Bulldogs Dietary Needs A bulldog will eat just about anything you give it. Bulldogs love food and will be more than willing to eat any leftovers or under the table scraps. They can be goofy and playful. It is up to the owner to build this up or not. By taking time to play with your bulldog, indoors or outdoors, this will translate in a more active pet. Your bulldog can have all the fun in the world within established boundaries! Bulldogs Overheat Easily Bulldogs thick bodies and wrinkles can overheat easily. A good rule of thumb is to be weary of taking your bulldog outside if the weather exceeds 80 degrees. Taking your bulldog outside in anything hotter than this for prolonged activity can be extremely dangerous. In place of heading outdoors during the hottest time of the day plan to go for a walk early morning or later in the evening when temperatures have cooled. If there is a massive heat wave take additional time to play indoors at home or seek a pet friendly, air-conditioned facility. Good examples are Home Depot or Lowes. These retailers welcome the DIY or homebuilders pets, regardless if they are a service animal. And no this is not a paid advertisement. I Just happen to frequent both locations often and know their rules. Bulldogs are Not Lazy, Just Intelligent and Purposeful Another factor of that contradicts the thought question of bulldogs being lazy deals with the intelligence of a bulldog. Bulldogs are actually quite smart and purposeful in their thinking. Their energy may be spent quickly which is why Bulldogs seek reason for the decisions that are made. Bulldogs want to wisely choose how their energy is spent. These lovable fur animals are just as excited to do something fun when given reason and will go all in when that purpose is made clear. Bulldogs can be bullheaded when they are not properly convinced though. They are strong willed and stubborn. If a bulldog decides not to do something, that is final until you convince them otherwise. For this reason alone it is important to provide guidance early on in their adolescence and the right type of structure. A structured lifestyle helps these intelligent animals to understand the reasoning behind the set expectations and planned activities. This understanding translates to an increased willingness to participate in activities because these behaviors have been trained through the early stages of their lives. This routine will support a more active and fun filled lifestyle for your bulldog. There will always be obstacles that can hold a bulldog back or influence a lazy environment. Do not hesitate in doing this. Help your pup while it is still young. Do not delay in providing formal training. The older your bulldog, the more stubborn it will become in learning new things. With any bulldog, some recommendations on what to train first are: Potty training. English Bulldogs are often thought to be lazy because they are so easy going. On the AKC energy scale of couch potato to high energy, English Bulldogs typically fall in the middle of the scale. You see, these dogs love to play and are quite social, but can tire quickly. It only takes about 15 minutes of activity before they want to rest up before their next play session. Thankfully, their energy levels complement their temperament. These descriptors would lead you to believe that they are lazy dogs. However, other descriptions of their personality include: fun loving, energetic, playful, and social. English Bulldogs are also known to be stubborn. This is in part because Bulldogs are incredibly intelligent dogs. They are very smart and know how to get what they want. Thankfully they are easy to train because they are highly motivated by food. Some Bulldogs have even been trained how to skateboard and surf. How can that be lazy? Well, part of the myth that English Bulldogs are lazy may be due in part to the fact that Bulldogs have low levels of endurance. The way these dogs were bred has created a number of health problems that lead to fatigue at a quicker rate when compared to other dogs of a similar size. There are many common health problems that can lead an English Bulldog to get tired quickly. Another characteristic of the English Bulldog breed is its short nose. Believe it or not, this feature can have an effect on its activity level, too. Brachycephalic Breeds and Heat Sensitivity Dogs with large heads and short snouts are called brachycephalic breeds. Dogs that belong to a brachycephalic breed are at a higher risk of having respiratory problems. In some cases there are dogs who benefit from surgery to correct brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS. If they start panting heavily they need to be calmed down and take some time to rest. If you live in a warmer climate or the weather is abnormally warmer than usual, your Bulldog may appear to be lazier than normal; however, you should keep an eye out to make sure they are not overheating. Overheating can be life threatening to an English Bulldog and brachycephalic breeds are more prone to overheat on walks. The reason they are so sensitive to heat is because they are unable to cool themselves off as easily and effectively as non-brachycephalic dogs. If you believe that your English Bulldog is overheating you should help them cool down and get some rest before resuming any activities. This does not mean the dog is being lazy, it means they need to cool down and calm down. Joint Problems Unfortunately, English Bulldogs are predisposed to a variety of joint problems. They may experience one or a combination of the following joint problems: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, or arthritis. If a dog is experiencing any one or more of these joint problems they may be lounging around not because they are lazy, but because they are trying to avoid painful movements. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Hip or elbow dysplasia is the deterioration of the joint over time that causes the loss of joint function. If a dog has been diagnosed with dysplasia in their hip or elbow, then moving around at higher levels of enthusiasm could cause them to be in pain. Thankfully there are a few options that owners have to help a dog resume their normal activities and avoid any lazy tendencies. The more overweight a Bulldog is, the more they will want to lounge around and avoid activities that cause them to be physically active. To help an overweight or obese Bulldog, veterinarians generally suggest a combination diet and increased activity to promote weight loss. Reasons why a dog might have sudden onset laziness include infection, illness, or internal blockage, just to name a few. If you believe that your dog is exhibiting laziness that is not in relation to being recently active and is also out of character, seeking help from a veterinarian is suggested. A veterinarian will be able to examine the dog and suggest potential tests to run to ensure the dog is not in any danger. You might be surprised at how many hours of sleep an English Bulldog has to have. The amount of rest that each English Bulldog needs can vary from dog to dog. Generally speaking, the average English Bulldog needs anywhere from 12 to 14 hours of sleep per day. That much sleep can make anyone think a dog is lazy and other breeds, like Great Danes, can have the same problem. Like most dogs, English Bulldogs will typically break their hours of sleep up into several short naps and one long stretch of sleep overnight. When English Bulldogs are more active, they will need more rest, too. This helps them to be sure that they will not overheat and do not overexert themselves. Just like active dogs, English Bulldogs get the zoomies and run off excess energy, too. One quick internet search may leave you confused on just how much exercise an English Bulldog truly needs each day. This means that they should exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. Getting in a full 30 minutes may be too much at one time for an English Bulldog. Many dog trainers suggest that English Bulldogs start out with short training and exercise intervals. This allows the dog to rest between sessions and stay safe at the same time. English Bulldogs should not exercise when it is hot outside. The increase in activity level combined with the heat can cause serious health problems. If you suspect that your dog has been active for too long it is important to calm them down. How to Prevent Bulldog Laziness There is no reason to believe that your English Bulldog has to be a couch potato for its entire life. Simply teach your Bulldog not to be lazy. You can do this by creating a routing, training them, feeding them a proper diet, and ensuring they stay hydrated. Create a Routine While English Bulldogs do not require a highly structured routine, they will benefit from some sort of reliable schedule. One way to help prevent laziness is to create a routine that your Bulldog expects. Some things that you may want to do the same every day are: Feeding your dog at the same time Playing the same indoor game Having one place to sleep at nighttime Keeping toys in the same place Following a potty routine When your dog knows what they should expect at a given time they are more likely to be active around that time. However, it is important to note that some breeders we do occasionally will do infusion litters with one of the parent breeds ie the Lab or Cocker Spaniel. These infusion litters may produce some puppies that are low to moderate shedding depending on their genetics. Australian Labradoodles can come in very wide variety of colors and patterns! Below are some examples of the colors and different patterns that we produce. Please note that not all colors and patterns are included! One of the unique features of Australian Labradoodles is the wide variety of coat colors and patterns. While Labradoodle colours are interesting, we maintain that you are buying a living creature and not a coat colour. It is essential to retain the appearance of an Australian Labradoodle within the breed standard, but we feel charging for colour is not a fair practice. Depending on the intensity of the pigment, a red dog may appear to be a deep red color all the way to a light brown color. Cream Cream labradoodles range from almost white through to latte depending on the intensity of the pigment. This is our Bruno Mars who is a light cream color with black leathers. Tan points for the phantom pattern are pips above the eyes, along the side of the jaw, a band across the chest, run halfway up all four legs, on the vent and sometimes on the underside of the tail. Phantoms may be either black Labradoodles or Chocolate Labradoodles. Dexter is a chocolate phantom Labradoodle. Tri A tri colored Labradoodle is a phantom plus white. A tri Labradoodle may be black or chocolate. This is Tawnee who is a black tri. Sable A sable Labradoodle has each single hair in their coat banded by color. Each strand of hair has two colors. The tip of the strand will be either black or brown and the color at the root may be red, tan or apricot. Because the top inch or so of the strands of hair are either black or chocolate, at birth a sable Labradoodle will appear to be a black or chocolate dog. Once the strands start to grow out, the change color becomes visible. The amount of time it takes to see the second color varies from birth through to about six weeks of age. Since Labradoodles do not shed, at least as little as any dog is capable of not shedding, they do not generally grow new strands of hair. Once a sable Labradoodle has been groomed, the dark chocolate or black tips are lost and the dog then becomes red or tan in color. This is Ripple our chocolate sable parti girl. Their range of coat color can vary between light yellow to almost red in hue. The difference in a caramel dog and a chalk, cream, apricot and red dog is their nose color. Chocolate True chocolates are brown in color. Many chocolates do fade over time. Cream This color comes in a wide variety of shades but it should be creamy in appearance. The nose pigment is black. The pigment for the nose is black. Parchment This color is a creamy beige chocolate color. It has been described as a cup of coffee with a generous addition of milk. These dogs are born milk chocolate and will develop their parchment coloring over time. The nose pigment is rose. Red True reds should be rich and dark in color and the roots should be no lighter. Sadly, this coat color tends to fade over time. The nose color is to be black. This color develops over the first years. Nose pigment should be rose. Chalk This color is a white looking color. However, if you were to compare it to a true white, it would appear to be more chalk-white in color. Nose pigment is black. Black Black Labradoodles should be solid in color with no sprinklings of other colors throughout the coat. Their pigment color should be black. Silver These pups would start out black and their silver coloring develops over the first few years of their lives. The color range can be anywhere from a light pewter to a dark charcoal. Silver dogs need to have black pigmentation. The blue coat will develop over the first few years. The color should be solid once they are full grown. It should be a dark-medium smoky blue. Lavender This color has a smoky lavender chocolate coloring that almost gives off a pink to lilac appearance. These pups are born chocolate and will come into their beautiful lavender coats over the first few years. Their pigmentation should be rose in color. Parti These dogs need to be at least fifty percent white, with spots or patches of any other above solid color. Full or partial saddles are acceptable, but are not preferred. Ticking in the white of the coat is acceptable but not preferred. The nose pigment needs to match the solid color. Any combination of acceptable colors is allowed. Nose pigment should follow requirements listed above based on the solid base color. So, like a good Boy Scout, when you purchase a chocolate Labradoodle, be prepared for anything! All are lovely, but they are almost impossible to predict with any significant degree of accuracy. Once again, be prepared for anything! Chocolate Colors Now we get to the fun part; the color combinations! This is where things get interesting. Partis can come in any color, with either color nose. Some are mostly white, while some have lots of color and less white. The ones that are mostly white are called "Extreme" Partis. The variations are endless and unique, like a snowflake. The colors, such as chocolate, on a parti can change in the same ways that they would on a solid dog. Often confused with "Parti" is a dog with heavy white mismarks or a Tuxedo. White mismarks can be very small or very heavy, or anywhere in-between. The puppy is born either Black or Chocolate and immediately begins to lose the dark color, revealing anything from a cream to a red underneath!
