During the first nights at your home, your new Frenchie should absolutely not be expected to hold their bladder all night. When your new dog initially comes home with you, make night-time bathroom breaks easier by having your dog sleep in a room with you, or you can relocate to sleep near it to make sure you can keep an eye on when it needs to be taken out. It may be a good idea to do this for several nights to see how long your dog can sleep before needing a bathroom break. Take them to their potty-training pads or outside If your bulldog is exhibiting any of these signs, then you should immediately assume that going to the bathroom is their top priority and get them to the potty pads or outside. Firstly, they are scented, but secondly you can use them as the area for them to relieve themselves on. You can buy pet training puppy pads on Amazon. Decent dog leash It almost goes without saying but will obviously need a leash so that you can walk the dog to the proper toilet location if going into an unsecured outdoor area. Dog treats for rewards You will also need treats to positively reinforce your puppy for going to the bathroom when you tell them to. Toys will also help to positively reinforce your puppy into thinking that they are doing good with their potty training. In the crate we placed the training pads in one half, with his bed to sleep on in the other half. We bought a larger crate view which crate we recommend that we needed for his size at the time, as knew we would need it still on certain occasions as he grew older. I would also recommend you equip yourself with cleaning rags and an enzymatic cleaner to rid your house of the unpleasant aroma. Further tips on potty training including the psychology! The puppy may learn to hold their defecation in for a longer period of time so they can squeeze some more outdoors time with you. Claude is now successfully trained to go to the toilet outside. If you are not home with your puppy at points during the potty-training phase, it would be a good idea to make sure your French bulldog is put into a restricted area, but also making sure that they are comfortable and have enough room to move around freely. Like previously mentioned, French bulldogs are a mostly clean breed that will avoid going to the bathroom in certain areas, such as where they sleep every night. If you find that your new Frenchie has had an accident inside the house, make sure you clean the area fiercely and thoroughly to get the smell out. If the dog continues to smell that smell, they might think it is okay to go in that same spot in the future. If you find that your Frenchie has unleashed one of his loads inside your house, you should gather the poop up in a small bag and deposit it in the part of the yard that you want your dog to go in. Their nose will become accustomed to the smell in that particular area and they will have an instinct to go to the bathroom in that spot of the yard. To make sure your French bulldog knows which areas are acceptable for going to the bathroom and which ones are not, be sure to take your puppy to the same area for a significant length of time. Once your bulldog learns that said area is acceptable for going to the bathroom, you can move on to a different area. Your bulldog will learn to remember which areas area acceptable bathroom spots and which ones they should steer clear from. This can actually make them more nervous, and lead to even more mess. Not only will these behaviours scare your dog and ruin their relationship with you, but they will also hinder the potty-training process and they could be aggressive towards you. You should also avoid using any cleaners that come with a scent of ammonia. Urine contains high acidic amount of ammonia. If your puppy smells this, they will most likely use this area in the house as a spot for going to the bathroom. How long to potty train a French bulldog? This is where I want to set you some realistic expectation. Whilst we started training Claude to go outside to the toilet from day 1, it took us 6 months until he stopped having accidents inside. Yes, he was stilling using the training mats regularly indoors, but to be honest, I think we should have just avoided using those altogether, and just focussed on his outdoor routine. It took us around 6 months to potty train Claude the Frenchie puppy. So, if you have ever wondered how long it should take to potty train a French bulldog puppy, all I can do is give you our personal experience. It took him 6 months so up to his 9-month birthday before he was fully trained. Are French bulldog easy to potty train? Are French Bulldogs hard to potty train? It can be hard and will take time. However with perseverance and commitment you will be able to fully toilet train your Frenchie. Our personal experience of toilet training I remember taking Claude to puppy socialisation training at 8 months old, and him peeing on the floor in front of all the other puppies. I was like an embarrassed parent! And this was despite the fact all the other puppy breeds were the same age as him. He got there in the end though! How long can a French bulldog hold its pee? How long a Frenchie can hold its pee and bladder will very much depend on their age. For example, a fully-grown French Bulldog can hold its pee for around 8 to 10 hours. French Bulldog puppies can hold their pee for a maximum of 4 hours. They will be peeing a lot in your house until completely toilet trained. My French Bulldog is still not toilet trained This is a common problem by owners of adult French Bulldogs who are not toilet trained. If you cannot get your adult Frenchie to hold their pee and stop peeing indoors and have exhausted all of the advice in this guide, I would recommend you seek the support of a pet behaviour specialist. Conclusion If you and your Frenchie pup have a strong enough level of respect and trust, this can go a long way, and the process will be loads quicker and easier than you ever even imagined. French Bulldog potty training can be achieved by reinforcing good behaviour and setting up routines and rewards you can minimize the amount of accidents that are going to happen on your brand-new rug. Because French Bulldogs are so people oriented and want so much to please, we have found that they are fairly easy to train. They can be a little stubborn, but so can just about every other breed. If you make training into games for your Frenchie, he or she will want to play all the time. From an intelligence standpoint, French Bulldogs do quite well compared with the non-sporting breeds and they are the most intelligent among the bulldog breeds. According to the charts, they are about mid-range on the list which includes all breeds. The bottom line is that these are quite intelligent little dogs who want to please, so if you do your part with your Frenchie, he or she will respond and learn well. This includes house training. One thing we have learned is that the bigger the dog, the easier it is to house train them. Little dogs make little messes, about which we may not get all that excited. French Bulldogs fall in the middle. They are not a big dog, but they are not a tiny dog breed either, so their messes are something to be avoided. Fortunately, Frenchie puppies and generally Frenchie adults are quite easy to potty train. Based on our experiences, we do not think it is absolutely necessary to attend obedience school with your Frenchie, unless you intend on entering him or her into competitions, although it can make training quicker and more effective. Fortunately, there are lots of self help books and pamphlets available which will work just fine, so long as you take the time to work with your new bundle of joy. We had to take turns on deck. It did not bother me like some of the others. They were afraid the German U-Boats would torpedo us when they were below deck. I pointed out it wouldn't make any difference so why let it bother me! We came into Edinburgh, Scotland and took the trains to Tavistock, England, about 3 miles outside Plymouth, at the th Station Hospital. There was a British airbase nearby and the Germans were bombing them all the time. The British had big barrage balloons that were deployed to keep the planes from flying low. They lived and worked in Quonset huts. The Allies had captured many Germans, 25, in one group, so many of our first patients were Germans. The medical staff complained about treating them but our Colonel was very definite that we were medical personnel and that we would treat all persons equally! We received about a dozen from a submarine that the British sunk and had picked up the crew. A call went out for volunteer medical personnel that could speak German and Joe volunteered. From then on he worked with Army Intelligence, talking to the German prisoners. There were so many German prisoners, including Doctors, that they were given their own hospital. I observed surgical procedures and they were very good surgeons. They were very far ahead of our surgeons, already pinning broken bones. Of course, they had practiced on the prisoners from Dachau! I was there after we took it. At Dachau they had a courtyard with the kennels around it. They would chain prisoners to poles in the middle of the courtyard - to a pole - and turn the war dogs on them until they were gone. The GIs killed all of these dogs when they liberated the camp. The Germans had taken over registries in the s and had conscripted many of the working breed dogs as war dogs. Some of these dogs were returned to the owners but most were killed in action or were too old to show or breed by the time they were returned. Some of the German breeders had taken their best stock to the mountains and hid them. The soldiers with dogs were stationed at the German officer's barracks where they had a beautiful stable full of excellent horses. The US Officers took many of the horses home with them too. This lovely brindle bitch was the daughter of Reichsieger Ajax v. Holderburg and had been bred to three time Reichsieger Karlo v. Joe acquired the eight week old, Bella v. Steingarten from this breeding. He named her "Boxi". Larry had brought Karlo with him from Germany when he was 7 years old. He finished Karlo in three shows. She and Larry were close friends and Karlo lived with Audrey until his death at .Joe established his kennel with his brother, Frank, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Joe wanted to establish an AKC registered kennel name and his sister, Hermine, came up with the name of "Boxella". Since she was a Boxer, and her name was Bella, why not make it Boxella? He was an active and supporting member of the Claremont County KC. He also belonged to the German Boxer Club. Joe's philosophy of breeding has been to keep the outstanding bitches and breed them to outstanding sires. Heine continued to follow and import Boxers in Europe, importing several in an effort to improve head and bites in the US. He has judged world-wide in 15 countries. All of the puppies are healthy, affectionate and very active; they grew up naturally, drinking milk just from their mother - they did not receive formula milk or any other supplement.
