We are currently overwhlemed with requests to rehome dogs. In many cases these dogs are relatively young and due to inadequate training, boundary setting and guidance are reactive towards dogs and people. In some instances, they come with a bite history. It is virtually impossible for us to rehome these dogs. Often if they have the experience, visiting grandchildren for example, may make taking on a dog with these issues very difficult. As a result, these dogs are ending up in kennels at great cost to the rescue, with little chance of ever finding a home willing to give them a chance. All of these dogs have been totally failed by their previous owners. If you take on a dog at any age, it is a commitment for the duration of their life. If the dog displays behaviours that you are not happy with, it is your responsibility as a dog owner to put in the required work. This may be done by reaching out to a qualified behaviourist or trainer and even if you get professional help, you will still need to put in the work in terms of putting what you have learned into practice, and by repetition. Dogs are sentient creatures; they are not disposable. They are not there until you meet a partner, or until you move away, get a new job or your relationship breaks down. They are for life. Along the way this seems to have been forgotten. Dogs are family and deserve the time and commitment you would put into any family member. We can help with a list of approved trainers and give advice to help you work with your dog but sadly are not in a position currently to help rehome these dogs. Do the right thing by your dog, get help and don't expect rescues to pick up the pieces because you have failed your best friend. They would do anything for you, so we think they deserve the same. Tasha Desperately Needs A Home Tasha arrived in the UK in and has been in kennels ever since that's nearly 5 years, unwanted and unloved! When she first arrived she was only a puppy but she was afraid and panicked as she was carried away from the van, went to bite the person carrying her and managed to escape and was running loose for 2 weeks. We do believe that this is the reason as to why she doesn't like people she doesn't know. She was caught and now she knows everyone at the kennels she is a happy contented dog. Tasha will need someone who is prepared to visit the kennels maybe a few times to gain her trust. Once she trusts and is settled shewill be your faithful companion. She loves other dogs so would perhaps be better being rehomed where there is another dog in the home. She will follow other dogs and settles quickly in the presence of a happy relaxed dog. She has no interest in cats, she just wants to be by your side. Please give Tasha the chance of having her forever home, she has waited far too long. If you are interested please complete an adoption form so that a volunteer can contact you. During the past 2 years Swiis have proudly sponsored over 30 dogs in partnership with GSDR, most of these dogs are from overseas and with the dedicated volunteers and partners of GSDR many have found their forever homes. You can view some of the sponsored doggy updates and their progress by clicking here. Having adopted 2 dogs from GSDR ourselves, my wife Jill and I are passionate about helping as many dogs as we can and urge people who are thinking about adding a canine member to their family to consider adopting a rescue dog, there are so many rescue dogs waiting in temporary homes and kennels both home and abroad who need a safe and loving forever home. German Shepherds are the most loving of dogs, they try very hard to please and are extremely loyal and great family companions, you just need to give them direction and an abundance of love. Whether you decide to provide a temporary home or adopt, the GSDR team will help you at every stage of your journey, with invaluable support and guidance. Swiis Foster Care are pleased to continue to work in partnership with the GSDR and offer financial support to those dogs who are in urgent need. One of the dogs we are currently supporting is called Poppy who is a Romanian rescue found on the streets and was very undernourished and heavily pregnant. The pups are now 4 months old and GSDR, with support from Swiis Foster Care, will eventually arrange for their safe travel to new and loving homes. At the moment Swiis Foster Care have foster children in placement and they are at the heart of supporting Poppy and her babies; We recently ran a competition for our fostered children to suggest names for each of the 7 pups, 4 boys and 3 girls. Please click here to see pictures of the newly named pups and their proud mum Poppy, they are so adorable. Most of these dogs are finding their way into the UK through unscrupulous breeders in eastern Europe or coming in via questionable rescuers with no rescue back up here in the UK. Most that we have helped so far, have been picked up as strays here in the UK. This is certainly not the breed for everyone and if you are considering owning a Caucasian Ovcharka , please make sure that you thoroughly research the breed first. They may be the cutest bundles of fluff imaginable as puppies but they are a giant breed and will grow into a very large immensely powerful dog. Caucasian Shepherds that we have for rehoming. The Handy Nanny is available for dog walking, pet sitting and is happy to help with other pets if you are at work or away on holiday. Alice has been involved with GSD rescue since a child and has grown up with dsome very difficult dogs so nothing fazes her. All breeds catered for, all temperaments catered for. We will find the right home for all the dogs that come into our care no matter how long it takes. Welcome to Wallace Kennels Dog Rescue A small family run rescue established since dedicated to helping stray and unwanted dogs in and around the Essex area. About Us Wallace Kennels is a small family run Dog Rescue with help from a team of dedicated volunteers without whom we could not function. The kennels have been in operation for over 45 years. It was initially a thriving boarding kennels and cattery run by Vera Robinson who was awarded an MBE for her tireless work in .She sadly died in and her son Mark and daughter-in-law Dee have continued to run and renovate the kennels ever since. Wallace Kennels are the stray dog pound for the Boroughs of Brentwood and Chelmsford and will occasionally take over-flow dogs from other areas as and when needed. We also take in unwanted and abandoned dogs for rehabilitation and rehoming once ready from the general public - space permitting. The kennels can accommodate up to 60 dogs at any one time but try to keep to more manageable numbers to ensure that all the dogs get the care and assistance they need and deserve. We pride ourselves on getting to know our dogs and aim to find each and everyone that comes through our doors their forever home, however long that may take us. We do, in principle, have a non-destruct policy but sadly on very rare occasions, for a variety of reasons, it may not be possible to save someone - these decisions are taken jointly and with much sadness. We are a non-profit rescue that rely solely on the goodwill and generosity of the public in order to stay open. We are extremely grateful for any donations no matter how small - every single penny helps us to continue doing what we do, improve our facilities and stay open. All of these dogs and others available can be found on our Facebook page. Home: Text.

Share 0 Shares The Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that is obtained from breeding a playful, hardworking, and energetic Bernese Mountain Dog with an intelligent, beautifully coated and highly trainable Poodle. As such, the gorgeous Bernedoodle breed inherits some, if not all of these beautiful traits from its parent breeds. This hybrid dog or designer dog breed is quite popular in the United, as it is arguably one of the most popular doodles you can get, with lots of breeders. If you reside in Ohio and you are interested in getting a Bernedoodle puppy as a companion dog, then you definitely should check out any of the breeders we have listed below. They breed highly socialized, top-quality Bernedoodles for numerous families in the state. Located in Coshocton County, Ohio, Angel Breeze Puppies are fine breeders of standard Bernedoodle puppies that are bred according to the highest breeding standards. They produce Bernedoodle puppies of all sizes that grow up to become excellent family companions due to their loyal and empathic nature. The puppies also make great show dogs for confirmation events and this is due to their well-groomed beautiful coats that are simply adorable. The breeding program started in so they boast over 15 years of Bernedoodle breeding experience so you can get quality assurance. All their Bernedoodle puppies are raised in the family house. This is a very beautiful and spacious acre property in the Coshocton town of Fresno, Ohio. It provides them with more than enough room for the puppies to run and practically play to their complete satisfaction. The puppies are raised in a loving and free family-oriented environment where they get to socialize at will. They are exposed and allowed to interact with people of varying age groups as well as with other pets and animals. They are also exposed to a wide variety of interacting sounds, sights, and textures to help boost their socialization. They have spent a lot of time and resources trying to boost their breeding line. This has resulted in numerous AKC-registered Sires and Dams that are added to their breeding program. They are loved and each comes with impressive bloodlines. The breeding parent dogs each come with their impressive pedigrees, they are genetically health tested for conditions that could affect the Bernedoodle puppies and they are each well checked and certified by the OFA and Cerf for good functioning parts. All their Bernedoodle puppies come with a written 2 years health guarantee. This frees them from genetic health issues as well as dysplasia. They also are fully vaccinated and dewormed and each comes with updated health records from a licensed vet. Angel Breeze Puppies Contact Details. Research: First and foremost, make sure that the breeder is reputable and has a good track record. There are many ways to research this, including reading online reviews and talking to other dog owners who have purchased Bernedoodles puppies from them. Health: Second, you want to make sure that the Bernedoodle puppies are healthy and well-cared for. Ask the breeder about the health of the parents and grandparents, and whether or not the puppies have been to the vet for a checkup. This means they should be introduced to a variety of people, and other animals, which will be beneficial for novice owners. Puppies from a reputable breeder are going to be more expensive than those from a backyard breeder. But, in the long run, a puppy from a reputable breeder is going to be healthier and have fewer behavior issues. Meet the Parents: If possible, you should meet the parents of the puppies before making your final decision. This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of temperament and appearance. But if you need more convincing, here are just a few reasons why a Bernedoodle might be the perfect pup for you. Coat: Bernedoodles come in three different coat types: wavy, curly, and straight. Temperament: Bernedoodles are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are also very loyal and affectionate with their families and get along well with children and other pets. Size: Bernedoodles come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh anywhere from pounds, while Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh in at pounds. Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest of the bunch, weighing in at 12 pounds or less. Health: Bernedoodles are generally a healthy breed, and are not known to suffer from any major health conditions. However, like all breeds, they can be susceptible to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. But with proper care and regular vet check-ups, your Bernedoodle should enjoy a long and healthy life. When it comes to finding the perfect Bernedoodle puppy in Ohio, price is often a major consideration. While there is no definitive answer when it comes to how much a Bernedoodle puppy may cost, there are a few things that can help you budget for your new furry friend. However, depending on the specific breeder and bloodline of your puppy, the price could be higher or lower. In addition to the cost of the puppy itself, there are also a few other expenses to consider when bringing a Bernedoodle into your home. These include things like shots, spaying or neutering, and microchipping. All of these costs can add up, so be sure to factor them into your budget when deciding whether or not a Bernedoodle is the right breed for you. Boxer puppies for sale Odessa, Texas Boxer puppies for sale Odessa, Texas Introduction of the Boxer The Boxer dog breed originated in Germany and has been around since the late 19th century. His main purpose is for hunting large game. But this dog breed was also useful in guarding and driving livestock. It is said that he got his name due to using his front paws for just about anything. Boxer dogs look intimidating with their stern-looking faces and powerful bodies. But they are actually very loving family dogs that get along with children and other animals. They love being with their families, and being separated from them can lead them to develop separation anxiety. Since this working dog is highly intelligent but stubborn in nature, he is better suited for experienced owners. The average lifespan of the breed is 9—10 years. Look for a boxer puppies for sale Odessa Texas? Here is a brief background of this protective dog with a good sense of humour. History of the Boxer The Boxer dog breed is a descendant of the now-extinct Bullenbeisser a fighting dog with Mastiff ancestry and the Old English Bulldog. He was developed in Germany in the 19th century as hunters of deer, wild boar, and bear. Later on, he was used to guard and drive cattle. The man responsible for the creation of the Boxer breed was Georg Alt, who was from Munich. He crossed a brindle-coloured female Bullenbeisser named Flora with a local dog of unknown breed. In , the first German Boxer dog named Flocki joined a dog show in Munich. After winning the dog show, he was the first-ever Boxer dog to be listed down in the German Studbook. Modern Boxer dogs were believed to be the descendants of Flocki. He was then imported to the United States in and was accepted by the American Kennel Club the following year. The American Boxer Club was established in .In both world wars, various military tasks were given to Boxer dogs including guard dogs, attack dogs, and messenger dogs. The British Boxer Dog Club was then formed in .The Boxer breed was recognised by the Kennel Club shortly thereafter and classified under the Working Group. Versatile and hard-working, these dogs are capable of carrying out different canine work. Boxers are good choices for protection dogs, police dogs, service dogs, and guide dogs for the blind. Temperament and Intelligence of the Boxer puppies Odessa for sale Extremely patient and gentle, the Boxer breed is good with children. But he is recommended for families with older children as he may accidentally knock over toddlers. Befriending other pets is possible if the Boxer dog is properly socialised at a young age. It will keep him from viewing small animals as prey and reduce his tendency to dominate same-sex dogs. Is a Boxer a good family dog? Yes, the Boxer breed is a good family dog. He may look noble and intimidating, but he is actually considered the Joker of the Dog World. Boxer dogs are playful and fun-loving. They love to be part of family activities and be the centre of attention. Are Boxer dogs dangerous? Boxer dogs may be tough-looking, but they are not generally aggressive. But they will stand guard and defend their families if necessary. Boxer dogs are initially wary of strangers, but they eventually warm up to them if no danger is detected. Their protective and loyal nature makes them good guard dogs as well as watchdogs. Are Boxers easy to train? Yes, Boxer dogs are easy to train if you are already experienced in handling the breed. They are intelligent but tend to be independent and stubborn. Due to this, they are not suited for first-time owners. Boxer dogs respond better to people that are firm and consistent. However, firm does not mean harsh. Instead of strict training methods, positive reinforcements are more effective in teaching this breed basic dog manners and tricks. Boxer Breed Highlights The Boxer dog breed is a loving, loyal, and protective companion. Boxer dogs are comical companions despite their intimidating appearance. The Boxer breed has low-maintenance grooming needs. As an energetic working dog, he has high exercise needs. Boxer dogs tend to be destructive when they are left alone or unable to let off steam. Are there miniature boxers? Yes, but they are rare. Miniature boxers are either a product of mating purebred runts or cross-breeding small dogs that have similar characteristics to boxers, such as Boston terriers, pugs, rat terriers, and fox terriers. While some of these minis may closely resemble their larger counterparts, they may not act similarly. Are boxers hypoallergenic? Unfortunately, boxers are not hypoallergenic. What problems do Boxers have? Boxer dogs are brachycephalic, which means they have flat faces. This trait narrows their airway and causes breathing problems. As a result, Boxers should not be out in the sun for a long time as it can lead to heatstroke. Overexercising them must be avoided too to avoid triggering breathing difficulties. How long do Boxer dogs live? The Boxer dog breed has a short lifespan compared to other dogs. He can only live up to 9—10 years, and this is due to the prevalence of health issues in the breed. When buying a Boxer puppy, look for a reputable breeder whose breeding stock and litters are health-screened. This will help you determine how likely is your chosen Boxer puppy going to develop certain health conditions. March 15, by Samantha Since English bulldog acts affectionately and calmly, most people love keeping them for pet purposes. Often, that bulldog you will find lying comfortably on the couch tends to be the English bulldog. One interesting thing is their tail. But, here are 4 English bulldog tail types you should know. The bulldog breed has several breeds, and the English bulldog will be one of them. Although these other bulldogs, like the American bulldog, may have different types, the English bulldog has no other types. You will find only one kind of English bulldog. You may, however, categorize these dogs according to their body features, like tails. They may come in different shapes and sizes, even from the same litter. These tail sizes and shapes get used by many people to tell English bulldogs apart. The tail exists as a short tail and may not get docked as some people may get tempted to think. Docking bulldog tails may get you on the wrong side with the law of animal rights since it became illegal both in the US and UK. So, if you see the corkscrew or stubby tail in an English bulldog, it will be natural. What are the English bulldog tail types? To answer this, yes, English bulldogs have tails when born. Although they may be very short, you will see them. The different types of tails in the English bulldog include: Straight tails— people often refer to this type as a pump-handle tail. The tails will be short and low hanging and taper down to a certain point. The American Kennel Club considers bulldogs with this type of tail as desirable. You will often find most English bulldogs with this type of tail, and it runs across all bulldog types. Unlike the myths that these are faulty, they exist just like other natural tails in bulldogs and get very healthy for your English bulldog to possess. Long and wavy tails— some people often wonder if the English bulldog may possess a long tail. To your surprise, yes. Some English bulldogs get born with long tails. This phenomenon may get traced back to their breeding. If it was a crossbreed with a parent dog possessing a long tail, then the chances of having an English bulldog with a long tail get higher. Although very rare, you may find a pure breed English bulldog with a long tail. The wavy tails will also find their way in the English bulldog, with most breeders considering them to be faulty. Wavy tails may be healthier than corkscrew tails and make the dog wag easier. The corkscrew tails —these tails in the English bulldog breed wrap downwards to give a corkscrew shape. This tail type will be widespread among the English bulldog, just like the straight tail. In puppies, this tail type may be flexible. As the dog matures, the tail becomes stiff to form a bun-like shape. For breeders, this tail type gets less desired. They will avoid breeding litters with this tail type, and so you might not see an English bulldog with such a tail, although you may see one once in a while. Due to some medical conditions, the tail may get surgically removed and leave the dog without a tail. So if you ever saw one without a tail, this should explain it. The explanation behind the English bulldog with a long tail As we have seen, you rarely find English bulldogs with long tails. Some people find them funny, and some breeders refer to them as faulty. Some people see long tails in the English bulldogs as abnormalities. But, this happens to be as natural as other tails. Certain factors may have contributed to a bulldog having a long tail. These include: Through crossbreeding If an English bulldog got crossbred with another long-tailed dog, chances would be that the generation might have bulldogs with a long tail. The bulldog has undergone many crossbreeding tests and experiments to bring out various traits. In the process, some develop long tails. If there was a long tail gene somewhere along the line of an English bulldog, this gene might present itself later in the life chain of this English bulldog. You will then have an English bulldog with a long tail. Instead, it has altered their genetic variability [1] , bringing about a weaker generation than the first English bulldog. This gene variation has contributed to the long list of health issues [2] associated with the modern English bulldog. By chance Just like things happen in the world, you may have individuals with different characteristics from other similar individuals. This way, you may get a pure breed English bulldog with a long tail. This scenario has a slight chance of happening, but it does happen. However, we may trace it to the first breeding attempts to change the bulldogs from bull-baiting to other friendly bulldog types. This attempt was good, but it gave birth to the various disorders [3] associated with the English bulldog and different bulldog tail types. What are some of the English bulldog tail problems? As we have seen various English bulldog types depending on their tail sizes and shapes, we also need to understand that these tails may develop health problems prompting their removal. The corkscrew tails will be highly associated with most English bulldog type tail problems. Screw tails happen if there happens to be an abnormal development of the tail bones. Although this may be a genetic abnormality, people have also deliberately introduced this possibility because they love the shape of this tail. The complications associated with the screw tails include: Tail Fold Pyoderma in the English bulldog type This condition comes about when the dog flushes its tail with its butt. The movement of the tail causes friction between these two places prompting inflammation. The inflammation gets infected with bacteria due to the warm conditions between the tail and butt region. The infection may get treated with antibiotics but tend to recur for the same reasons. The Spinal Column Malformations in English bulldog types The screw tail English bulldogs exhibit two significant types of spinal column malformations. This phenomenon consequently leads to not fully enclosing the crucial nerves in the spinal cord. This condition mainly affects young male English bulldogs and contributes to other health issues. How to fix the English bulldog tail problems? Antibiotics may help relieve the dog in the case of spinal Bifida. Therefore, for the two conditions, the ultimate medical solution gets achieved by surgically removing the screw tails. This surgery, scientifically known as caudectomy [5] , helps fully cater to the discomforts and health problems associated with screw tail in the English bulldog type. Sometimes, these infections that affect the screw tail region may get avoided. In this regard, we provide you with a few tips that may help keep your four-legged friend infection-free. Use unscented wipes or wet cloth to wipe the debris and gunk below the tail. Use a towel or dry absorbent tissue to dry the wiped region dry Develop a routine to clean the area below the tail with warm water daily and dry with a towel or absorbent tissue Visit your veterinary doctor if the butt region has a foul smell and seems irritated or inflamed Is it possible to find old English bulldogs with a tail? We have seen various reasons that result in tail removal in most bulldogs. It will not be abnormal for the English bulldog type to find no old English bulldog with a tail, especially if they had the screw tail. But as these dogs grow and mature, environmental factors play an essential role in their lives. They may tend to get more sweaty under their tails as they gain weight. This sweating may trigger infections in most of the screw tailed English bulldog types and hence get their tails surgically removed. So, yes, you may find old English bulldogs with tails, but you may also get old ones without tails. Tail docking has become illegal in most countries of the world. Initially, working dogs had their tails docked to limit distractions. When taxing on non-working dogs started, some people could dock their docks to avoid the taxes. As times changed, docking was illegal in most countries, especially if you needed to dock your dog for cosmetic purposes. You will only be allowed to cut your English bulldog tail for medical reasons and if your veterinary suggests so. As we have seen, this procedure gets carried out mainly in screw-tailed English bulldog types. The tail gets cut to avoid health issues associated with bacterial infections [6]. Is it dangerous to cut an English bulldog tail? The wound that results from docking may get infected with bacteria. A bacterial infection on the wound may cause more suffering, so you should adhere to the post-surgery drug prescription by your veterinary surgeon. Due to the cruelty of the sport, it should be condemned and stopped. The wound will be painful for days or even weeks before it recovers. If not done right, docking may cause excessive bleeding and death. Some nerve damage may also occur in the surgical area, causing the dog more suffering. However, the English bulldog breed may be categorized using their tail shapes and sizes. But, under medical conditions, docking may be approved to the English bulldog type. If you have one or intend to buy one, ensure you keep the tail region clean to avoid bacterial infection, which may lead to docking. However, the Bulldog's tail is still another bodily component that is very recognized. So, let us discuss all about bulldog tails and their types. Bulldogs with straight and curly tails are most common and most admired by the Bulldog community. There is no denying that English Bulldogs have tails, but those tails can come in a few distinct varieties, and some of those variations have a more pronounced appearance than others. Unfortunately, certain types of tails have also been linked to major health concerns. Curly Tail This bulldog tail swirls loosely like a pig's tail. People have the misconception that it also curls back on itself as Basenji does. This particular tail form is becoming less desirable for breeders. They will avoid mating litters with dogs who have this sort of tail, and as a result, it is possible that you will never see a bulldog with a tail like that, although it is not impossible. Corkscrew Tail Corkscrew tails appear wrapped at birth, but they are still flexible. As the Bulldog puppies mature, their tails will become permanently entangled in the same position, giving them the appearance of cinnamon rolls that have been affixed to the rear ends of Bulldogs. Wavy Tails The American Kennel Club disapproves of bulldogs having tails that are too long or wavy in their appearance. There is no connection between the form of a Bulldog's tail and the outstanding personality they possess, which is fantastic news. Long-tailed Bulldogs, much like other varieties of Bulldogs, may be beautiful pets and loyal friends as long as their owners do not intend to enter them in conformation dog competitions. Straight And Long Tails Bulldog puppies are born with a tail that is already beginning to resemble its mature form. The American Kennel Club states that the most attractive types of tails are those that are either straight and long or twisted into a corkscrew form. The tail of a young Bulldog puppy is straight and very flexible. It is broadest at its base and narrows to the point that is both pointed and triangular in shape. As you may have seen, a bulldog with a long tail is a highly unusual sight. Some individuals think they're hilarious, but others in the breeding industry consider them defective. Long tails are considered anomalies by some individuals when it comes to bulldogs. However, this particular tail is just as natural as any other tail. It's possible that a bulldog's long tail was caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences. These are the following: Through Hybridization If a bulldog were to be mated with another type of dog that has a long tail, there is a possibility that the offspring might have bulldogs with a longer tail. Numerous research studies involving crossbreeding have been performed on bulldogs to bring forth various characteristics. During this procedure, some of them grow incredibly long tails. This circumstance does not diminish these bulldogs in any way. If a gene for a long tail existed at some point in the pedigree of a bulldog, then it is possible that this gene might become active later in the life cycle of a bulldog. You will end up with a dog that resembles a bulldog but has a long tail. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, haven't benefited all that much from the interbreeding. Instead, it has changed their genetic variability, producing a less robust generation than the original Bulldog. This particular gene variant contributes to the extensive list of health problems connected with the contemporary Bulldog. No one who owns a dog has the right to determine that their pet's tail is excessive and should be cut off. If a dog's tail has to be removed for health reasons, a veterinary surgeon may recommend that the procedure be performed. The tail can get infected, making it difficult for the dog to defecate. This is something that is often observed in bulldogs who have corkscrew tails. Regarding Bulldog's health, ignoring the tail and the back part might lead to issues in the future, such as illnesses and irritation. To prevent this from happening, you should ensure that the region under your Bulldog's dimpled tail is kept clean. Remove dust and grime with a moist washcloth or baby wipes that do not contain fragrance. After that, wipe the area with a gentle and absorbent tissue or cloth. It's also a good idea to rinse the bulldog tails and the space around them with warm water in order to maintain a clean environment. If you notice an abnormally unpleasant smell emanating from the rear end of your Bulldog, particularly if the region feels sore and sensitive, then a trip to the veterinarian may be required. Bulldog puppies are born with tails, much like puppies of other famous and less well-known dog breeds. However, their tails are not very long. Because of how small their tails are, many people mistakenly assume that they were born without tails. However, this is not the case at all. There is a high incidence of bulldogs being born with tails that look like this. Particular Bulldogs do not require their tails to be amputated. Furthermore, this requires a costly, major surgery. In addition, throughout this surgery, your Bulldog will be given anesthesia, which is a very risky choice in and of itself. Amputation of the Bulldog's tail is only advised in cases when the animal continues to have painful sores and infections in the region even after getting proper medicinal treatment. The Bulldog can, in fact, have a relatively long tail. This is usually associated with breeding as discussed above. Although some authorities on dogs assert that this is due to the practice of crossbreeding, this is not necessarily the case. There is a high incidence of Bulldogs being born with a tail that is regarded to be lengthy. On the other hand, it is essential to point out that the tail is not as long as the one on a GSD or an Alaskan Malamute; instead, it is something that is more analogous to the tails of Corgis, which can be smaller. The most important thing to remember is that there is no cause to be concerned about your Bulldog having a longer tail if it is born with a long tail. The corkscrew tail with deviation in Bulldog is referred to as a "screw tail. This condition is rarely observed in Frenchies, pugs, and terriers. Most Bulldogs do not have the ability to wag their tails. It's possible that particular bulldogs will be able to wiggle their stumpy tails somewhat. Still, a happy bulldog would generally have a wagging bottom since their tails are generally too short to move rapidly. Conclusion When it comes to beautiful Bulldogs, there are many things to adore about them. What is there not to enjoy about this pup, whether it is their delightfully squashed face, gigantic body type, or confident and pleasant personality. Having a tail that is typically stubby and small from birth is just another lovable quality to add to the list. This canine companion is born with a naturally short tail, which is accomplished by genetics and natural breeding to achieve this attribute. As the number of nations that outlaw cosmetic tail docking and tail cropping treatments increases, these practices are being done for the right reasons. Bulldogs are iconic for their looks. They are squat and heavily built, with jowly, wrinkled faces and a pronounced underbite. In the United States, their pushed-in faces are inextricably linked with the Marine Corps. So most of us can easily recognize a Bulldog by their face. But what about the other end? Can you picture an English Bulldog tail? All English Bulldogs are born with tails, and most hold onto them for their whole life. However, their tails are naturally shorter than those of most dog breeds. Whilst full-tailed dogs have 19 to 23 coccygeal vertebrae, Bulldogs are born with just 6 to .It says Bulldog tails should be either straight or screwed, but never curved or curly. They must be short, with a thick base tapering to a fine tip. And they should always hang or corkscrew downwards from their base. Straight tails Straight tails are the most prominent Bulldog tail type. They are one of the Bulldog tail types accepted by the American Kennel Club for show standard dogs. Straight tails are only a couple of inches long, but this is their natural length, and not the result of being cropped in puppyhood. These are the least desirable tail type for Bulldogs, according to their breed standard. Screw tails Screw tails are twisted in a series of tight kinks, so that they sit close against the body like a bun. The dog in the photos accompanying this article has a screw tail. When Bulldog puppies with screw tails are born, the bones and spaces between them are still soft enough that the tail can be gently unfurled. But as they grow up the bones harden and set in position. This tail type is also acceptable in show dogs. But unfortunately it is also associated with some pretty serious health problems. English Bulldog Tail Problems Screw tails are caused by abnormal development of the tail bones. Despite starting out as a genetic fault, lots of Bulldogs now have screw tails because some people like how it looks, so they have deliberately fixed the possibility in the Bulldog population. However, screw tails are associated with several complications: Tail fold pyoderma Tail fold pyoderma is a common problem of screw tail English bulldogs. This creates a site for bacterial or fungal infections to enter the body — and they quickly take hold because conditions underneath the tail are so warm and damp. Sometimes antibiotics are are enough to treat tail fold pyoderma, but often surgical amputation of the tail is the only way to stop it recurring. Spinal column malformations English Bulldogs with screw tails also have an increased frequency of spinal column malformations. Another example is cranial thoracic vertebral canal stenosis CTVC , where the vertebrae are malformed and squeeze the spinal cord. Both of these conditions require surgery to fix them. English Bulldog Tail Docking Bulldogs have such naturally short tails that some people wonder if it has been achieved by tail docking. Later, when taxes were introduced on non-working dogs, people started docking the tails of sporting and pet breeds, to try and pass them off as working dogs. However, it is widely regarded as unnecessary, and a potential welfare concern. Due to their extremely flattened faces, Bulldogs are likely to have difficulty breathing , which increases the risk of heatstroke in hot weather. The shape of their skull and jaw also increases the risk of dental problems. Even their eyes can be negatively affected by being set in such shallow sockets. English Bulldogs have high rates of orthopedic problems relating to their joints. English Bulldogs are also vulnerable to tracheal hypoplasia, where the windpipe is extremely narrow, making it difficult to breathe and shortening their lifespan. All of these conditions have a hereditary component. Which means they can be passed genetically from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, the entire English Bulldog breed was founded from just a small number of individuals, which means there is very little genetic diversity in the modern population. However, another breed exists which attempts to recreate an older version of the Bulldog. One with a longer tail, a more pronounced muzzle, and a lower frequency of genetic diseases. And that breed is the Olde English Bulldogge. Screw tails are specifically disqualified by the breed standard. Do Bulldogs Have Tails? English Bulldogs have short tails which can be straight or screwed. But, some Bulldogs do need to have their tail amputated altogether due to screw tail related health problems. Are Bulldogs born with tails? Bull dog tail: Straight type For someone used to the lack of a tail on a Bulldog, a Bulldog with a tail would look like an oddity. However, you will rarely come across a Bulldog with full tail. Do Bulldogs have long tails? Yes, some Bulldogs do have long tails. In English and French Bulldogs, a long tail is very rare. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! Are Bulldogs born with long tails? The kind of tail on a Bulldog depends on its breed and heritage. The same goes for French Bulldogs or Frenchies. If your English or French Bulldog puppy tail is long, it shows a mixed parentage. The American Kennel Club considers short and corkscrew tails as the standard for Bulldogs. For them, such a tail is the breed standard. Luckily for you, we will cover that next. Why do Bulldogs have short tails? Bulldogs come from a lineage of strong, hardworking dogs. In their early days, Bulldog owners cropped their tails to prevent rabies and infections, improve back strength, and prevent injuries during combat. Bulldogs with naturally smaller tails were preferred and selectively bred, which is why today, most Bulldogs have a tiny tail. This trait extends to other Bulldog species. Take the French Bulldog, for instance. Are French Bulldogs born with tails? Are Frenchies born with tails? French Bulldogs is another Bulldog breed that many consider tailless since they lack a sizeable tail. Do Frenchies have tails? French Bulldog undocked tails can be straight, screw-shaped, or tapered. As per kennel club requirements, screw-shaped tails must not curl too much, and the tapered tail must not stand upright. The French Bulldog straight tail must extend straight down and be long enough to cover their rear end to fulfill breed standards. Kennel clubs prefer small tails on Frenchies. However, you may wonder what kind of tail these dogs are born with. Are Frenchies born with short tails or are they born with long tails? Are French Bulldogs born with short tails? Yes, purebred French Bulldogs are born with short tails. Breeders of this adorable dog have selectively bred short-tailed varieties to go with their overall cute appearance. But can Frenchies come with long tails? Are French Bulldog born with long tail? Have you ever seen a French Bulldog with long tail? French Bulldogs usually have tailless behind that suits their petite bodies. Some people believe that French Bulldogs are born with long tails that are docked for cosmetic reasons. Allow us to clear that up. Thanks to selective breeding, Frenchies are no longer born with tails that need docking. Their tails are naturally short and come in three shapes. French Bulldog tail types There are three types of French Bulldog tails. No matter the type, none of these tails grow bigger or longer than an inch or two. A French Bulldog with a tail type that is different from these would be a sign of crossbreeding. The three types are: 1. Tapered tail The tapered tail is thick at the root and thin at the tip, making a V-shape. Screwed tail The screwed tail got its name because it resembles a screw. Straight tail The straight tail extends straight down but is still short and stumpy. Do English Bulldogs have tails? Do English Bulldogs have long tails? Or do they have short tails? Do they even have tails at all? The answer to all these questions is yes; English Bulldogs have tails, and they can be short or long. These tails grow more pronounced with age. Are English Bulldogs born with tails? We discuss it further below. Are English Bulldogs born with long tails? Yes, some English Bulldogs are born with long tails. Although such tails are perfectly healthy in every way, kennel clubs and Bulldog purists frown upon long tails in English Bulldogs. Unfortunately, this also encourages cosmetic docking. Are English Bulldogs born with short tails? The shape straight or corkscrew of the tail is evident from a young age. What is tail docking? A few centuries ago, English Bulldog tail docking was done to protect them from injuries. However, today breeders could produce Bulldogs with naturally short tails through selective breeding, and docking English Bulldog tails was no longer necessary. These days, tail docking is mainly done for medical reasons. Back in the day, dog owners thought tail docking prevented rabies. Hunting dogs also had their tails cropped to avoid catching infections while running through vegetation. Today, many countries have banned docking. Only if your dog has a tail infection or disease would a vet consider docking its tail. Tail docking just for looks is a controversial practice banned in many countries. Are English Bulldog tails docked or cropped? While a purebred English Bulldog has a naturally short tail, there are instances when docking or cropping becomes a necessity. Infections, bone deformity, spinal issues, and ingrown tails are some medical conditions that warrant a tail amputation. English Bulldog tail types The English Bulldog comes in three tail varieties. While all three are natural tail shapes for these dogs, Kennel clubs have differing preferences for each. English Bulldog with long tail The long and sometimes wavy tail was an original Bulldog feature that has become extremely rare due to selective breeding. AKC considers long tails on English Bulldogs faulty. English bulldog corkscrew tail The corkscrew tail is the most preferred type in English Bulldogs; plus, the AKC considers this shape the breed standard. Due to these reasons, this shape is the most sought-after tail for breeders. Unfortunately, this tail is also most prone to health complications. Unlike corkscrew tails, the straight tail is much less prone to infections and diseases. The tail is broad at the base and tapers towards the tip. It may extend downwards or straight backward like a pump handle. Does it hurt a dog to have its tail cut off? If cutting the tail is unavoidable, a vet may perform surgical tail amputation using anesthetics. The USA, on the other hand, has no such prohibitions. While some states have considered presenting bills to outlaw cosmetic docking, there are no restrictions currently in place. Luckily, better awareness of animal rights has made people less inclined to hurt their dogs by chopping off their tails. English Bulldog tail problems Hygiene issues: English Bulldog tails are often tougher to keep clean. Infections: Poor hygiene can lead to several skin infections. Yeast infection and tail pocket infection are common among Bulldogs. Some of these require tail docking. Hemivertebrae: a congenital condition that is more prevalent in corkscrew tails and causes spinal problems. Handy Hint: Dog Grooming is an essential part of having dogs. English Bulldogs have very wrinkly skins with lots of folds. An English Bulldog tail pocket is an area of folded skin that develops under their tails and collects dirt, moisture, and germs. Are olde English Bulldogs born with tails? Yes, olde English bulldogs are always born with a tail. The Olde English Bulldog tail is usually much longer than its modern counterpart: the English Bulldog. Back in the day, Bulldogs had a full tail that reached the middle of their legs. A few decades ago, the Olde English Bulldog returned from extinction, complete with the original appearance and full tail. So, do Bulldogs have tails? As you can see, Bulldogs do have tails. But due to their tiny size, Bulldogs are sometimes categorized as tailless dogs. Some Bulldog breeds have naturally long tails, whereas some are preferred to have little tails. Nevertheless, tails play an essential role in helping the dog express its feeling and convey messages to others. Related Questions Why do they cut off Bulldogs tails? Bulldog tails are partially or completely cut off due to medical reasons. Do Bulldogs have their tails docked? In truth, the small tail on a Bulldog is perfectly natural. What breed of dog has no tail? French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, corgis, Schipperkes, Australian Stumpy-tail cattle dogs, Boston terriers, and Croatian sheepdogs are all born with a tiny tail and are considered tailless dogs. Always seek the advice of your veterinarian or other qualified health care provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Here are some shapes of Bulldog tails. Straight Tail When a Bulldog puppy is born, his tail is already starting to resemble what it will look like when he grows into an adult. According to the American Kennel Club, the straight tail and the corkscrew-shaped tails are the most desirable. It is broad at the base and tapers down to a short and triangular tip. Corkscrew Tail Like straight tails, corkscrew tails are also common in Bulldogs. From the base, corkscrew tails wrap downward. They should not extend upward. At birth, corkscrew tails look wrapped but are still flexible. The great news is the shape of Bulldog tails has no correlation with their wonderful personality. Caring for Bulldog Tails Bulldog tails and the surrounding area must always be kept clean —especially Bulldogs with corkscrew tails. Neglecting the tail and the rear end can cause future health problems such as infections and irritation. Wipe off debris and gunk using unscented baby wipes or damp washcloth. Then, dry the area with a soft absorbent tissue or towel. Keeping Bulldog tails and surrounding area clean by rinsing with warm water is also a good idea. Tail Removal in Bulldogs Bulldog tails may be removed but only if the veterinarian recommends so. This problem is often seen in Bulldogs with corkscrew tails. Unlike today, dogs in the past were bred for specific reasons to work around the home or the farm. Dogs generally spent the majority of their time outside. Today, while working dogs are still bred and used, over 60 million households have dogs, and these dogs are primarily for companionship. The English Bulldog is no exception. In the past, English Bulldogs were bred to be working dogs in specific conditions with certain tasks. Today, the English Bulldog is primarily bred as a loyal companion. English Bulldogs are meant to be friendly and affectionate companions that can keep you company in the home and are a buddy to go on evening walks together around the neighborhood. Bulldogs were originally bred as working farm dogs to help butchers control livestock. In the 15th century, they were used in a sport called bull-baiting, where they would run and attack a bull. Fortunately, this sport became illegal in .So, how does the history of the English Bulldog affect its tail shape today? The shorter the tail, the less risk of injury while working on a farm with livestock. The constant breeding of dogs with the shortest tail is why most English Bulldogs today have tiny tails. This shorter tail served bulldogs not only when it came to working on the farm but also during the sad and barbaric sport of bullbaiting. As with anything else, there are some owners that prefer the look of a certain tail type over another but any breeder that wants to compete or stay in business will need to breed bulldogs with their traditional short tail! For most dog breeds, there is only one tail type or one way the tail should look. On the other hand, the English Bulldog has three different uniquely shaped tails that they can be born with. English Bulldogs most often have three different tail types: Straight tails Corkscrew tails Long or wavy tails An English Bulldog can be born with a long tail, but tail shape and size depend on their breeding. In most cases, any English Bulldog with a long tail would mean that it was cross-bred with a different breed with a long tail. Straight Tails Straight tails are one of the most common English Bulldog tails. They look exactly as the name implies! Straight tails are wider at the base and hang down, eventually tapering to a point. These tails are straight and very short. Out of all the English Bulldog tail types, the straight tail is the most desirable. Corkscrew Tails Corkscrew tails are twisted into the shape of a corkscrew or bun, and they sit very close and tight against the body. While this may look cute to some people, this corkscrew shape results from an abnormal deviation of the vertebrae. In puppies, this tail type starts as very flexible. As the dog ages, it becomes a rigid, solidified shape that stays close and tight next to the body. This curly tail type is not accepted as part of the American Kennel Club breed standard. Even though this tail type is considered a breed fault by the AKC, many breeders argue that this tail type is much healthier than the corkscrew type. While the English Bulldog has an especially curly tail, there are plenty of breeds with a curly tail. Unfortunately, even though corkscrew tails meet the breed standard, they can cause many problems for dogs. The natural friction from movement can lead to infections and inflammation. The tight formation of the tail also creates the perfect warm and damp environment for bacteria to grow. Since this tail is so rigid, it can be challenging to clean. Infected skin in this area is commonly referred to as a tail fold pyoderma. This skin infection is often treated with antibiotics. Unfortunately, antibiotics can only do so much. Sometimes, the only way to solve a recurring tail fold pyoderma is to amputate the entire tail surgically. Spinal Column Malformations Since the corkscrew shape tail on an English Bulldog stems from a deviation of their last vertebrae, this puts them at an increased risk of spinal column malformations. Nerves are not enclosed in the spinal cord and are left exposed. The lower back is most commonly affected, though any part of the spine can be affected. Puppies will have strange hindlimb weakness and a stumbling gait. Radiographs x-rays can be taken to confirm the incomplete vertebrae. In these severe cases in puppies, the puppy is most often humanely euthanized because there is no treatment. Though it is invasive and costly, mild cases can be treated with reconstructive surgery. No treatment is necessary in those cases of older dogs previously not exhibiting any symptoms indicating pain. This condition is often present at birth; unfortunately, even with surgical management, most of these patients continue to have neurological deficits. Tails provide several benefits to dogs that help them in their everyday life. If you look at different dog breeds, they all have different types of tails. Sighthounds have long whip-like tails that allow them to counterbalance when they change direction during high-speed runs. Labrador Retrievers and other water dogs have long, thick tails that they can use as a rudder to help them change direction and move quickly when swimming. Siberian Huskies have thick, fluffy tails that they can use to cover their face to stay warm when they sleep at night. But the English Bulldog just has a little nub…so does this slow them down in the world of dogs? Not really! Dogs also use their tails as a communication tool! Since dogs are a nonverbal species, they use body language to communicate. A happy dog is likely to wag its tail loosely, but a scared dog may tuck their tail between its legs. How a dog moves its tail can tell a lot about its feelings. Researchers were so convinced that dogs intentionally communicate with their tails that they decided to study it. One study showed that dogs wagging their tail to the left were anxious or insecure, while dogs wagging their tail to the right were relaxed and comfortable. A tail pocket on an English Bulldog is an area of folded skin that develops under their tails and collects dirt and moisture. Bulldogs are prone to getting this tail pocket due to their excessive folded skin. Are English Bulldog Tails Docked? Tail docking originated in Ancient Roman times to prevent the spread of rabies and to prevent injuries. Later, when pet taxes were implemented, working dogs were exempt from those taxes. Today, tail docking is considered an outdated practice only done for cosmetic reasons. Many breeders want it done solely to provide a specific look to their dog. Most veterinarians believe tail docking for cosmetic reasons is unnecessary and refuse to do it. In fact, tail docking has legal restrictions in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Both Maryland and Pennsylvania state laws only allow veterinarians to perform the surgery if it is medically appropriate. Similarly, it is illegal in all of the UK unless it is deemed medically necessary. English Bulldogs do have shorter tails than most dogs, but their tails are like that naturally and are not docked- unlike other breeds like Rotties and Boxers. Surgical tail amputation is always considered a last resort to resolve a medical issue. In some cases, English Bulldogs with corkscrew tails may require surgical amputation to resolve a recurring tail fold pyoderma issue. Final Thoughts For many reasons, English Bulldogs have become one of the most popular dog breeds. Their tails are much shorter than most dog breeds, which can also make you wonder if their tails are docked. Today, tail docking is widely viewed as an outdated procedure, and most veterinarians will only perform a surgical tail amputation if it is medically necessary. Unlike most dog breeds that are born with a straight, flowing tail, English Bulldogs are born with one of three tail types: straight, corkscrew, or curly. While corkscrew-shaped tails are standard for English Bulldogs and a part of the accepted AKC breed standard, the corkscrew shape results from the last few vertebrae being deformed, unfortunately, this can lead to many medical issues. Corkscrew-shaped tail types will require regular cleaning to prevent infection. Hopefully, since the straight tail is acceptable in the breed standard, more breeders will begin to breed for this tail type that is much healthier for the English Bulldog! German Shepherds are large dogs so naturally, eat larger portions than smaller breeds. They are active dogs and need lots of protein and energy to keep them healthy. Choosing a selection results in a full page refresh. So, how many times a day should you feed your German Shepherd? German Shepherds should be fed at least twice a day. Vets recommend two smaller meals instead of one large meal for healthy digestion and energy. For puppies, feed 4 meals a day up to three months old, then 3 meals a day up to six months old, before finally reducing to 2 meals a day. It is essential to stick to food schedules that are consistent for the long-term health of your German Shepherd, especially as the breed is prone to the life-threatening condition, Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus GDV , commonly known as bloat. This article will cover how often to feed a German Shepherd whether puppy or adult and how much to give your dog to keep him healthy and happy. Hey there! My German Shepherd Willow eating her meal Hey! As a working breed raised to herd and protect sheep, they are typically energetic, enjoy physical activity, and love having a job to do. Due to their dynamic character, they demand a high-energy diet. However, as large, deep-chested dogs, they are one of the breeds prone to bloat GDV , and vets advise against feeding one large meal a day. Twice per day is the standard, with a good few hours in between, as it allows your GSD to eat and digest his food properly. German Shepherds, like most dogs, work well when fed on a schedule. I absolutely agree with this, especially as the German Shepherd is susceptible to a sensitive stomach and is known to have more digestive problems than other breeds. However, if you have any concerns, you should speak to your vet. If you have a high-energy or working German Shepherd, such as a guard dog, assistance dog, or Police or Military dog that gets a lot of exercise, you may consider feeding little and often to prevent hunger. German Shepherd Puppy Feeding Schedule German Shepherd puppies will require more frequent feedings as they expend far more energy and have smaller stomachs to hold their food. You should feed a German Shepherd puppy four meals a day between 6 and 12 weeks old. Puppies aged between 12 and 24 weeks should have three meals a day, and from 24 weeks onwards, German Shepherd puppies should be fed twice per day. Age of Puppy. Split that daily amount up between all meals. For example, if your 3-month-old GSD puppy is a male and weighs 30 pounds, you should feed him approximately 2 cups per day. Since she no longer needs the extra calories to help support her fast growth period, you can safely reduce her feedings to 2 or 3 meals per day. While she should still be eating puppy food at this point, you may consider purchasing a bag of her eventual adult formula. You can use individual kibbles from the adult formula for treats or training rewards. This will help her get used to the new flavor and texture. Around 9 months of age, you can begin slowly adding a small amount of the adult formula into her puppy food, though she should still be eating primarily puppy chow. Only your vet will be able to tell you when your dog has reached maturity and can be safely moved to adult food. So, make sure you are in close contact with your vet to be sure that your feeding plan is individualized for your specific dog. Adult dog food will have a different ratio of calcium, protein, phosphorus, and other nutrients than puppy food does. Feeding an adult dog a puppy formula can cause obesity as well as put too much strain on kidneys and other vital organs. Long term use of inappropriate food for an adult dog can have catastrophic consequences. That said, there is no need to panic if your adult GSD eats a bowl of puppy food now and then. Adult German Shepherds should be fed twice a day. Again, bloat is a real problem for large breed dogs, and large meals seem to be a big cause of this. I feed my adult dogs this particular blend for a number of reasons. The blend is designed specifically with German Shepherds in mind, as it uses high-quality, animal-based nutrients to counter the extra stress put on the joints of GSDs and to help the development strong lean muscle to keep your dog in peak physical condition. You really can see the difference. This is evident by the fast decline in health, joint flexibility, and energy in older large breed dogs compared to same-age smaller breeds. When your GSD moves from the adult life stage to senior, you need to adjust her diet. Large breeds reach the older stage not quite senior, but close around half of their assumed life expectancy. Inevitably, your GSD will need to switch over to a senior diet. Older large breed dogs have lower energy needs. Older dogs also tend to slow down their digestion, so an increase in fiber might be a good choice for your senior GSD. Do be sure to confirm this with your vet, however. Not all foods are created equal. For treats, senior dogs should avoid calorie-dense milk bones and high-salt or fatty treats. Opt for healthy, whole-food treats such as apple slices or carrots. Some senior dogs begin to develop health conditions that will require special care. This is often a result of poor nutrition early in life, but can sometimes simply be genetics and old age catching up with them. But for GSDs with health issues such as kidney disease and joint pain, diet can play an even bigger role in the quality of their lives. Getting a personalized recommendation from your veterinarian is worth the time, expense, and effort. These charts can seem pretty straightforward at first glance. Instead, use them as a starting point. Observe your dog, see how he looks and feels, and note any changes in his bathroom habits, weight, or energy level. Adjust his meals accordingly. Generally speaking, they talk about daily intake, not per meal. It means to split that 3 cups total over the entire day. If your dog eats 3 times per day, that would be 1 cup at each meal for a total daily intake of 3 cups. To further confuse dog parents, some manufacturers do list per-meal serving sizes, not the total daily intake! In these cases, if you read it incorrectly, you would end up underfeeding your dog. To help mitigate some of this confusion, it may be helpful to ask your vet how many calories your dog should be consuming each day. Then you can check the calorie content in the dog food and measure things from there. Raw Diets, Cooking for Dogs, and Other Alternative Feeding This article has been focusing mainly on commercially available dry kibble since that is what most pet parents ultimately choose for their dogs. However, there are many dog owners that choose to feed alternative diets. These include raw diets and cooking regular people food for dogs. There are many viable options for feeding your healthy German Shepherd, but there are just as many harmful fads, too. As with commercial foods, be sure to speak with your vet before starting your dog on a raw diet or home-cooking her meals. Human supplements are often unregulated, minimally effective, and often contain substances harmful to animals. Never use a human supplement for your German Shepherd. Final Thoughts What you feed your German Shepherd is just as important as how much you feed them. Pay special attention to the first 4 or 5 ingredients listed on the back of the packaging. Choose high-quality, safety-tested foods with clear ingredient and nutrition labels. The two most obvious goals of feeding your German Shepherd are for health and growth. How fast do German Shepherds grow? German Shepherds are medium-large dogs and therefore grow at a fast rate over the first six to seven months leading up to adolescence. Adult German Shepherds are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50 to 95 pounds. Reputable weight charts suggest your German Shepherd puppy will have attained three-quarters of their final weight over these first six to seven months. This is A LOT of growing to do in a short amount of time — when you brought your puppy home, it was probably only eight inches tall and weighed around 15 pounds. By 12 to 15 months old, a German Shepherd is within an inch or less of their adult height. Therefore, your male German Shepherd will be 23 to 25 inches tall and weigh 59 to 93 pounds by his first birthday. How does diet affect the health of growing Shepherds? Recently it has come to light that a proper diet for puppies does more than prevent malnutrition. As part of this proper diet, there are many things that should never be fed to German Shepherds. Orthopedic Problems Many orthopedic problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia have a strong hereditary component. However, people often discount the role of diet in bone developmental issues. Merely creating an oversized puppy, as is often the case for show animals and people fixated on large dogs, can lead to several painful disorders: Hip dysplasia Elbow dysplasia Panosteitis — Generalized inflammation of the long bones in puppies; common in German Shepherds. Overnutrition and over-supplementation of certain vitamins and minerals lead to paradoxical malnutrition of the bone, and subsequently improper development. Nutritional experts have modified their recommendations regarding the diets of large-breed dogs. Many nutritionists and veterinarians advocate feeding German Shepherds and other large-breed puppies an adult or professionally-formulated homemade diet to limit the occurrence and severity of developmental problems. Pet food manufacturers have caught onto the concept of overnutrition in puppies, and most carry special diets for large-breed puppies. Also, do not supplement your puppy with vitamins, minerals, or proteins without veterinarian direction — their excessive use will disrupt bone and cartilage growth and harm the growth plates. Many people use the food bag as a starting point to decide how much to feed their dogs. However, a label on commercial food is one of the easiest ways to overfeed your growing puppy. Feeding your puppy involves regularly evaluating and tracking their weight. You should be able to assess how close your pup is to their ideal weight just by looking at them. Silhouette from the side — a slight tuck. Pat the ribcage where the abdomen slightly lifts towards the hips. From above — Clear waist; should see an hourglass shape from rib cage to hips When you palpate — You should feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat without having to prod very hard. Puppies will vary in their body scores and may change rapidly within a few days. Pups often lose their abdominal tuck right after a meal. Puppies under 16 weeks old commonly have a pot-bellied appearance without much abdominal tuck. Thin dogs will show more visibility of ribs, waist, and pelvis without appearing emaciated or unhealthy. If your puppy eats well but fails to grow or gain sufficient weight, consult a medical professional. German Shepherds can be susceptible to rare cases of pituitary gland dwarfism or a deficiency of enzyme production from the pancreas. Volume The easiest way to determine how much food to give your Shepherd pup is to figure out how many cups they need in a day and divide it by the number of feedings. German Shepherds eat about four cups of food daily from 16 weeks of age to nine months or a year regardless of weight. The volume accounts for the relatively high caloric requirements of the young growing animal. German Shepherds over a year old may need as much as five to eight cups of dog food. Other references, however, use weight rather than age. Pups eat one cup of food daily per 15 to 20 pounds. Dogs over pounds receive five cups of kibble plus an additional half a cup for every extra 20 pounds. Like all models, more active dogs need to eat more food — make adjustments up or down based on body scoring. You can estimate the volume to feed your German Shepherd pup once you find the conversion rate. Dry dog food bags and wet food cans usually have the kilocalorie equivalence of each cup of the product. The number of calories you feed your Shepherd depends on how close to the adult weight they are. Once your puppy reaches six weeks old, you may still have to feed it a mash but can decrease meals to four per day. German Shepherd puppies between the ages of 12 and 16 weeks can eat three to four times daily, while most dogs over four months of age decrease to a frequency of two to three times daily. Centering a few potty breaks around meals that stimulate their intestinal tracts helps develop consistent habits. GDV Your German Shepherd puppy will begin to develop a deeper chest combined with significant size by four to six months of age. Both physical characteristics put your puppy at additional risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus compared to smaller breeds. Four months is the age at which most pups will see a significant increase in their meal sizes. Studies have linked large meals with GDV , or bloat, life-threatening distension, and rotation of the stomach. Increasing the number of feedings greatly reduces the incidence of GDV. We recommend at least two meals a day for your dog, even as your Shepherd approaches adulthood. How much to feed a German Shepherd puppy is part of a broader equation that includes avoiding overfeeding, calculating portion sizes, and scheduling appropriate mealtimes. However, a fat or pudgy puppy is not a look anyone should encourage. The puppy may appear to be in good shape, but you need to feel the ribs to be certain. Four Months You can really start to see the amount the pup has grown compared to the eight-week-old puppy! To get a better idea of what to expect with a young GSD, feel free to watch this video! It illustrates the rapid growth rate of the German Shepherd and touches on diets as well. Recommended reading.

blue buffalo for french bulldog puppy - Breeders vs rescue dogs A Combined History Mixing dog breeds is not a new thing. In fact, cross-breeding has been around for centuries. But, it takes many years to create a distinct breed that is recognized and registered. Designer dogs are typically named based on the breeds used for mating. Border Collies and Labradors are both intelligent working dogs. They have been selectively bred for generations to choose dogs that are driven as well as cooperative, but in slightly different ways. Border Collies are a traditional herding breed mostly used by sheep farmers to control their unruly flocks. Labradors on the other hand spend more time waiting than working, then have bursts of energy fetching fallen birds over long distances and tricky terrain. Like many of the other designer breeds, the Borador has come into existence within the last 10 to 20 years in North America. By mixing the lovable Labrador with the hard-working Border Collie, breeders hoped to get the best of both worlds — an intelligent, energetic, and people-oriented dog that suits almost any role. Most Labradors are quite a bit bigger than Border Collies. But, your mix could fall anywhere between the sizes of its parents. Most Borador dogs will be somewhere between 40 and 60 pounds. Females are usually smaller than males. While Labradors are seen with a solid yellow, brown, or black coat, this mix often takes on the distinct dual or tri-coloring of the Border Collie. You could also end up with a beautiful black Lab Border Collie mix. Black is a dominant coat color, so the black Lab Border Collie mix is one of the most common colors. This can be in a plain form, or bi-color pattern, such as a white and black Lab Border Collie mix. Grooming and Shedding The Border Collie parent can have long or short fur. Labs will have short dense fur. Your Borador mix could be anywhere inbetween. Both parent dogs are known to shed all year round, and heavily during hotter seasons. So, expect to find lots of fur around your home if you own one. Use a bristle or pin brush for grooming once or twice a week and use a slicker brush to remove any mats that you see. Especially if your dog spends a lot of time exercising outdoors. You may need to groom more frequently when shedding is at its heaviest. Border Collie Lab Mix Temperament These dogs can inherit some very unique and positive personality traits from their parent breeds. For starters, Collies are extremely intelligent. According to studies completed by the American Psychological Association, the dogs have the same mental abilities as a two to two-and-a-half-year-old child. While Labradors may act more like toddlers, and have a good deal of smarts themselves, what really stands out about them is their kindness, happiness, and generally easy-going attitudes. Socialization Early socialization is hugely important if you want to raise a healthy, happy, outgoing dog. This process involves exposing your puppy to other dogs and to different people when they are young. It is done so that your dog will not be fearful or aggressive around new people or dogs. Ideally, socialization should begin when your puppy is between 3 and 14 weeks of age. Luckily, both the Border Collie and Labrador are known for their easy, kind temperament, so you should find this process easy and effective. Training Both Labradors and Border Collies are dogs with high levels of intelligence. So, a Borador is likely to become bored and disruptive if not properly entertained. Training can go a long way to help with this. There are various programs that can help you with training. Keep in mind that studies show that positive reinforcement or reward based training are best for your dog. Not only is it highly effective, but it reduces the incidence of problem behaviors and anxiety issues. Borador Energy Levels It should not come as a surprise that the Border Collie Lab mix also needs a fair amount of exercise. They are extremely active dogs that love to run, play, and exert energy for hours each day. The Lab part of the mix typically calms down the hyperactive nature of the Border Collie. But, it depends entirely on the traits they inherit. Some Borador mixes will still have strong herding instincts and could even try to herd young kids or other pets in the house! Border Collie and Labrador Health All dogs are at risk of certain illnesses. The Borador is no exception. Here are some health problems that potential owners should be aware of: Hip dysplasia. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Also known as a borador, or border Lab, this energetic and clever mix combines the best traits of its parent breeds. If you are looking for an affectionate and lively companion dog that loves children and can keep up with your active lifestyle, check out the border Lab! Medium to large in size, these pups are best suited for active families and homes with access to securely fenced backyards. Take this to heart. We had a borador who was an absolute escape artist. He found his way out of our backyard and to the local park on nearly a daily basis. This exceptionally smart mix craves attention and needs a lot of mental stimulation to stay on the best behavior. When bored or left to their own devices, border Labs can become destructive and resort to chewing or digging just to have fun. If you want an outgoing, eager-to-please, loyal, and smart mixed-breed dog for your family, read on! Border Collie Lab Overview Size — 19 to 24 inches tall, weighs between 40 and 65 pounds Coat — Short to medium-long double coat, color varies Shedding — Moderate to heavy shedding Lifespan — 10 to 15 years Temperament — Eager-to-please, outgoing, clever, and energetic Trainable — Highly trainable but can become bored if not mentally stimulated Activity — Very active needs around one to two hours of activity every day Best For — Active families and people, and homes with outdoor space What Is A Labrador Border Collie Mix? As you may have guessed, the Labrador border collie mix is a cross-breed created by mixing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred border collie. While both parent breeds are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, the borador is considered a designer dog breed. Border Collie And Lab Mix Appearance Like all other mixed-breed dogs, no two border Labs are the same and there is no way of knowing exactly what you will get when mixing a border collie and a Lab. Most, however, have a Lab-like build, although they are on the thin side. When it comes to the head and general features, this mix takes more after the Labrador, but they do have the slightly pointed nose of a border collie. However, nothing is set in stone, and the only thing you can do is wait and see how your border collie and Lab mix puppy will grow up to be. With that being said, there are some things you can expect from your mixed breed, mainly when it comes to size and coat color. Size As a mix between Labrador retriever and border collie dog breeds, expect your border Lab to be a medium to large size dog. Most border collie Lab mixes are between 19 and 24 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. There are yellow, brown, black, and fox red Labrador retrievers , but border collies come in many different colors and markings. Most border Labs have brown, black, or tan coats and white markings like their border collie parent. The amount of white fur varies greatly from one borador to the next, with some dogs having completely solid coats and others having several white markings. Coat Depending on which parent they take after, boradors can have short to medium-long coats. Having a double coat means your Lab mix is going to shed moderately all year round, and lose more hair during the shedding season. Most border Labs are outgoing and people-loving dogs that make amazing family pets. In fact, this mix is so friendly that they will likely meet everyone with a wagging tail. They generally become fast friends with children and are very gentle with them. However, thanks to their border collie ancestry, some boradors may try to herd and nip smaller children or other pets. If your mix exhibits this trait, know you can curb their nipping tendencies with training and positive reinforcement. As an offspring of the border collie — the smartest dog breed in the world — the borador tends to be pretty smart as well. Aim to take your border collie Lab mix for at least two long walks every day and also include several playing sessions throughout the day. Games such as fetch, tug-of-war, hide and seek, and flyball are some great ways to exercise your borador and keep it mentally stimulated. Our Border Lab mix, Maffy was high, high, high energy. Obviously inherited from the Border Collie side of the equation. However, a Lab is no slouch when it comes to energy level. Caring For A Borador As with any other dog, you should develop a care routine as soon as you bring a border collie Lab mix puppy home. Exercise Ideally, boradors need around one or two hours of exercise every day. Activities such as running, swimming, jogging, cycling, and hiking are just some ways you can keep your mix exercised and in good shape. Boradors also excel at agility, which is a great way to keep your dog both physically and mentally challenged at the same time. Intellectual Stimulation Since they are very smart, border Labs do best with lots of mental stimulation. If not properly challenged, your mix will become destructive and turn to digging and chewing to relieve boredom. A word of caution, a bored Lab border collie mix might be a recipe for disaster! You might return home from work only to find your shoes, pillows, or carpets chewed and shredded to pieces. Invest in durable chews, interesting puzzle toys to stimulate your dog , and spend some time every day interacting and playing with your pooch to keep them mentally stimulated. Our Border Lab got into all kinds of trouble in the yard digging holes and hiding treats throughout the yard. Another game he enjoyed playing was dropping his ball into the swimming pool. Then wait till it floats to the middle then jump in after it. Without mental stimulation Boradors definitely invent their own games. Companionship Eager-to -lease, loving, and friendly border Labs are true companions and are happy as long as they are involved in all family activities. These dogs crave attention and companionship, and they are best suited for homes where there is someone who can spend a better part of the day playing and interacting with them. When left at home alone a lot, this mix can develop separation anxiety and become destructive. Grooming When compared to other Lab mixes, the borador is a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Although they shed moderately all year round, their coats are easy to groom and need to be brushed two times a week. Brushing your mix regularly with a slicker brush will help you remove loose hair and keep the shedding to a minimum. Diet An ideal diet for a border Lab should be formulated for medium to large size dogs with high energy. Make sure to feed your mix with age-appropriate high-quality dog food that contains all essential micro and macronutrients. Avoid free feeding your mix and set up a regular feeding schedule to prevent obesity and health problems associated with it. Although border Labs are generally healthy, they are prone to some of the same health problems that affect Labrador retrievers and border collies. This can be extremely painful for a dog, causing arthritis, difficulty walking, and lameness later in life. Collie Eye Anomaly: This is a congenital eye disease that occurs in border collies and affects the retina, sclera, and choroid. CEA is caused by a recessive gene defect and can be a mild condition or cause blindness. Hypothyroidism: This is a condition in which the thyroid gland is no longer able to produce the hormone thyroxine. Life Expectancy The border Lab has an average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. When properly cared for and taken to regular veterinary checkups, some boradors can reach senior years completely healthy. We had a Border Collie Lab mix that we rescued from our local animal shelter. They told us he was approximately 2 years old when we rescued him. He lived with us for 18 years! Add on the approximately 2 years he lived before he came to our home he lived a whopping 20 years! True to their parent breeds, border Labs are eager to please and very intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. Like all other dogs, the Lab border collie mix responds well to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Start training and socializing your borador puppy as soon as you bring them home when they are eight to 12 weeks old. While your pup might seem small, you can start potty training and teach them basic commands. Border Labs make truly wonderful companions and pets to active people or families with children. Couch potatoes be warned; this designer hybrid needs a lot of exercise and will keep you on your toes. Due to their energetic nature and high exercise needs, boradors need a home with access to a fenced yard where they can run around and play. Buying A Border Collie And Lab Mix Puppy If you want to purchase a border collie and Lab mix puppy, find a reputable breeder and schedule an appointment to visit their facilities. A reputable breeder will let you meet the mother and all the puppies. Check your local shelter and rescue groups to see if they have any border Labs. You can also contact Labrador retriever and border collie breed-specific rescue groups since they often take care of mixed-breed dogs too. History Of The Breeds Labrador Retriever One of the most popular dog breeds in the world, the Labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland where they helped fishermen catch fish. Universally loved for their kind, friendly, fun, and loyal nature, Labs make great family pets and companions. Highly intelligent, gentle, and eager-to-please, Labrador retrievers are favored as service dogs and are often seen assisting people with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Border Collie Developed in the border country between Scotland and England, the border collie is a working and herding dog breed. Originally bred to herd sheep, border collies are a highly intelligent and very trainable dog breed. Naturally athletic and energetic, border collies need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and thrive. Boradors are good companions and amazing pets to active people and families with children. They tend to be friendly, loving, eager-to-please, and smart, which makes training fairly easy even for novice owners. As long as they are properly exercised and provided with the attention they need, border Labs make wonderful pets. Are boradors aggressive? Boradors are rarely aggressive towards people or other dogs and tend to greet everyone with a wagging tail. Inherently friendly and kind, the collie Lab mix gets along well with children with whom they become fast friends. How much does a border collie Lab mix cost? Conclusion Extremely clever, eager-to-please, and friendly, the border collie Lab mix makes a great pet for active people and families with children. True to its parent breeds, this mix has a lot of energy and needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation, otherwise, they can become bored and destructive. If you are looking for a friendly and energetic dog to adopt into the family, then the Borador, which is a mix between a Labrador retriever and a border collie, might be a perfect choice! Attractive, intelligent, and friendly to a fault, these dogs have the perfect temperament for playing at home with the kids or accompanying their parents on epic adventures. However, they do need lots of love and attention to thrive. While there exists a diverse range of different types of Boradors, the most popular mix is between a black Labrador and a border collie. This typically results in a distinctive and sleek black pup, often with white accents. Always consider heading to your local shelter before purchasing a pup. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Boradors and decide whether they are the perfect pup to join your home. The breed was established in the s and has been one of the most popular dog breeds in the Western world ever since. Their friendly nature, intelligence, and eagerness to please make them ideal working dogs, and you will often see Labs in service dog roles such as disability assistance. Their composure makes them the ideal dog to accompany their owners into public spaces, though they are known as big shedders. The border collie is a herding dog that was developed along the Anglo-Scottish border. It was officially recognized as a breed in .Border collies are both intelligent and athletic, which has made them favorites as sports dogs, particularly in sheepdog trials. It is believed that initial combinations of Labs and border collies were probably accidental, but breeders soon realized the combination made for a very desirable mix. While all kinds of Borador mixes exist, the most popular mix is between black Labradors and border collies, creating distinctive-looking black dogs with white accents. The term is not generally used for accidents, but rather specifically for these designer dogs that are emerging. However, it is important to differentiate between crossbreeds and pure breeds. Pure breeds tend to pass down physical and character traits in a very predictable way, making it possible to define the breed. When it comes to crossbred dogs, though, there is less consistency in the way characteristics manifest. It is possible to generalize to an extent about what to expect from a crossbred dog, and breeders do control for characteristics as much as possible. Luckily, when it comes to Boradors, you are working with two incredibly intelligent and friendly breeds, so the result always tends to be something special. Borador Appearance Labrador and border collie mixes are medium-to-large-sized dogs that tend to fall somewhere between the size of their two parents. Breeders typically make sure the mother is larger so they have no trouble passing the baby pups. Labradors tend to be between .They usually weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Border collies are a bit smaller, reaching between 18 and 22 inches in height and weighing between 30 and 55 pounds. They tend to have a longer muzzle and a leaner physique, though this is not always easy to see through their medium-length hair. As a result, you can expect a Borador to be between 19 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. Remember, you can get a better idea of the potential height and weight of a puppy by looking at their parents. Most Borador pups tend to have the slightly heavier build of the Labrador, though they are usually a little on the thin side. They also tend to have the broad face of their Lab parent, though with a longer, more pointed nose. You can usually expect your Borador puppy to be a mix of whatever color their parents were. Most puppies take on the more solid black color of their Lab parent coupled with the white markings of their border collie parent. So, if you are mixing a black Lab with a border collie, you can expect a mostly black dog with white accents. Boradors typically have a double coat that will either look like the short hair of a Labrador retriever or the medium-length hair of a border collie. Regardless of their coat color, your Borador will shed quite a lot, as both Labradors and border collies are known for their high-shedding coats. Borador Personality Labradors and border collies have a lot of personality traits in common, so the characters and temperaments of Boradors are relatively easy to predict. First and foremost, both breeds are considered to be highly intelligent. They can both learn new things quickly, and they are also able to think independently. This allows them to adapt to new situations and determine what is expected of them, even if they have not been provided with specific instructions. But unlike very independent dogs that can be difficult to train due to their stubbornness, both Labradors and border collies were bred to work alongside humans. This has made them very eager to please, which makes training through reward and positive reinforcement highly effective. This is also why Labradors can be trained to complete the complex tasks required of a guide dog for the blind and why border collies can be trained to deliver elaborate tricks in a sporting dog competition. You can expect a Borador to be highly trainable as well. Both dogs tend to be friendly with strangers and other animals rather than territorial. They are more likely to be curious and keen to make friends than raise the alarm. This quality makes Boradors great companions but not very effective guard dogs. Their affectionate nature tends to be particularly notable with children, around whom they are instinctively careful. It is generally considered safe to let Labradors and border collies play with small children, though they should be supervised at all times in case of any mishaps. This can involve giving them a nip that is designed to surprise rather than hurt. Fortunately, they can easily be trained out of this behavior if you notice it and implement corrective training early on. While they can safely be left alone for up to four or five hours at a time, they can develop anxiety if they are left alone for long periods of time while everyone in the household is off working. You can expect them to respond with destructive behaviors, such as digging and chewing. This is not done out of vengeance but rather boredom or frustration. Finally, these dogs are very energetic, and they need lots of exercise. Ideally, they should get at least an hour of activity each day, spread out over two shorter sessions. They will also love to accompany you on weekend field trips and hiking adventures. Due to their size and energy levels, Boradors do best when they have a big home with a nice backyard to play in. While they can be trained to put up with apartment living as long as they have regular opportunities to stretch their legs, it is not the ideal environment for them to thrive in. Borador Health Risks You can expect a Borador to have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years, which is respectable for a dog of their size. While they are generally healthy dogs, they are at risk of some health conditions. In particular, they may develop elbow or hip dysplasia, which is a painful malformation of the joints that can make movement difficult, especially as they get older. Boradors are less likely to develop this condition if they get sufficient exercise and have a healthy diet. An orthopedic bed will also give them a lot of comfort in late life. Boradors are susceptible to a variety of different eye conditions that can cause them to partially lose their sight in later years. This can be highly disorienting for them, but they can still feel comfortable in a familiar home where they know where everything is. Finally, Boradors can also be prone to obesity, as they have little control over their hunger hormones. This is why it is imperative that they get enough exercise and that you monitor their calorie intake, reducing or increasing portions as required. Never leave food out for these dogs; they do best with strict and limited meal times. With all that information in mind, you might still be wondering whether a Borador is the right dog for you. Here are a few questions to consider when making your decision. A Borador can actually be a great dog for first-time owners. They are easy to train and they have a friendly temperament, so you are unlikely to find yourself dealing with an aggressive or troublesome dog. A Borador will want to be part of the family and involved in everything. You also need to invest time in exercising them and teaching them, as they need the mental stimulation of training. Do you have time to look after a dog like this? If so, the Borador is likely a good choice. How Big Is Your Home? Boradors are pretty big dogs with lots of energy, so they do best when they have quite a bit of space. Will your home feel full with a inch-tall dog wandering about? Additionally, do you have an outdoor space where they can let off energy when needed? When you bring a Borador puppy home, you can expect them to live for anywhere from 10 to 15 or more years. Can you handle the responsibility of caring for them for that time, including the financial responsibility of caring for them? Do you have people who can look after them when you go away or in case of an emergency? Dog ownership is a big responsibility, regardless of the breed you adopt. Yes, Boradors are considered very good dogs, especially if you are looking for a loyal and fairly easy to manage family dog. They are highly intelligent, very trainable, and bond with families quickly. Boradors are high-energy and need a lot of attention, so they are best for families that have time to enjoy them. How smart are border collie Lab mixes? Both border collies and Labrador retrievers are considered among the smartest dog breeds, alongside the likes of poodles and German shepherds. As a result, you can expect crossbreeds that bring together their genetics to be highly intelligent. How much does a border collie Lab mix cost? Can Boradors swim? Labrador retrievers are known for their love of playing and swimming in water, so there is a good chance their Borador offspring will also love a good swim. If they have the longer coat of their border collie parent, just beware of the amount of water that they are likely to drip after a swim! When is a Borador fully grown? Boradors actually remain playful puppies for quite some time and can take quite a long time to reach their full size. You can expect females to reach their full adult size when they hit around 24 months, while males take a bit longer and are not fully grown until around 36 months. While the dogs will also lose most of their puppy energy upon reaching adulthood, they will remain energetic and athletic dogs for most of their lives. The Verdict If you are a first-time dog owner or anyone looking for a friendly, intelligent, and easy to manage dog to adopt into your family, a Borador is a great choice. Since their Labrador and border collie parents are both intelligent, trainable, and friendly dogs, their offspring are sure to inherit these wonderful traits. Overall, the Borador crossbreed is: High-energy and needs plenty of space to feel comfortable Agreeable, friendly, and loyal, though they are prone to developing separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time Quite large dogs, like their Labrador and border collie parents While Boradors are generally easy to manage, they also need quite a bit of your time and dedication to stay happy. Take time to consider whether you have the time to look after one of these pups properly before taking them home. Do you have any experience with Boradors? blue buffalo for french bulldog puppy - Stick to softer surfaces, like grass and dirt paths, while your pup is young and their bones are not fully fused. Most GSD owners simply want to take train their puppy to walk on a leash in the neighborhood and park without getting pulled down the street. There are three basic ways to communicate how you want your German Shepherd puppy to walk on a leash with you: the stopping method, the turning method, and the luring method. The Stopping Method Open the door, but only open the door if your dog is sitting. This step could take some time and practice. Once you both are out the door, have your dog sit again. You need to lock the door and your dog needs to sit for this. During your walk, have your dog sit for you at various times. When he does offer a tasty, high value, quick-to-eat treat. Now immediately start walking again and give the release cue. Stand still and wait until he sits. This could take a while. This is important, especially because one day your little pup will be large enough to injure you if they pull you along on the walk wildly! This will take lots of time and patience. But setting a strong and obedient walk foundation allows you to enjoy your walks more and maintain control over your large breed dog as they mature and grow stronger. The Turning Method Use the same steps as above to get outside your house and begin your walk, except instead of stopping and waiting on your dog, turn in the opposite direction and begin walking the other way. Quietly turn around and guide them along when they get a few steps ahead of you. You may also tire of turning. But stick with it. Either of these techniques takes plenty of patience and a strong mental character. But your dog loves to learn. Their mind is like a sponge at this young age, but they also lack obedience skills and an attention span. Use treats and toys to get your dog to follow you. The Treat Luring Method: Hold the treat at their eye level in front of them so they can see and smell the treat. Take one or two steps forward, having them follow the treat with their nose and eyes. They will probably keep following the treat. She loves them! Take a couple of steps forward while squeaking the toy. As they follow, keep stepping forward and squeaking the toy. After a few successful steps forward, let them play with the toy as their reward. Keep up this game to motivate them to follow you. Eventually, your dog gains confidence in their new surroundings and with your help and will walk on their own. Never allow your dog to run loose near traffic. Never unleash your dog in a new area. Never allow your dog to eat objects found on the ground. They could be poisonous! Never think a person running or someone on a bicycle sees your little pup. Puppies are quick moving and can dart in front of a moving person causing them to trip and fall. This can also injure your dog as they may fall on top of them or kick or step on them. Pup is distracted Remember that being outside with your dog is equivalent to you going to Disney Land! Give them a chance to develop their attention skills, or use the high value treats to make them pay attention to you. If you are limited in the places you can go, choose different routes so your dog gets to experience new smells and sights. Beginners often have a lot of questions: how long should they walk with a German Shepherd, how often should they do it, and what are the rules of feeding and vaccination. Therefore, before the responsible purchase, it is important to get acquainted with the nuances of ownership. At what age can you walk a German Shepherd? Experts have different opinions about the age at which a German Shepherd can go for a walk. There are two polar positions, so owners should consult their breeder or veterinarian. Some experts, when asked how to properly educate the pet, argue that it is categorically not recommended to walk puppies before they reach 3 months old. This is due to the high vulnerability of puppies to infections, which they can catch while playing with other dogs during the period when routine vaccinations have not yet been done. Put napkins or gravel or sand on it. Keep a close eye on your puppy. The negative side of this approach is the increased likelihood of encountering puddles of urine at night even in adulthood. According to the opposite opinion, up to 2 months old puppies still have the immunity received from their mother, so you should start walking outside as early as possible. Increased production of vitamin D due to exposure to sunlight, preventing the development of rachitis. Frequent exposure to nature increases the production of general immunity. If you decide to walk your puppy from an early age, you must choose a small but clean area and prevent him from coming into contact with other animals, especially stray ones. Until the German Shepherd reaches the age of six months , you should carry him in your arms when walking up a flight of stairs. His spine is not yet strong enough, so sprains when going up and down are detrimental. How long should you walk The duration of a walk with a German Shepherd puppy should increase in increments. In the first days, minutes is enough to familiarize the dog with the world and empty the bowels and bladder, but you need to go out times a day. It is better to go out right after feeding. Further, the duration of time outside should be in accordance with age: three months — about half an hour, the puppy should definitely run; four months — from 40 minutes to 1 hour; at six months, the normal mode of walking is established — at least two hours, twice a day. If it is possible to walk longer, you should take advantage of the opportunity. You need to figure out how to walk your German Shepherd correctly. To do this, you need to follow a few tips. It is important to use every walk outside to teach your dog to potty outside the apartment or house. While the dog is still very young but is already used to having to pee outside, spontaneous but short walks at night are likely. Up to 6 months old, it is important to make sure that the dog does not jump over any obstacles. As with ladders, this harms the skeleton and back muscles. You should try to take your German Shepherd outdoors during daylight hours so that he can enjoy the sunlight. After exploring the nearest surroundings, you should decide where to walk for an extended period of time. Great if there is a park or square nearby where it is allowed to walk the dogs. It is also important to go to special doggy playgrounds. You need to give your pet some freedom to get to know other puppies and adult dogs. It allows: Control the movements of the dog and accustom the puppy to the leash. Helps in the initial stages of training. Prevents him from eating unhealthy food picked up off the ground. Provides safety when stray dogs appear. More mature dogs can be leashed to a collar. Answering the question of when you can put the collar on the puppy, many experienced breeders responded with a recommendation to do it as early as possible, so that the puppy got used to the foreign object initially. Before buying a collar or harness, it is important to pay attention to the material: Leather — is the most durable, suitable for walks and training, but it is recommended to replace it in rainy or snowy weather. Leather gets wet, stretches, and loses its durability from moisture; Tarpaulin — holds its shape in all conditions, but is prone to contamination and has a short lifespan; Synthetic — is versatile and does not have the negative qualities of the previous 2. To properly put on the harness or collar during the period of accustomization, you need to create a comfortable atmosphere for the puppy: calmly call by name, and offer a treat. Before buying, it is important to measure the pup. This will allow you to choose the optimal size collar, in which the German shepherd will feel comfortable, and walks will be a pleasure both for the pet and for its loving owner. David W. Walking by a German Shepherd puppy is a development milestone through its growth phase. By understanding the developmental stages of a puppy, you can know the best times to start certain activities. Having a new puppy is an exciting time. You may want to do many things with them, play or take them for a walk. So, when do German Shepherd puppies start walking? This however does not indicate the right time to immediately start taking them outside for walks which would put their health at risk. In this article, we will discuss German Shepherd puppy development to understand the growth stages, when it is safe to start walking your puppy, and how much walking is best. They are toothless and cannot walk. At this time they are completely dependent on their mother who feeds and cleans up after them. During this time they mostly sleep and nurse, doubling their weight in the first week. The eyes open followed by their ears. They start standing up and take their first steps, they can now support their weight and stop crawling on their belly. They also start becoming playful. A puppy at this time still cannot defecate by themselves so their mum licks their anal and genital areas to stimulate the area to enable them to pass stool. The milk teeth start emerging at this time and remain until teething begins. Socialization starts where they are exposed to people and other dogs or animals. This is also the period that is important to help them learn behaviors that are expected of them. Although young and their brains are still developing, they can still learn new things such as potty training. They can also defecate and urinate on their own now. At 8 weeks of age, they start losing their baby teeth and start the teething stage where the adult teeth start to emerge. The teething period lasts up to months of age where all the adult teeth will have emerged. Once a German Shepherd puppy is adopted and taken to their new home, socialization and training continue. Recommended Reading: Why does my German Shepherd puppy sleep so much? A German Shepherd is considered a puppy from the newborn stage up to the adolescent stage at 5 to 6 months. The beginning of the adolescent or teenage stages marks the end of the puppy stage. The adolescent stage lasts until the German Shepherd is 2 years old. The adolescent German Shepherds are like teenage humans as maturity begins and rage with hormones. They are alert but emotionally developing as they transition to adults. Their body is fully in the adult form however their brain is still developing. When should I start walking my German Shepherd puppy? Wait until your puppy gets all their vaccinations for infectious hepatitis, parvovirus, and distemper which are given through a series of shots. Thereafter wait 10 to 14 days after the last vaccine short that is the last booster shot is provided at around 16 weeks depending on when they went for their first shot. This waiting period is necessary because puppies are vulnerable to contracting infections and the immune system is still developing. After this time it is safe to start walking your puppy. How much walking does a German Shepherd puppy need? The amount of walking a German Shepherd puppy needs depends on their age. There are no fixed rules on how much walking or exercise to provide a German Shepherd puppy, however, the recommendation is no more than five minutes of walking for each month of their age two times a day. For example, a 6-month-old puppy should have no more than 30 minutes of walking twice a day. For large breed puppies such as a German shepherd, too much exercise would lead to bone and joint problems therefore they should not be overworked or exercised. Also, note when your puppy seems tired or reluctant to walk so that you also allow them to rest or take a nap to recuperate. Conclusion: When do German Shepherd puppies start walking? German Shepherd puppies start walking between 2 to 4 weeks old but this does not mean that they should start being exercised or being taken out for a walk. Puppies Establishing an efficient exercise routine for a German Shepherd puppy is extremely important for your GSD to live a healthy lifestyle. While there is no exact science to knowing your German Shepherd puppy exercise limits, it is best to slowly ease into a routine and your puppy will gain stamina over time. Dogs are creatures of habit and love a routine. Accordingly, if you normally walk your puppy first thing in the morning, your pup will start to expect and look forward to those morning walks as soon as you roll out of bed. Try and establish an exercise routine that you can maintain long term, so your puppy can grow to learn the routine. The American Kennel Club UK recommends two exercise sessions of 5 minutes per month of age during puppyhood 1. When Allie was a puppy, I found short walks multiple times a day worked well. I started Allie with short minute walks times a day as an 8-week-old puppy. This served two purposes, to get some of her energy out, as well as getting her used to walking on a leash. Finding the Right Length of Walks for Your Puppy Although there are many recommendations as to how long to walk your German Shepherd puppy, it is best to look to your puppy for clues on its limits. Start with 10 minutes, 2 times a day. If you find your puppy is still a ball on energy increase it to 15 minutes, or you can add in a third minute walk. You want to find the walking time that is right for your individual GSD puppy as all puppies are all different and will require different amounts of exercise. Keep in mind, that it can be dangerous to push your German Shepherd puppy beyond his or her limits at a young age. If your German Shepherd puppy show signs of being tired or exhausted, stop the walk immediately and allow your pup to rest. Final Thoughts Establishing a solid exercise routine for your German Shepherd puppy is an important step in establishing the framework for a healthy lifestyle. In addition to walks, I would include short play sessions in the yard with a ball or play with toys in the house as well. The most important thing with walking a German Shepherd puppy is to start with short walks and play sessions and build on that process as your puppy grows. How much exercise does your German Shepherd puppy need? Your puppy does not need nearly the amount of exercise an adult dog does. Adult German Shepherds require two hours or more of exercise every day. And within that time, the duration of exercise depends on intensity. Your dog would not spend an entire two hours performing high-intensity exercises unless in formal training. A typical routine would include 20 to 40 minutes of rigorous exercises such as jogging, vigorous playing, or other activities. Some examples are practicing Shutzhund, preparing for herding or agility trials, or learning search and rescue. The remainder of the time dedicated to exercise, you should spend on training, ongoing socialization, and moderate- and low-intensity activities. You can include warmup and cool down in a moderate or leisurely walk. Keep in mind any puppy who is not full-grown does not need to engage in rigorous exercise for extended periods. What is the five-minute per month rule? However, one rule that makes sense as a loose guideline, is to exercise your pup for five minutes per month of age. You can do an exercise session twice a day. If you bring a GSD puppy home at ten weeks old, your exercise guideline would tell you to work with her for about .A six-month-old puppy , which you may be tempted to treat as a miniature adult, should still only get about half an hour of exercise twice a day. By 10 or 12 months , your Shepherd is up to his quota of nearly two hours split into multiple sessions during a day. However, you should still limit jumping and long-distance running until you are sure your puppy has finished growing. How do you know when your Shepherd puppy has stopped growing? This closure signifies your dog has finished growing and can engage in exercises that may be too strenuous for bones that are softer when lengthening. Once growth plates close and the joints no longer have laxity from extreme youth, you can take exercise to the next level. How can you tell if your Shepherd has stopped growing without a radiograph? According to Animalso. Use particular caution with certain working lines as they may not reach full maturity until the age of three years. Even though Czech and Eastern German lines have lower incidences of hip dysplasia than show dogs, you still need to treat their growing bones with care. Common beliefs notwithstanding, if you neuter a German Shepherd at a young age, the decrease in testosterone generally will delay growth plate closure. You will notice that neutered male German Shepherds are often taller than their unaltered counterparts. Therefore, assume if you neuter your dog, he will physically mature a little later. Mentally he will mature worlds ahead. How does hip dysplasia affect German Shepherd puppies? Hip dysplasia is a growth abnormality that affects most large-breed dogs and many small breeds as well. As you likely know, the hip is a ball and socket joint. The ball is the head of the thigh bone or femur, and the socket is the acetabulum or cup in the pelvis. In dysplasia of the joint, the femoral head grows at a different rate than the socket. Rather quickly, the femoral head no longer fits correctly or congruently within the socket, affecting function and causing scrapes across the protective cartilage, according to ACVS. Inappropriate looseness of the joint exacerbates the condition by allowing too much movement within the joint. Depending on the severity, affected puppies and dogs may show mild to life-altering symptoms. Signs of joint laxity or looseness usually occur first, although they may go unnoticed. Visible space between the head of the femur and the pelvis — Sometimes you can feel the excessive space when you cannot see it. Crying out in pain — Even if it has not progressed yet to degenerative joint disease, joint looseness can be painful. Abnormal gait — Your puppy may appear to bunny hop in the rear legs or exhibit other gait abnormalities that you would not classify as obvious lameness. Lame — Your dog will show lameness if she is in pain. Difficulty getting up or laying down — Your puppy may even show consistent reluctance to get up. Decreased interest in playing, especially if it involves running. Exercise intolerance — Your pup will play, but not for as long as you would expect. Maybe your dog seems to tire easily. Difficulty negotiating stairs — Joint looseness greatly affects the athleticism of your dog. Will not sit square — Many trainers advocate you enforce your dog sitting square as a sign of true obedience. Dogs with hip issues, they are unable to sit comfortably unless their hind legs are to one side or the other. Joint laxity can be difficult to judge in young dogs. Puppies have a greater degree of laxity than adult dogs to accommodate growth. Joint laxity should limit how long you walk a German Shepherd puppy , especially one under six months old. Joint laxity means your puppy will experience significant instability when walking, predisposing her to stumble and fall. Signs of osteoarthritis mostly manifest as pain, dysfunction of the joints, decreased range of motion, and even grinding sounds as the leg moves. Degenerative joint changes, believe it or not, can occur in puppies only several months old. German Shepherds do not typically have a problem with obesity. Although it seems counterintuitive, too much nutrition is not an ideal thing for the GSD. If a large-breed dog grows too quickly as a puppy, he can be more vulnerable to hip dysplasia if he already carries the genes. The dilemma comes with balancing exercise requirements and nutrition, so you have a happy and fit puppy who is not overweight but also does not overexert herself. How does exercise affect hip dysplasia? Although hip dysplasia has a large hereditary basis, over exercising a puppy can exacerbate the problem in a dog who might not otherwise develop any symptoms. It is important not to allow your puppy to run excessively or jump during her growing months. Moreover, if your puppy has excessively lax joints, overstretching during long and strenuous running or launching and landing for jumps can cause direct injury to the hips and surrounding soft tissue. Your puppy can also injure her growth plates. An X-ray at an early age gives you an idea if your puppy is already showing the effects of DJD or degenerative joint disease. Your veterinarian may be able to advise you further if your exercise program is too strenuous for your puppy based on any changes in the joints. How do you know your puppy overexerted himself? You may occasionally find that your puppy overdoes it. Perhaps you took him to a birthday party for his Labrador friend, and you did not have the heart to break up their play session. Most of the time, a play date that gets out of hand or a walk that runs over the anticipated time allotment will not cause any permanent damage. You can assess your pup the following day for signs of overexertion and know to take it exceptionally easy for the next day or two. Listen to your puppy Although you should leash-train your GSD at a young age, starting as soon as you first bring her home, there is much to be said about freeform exercise. The biggest benefit of your puppy exercising a good part of her time in the early month off-leash is she can self-regulate her activity. You will notice when puppies are tired or become sore, they will stop dead in their tracks. Make sure your puppy is in a safe environment, and she can engage in fairly unrestricted exercise on her own. When you are walking your puppy on a leash, under no circumstances should you push her to go beyond the point where you are dragging her, or she sits down and refuses to move on? You may have to carry her the remainder of the journey. As your German Shepherd approaches adolescence at five to seven months old, you will have to monitor his exercise more because what he can do will begin to exceed what he should do. Running over rolling terrain for miles or training strenuously for pursuit work is not ideal for an immature Shepherd and can be potentially harmful. Best length of time to walk a German Shepherd puppy: you know best! When facing the question of how long should you walk your German Shepherd, use the rough guidelines of five minutes per month of age a couple of times a day. Otherwise, allow your pup to dictate her level of tolerance for playing and romping. You can spend additional time with your puppy building a bond through affection and play, while still limiting duration. Your pup will need some time during the day to herself and sleep. This video shows the progression of a puppy and how his exercise abilities change. It perfectly illustrates how the young Shepherd dictates how much exercise he can tolerate. Notice, in the beginning, the interaction with his owner is a large part dependent on easy contact. As the puppy progresses in age, he gradually attempts more. If you watch puppies even three and four months old engaged in self-directed play, their actions are marked by frequent pauses to rest or think about the next move. Rarely will you see a German Shepherd laying still, but as in the video, puppies will take time to rest if left to their own devices. Swimming is a great form of exercise, but not all German Shepherds love water. This video shows that just because your German Shepherd puppy is not on a leash does not mean you are not walking her. Training should take up a good portion of your walks or exercise sessions, whether on- or off-leash. As much of a brilliant pupil as this puppy is, her session should not be longer than 15 minutes. Notice her yawn, which can be a sign of tension or a wandering mind, indicating the exercise should move to something else or stop. If you are adopting a German Shepherd, helping it grow up healthy and strong is crucial for their overall development. Also, wait until your pup has their vaccines. Every puppy is full of energy—especially German Shepherds. They are known for being a very active breed and, as adults, require at least two hours of exercise a day. Wait until your puppy is at least six months old before you begin introducing them to exercising such as minute walks because it can cause permanent damage as they get older. Vets also highly recommend waiting until your puppy has received all of their puppy shots before beginning. Their bones and joints are growing and coming together. If you begin walking your German Shepherd puppy too soon, it can cause many health issues and stunt their joint and growth plate development. These health issues can lead to health problems that can affect your puppy long-term. This disease, while genetic, is significantly impacted by the environment. Like humans, dogs have ball and socket types of joints. Dogs develop hip dysplasia when the socket or ball grows faster or slower than their counterpart. Eventually, hip dysplasia can lead to arthritis in dogs and cause your pup to experience a lot of pain when walking. Walking or exercising your German Shepherd too young can cause problems with their still-developing joints and possibly increase their chances of developing hip dysplasia later on. Sprains Puppies are clumsy. Exercising your puppy too much can cause them to injure themselves and possibly suffer a sprain. As they get older and continue to walk on hard surfaces, their soft paws will become hard and thick. However, for puppies to develop thicker paw pads, they need to do so gradually. Taking your puppy for long walks too soon will cause it discomfort and unnecessary pain. While there are many signs to look out for if you want to start walking your puppy, there are also pros to getting your new little friend out and about. Taking your German Shepherd puppy for short walks now and then is perfectly fine. Daily walks are good because they can get your German Shepherd into a nice routine, and this will help as your puppy gets older and requires more exercise. Walks are also great for socializing your puppy. Walking your puppy to a dog park or around an area where other dogs are around is an excellent way of introducing your German Shepherd puppy to other dogs. Doing this will make them less afraid of other animals when they grow into adult dogs. Five Minutes Per Month Many vets recommend that you only exercise your German Shepherd puppy five minutes for every month of age. Every puppy is different and might require different needs. Some puppies might be able to walk for longer periods, while others might require less time. You must pay attention to your German Shepherd puppy to know what they need. The five minutes per month rule is a great way to start your puppy, and you can change it as you go along. As your puppy gets older, you can increase the amount of exercise they get. But ask your vet when you should start walking your dog for more extended periods before deciding for yourself. German Shepherd puppies are full of energy. So, seeing them romp around for a while and then suddenly crash is common. If they are, you should let them get their rest. If you notice your puppy limping after a walk, something is probably wrong. They could have injured themselves without you even noticing. Let your puppy rest and if they continue to limp after a few days, take them to the vet to get checked out. Your puppy needs time to rest and develop as they grow. However, if you want to take your puppy out for short walks, you can! Not only will this adapt your new pup to a schedule, but it will allow them to socialize with other dogs and get some of that newfound puppy energy out of their system.
