How much bigger will my Golden Retriever get? There are a few ways you can estimate how much bigger your Golden Retriever will get. If they are less than a year old, they still need more time to reach their full adult size. Many Golden Retrievers can take up to two years to completely fill out, though their weight at one year old is usually close to their full adult weight. A puppy is rarely larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you a general idea of their maximum weight. If their paws still look large or oversized next to their body and legs, they are probably still filling out and have some growing left to do, as this is a classic sign of adolescence in canines. What is the size of a full-grown Golden Retriever? As adults, Golden Retrievers will appear overall symmetrical and have a powerful body hidden beneath beautiful, golden fur. Golden Retrievers are stunning, sunny dogs that easily steal our hearts. Unfortunately, as a purebred dog breed, they are more susceptible to genetic diseases, which can compromise their lifespan and quality of life. However, many genetic disorders can be treated or prevented with regular veterinary care. Remember that prevention is almost always easier and less expensive than treatment. Your veterinarian may recommend a large-breed growth food to your Golden Retriever puppy to support their growth rate which can help prevent or decrease the severity of hip dysplasia in adulthood. According to the Veterinary Centers of America , Golden Retrievers are also more prone to gaining excess weight. Golden Retrievers are also susceptible to various genetic health disorders, such as oral tumors and aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis is most commonly found in large, purebred dogs, including Golden Retrievers, and occurs when the aortic valves to the heart narrow. Aortic stenosis causes the body to struggle to pump blood through the valve, creating additional stress on the body. If untreated, aortic stenosis can lead to muscle failure and even fatality. However, veterinarians can treat many genetic diseases like aortic stenosis and oral tumors through surgery and medication. Even with proper prevention and wellness care, necessary veterinary visits can be expensive, with many treatments costing thousands of dollars. Out of over 20, pet parents surveyed , only .The last thing you should be focused on when the worst happens is how to finance a needed surgery or treatment for your beloved pet. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. But they can also be a handful! To help you understand and appreciate your 6-month old golden retriever, and to set them and you up for success, we brought Steffi Trott in to help. Adult goldens are friendly , intelligent , and energetic. They are wonderful companions who bond closely with their human families. Goldens are also extremely tolerant of children , and they make great playmates for adventurous youngsters. These irresistible balls of fluff love to play, chew , explore, get into trouble, and generally grab life by the horns. Six-month-old golden retrievers fall in the middle of the pack. Is your golden retriever puppy a perfectly behaved angel? Adult male goldens typically stand 23 to 24 inches tall, while adult female goldens typically weigh between 55 to 65 pounds. When golden retrievers are about 18 months old, they have generally grown to their full weight. When they reach that milestone, their body structure will also have filled out accordingly. On average, however, a six-month-old puppy will happily eat three cups of food daily. When a puppy reaches that six-month milestone, they should begin to eat two meals each day: a morning meal and an evening meal. Feeding him the proper type and amount of food will help him to get the required nutrients. Over time, he could easily become obese from consuming the extra calories. Both sets of dogs should get light to moderate exercise for an hour or two each day. Very young puppies should get their exercise from vigorous play sessions plus a short daily walk or two. On the other hand, a healthy six-month-old golden can likely handle longer walks and even a short jog on occasion. Take your golden for fun, energetic walks on wooded trails, grass, concrete, and other surfaces. Also, remember that puppies love to chase things, romp and roll on the ground, and play tug of war. Provide extra physical and mental stimulation by introducing puzzle games and fun new chew toys. Avoid high-energy agility classes or extended hikes over challenging terrain. Overly strenuous exercise can eventually lead to bouts of lameness and even improperly formed bones. Remember, variety and consistency are key to a positive outcome. Behaviors: Evolution and Expectations Newly minted golden retriever puppies are both charming and challenging. Consistent reinforcement of puppy obedience training will help you and your dog to come through this challenging period together. At this stage, these delightful little creatures really want to please their owners. Acquiring good basic obedience skills will provide a needed behavioral framework for your dog. And, having this behavioral structure in place will be quite valuable in his next stage of development. Group obedience classes also provide plenty of opportunities to socialize with other dogs of roughly the same age. And, consistent obedience work enables you to develop a sense of trust and a stronger bond with your dog. You want to establish the most important manners and behaviors for daily life in your dog now, including: Waiting in front of doorways Standing still while you reach for the collar and attach a leash Walking nicely next to you Being patient while you brush their coat Months: Fight Undesirable Behaviors with 2 Tactics Six-month-old golden retrievers are like distracted, moody teenagers. They frequently become focused on their surroundings, and often tend to ignore familiar commands. This previously outgoing puppy may also seem shy and reclusive on occasion. When your good-natured, cooperative puppy reaches that six-month mark, he could also become irritable and unpredictable. He might engage in destructive digging or chewing behavior , and may also launch into extended barking fits without warning. Simply put, this fidgety young golden retriever may be bored and restless. True to his breed standard, this energetic dog is ready to race through fields and marshes to retrieve fallen birds for his owner. And, regular workouts will help to prevent him from putting on unwanted pounds. This feisty young dog also needs some compatible playmates. Once he finds them, the best buddies will likely enjoy wrestling and racing around. Always make sure to balance physical exercise with mental challenges as well. Using food puzzles to feed your dog or teaching him a new trick with part of his dinner will keep his brain working. This can actually tire him out even more than purely physical exercise! Share 0 Shares Pretty much all Golden Retrievers are cute, but your 6-month-old pup will seem especially adorable to you because of their cute little awkward teenager bodies. But as adorable as they are, they can be frustrating as well. Your 6-month-old pup is right smack in the middle of these two developmental stages in what is known as canine adolescence. This means your pup is now a teenager. But right now it should be exciting to watch your pup in this stage because the world is their oyster. There are lots of new experiences to introduce them to. However, male pups will need a higher caloric intake to account for their bigger body structures, and you should feed them more like 4 or 5 cups per day. You should feed your puppy quality dog food to help facilitate their growth. Your pup is probably learning about the wonders of human foods at this time, but you need to severely limit how much of these you feed them. Golden Retrievers are quite prone to obesity like many of us, they like food, too. Your pup can now enjoy exercise for an hour or two per day. Strategies for Addressing Puppy Biting Behavior Puppies can get nippy during their fun exploration of the world around them. The good news is that this is a natural habit for pups, and there are ways to deal with it. Positive reinforcement training: Reward good behavior with treats or praise to encourage non-biting interactions. Socialization: Expose the puppy to different people and animals to help them learn appropriate play and bite inhibition. Time-outs: When the puppy becomes too bitey, temporarily remove attention to discourage the behavior. Consistency and patience: Stay consistent with training and be patient, as addressing biting behavior takes time and persistence. Golden Retriever puppies prefer to bite to initiate play, learn more about their surroundings, and adjust their bite pressure, especially when they are teething. Remember that young puppies have a lot of energy and may be more rambunctious than adult dogs. They are, however, eager to please and learn new things. Adult dogs may be more set in their ways but can still benefit from training. Conclusion At 6 months old, your Golden Retriever is embarking on a critical phase of development. For your new puppy to have a clean bill of health in the long-term, it is important to ensure that he hits all the growth milestones that are expected of this breed, especially in his formative years. But how can you tell whether or not your fur baby is on track? Unfortunately, the growth pattern of golden retrievers throughout different stages of puppyhood is so irregular that many dog parents often wonder if something is wrong with their puppies every time they notice minor physical changes. However, the good news is that while the growth pattern of each golden puppy is unique and different, they tend to go through similar growth stages and should be manifesting similar patterns. To help you make the most of your first moments with your Golden puppy, here are some of the necessary information and items that you need to know about your 6-month-old golden retriever. Generally, adult golden retrievers are intelligent, affectionate, and even-tempered. They are also playful, gentle with children, and get along with other pets and strangers. With an ever-smiling face, Goldens are known to make friends with nearly every person they meet. They are always eager to please owners, which probably explains why they respond perfectly to obedience training or why they make excellent service dogs. Golden retrievers are also exuberant and powerful dogs with lots of energy to spare. Your puppy will play with you, your children, other pets, and any new friend that he bumps into indiscriminately. This study by Duffy and Serpell also confirms that the behavior of a puppy by 6 months of age is a perfect indicator of their adult personality and temperament. Your puppy is highly likely to be more active and excitable than an adult golden retriever though, which makes early socialization very critical. A puppy that is exposed to different sights, sounds, people, and experiences will often grow up into a well-rounded dog. Like most dog breeds, golden retriever puppies are expected to hit varying weight goals as they age. So, how much should your 6 months old golden retriever puppy weigh? Well, if he is a girl, expect her to weigh between 29 and 72 lbs. Male Goldens tend to reach a higher overall weight, so expect your male puppy to weigh between 38 and 75 lbs. So, if your puppy is a working breed, expect his weight to be near the lower end of the mentioned weight ranges. Health: If your puppy is suffering from an underlying medical issue, his weight and natural growth may be compromised. Besides obesity, too much weight can leave your puppy with a host of health issues, including hip dysplasia, skeletal abnormalities, and osteochondrosis among others. At 6 months, your puppy may also manifest certain weird physical characteristics, including: Unusually long legs and tail Nose and ears may grow out Front legs may appear shorter than hind legs But all these growth irregularities are normal and will normalize soon. Being a high energy breed, your golden retriever puppy needs proper exercise to avoid health issues, hyperactivity, and behavioral issues. So, how much exercise should you expose your Golden puppy to at this age? Well, a good rule of thumb, according to U. This translates to 15 minutes of exercise for a 3-month old puppy and 30 minutes for a 6-month old puppy. We are talking about proper, structured exercise here—not just general play. Think of brisk walks on a leash, romping and rolling on the ground, gentle games of fetch, and tug of war. Introducing puzzle games and safe chew toys at this stage will also provide your puppy extra physical and mental stimulation. You should also be careful with your puppy over the next 6 months because it is the phase when he is most vulnerable to developing hip dysplasia. The short answer is: the distance he can cover in 30 minutes. Like exercise, the rule of thumb is about 5 minutes of walk for every month of age. If your puppy is used to an active lifestyle, for instance, he can handle well longer excursions. On the flip side, if he has never had an opportunity to exercise off-leash, he may not go far. The secret is to start off your puppy at a slower pace and increase the distance gradually. You can then increase it to 20 minutes walk at weeks. And by the time he is 6 months, he will comfortably do minutes walks albeit with plenty of breaks to keep him from tiring out. Other tips courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association that you can leverage to make the most out of your walks with your Golden Retriever puppy include: Ensure that you walk in a fenced area or areas that are far from motorists. If you are going to use a leash, allow your puppy to set the pace. If he tires out or gets bored and lies down, give him some time to rest. Avoid going too far from your home that you may need to push the puppy to keep him moving when he tires out. Start your puppy off with short walks, giving him plenty of opportunities to sniff around. As aforementioned, consider walking with your puppy on softer grounds. Long hikes over rough terrains are still potentially dangerous to your 6-month-old puppy. Increase the distances of your walks gradually Avoid taking your puppy for a walk during the coldest or hottest part of the day. If you are still confused, consult your vet. You could also talk with a local breeder or other golden retriever owners about their experiences with Golden puppies at 6 months of age. Most importantly, monitor your puppy for signs of fatigue as it could be a symptom of a more serious health problem as opposed to longer excursions. Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve shot waterfowl ducks, geese, upland game birds , in their mouth by softly carrying them back to the owners. Accordingly, it is in their genes to use their mouths a little more compared to other breeds. If your puppy has a chewing or mouthing problem at this stage of his life, therefore, you should understand that it is something in his genes. Additionally, your puppy may be starting to understand and define his role within the pack at this age. As a result, he may start manifesting territorial behaviors. The good news is that they have soft mouths remember that they had to gently carry the retrieved birds to their owners , so when they bite you, it is usually soft and less painful—nothing more than simply putting their mouths on you. Besides, the adult teeth of most golden retriever puppies come in around 4 months old, so their mouthing tendencies will slow down by the time they are 6 months old. It could be still prevalent in some puppies though. Consider getting your 6-month-old golden retriever plenty of plush and chew toys so that he stops using your hands as chew toys. Related Posts:.

Adjust the portion sizes accordingly if you notice significant weight gain or loss. Monitor their weight gain and adjust feeding amounts accordingly. While puppies naturally gain weight as they grow, excessive weight gain can lead to health issues such as joint problems. Keep an eye on their body condition and consult with your veterinarian if you have concerns about their weight. If your puppy is gaining too much weight, consider reducing the portion sizes slightly or switching to a lower-calorie puppy food formula. On the other hand, if they are not gaining enough weight or appear undernourished, consult with your vet to determine if an increase in portion size or a different type of food is necessary. By following these feeding guidelines, you can ensure that your French Bulldog puppy receives the nutrition they need during this crucial stage of growth. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be highly toxic for dogs. Even small amounts can cause symptoms like restlessness, increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, seizures or even death. This could lead to anemia and potentially life-threatening complications for your French Bulldog. The exact reason behind this toxicity is still unknown; however, ingestion of these fruits has been linked to kidney failure in some dogs. Xylitol: Sweetness Turns Sour Xylitol is an artificial sweetener commonly found in sugar-free products like gum or candy. While it may be harmless for humans, it can be extremely dangerous for dogs. If ingested by your French Bulldog, xylitol can cause a sudden release of insulin, leading to a rapid drop in blood sugar levels. This can result in seizures, liver failure, or even death. Opt for high-quality dog food specifically formulated for their needs. Look for options that include meat protein sources like chicken or salmon, as these are beneficial for their muscle development and overall health. Make sure the food you choose contains adequate amounts of vitamins and fatty acids to promote healthy skin and coat. Avoid foods with excessive fat content that could lead to weight gain or digestive issues such as loose stools. Stick to dog-friendly fruits and veggies as treats instead. Chicken fat as dog food High-fat meats, chicken skin and fat from steaks or roasts are not recommended. Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis. This can be a very painful condition for dogs. Providing a healthy diet is essential for their overall health and well-being. Opting for lean proteins like chicken and turkey ensures they receive high-quality nutrients without excessive fat content. These proteins promote muscle development, support growth, and provide essential amino acids for overall health. Opt for natural alternatives that are free from these artificial additives. Whole Grains: Nourishing Carbohydrate Sources Carbohydrates play a role in providing energy to your puppy. However, not all carbohydrates are created equal. Instead of fillers like corn or wheat that offer limited nutritional value, look for whole grains such as brown rice or oats. These whole food ingredients provide fiber, vitamins, minerals while promoting steady energy levels throughout the day. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Promoting Healthy Skin and Coat To maintain healthy skin and a lustrous coat on your furry friend, incorporate omega-3 fatty acids into their diet. Sources like fish oil offer an abundance of these beneficial fats that nourish their skin from within. Not only do omega-3s contribute to a shiny coat but they also help reduce inflammation and support healthy skin and overall health. By opting for lean proteins, avoiding artificial additives, incorporating whole grains, and including omega-3 fatty acids, you are providing the essential nutrients they need to thrive. Obesity can lead to various health problems such as joint issues, heart disease, and respiratory difficulties. To keep track of their weight effectively, consider using a digital scale designed for pets or consult with your veterinarian. Adjusting Portion Sizes French Bulldogs have different dietary requirements based on their activity level and age. Puppies require more calories and nutrients to support their growth and development compared to adult dogs. To determine the appropriate portion size for your puppy or adult dog, consider consulting with animal nutritionists or your veterinarian. They can provide personalized recommendations based on factors such as breed-specific needs and individual metabolism. Excessive treats can contribute to weight gain if not properly regulated. Instead of relying solely on treats for positive reinforcement, try using praise or playtime as alternative rewards. Be mindful of the calorie content in both regular meals and treats. When we were originally considering getting a Frenchie, we quickly discovered that blue French Bulldogs were far more expensive than any other color. We ended up opting for a standard colored Frenchie instead and we love him, of course. However, this process did give us a very good insight into how much Blue French Bulldog costs, so I wanted to share that with you today. How much are Blue French Bulldogs? Part of the reason that blue Frenchies are one of the most expensive dog breeds is because of the medical costs involved in the breeding process. Like all dog breeds, if you are looking for a pure-bred Frenchie then adopting a puppy from a professional breeder is recommended. Because of this, professional breeders often forgo natural birth altogether and instead choose to have C-sections performed see how much this costs to remove the puppies safely with minimal risk to their breeding dog. Breeders also often use artificial insemination to impregnate their dogs. This does tend to result in large vet bills which only help in driving up the price of blue French Bulldogs, although you should get the peace of mind the puppy you are buying is safe and healthy, with no repercussions of a difficult natural birth. Another factor when it comes to price is actually dependant on the color of the dog. Because of the high demand for these colors, it does mean that dogs and puppies with blue, tan and black fur are more expensive. Are blue French Bulldogs healthy? Many associations, however, do not recognize the blue Frenchie as an official member of the breed when it comes to competitions. This is because they believe that it suffers from too many different health issues ; but the fact of the matter is that while some Blue Frenchies do develop alopecia hair loss , many other variations of Frenchie are also affected. In reality, most blue French Bulldogs do not suffer from health issues any more than any other kind of Frenchie. I base this opinion on having spoken to owners of blue Frenchies as part of this research, rather than any scientific study. Do blue French Bulldogs shed more hair? French Bulldogs tend to shed their undercoat about twice a year. These guys are not hypoallergenic despite what you might have been told. How long do blue French Bulldogs live for? A healthy, well-bred dog is going to have a longer lifespan than one that had less than stellar origins, which is yet another reason why you should only consider buying puppies from reputable breeders rather than illegal puppy farms or unqualified breeders. Related questions If you are thinking about buying a blue French Bulldogs and are comfortable which how much they might cost, you should consider the following aspects too. What health issues do blue French Bulldogs have? As mentioned above, Blue Frenchies are not really any different to other types of French Bulldog, but that does mean that they may be susceptible to similar health conditions. Because of their breeding history and small, compact anatomy, French Bulldogs do unfortunately have a disposition towards physical and genetic health issues. Should I get a rescue blue French Bulldog? Getting a rescue dog is always a fantastic option and is always recommended especially if you are not looking for a pure-bred. As they are in high demand, blue Frenchie puppies are snapped up very quickly than more common pi-bald or brindle colors, but why not consider getting a slightly older pooch? Adult blue French Bulldogs are far calmer than hyperactive teenage dogs and are an excellent alternative if you are looking for a steady but loyal companion. In fact, if you do buy an adult from rescue, chances are how much you pay for a blue French Bulldog could be considerably less than the average. They are also quiet and often polite, although they can get a little territorial. Dogs are not born fully trained, so getting your puppy trained quickly can go a long way to unlearn their more negative traits. Conclusion Buying any dog is a huge commitment. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. They were brought to France by English workers and later bred along with French Terriers, which resulted in the first French Bulldogs. Due to their small muscular build , they were used for dog fighting and other blood sports such as bear and bull baiting. However, this quickly died down once the practices were made illegal. Believe it or not, Blue French Bulldogs actually have a genetic mutation, which is why they have such unique coloring. The socialites fell in love with these beautiful animals and quickly stole the heart of the French. Even popular figures such as the Morgans and the Rockefellers owned Frenchies, and the breed was recognized in as an official one by the American Kennel Club. They Are Usually Born Via Artificial Insemination Due to their build, which causes the males to be disproportionate to the females in terms of genital location, these bulldogs often have trouble mating. This can make things pretty exhausting, and breeders usually go to artificial insemination as a preferred method of helping these pups out a bit. It also makes each procedure a little more expensive, but it allows the breeders to monitor for any potential issues. In some cases, they may doggy paddle a bit, but they will give out fairly quickly due to their weight. Pool owners need to be vigilant about these dogs, especially in the summertime. However, American breeders loved the distinctive bat ears, and it became a thing after a rose-eared bulldog appeared at a British kennel club in the s. Image Credit: Angyalosi Beata, Shutterstock 4. These bullies are brachycephalic, which means they have shorter noses than other breeds—which explains their scrunched-up faces and profile. This is actually a breeding deformity and can cause a number of breathing difficulties. Dogs with small snouts can have trouble going for long walks or runs and may not do well in uncomfortably high temperatures. Issues such as heat stroke and heat stress are also very common for these dogs, as they will usually have more difficulty cooling themselves in hot weather. French Bulldog babies are laid-back, calm, and generally well-mannered dogs. They love to get belly rubs, and massages, and make for great kid pets. Frenchies love to be included in family activities. They are super affectionate and eager to give attention to their owners. But they can also be playful, active dogs that enjoy fetching toys, playing hide-and-seek with treats of course , and going for short walks. These dogs are gentle, kind, and known for being very patient with children and toddlers. Grooming the Blue French Bulldog Regular brushing is necessary to keep their thin coats shiny. Regular cleaning of their ears, facial folds, and anal sacs will help prevent them from becoming inflamed. General Health Care Similar to any of the dog breeds, Frenchies need routine vaccinations in addition to checks for intestinal parasites and heartworm. There are also treats that can help with this. However, you should consult your vet if your bulldog exhibits signs of stress, such as spitting up foam, or other irregular behavior. These dogs should stay active because weight problems such as obesity can be an issue for them, especially as they age. Just make sure not to push your bullie past its limit. Blue bullies, like other dwarf breeds of dogs, may have abnormal vertebrae or premature degeneration in their intervertebral disks. Although their spine is supported by strong musculature and generally good posture, degenerated discs can cause serious problems. Most symptomatic back issues are caused by disc disease—not abnormal vertebrae. However, most Frenchies are able to safely exercise moderately, which is important for maintaining a healthy weight and good physical health. They work hard to please their owners and will train with food, treats, or other motivations. Many Blue French Bulldogs are now able to compete in some agility and obedience contests. They are also excellent therapy dogs in a variety of settings, such as nursing homes, hospitals, and schools. In fact, many veterinarians actually recommend getting insurance for these dogs due to their propensity for certain health issues. Conclusion Blue French Bulldogs are beautiful, friendly, and very easy to love. These dogs are on the expensive side due to their rarity and can be prone to certain medical issues. In the game, Pappy Van Poodle served as a mentor to Rusty, giving him advice and objects to help him out. Pappy Van Poodle is also mentioned a few times by Rusty throughout the game, but never appears except under these specific circumstances. In one of his later scenes, Pappy finds one of Rusty's pups asleep in an alleyway, handing the pup to Rusty. Personality[ ] Pappy Van Poodle has been Rusty's mentor and friend for more than 90 dog years. He is mentioned to be the biggest fan and supporter of the 'Rusty's Sluggers' baseball team, and once threw out his back cheering. Rusty describes him as an unofficial team mascot. He runs the gardening store and serves as chairman of the shopping district. Discovery[ ] Pappy Van Poodle as seen in the Japanese version. Pappy Van Poodle was largely unknown online due to his purposely unlikely method needed to even encounter him in the game. Because of how unlikely a player is to encounter Pappy unintentionally, the term "Pappy van Poodle" had 0 search results on Google before Nick Robinson's video was uploaded. It was launched exclusively in North America in and was one of the earliest games Nintendo released prior to its mobile selection, to include paid downloadable content. The baseball mini-game compilation starred a down and out in-game shop keeper named Rusty Slugger, who sold each of the games to you. If you ever played the title, you'll know you could actually haggle the shop keeper to drive down the real-world prices of these games on the eShop. What if you didn't haggle him, though? Well, recently YouTuber Nick Robinson revisited the game and tried this himself. As difficult as it was to convince Rusty he wanted to buy his games for full price, he made it happen. Paying full price essentially results in a better story for Rusty and his struggling family and you also get to meet Pappy Van Poodle, an old overweight dog with a cane who is apparently a "neighbour, businessman and mentor" to Rusty. Paying full price unlocks six additional cut scenes featuring Pappy. What's so surprising is about this is that nobody actually appeared to know about Pappy Van Poodle. Until now, the character has never even been searched online Robinson ran the game through special software to find out more about this unknown character. His findings led to end game dialogue referencing Pappy. What's even weirder is that to see Pappy, you obviously had to avoid haggling and pay full price for each mini-game which very few players likely did. It meant barely anyone would have known who Rusty was referencing towards the end of the game when he spoke about his beloved and trusting mentor. Learn the full story in the video above and tell us if you knew about Pappy Van Poodle. Nick: Hey, nice to meet you! I'm Nick! Chris: Hi Nick! Chris: Yeah the real deal.Nick: Are you familiar with that? Chris: Yeah I played it. Nick: Oh awesome! Chris: It was.Nick: Yeah. Chris: And la.I remember playing da buncha minigames within that. And making a deal with Rusty! I-I made a YouTube video recently about this hidden character in the game? Um- Chris: Hmm. Nick: It's, it turns out that.Chris: Oh yeaah. Chris: He's like [unintelligible chuckling] "You're going making me lose my whole profit margins! You make me go below even breaking me even! You haggled the money down? Chris: Yeah, way down. Nick: Oh, got it! Um, I'm trying to track down who originally.Chris: Yeah not quite, sorry. Nick: It's okay! What are your like main memories of Rusty's Real Deal Baseball? Chris: The back and forth between me and the wabbit. Cuz Rusty was a wabbit. Nick: Right. Chris: I just like saying that. Nick: [chuckles] Wabbit. Chris: I'm gonna cash dat wabbit! Cuz that was a rabbit. I think Rusty was actually a dog. Chris: Oh. Okay, well my mistake. Chris: Oh yes, yes, yes. Nick: Got it. Um, thank you so much Christine it was a pleasure to meet you! Click to share on WhatsApp Opens in new window There have been some pretty lovable dogs in the Nintendo universe, mostly from the social simulation series Animal Crossing. You had K. Slider, the free-spirited, music-loving Jack Russell Terrier with a worldly outlook and a heart of gold. You also had Isabelle, the bubbly, hardworking Shih Tzu with a kind and altruistic nature. But how could we possibly forget about Pappy Van Poodle? Never heard of Pappy Van Poodle? What a tragedy. Throughout the Nintendo universe, there are plenty of hidden gems and Easter eggs to be found. However, most of these Easter eggs are well documented throughout Nintendo internet forums and fan pages. Since then, Nintendo fans are calling for Pappy Van Poodle to have a more prominent place in the Nintendo universe. This article will take a look at the mysterious figure of pappy Van Poodle and why the internet has fallen in love with him. Who Is Pappy Van Poodle? In order to purchase mini-games, players had to buy them from Rusty Slugger, the main character in the game. There was a catch, however. You could haggle with Rusty. Obviously, if you could pay significantly less money for mini-games, you would. In fact, if you even try to pay Rusty the full price, one of his children will appear on the screen and remind you that you can haggle him down. Of course, very few players had ever met Pappy Van Poodle before, considering that paying more money than you have to is a blatantly illogical decision. The two of them have apparently known each other for 20 human years. In another cutscene, Pappy describes himself as an unofficial team mascot and a father figure to Rusty. He even gives flowers to Rusty at one point to show how strong their bond is. The Japanese version of Pappy went by a different name, had a slightly different backstory, and is wearing a different outfit from his American counterpart. Could it be that Nintendo developers were tipping their hats to Pappy Van Winkle, the founder of the self-named Kentucky bourbon company? It seems pretty unlikely, but who knows? It seems that almost no one had ever encountered Pappy in the game, and anyone who had had never posted online about him. As a result, this extremely lovable character existed in complete obscurity for about 5 years. The video went into detail about every time Pappy was mentioned in the game, and how exactly players could meet Pappy for themselves. This gave Nick the ability to see what would happen if he paid Rusty the full price every time. As a result, he discovered Pappy and has since brought him back to the famed position he deserves. There have been rumors that others discovered Pappy before Nick; however, these rumors are largely unconfirmed. Ultimate gives players the option to purchase Challenger Packs, which allow them to import new characters into the game. A petition recently posted on Change. I think I would feel pretty bad for him. Perhaps Nintendo could make an adventure game centered entirely around Pappy? The idea that a character as lovable as Pappy Van Poodle could have been lost from our collective consciousness for 5 years is mind-boggling. And it begs the question: what other Nintendo Easter eggs might be hiding out there in their more obscure games? Could there be some hidden cat-like character just waiting to grace our Nintendo Switch screens? Share this:.
Joint disorders, a concern in German shepherd dogs, might be less likely to occur if spaying or neutering procedures are delayed until the dog is at least one year old, this study suggests. But as most handlers, breeders and veterinarians are aware, joint disorders are a big concern in these animals. A new study in the journal Veterinary Medicine and Science finds that neutering or spaying these dogs before 1 year of age triples the risk of one or more joint disorders — particularly for cranial cruciate ligament, or CCL, tears. In Europe, however, neutering is generally avoided by owners and trainers and not promoted by animal health authorities, Hart said. During the past decade, some studies have indicated that spaying or neutering can have several adverse health effects for certain dog breeds. For example, a study published in PLoS ONE and also led by Hart, examined the health records of over 1, golden retrievers and found a surprising fourfold increase in one or more joint disorders associated with spay or neuter before 1 year of age. In the same paper, joint disorders in Labrador retrievers were found to be increased by just twofold in dogs spayed or neutered in the first year. For this current study, researchers examined veterinary hospital records over a .The diseases were followed through 8 years of age, with the exception of mammary cancer in females, which was followed through 11 years. The dogs were classified as intact not neutered , neutered before 6 months, neutered between 6 to 11 months, or neutered between 12 to 23 months and 2 to 8 years. Joint disorders and cancers are of particular interest because neutering removes male and female sex hormones that play key roles in important body processes such as closure of bone growth plates. Seven percent of intact males were diagnosed with one or more joint disorders, compared to 21 percent of males neutered prior to a year of age. In intact females, 5 percent were diagnosed with one or more joint disorders, while in females neutered prior to 1 year of age this measure was significantly increased to 16 percent. Mammary cancer was diagnosed in 4 percent of intact females compared with less than 1 percent in females neutered before 1 year of age. The occurrence of the other cancers followed through 8 years of age was not higher in the neutered than in the intact dogs. Urinary incontinence, not diagnosed in intact females, was diagnosed in 7 percent of females neutered before 1 year of age. New pet owners have long been urged to spay and neuter their puppies. Researchers from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California in Davis recently studied the effects of neutering in German Shepherds, and their findings may help shape new evidence-based guidelines on the best time to neuter a puppy. The American Veterinary Medical Association supports pediatric spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, a time period which is typically after the animal is eight weeks old but before they reach six months of age. In their paper published in the journal Veterinary Medicine and Science, the University of California-Davis researchers outline their study on the veterinary hospital records of German Shepherd dogs. Advertisement Citing previous studies, including their own, the researchers note that neutering dogs within the first year of life is associated with a higher incidence of debilitating joint disorders such as hip dysplasia HD , cranial cruciate ligament tear or rupture CCL and elbow dysplasia ED. Looking at multiple breeds, neutered dogs are two to three times more likely than intact dogs to develop CCL. Looking at cancers such as osteosarcoma, mast cell tumors, hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma, the authors note previous studies of the Veterinary Medical Database that show that male and female neutered dogs are more likely than intact dogs to die of cancer. They also cite their own studies involving the Golden Retriever, where they found that neutering at all neuter periods through 8 years of age increased the rate of at least one of the cancers by three to four times. For this study, the researchers compiled data from 1, German Shepherds. Of the males, were neutered and were intact, and of the females, were neutered and intact. They compared the occurrence of joint disorders in intact dogs and in those neutered before six months of age , from six to 11 months, at one year, and at two to eight years. For some of their analyses, they grouped all dogs neutered before 12 months and referred to them as early neutered. In their findings, the researchers noted that 6. That fell to .Hip dysplasia was the most commonly experienced joint disorder. For intact females, joint disorders occurred in 5. The authors hypothesize that neutering stems the natural gonadal hormone secretions that regulate the growth of long-bone plates, so early gonadectomy may allow the bones to grow longer than normal and thus increase the risk of joint conditions. The rates of cancers in intact versus neutered dogs showed a much less significant change. For German Shepherds, it is the timing of the neuter that is important. For this breed just waiting until the dog is well over a year of age, such as 16 to 18 months, should be sufficient to avoid increased risks of joint disorders. Related Videos. Some people believe that spaying and neutering helps to avoid behavioral problems. The impact has been dramatic, with an estimated 85 percent of dogs in the U. Breeders have an important role in helping puppy buyers determine at what age to neuter or spay their dog. They may require puppy buyers to neuter or spay their dog to avoid indiscriminate breeding, thus their recommendation is key in helping owners decide when to spay or neuter their German Shepherd Dog. The study reported a significant increase in cranial cruciate ligament CCL tears, or ruptures, in male and female German Shepherd Dogs neutered before 1 year of age, and it also noted a significantly higher incidence of urinary incontinence in female German Shepherd Dogs spayed before 1 year of age. The research was based on the veterinary records of 1, intact and neutered German Shepherd Dogs in the medical database at the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The report examined joint disorders and cancers previously associated with neutering that occurred in dogs from Jan. The analysis involved a comparison of disease incidence in intact dogs with those neutered before 6 months of age, between 6 and 11 months of age, between 12 and 23 months of age, and from 24 months through 8 years of age. Mammary cancer in females was followed through 11 years of age. Lead investigator Benjamin L. One size does not fit all when it comes to deciding whether to neuter. Hart, a clinical animal behaviorist, researches the behavioral effects of neutering or spaying in animals. An ongoing study of the health effects associated with spay and neuter surgery will provide analyses of a total of 31 breeds for which data has been compiled. When the work is completed later this year, the information will be available on an open-access website as a resource for breeders, owners, veterinarians, and researchers. We knew we needed the research to be breed-specific rather than generalizing across breeds. Spaying female Goldens through 8 years of age increased the rate of at least one cancer by three to four times that of intact females. A German Shepherd Dog being campaigned at dog shows is not eligible for neutering or spaying because conformation involves judging dogs for their breeding potential. Dogs that compete in herding trials, obedience or rally, agility, tracking, and Schutzhund may be neutered or spayed, as these performance events are exempt from the breeding purpose that governs dog shows. However, owners may wish to avoid increasing the risk of a joint disorder such as hip dysplasia or CCL, as this could interfere with performance. People who buy German Shepherd Dogs for companions may want to neuter or spay their dog to help prevent unwanted litters, to avoid bitches coming into season, and to lessen aggression and roaming tendencies in males, though Dr. Hart says evidence shows that neutering males after 1 year is as effective in controlling aggression as neutering before 6 months of age. Neutering or spaying German Shepherd Dogs training for police or military work is optional. However, it is important that these dogs be healthy and fit to do their jobs, and neutering or spaying before 6 months of age could increase the risk of a debilitating joint disorder such as hip dysplasia or CCL. Among all German Shepherd Dogs studied, hip dysplasia, a frequent disease in the breed, is doubled in risk to 7 to 8 percent by early spaying or neutering. However, CCL occurs in less than 1 percent of intact dogs but is increased in risk to 8 to 12 percent with early spay-neuter surgeries, resulting in this disease being the main joint disorder impacted by early neutering in German Shepherd Dogs. A critical stabilizer of the stifle knee joint, the CCL functions as a rope as it stabilizes the femur thighbone to the tibia shinbone , preventing the stifle bone from shifting during activity. In intact male German Shepherd Dogs, 6. The main joint disorder reported was hip dysplasia, which results from a loose connection between the pelvis socket, or acetabulum, and the thighbone ball, or femur head, which creates laxity in the hip joint. Degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthritis, commonly accompany this disease, causing pain and disability. Male German Shepherd Dogs neutered before 6 months of age had an incidence rate of .In dogs neutered from 6 to 11 months of age, the incidence was .Although CCL rupture occurred in less than 1 percent of intact males, in dogs neutered before 6 months of age and from 6 to 11 months of age, the rate increased significantly to .Similarly, intact female German Shepherd Dogs showed an incidence rate of 5. In contrast, those spayed before 6 months of age had an incidence rate of .In those spayed between 6 to 11 months of age, the rate was almost 17 percent — three times higher than in intact females. CCL, which was diagnosed in less than 1 percent of intact females, occurred in 4. Because joint disorders can be related to body weight, the researchers also looked at whether the increased weight of neutered dogs could be responsible for CCL rupture, but they did not find a connection. Using a body condition score BCS based on a scale of 1 to 9, with 5 being ideal, they compared the body condition of neutered males with CCL ruptures to neutered males without CCL ruptures and found that the median BCS for both was 5. Hart explains. This condition is caused by growth disturbances in the elbow joint due to a misalignment of growth between the two bones in the foreleg between the radius elbow and ulna wrist. Hart says. It is mostly diagnosed in neutered large-breed dogs. As expected, the condition was not reported in intact female German Shepherd Dogs, yet 7 percent of females spayed before 1 year of age were incontinent in their elderly years. Fortunately, of the cancers followed in German Shepherd Dogs through age 8, there were few reports regardless whether a dog was intact or neutered. The research team cautioned that cancer rates could increase at later ages, though they did not study this. Mammary cancer was tracked through 11 years of age because this type of cancer characteristically occurs later in life. About 4 to 5 percent of intact females and those spayed from 2 through 8 years were diagnosed with mammary cancer in contrast to no cases diagnosed in females spayed before 6 months of age. Spaying has been attributed to helping to reduce the risk of mammary cancer, though a published study found neutering provided no apparent protection against mammary cancer. Hart notes that the protective factor could be breed specific. Regardless, in German Shepherd Dogs, the incidence of mammary cancer is fairly low. A Proactive Preventive Approach Given the results of this study showing the increased incidence of CCL rupture and urinary incontinence in German Shepherd Dogs that had early spay-neuter surgeries, breeders should consider the pros and cons before deciding the best age to recommend that puppy buyers spay or neuter their dogs. The purpose of a dog also should be considered in determining what is best for a companion dog, a working police dog, or a show or sporting competitor could be different. A German Shepherd Dog that is neutered or spayed before 1 year of age and has a CCL rupture could be out of commission for months for surgery and rehabilitation. Urinary incontinence is an inconvenient disorder for owners to deal with because it requires frequent cleaning of urine from floors and bedding. It also is attributed to dogs being relinquished to shelters. The most important finding in German Shepherd Dogs is that there is no advantage of neutering or spaying before 12 months of age.

boxer puppies minnesota - Shampoo color enhancing if the coat is dull or yellowing Creme Rinse or conditioner Several clean, soft bath towels Young puppies and toy Poodles often do best in the kitchen sink. Prepare this as you would the bathtub by having it clean and having all your supplies within reach. Before you begin the bath, use cotton to gently plug your Poodle's ears so that water cannot enter the ear canal. If your Poodle has any type of chronic ear troubles, you can put a bit of Vaseline on the cotton to make double sure that water does not enter. For show dogs - All topknot, ear wrappers and bands must be removed. While it is not mandatory, if you show, you may find it helpful to part the long mane down the center of the back with a pin brush, letting the long hair fall to ether side. Phase 3 - Shampooing Most owners know this, but it is so important that it must be mentioned: Never use human shampoo. It is vital that the shampoo be Ph balanced for canines, it is essential for healthy skin and coat. All shampoos are either acid, alkali or neutral. The degree of acidity or alkalinity is measured on a Ph scale that runs from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Anything between 0 and 7 is "acid" and anything between 7 and 14 is "alkaline" You need to use an alkaline based shampoo on a Poodle. Coats can become stained, colors can become uneven. For this reason, some owners may wish to use color enhancing canine shampoo , which does not contain any dyes but rather intensifies the natural color of the Poodle's coat. For white and light colored Poodles, this will help to remove yellow or grayish discolorations. For black or brown Poodles, it will help to remove any red or orange tipping and make the coat more solid. There are 2 methods for shampooing a Poodle, the most common being to stand the dog in the tub and then use warm water with the spray hose or container to wet the coat thoroughly, avoiding wetting the head or ears. It is very important that the coat be extremely wet, to the roots, before you apply the shampoo. If you are using a hand held spray, hold the nozzle as close as possible to the dog's body, this will force the water to the skin and flush out any dirt. For show dogs, the Poodle should be shampooed and rinsed 2 times. If you are keeping your Poodle in oil treatments, 3 cycles may be necessary. Please do refer to the AllPoodleInfo Book for full chapters on bathing both pet and show Poodles correctly. Phase 4 - Rinsing When rinsing, it is very important to be sure all traces of shampoo are removed. The final rinse should begin at the head, with the eyes covered and ear flaps held down by your hand. If any shampoo remains it can cause the coat to look dull, cause irritation that can result in scratching and it will be more difficult to do an scissoring. Phase 5 - Applying Conditioner or Cream Rinse Shampooing does a great job of cleaning, but unfortunately can cause tangles at the same time. Conditioner is an important step in bathing a Poodle. The shampoo does little to protect the hairs. The conditioner or creme rinse will moisturize the hair and skin, smooth the cuticle, restructure the hair shaft, restore elasticity and add depth of color. Excess moisture should be squeezed from the Poodle's coat 1st and then the rinse or conditioner applied by gently working it into the the coat with your fingertips. Plastic container: Rinsing is much easier when you have a container to scoop up a little bit of water at a time. Instead, you want to use a shampoo with a Ph level of 7 to .I recently wrote this article on the best shampoos for poodles. You should be able to find the conditioner near the shampoo at any pet store. Rubber mat optional : If you want to make your cleanup extra easy, you can use a rubber mat to set your poodle down when they get out of the bath instead of another towel. A basin of water will do just fine and may make it easier to keep your poodle calm. Brushing him over something will help speed up the cleanup process later. You want to do your best to brush out any snags or tangles in his hair so that his coat maintains positive hygiene and so that you can get a more thorough clean. Ready the Bath for Your Poodle Begin filling your basin with warm water lukewarm is recommended because poodles can get cold pretty quickly. Get Your Poodle in the Bath Gently place your poodle into the water and use a sponge to spread water all over its coat while avoiding places around its eyes, ears, and mouth. By getting it wet with the sponge, you can ease it into the water. Properly Shampoo Your Poodle Stand your poodle up in the basin and rub your alkaline dog shampoo over their coat. Make sure that you get the entire body. You really need to make sure that you get all of the shampoo off of them, or you could end up drying out their coat and their skin. If his hair is still excessively wet, you should dry your poodle some more and then carefully apply the conditioner all over his body. Dry Your Poodle Thoroughly Remember that even if your poodle is an adult, he can get cold easily. Then gently dry him off with another towel until his coat is only slightly damp. If you bathe a poodle too often, he can develop problems with dry skin. So how often exactly should you be bathing your poodle? Generally, poodles should be bathed once every three weeks. This gives enough time for a poodle to secrete the correct amount of oils to keep the skin moisturized, Occasionally, skin conditions can develop that require lotions or salves to dry the skin. A poodle puppy should be bathed after 3 months of age or when all vaccines have been administered. Bathing your puppy during the weaning process is unnecessary as poodle mothers clean their puppies up until they are fully weaned. Bathing your poodle puppy before three months of age is not advised because: 1. Mother will clean them: Bathing your poodle puppy before three months of age can be a bad idea because the mother will clean them if your puppy is still being weaned. Giving your dog an extra bath will likely dry out the skin and cause problems later. Bathing can Interfere with vaccinations: Bathing your poodle can affect the way they interact with vaccinations. It is Easier to dry out their skin: Poodle puppies can be fragile little things. Puppies can get too cold: Poodles, in general, get cold relatively easily. When they are really small, they are more vulnerable. When poodles are young, their hair is short and wavy, making them less prone to mats and tangles. Ways to clean a poodle puppy when under three months of age include: 1. Just gently wipe away the grime in the specific areas that have built up. Dry bathing products: Most pet stores carry dry bathing products for puppies and dogs that are averse to water. You can use dry foam to clean your puppy if he gets really messy. Baby Wipes: If your dog just has a little mud on the paws from going out, you can use baby wipes to clean them. Just pick up their paws one at a time and wipe them down. Do Poodles Like Baths? Most poodles love to take baths. Poodles were originally bred to be water retrievers and typically enjoy being in the water. Poodles secrete natural oils that make their coats moisture-resistant and prevents the skin from drying out. Poodles are actually known for being really strong swimmers. Before they became the fashion stars we know and love today, poodles were originally bred to be water retrievers. Meaning people would get them specifically for their skills in the water. While the vast majority of poodles enjoy being in the water, there are always outliers who, for whatever reason, do not. If this sounds like your poodle, just remember to remain consistent and try to give him a bath on the same day, at the same time, every three weeks. Some after bathing hygiene tips for your poodle include: 1. If your dog currently has a lot of tangles and snags in its coat, you should use a bristle brush to comb them out. Using Steel Scissors for Mats If your poodle has particularly bad mats or tangles you can use steel scissors to carefully cut them out. Just remember this is a last resort. You really want to keep their coat as intact as possible. This is why regular bathing, brushing, and grooming is so important. Fortunately, you have a few options depending on what your dog takes to. First, you can try brushing their teeth once a day. Make sure you never use human toothpaste but instead use dog toothpaste from your local pet store. Some dogs hate having their teeth brushed. If this is your dog, you can try using a dental spray or dental treats. Balancing your Poodles hygiene is really important because it can help them avoid issues like tangles and snags in their coats and prevent them from developing dry skin. Too much bathing, and they get dry skin. Too little, and their coat gets tangled. Therefore, when you bathe your poodle is just as important as how. When you actually do give them the bath, make sure you use warm water and rinse all the shampoo out so that there is none leftover to dry out their skin. Then apply some conditioner, and you should be all set! If you keep up a consistent bathing schedule, your poodle should remain happy and healthy! I hope you found it helpful.
