We have answers. What are Golden Retriever puppies for sale near Evansville like? A Golden Retriever is a large, strong breed of dog that is one of the most popular breeds worldwide. Originally bred as a type of gundog to assist with hunting and retrieving game, these dogs are distinguished by their golden-colored double coats, well-defined wavy layers of hair, and gentle, loyal personalities. Golden Retrievers are known for being incredibly intelligent, highly trainable, and incredibly loving—making them an ideal pet for families of all sizes. Are Golden Retriever puppies for sale in Evansville hypoallergenic? Golden Retrievers are not considered a hypoallergenic breed, meaning that they can trigger allergies in those with allergies and asthma. While not hypoallergenic, Golden Retrievers can still make a great choice for allergy sufferers if their environment and health are managed properly. Regular baths, good grooming, and brushing a Golden Retriever's coat can help reduce the proteins that trigger allergies. Additionally, regular vacuuming of the home can aid in reducing the allergens that can linger in fabric and furniture. Do Evansville Golden Retriever puppies for sale have special dietary needs? Golden Retrievers can have some specific dietary requirements depending on age, activity level, and size. Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers need a nutrient-dense diet that includes proteins and fats to help support their active lifestyle, and a variety of vitamins and minerals to maintain their good health. They may need more protein and fat than other breeds, and can benefit from supplements or special food for their joints. When adding treats and snacks to their diet, make sure to choose items with high-quality ingredients. Do Golden Retriever puppies in Evansville have any kind of special requirements? Golden Retrievers generally require lots of love and attention from their owners. They need regular exercise and mental stimulation to help keep them healthy and happy. Grooming is also important to keep their beautiful coats in good condition. In terms of medical care, they should see their veterinarian annually for checkups and vaccinations in order to prevent any health issues. As with all breeds of dogs, they should be provided with plenty of quality food and clean, fresh water. Golden Retrievers may also require a bit more brushing and trimming to keep their coat looking great, as compared to some other breeds. Are Golden Retrievers for sale in Evansville considered big dogs? Golden Retrievers are of medium size, with adult males usually standing between inches tall and weighing around pounds. Despite this, they may appear larger due to their thick, luxurious coats. By comparison, larger breeds such as Mastiffs and Great Danes can reach heights of 35 inches and weigh around pounds. While Golden Retrievers are considered medium-sized dogs, they have a larger-than-average presence, and make a great guard and working dog. Do Golden Retriever puppies near Evansville like to swim? Yes, Golden Retrievers love to swim! It has been said that this breed was developed to work on water, and as such, they can often be seen splashing around in pools, lakes, and ponds. Golden Retrievers are powerful swimmers, and if properly supervised, are capable of great distances in the water. Not only do they enjoy swimming, but they do so with enthusiasm! They also love to retrieve things that have been thrown in the water, making a game of it. Swimming is an essential element of a Golden Retriever's lifestyle. Are Golden Retrievers in Evansville good with kids? Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular family dog breeds because of their intelligence, loyalty, and affectionate nature. They are highly sociable and enjoy interacting with both children and adults alike. They are known to be very patient and gentle with young children, which makes them a perfect companion for kids. Golden Retrievers are also great at learning commands and quickly gain an understanding of what's expected from them. They bond easily and deeply with their humans; these traits make them the perfect choice for families, making them one of the best breed of dogs for kids. How many minutes per day do I need to train Evansville Golden Retrievers for sale? The amount of time needed to train a Golden Retriever will depend on several factors, such as the age, character, and size of your pup. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you spend 15 to 20 minutes per day training your Golden Retriever, though you may need to spend more time if they are more stubborn or learning something new. Listed below are answers to the most common questions I receive as you are preparing to take your puppy home: 1. What is my puppy eating? We are feeding your puppy PawTree. They have a multitude of other flavors you can try out after your puppy comes home too. You can buy this food by clicking the PawTree picture at the bottom of any page on our website. You can find out more information at www. We also encourage you to set your order to their EZship so you never run out. They also offer personalized food by filling out a pet profile so we encourage all families to head over to fill out their pet profile for personalized food plan as well as personalized bags of dog food when they arrive. How many times per day should my puppy be fed? We feed puppies, weeks old 3 x per day. We try to keep them on a schedule such as: a. Once the puppy reaches 12 weeks, we cut them back to eating 2 x per day, eliminating the noon feeding. Increase the amount you feed based on the recommendations you will find on the dog food bag as suggested by weight of the puppy. We do not recommend free feeding — give your puppy about 20 minutes to eat, then pick it up and put it away. Water should be provided at all times, except during the night. Wet the food for about 30 minutes prior to giving it to the puppy so it softens to aid in digestion. However, if you see loose stools it is almost assuredly overfeeding so back it off until the stool is firm and then slowly add back in. When can I start training my puppy? We like to see training start as soon as you pick up your puppy from my home, or your puppy arrives via car or airplane. We recommend transporting your puppy home in a crate that is lined with a bath towel. Feeding time is a fantastic opportunity to train as you can spend a few minutes several times per day with teaching the basic commands of sit, stay and come. We provide a helpful training booklet with detailed information on training on our Puppy Tips page. What size crate should I buy for my puppy? Most puppies that will mature to a medium size will need a large crate once they have reached maturity. Plastic crates are an option as well. If you have any questions please ask us. What type of collar and leash do I need and what size is best for my puppy? We like to buy the less expensive, adjustable-type of collars and a nylon leash. We do not care for the expandable leashes that allow the puppy to walk way out in front or way off to the side of you. The smallest setting for the collar would be about 8 inches and expanding out from there. We use small carabiners to attach the stretched chain between the collar and the leash. This will prevent your puppy from chewing your new leash. If you are reserving a small size pup then I would suggest an XS collar. Another option while they are very young is a slip leash style. Some families like to train in harnesses. This is also a tool you can use. Sizes will vary from company to company, but most go off of weight. Ask us the estimated weight of your future puppy at the time they will go home so you will have a rough idea of what to purchase. It is never a bad idea to weight to buy until you can size your puppy in person though as each harness will fit differently. You can play the radio softly if your puppy is in a different room from you as this is how they were raised with us. You have to find a system that works for you. Do you have recommendations for where to stay when we pick up our puppy? We are located only 20 mins from Lebanon, Oregon. There are numerous hotel options in Albany, Springfield, or Eugene that you can explore. Dog owners often get bombarded with endless choices as well as countless adverts from the dog food companies, who all claim that theirs is the best. When it comes to dog food, the simple answer is no one food is best for all dogs. But the question is: which diet is the best for your Labradoodle? Luckily, there are many different options when it comes to dog food. The most popular manufactured foods include a complete diet dry , with or without a biscuit mixer and semi-moist. Some dog foods contain only natural ingredients. Then there is the option of feeding your dog a home-made diet. Some owners swear by a raw diet while others feed their Labradoodles vegetarian food. Within the manufactured options, there are many different qualities of food. Usually, you get what you pay for. Expensive ones are more likely to provide better nutrition for your doodle in terms of minerals, nutrients, and high-quality meat, whereas the cheap ones will most likely contain a lot of grain. Dried food also called kibble in the USA tend to be less expensive than other dog foods. They have improved a lot over the last few years, and some of the more expensive ones are now an excellent choice for a healthy, complete diet. Dried foods also contain the least fat and the most preservatives. Often semi-moist foods contain a lot of sugar and artificial substances, which is why some dogs seem to love them. Choosing the right food for your Labradoodle is very important. The diet influences his health, coat, and even temperament. It can have an effect on his health, coat , skin, energy levels, and temperament. There are several different types of food that you can feed your labradoodle — dry, semi-moist, canned, frozen, or freeze-dried are just some of the options. You can also feed him a home-made or raw diet. Many owners of labradoodle with allergies or skin conditions are now considering this option. Dry Dog Food for Labradoodles Dry food is a popular choice for Labradoodles, especially for large dogs who get through a lot of food. It is also less expensive than other dog foods. It is worth paying for a high-quality dry food as cheaper ones may contain a lot of cereal. It also means that you have to feed larger quantities to ensure your dog gets sufficient nutrients. Canned Dog Food for Labradoodles Canned food is another popular choice. Dogs also love them. They love the taste, and it generally comes in a variety of flavors. Canned food is often great mixed with dry kibble. If your labradoodle has lost interest in food and on a dry food diet, then you can add a small amount of canned food. Canned food tends to be more expensive than dried food. Many owners do not like the mess that it makes. If you store a part-opened tin in the fridge, then it can have an overpowering smell when you open the fridge door. Semi-Moist Dog Food for Labradoodles These are the commercial dog foods shaped like pork chops, salamis, burgers, or other meaty foods. They are the least nutritional of all dog foods. They are full of sugars, artificial flavorings, and coloring. You may give your doodle one as an occasional treat, but they do not provide the nutrition that your labradoodle needs. Freeze-Dried Dog Food for Labradoodles The frozen food manufacturers often make this for dog owners who like the convenience of it. You can store them for six months to a year. They do it to make sure that their pets are getting the right nutrition they need. Feeding your doodle a home-cooked diet can be time consuming and expensive. The tricky part is sticking to it once you have started with the best intentions. Raw food for Labradoodles If your doodle is not doing well on commercially prepared dog food then you might need to consider a raw diet. There is evidence that they are becoming increasingly popular among the Labradoodle owners. Raw food diets emulate the way dogs ate before the existence of commercial dog foods. After all, dry, canned, or other styles of cooked food for dogs were mainly created as a means of convenience. However, raw diets are not without controversy. Supporters of the raw food diet argue that a carefully planned raw diet gives the dog numerous health benefits, including a healthier coat, more energy, cleaner teeth, and get rid of bad breath and doggy odor. But the critics say that the risks of nutritional imbalance, intestinal problems, and food-borne illness caused by handling and feeding raw meat outweigh any benefits. Scientifically, the jury is still out. This is one of the most frequent questions that all the Labradoodle owners ask. But there is no easy answer. The correct amount of food for your labradoodle depends on several factors such as: Breed. The difficult part is deciding which one will have the greatest positive impact on their well-being. The following are some of the top options for dog foods for your Labradoodle: Dry Food: Due to its affordability and accessibility, dry dog food is a preferred option for Labradoodles. The nutrients in high-quality dry food are appropriate for a different life stage of your Labradoodle. Dry food has the greatest shelf life when compared to other types of dog foods. Wet Food: Wet food or canned food is another option for owners. Labradoodles enjoy the variety of flavors in canned food that come in interesting shapes like other meaty foods. Owners may combine wet food with dried food because wet food alone is typically more expensive than dry food. While it can be costly, doing so guarantees that their pups receive high-quality food. If you only give the same food to your Labradoodles, they could develop picky eating habits. Hence, it makes sense to follow the advice of the majority of veterinarians to combine kibble and wet food with a ratio of 20 to .Make sure the food you choose is sustainable and highly recommended by experts. Ensure that it will suit your needs, those of your dog, your financial situation, and your way of life. The average price of a Labradoodle is already costly. Hence, it is important to choose the kind of diet that will also suit your budget. Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Labradoodle Dog owners must be aware of the foods that can be harmful, poisonous, or trigger an allergic reaction in their Labradoodles. The following is a list of some harmful or poisonous foods that you must never give your pet Labradoodle: Alcohol: There is no enzyme that can digest alcohol in Labradoodles. Hypoglycemia , metabolic acidosis , respiratory difficulties, or central nervous system CNS impairment could result from ingestion. Avocado: Avocados contain the fungicidal toxin persin , which has been linked to the death of many dog breeds, including Labradoodles. It can cause vomiting, loose stool, and heart damage when taken in large doses. Chocolate: The major alkaloid in cocoa and chocolates, theobromine , cannot be broken down by an enzyme found in the stomachs of Labradoodles. As a result, even small quantities of chocolate can cause toxicity. Additionally, they could become uncontrollable, have convulsions, throw up, and have diarrhea. Grapes and raisins: As a result of the tartaric acid found in grapes and raisins, Labradoodles experience diarrhea , vomiting, dehydration , and kidney failure. Unfortunately, even one full grape can cause fatal injuries and irreversible harm to Labradoodles. Onion, garlic, leeks, and chives: All of these vegetables contain N-propyl disulfide , which robs red blood cells of their ability to carry oxygen. Consuming these veggies over time may cause hemolytic anemia. It is frequently present in toothpaste, gum, candies, and syrups. Listed below are foods that may seem harmless but are actually hazardous for Labradoodles: Cooked bones: Cooked bones are prone to shatter into shards. They can hurt your Labradoodle as well as obstruct its mouth, throat, and stomach. High-sugar foods: Your Labradoodle is more likely to develop health issues, including diabetes, obesity, and teeth damage, if it consumes too much sugar from other dog foods. Avoid cheap dog food, which usually contains too much salt. Consuming too much salt can result in seizures, renal failure, diarrhea, and vomiting. If ignored, this results in gastrointestinal blockage and death. Bring your Labradoodle to the nearest veterinary clinic immediately if you think they have accidentally ingested any of the aforementioned foods. A smart technique to make sure that their nutritional demands are being satisfied is to switch to a new food. If you want to gradually introduce a new food to your Labradoodle pup, make sure to introduce it in little amounts every day. The timeline provided below will help you introduce a new food to your Labradoodle: Days. As they grow you will move from four meals per day at 8 weeks old, to just one or two in adulthood. And you will want to use as much of their daily kibble as you can in training. Helping to strengthen the bond between you, as well as to teaching them which behaviors you want to see in your home. Feeding a Labradoodle Puppy When it comes to feeding your new Labradoodle puppy there are plenty of options to choose between and a number of things to consider. Puppies grow up fast. The first thing to keep in mind is that puppies have different dietary needs to adult dogs. Getting too much of some nutrients, and not enough of others can lead to developmental problems. Growing pups digest food and absorb nutrients differently than adult dogs too. Their gastrointestinal system also works much faster than that of an adult dog. Puppy Nutrient Requirements Puppies need more calories than adult dogs, relative to their size. In fact, they need about twice as many calories in relation to their body weight compared to that of a full grown Labradoodle. Compared to mature dogs, puppies also need: more protein to support growing muscle more fat to fuel growth and a different mineral balance to aid in the rapid development of their bones. For example, one study showed that puppies fed a low phosphorus diet suffer from impaired appetite and growth, diminished skin and fur quality, and a disturbed musculoskeletal system. Too much calcium can also negatively affect bone development, by accelerating it. This is a serious joint condition that leads to painful arthritis and lameness. The smaller and younger your puppy is, the more often they need to eat, since their stomachs are too small for big portions. Labradoodle puppies that are 4 months or younger should have their food split into 4 meals a day. When they reach 4 and 6 months old this can be reduced to 3 meals. Knowing how much to feed your Labradoodle puppy can be tricky. So the feeding charts on the packaging are a good place to start. This basic pet calorie calculator can help determine how many calories a puppy needs. Overfeeding Labradoodle Puppies Canine obesity is a big problem for many dogs and the Labradoodle is no exception. Some Labrador Retrievers are known to have a genetic mutation that causes them to have an insatiable appetite. But there are plenty of genetically normal dogs who will always want more food. If your puppy is constantly hungry you can try giving him smaller, more frequent meals. In fact, for training purposes we recommend using as much of each of the meals rations as you can as training treats between meals. These days there are a lot of brands vying for space in the dog food market. So deciding what to feed your Labradoodle puppy might be the most difficult question of them all. Puppies that are 8 to 12 weeks old should continue eating the same food they were eating at the breeders. If you want to change their food, wait until they are fully settled at home. Then transition gradually to a different diet to avoid causing an upset tummy. You can do it over the course of a week, like this: Feed 1 part new food to 3 parts old food on the first two days. Equal parts old food and new food on days three and four. And three parts new food to one part old food for two more days after that. Feeding a Labradoodle Puppy Dry Food Most puppy parents choose one of the many commercial dry puppy foods available. There are many reasons why these diets also known as kibbles are so popular. They are.

Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Tom Thorpe Blog Did you let out your dog to play only for it to go home with a limping front leg? A Golden Retriever limping front leg indicates a potential injury, health problem, and even congenital defects. Golden Retrievers are very energetic canines. Below, I discussed the possible reasons for the limping and what you should do. Gradual vs. With sudden limping, the problem occurred without previous underlying causes. On the other hand, gradual onset limping is brought by an underlying illness. The limping developed slowly, which is far more concerning than sudden limping. Nevertheless, both of these conditions require immediate treatment. This is to save your Goldie from suffering and to prevent the condition from worsening. Why is my Golden Retriever limping on its front leg? Injury and trauma Imagine your Golden Retriever as a child. If you let them out unsupervised, they can get bruised knees, a broken bone, and all sorts of possible injuries. Injury and trauma is the most common reason why Golden Retrievers will limp on their front legs. Your dog probably zoomed too fast and pulled a muscle on its front leg. Also, your Goldie can fall off elevated surfaces, which can cause trauma on its forelimbs. Aside from that, paw injuries due to sharp objects can occur. Lastly, you should rule out insect bites. My Golden Retriever is notorious for pawing bees, which always give him swollen paws and a limp that goes on for days. Elbow dysplasia Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia can also affect Golden Retrievers. This time the affected legs are in front. This will cause limping, lameness, and other progressive symptoms. This can lead to various abnormalities on the affected joint, making it difficult or almost impossible to fix entirely. Moreover, elbow dysplasia is observed to be the most common cause of forelimb limping and lameness in young dogs. But unlike typical limping, Goldies with this condition will have a paddling gait as the dog tries to compensate for the lameness. Elbow dysplasia is easy to diagnose if the Golden Retriever puppy underwent rigorous testing. This is standard among legitimate breeders. By that time, the condition has worsened and can be expensive to manage. Panosteitis Panosteitis is a condition among young pups, specifically those that belong in the large and giant breeds. It can occur on one of the forelimbs or both. While rare, this condition can also affect the hind legs. Golden Retriever puppies with panosteitis will exhibit lameness, depression, unexplained weight loss, fever, and poor appetite. If not corrected early, panosteitis will lead to muscle atrophy on the affected legs. The good news is that this condition is self-limiting, which means it will resolve on its own most of the time. Generally, Golden Retriever puppies with panosteitis will outgrow the condition once they turn a year old. Still, some dogs will require corrective treatments and medications to assist with walking. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy HOD On a more serious note, a limping Golden Retriever might be suffering from a condition called hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is commonly observed in large breeds. According to experts, Golden Retrievers are about 5. Like panosteitis, Goldies with hypertrophic osteodystrophy will suffer from bone inflammation. The difference is that hypertrophic osteodystrophy affects the flared regions of the long bones metaphyses. On the other hand, panosteitis occurs on the bone shafts diaphyses. Moreover, HOD is a self-limiting condition that will usually go away on its own. Treatment for this condition is mostly centered on managing the pain. Overall, the medication for HOD will only last for a few weeks. But if your Golden Retriever still suffers from bone inflammation at an older age, there might be another underlying condition involved. Cranial cruciate ligament CCL tear Another condition Golden Retrievers may experience is the cranial cruciate ligament. This is quite a common knee injury among canines, which can affect both the front and rear legs. CCL tear causes sudden limping as the shin bone slides forward. Surgical correction is often necessary to prevent irreversible injuries and further joint damages. Almost all cases of CCL tear are due to overexertion. It can occur when your Golden Retriever runs too fast or jumps from an elevated surface. In general, the ligament tears because your dog planted its limbs on the ground even as the body is still in the forward movement momentum. The longer you put off treatment for your dog, the worse the condition gets. From limping, it will develop into full-on lameness, inflammation, and muscle atrophy. This condition occurs when the kneecap gets dislocated. As with CCL tears, the most common reason behind the luxation is injury or trauma. Dogs with this condition will bunny hop and limp on the affected leg. It can also affect both the front and back legs, depending on which limb received the trauma. Toy and small breeds like Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, and Chihuahuas are at high risk of experiencing patellar luxation. Many cases of patellar luxation require surgical correction, especially if it occurs frequently. The veterinarian can also place implants to prevent the kneecap from luxating in the future. Arthritis Almost any dog can suffer from osteoarthritis later in life. If your senior Golden Retriever is limping its front leg, you should get it checked for arthritis. Moreover, arthritis occurs due to the deterioration of the joint cartilage. As the cartilage thins, the bones rub together, which forms bone spurs. These spurs will cause extreme pain and discomfort to the affected dog. As a progressive disease, the treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs is focused on managing the pain. Veterinarians can also prescribe medications and supplements to slow down cartilage degeneration. The vet will first rule out potential causes like luxation, dysplasia, trauma, arthritis, and so on. What should I do when my dog is limping? If you noticed that your Golden Retriever is limping, the first thing to do is check the affected leg. Look for obvious wounds, injuries, or dislocation. You should also bring your dog inside and observe its behavior. If the limping front leg becomes swollen, inflamed, or warm, you should bring it to the vet right away. You should do the same if you notice that your dog is licking the affected leg too much. This habit can cause bald spots on the leg and even increase the risk of infections. Human-grade pain relievers are no-nos for canines, regardless of breed. What can I give my dog for limping? To manage acute pain on the affected leg, you can put on an ice pack on it. Reduce physical activity. Putting the canine on a crate will help. You should also keep them on ground level and avoid forcing the canine to climb the stairs or the car. Control the bleeding. If your Goldie sustained open wounds, you should wash and bandage them right away. This will control the bleeding while you head to the vet. Carry the dog. When transporting a limping dog, you should carry it around. This is to prevent further stress on the affected forelimbs. Your dog probably stepped on sharp objects or very hot pavement. A: Minor injuries may cause your dog to limp but not substantial enough to trigger excruciating pain. Some Golden Retrievers are tolerant than others, so they may appear fine even if they are experiencing pain. Q: Should I take my Golden Retriever to the vet if he is limping? However, the longer you put off treatment, the longer your dog will suffer. Q: How long will a dog limp with a sprained leg? A: A Golden Retriever with a sprained leg will limp for 24 to 48 hours. Q: Can I give ibuprofen to my Golden Retriever for limping? A: You should never give human-grade ibuprofen to your dog. This medication has a very narrow margin of safety for canines. It can cause more harm than help if you decide to self-administer. Veterinarians have treated many cases of ibuprofen-induced conditions like intestinal inflammation and internal bleeding in dogs. Final words A Golden Retriever limping front leg should always be considered a serious condition. This way, you can prevent it from running too fast or getting exposed to various hazards. Treatment : This disease is self-limiting and it will randomly resolve, during this, treatment is supportive and can make a difference. Your vet will recommend using anti-inflammatory drugs and pain medication. Prevention : Feed your puppies with the adult dog food as it contains lower levels of protein and calcium while also giving them more energy. Rapidly growing puppies need higher levels of energy to meet their growth needs. If you want to keep them on puppy food, you will need to give them more of it. But the better option is to feed an affected dog a high-quality diet that has been specifically made for use in large breed puppies, to keep the dog in healthy body weight. If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle, check out my recommended dog foods for golden retrievers at every age here. Bone disease: Cause: This disease affects large breed puppies too, and it makes walking really hard for them. It could also develop into other conditions such as osteosarcoma which is a type of cancer and hypertrophic osteodystrophy which makes walking very painful. Treatment: This condition requires taking your dog to the vet. The vet is the only one that can help your dog in this case. Prevention: You can prevent it by giving your dog vitamins supplements that contain glucosamine and chondroitin helps preventing further bone diseases and joint damage. Glucosamine helps in repairing body tissues such as cartilage and it also helps in reducing the pain. I do recommend checking with your doctor for the right dosage. Hip Dysplasia: Cause: This condition appears at a young age. And it only affects the rear legs. Weight reduction to take stress off of the hips. Joint supplements. Exercise restriction especially on hard surfaces. Anti-inflammatory medications. Prevention: avoid exercising young and at-risk dogs and providing essential nutrient supplements and avoid neutering at risk puppies and last but not least ensuring the skeletal system grows properly, and follow the appropriate diet for your dog. When should I take them to the vet? If you notice any of the following signs, and especially if your dog displays more than one of those, it is highly recommended to grab the phone and make an appointment at your vet as soon as possible. Obvious break. Inability to put weight on the affected leg. Dangling limp. Other symptoms appear with the limping. Related questions What should I do if my dog is limping? What are the signs of my dog being in pain? Increased breathing rate. Limping in dogs is quite common and occurs when your dog cannot walk normally due to weakness or pain. Your dog may walk slowly or with difficulty and will usually favor one leg. There are two types of limps that Golden Retrievers have: The gradual limp and the sudden limp. The gradual limp can be noticed increasing across a long period, while the sudden limp is often seen immediately after an injury or accident. Such foreign bodies can cause lacerations. Burns caused by scorching sidewalks or frostbite can also cause your Golden Retriever to limp. Get your dog some booties or paw protectors in extremely hot or cold temperatures. Overexertion Too much of a good thing, such as fetch, intense running, or rough play with other dogs, can leave your Golden Retriever sore and hobbling with a muscle strain. However, most dogs will recover quickly after a couple of rest days. Injuries To Toenails Examine your Golden Retriever for ingrowing or overgrown toenails, as these can cause discomfort and pain when they dig into the skin. My dog once suffered a dewclaw injury, so make sure you also keep these trim. Insect Sting or Animal Bite Your dog might be limping because his paw has been stung. Aside from insect bites, animal bites can also cause a limp. Early detection is vital because bites can lead to infections. Sprain A stretched muscle or torn ligament can result in a sprain. Almost any active dog can sprain his leg because activities as simple as jumping can lead to awkward landings. If your Golden Retriever sprains his foot, he will hesitate to put weight on it for a while. Fracture A broken leg should be suspected if the limping occurred suddenly. Broken bones may not always be visible. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Dysplasia is a common hereditary condition causing hip and elbow joints to become loose and move out of position. Although the disease is progressive and irreversible, around three-quarters of Golden Retrievers with hip dysplasia can live a comfortable life with ongoing management, such as exercise modification and anti-inflammatory and painkilling medication. Osteoarthritis Older and larger dogs are more at risk of this chronic painful disease. It results in joint inflammation caused by cartilage deterioration. Signs include lameness, stiffness, or difficulty in getting up. My dog Willow has osteoarthritis of her lower spine. Her initial symptoms were lameness of the rear leg and difficulty getting up. However, it is managed pretty well along with her hip dysplasia with prescribed medication, and exercise adjustments. My vet recommended these, they get good reviews online, and they seem to be working for her. She has the Big Barker , which is the only dog bed clinically proven to reduce pain and joint stiffness. You can read my comprehensive review here. It is one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs. Many small breeds are prone. However, many larger breeds, including the Golden Retriever, are now affected. Cruciate Ligament Injury or Disease A cruciate ligament injury damages the ligaments that hold the knee together. It is similar to a sprain but is more serious. If the ligaments weaken due to a disease, the limp is gradual. If they are torn because of a sudden twist or jump, the limp is sudden. Degenerative Myelopathy Older dogs are at risk of this inherited neurologic disorder that affects the spinal cord causing a gradual paralysis of the back end. Symptoms are weakness, lameness in the hind legs, difficulty rising, loss of muscle in the rear legs, and incontinence. This can make it harder for him to walk straight and he may develop a limp. If you notice inflammation and find your dog licking or chewing the site, he may need a course of antibiotics. Use a pet cone to prevent further chewing and consequent worsening of the infection. Lyme Disease This bacterial illness transmitted by certain ticks can cause intermittent lameness. Panosteitis Growing Pains This condition affects the long bones of the legs due to painful inflammation. Panosteitis in dogs tends to affect growing large breed pups aged months, including the Golden Retriever. A shifting lameness from one bone to another is caused and can occur over several weeks or months. Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy HOD This is a bone disease occurring in fast-growing large dogs, usually between 3 and 5 months old. Similar to panosteitis, signs will be a slight limp and pain in the affected bone. The shoulder is most commonly affected, but it can also appear in the elbow, hip, and knee. It occurs when large puppies grow too quickly. Limping, lameness, and pain are symptoms. Golden Retrievers are predisposed to Osteochondritis Dissecans , but the genes involved have not been identified by scientists. Hind limb weakness, paralysis, or urinary incontinence are symptoms of this spinal disease. The signs vary depending on the severity of the spinal cord damage and which disc along the spine is impacted. Diabetic Neuropathy If diabetes is untreated, excessive glucose can cause progressive weakness or paralysis due to nerve damage. However, this condition is rare in dogs. Immune Mediated Polyarthritis This immune system disorder causes inflamed, swollen, and painful joints. Your dog will be reluctant to walk — or he will hobble on one or more legs due to the pain. Congenital Limb Deformities Abnormally developed limbs can cause limping in your dog. Osteosarcoma Bone Cancer Bone cancer is more common in canines than in any other species. Bone tumors can rapidly grow, causing limping and pain, particularly in leg bones. Limping can vary from mild to severe. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Make sure to check out my favorite dog gear below. German Shepherd When To Visit The Vet You do not have to see a vet every time you notice your dog is starting to limp however, there are times your dog must see a veterinarian at an animal hospital to get a comprehensive examination. If any of the following situations apply to your dog call your vet or go to the nearest open emergency veterinary clinic for assistance. Limbs that feel hot to the touch Any moderate to severe swelling A broken limb will be at an irregular angle A dangling limb this indicates dislocation Limping in combination with a fever How Can I Help My Limping Dog? When you first see your dog limping immediately get them to rest the best way you can to minimize their movement and prevent them from injuring themselves more. Also, press pause on your dog's exercise routines until they have fully healed, and keep them on a leash when taking them outside for potty breaks to stop them from running away. Check your pup's paw for anything signaling an injury such as cuts. Contact your vet as soon as you can if you discover something painful. If you think your dog is limping because of inflammation, alternate between ice and heat packs to lower the level of swelling and discomfort. Call your veterinarian to ask them when you should be applying the packs. Look at the site of the limp for signs of bleeding, to help determine if the condition is from a bite, injury, or puncture. It is recommended that you should take your dog to the vet to be safe and give both you and your dog a peaceful mind in knowing what is causing your dog's limp, even if you think it is not serious. If your dog starts to whimper or yelp and the limp doesn't get better by itself call your veterinarian immediately or go to the nearest emergency vet. Your vet has the training and knowledge to diagnose what is causing your dog's pain and the severity of the injury. An exam to determine the source may include X-rays, blood work, or tick testing. The veterinarian will also take your pup's age, breed, history, and overall health into consideration when diagnosing your dog and creating a treatment plan. Note: The advice provided in this post is intended for informational purposes and does not constitute medical advice regarding pets. Our Lafayette veterinarians are available to help dogs in need. There are many reasons why your Golden Retriever may develop a limp. Common causes for going lame are foot, nail, leg injuries, underlying chronic or genetic conditions, Hip or Elbow Dysplasia, and illness. If your Golden is unable to distribute its weight evenly on all four legs, it means that they are experiencing some degree of pain, and you must identify the source of the problem. HOD Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy This bone disease affects young puppies, typically first appearing when the dog is around months old. Larger breed dogs are more likely to be affected. Limping is accompanied by swelling, pain on touching the affected limbs, loss of appetite, and depression. Symptoms are managed with pain relief and supportive care, but steroids and IV fluids may be required in more severe cases. Injury Sprain Or Strain If your gregarious Golden suddenly develops a limp out of the blue, the likelihood is that they have overexerted themselves while exercising, causing a strain or a sprain, according to Fetch by Web MD. Strains harm the tendons connecting muscle to the bone, while sprains harm the ligaments that connect bones. These are common injuries for active dogs and may put your Golden Retriever out of action for a day or two. Foot and Nail Injuries Other injuries include lacerations to the paw pad, ripped or broken nails. Both injuries will cause your dog to avoid putting its weight on the injured site. You can bathe sore paws in warm water and Epsom salts. Apply antiseptic and bandage any wounds. These can get lodged in their paws and cause pain, making your Golden Retriever limp. When you see your dog develop a sudden limp, the first thing to do is to check its paws and remove any foreign objects. Ensure any salt is washed from their paws when you come back from your walk in the winter. Your vet may be able to recommend a topical cream to soothe cracked paw pads. Lameness will come on suddenly and can affect different limbs at different times. Your vet will help you manage pano with pain relief and anti-inflammatories. It will spontaneously resolve itself by the time your dog reaches its second birthday. Ligament Injury If your Golden Retriever goes lame in the back legs, it may have torn or ruptured its crucial cranial ligament. A torn CCL is more often seen in medium to large active dogs. Depending on the severity of the injury, your Golden Retriever may require surgery to fix the problem. Cancer Lameness may be the symptom of some bone cancers. Broken Leg If your Golden Retriever is in an accident and sustains an injury or trauma, they may have broken bones. This is an emergency, and you should take your dog directly to the vet. Hip And Elbow Dysplasia Elbow and hip dysplasia are more common in larger dogs. This causes the ball and socket hip joint to be malformed, creating mobility, pain, and lameness problems. You might notice your dog has an abnormal gait, stiffness getting up, and pain around the hip area. Elbow dysplasia affects the forelimbs in the same way. Your vet will be able to give you a diagnosis, and the condition is usually managed through maintaining healthy body weight, physiotherapy, and medication such as pain relief and anti-inflammatories. Osteoarthritis This chronic condition will gradually come on, and in addition to a limp, other signs may be stiffness, difficulty getting up, weight gain, and irritability. Your vet will probably provide a joint supplement to help with this. When You Should Call A Vet About Your Limping Golden Retriever In mild cases like an insect bite, foreign object, minor injury, or even a mild strain or sprain, some simple first aid and supporting your dog to rest can be enough to ensure they bounce back in a day or two. If the dog is in obvious pain in emergencies such as acute injuries, your vet is the first person to call. For limps with no apparent cause, it is also best to contact your vet because it could result from an underlying or chronic disease. Prevention is always better than dealing with an injured doggie. A healthy dog is much less prone to injury or chronic disease. Give your dog a healthy balanced diet as obesity can lead to joint problems. A well trained Golden Retriever who is responsive to your commands is also much more likely to avoid injury. Remember, your dog should get regular exercise. Manage their fitness levels with a consistent daily routine so that they can run, play and hike with you safely for longer. It depends on the context: the age of your Golden Retriever and what happened before the limp. For example, a very young pup from 2 months old may have developed pano or HOD if there was no inciting event. Injury to the leg or paws will cause a sudden limp, as will stuck foreign objects. Identifying the reason for the limp and dealing with it promptly is important. Acute conditions require rest until the limp heals. In chronic conditions such as hip dysplasia, your vet will advise you on how best to modify their exercise routine. Perhaps not significant pain, but there is an issue there, and you need to find out what it is. Conclusion Golden Retrievers limp for all kinds of reasons. It is always worth getting to the bottom of the issue as it is not normal for your Golden Retriever to go lame. The best course of action is to check limbs, paws, and toenails for any injury or issue. Some of the reasons why your Golden Retriever is limping are more serious than others but the sooner you deal with the problem, the sooner you and your best pal will be able to enjoy life to the full together again. These small dogs are easily identifiable thanks to their big smiles, large bat ears and heavy wrinkles. Dubbed Frenchies, these small dogs have proven popular with dog lovers in some of the biggest cities in the world. The French Bulldog can make a wonderful canine companion thanks to their affectionate, charming and loyal personalities. The AKC lists the following for temperament in the Frenchie breed standard. Well behaved, adaptable, and comfortable companions with an affectionate nature and even disposition; generally active, alert, and playful, but not unduly boisterous. Frenchies tend to be minimal barkers, although this can vary from French Bulldog to French Bulldog. These small dogs are quick to pick up training, learn new commands and new tricks. The AKC recommend taking your Frenchie puppy to socialization and puppy training at the earliest possible opportunity. Couch potatoes You may have seen some memes on the internet likening French Bulldogs to a loaf of bread or a potato. They really are couch potatoes! Wag Walking recommend around 30 minutes of activity a day for the breed. French Bulldogs will need some daily exercise to provide mental and physical stimulation as well as to help your Frenchie keep off weight. The AKC write on their website: A short walk or outdoor play session with their owner each day should provide enough exercise to keep the French Bulldog in shape. Good with children The AKC shine a light on their excellent reputation in a family setting with children. The organization give the Frenchie breed a five-star rating for their ability to be around younger members of the family. Having said that, you should never leave your French Bulldog alone and unsupervised with a child just like with any dog breed. Easy to groom Unlike some of the Doodle hybrids, the French Bulldog breed are relatively low maintenance where grooming is concerned. The AKC suggest a weekly brush to get rid of dead hair and debris. Wag Walking had a word of warning for Frenchie owners living in apartments. If you and your dog are apartment dwellers, outdoor diversions are still a must; a quick visit to the local dog run will go a long way. Unfortunately these charming canines are prone to a host of issues. The French Bulldog Club of America suggest health testing for hip dysplasia, eye examination, patellar laxation, congenital cardiac disease, autoimmune thyroiditis and juvenile cataracts. They can be extremely sensitive to anesthesia. The AKC add that skin allergies and autoimmune skin disorder a pose a problem. Sensitive tummies French Bulldogs can suffer from sensitive stomachs for a variety of difference reasons. Some Frenchies can have a genetic predisposition to food allergies which can cause an upset tummy. You may want to consider a dog allergy test too. The AKC had a stark warning for Frenchie owners where diet is concerned. If you choose to give your dog treats, do so in moderation. Give table scraps sparingly, if at all, especially avoiding cooked bones and foods high in fat. Separation anxiety As a popular companion dog breed, some French Bulldogs can be prone to separation anxiety. However, it must be said that Frenchies are no more susceptible to this chronic canine condition than any other dog irrespective of breed or mix. Separation anxiety occurs when a dog owners is about to leave the home or has left the home. Some of the symptoms include barking, howling, chewing, digging or even defecating inside the home. Price French Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. High maintenance These diminutive little dogs can be high maintenance and stubborn. They can be the classic velcro dog, acting as your shadow throughout the day. French Bulldogs may need help getting on and off furniture, require supervision when exercising considering their breathing problems and can be fussy at mealtime. Temperature French Bulldogs can be extremely sensitive to temperature. They should never be allowed to partake in strenuous exercise during hot or humid weather given their breathing difficulties. Pros of Owning A French Bulldog The French Bulldog sports bat-like ears , wide eyes, and a short, stocky stature that makes pet owners fall in love with their overall cuteness. However, Frenchies have more to offer potential pet owners than just their looks. From their overall temperament to their adaptability, these dogs have many pros that pet owners will enjoy. These loving dogs are usually well-behaved around other animals and visitors, often looking for an open lap to cuddle on. These dogs have an even balance between lounging around and enjoying playful interaction with their family members. Low Maintenance Grooming Unlike many breeds, the Frenchie features a short, silky coat that requires minimal grooming to keep their coat healthy. A quick brush helps remove loose hair and distribute natural oils evenly across the coat, maintaining its natural shine. Since they have a shorter coat, Frenchies tend to shed less than breeds with longer hair and brushing them regularly helps decrease the amount of hair shed. They prefer to snuggle with their owner or relax on the couch, making a brisk walk once or twice a day sufficient enough to keep them healthy. You can also play a game of fetch a couple of times per week for exercise as Frenchies love to chase balls and play with toys. Cons of Owning A French Bulldog Aside from the long list of positive attributes a French Bulldog offers, they do have some disadvantages that could turn potential pet owners away. Health Complications One of the biggest downfalls to owning a French Bulldog revolves around their health. Like other flat-faced breeds, their short snout makes them prone to breathing issues and unable to cool themselves down during hot or humid temperatures. In addition, Frenchies are known to suffer from several eye conditions including cherry eye, entropion, and juvenile cataracts and auto-immune disorders. Some Frenchies develop skin allergies , while others develop food allergies that require them to need a special, more expensive brand of dog food. Drooling Many different breeds of dog have a tendency to drool, the Frenchie is no exception. Having a short snout and flat-face makes it hard for them to cool down, the drooling seen in Frenchies is their way of lowering their body temperature when they overheat. Plus, Frenchies have fat, loose lips that make them prone to drooling and slopping water on the floor after getting a drink. However, you should also consider the cost of purchasing food, vaccinations, grooming supplies, and the cost of veterinary care if your Frenchie suffers from any type of health condition. This can make it hard to teach them basic commands, potty training , or leash training. Pet owners will need to use patience and persistence to properly train their dog or seek help from a professional trainer. Should You Get a French Bulldog? However, with proper care and some prevention measures, the pros of owning such an adoring breed outweigh the cons. Alert Athletic If you want a companion to join you on your adventures, you will love having a Frenchie. They Have Minimal Grooming Requirements Many dogs need a lot of grooming, from clipping to brushing and bathing. However, Frenchies are low maintenance. If you bathe your dog once a week, it will be good to go. If you want to cut down on shedding, you can brush your Frenchie every week after you bathe it. You should also make sure that you trim its nails as needed. That is all you need to do to keep your Frenchie looking great. They Do Well in Different Housing Situations Some dogs need a house with a yard because they have a lot of energy and need to spend a lot of time outdoors. Frenchies can live anywhere. This makes them great apartment dogs. A small apartment has enough space for them because they will want to hang out with you. Of course, how well they are trained will depend on the effort you make, but once you get started, they catch on quickly. Part of the reason is that they are loving companions, and they take pride in making you happy. They Are Great with Senior Citizens If you are a senior or you have one living in your home, Frenchies are great pets. They are gentle and require less exercise than larger breeds. Frenchies are a good size for seniors. They love to go for walks, but they are easy to train. They love to cuddle while you read a book, and they are easy to take care of. They Are Laid Back Some people want a dog that can go places with them. They want to be able to take a dog on trips, hiking, or out to dinner in the city. Frenchies are laid back, and as long as they are with you, they are happy and comfortable. Some dogs get nervous outside of their surroundings. They might feel insecure, and they can get defensive and bark. Frenchies are happy and confident, and they are adaptable. You can take your Frenchie out anywhere with you. They Help You Meet New People Frenchies are such happy and adorable dogs that they always attract attention from other people when you are out in public. If you take your Frenchie to a park, you will be sure to meet people who want to say hi to your dog. They have wonderful ways of interacting with you on a daily basis. They will make adorable faces, bring you toys, and zip around the room when they are feeling energetic. If you want to smile every day, this is a great breed to bring home. French Bulldog Cons It is important to understand the cons of owning a Frenchie so that you know what you are getting into. No matter what type of dog you bring home, you need to have the time, energy, and financial resources to give them the best possible care. They Can Chew Your Things Most puppies are known for chewing anything they can get in their mouths when they are teething, and Frenchies are no exception. You will want to provide safe chew toys that your Frenchie can chew and spend time training it not to chew. Make sure that your shoes and other belongings are not accessible, and have the toys available when your dog is teething. They Snore a Lot Frenchies have a short snout, and they are a brachycephalic breed. This is true of any dog breed with a smushed face. They have narrow nostrils, and it is difficult for air to flow freely when they breathe. Nearly every French Bulldog will snort and snore. They do it both when they are asleep and when they are awake. Exercise can also make them snort loudly. However, be prepared for a noisy dog that snores at night. If you live near water or have a pool, you should consider this. You will want to have a lifejacket. They can grow depressed when they are lonely, and they simply need social interaction. You should think twice about getting this kind of dog if you are away from home most of the day. You should have a consistent schedule from the beginning. Make sure that you have regular times scheduled so that your Frenchie knows when to expect to go out. Learn how to recognize signs that your Frenchie needs to go out. If you notice your dog pacing around the room, whining, barking, standing and staring at you, or standing near the door, this could be a sign that your dog needs to go outside. Make sure that you have a reward system to reinforce that they did a great thing by going potty outside. They Can Drool Some dogs drool more than others, and Frenchies fall into this category. They will drool after drinking their water, or they can drool after they exercise. Be prepared for drooling if you choose this breed. They Shed Frenchies are not hypoallergenic, and they can shed quite a bit. You can reduce this by bathing and brushing your dog every week, but they will still shed some hair. If you have allergies, you need to have a plan in place to minimize the shedding. They Can Be Victims of Irresponsible Breeding As is the case with many popular dog breeds, Frenchies can be the victims of irresponsible breeding. Good breeders have their dogs tested to make sure that they do not breed dogs with genetic problems. However, irresponsible breeders breed anything to make money. You need to pay attention to potential health issues that come from irresponsible breeding. You should be aware of common health problems that they can develop. This way, you will be able to look for signs of these problems and get your dog the care it needs. They Can Be Expensive Frenchies are popular, and if you buy one from a reputable breeder, you can pay thousands of dollars. You will need to consider the cost of buying a quality dog food, toys, and routine vet care. In addition, if your Frenchie gets sick, you will need to be prepared to pay for treatment. They Can Be Stubborn Although Frenchies are loving, loyal, and wonderful companions, they can be stubborn at times. You need to be patient with them and avoid having a battle of the wills. This is something to be aware of when you decide to bring a French Bulldog home. They Can Suffer in the Heat French Bulldogs are not meant to live outdoors as they were bred to be companions. Final Thoughts People love French Bulldogs, and for good reasons. These friendly dogs are made to be companions and easily become part of your family. If you are considering a French Bulldog as an addition to your family, be sure to familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of owning a French Bulldog. You can make an informed decision and be sure that you can give your new dog everything it needs. Related Content. Of course, most dog breeds are loyal and make good companions, but a Frenchie will go the extra mile to ensure they can be near you. If you show them affection, they will certainly appreciate and reciprocate it. Many dog breeds like to roam around in the dirt, dig, and eat questionable things. In contrast, Frenchies are not so adventurous. This can be overwhelming for dog owners because keeping up with lively furry friends takes emotional and physical energy. Whether you live alone, with young children, or with a partner, a French Bulldog will settle in with no issues. On top of that, their small size makes them excellent choices for those who live in small homes or apartments. French Bulldogs Are Generally Calm and Quiet French Bulldogs are known for their docile temperament because they are always quiet and calm, even on walks or around many people. As long as you feed and care for them effectively, they should remain relatively quiet throughout the day and night. This can help you make a careful decision. Be sure to compare all pros and cons to decide whether or not this breed is the right choice for you: Frenchies Often Have Health Issues and Low Life Expectancy Unfortunately, like many other purebreds, French Bulldogs have specific health issues that cannot be ignored. According to a study by BioMed Central , otitis externa, diarrhea, and conjunctivitis were the most common issues found in French Bulldogs. Otitis externa is a condition that affects the ears, and it can be rather uncomfortable for dogs. It causes swelling, redness, and foul odors. Other conditions that affect French Bulldogs include: Breathing issues. Due to their flat faces, French Bulldogs—and other breeds, like Pugs—face breathing difficulties as they age. It can also result in loud breathing and snoring, which may keep you awake at night if the dog sleeps in your bedroom. Skin problems. Unfortunately, French Bulldogs are prone to allergies ; some of the main symptoms include skin rashes. The coat may also become dry and irritated. Eye infections and problems. They are also prone to cataracts , which are often hereditary. Herniated discs. Since some health conditions in French Bulldogs are hereditary i. A recent study by the Royal Veterinary College analyzed 30, dogs that died between January and July to determine which breeds have the longest and shortest lifespans. Analysts found the overall average life expectancy to be .But French Bulldogs have an average of just 4. I think it calls on all potential owners to stop and think before buying a Frenchie. Frenchies find it hard to float in water because their bodies are strong and heavy, so keeping them in the water for too long makes them more likely to lose energy and drown. If you have a swimming pool in your yard and are thinking of getting a French Bulldog, they should be supervised at all times when around the pool to minimize the chances of drowning. Placing fencing around the pool would also be a good idea for added safety. The exact amount of shedding varies from dog to dog, but weather and seasonal changes can greatly impact the shedding cycle. For example, French Bulldogs generally shed the most amount of fur during spring, as it helps prepare them for the warmer summer months. Having too much fur during the summer would cause them to become too warm, so it makes sense that shedding increases during this period. They also shed more in the fall, allowing them to grow a thicker, warmer coat to stay warm during the cold part of the year. As a result, you may notice hair around the home and on your clothing, which can quickly get messy. Frequent vacuuming is the best way to tackle dog hair, and you may need to vacuum more often than usual especially during spring when your Frenchie is most likely to shed. Frenchies Walk Very Slowly French Bulldogs can be fast walkers and might occasionally pull on the leash. Sometimes, you may even need to pull the leash to get them to walk with you. While this might not be an issue for some people, it can be annoying for others. For example, you might be in a hurry and need to complete a walk within 40 minutes. However, a slow-walking French Bulldog can increase the time it takes to finish the walk, turning a minute walk into a 1. Since older French Bulldogs spend much of their days lying around and relaxing, they may also gain weight and become unhealthy over time. As a result, demand is high, which drives up their cost. However, due to the demand and popularity of the breed, people are happy to pay such high prices. There are plenty of cheaper breeds to choose from, many of which are similar in size to a French Bulldog, so consider more affordable options if the four-digit range is too steep. Perhaps, you can find one at a rescue center or an animal shelter at your location. On top of the high initial cost, you must also factor in veterinary fees, insurance, and other essential costs. To learn more about the cost of dog food, check out this article, which discusses the different price points and more. However, plenty also breed dogs irresponsibly and in bad conditions. Since the Frenchie is such a popular breed, hundreds, if not thousands, of people nationwide breed these dogs, increasing the chance of irresponsible behaviors among breeders. Make sure to go with a reputable breeder who treats the dogs well and performs DNA tests to minimize any health issues that can be passed down. Before agreeing to purchase, look around the dog home to ensure everything is clean and above board. There are many health issues to consider before the selective breeding process, like dystocia , and many uneducated breeders simply ignore such issues or are unaware of their existence. Final Thoughts There are plenty of French Bulldog pros and cons to consider. After reading this article, you should be able to compare each pro and con to decide whether this breed is the right choice. Frenchies are generally excellent companions and require minimal grooming, but they also have different health issues that can decrease their quality of life. Consider all aspects before making a final decision. Related Posts You May Like:. This breed has surged in popularity over the last decade and with that has come a lot of irresponsible ownership. The bottom line is this; you need to make sure you understand the pros and cons of owning a French Bulldog before you buy. They are expensive to own, they can be high maintenance, but they will also bring a huge amount of joy and love into your life. Please Note: All the pros, cons, negatives, positives, downside and upsides I list here are based on personal experience of owning a Frenchie. I hope it helps you understand what you should know before owning a French Bulldog Owning a French Bulldog pros and cons French Bulldog: pros to ownership I am going to firstly list the positives and good reasons for owning a French Bulldog. Are good with kids Our son was around 3 years old when Claude first arrived as a puppy and they have grown up together to be the best of pals. Without doubt, French Bulldogs are one of the best breeds to own if you have young kids. They wrestle, play tug of war, go to the park, and adore each other. To find out more about how Frenchies like playing with kids, read my blog post about French Bulldogs and children. In other words, they will cheer people up and make people feel much better about themselves. They offer unconditional love, adore human companionship, and are often taken into hospitals, care homes, and schools. Are good for older people Which segues nicely onto the next pro for owning a French Bulldog; they are a great choice for older people and seniors. Reason being, they Frenchies require less exercise than bigger breeds, love to cuddle , and have been bred to offer more companionship than you could ever wish for. They are also small, so for the less mobile and more senior generation can be a great choice as a dog. Are local celebrities I never realized the impact owning a Frenchie would have until we had our first outdoor walk with Claude as a puppy. We get stopped all the time with people wanting to meet him! Claude is better known than my wife and I in our local village. Are natural entertainers French Bulldogs will make you laugh. As a breed they are absolute clowns and have lots of funny expressions, mannerisms, and traits that means there will never be a dull moment in your household. You have to see it to believe it, and when you do it will have you in stitches. Are chilled sometimes and adaptable One of the worries we had about owning a French Bulldog was how adaptable he would be to our lifestyle. This was one of the French Bulldog pros and cons we were most worried about, but our experience has been wholly positive. We take Claude everywhere with us, and he will just be chilled and adapt to his surroundings. In fact, just this weekend he came on an open top bus tour with us as you can see from the photo below. This is Claude on the bus on his way to a new and exciting walk. Are good with other pets Before we bought Claude as massive concern was how well he would adapt to our cat and vice versa. Overall, our experience of owning a cat and a Frenchie has been a positive one. They even sleep together in the same bed. The bottom line is this; our experience and that of Frenchie owners we know is that this breed tends to be very good with other pets. To find out how we introduced our Frenchie to our cat, read this blog post which has a video in it showing them playing together. Will sleep a lot You might consider this a negative trait, but for our family the fact that Claude the Frenchie sleeps a lot actually works in our favor. So why do we think sleeping is a pro? Well, it means that when he is awake, we can give him our full attention, wear him out, and then let him get back to sleep again. Love to play and have fun And talking of awake time, once your pup has his eyes open, he will love to play and have fun. They have become playmates, which has really helped us as a family with an only child. Just make sure that you have plenty of toys to keep your Frenchie entertained with. You can see some of the best on the market in my French Bulldog gear recommendations. Your Frenchie will love to play with you. Are part of an amazing community Once you own a Frenchie you will soon start to know other owners and almost become part of an exclusive club. The first time you meet another French Bulldog when walking yours you will see what I mean. Owning a Frenchie is almost like a badge of honor and places you in a very special community of dog lovers both offline and online. Are relatively easy to train Take this one with a pinch of salt, as how well your dog is trained will be down to the effort and time that you put in. It took us around a year to get Claude completely trained with recall, sit, and other commands, but once he was past the puppy stage, training did become a lot easier. At the time it was a challenge but looking back on it now it was actually relatively easy. I recommend puppy socialization classes and training classes though to make things smoother. Loyalty is a huge part of their genetic make-up. However, that can also prove to be not just a pro, but also a con as I will describe later in this guide regarding separation anxiety and being left alone. Claude likes to chill out with the whole family… including the cat! Are great for apartment living Due to their small stature and lack of needing intense exercise, Frenchies make great dogs for those that live in small apartments or flats. If this sounds like you please read my guide to French Bulldog apartment living which gives you the inside track on what to expect. Claude rarely barks, even when another dog is being aggressive towards him. In fact, the only time Claude will bark is if the doorbell goes or when he catches his reflection in a mirror. This is one of the factors that people often love about Frenchies and is a definite pro to ownership if a barking dog could be a problem in terms of where you live. Are very affectionate and cuddly Be prepared for this. But you need to give the affection back to keep your pup happy. To place this into perspective, when we first got our dog, our son was 3 years old. At that age he did tend to pull and prod our dog a lot, and not once did Claude ever react badly. I do believe this is a very common trait of Frenchies. They have been bred to be human companion dogs and that shines through in their lack of aggression. French Bulldogs: cons to ownership And now for the cons. There are plenty of reasons why you should not get a French Bulldog. The bottom line is that you need to be committed, have the money, patience, and time to give them the love and care that they need. From the cost of buying a puppy, possible C-sections , special food, and potential health issues and insurance, you will need a big wallet. This includes food, insurance and budgeting for any unexpected costs. Can be big chewers Assuming you get your Frenchie as a puppy, be prepared to place things in lock down when the teething starts. Even after teething they can still like a good chew. If your Frenchie is still chewing and being destructive as an adult it good even be the sign of a bigger health problem. To find out more about the teething timeline and what to expect read this guide. French Bulldog puppies will teeth up to 8 months old and will need something other than your shoes to chew on! Will fart a lot and it stinks! Their farts alone are a good enough reason to not get a Frenchie. Nobody can ever really prepare you for how bad their farts are. As a brachycephalic breed they have shortened snouts, the negative by-product being snoring check out why it happens. But the worst part? His butt. Are victims of irresponsible breeding Due to their increased popularity, there are irresponsible breeders out there looking to make a quick buck from a Frenchie sale. Frenchies have been bred and over-bred to achieve the look they have today. If you live anywhere near water that is higher than your Frenchies head, then this is a good enough reason to not get one. They can drown very easily so please be careful near water. Frenchies love to play but you need to be very careful near water as they are unable to swim un-aided. Are needy dogs In the positives of owning a Frenchie I spoke about the pros and cons where it related to their affection and loyalty. They will get depressed and possibly ill. I wrote a long guide which explains what signs you need to look out for if you suspect your Frenchie is depressed and sad. Are better in pairs This is why I believe two French Bulldogs are better than one. These social dogs will thrive off each other and will love the companionship of having a doggy friend. If you can afford a Frenchie, think about getting another dog too. A pair of Frenchies will help to stimulate each other and offer companionship. Can be hard to potty train In the pros section I mentioned that Frenchies can be relatively easy to train, but there was one aspect which took longer than the rest; potty training. I can only compare having a Frenchie puppy to having a human baby. You have to contend with a lot of mess, poop, and wee on the floor. It took us a long time to get this aspect cracked as Claude would wee on the floor even up to the age of around 9 months. I published a guide to potty training a Frenchie which will give you an idea on what to expect. Can eat their own poop Before we got Claude, I asked a friend of mine about the pros and cons to owning a French Bulldog. The first thing he said was the poop eating. I wrote a guide to why this happens with some tips on how to stop them doing it. Do shed a lot of hair French Bulldogs shed a lot of hair and like most dogs, are not hypoallergenic. If you suffer with allergies you might want to reconsider getting a Frenchie, as there will always be a lot of hair to deal with, particularly during the shedding parts of the year. To find out how much hair they shed, when it happens, and how you can reduce the problem, read this guide to French Bulldog shedding. In simple terms, you will have a lot of hair on your furniture and in your car. Suffer in the heat Frenchies cannot deal with heat. After just a few minutes of running around in the sun they will be exhausted to the point where they need to lie down in the shade to recover, and recovery can take up to 30 minutes. Thankfully he was ok, but over-heating is a big problem. You can read more in this guide which explains how you can stop your dog from over-heating. Love to dig holes Do you value your garden or back yard? If you do, you might need to Frenchie proof it. We had a problem with Claude where he was continually digging holes in our lawn. We actually had to build a fence and paving slabs are for him to keep in when un-attended. The reasons they like to dig are varied, so take a look at what the underlying digging issues could be. Are big droolers French Bulldogs also drool a lot. Most of the time this is nothing serious as simply happens after they eat or drink. He has these messy drool strings hanging from his mouth. We call them lip-hangers and need to clean them away with tissue — not a nice job! Needless to say, this can be part of their funny personality. But it can be frustrating if you need them to get off the couch or stop rolling around in mud when on a walk. I am not here to preach to you though, but please do your research into what health issues your Frenchie could end up having. Conclusion I hope this has given you a good idea of what to know about owning a French Bulldog, what to expect, and the pros and cons you need to consider. They come with their own unique challenges. To find out more and get answers to other Frenchie questions, use the search function at the top of the website. Why is my dog whining? They even make great companions for folks living in apartments or other small spaces. They are pet-friendly While all dogs are individuals, Frenchies tend to be outgoing and inquisitive creatures. They usually get along well with cats and other pet species, though a properly trained and socialized French bulldog will also typically get along with other dogs, no matter the size. Remember — training your dog to be a watchdog requires a lot of work for you both! Frenchies are Velcro dogs; all they want is to curl up beside their favorite people. Grooming is easy Frenchies are light shedders. Weekly brushings will help to remove any loose hair while promoting new hair growth and distributing skin oils throughout the coat. Yep — French bulldog grooming is that easy! As cute as it can be, having a short snout can restrict the passage of air to the lungs. If you go the adoption route, you can expect to pay more than for other rescues. These fees help defray the cost of medical expenses and the care of the dogs in their foster homes. They are prone to health problems According to PetMD , Frenchies are prone to major health problems, including brachycephalic syndrome, intervertebral disk disease, and hip dysplasia. A study of 2, Frenchies by the Royal Veterinary College revealed that .The most common health issues were ear infections, followed by diarrhea and conjunctivitis. The study revealed that when compared to other breeds, French bulldogs were particularly prone to skinfold dermatitis, cherry eye, and brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. Many of these health issues can emerge as early as 2 to 3 years of age. So, if you add a Frenchie to your family, you need to be prepared financially and emotionally in the event of health issues. Frenchies can suffer from separation anxiety Unfortunately, the one trait that attracts people to Frenchies can also lead to serious behavior issues. These dogs crave affection and companionship. When left alone for too long they can become depressed and suffer from separation anxiety. Image used with permission by copyright holder If after doing research, you want to add a Frenchie to the family, the next step is where to find your dog. If you prefer to purchase a puppy from a breeder, choose wisely. According to a National Geographic article, in their quest to make the perfect French bulldog, irresponsible breeders ignore health issues, such as chronic respiratory disorders. The Humane Society of the United States offers helpful tips on how to find a responsible dog breeder. It will be worth the effort knowing that your new puppy was bred by someone who put his health and well-being above profits. Editors' Recommendations.

blue merle english bulldog puppies for sale - Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Expect to have a very smart dog that will challenge you throughout the day. He will probably grow into a medium to large-sized dog with a weight of about 40 to 80 pounds. Both dogs are working breeds so you can expect a Shepsky to have high exercise needs. A task or daily job would keep them the happiest. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. While the undercoat is soft and dense, the guard hairs are straight and somewhat smooth. Depending on the specific pairing, the coat can be a toin coss. Be ready for shedding seasons with both of these dogs. You can expect your male German Shepherd Husky mix to be in cm with a weight of lbs kg. Female German Shepherd Husky mixes range from in cm , weighing in at lbs kg. Apartment Living Can you live in an apartment with a high-energy dog like the German Shepherd Husky mix? It depends. If you provide your dog with an outlet for his exercise needs which means lots of walks, play, and training then there should be absolutely no problem. However, their tendency for high-pitched barks or howling may cause problems with your neighbors. Proper training will help and entails teaching your dog the quiet command. Would I advise you to buy a mixed breed from a breeder? Definitely not. There are far too many mixed breeds sitting in shelters and waiting to be chosen. As long as there are no health issues present in their ancestry, you could argue that mixed breeds might be healthier than purebreds from backyard breeders. Beware of backyard breeders mixing in a third breed without stating so. Make sure to check out my breeder questions before you fall victim to scammers or backyard breeders. Make sure to talk to a veterinarian or nutritionist first. Do you have a German Shepherd Husky mix? Share with us your experiences in the comments below! Post navigation. Each litter typically produces adorably fluffy puppies, each of which may look different. Some will inherit heterochromia — or different colored eyes — from their Husky parent, while others will receive the longer snout of their German Shepherd parent. History: Emergence of the Gerberian Shepsky To understand this active and loving mixed breed, we must first understand purebred Huskys and German Shepherds. As we mentioned, the German Shepherd is known as a herding dog. They were developed in for herding and guarding sheep in Germany. The Husky is a working dog, first bred over years ago in Siberia. They arrived in Alaska in where they ran hard as sledding dogs and stole the hearts of locals with their goofy personalities. No formal records document the first hybrid litter of Gerberian Huskys. In general, the German Shepherd Husky Mix has an ideal temperament. They get their friendly, silly, and gentle qualities from the Husky side, while they receive loyalty and bravery from their Shepherd side. While Huskies never meet a stranger, shepherds are standoffish. The combination leads to a perfect balance. Once grown, your Gerberian Shepky will protect you, and guard your family from anything- all while providing love, cuddles and plenty of adorable moments to last a lifetime! They are great around children, and when socialized from a young age, can live well with other animals. The German Shepherd Husky mixed breed is incredibly intelligent will learn quickly when trained appropriately. Huskies can be stubborn and become bored easily, while the German Shepherd loves to learn new things and have a job to do. If your puppy is more Husky, he may prefer hours of running, rather than mental stimulation. For example, hold out a toy or treat and let your pup catch a whiff. Then, hide the object and let your pup sniff it out. Get creative with your training and bond with your puppy to find what works for you! Be sure to keep your Gerberian Shepsky well exercised and mentally stimulated to avoid developing unwanted negative behaviors like barking, howling a husky favorite , and chewing. Calorie requirements differ based on age, weight, activity level, and sex. For example, a quickly growing puppy requires more calories than an adult Shepsky and should eat food specifically formulated for puppies. In contrast, active adult German Shepherd Husky mixes require about calories, while less active and senior dogs only require calories per day. A high quality food, formulated for large breeds is best. Remember to account for special treats in daily caloric needs! Get the whole family together for a walk or run. Continuously switch up the route so your Shepsky never gets bored. Other recommendations include providing at least 2 hours a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. German Shepherd Husky mixes do best in an environment where they can play, run, and roam. Your new pet will be most content when able to participate in interactive activities like obstacle courses and challenging puzzles. With lots of love and attention, your Gerberian Shepsky will settle into a nice routine of work and play. Be sure to snuggle up for plenty of cuddles at the end of a long day! Shepsky Health Considerations Like their purebred parents, German Shepherd Husky mixes may suffer from certain health issues due to their genes. When you purchase a puppy, your breeder should be happy to provide a detailed health screening of the parents. Joint Dysplasia causes the elbows and hips to develop abnormally, leading to pain and eventual loss of movement if left untreated. If caught early, the condition can be treated successfully with medication or corrective surgery. Cataracts, inherited from the Husky parent, are issues with the lens of the eye that will lead to decreased vision over time. If left untreated, your Gerberian Shepsky may become disoriented, confused, and even aggressive as he loses his ability to process his surroundings. Again, if caught early, this disease can be treated with medication or surgery. This condition causes the stomach to swell and twist around it self. The risk is passed on to your Shepsky and great care must be taken to avoid it! Simply remain attentive to how much and how often your pup is eating and you should be safe. And, much like a wolf, the Shepsky mix possesses a strong snout and piercing eyes. They may even have two different colored eyes! Puppies with heterochromia are highly coveted and will cost more. But they are worth it — so gorgeous and unique! Just like the eyes, Gerberian Shepsky coats may be a variety of colors based on which parent they most closely resemble. Common colors include white, gray, silver, tan, red, and the classic German Shepherd coat color — Sable! Because the Husky originated as a sled dog, their coats are adapted for the cold climates of Siberia and Alaska. However, they are double coated and may shed one coat to accommodate warm temperatures. Your Shepsky will also have a double coat that requires twice weekly brushing sessions to promote proper shedding and skin health. Additionally, frequent full bathes are harmful to your German Sherpherd Husky mixes natural oils. This can lead to irritation and dry, itchy skin. Instead, only bath them when necessary with a gentle shampoo. Simply spot clean in between with a damp cloth, and use a non-toxic deodorizing spray if necessary! We've included some summary facts and stats below to help you make your decision. Do you think this gorgeous, regal looking dog is right for your family? Yet, cuddly, friendly, and adorable! Like German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies, this designer dog has a double coat. It has a tough top coat and an insulating layer of undercoat that is made up of short hair. A German Shepherd and Husky Mix is very sensitive to vocal commands, making the training process more efficient and much easier.
