaking it violently with its teeth. Personality And Temperament The temperaments and attitudes of the English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix are a fusion of the greatest characteristics of each of the parental breeds that generated them. Because these dogs are no longer employed for combative sports, their personalities have mellowed, and they have become more approachable. The Boston Bulldogs are well-known for their fierce loyalty to their families. They are affectionate and caring, and they make wonderful family companions in addition to being loyal and obedient. On the other hand, these dogs are sensitive and might become depressed if they are separated from their family. If you are thinking about adopting this breed, make sure you have enough free time to spend with them. The English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix is also recognized for having a lighthearted and lively nature, making them excellent with youngsters. English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix pups are quite energetic while they are young, but they mature into peaceful adult dogs. Whatever their activity, English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix pups are content as much as they are with their dearest people. This includes taking a short walk with their owner and cuddling on the couch. As discussed above, these dogs are a hybrid cross between Boston Terriers and English Bulldogs, combining all of their greatest features into one bundle of fun. These canines range in size from small to medium-sized dogs pounds , and they are rather inactive. Boston Bulldogs consume around one cup of kibble each day on average. When selecting food for your Boston Bulldog, it's crucial to remember that it should be simple to digest for him. Boston Bulldogs, like their parents, have a lot of flatulence regularly. Finding foods that are high in fiber will aid in the development of a healthy digestive tract as well as the reduction of flatulence. However, they require little attention, and their fur is simple to maintain. As a result, it is critical that they maintain clean, free of dirt bodies. Their ears are similarly bent, and dirt can gather in them, creating a warm and humid atmosphere that can lead to ear infections. Therefore, it is essential to keep their ears nice and clean, and you must inspect them regularly. Furthermore, bathing these dogs regularly is not recommended. Because they have delicate skin, English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix dogs should only bathe when absolutely required, and they should use hypoallergenic shampoo to prevent irritation. A soft, moist cloth or towel is a nice alternative while cleaning, and it may also be used to wipe the folds and ears afterward, as long as they are allowed to dry completely. Generally speaking, English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix like being groomed, especially if they have a regular grooming schedule. Health The Boston Bulldogs have a life span of 13 to 16 years, and they are considered somewhat healthy dogs. The Boston Bulldog, in contrast to his Bulldog cousins, does not have respiratory problems and is in better condition than both of his parental breeds. However, they may suffer from these health issues: This crossbred is extremely vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, and in hot climes, it is prone to heatstroke. Flatulence is also a common occurrence in these dogs, which, although not a serious health risk, can be an inconvenience. These dogs also suffer from some eye issues, including cataracts which obscure the eye's lens and lead to impaired vision and glaucoma which is an eye disorder caused by unusually high intraocular eye pressure and damage to the optic nerve. Additionally, this hybrid dog can also suffer from congestive heart failure, in which mitral valve insufficiency results in the heart's inability to pump blood efficiently, and it is a health concern that can be passed down from one Boston Terrier generation to the next. Many English Bulldog Boston Terrier Mix owners will tell you that their dogs bark while they're having fun with their parents, other dogs, or other animals. This means they tend to bark in a "cheerful manner" rather than the more hostile and violent warning barks that are more common in bulldogs. These dogs are somewhat healthier than their parents because they do not suffer from respiratory health issues. Furthermore, these dogs are fun-loving and calm companions rather than aggressive as their parents. Similar Post:. Those who share this version of the story consider the Olde Boston Bulldogge as the original Boston Bulldog, a dog resulting from the cross between Bulldogs and Terriers in the s and bred for pest control, guarding, but also for companionship. The most accepted version of the facts considers the Boston Bulldog as a crossbreed, a hybrid dog that is half Boston Terrier, half English Bulldog. While the origin of this crossbreed is unknown, it probably originated in the Boston area, in Massachusetts USA in the early s for fighting and hunting purposes. The English Bulldog Hailing from the United Kingdom, English Bulldogs were originally bred as fighting dogs for bullbaiting and bull-holding. When these cruel activities were banned in the early 19th century, the breed was developed to create a more affectionate and non-aggressive dog that turned into a popular pet and mascot among the British. The breed has been recognised in the end of the 19th century by the American Kennel Club and the first dogs being mixed were from Boston, thus the breed designation. Once bred to be pit fighter dogs, Boston Terriers are now considered friendly and gentle pets. They make great therapy dogs and excel in sports, such as agility and obedience. Boston Bulldogs have short, fine, and soft hair that comes in a variety of colors, including brown, black, white, red, fawn, and tuxedo a color pattern occurring when dogs are one color, with a white patch on the chest, chin, and feet. Being a small to medium-sized dog, the Boston Bulldog weighs between 9 and 16 kg lbs and are 38 to 46 cm inches tall. Females are smaller and lighter than the males. Boston Bulldogs are really nice to be around, being affectionate, calm, and lovable dogs, quite intelligent and adaptable too. They are very good with children, having a stable character and playful attitude, without the yappy tendencies of their smaller Terrier relatives. As puppies, they are quite energetic, demanding a lot of attention, but their liveliness tends to decrease with age. They are devoted to their owners and while active, they easily adapt to different lifestyles. Boston Bulldogs are loyal dogs, with a curious and interesting personality, that combine the best of their parent breeds in terms of temperament. They also make good watchdogs, as they are alert to their environment. Always happy, the Boston Bulldog comes as a great choice as a pet, one to be included in all family activities. Trainability People-oriented, loyal, and intelligent, Boston Bulldogs gather all the traits that make a dog easy to train. In fact, they learn very quickly, obeying cues easily and responding well to training. They can be somewhat sensitive, so the best training method includes a kind, but firm and consistent approach. Sticking to rules is important, as these dogs like to know what is expected of them, as to comply and get the desired praise and attention they crave. Likewise, socialisation is important. Because his ancestors were bred to be fighting dogs, the Boston Bulldog needs to be exposed to positive interactions with other animals from an early age in order to end up as the best version of himself — a sociable and friendly dog towards others. Health Boston Bulldogs are generally healthy with a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Unlike his Bulldog relatives, the Boston Bulldog does not suffer from breathing issues and enjoy better health than both his parent breeds. Due to a sensitive skin and the presence of skin folds which may recreate a favourable habitat for bacterial proliferation , they may develop skin problems, including infections. This crossbreed is also sensitive to extreme weather conditions, being susceptible to suffer from heatstroke in hot climates. They are also prone to flatulence, which, while not a major health concern, may come as a nuisance. The major health concerns linked to this crossbreed are: Eye Issues Cataracts, which cloud the lens of the eye, causing impaired vision, and glaucoma, an eye condition caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye and optic nerve damage, are among the most common. Heart Problems Congestive heart failure due to mitral valve insufficiency translates into the inability of the heart to pump blood adequately and is a health issue that may be inherited from the Boston Terrier parent. Exercise and Activity Levels Boston Bulldogs are quite adaptable and do not need a lot of exercise, nor do they have high activity levels. Of course, being playful dogs, Boston Bulldogs will be the happiest in homes where their owners actively interact and play with them, regardless of the type of game or activity. As long as their owners engage with them, they will be content. Just remember that as puppies, Boston Bulldogs require a lot more attention and exercise to burn off all their energy. As they grow old, however, they will gladly curl up on the couch and ditch the exercise, being mostly inactive indoors. They do well in different settings — apartment or house, urban or rural — given they are protected from extreme weather conditions. Grooming Boston Bulldogs tend to shed quite a bit, so weekly brushing is recommended. Regardless, they are very low-maintenance and their coat is easy to groom. Because they have skin folds on their faces and body that are prone to develop irritation if not aired and kept dry, it is important to ensure these folds are clean, free from dirt or dead skin cells, and dry at all times. The same applies to their ears, which are also folded and may accumulate debris, creating a hot and humid environment that may lead to ear infections. Keeping their ears clean and dry, checking them regularly, is therefore a must. Frequent baths are not recommended. Boston Bulldogs should only take a bath when really necessary and using a hypoallergenic shampoo, as they have a sensitive skin. When in need of cleaning, using a soft damp cloth or towel is a good option, which can also be used for cleaning the folds and ears, making sure they are left dry afterwards. Boston Bulldogs will generally be happy to be groomed, especially when they have a consistent routine. Teeth brushing and nail clipping should also be part of their cleaning habits. Make sure when you are purchasing a Boston Bulldog from a breeder that you check out the health of the parent pups. Ask to see veterinary reports and evidence of health checks. No reputable breeder will refuse this, especially. Any English Bulldog mix is going to be gassy. The anatomy of the English Bulldog is to blame for this, unfortunately, although their diet can play a role as well. Bulldogs fart excessively because they tend to have highly sensitive stomachs. Their digestive system does not digest food well and causes consistently upset stomachs. Instead of having a longer muzzle, they have flatter faces that make it difficult for them to eat at a consistent pace. They tend to eat quickly and improperly, taking in far too much air at the same time as their food. Diet factors into their farty behavior as well. All the muscle hides a sensitive soul. They are a pup of averages between the two parent breeds in their build, energy levels, and health. Even though they are agile, they still have a more muscular build than other dogs that share a similar height. Even with the muscles, English Boston-Bulldogs have sensitive souls. The tender-hearted dogs are alert to the emotions running in the air around them and should be treated with patience. Being left alone for extended amounts of time leads to sadness and sometimes even depression. Although these dogs can have a stubborn streak, remember their sensitivity during training. You will get the best response out of them with a firm hand coupled with patience and kindness. Even with a mutually bloody past, the blend of these two dogs makes for a mellow companion. Both the English Bulldog and the Boston Terrier have rather gruesome histories. Unlike breeds like the Pit Bull or Rottweiler, however, they have lost most of the aggressive reputation that typically comes with a bloody past. Most of this is because of their sweet dispositions. The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds developed in America. They came from breeds that were pit fighter dogs originating in Boston, Massachusetts. These dogs were made to be small but fierce. In the late s, the wealthy began to have some of these dogs interbred to create the Boston Terrier, although the Terrier part is not through any relation to the family. The English Bulldog initially comes from the Mastiff family, having specific relations to the Asiatic Mastiff. This Mastiff was much bigger than dogs in the Mastiff family today. English Bulldogs were bred from these dogs to be smaller yet still muscular. Since then, however, both of the breeds have become beloved companion dogs with mellow, happy personalities. They take everything in stride, and as long as they are with their beloved owners, they are happy to be taken around or live in a wide variety of different living situations. However, as they start to age, they quickly begin to mellow out and calm down. They always retain their curious nature and goofy personality, though. This makes them an excellent, lower-maintenance dog breed. Some people say that Boston-Bulldogs make good watchdogs because of their alertness. However, they will need a good deal of training because they are friendly and enjoy being around people, strangers or no. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are patient and sweet, making them excellent dogs for families with kids. They have a heavier build that makes it harder for them to be inappropriately handled by kids, keeping them a safer dog for kids. However, most people will be pleased to know that Boston-Bulldogs typically get along well with other animals. Get them used to other animals, and brush up on their social skills by having them around new people and taking them out to dog parks. This designer breed loves their family, is devoted to them, and strives to be a committed, involved member of the family. Although the English Boston-Bulldog is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. English Boston-Bulldogs tend to make great family dogs. They bond closely with their families, are affectionate, and love nothing more than being with them. They also tend to have a playful, comedic personality paired with a calm, gentle nature. These dogs tend to get along fantastically with children. As long as they are properly socialized, they also get along well with other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. They can be prone to barking if boundaries for this behavior are not established early on or if they are inadvertently trained into it. The English Boston-Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They adapt well to just about any home including apartments. But, as a brachycephalic dog breed, they are highly sensitive to heat and cold. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond so closely with their families. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? Just as a mixed-breed dog could inherit nothing from their parent breeds, they could also inherit any combination of the potential health conditions common to their parents or even all of them. In the case of the English Boston-Bulldog, potential health concerns to be aware of include cherry eye, skin infections, glaucoma, cataracts, and heart problems. Because they are a snub-nosed dog breed, they are at a higher risk for heat stroke in higher temperatures. So, you need to be careful in the heat and also use safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to keep them from overheating. Reputable breeders will be screening their dogs to avoid passing congenital issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask to see results or clearances from any tests that have been done. This dog breed tends to be highly trainable and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They are intelligent and pick up on things quickly. Plus, they are eager to please. They can be stubborn at times, especially if they are bored with repetition. Although this can be a challenge for first-time dog owners, they can usually navigate it well as long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward. These dogs are sensitive and will strive to perform to your expectations as long as those expectations are clearly and consistently communicated. On top of that, they offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. An English Boston-Bulldog has a short coat that sheds a little year-round. Because debris can get in their large eyes and trapped in their wrinkles, you need to regularly check these areas and clean as needed to help prevent irritation and other issues. Weekly ear checks can go a long way in helping to prevent ear infections. Ears should be dry, clean, and free of debris, redness, or other concerning things. A good dental care routine is also essential. English Boston-Bulldogs will be full of energy as puppies and will mellow out a little as they age. They will be in a more moderate activity range when they are young with bursts of energy while playing. As they age, they tend to settle into a lower activity range. Daily walks plus plenty of playtime are usually enough for these dogs. English Boston-Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weighs pounds. English Boston-Bulldog generally lives for years. They weigh 20 to 35 pounds and stand 15 to 18 inches tall, with females being smaller and lighter. Their upper lip is large and covers an undershot lower jaw, while their eyes are deep-set and dark in color. Finishing off the look is a low-carried short tail. Overall, the English Boston Bulldog is an attractive dog with a unique appearance. They are known for their calm temperament and love for children. Although they are energetic as puppies, they become more mellow as they age. They are affectionate dogs that are easy to care for and do not require a lot of living space. English Boston Bulldogs are sweet dogs and great for living in apartments, small homes, cities, suburbs, or rural areas. They are easy to integrate into family life and respond well to training. English Boston Bulldogs are quick learners, so you can expect to train them with fewer repetitions. To get the best response from English Boston Bulldogs, giving them lots of praise and rewards is essential, as they crave attention and affection. Socialize your puppy from an early age by taking them out to meet other dogs and people. A trip to the dog beach or park can be enjoyable, and they can also learn valuable skills to coexist with other dogs peacefully. Health and Lifespan English Boston Bulldogs are great companions, but they require certain care to ensure they live a long, healthy life. They can enjoy a lifespan of 12 to 15 years with proper care and attention. One important factor to remember is their sensitivity to heat. Limiting their time outdoors and providing a cool, comfortable indoor environment can make a big difference. English Boston Bulldogs can also be prone to various health concerns. You may see conditions like skin infections or heart problems. Eye issues , like glaucoma, cherry eye, and cataracts, are also common. Maintaining regular vet check-ups can catch these conditions early, helping your Boston Terrier English Bulldog mix to live a healthier, happier life. Exercise Needs English Boston Bulldog photo courtesy of juanmedz on Instagram While English Boston Bulldogs might not be the most demanding breed in terms of physical activity, they still need their daily dose of exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Activities such as walking, playing, or a trip to the dog park for 30 minutes to an hour each day can be enough to keep your English Boston Bulldog fit and content. Ignoring their exercise needs can have detrimental effects on their overall health and well-being. Be sure to use shampoo for sensitive skin since they are susceptible to skin irritations. If your dog has wrinkles on their face or body, keep them clean and dry to prevent potential skin problems. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe around these areas and dry the skin gently folds thoroughly. Start training your English Boston Bulldog at a young age to become comfortable with teeth cleaning and brushing. Teaching this practice becomes more challenging when they reach maturity. However, as your English Boston Bulldog grows, it will appreciate the care and quickly adapt to regular grooming. Rainbow Bridge. And a very warm welcome Flomiss Goldens. We are a very small family run breeder based in a small village near Kettering, Northamptonshire. We have kept and bred Goldens for over 27 years, and have developed a great reputation for supplying happy, healthy, quality puppies, as well as providing a great support service for the life of the puppy. We have a maximum of three breeding bitches at any time. Our normal breeding pattern is generally two litters overall every months between all our girls. Our girls when bred from have over 18 months minimum between each litter and 3 litters in their lifetime unless there is a highly compelling reason to allow a 4th and final to be bred. The remainder of our bitches are neutered and retired. Sadly most of these have long since gone over the Rainbow Bridge My 2 old ladies who are still with us now live with my family members out of our home but still close by and are seen twice weekly. Our dogs are our family pets and always live indoors in our home No kennelling or outbuildings are ever used to house our dogs. Our puppies are reared indoors and are never outside other than to play, and they are never left unsupervised. We have many other pets at home, so the puppies are used to cats, chickens etc. My elderly mum is often here and is disabled, therefore the puppies become accustomed to wheelchairs and canes, so remain calm and un-fazed by most things they see around them. Our puppies are introduced to the youngest family members as they are born and are handled by them from a few hours after birth which aids in ensuring they are never aggressive toward children. The mothers are very calm and balanced and never raise so much as an eyebrow when they find a small human in the whelping box with their puppies, which, in a family home, does happen from time to time. We are on our 9th generation now, and are so very proud of each and every dog we have raised, breeding for good looks and a great temperament. The constant grooming and bathing for showing would not do for any of us as we like the great outdoors too much. The puppies, however, would be as suited to being shown and the choice regarding whether or not to show will be up to the new owners. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Breeds The link has been copied! Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world and for a good reason. They make wonderful family pets due to their friendly personalities, endless loyalty, and high intelligence. However, before bringing one into your home, it is essential to consider the costs associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In this article, we'll explore the question, "How much does a Golden Retriever cost? The overall price of a Golden Retriever can vary widely depending on a number of factors, such as the dog's age, lineage, and location. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that buying a puppy is just the beginning of the expenses associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In addition to the initial price, routine vet visits and vaccinations are necessary to keep your Golden Retriever healthy and prevent illnesses. These costs can add up quickly, especially in the first year of your dog's life when they require more frequent check-ups and vaccines. Your dog will typically require annual check-ups and routine vaccinations throughout their life. You can also choose to microchip your pet for additional security measures. Another ongoing expense associated with owning a Golden Retriever is grooming. While Golden Retrievers are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming compared to some other breeds, they do require regular brushing and occasional baths. So, you will need to set aside adequate funds for this care. A Golden Retriever puppy cost can vary. The overall price will depend on whether you choose to purchase from a breeder or adopt from a rescue organization. However, it is essential to note that some breeders will charge more for puppies that have exceptional bloodlines or rare coat colors. If you choose to adopt a Golden Retriever puppy from a rescue organization, the adoption fee is usually much lower than the purchase price from a breeder. It is important to note that adoption fees will usually cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and shelter for the puppy while in the rescue organization's care. Often if you choose to adopt from a rescue or dog shelter, the pet will come into your family already spayed or neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. Color One of the most significant factors is the color of the puppy. Golden Retrievers typically come in shades of gold, but some may have a slightly darker or lighter coat, which can create variations in their price. For instance, puppies with lighter-colored coats may be more expensive than those with darker coats. Bloodline Puppies with a pedigree from a well-known champion bloodline are often more expensive than those without a proven lineage. This cost difference is because they are likely to have a superior appearance, temperament, and overall health characteristics. Often dogs from such lineage come with documentation and official paperwork to verify their background. A quality breeder who has invested time and resources in breeding and raising quality Golden Retrievers may charge a higher price for their puppies. This reason is that they are more likely to provide you with a healthy and well-socialized puppy. Estimated Size Finally, the estimated size of the puppy can impact the cost. Typically, male Golden Retrievers are larger than females, and puppies from larger litters may be smaller than those from smaller litters. Owing to that, puppies from a smaller litter may be more expensive as they tend to be in higher demand. Overall, it is essential to consider all of these factors when looking to purchase a Golden Retriever to ensure that you get the best value for your money. As we've discussed, the cost of purchasing and maintaining a Golden Retriever can quickly add up. However, they can also adopt a more laid-back lifestyle if they don't receive regular exercise. The lifetime care costs of a Golden Retriever will often depend on factors such as their health, age, and lifestyle. Budgeting for these costs and planning accordingly to ensure that your furry friend receives the care they need throughout their lifetime is essential. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Golden Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog can be significantly less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder, and it also helps to reduce the number of dogs in shelters. Another way to save money is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may have already gone through the training process, which can save on the cost of obedience classes and training supplies. They may also be less demanding in terms of exercise and may already be house-trained, which can save on cleaning and flooring expenses. When buying a Golden Retriever puppy, it's crucial to find a breeder who will always prioritize the health and life quality of their dogs. A breeder should be able to provide you with health guarantees, documentation of the puppy's lineage, and proof of vaccinations and other necessary medical treatments. Moreover, it's also a good idea to visit the breeder's facility and meet the puppy's parents, if possible, to get a sense of the breeding environment and the temperament of the puppies. While it may be tempting to choose the cheapest option when buying a Golden Retriever, doing so can lead to additional expenses down the line if the puppy develops health problems that require expensive medical treatment. A reputable breeder may have higher upfront costs but is more likely to produce healthy puppies with fewer genetic health issues. This initial extra cost can ultimately save you money and heartache in the long run. By taking the time to research breeders and consider all options carefully, you can save on the initial cost of owning a Golden Retriever while still providing a loving home for a furry companion. Some shots are highly recommended but still optional, while the rabies shot is a legal requirement in the United States. You will also need to purchase a monthly flea and tick medication like Frontline to keep your dog free of parasites, especially if it spends a lot of time outside. Foods with corn listed as the first ingredient will be less expensive, but they are primarily empty calories that will cause your dog to gain weight and feel hungry again more quickly. You can keep up with your pet using inexpensive brushes and combs to keep the coat looking nice and reduce shedding. A thorough brushing every few days should be enough. We also recommend brushing the teeth of your Golden Retriever as often as possible with a pet-safe toothpaste to help slow the progression of dental disease, and you may need to trim the nails on occasion if you hear them clicking on the floor. A professional groomer can help you keep the dog looking nice and is usually not that expensive. Most Golden Retrievers will only need their monthly dose of flea and tick medication that will also help protect them from heartworm. Some people try to avoid this medication, but the cost of eliminating a flea infestation and Lyme disease medication can be much more expensive. When you need it, you will be glad you have it. There is no need for litter boxes, aquariums, heat lamps, humidity concerns, etc. Your dog will be happy by your side in any weather. Monthly washing of the bed liner and any towels it uses frequently is all that is required. Products like the Bark Box can be a great way to keep your dog entertained at a relatively low cost. However, there is a high likelihood you can find one at a local animal shelter for significantly less. Saving Money on Golden Retriever Care The best way to reduce your healthcare costs when owning a Golden Retriever is to pay close attention to the recommended portion size on your food package. You should also avoid giving too many treats, or your dog will become overweight, which can lead to several health problems that will increase your costs. Monthly expenses can be quite low compared to other pets that require you to maintain habitat temperatures and humidity. One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog. Read the full disclosure here. Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. You can protect your dog with a microchip, but there are other steps you can take. The Fi GPS tracking dog collar helps you keep your dog safe. The design is highly resistant and waterproof for durability, and the collar comes with a battery that lasts three months. You can track your pet anywhere and locate them easily if they get lost. There are a few things you should know about this working breed. Personality of the German Shepherd German Shepherds are fiercely loyal. They make excellent guard dogs thanks to their protective instincts. They also make amazing pets who will give you lots of affection. GSDs are reliable and hardworking dogs who thrive if you constantly give them new tasks and challenges. These dogs are extremely versatile. German Shepherds have amazing potential and tend to do extremely well in training thanks to their drive and intelligence. However, they require consistent training and handling since they can be mouthy, chase prey, or become overprotective without the right training. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. Here are a few tips to help you lower the cost. Look for a breeder who cares about the animals and who does health testing on the parents, but everything else is extra. You should also consider adopting a dog with an unknown lineage. Check local shelters or go online to look at classified ads. Check classified ads to find owners rehoming their pets. For someone that is not experienced with the breed all the fancy abbreviations are not making much sense and often a pedigree is just a list of names. How to tell if the pedigree is breed-worthy? We often think that the higher the price, the higher the quality - but is it always true? Nobody wants to pay more if the same quality is available for less, but how to tell the difference? We will try our best to answer these and many other questions on this page and hopefully, will explain the GSD pricing and what impacts it, what to look for and if you do get what you pay for. How much should a German Shepherd cost? Let us be honest - when it comes to quality German Shepherd Dogs, there is no "cheap". We have great connections with breeders in USA, we stay in touch and monitor the market. We know what is offered for sale and what pricing policy different kennels are following. To this day we have yet to see a well-bred quality German Shepherd Dog puppy for sale at less than two thousand US dollars. There is a lot of time and funds invested into quality breeding stock dogs, training, health testing, food and care of the dogs. Responsible Breeders and enthusiasts are barely breaking even after selling their pups. Opposed to them are many "back-yard breeders" or pet owners that have no knowledge of the breed and the breeding requirements. They see an opportunity to make quick money and decide to breed their pet dogs in most times not even mature to a healthy breeding age and far off the breed conformation to produce " pet quality" puppies. When a buyer comes to a reputable breeder and gets set off by a high price, they seek someone with cheaper version. Who needs those fancy show titles and lengthy pedigree if all I want is just a pet? We firmly believe that back-yard-breeders are the biggest scam of the GSD breeding. In most cases, these dogs even come with an AKC registration, but this does not add quality to the puppy. Registration is just that - a registration and not a sign of quality. Every registration will come with a pedigree and quality pedigree does add quality, but nor a registration itself. We have seen pedigrees where none of the dogs on the entire pedigree hold any working or show titles. We have seen pedigrees where zero dogs in five generations have passed genetic health testing. So, when a person is trying to look for a low-cost German Shepherd Dog and goes to a BYB, they are most likely purchasing a mixed breed dog with a poor conformation and faulty temperament. In lines where dogs were not tested for generations is a high possibility of genetic health problems. Meanwhile, this "pet breeder" does not even see or understand the difference: we sometimes see advertisement of puppies for sale and can not believe our eyes. Everything on the ad screams: "Not a German Shepherd", but most people don't see it.Does this seems like a great deal to you? No to us! Not every litter is the same and our pricing reflects that accordingly. Show and Working homes that seek full AKC Registration need to contact us for pricing for puppies sold with full AKC - that will differ on a litter and situation. We accept PayPal transfers, Cash or Checks and may offer flexible payment plan options to help families that desire to have a dog, but can not afford to pay the full price up front. If dogs are sold in Wisconsin, we also charge sales tax in the amount 5. When we purchased our dogs, we paid at least double of what we are asking for the puppies. Many puppy buyers want to have a proof that their dog is a purebred. A pedigree of a dog is a first important point to consider when choosing a new puppy. But pedigree means very little when a person does not know how to read it or does not understand what to look for in a pedigree. It is essential that the buyer learns how to read a pedigree OR that a breeder explains a pedigree to a buyer. Not every pedigree is the same and some pedigrees mean very little, if nothing and are just bunch of names. Literally — just a bunch of names with absolutely no value. The names are just that — what the owner have named their dog and are not a real title. We have also made up this name for this article, but you get the idea, right? A puppy with a quality pedigree will have several generations of health tested, shown and titled dogs. Yes, not every breeder posts images of their dogs online, but there would be show mentions, trial mentions or pages created by other users on specialized dog-related websites, such as pedigreedatabase user created , workingdog or similar. How many VA dogs are on a pedigree and how far on a pedigree are they? Remember, all titles and health testing can be looked up. Also, pedigree allows to see inbreeding — breeding from closely related animals, especially over many generations. A good breeder understands the consequences of inbreeding and it is not uncommon to see inline breeding starting at sharing the same dog on a third line - puppy is "0", parents are 1, grandparents are 2, great-grandparents are 3 this is the closest inbreeding allowed. Not only this is unethical, but persistent inbreeding has produced an unusually high frequency of sufferers from genetic diseases and abnormalities. Pedigree is important, as it provides information on lineage, whether or not every dog on the pedigree is health tested, shown, titled, meets breed conformation and temperament. Each line has its own conformation standard, temperament traits and working abilities. Therefore, for this article we are going to quote a fellow hobby-breeder, Len from Hektor Haus. These shepherds should at a very minimum be AKC certified. With no paperwork, free might be acceptable if you just want to give a dog a new home. Hopefully the people responsible for their actions would also cover deworming, vaccinations and other fees. Unfortunately, American lines are now in hands of back-yard breeders, this has caused bad reputation of the breed, high number of health issues and lots of shelter dogs. We do not breed American Lines, as they do not satisfy our standards of breeding. German Working Line: These Shepherds range depending on the breeder, facilities, bloodline, etc. They can be more with additional training. German Show Lines: These are dogs that adhere to the breed standard and are significantly different animals. While any dog can be an excellent companion, these are beautiful, extraordinary family members with a little less drive than the working line. All health testing of a dog can also be looked up. It is important to understand what lines the dog comes from and how many dogs on the pedigree were tested and what grades were given to the dogs on the pedigree. A good breeder will have a record of all health testing for their breeding dogs and will be happy to show a proof of the grade. For OFA-evaluated dogs, a Certificate is issued and results can be found online. It is extremely important to evaluate the entire lineage. For German Shepherd, these are optional and are not a requirement for breeding. They simply are a tool to utilize while making breeding decisions. DM results are seen more now, while the test is not a guarantee to avoid a DM in puppies. Many times we see DM test being the only test done, as it is relatively low cost and can be done at home, without a visit to a vet. DM tested dog is NOT health tested dog. So, the chances of genetic health issues in a puppy are minimized. Breeders can only do their very best to carefully choose breeding stock dogs and health test them prior to breeding to minimize the risks of any health issues in puppies and trust that Mother Nature will allow only the best genes to be passed on. Just like in humans, two healthy parents can unfortunately have a baby with a health issue. Of course, in our human world feelings take over the genetic imbalances. But being a breeder, we choose the dogs we are letting to mate to produce a litter and therefore, we can analyze the dogs prior to the breeding to see how they are comparable and healthy. Working with a healthy pool of genes and choosing the best — brings the chances of health issues to a minimum. We also find it ethical to health test any dog before deciding to breed to ensure that this dog is capable to have a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery. When it comes to it, when you look at parents, do they look like the dog you dream to own? What do the titles mean? Given only to a group of outstanding German shepherds at a Sieger show. Outstanding German shepherds with full dentition and good character. Really about average, given to typical but not exceptional animals. Given to below average dogs. Poor quality dogs but of tolerable character. Given to dogs with faulty character or serious faults, ungraded. Why is this important? While a breed standard for a German Shepherd Dog is clearly written and can be found online, we must understand why some dogs rank higher, why some are disqualified and what to look for. One way to do so - is to look at dog or images of the dog shows yourself. The more dogs you see, the better you understand the quality of the breed. We believe that if a person can not see a difference, and to them "a dog is a dog", they most likely are better off adopting a dog from a shelter anyway. To us, the difference between well-bred and poorly-bred dog is tremendous, and just by looking at the images of parents or puppies, we can see where the breeding is going and what potential a puppy has. Please note, that we are not for breeding "the best looking dogs" only - No! They all are equally important. A good responsible breeder will do anything possible to stay as close to the breed standard as possible and eliminate breed faults from their breeding. Therefore, off-colors, off-size and off-temperament dogs must not be used in breeding. It must be a big red flag for a buyer. Jean-Francois: How much is a purebred German Shepherd puppy without papers worth? I'm guessing it's a rip-off. Our nonpaper German shepherd just had 12, her 1st litter of no papers German shepherd pups. You can visually see the traits. I do suggest making sure vaccinations are given before buying the puppy. Answer by JTP Actually, that is a great price! I would even say that's pretty cheap, especially since it's a German Shepherd. Answer by SuperGirl It doesn't matter if the parents have papers. Parents with papers should have puppies that have papers as well. I'm also guessing mom and dad don't really have papers either, because papers come to puppies with papered parents. Answer by Kayleigh Let me explain what happened to us. I was young at the time and didn't realize what "limited" rights were. This means the woman who sold me my puppy would not give me the right to register my purebred GSD as a purebred GSD unless I got her spayed. We bought her with the intention of eventually breeding and keeping some puppies for ourselves but also selling a few. I would be breeding my dog with a purebred GSD who is registered, but since I cannot register my dog due to this lady's way of giving me limited rights I would not be able to register the pups either. She is our rescue dog. I got a blood test done that shows she is a purebred German Shepherd, but there is no way of knowing whether she was registered or not. We are going to breed her with one of my friend's purebred German Shepherd males. I was thinking of selling the puppies for around , which is about 1, dollars cheaper than what they are selling registered puppies for in this area. The picture of puppies in the bathtub is a past litter of German Shepherd puppies from Robin Blue. They are all adults now and all have happy loving homes and awesome families they live with. I have been a German Shepherd breeder since .I have all colors black and tan, black and silver, black and red, bi-color, black, white, black and tan brindle, sable brindle, silver sable, tan sable, fawn, blue, liver, and red sable of German Shepherd puppies. I have German Shepherd puppies for sale as pets that are wonderful, loving, family protectors. boxer spaniel mix puppies - They have a short muzzle and have been bred to have an even and pleasant temperament which makes them a great companion for families with children. They are very playful in nature and even have some hilarious moments as they thrive for human attention and long, lasting friendships. French Bulldogs are typically less than 28 pounds. They're consistently in the top 10 of most popular registered dog breeds in America. Before you start asking where can I find a "French Bulldog for sale near me" you need to make sure it's the right breed for you. Here is everything you need to know about French Bulldogs, including their history, appearance, disposition, activity level, care needs, and cost. History French Bulldogs are the result of a cross between Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local ratter dogs in Paris, France, in the s. The breed was then exported to France, where it became known as the Bouledogue Francais. In , these dogs were brought back to England and they eventually made their way to America. Frenchies are now their own specific breed. Appearance When it comes to appearance, the number one thing people associate with them are their large, bat-like ears that are set high on their heads. French Bulldog puppies for sale typically have a stocky build with short legs, a large head, and a stubby tail. A French Bulldog puppy has a wrinkly appearance and a short nose and muzzle. French Bulldogs typically weigh between 20 and 28 pounds and stand 12 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder. Their incredibly gorgeous, short-haired and long-haired coats come in several colors and patterns, such as fawn, tan, brown, chocolate, cocoa, blue or dilute, cream, lilac, Isabella, black, brindle, piebald, and merle. Disposition If you're looking for a small, lovable companion dog, you can't go wrong with a Frenchie. These dogs are known for their affectionate, gentle nature and loving, easygoing personality, and they make great pets for families with children. They can be lively and hilarious. Searching for "French Bulldog puppies near me for sale" and finding the right pup will leave you a companion dog through and through. They love nothing more than to cuddle up with their favorite person and they make excellent lap dogs. They do well in homes with children and other pets, although they can be a bit boisterous at times. They don't bark much and don't like to be left alone for long periods of time. French Bulldog puppies thrive in any environment from apartments to rural areas. Activity Level Looking for French Bulldogs for sale may have you wondering how much exercise a Frenchie requires to be happy and healthy. They are relatively inactive dogs and don't require a lot of exercise, although they do enjoy occasional walks and playtime. They are a great choice for busy people. You won't need a large yard for a Frenchie. Grooming Requirements French Bulldogs are relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming needs. They can have a short coat that is smooth and soft to the touch. Some long-haired French Bulldog puppies are called Fluffies. When it comes to grooming, French Bulldog puppies only need to be brushed occasionally, and their nails should be trimmed regularly. They are also moderate shedders, so you'll need to do some regular vacuuming to keep your home clean. Training Opting for a French Bulldog puppy for sale is the perfect choice if you're looking for a funny, even-tempered, social pup. Training them can be more challenging since they are so incredibly stubborn. These dogs have big personalities and a mind of their own. You can make training a French Bulldog puppy into a game and offer rewards like food or treats, praise, and playtime. However, with consistency and motivation, their people-pleasing personality will have them trained in no time. Cost If you're wondering, where can I find a "French Bulldog puppy for sale near me? French Bulldog puppies for sale can be higher priced due to their coat length, genetic makeup, and rare coat colors, including which genes they carry, such as the intensity coat color gene variant, dilution, merle, lilac, or Isabella. They also have some health problems that can be expensive to treat, such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and respiratory issues, so be aware of these expenses in addition to regular veterinarian care. However, with proper care, a Frenchie can be a loving and loyal companion for years to come. When looking for Frenchies for sale, it's crucial to factor in the ongoing costs beyond just the initial price. Food, toys, veterinary care, vaccinations, and other ongoing expenses should be taken into consideration. For instance, if you're planning to travel with a fluffy friend, be ready to pay for a pet-friendly transportation service. However, for many owners, the joy and companionship that these beautiful pups provide are well worth the investment. If you're looking for French Bulldog puppies near me, be sure to research breeders carefully. A trustworthy breeder with Frenchie puppies for sale will provide documentation of vaccinations and other health records for their puppies. A good breeder will also be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed, including size, temperament, and grooming needs — so don't be afraid to ask away! While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water.
