Fear Fear aggression is a type of aggression in which the dog is afraid and has an intense fear-based reaction to people or other animals. This type of aggression is often triggered when the dog feels like it needs to protect its property, including its food, sleeping area, toys, or other belongings. Dogs with this type of aggression can present with signs such as growling if their space is invaded, biting if an intruder gets too close, defending their food bowl with their teeth, and snapping at anyone they perceive as a threat within the household. Social Aggression On the other hand, social aggression is defined as dogs acting aggressively towards people or animals to try and exert control over them. This could include the dog growling, barking, or biting when someone tries to touch them; or when visiting family members attempt to hug or kiss the dog. Redirected Aggression Redirected aggression is a type of aggression in which an aroused dog behaves aggressively toward an innocent bystander after being unable to attack the target initially motivated to bite. It can also happen during play between pets. This can include two dogs playing too aggressively or focusing too much on being dominant. Unfortunately, another dog playing nearby may take the brunt of the attack. Frustration Aggression German Shepherds may become aggressive when they are frustrated. For example, a German Shepherd may become aggressive when it is not given enough exercise or confined to a small space. German Shepherds may also become aggressive if they are teased. If not given enough exercise and companionship, German Shepherds may be more likely to get into fights with other dogs. If this behavior is repeated, it can lead to more severe aggression such as possessive aggression, dominance aggression, etc. A lack of discipline from the owner will also contribute to possessive and dominant aggression in German Shepherds. Once these behaviors have been displayed several times by the dog, the owner loses control over the situation. This makes it difficult for them to enforce commands they may give to the dog. Dominance Aggression Although similar to territorial aggression, dominance aggression is the most common type of aggression in dogs and is usually displayed when the dog feels like it needs to assert its dominance over people or animals. Dogs may also become agitated and aggressive when someone approaches them while eating or playing with a toy. This is because estrogen and testosterone can cause aggressiveness. Although, you should consult your veterinarian to know if getting your dog spayed or neutered is the best choice and if your dog is the right age for this kind of operation. This is known as injury or illness aggression. Signs that a dog is exhibiting this type of aggression can include whining, cowering, shaking, and even attacking people or other animals. Dogs may become aggressive to protect themselves from further injury or to get away from the person or animal that is causing them pain. However, they only become aggressive when under certain circumstances. These dogs are not usually aggressive unless they have a reason to be. A reason they may become aggressive can be any of the ones listed above. German Shepherds are not usually aggressive against other dogs. However, there is no guarantee that this will always be true because it depends on their environment or experiences with other animals. Some reasons that a German Shepard may become aggressive against another animal include: If they have been attacked by an animal before. If they have seen someone being attacked by an animal before. If they were attacked as a puppy and it was not corrected. These dogs are pretty playful; therefore, any growling or aggression you notice when your dog is around another dog is most likely playful in nature. However, it would be best not to overlook this, as playful aggression can quickly turn to severe aggression. This is why you should never let two dogs be alone without supervision. Symptoms of Aggression The symptoms of aggression in German Shepherds are variable. The following are some of the symptoms that you might see in your dog if aggression is an issue that they face: Depression, destruction of items in the home, withdrawal from human contact. Reluctance to wake up in the morning or even get out of bed. This can be due to anxiety or insecurity when left alone. If your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, it might indicate aggression, and you should consult with a professional trainer or behaviorist to find out the underlying cause. German Shepherds are often considered one of the more aggressive breeds in the United States, but there are ways to train them and help them feel more comfortable in their environment. With a little bit of work, you can have a well-behaved and happy dog! How to Prevent German Shepherd Aggression Luckily, there are ways to prevent this aggression from developing. They can excel in various activities such as agility trials, herding, tracking, and Schutzhund. However, they can also be stubborn at times and require patience and consistency when training. As a result, they can be territorial and protective of their family and property. It is essential to teach them that strangers are not a threat unless you tell them otherwise. December 30, German Shepherds were originally bred as protection animals. Therefore, they have protective and territorial instincts that other dogs may not have. There are a lot of mixed opinions about this topic — as well as a lot of mixed science that seems to back up both sides. Most aggressive German Shepherds are aggressive because of their owners. German Shepherds need to be socialized and trained so that their territorial instincts can be harnessed. To accept individuals into their homes, German Shepherds need to be taught that not everyone is bad. In fact, these dogs can be extremely gentle when raised properly. However, not everyone who owns a German Shepherd is responsible. Without the proper knowledge, these dogs may not get the socialization they need to thrive. On the other hand, other owners know perfectly well what the German Shepherd needs — but find it more difficult to provide for those needs than they originally expected. They may get the care they need as adults but then be mostly kept to themselves as puppies. The American Veterinary Medical Association ran a whole study on whether or not particular dog breeds were more likely to be aggressive than others. However, it is essential to realize that these breeds are also more common in the United States. In Canada, most dog bites are attributes to Siberian Huskies and other sled dogs — likely because these are the most common breeds there. Similarly, in Rome, Italy, Mastiffs were found to have the highest bite occurrence. However, they are also one of the most popular dogs in that area. Furthermore, the popularity of different breeds coincided with bite reports. The more popular a breed was, the higher that bite statistic rose. It seems to be largely associated with the popularity of the breed, not their actual aggression levels. Based on behavioral assessments, small breeds seem to be the most aggressive — not larger breeds like the German Shepherd. However, these bites are largely underreported because they do not usually require treatment. Bites on children statistically come from small breed dogs, like Chihuahua and Lhasa Apsos. The statistical difference in bites reported between children and adults likely comes from the fact that children need treatment after a small breed bite, while adults do not. The behavioral assessments for German Shepherds are mixed. This suggests that there is likely high variability within the breed. Some German Shepherds are much more likely to be aggressive than others, in other words. Again, socialization and training play a large role in this. Adopting your dog from a qualified breeder is also important. After all, genetics do play a role as well. There is no evidence that German Shepherds are more likely to bite their owner than any other breed. Like all dogs, German Shepherds will protect themselves if threatened. If an owner is too rough with a German Shepherd, they may try to defend themselves by biting. This trait can be said for all breeds , though. No dog is going to submit to injury if they feel like they can defend themselves. Again, we highly recommend socializing this breed at a young age. Most bites are caused by fear, including those directed at people. For instance, dogs are commonly afraid of umbrellas. At the same time, you should also familiarize yourself with proper dog training. Positive reinforcement training works best, as there is a very small chance that the dog is going to react negatively to treats. After all, dogs bite things they are scared of! Dominance training has been disproven for dozens of years. It can also make your dog react negatively, causing your dog to bite. Are German Shepherds Naturally Aggressive? They were bred to protect herds of sheep and were then utilized for military and police work. Their protective instincts are still with them today, as they are commonly still used as guard and protection dogs. They are not Labrador retrievers in the least! They are very calm family dogs in most cases, especially if they are socialized from a young age. They are not particularly more likely to bite than other breeds when properly socialized and trained. There is a lot of variation amongst German Shepherds, though. Some are more likely to bite than others. Much of this depends on the training, though genetics can play a role as well. If you purchase a German Shepherd as a puppy, we highly recommend purchasing them from a quality breeder. Breeders are not going to breed a dog if they are overly aggressive and untrainable. Dogs are born with innate instincts and behaviors — including territorial behaviors. All German Shepherds will display territorial behaviors from their birth. These are innate instincts. A little German Shepherd puppy is going to be at least somewhat wary of strangers. It will likely take a least a year for a German Shepherd to get large enough to actually be intimidating. Before this time, these dogs will likely be too small and puppylike. However, it can take up to two years before a puppy is full-grown. The instincts will be there from birth, though. German Shepherds can be great pets — for the right family. However, there are many cases when they can make very poor pets. German Shepherd dogs require significant amounts of training. Not only do they need to be taught how to behave, but these dogs are also extremely intelligent. Therefore, you should continue to train them even after they have mastered all the basic commands. However, it is particularly important for German Shepherds. Sadly, good breeders can be difficult to come by. These dogs are quite popular, so there are lots of breeders out there. Many people mistakenly believe that purebred dogs are healthier than mixed breeds. However, the opposite is true. Purebred dogs are prone to a variety of genetic conditions, including the German Shepherd. Hip dysplasia and a wide variety of other conditions are common in this breed. German Shepherds shed a lot. They require daily brushing in some cases. You should only adopt from a breeder that puts temperament at the forefront. You need to socialize German Shepherds a lot. They need to be introduced to many different people so that they know that not everyone is a threat. You only want them protecting you and your family from bad people — not everyone. However, Boxers are heavy-boned dogs with a wide frame. So, can Boxers swim or will they sink? Boxers can and often do enjoy swimming, however, they are at risk while swimming in bodies of water. For this reason, safety precautions are necessary. Plenty of Boxers have successfully become good swimmers. But before you throw your Boxer in the deep end, there are things you should know. Some breeds, such as the Golden Retriever or Chesapeake Retriever, were actually bred to swim. Needless to say, this is not the case with Boxers. And while plenty of Boxers regularly swim, they have clear disadvantages in the water that all owners need to know about before putting them in the pool. In fact, I think the adorable faces are the best part of the Boxer. Specifically, it makes it more difficult for Boxers to breath while treading in water. Dog breeds with these facial characteristics are called Brachycephalic dogs. All of which, should be carefully monitored when put into large bodies of water. However, when these dogs have to tilt their heads upwards while in water, the restriction can be much greater. The unnatural position while dog paddling puts your Boxer at a huge disadvantage while swimming. So, the best way to help them in the water is to provide a life jacket to give them a more natural posture in the water. Weighing in at around 60 pounds and standing roughly 22 inches tall, Boxers are a fairly typical medium dog. Combine that with the difficulty of breathing and you could potentially have a real big problem on your hands. Once again, the best way to counter this problem is to provide them with a life jacket. As you may have guessed, Boxers are not one of them. In fact, they were not purposely bred to be anywhere near water. On the contrary, Boxers were specifically bred for bull-baiting now, an illegal blood sport and later on, as multi-purpose farm dogs. The most successful working Boxers most likely never even played in the nearby lakes! In addition, they pulled carriages for butchers to the slaughterhouses, among many other farm jobs. Can Your Boxer Swim? Whether a Boxer is good at swimming depends on the individual dog. Even whether a Boxer will enjoy a swim will greatly vary. With that said, we surveyed real Boxer owners to ask the question: can your Boxer swim? Responses are collected from various dog forums, including the popular Boxer Subreddit. Real Owner Answers: 1. She knew she loved water the moment we first visited a lake. It was love at first sight for her. My girl will only go as far as getting her toes wet, but will avoid getting her chest wet. Not only will a life vest give your Boxer a nice boost of confidence but it also gives you, the owner, some peace of mind. Unless your dog is already super experienced, I never recommend going without a life vest. A big reason why we recommend a life vest is because novice dog swimmers will only paddle their front feet as the bottom feet looks for the ground. It looks very comfortable for the dog, which is crucial in the beginning stages. Plus, the bright colors makes your dog highly visible. Next, you can fill a portable kid pool or bathroom tub with water and let them literally get their feet wet. Keep in mind, the second step should take a while. Spend multiple days playing in a tub of water prior to the day planned for swimming. Whether a pool or lake, let your dog sniff the water and get used to the sight of the body of water. Start Shallow This seems obvious, but apparently not to every dog owner. Always start with the shallow end first. The quickest way to freak out your Boxer is by throwing the dog into the deep end for the first time. Before getting into the shallow end, make sure the life vest is on at this point. Instead, try bribing them with some delicious treats make sure to only bring the best. As they get closer into the water, or deeper in, make sure to give positive praises along the way. Boxers thrive on positive reinforcement. So, it really helps their confidence by doing so. If your dog has a favorite toy, make sure to bring that with you too. Try throwing their toy into the water. Once your Boxer gets into the water, slowly bribe them to go deeper and deeper. Here are some extra tips from the professionals. PetMD suggests that you always start with a dog leash in addition to the life vest on your Boxer. Not only will it keep your dog from swimming too far out, but it will give both you and your dog an extra sense of security. Basset Hounds Besides the fact that the body of a basset hound isn't designed for swimming with their large heads and short legs that make it difficult to stay afloat , the large, floppy ears that are the trademark of this breed are prone to infections when water gets in the ear canal. Boxers This is another large, athletic breed you might think would be a natural-born swimmer. But the flat face on the boxer makes swimming just as dangerous for these dogs as it is for the more diminutive pug. The struggle to breathe and keep their noses above water means boxers may tire quickly and run the risk of drowning if in the water too long. Corgis Despite having an affinity for water, neither the Cardigan Welsh corgi nor the Pembroke Welsh corgi are strong swimmers. This is due to the combination of a long body, barrel-shaped chest and disproportionately short legs. So, it's best to let them enjoy splashing in shallow water. Dachshunds As with corgis, the elongated body and short legs of dachshunds make them poor swimmers. Even swimming in shallow water can tire the dachshund's little legs out to the point of danger. Keep a close eye on them when they're around any amount of water. Shih Tzus Like many of the smaller breeds, shih tzus have a number of disadvantages when it comes to swimming. Not only can the shortened muzzle and small legs make it difficult to keep their nose and mouth out of the water, but their long, full coat can weigh this breed down and also cover the face, making breathing even more of a challenge. These little dogs can also catch a chill from spending too much time in the water. Water Safety for Dog Breeds that Can't Swim If you're already the pet parent of one of these breeds, or you have a dog with similar physical characteristics, it's important to take steps to keep your pup safe around water whether it's a pool or on a boat. Here are some helpful tips for things you can do: Invest in a good doggie life jacket and put it on your pooch whenever they're near a body of water, including your swimming pool. Look for one made with waterproof materials that's rated for the size and weight of your dog, preferably with a handle on top that would allow you to quickly haul them to safety. The fit should be loose enough to be comfortable but tight enough that they won't slide out of it. Stick to the shallows when taking your dog to the lake or beach. Encourage them to wade or splash in the water if they enjoy it, but don't force them to get in the water if they don't. Either way, keep them from wading in over their heads. If you have a swimming pool, put a fence around it to keep your dog out. The best fences aren't enough to keep some dogs out, so consider installing a ramp that would allow your dog to easily climb to safety if they fall in the pool. It's also a good idea to teach your dog how to swim safely. The best method, says AKC, is to allow another dog to show your dog the ropes. Look for a friend's or neighbor's dog who is a good swimmer and who plays well with your pooch, and invite them over for a supervised play date in the pool. Your dog will learn what to do from watching the other dog. Just be sure your pup is wearing their life vest during their swimming lesson. Supervise your dog closely at all times whenever they're around water, including shallow water. If you still want to provide your poor swimming dog a way to cool off in the heat of summer, consider investing in a small plastic kiddie pool. They're shallow enough to allow your dog to stand in the water, while still allowing them the fun of splashing in the pool. Not all dogs are good swimmers, and this isn't an exhaustive list. Sometimes, even dogs who were bred for swimming and water activities don't enjoy swimming. Bath time aside, you should never force any dog who's averse to water to swim or play water sports. I prefer the longer type, as they help to keep the dog's hindquarters afloat. A buckle collar is important so that you can lend guidance and support to your dog, as well as for your use in the event of an emergency. As you will be in the water with your dog, teaching and assisting, I recommend that YOU wear protective clothing, such as jeans and a long sleeved shirt, to prevent being clawed or bruised. To get started, socialize young pups 6 to 8 weeks of age to a running water hose. This will stimulate curiosity and offer a new tactile experience. Small baby pools and shallow lake banks are great places to work with younger dogs in helping them to become comfortable with having their feet and legs submerged. Do not expect your dog to be a "natural". Starting to swim will require your patience and encouragement. It takes more than a few times in the pool or the lake before your Boxer starts to really enjoy himself. If your dog is strongly motivated by toys, use one that floats to coax him into the water. Teaching your dog to safely enter and exit the water is critical. If teaching in a pool, use the stairs to lower your dog into the water each time and as the exit as well. Some suggest that you use a large cone marker or bicycle flag to help visually mark the stair or shoreline exit for your dog. The first time you and your Boxer enter the water, try to make it a positive and pleasant experience. Support the dog's body with your arms underneath his chest and lower him into the water one step at a time. Some dogs will splash wildly around when they first start. This is normal and will soon subside as your dog starts to relax and learn to effectively propel himself through the water. The transitional step, when your Boxer's feet no longer touch the bottom, being totally suspended in the water, is most critical. Float him in front of you as walk around in the water, lending your support with your arm under his belly. Helping your Boxer to keep his front feet under the water will minimize splashing. You may need to repeat this a number of times depending how quickly his level of confidence increases. Once your dog feels, at ease in the water with your assistance, it is s time to let him start on his own. With your support, swim him out into the water or to the center of the pool and point him in the direction of his exit or the shoreline. Guide him to the steps or shoreline and praise heavily. Repeat as many times as needed to build his confidence. Next, encourage him to swim toward you, rather than to the exit or shoreline. Swimming is well known to slow progression, strengthening leg muscles, giving your older Boxer a therapeutic workout. Again, your Boxer should have a thorough check-up by his veterinarian before starting this type of exercise. Chances are, if you are just now introducing your older Boxer to swim, extra patience will be needed, as older dogs wiII not acclimate to the water as easily as the youngsters will. While he is swimming, you will need to lend extra support to his hindquarters. Using the longer type of canine life jacket will help in keeping his back end buoyant. Swimming sessions should be short, but gradually lengthened each time. Some dogs may need to start out for only one minute. Swimming Tips: Never leave your dog unattended around the pool. Teach him the entry and exit. Use a canine life jacket at all times. Swimming is hard work, so keep sessions short and do not overtire your Boxer. Use your dog's favorite floating toy or ball to help motivate him to get in the water. Try to let your Boxer swim with other accomplished swimming dogs. He will learn from them as well.
