The conditions were horrible, and she was forced to give birth to litter after litter of puppies. Volunteers came to the puppy mill to rescue 37 pugs - and then they also saw the English bulldogs in their cages. Ashley Helkenn When the rescuers asked the owner what would happen to the bulldogs, she said that she would probably kill them. So, of course, the rescue immediately took them, too. When Schnitzel first arrived into the care of the rescue, she had countless issues. She had cherry eye in both of her eyes so severe that she could barely see at all. She also had demodectic mange, a severely sensitive stomach, an infected tail that had to be amputated, infected ears, kennel cough and pneumonia. Ashley Helkenn Soon, Schnitzel went into foster care. Her issues seemed endless, and it was uncertain if any family would be able to take her on. But soon, someone fell in love with her. While her husband was skeptical, Helkenn fell in love with the sweet girl immediately. Hans knew that I knew it was a good fit, so he trusted it. She had every reason to hate people and want to lash out at them, or to be so filled with fear that she couldn't trust people. But she wasn't like that. She had no idea how to cuddle on the couch and struggled with being house-trained. Her diet had to be very strict, and any missteps would cause her severe issues for weeks at a time. Slowly, though, she adjusted. Ashley Helkenn "She lived with a sense of giving people the benefit of the doubt, instead of making people prove themselves," Helkenn said. Looking back, I think I thought that maybe I could learn some of those lessons from her. Everything was going fine at first - until Hummer was diagnosed with dementia. Ashley Helkenn "He kept getting more aggressive and would act like he had no idea who she was," Helkenn said. Eventually, the pair developed a routine and they were able to be around each other with few issues. The real solution, though, was when their new brother Bratwurst arrived. Ashley Helkenn Bratwurst previously Brad Pitt , was also rescued from the puppy mill. He was fostered with Schnitzel initially and later adopted, but his new family ended up not being able to keep him. They contacted Helkenn to see if her family would want him, and they said yes - depending on if Hummer and Schnitzel got along with him. And, miraculously, both did. Ashley Helkenn "Bratwurst is the most laid-back dog I have ever met, so Hummer is good with him," Helkenn said. If she goes in her kennel, he will get in with her and stay there until she feels safe. Schnitzel and Bratwurst started life together in the puppy mill and somehow ended up together again - in a supportive, loving family. Ashley Helkenn "She has been such a transformative power in our lives and opened us up to a way of being present, practicing patience and teaching us to forgive," Helkenn said. The witness saw Victorio wearing surgical gloves with blood on them. Victorio was arraigned Thursday in San Joaquin County Superior Court on two counts of felony transportation of controlled substances, one felony count of animal cruelty and one misdemeanor count of practicing medicine without a license. As a condition of his release, Maldonado must wear a GPS ankle bracelet. He is due to return to court for a preliminary hearing at 8 a. San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar said the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed and more suspects could be charged. Victorio allegedly operated a cash-only puppy mill at one location in Lathrop and two in Manteca. Lathrop Police Chief Ryan Biedermann painted a horrific picture about what actually was going on inside what appeared to be an ordinary residence in Lathrop. The kitchen had been converted into a makeshift operating room, where surgical procedures were performed on French and English bulldogs in assembly line fashion: female dogs were inseminated, the puppies were removed by C-section, the same dogs were artificially induced into heat, were inseminated again and the process repeated. Victorio reportedly advertised on social media, offering C-sections and inseminations for far less than what a licensed veterinarian would charge. Biedermann said some of the dogs bear C-section incisions that were improperly closed and internal organs had been displaced to make room for more puppies. Several dogs have severe nerve damage affecting their ability to move their bowels and some have ear infections that require surgery. Deputies discovered at least 12 dogs at the Lathrop location in various states of poor health and about 30 dogs total after search warrants were executed at the two Manteca locations: a residence on the outskirts of town and a space in an industrial park. Six dogs required surgical attention by local licensed veterinarians. Biedermann said the suspect said he learned to be a vet in Mexico, though no evidence supports that. The dogs are being held as evidence at the Manteca Animal Shelter and are not available for public viewing or adoption until further notice. Follow him on Twitter bobhighfill. A puppy mill is a large scale commercial dog breeding operation where dogs live in cages and are bred repeatedly, producing puppies to be sold in pet stores across the country — and online throughout the world. There may be as few as breeding dogs or as many as breeding dogs housed at a single facility. It is estimated there are approximately 10, puppy mills in the USA, the majority being located in the Midwest. Read more here. Are puppy mills legal? The fact is, commercial dog breeding is considered legal business in the United States and has been for many decades. The current legal standards for care, housing and treatment in commercial breeding kennels are outlined in the Animal Welfare Act AWA , which was signed into law in .Although there have been amendments passed over the years and individual states may implement further regulations, the provisions remain grossly inadequate in providing basic, humane care for breeding dogs. Despite that we know this to be true, we have no legal authority over any aspect of the industry. In addition to the federal law, some states have laws that regulate the commercial breeding industry as well. However, in most cases, the standards that breeders are required to meet by law are extremely minimal. Conditions that most people would consider inhumane, or even cruel, are often totally legal. The cage only needs to be six inches larger than the dog top and sides — this does not include the tail. Painful, wire flooring is acceptable — and most common. Cages can be stacked one on top of another and the dogs relieve themselves in their cages. There is no limit. There is no limit to how many people should care for the dogs. One or two people can care for as many as 1, dogs. Unwanted dogs may be killed by the breeder — they do not have to be turned over to rescue or shelters. Interaction with humans is not required. How are dogs in puppy mills treated? Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. To minimize waste cleanup, dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs—and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the sun or breathe fresh air. How did puppy mills begin? Puppy mills became more prevalent after World War II. Nearly all popular breeds of dogs are produced in puppy mills. Small and medium size dogs are easiest to manage and house so they are most commonly bred, but larger breeds such as English Bulldogs, German Shepherds and even Great Danes are often bred in puppy mills as well. How can I get a puppy mill shut down? Keep in mind that the commercial breeding of dogs is a legal industry. This usually depends on the store. Some stores say that they return the puppies to the breeders, some say that they keep discounting them until they do sell, and some say that they will find a local shelter to take them to. Chain pet stores will often shuffle the puppies from one location to another, where there may be a better market for them. Information regarding pet stores that sell puppies can be found here. I heard that the AKC supports puppy mills, is that true? The fact is, many AKC-registered dogs are born in puppy mills. What is the difference between a puppy mill and a responsible breeder? Puppy mills exist for only one purpose — to make money. In a puppy mill, there may be as many as 30 different breeds and up to or more breeding dogs. Every female is pregnant with every heat, including their first heat at 6 — 10 months old when they themselves are still a puppy. The puppies receive little to no medical attention, are not socialized with people, are almost always taken from their mothers too young, and often start their lives out in the world sick and scared. There is absolutely no regard to the health and well-being of the breeding dogs and when they can no longer produce puppies, the majority of them are killed. Most often, a reputable breeder has great interest in one or perhaps two breeds. The purpose of their breeding program is to continually strive to bring their bloodlines closest to the breed standard. A reputable breeder spends a great deal of time, effort and money showing their dogs, socializing their dogs, having their breeding dogs tested for genetic defects, and being very careful to place their puppies in permanent, loving homes. A reputable breeder wants to know about you and develop a relationship with you. They enjoy updates and photographs of their puppies as they grow and are always available to help with any questions or concerns about their puppies. One of the most important things to know is that a reputable breeder has nothing to hide. They want you to meet the parents of the puppies and see the environment the puppies are raised in. If you really must purchase a puppy, read: How to find a Reputable Breeder How do I contact my lawmakers? Putting an end to puppy mills starts with YOU! Starting at the most local level of government, you have the ability to spread this message and raise awareness with those who have the power to create laws. A few days later, it happened again but he did bite him this time. Tonight he bit my other son. Both times he heard a noise and seemed very scared, but neither time did the noise come from who he charged at. Both times the boys tried to calm him down and talk to him; he bit anyway. Somewhere in the same time frame he has regressed and seems afraid of everything. Any sudden movements — running, a piece of paper I picked up, a bell on the collar we took out for Christmas, etc. He even came up on a bone on the floor and flew backwards as if it had hurt him. Eight weeks ago he played with the kids, enjoyed romping, running and playing soccer. Any suggestions? This is especially the case with puppy mill dogs who are raised in a stressful situation and are often missing out on positive experiences during their critical socialization period. Dog Gone Problems: Our dog barks and nips at people By David Codr When a dog starts biting, it's time to have the situation be addressed in-person by a dog behaviorist, dog behavior consultant or a positive-reinforcement-based dog trainer. Until that takes place, all interactions between your kids and the dog should be supervised. I can offer some advice, but you have many things going on and without a trained eye to observe your dog, I worry there may be other factors not being identified. It's a good thing you did notice, address and mention the infection, as it most certainly is a contributing factor. If it was aggravated by someone accidentally stepping on a paw, that may have been painful and caused a negative association. But just having an infection could be a factor here. You mentioned you had to carry the dog upstairs and force it into the crate for six weeks. Any form of force is going to be met with resentment. It's wonderful that you have abandoned that, but some damage to the relationship was likely done. If you are correcting — or, worse, punishing — your dog physically, that would certainly be a factor. Dogs don't learn though physical punishment, and it almost always makes matters worse. If your dog shows any teeth, growls, nips or bites, he's saying he disagrees. Any punishment applied will certainly make matters worse. I also tell people to poll their dog when they go to interact with it. This means if you want to pet the dog, you reach out and stop a few inches away from making contact. If the dog leans forward or nudges your hand, you can go ahead and pet. But if he turns his head to the side, backs up or lowers his head, he's saying, "I'd prefer to not be petted right now. Many young children interact with dogs inappropriately, including waking the dog with pets while he's asleep or interacting with him when he has bones, food or other high-value items, etc. These are times the dog should be left alone and given seven feet or more of space. Rough play and teasing can also happen with younger children, so make sure those are not going on. Some dogs put up with these type of interactions for awhile and then reach a boiling-over point. Be sure that is not the case in your home. A fenced off area is a good idea, but you can also incorporate safe spaces for the dog like a dog bed. Once there, the children should not be allowed to interact with him in any way. No petting, no talking to him, no tossing toys or attempting to lure him off the bed. Good luck and remember — everything you do trains your dog. Only sometimes you mean it. It's quite simple. We save doodle mixes from being taken to the pound, going to a shelter, or being put down. If you would like to be a temporary home for a rescue while we are seeking a forever home, please contact me by email sugarpinedoodles icloud. We do allow a one month trial basis for families interested in adopting a rescue. Please contact me with information about your lifestyle and the type of dog you're looking for and I can let you know if we have a rescue that we think is a match. I'd like to say that you are a pretty special person for even hanging out on a dog website. To top it off, you are on our Rescues page! No matter if you are determined to rescue a dog or just curious, can I please smack a big kiss on you for even thinking about it.I'd like to answer that question for you. We love dogs - plain and simple. We really love a lot of stuff. We love our family, we love the mountains, we love meeting new people, we love art, we love photography, we love the truth and we love life. Speaking of the truth. Therefore, there is a need for people like ourselves that already have a dog-seeking site to help facilitate wonderful animals finding a home. If you're reading this and wondering if there is another reason then just our love of animals for rescuing. Well, yes there is. We are breeders. Despite any bad press, breeders are part of the solution to neglected animals. We don't have puppies for fun or accident, that we hope our family, friends, or people at our local grocery store will take off our hands. We are the opposite of that. We spend most of our time speaking, emailing and texting families that are looking for a pet. We educate them, screen them for pet adoption, and support them once they do adopt. We are being responsible for the types of dogs we are breeding by selecting healthy, gentle, intelligent parents for our puppies. Our entire life is finding better ways to be good breeders and helping our families be good pet owners. With all this in mind, we believe that offering rescuing services will ensure none of our puppies we've placed in the world will ever end up in a kill shelter. We want to be the kind of breeder that supports our families for life. As a result, our families can call us and say they just can't keep their pet, for whatever reason, and we will come and get the dog. The first thing we do is have the owner explain everything about the pet they are giving up. We then bring that dog into our home and evaluate it's condition and get a game plan and timeline for finding it's new home. We are committed to keeping that dog for weeks or months until it's ready for adoption. We put that dog on our dog schedule; we do additional training; we crate train in our home; we have it sleep in our room at night for it to bond with us and see that this is it's home, and we bring it around town to socialize, socialize, socialize. Once that dog is ready to be adopted we post photos, a description, or both on our site and in advertising. Now, this rescuing isn't something new for us. As a child, I brought every stray animal home and nurtured it back to health and found it a home. I remember in college finding a stray dog with puppies behind our apartment complex with less than five dollars till the end of the week and no gas in my car. So, I asked a friend for a ride to the grocery store and posted a sign that I found a stray dog with puppies on the community board with my phone number. Next, I stood in the pet food isle and asked people if they would mind contributing a dollar so I could feed this skinny mommy so she could make milk for her puppies. A mean guy said he would get me a garbage bag to just dump them into. Well, I started balling. When he said that I freaked out that someone could even think that. I felt broken seeing this malnourished dog struggling with her puppies. I saw a person in there, a mom. Needless to say the man felt so bad when he saw me fall to pieces he handed me a twenty dollar bill. As I kept crying I thanked him and got food and some milk. I didn't know then that milk probably wasn't the best for this mommy dog. When I got back to my apartment I snuck the dog in and fed it warm milk and made a home for her and her puppies. No animals were allowed at our complex. Two of the puppies didn't make it and I was devastated. A friend came over and the mommy dog barked and really got protective so I really was getting stressed out about having this dog but I just couldn't put her outside. Luckily, a wonderful, beautiful lady called me that was a rescuer. She understood I was just a poor college student with limited resources. Two days later she arrived to pick up this dog. She said she would have the dog at her ranch until it was in better health then she would find it a home. Around a month later I received photos in the mail. The mommy stray and her three puppies found homes. One other thing, my apartment suddenly had flees and I had very upset roommates.Through this experience I learned a very important lesson, I could do something about another living thing struggling. I may have needed some financial help but all I had to do was ask. It's a fact that working together, placing an ad, asking for a donation, and doing the best I could do was good enough and that work helped get those dogs a home. Miracles happen, they really do. We are on some doodle rescue lists and many vets and shelters have our number. Many of our rescues have come from word of mouth. When we receive a rescue we do quarantine them from our doodles for a minimum of three weeks then do thorough testing for diseases before they come to our home. We typically work with a rescue for three to six months or as long as it takes. Next, is our re-homed doodles. Per our contract, we require all our adopting families, that can no longer care for their doodle, to return them to us for placement. A doodle can be returned for numerous reasons but in most cases that doodle is just too much for their adopting family. As a result, we occasionally have doodles available as re-homes. We always get a second and third opinion from outside trainers and behaviorists with every incoming dog. These evaluations are very informal and are more for the safety of our family and our doodles. We do not provide extensive reports, clinical diagnosis or professional evaluations. Instead, we use all the information we've collected and we work with each doodle until we can see they are ready for their forever home. Each of the doodles we offer are dogs I can and would live with myself. Now, I've been bitten numerous times, I've always had dogs, I've always rescued dogs and I'm quite experienced with dogs. With that said, I do not believe rescues or re-homes are appropriate for families with children and I prefer dogs with questionable pasts to go to families that are experienced with owning a dog. Please do not consider a rescued or re-homed doodle for the cost savings alone. Instead, consider a rescue or re-home for all the other wonderful benefits and perks of adopting an older dog. All of our rescues come with a contract, worming medication, blanket, 10 days of food, probiotics, toy, chew toy, tooth brush, microchip with lifetime membership in most cases, current vaccines, spayed or neutered, all the health records in our possession, life-time of support and small adoption fee. Past rescues and re-homes have ranged from to depending on many factors like costs incurred, age, training, desirable traits and expenses incurred to make them forever-home ready. The Australian Labradoodle can be made up of three breeds, which is unlike any other crossbreeds that has two different purebred parents. Or if the result is from the continuous breeding of Labradoodles. Continuous breeding simply means that you would have to cross two Labradoodles who both have Labradoodle parents. Once those puppies are full-grown, you have to complete that process five times, five generations. Then you will get Australian Labradoodle puppies, which are a multigenerational crossbreed. However, not all breeders are trustworthy. Reputable breeders will know how to breed a healthy puppy. They will also adhere to the standards set by the Australian Labradoodle Club of America. For first time owners Labradoodles are one of the best breeds because of how obedient and smart they are. Because they are a combination of a Labrador and a Poodle they can be easily trained. They also make great family dogs because of their gentleness with children. However, these dogs are not meant for everyone. They need someone who can be dedicated to them and can take them out on long walks and exciting adventures. Unfortunately this means some Labradoodles end up in shelters. Other times Labradoodles might grow larger than some people were expecting. By adopting a Labradoodle you are decreasing the demand on breeders and giving a dog a loving home. Acne Skin allergies most often present when a Frenchie is years old. These dogs also often have more than one allergy, which can make it that much harder to diagnose and treat. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available. However, these are often lifelong and can add up in cost over the years. Ear Infections 1. Allergies, which often cause ear infections in dogs 2. The shape of their ear canals French Bulldogs have narrower-than-normal ear canals, making it harder for debris and moisture to make their way out of the ear canal once it gets in. This makes it easier for infections to develop. Ear infections can easily be treated, but chronic ear infections in dogs can also change the skin that lines the ear canals. This further narrows the canal and leads to even more ear infections. Frenchies come with a slew of medical problems that can cost a lot of money to manage. You need to be financially prepared to handle any health issues that develop, and purchasing pet insurance is highly recommended. Birthing Issues French Bulldogs are rarely able to give birth naturally and almost always need a cesarian section C-section. The reason? Again, it comes down to their breeding. Frenchies have been bred to have notoriously large heads but very narrow hips. This causes the puppies to get stuck in the birth canal, which puts both the mom and puppies at risk of death. Back Injuries French Bulldog puppies can be born with a spinal deformity known as hemivertebra , or an incomplete vertebra spinal bone. While this deformity does not always cause issues, it can result in compression of the spinal cord, which can cause weakness in the hind legs, as well as fecal and urinary incontinence. If compression of the spinal cord does occur, advanced imaging techniques such as myelography, CT scans, or MRIs are usually required to diagnose it. Mild cases of spinal cord compression can often be treated medically but severe cases may require surgery. Because of their narrower trachea and congenital airway abnormalities, it can be much more difficult to insert an endotracheal tube, which is needed to help dogs breathe under anesthesia. When recovering from anesthesia, if their endotracheal tube is removed too soon, they may not be awake enough to compensate for their airway issues when breathing. This can cause respiratory distress and the need to be re-intubated. Frenchies are also more susceptible to inflammation of their already small airway after anesthesia, which, again, puts them at higher risk for respiratory distress. Frenchies are also predisposed to several stomach issues, which puts them at increased risk for vomiting and regurgitating, either after their pre-medication is given prior to anesthesia to help them relax or while under anesthesia. This then increases their risk of developing aspiration pneumonia after anesthesia. Because of these risks and issues, veterinarians typically take extra precautions with this breed to help mitigate risk. Cataracts Cataracts are a hardening of the eye lens, causing it to be opaque cloudy rather than clear. As cataracts progress, they eventually lead to blindness. French Bulldogs are genetically predisposed to cataracts, and the only treatment is surgery. Corneal Dystrophy and Corneal Ulcers Corneal dystrophy is another French Bulldog health issue that causes the cornea the outer surface of the eye to become opaque cloudy. However, as it progresses, it does make dogs more susceptible to corneal ulcers scratches on the surface of the eye , which are painful and require medical treatment. Ocular Dermoids Dermoids are a growth of skin in an abnormal place. French Bulldogs are predisposed to having dermoids in their eyes. This is a congenital condition typically present at birth. Distichiasis Distichiasis is an abnormal growth of eyelashes in dogs. Instead of growing out of their normal hair follicles along the eyelid, they can grow out of the glands along the edge of the eyelid. This causes the eyelashes to rub on the eye, which can lead to discomfort, inflammation, and corneal ulcers. This can be corrected with surgery. When the eyelid rolls inward, the hairs on the eyelid may touch the eye. This can cause irritation, increased tearing , conjunctivitis , and corneal ulcers. Surgery can correct the issue. Tear Stains Dogs and cats have a duct that runs from the inner corner of the eye down through the nose. This duct is typically where most tears from the eye are drained. This causes their tears to run down their face, causing brown or rust-colored tear staining. Retinal Dysplasia Retinal dysplasia is an inherited trait in dogs that causes abnormal formation of the retina the part of the eye that sends images to the brain. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for this disorder. Cherry Eye Dogs and cats both have a third eyelid in the inner corner of the eye. Cherry eye occurs when the tear gland attached to this third eyelid prolapses flips outward. This often appears as a pink or reddish round mass at the inner corner of the eye. Frenchies are genetically predisposed to this disease. Surgery is needed to correct this. Chronic Diarrhea French Bulldogs are predisposed to a number of gastrointestinal issues. One of the most common is food allergies, which can cause off-and-on diarrhea or soft stools. Frenchies are also genetically predisposed to inflammatory bowel disease IBD , which causes chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract, leading to chronic diarrhea. Treatment for both allergies and IBD is lifelong, and often requires special prescription diets and medication. Hiatal Hernia Another commonly inherited health issue in French Bulldogs is a hiatal hernia. Regurgitation most commonly occurs after eating and is a passive process where food slides back up the throat. This is different from vomiting, an active process that involves contraction of the stomach. Surgery can be performed to fix the diaphragm so the stomach can no longer slide through it. Pyloric Stenosis French Bulldog puppies can also be born with an abnormality known as pyloric stenosis. The pylorus is a valve-like structure that allows food to pass from the stomach to the intestines. Brachycephalic dogs such as French Bulldogs are genetically predisposed to a thickening of this structure, resulting in narrowing of the opening that passes food into the intestines. Common symptoms include regurgitation, decreased appetite , weight loss, and dehydration. Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a commonly inherited joint issue in French Bulldogs that results in a loose hip joint. This typically leads to arthritis and degenerative joint disease, which causes chronic pain. Medical management with pain medications, joint supplements , and physical therapy can be used to help with symptoms. Dogs with severe cases may need surgery. Always ask your breeder for all health information on your Frenchie puppy and their parents. Luxating Patella Luxating patella occurs when the kneecap slips out of place. You might see your pet with luxating patella suddenly limp for a few steps while running. They may kick out their leg a few times, then continue running like nothing happened. In mild cases, this condition can cause arthritis. Severe cases may need surgery to correct it. Dental Disease Dental disease is the most common chronic disease in dogs and cats. Frenchies and other brachycephalic breeds are even more predisposed. Overcrowding makes tartar build up faster. Frenchies also usually have an underbite, which further causes tartar buildup. As the tartar builds up on the teeth, it gets under the gumline, leading to gingivitis and deterioration of the gums and surrounding bone. Bladder or Kidney Stones Intact adult male French Bulldogs are predisposed to bladder and kidney stones made of a crystal called cystine. The cause for this is suspected to be genetic, but the gene has not yet been identified. Bladder and kidney stones can be incredibly uncomfortable. Fortunately, they can often be dissolved with a prescription diet that adjusts the acidity of the urine to help dissolve the stone. Pulmonic Stenosis Pulmonic stenosis is a congenital heart disease in which the pulmonary valve and artery the valve and artery that lead from the heart to the lungs are narrowed. This makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen, and in severe cases can lead to congestive heart failure. While not all cases require treatment, those that do will need a relatively high-risk procedure to widen the pulmonary artery and valve. Because this is an inherited trait, a good French Bulldog breeder will have a cardiologist assess their dogs prior to breeding. But if you are going to get one, you need to be prepared. Budget for Medical Care Frenchies come with a slew of medical problems that can cost a lot of money to manage. Find a Reputable Breeder Because French Bulldogs are purebred dogs, most people find them through breeders. This is a number given by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals once the pet has had the recommended testing for breed-specific issues. You also can use this number to check the results of the tests through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website. The breeder should ask you a lot of questions as well. This means they care about making sure their dogs go to the right home and that the breed is a good fit for you. They will want to meet you, whether in-person or via a video call. The breeder will let you look at their facilities and be proud of their setup. The mother should be on site with the puppies. You may have to wait. A good breeder will give you veterinary records for your puppy. Brittany Grenus graduated from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in with her doctorate in veterinary medicine and a.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? Yes, French Bulldogs are known for drinking a lot of water — fast. This is especially true after they get home from a walk or just were playing… they will usually drink a lot of water faster than they should… and throw it right back up. Why do Frenchies eat poop? This behavior is known as coprophagia. Here are a few reasons why your French Bulldog eats its own poop. Nutritional deficiencies: Some dogs eat feces to compensate for missing nutrients in their diet. Behavioral instinct: An inherited instinct from ancestors, dogs may consume feces to keep their living area clean. Boredom or attention-seeking: Dogs may engage in coprophagia due to boredom or to gain attention from their owners. Cleaning up the environment: Dogs have a natural inclination to keep their immediate surroundings clean. Medical issues: Underlying medical conditions can affect digestion and nutrient absorption, leading to coprophagia. My Frenchie has diarrhea — what do I do?! If your French Bulldog has diarrhea, there are a few steps you can take to help them recover: Monitor their condition: Keep an eye on the frequency and consistency of the diarrhea. Provide access to fresh water: Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so make sure your French Bulldog has access to clean, fresh water at all times. Encourage them to drink small amounts regularly to stay hydrated. Adjust their : Consider withholding food for hours to give their digestive system a rest. However, ensure they still have access to water. After the fasting period, reintroduce a bland diet consisting of easily digestible foods such as boiled chicken and rice. Gradually transition back to their regular diet once the diarrhea improves. Probiotics and digestive aids: Probiotics can help restore the balance of beneficial gut bacteria. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate probiotic supplements for your French Bulldog. Additionally, digestive aids such as pumpkin puree without additives can help firm up the stool. Maintain hygiene and cleanliness: Clean up any accidents promptly to prevent the spread of bacteria. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your Frenchie to avoid potential transmission of any pathogens. Your veterinarian can evaluate your French Bulldog, perform any necessary tests, and prescribe appropriate medication or treatment. Remember, diarrhea can be caused by various factors, including dietary indiscretion, dietary changes, infections, parasites, or underlying health conditions. There can be several reasons why your French Bulldog is not eating. Here are some possible explanations: Illness or pain: Loss of appetite can be a sign of an underlying illness or discomfort. Stress or anxiety: Dogs can experience a loss of appetite due to stress, changes in routine, or environmental factors. Events like moving to a new home, the presence of new pets, or loud noises can cause temporary appetite loss. Providing a calm and comfortable environment can help alleviate stress and encourage eating. Dental problems: Dental issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, or oral pain can make it uncomfortable for your Frenchie to eat. Inspect their mouth for any signs of dental problems, and if you suspect an issue, consult with a veterinarian for an oral examination. Recent vaccination or medication: Some dogs may experience a temporary loss of appetite after receiving vaccinations or starting a new medication. If this persists for more than a day or two, consult with your veterinarian to ensure there are no adverse reactions. Food preferences or boredom: Dogs can be selective eaters or get bored with their food. Adding variety or engaging in interactive feeding activities can also stimulate their interest in eating. Dogs can be sensitive to sudden dietary changes. Gradually transitioning to a new food over a week or two can help avoid digestive upset and encourage eating. Posted on. French Bulldogs are playful, affectionate, and charming. They get along well with their human families and other animals. These qualities as well as their adaptable quiet nature makes them a popular choice with residents of cities everywhere. Unfortunately, Frenchies are prone to various health problems. According to a study conducted by Royal Veterinary College in London , .The study also found that male Frenchies are slightly more susceptible to health issues than females. These health issues usually begin when the dog is only two to three years old or even younger depending on the genes. In fact, over the course of their lifetime, Frenchies will most likely suffer from one or more of the common health problems associated with the breed. Ear Infections Frenchies have very narrow ear canals. This makes them very vulnerable to ear infections. They're also prone to allergies which can also give them these infections. When this happens, their ear glands swell up to combat the infections and produce more wax than usual. This would result in an overproduction of ear tissue and makes the ear canal even narrower, and inflamed. In serious cases, the eardrum could rupture and cause your Frenchie a lot of pain. Watch out for redness inside the ear and excessive ear scratching as warnings of this problem. Conjunctivitis Because of the genetic makeup of Frenchies, they are more susceptible to conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by viral and bacterial infections or allergic reactions to substances. Look out for pink or red eyes in your Frenchie. Other symptoms include blinking more than usual, pus, mucus, or discharge leaking from their eyes. Viruses, parasites, or e. If their stool is runny, wet, tarry, or has blood in it, your Frenchie may have a serious digestion problem. Other tell-tale symptoms are loss of weight, loss of appetite, vomiting and fever. This can lead to dermatitis. It can also occur in other parts of their bodies that are folded, such as their necks, armpits, and crotches. Symptoms of this health problem include biting, itching, and scratching the area. The affected skin area may also be red and have sores. You can prevent dermatitis from occurring by keeping their skin folds dry. Every bulldog is likely to suffer from these infections at least once in their lives. Watch out for symptoms like coughing, nasal congestion, and lethargy. Skin Problems — Pyoderma bacterial skin infection Another common skin problem in French Bulldogs is bacterial skin infections. This happens when your dog has a scratch or cut that becomes infected. Also watch out for itching, pus, red skin, and loss of hair in your Frenchie. Chronic Allergies Allergies are one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose. They can be as a result of various factors. Food allergies in French Bulldogs are usually reactions to ingredients like dairy, wheat, and different types of meat. Environmental allergies may also be due to substances like cleaning products, mold, pollen, dust, and fleas. Symptoms of allergies in Frenchies include excessive itching, sneezing, watery eyes, raw patches, and vomiting. To combat environmental allergies use hypoallergenic clothing made especially for French Bulldogs. All of our Frenchie dog clothing are made with percent organic cotton without harmful chemicals that can cause skin irritation or worsen your French Bulldogs' allergies. This can lead to sleeping difficulties, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, and heat intolerance. This problem tends to occur during exercise and in warmer temperatures. Some include injuries, congenital conditions, and degenerative disease. Medical conditions like luxating patellas and hip dysplasia can also be caused by old injuries. Heat Stroke Being small and having a short nose and flat face makes French Bulldogs very prone to developing heat stroke, even in moderate temperatures. Symptoms of heatstroke in Frenchies include reddened gums, confusion, excessive panting and drooling, rapid heart rate, and bloody vomit or diarrhea. In severe cases, heatstroke may also lead to seizures, fainting, coma, and death. If you suspect that your Frenchie has a heat stroke, contact your vet immediately. Your Frenchie requires emergency treatment and you need to know how to safely lower his body temperature. Sometimes the symptoms may be difficult to detect. Some of the signs that may indicate that your Frenchie is sick include: Cough Coughing is pretty common amongst humans. However, if your Frenchie begins to cough, it's a major red flag. It often indicates heartworms, as well as other ailments. Whichever way, take your Frenchie to the vet immediately. Discharge or Eye Buildup This could be indicative of infection or eye irritation. Check to see if the eye is turning red. Also, examine the color of the discharge. If it's green or yellow, your Frenchie may need antibiotic eye drops. Vomiting Some dogs vomit their food particularly if they have difficulty breathing. Frenchies that drink a lot of water can even vomit stomach acid that looks like foamy water. However, if your pet throws up very often and vomits everything he eats, then take him to your vet as soon as possible. He may be dehydrated, ingested something bad, or have some underlying conditions. Not Eating and Drinking When we feel sick, we tend to lose our appetites. The same goes for your Frenchie. They may have caught a virus or could be in pain. In such cases, don't take any chances and contact your vet immediately. This procedure can usually be performed at the same time as a neuter or spay. Laryngeal collapse is a condition that happens when there is a loss of the rigidity and support for the laryngeal cartilage, causing the larynx, or voice box, to collapse. This leads to severe respiratory problems that make it hard for your dog to breathe in. This condition usually develops in dogs older than two years of age, but can happen earlier in brachycephalic breeds such as the French Bulldog. What causes laryngeal collapse in French Bulldogs? Laryngeal collapse usually develops as a complication to long-standing brachycephalic syndrome. What can you do if your French Bulldog is suffering from laryngeal collapse? Luckily, there are many different treatments options depending on the severity of the laryngeal collapse. Treatment of Mild Cases of Laryngeal Collapse Mild cases of laryngeal collapse may be treated with less-invasive procedures, such as shortening the elongated soft palate, enlarging the nostrils stenotic nares , and removing excessive, obstructive tissues within the throat. Shortening the elongated soft palate involves removing a portion of the tissue to help open up the airway. Enlargement of the nostrils stenotic nares : Stenotic nares are nostrils that are too narrow, which can make it difficult for a dog to breathe. Enlarging the nostrils involves removing a small amount of tissue from the nostrils to help improve airflow. Removal of excessive, obstructive tissues within the throat: In some cases, other tissues within the throat, such as tonsils or adenoids, may be obstructing the airway and making breathing difficult. Removal of these tissues can help to open up the airway and improve breathing. These procedures can help to open up the airways and improve breathing in dogs with mild laryngeal collapse. Treatment of Moderate to Severe Cases of Laryngeal Collapse Moderate to severe cases of laryngeal collapse may require more invasive procedures, such as partial removal of the collapsed cartilage. Partial removal of the collapsed cartilage: The cartilage in the larynx may collapse or become deformed, obstructing the airway and making breathing difficult. In moderate to severe cases of laryngeal collapse, partial removal of the collapsed cartilage may be necessary to open up the airway and improve breathing. Treatment of Severe, Persistent Cases of Laryngeal Collapse In severe, persistent cases of laryngeal collapse, a permanent tracheostomy may be required. This procedure is reserved for severe, persistent cases of laryngeal collapse when other treatment options have been exhausted. Regular veterinary care can help identify and manage laryngeal collapse early on, which can help prevent the condition from worsening over time. Hemivertebrae Hemivertebrae is a congenital present at birth condition of the spine. It refers to when the vertebrae of the spine are deformed and fuse or develop abnormally. This can result in twisting in the spinal cord and compression of the spinal cord. Compression of the spinal cord is a serious condition as the spinal cord is the central nervous system structure; it can result in nerve impulses not able to transmit their signals to the final destination. Symptoms of a more severe case of hemivertebrae include Weakness of the hind limbs Inability to control urinary and bowel movements Hemivertebrae can be diagnosed with a simple x-ray. Intervertebral Disc Disease This is a condition in which the discs between the vertebrae in the spine bulge or herniate into the spinal cord space. These discs can press on nerves, causing pain, nerve damage, and paralysis. What are the symptoms of Intervertebral Disc Disease? Damage to the discs in the spinal cord can be caused by forceful impacts such as jumping and landing. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a rare, progressive disease of the spinal cord that usually develops in older dogs between the ages of 8 and 14 years old. While French Bulldogs are actually less likely to develop this genetic problem when compared to other breeds, it is still a possibility. Symptoms generally begin to manifest with a loss of coordination in the hind legs, progressing to buckling limbs and difficulty standing. Within 6 months to a year from the beginning of the onset of degenerative myelopathy, most dogs will become paralyzed in their hind legs. After this point, the dog may experience a lack of control over their bladder and bowel movements. Weakness will eventually develop in the front limbs. What causes Degenerative Myelopathy? Degenerative myelopathy is caused by degeneration of the white matter within the spinal cord. The white matter in the spinal cord contains fibers that transmit nerve signals for movements from the brain to the limbs. Research has shown that a mutation in a gene is correlated with a higher risk of developing this disease. Unfortunately, this number is expected to rise in the future and we may start seeing many more French Bulldogs affected by degenerative myelopathy as time goes on. How is Degenerative Myelopathy Diagnosed? Degenerative myelopathy is diagnosed once other causes of the weakness have been ruled out. Your veterinarian will most likely rule out herniated intervertebral disks, tumors, cysts, infections, injuries, and stroke. There is no definitive testing available for diagnosing degenerative myelopathy; the only way to confirm the diagnosis is when an autopsy is performed and the spinal cord is examined. What Treatment Options are Available for Degenerative Myelopathy There are currently no available treatment options for dogs affected by degenerative myelopathy; nothing has shown evidence of stopping or slowing the progression of this disease. There are a few ways that you can improve the quality of life for dogs affected by degenerative myelopathy Treatment options include…. Your French bulldog may not want to lie down Unusual movements Pain in the neck or throat Esophagitis will usually mean a trip to the vet for your Frenchie and the condition can usually be managed with medicine or a change in diet. A high in carbs and low fat diet that contains low protein foods with no allergens in them can help heal the oesophagus. Antacids may be prescribed along with other drugs to help your French bulldog swallow. In extreme cases a balloon catheter can be installed to help manage the narrowing of the oesophagus. This condition is often hereditary and diagnosed by barium swallows and x-rays, so again this will mean another trip to the vet for your four-legged friend. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this problem and will have to be managed over the life of your Frenchie. Managing it is not particularly easy. It requires your dog to be in a vertical and upright position whilst feeding and drinking. Hiatal hernia A hiatal hernia is usually detected when your dog is exercising or particularly excited. This causes an opening in the diaphragm called the oesophageal hiatus which the oesophagus passed through prior to entering the stomach. A hernia can sometimes develop in this location due to an issue caused by one of the below: A protrusion of the oesophagus Lower oesophageal sphincter Part of the stomach A hiatal hernia will mean a trip to the vet again for your French bulldog and quite possibly some surgery. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also be used to help reduce inflammation inside the oesophagus. However medication will only reduce the frequency and severity of the hiatal hernia but will not remove it totally. Surgery may be needed to put the oesophagus and stomach back to what is considered the normal position. What are common general sickness symptoms in my Frenchie? A puppy will show he is sick primarily by being extremely lethargic and unresponsive to his food. Since puppies love playing and food, both of these signs can be cause for concern. Of course, there are other symptoms, such as weight loss or lack of weight gain, since puppies are still growing , whining and panting, and vomiting. Sick adult Frenchies will show the same lethargy and lack of interest in food. However, you can also spot other symptoms a little easier—for example, restlessness, trouble urinating, fever, breathing problems, and pale gums. This is part of being a responsible pet parent. The other question to take a look at in recognizing sickness symptoms is paying attention to whether your French Bulldog is sick with a cold, flu, respiratory illness, etc. Since French Bulldogs commonly have allergies, understanding how to distinguish allergic reactions from illnesses through understanding the symptoms is essential! Is my French Bulldog stomach sick? Have you noticed that your sweet French Bulldog is shaking all of a sudden? Most pet parents assume that it is anxiety or over-excitement. FOr example, shaking could be shivering, and it could mean that your dog has a fever. Shaking with panting could also be a sign that your dog is in pain. Speaking of which… What should I do if my Frenchie is sick? Feeling a little panicky? Their playful and affectionate nature, and quirky antics have seen this breed become the third most popular dog breed in Australia! Do French Bulldogs have health problems? Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome and allergies are also some of the more common health problems that French Bulldogs experience. Many of these issues persist throughout their lifetime, significantly impacting their quality of life and leading to extensive veterinary expenses. The most common French Bulldog health problems include: Allergies Similar to humans, all dog breeds are susceptible to allergies. Unfortunately, Frenchies are genetically more susceptible to chronic allergies including food and environmental allergies. Symptoms of allergies in your Frenchies include: Excessive itching or licking, especially of the paws. Watery eyes, ear infections or sneezing. Diarrhoea, bloody or smelly stools, vomiting, abdominal pain, weight loss, inappetence or lethargy. If you suspect your Frenchie has an allergy, veterinary advice should be sought to diagnose the allergen. This will then allow for appropriate management strategy dietary, environmental or medication to be put in place to improve their quality of life. As the name suggests, this form of dermatitis can occur in other folded areas of skin, including the armpits, neck and vulva. Signs of skin fold dermatitis that owners can look out for include: Excessive scratching, biting and itching around folded areas of skin. Development of redness and sores around affected skin. Luckily, pyodermas are very easily treated with topical or oral antibiotics from your veterinarian. Similar to skin fold dermatitis, signs of pyoderma include: Itching around the wounded area. Development of redness, loss of hair, crusting or pussy discharge from the wounded area. The best way to prevent skin fold dermatitis and pyoderma is regular and careful cleaning and drying of skin folds with pet approved products. Otitis Externa The highly desirable flat face of the Frenchie often means they have smaller ear canals. These narrow canals mean Frenchies lose the ability to naturally clean their ears resulting in their canals remaining warm and wet. This provides an environment that promotes yeast and bacteria growth, leading to ear infections or otitis externa. Symptoms of ear infections include: Excessive scratching of the ear or head shaking. Redness or scratches inside the ears. Excess wax when cleaning the ears. Keeping your Frenchies ears clean and moisture free is the best way to prevent ear infections. Your veterinarian will be able to show you the best way to clean and dry your Frenchies ears with pet approved products. Conjunctivitis Pinkeye and Corneal Ulcers The flat face appearance of the Frenchie makes them more susceptible to conjunctivitis. Also known as pinkeye, conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, other irritants or a condition known as dry eye. Additionally, the large, prominent eyes of a Frenchie mean their eyes are more prone to scratches and ulcers. Signs to watch out for that can indicate conjunctivitis or corneal ulcers in your Frenchie include: Red or swollen eyes or discharge from the eyes. Pawing at the eyes, blinking or squinting. Ensuring your Frenchies eyes are kept clean and avoiding irritants getting in their eyes such as dust or sand will help prevent these eye conditions. Their short snouts mean the soft palate is too long in length, causing wind pipe obstruction. Another component of BAS is stenotic or narrow nostrils, resulting in a degraded ability to breathe through their nose. Retching, regurgitation and vomiting. Exercise intolerance and intolerance to heat. Maintaining your Frenchie at a healthy weight is one way of minimising the effects of BAS however, surgery is the best of improving a Frenchies quality of life. Surgical correction involves shortening of the soft palate and widening of the nostrils to help increase air flow to the lungs. Heat Stroke Did you know flat faced dogs, including the French Bulldog, are twice as likely to suffer from heat stroke? Their long soft palate and stenotic nares make breathing difficult for these brachycephalics, in turn affecting their ability to cool themselves down. This results in flat faced breeds overheating quickly and suffering from heat stress, potentially culminating in heatstroke. In hot or humid weather, your Frenchie should be kept in a cool or air-conditioned space to avoid them overheating. Signs your Frenchie may be suffering from heat stress or heatstroke includes: Excessive panting. Blue or bright red gums. Vomiting, diarrhoea or convulsions. If your Frenchie starts showing any of the above signs they should be immediately moved to a cooler area and cool not cold water should be run over their body, especially the back of their head and neck. Veterinary assistance should also be sought as soon as possible. This occurs when the knee cap or patella is dislocated from its groove at the front of the stifle knee joint. Signs that your Frenchie may suffer from patella luxation include: Occasional skipping or abnormal hindlimb movement. Sudden or hindlimb lameness. Surgery to deepen the groove the patella sits in is an extremely effective way of treating this condition. If left untreated, patella luxation can lead to osteoarthritis due to repeated damage of the patella to the inside lining of the joint. Hip Dysplasia Hip Dysplasia is another genetic condition Frenchies are prone to and results in the ball and socket hip joint not developing properly. This leads to joint deterioration as the hip joint rubs and grinds as opposed to sliding smoothly. Environmental factors such as obesity as well as excessive growth and exercise also contribute to the progression of Hip Dysplasia. Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia include: Bunny hopping, decreased activity or difficulty standing up. Hip pain or sensitivity. Inability to climb stairs. Avoiding over exercising and over eating when your Frenchie is a young pup as well as maintaining a healthy diet and weight will assist in preventing the progression of Hip Dysplasia. Arched or hunched posture, crying out when touched or picked up. Sudden paralysis. Keeping your Frenchie at a healthy weight as well as preventing jumping on and off furniture slows the progression of Intervertebral Disc Disease. If your Frenchie shows signs of paralysis they must be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. The selection of an ethical and reputable Frenchie breeder will greatly reduce the risks of your French Bulldog suffering from major health issues; however, the highly desirable flat faced appearance of the Frenchie means not all health problems can be eliminated. Height: 26 inches Ratio: .This should give you their height. For example, 26 inches times 0. Using the other example, .Since each dog is going to be different, you need to look at their overall body condition rather than a weight range. Fortunately, there are body conditioning charts that you can use to figure out if your German Shepherd is at their ideal weight. Just look at them from the side and from above, feeling for ribs and pelvic bones when necessary. Younger dogs will also typically be on the thin side before they fully fill out as adults. Years of line breeding has produced several distinct types of Shepherds. Show dogs are known for a sloped back in which the back legs are shorter than the front. This unnatural formation can cause back and hip problems along with an abnormal gait. German Shepherds bred for show will also be thinner than their hardworking cousins. As you can see in this picture, this is a show-bred German Shepherd with an obvious curved back and short back legs. Working dogs, on the other hand, are bred for a sturdy, straight back so they can work long hours without getting sore. They tend to be thicker than show dogs and will, therefore, weigh more, even at the same height. As you can see in this picture, this dog has a straighter back and longer back legs, so it has been bred for working. Something else I wanted to mention here is that, according to some sources, Black German Shepherds are larger than their bi-colored cousins, despite being otherwise the same. So, if you have one of these rare and beautiful creatures, you can follow the same charts that were listed above. If your German Shepherd is diagnosed by a veterinarian as underweight or overweight for their age, then the first thing you should do is ask him or her to help you figure out the underlying cause of the problem. This will determine what should be done next. Do you have a giant German Shepherd? What about a tiny one? Comment below to tell us more about it! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. American German shepherds have straighter backs then German shepherds. If you have a german shepherd and their lineages are close to their German roots they will have that arch in their back. Blondi played a role in Nazi propaganda by portraying Hitler as an animal lover. Dogs like Blondi were coveted as "germanische Urhunde", being close to the wolf, and became very fashionable during the Nazi era. Werner Haase to test one on Blondi, who died as a result. Adolf Hitler named one of the puppies "Wulf", his favorite nickname and the meaning of his own first name, Adolf "noble wolf" , [14] and he began to train her. Eva sent Gretl a letter containing a photo of Blondi and three of her puppies, Gretl's being indicated with an arrow. Hitler had great affection for the dog, and when he was not on duty at the front, he would spend much of his free time playing with the dog in the barracks. Hitler was profoundly distraught when he lost him in August .However, the dog managed to escape and return to him. Hitler, who adored the loyalty and obedience of the dog, thereafter developed a great liking for the breed. In some photos taken during the s the younger Blonda is incorrectly labeled as Blondi in most cases photograph inscriptions were written later. She usually kept them away from Blondi. This, along with the fact that the Soviet Red Army was closing in on his location, strengthened Hitler in his resolve not to allow himself or his wife to be captured. That afternoon, Hitler expressed doubts about the cyanide capsules he had received through Heinrich Himmler 's SS. To verify the capsules' contents, Hitler—who already intended to have Blondi killed so that she did not fall into the hands of the Soviets—ordered Dr. Werner Haase to test one on Blondi, and the dog died as a result. He also killed Eva Braun's two dogs, Gerda Christian 's dogs, and his own dachshund. Tornow was later captured by the Allies. Should I be booking spay or neuter surgery? A one year old German Shepherd is nearly full-sized physically, but emotionally they still have a lot of maturing to do. How much should a 1 year old German Shepherd weigh? A male German Shepherd typically weighs between 60 and 84 pounds on his first birthday. And a one year old female German Shepherd usually weighs between 46 and 68 pounds. Since females mature faster than males, her weight on her first birthday is closer to her final adult weight than her brothers are. When do German Shepherds stop growing? In fact, females may only gain a couple more pounds after her first birthday — the ideal weight range for adult female GSDs is 50 to 70 pounds. Male German Shepherds also stop gaining weight as rapidly after they turn one. But, in common with other large and giant dog breeds, this tends to be a pause, rather than an end to growing. Fully grown male GSDs weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. German Shepherd puppies need a diet which is specific to their age, and predicted adult weight. And the smallest females are likely to be fully grown. This article can help you choose an adult diet for your year-old German Shepherd. If possible, transition your dog onto their new diet gradually over a period of several days. Give them 3 parts old food to 1 part new food on days 1 and 2. Then equal parts old and new food on days 3 and 4. And finally, 1 part old food to 3 parts new food on days 5 and 6, before ditching the old food altogether. Your puppy is now eating like an adult! German Shepherds were originally developed as the ultimate herding and guardian breed, and guardian breeds tend to reach emotional maturity later than other dogs. As working dogs, this results in a longer window to form a close social bond with their flock — which gives them the emotional motivation to defend it against large predators. Their temperament is going to continue developing for many months yet. One study of German Shepherd behavioral development found that confidence continues to increase significantly between their 1st and 3rd birthdays. There is also a corresponding decline in nervousness and jumpy reactions. There are some traits we think of as being innately German Shepherd, but nurture is just as important as nature in determining how friendly or reserved, cooperative or stubborn, bold or shy, your GSD is. Keep building up a pattern of positive experiences with places, people and other animals. And use training to build their confidence and make cooperation with you rewarding. Training a 1 year old German Shepherd Your year old German Shepherd Dog may look fully grown, but emotionally they are still immature, and their confidence is still under developed. Pugs were first domesticated in China during the Han era B. According to some historians, they are descended from the Tibetan Mastiffs. The Chinese Emperors treasured them, and they lived in lavish homes, occasionally even with troops on duty to protect them. Pugs were brought to the United States just after the Civil War, and the American Kennel Club officially recognized them as a breed in .Pugs were initially quite well-liked, but by the turn of the century, sentiment had changed. But even in those small bodies, a lot of stuff can be happening. Pugs go through a lot of physical and mental changes during the first year of their life. Their development is pretty rapid and they can sometimes reach full adult size at just nine months of age. But what exactly happens in those months? And how do Pug puppies behave in certain periods? Puppies will be toothless, blind, and deaf at this age, but they will have a sense of taste and touch. Thanks to a lifestyle consisting of exclusively nursing and napping, they will develop and grow swiftly. Your pug puppies should perk up and start to interact more by the time they are three weeks old. They should be able to get out of bed and go potty on their own, since they will start to have some control over their bladder. By the time they are eight weeks old, they can start some proper house training , and by nine weeks, they can start learning basic commands. When it comes to their size, they should already weigh around six pounds by this point. This indicates that your puppy will be losing teeth as well. A 6-month-old pug will closely resemble a full-grown adult in its physique, but the development process is not yet quite over. It should already weigh close to 18 pounds, but keep in mind that some dogs are slightly bigger or smaller than others. By now, your puppy should have finished teething. To help maintain your puppy as healthy as possible, you must keep him active and stimulated. From Nine Months To One Year Most Pugs are fully physically formed and close to their full adult weight by the time they are nine months old. However, some of them can still continue to add a little bit of weight past this mark. Offer plenty of opportunity for exercise, because Pugs like being active, and due to their unique physical build, they need to stay as slim as possible. The eventual weight of an adult pug will be strongly influenced by his gender, the quantity of exercise it gets, and the kind of food it consumes. Nevertheless, the weight of an adult pug can range from 14 to over 18 pounds. Being little dogs, even a few pounds make a difference. There is a basic average range associated with the breed, but not every Pug will end up being the same height and weight. Furthermore, the weight chart that we provided is mostly referential for standard-size Pugs and not taking into account the special case of teacup Pugs. This is due to the fact that it is hard to anticipate the growth of the puppies to within an inch or pound because there are so many diverse elements that in the end determine their development. In other instances, it may even enable you to identify early signs of anomalies or health problems. We can roughly divide those factors into two distinct categories: internal and external. Internal Factors Internal factors that impact the growth of a Pug are those that are embedded within the dog as soon as, or even before, it is born. This is what nature has given the pup, and there is nothing you can do to change or influence it. However, knowing these details and the effect they have on puppy development can help you prepare and anticipate certain things. The two biggest internal elements that shape the growth of a Pug are its genetic makeup and its gender. Genetics The height and tendency to gain weight of your pug can be influenced by genetics. Pugs could exercise frequently, just like people, yet still, gain weight. Your dog will naturally be smaller if he is the runt of the litter. Male pugs stand between ten and thirteen inches tall and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds, while females are slightly smaller, with their average height being twelve inches, and the average weight between 13 and 16 pounds. As you might have guessed, the two biggest external factors in determining the growth of a Pug are nutrition and exercise. There are a lot of different dog foods out there, and some of them contain fillers or additives that are actually unhealthy for Pugs to consume. Your dog has to be fed multiple times per day, but be mindful of the type and the amount of food. Pugs may not be the most active dogs, but they still need enough walks, play and exercise to stay healthy. They are probably lighter as they move more. Their general health will improve, which is crucial for growing puppies. In order to be healthy, your puppy also has to receive vaccinations and be fed consistently. Pug Health Problems Numerous health problems can affect pugs, and a lot of them are the result of their brachycephalic conformations. They share those issues with some other breeds who have a similar head and body shape, for example, the Bulldogs. Fortunately, your veterinarian can help you manage many of their potential health issues. Some of them can even be detected early on by using DNA tests. But since this is an article about Pug growth, we want to focus on health issues that are related to weight, in particular. Overweight Pugs Pugs have a tendency to put on excess weight. They are opportunistic eaters who munch on everything that comes their way and this increases their propensity for obesity. Pugs could also get overweight if their diet is not controlled, if the food is of low quality, or if they are not active enough. If your Pug is healthy, you can help it lose weight by taking the following actions: — Cut back on the serving sizes. The most frequent causes of being underweight in Pugs are various parasites, diabetes and other medical conditions , teeth problems, as well as a poor diet. There are a few at-home remedies you might try after your veterinarian has ruled out an underlying illness. You should start by switching to high-quality dog food. Pugs can be picky eaters, but high-quality dog food from a premium brand should work. After that, you have to make sure to give them smaller meals, but more frequently. Before feeding your pug again, give it some time to digest the last meal. To speed up the process, you might add some nutritious weight-gain snacks to these meals. Finally, make sure to give your pug a thorough workout. Although it may seem contradictory, exercise will aid in the development of muscles and boost hunger. Just be careful not to overwork it because that would be counterproductive. Its weight is perhaps the most important one, but there are others, as well. For example, you might want to know its neck and chest circumference in order to buy the best possible harness. In the following section, we will explain how to perform some of the most common measurements on your Pug. After that, you should weigh it once every six months. You should weigh your Pug more frequently if they have any medical issues because some illnesses can result in weight shifts. To weigh your Pug at home, you will need a bathroom scale. If your dog is calm and disciplined enough, you can just put it on the scale and note the reading. Simply step on the scale yourself, while carrying your Pug, then note the reading. Next, weigh yourself without the Pug by your side. Just keep in mind to measure a dog from the paws to the withers, not to the head. The procedure is as follows: 1. Position your Pug directly against a wall or doorframe. Locate the withers of your Pug. Calculate how far the pencil mark is from the floor. Pugs typically have necks that range in size from 12 to 16 inches on average. Two scales — either 1 to 5 or 1 to 9 — can be used to get the BCS. This implies that while your Pug has a thin layer of fat covering its entire body, its ribs can easily be felt with the fingertips and its waistline and stomach tuck are both visible to the eye. You need to be able to predict their height and weight correctly so that you are able to account for this. Not to mention all the other factors that need your focus, including your diet, degree of exercise, training, etc. Knowing how big and heavy your Pug should be at a certain age will help you plan its diet, living space, as well as your budget. We compete primarily in AKC conformation events show ring but are proud to have bred dogs that do it all. Breeding a litter should begin with knowledge. Our Labradors are our love and our hobby. We feel there is an "ART" to producing a special litter. Every litter is planned with a goal and purpose. Our litters are thought through with the research of pedigrees and we choose the stud dogs who will best compliment our girls. We strive to produce healthy Labs that are expressive and intelligent. We also want our Labs to be strong retrievers with the beauty of correct conformation. Most of all we want our Labs to portray the sweet loving temperament that they are well known for. About Us Thank you for visiting Trinity Labradors. We are thrilled to show you our family and share some of the many blessings we have received over the past twenty-one years. Trinity Labradors began in and has had many wonderful accomplishments through the years. Dogs help children to be more physically fit. All dogs, regardless of breed, need to be walked. Children who take their dogs for regularly scheduled walks tend to exercise more than those who have no reason to get up off the couch and leave the TV. The Journal of Physical Activity and Health concluded that people who walk their dogs generally walk about an hour longer per day than non-dog walkers. In this age where over one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, exercise is no longer merely a choice of leisure activity, it is a necessity Center for Disease Control and Prevention, .What more pleasurable way for a child to exercise than to run and play with an adored dog? All dogs need exercise regardless of size, so children include dogs when they are running or playing casually—not just on regularly scheduled walks. One of the reasons that I suggest retrievers when parents ask about what kind of dog is best is simply the name. Of course, I grew up with retrievers and I love them, but even more than other dogs, they love to play ball. Be sure to read the rest of her seven part article, Ten Reasons to Own a Dog. black labrador puppies for sale in virginia - Have Questions? Retriever, Poodle, Microdoodle! The Micro Goldendoodle inherits an extra measure of those special poodle traits we love in our Goldendoodle Puppies. It's important to note that this unique parent breed ratio doesn't necessarily make the Goldendoodle look or act more like a Poodle than a Golden Retriever. black labrador puppies for sale in virginia - Y Overview While many owners are concerned about a dog being too vocal, it is not uncommon for just the opposite to happen. Is it normal for a Boxer dog to not bark at all? If your Boxer puppy or older dog is super quiet and doesn't respond to any triggers by barking, does this mean that something is wrong? Here we'll discuss why a Boxer may be very quiet and why some Boxers are very laid back. We'll also touch on the subject of training a Boxer to bark at the door and if this is a good idea. First, Rule Out Other Issues Most applicable to white Boxers, but something that should be checked with any colored Boxer, is the possibility of hearing issues. If a dog is not hearing any triggers, he may not be vocal. That aside, there can an issue with the vocal cords or larynx. Dogs that have had a lot of strain on the neck due to choke collars can have nerve damage to the pharynx and larynx that could limit their ability to bark. While these issues are often accompanied by breathing issues, not barking is indeed one of the symptoms. Much more than adults, they are often lost in the moment and may have trouble focusing. For this same reason, a young Boxer puppy may seem perfectly okay when left home alone, but issues of separation anxiety may develop as he grows older and fully realizes what is happening. From the age of 8 weeks to just about the 5 month mark, it is not all that uncommon for just about nothing to bother a puppy. At this age , he may not be aware enough of his extended world to find a reason to bark. If his needs are being met interaction, plenty of toys, food, water, warmth, comfort he may not bark at all and this is perfectly normal. In fact, if your Boxer puppy doesn't bark, consider yourself very lucky and do know that this may change very soon. In regard to age related reasons of not barking, senior Boxers may also be exceedingly quiet. For some older dogs, the triggers that used to cause barking are old news. Those squirrels? Seen them thousands of times, no big deal. The mailman who comes up to the front steps? Well, he's done it about times and so far he's never actually broken into the house, so no reason to bark anymore; I trust him. The senior Boxer has heard it all, seen it all and has been exposed to just about every event, situation and element that he is likely to encounter. So, if a senior Boxer doesn't bark, this is usually just a sign that the dog is relaxed, confident with his environment and generally a pretty happy canine family member. While it's highly recommended to expose your Boxer to as many stimuli as possible so that he can learn about the world and all that is in it, in some cases a Boxer may not be introduced to anything that would trigger barking. If a dog is at home most of the time and is only taken outside for walks in a very quiet neighborhood, he may not bark simply because he has not been presented with a reason to do so. In addition, all needs are being met and the dog is feeling content. It is however, suggested to start bringing the dog to new places and to expose him to other people and other dogs; this is not done to make a Boxer bark but rather is healthy socialization to the world so that he can learn how to react and learn to handle himself well in situations outside of the house and immediate area. What's really cool about dogs is that every one is so unique and even with a particular breed like the Boxer, there's some that are hyped up, some that are super calm and many that are somewhere in-between. There's some that will only bark at really random things like when an owner sings or when seeing just one particular type of person. It just means that the dog has a calm personality; he's not bothered by things and is displaying easy-going behavior. While an owner may wish for their Boxer to at least bark at strangers that come up to the house more on this ahead , you may just want to consider yourself lucky. While behavior can be a bit unpredictable with rescues, many will have inhibited behavior which manifests as being really quiet, not barking, acting shy, timid and even showing signs of anxiety or fear. We rescued a dog that was about 10 years old and the previous 'owner' claimed the dog was mute. He didn't make a noise for a full 6 months; when he finally did and it wasn't really quite a bark, it was more like a 'booop' sound , we just about had a heart attack and then celebrated that he found his voice. Even so, he was always a rather quiet dog, never really barking at anything and only making soft noises when he did want to vocalize. Should You Train a Boxer to Bark? Here's the thing about teaching a dog to bark. To do this, you have to increase his level of territorial awareness and encourage the dog to become frustrated enough to bark at a trigger. And once this behavior is praised and rewarded, it often can domino to many other elements. If you want to train your Boxer to bark when someone's at the door, this can develop into him barking at other people in all other situations and even to other triggers like cars and other animals… and you may find yourself wishing you were just content with a quiet dog. With this warning well in place, if you do want to train your Boxer to bark, it can be done. This is for owners who want their dog to bark when strangers approach the house, simply to announce to them that a dog is indeed present. How to Teach a Boxer to Bark Keep in mind that this training is only to bark if someone is outside the house at the door and in no way involves any sort of aggression that would lead to biting or out-of-control behavior. You'll need an assistant to be outside. Your helper should announce his arrival with 2 to 3 rings or 5 seconds of noise… wait for a count of 15 and then repeat. You'll be ready inside with your Boxer, with treats hidden in your pocket but easy to access. Be sure to use something special that would not usually be given. Crisp, microwaved bacon often works well be sure to blot out the grease and to have this in a zipped plastic bag so that your Boxer can't pick up the scent. Be in a relaxed vibe, giving no indication at all that anything is about to happen. When the noise begins, immediately jump up and in a very serious and concerned voice, say' What is that? Some Boxers move into a more alert mood if the owner does a 'stage' whisper. If your Boxer does not bark at all for these sorts of things, expect him to be rather confused in the beginning. He may pace a bit and even may make a soft whining noise. At first, that is all that is needed, just for him to be aware that someone making noise at the door was cause to be alert. Give him a pat and then be sure to change the vibe to a relaxed one. You can let in your helper and be sure to speak in a happy tone to that person to convey that after being on alert, the visitor can turn out to be a friendly one that is welcomed into the home. As you move on, at some point your Boxer will let out a bark and at that point, you'll give the special treat immediately. It's important that the treat be given within just a second of the bark, so that the dog realizes exactly what he's being rewarded for and importantly, learns that no more is needed nor expected. Be sure to use a 'release' word such as 'Okay' or 'Clear' and then use a happy, relaxed voice to indicate that there is not a threat. If at any time your Boxer seems anxious instead of simply alert or gets too revved up, it will be time to stop this sort of training, since you really don't want to risk your dog's normally happy state of mind simply to get him to bark Summary If your Boxer puppy does not bark, he may very well outgrow this and it's recommended to not encourage barking since it can spiral out of control. If you wish to teach your normally quiet Boxer dog to bark at the door or another trigger, do be careful and stop if aggression is shown. Remember that refraining from barking is not a bad quality to have. Having a calm, content and relaxed dog that feels comfortable with his environment is much more appealing than a dog that barks at every little thing. This is not a breed that should be expected to intimidate people; even if his size and a bark caused someone to stand at attention, his wet sloppy kisses and expressive eyes would give away his friendly personality soon afterward. Boxer Barking Overview This breed is rambunctious and vocal during the puppy years and adult Boxers are capable of very deep barking. Most Boxers make for excellent watch dogs, so do expect some territorial barking in regard to certain triggers. However, excessive barking should be addressed as soon as it starts, otherwise things can get out of control. Many owners wonder how much barking is normal and why it seems that a Boxer will bark for no apparent reason. Though dealing with barking may seem overwhelming, luckily, once you understand all of the possible causes some you may have never thought of action can be taken and training can begin to correct your dog's behavior. So let's dive in to understand this issue and see if and when you can take steps to control this. Many people are aware that a dog's hearing is much more keen than a humans. How much more? A Boxer can hear detect noises that you will never be able to hear; these will be those of a higher frequency. Noises can be heard at frequencies approximately twice the range of humans. They will hear anything up to 60Hz compared to humans top capacity of 20Hz. Hz stands for Hertz; and 1 Hertz equals 1 vibration per each second. Also, a Boxer will pick up on noises that originate at a further distance than the human ear can detect. Therefore, when your dog is barking loudly and seems to be on alert, there is a good chance that they are detecting an unfamiliar noise and associating it with potential danger. Training Solution. The Boxer makes for a very good watch dog. It is wise to not dismiss barking in the case that your dog may be displaying correct behavior in attempting to warn you. If you quiet your dog down each time he tries to warn you, this may backfire. If your dog eventually learns that barking to warn you is un-wanted behavior, you may find yourself with a silent dog while an unwanted "guest" is breaking into your home. Appreciate this type of bark. When your Boxer barks, take a look around the home and outside. If there is indeed a stranger walking by or on your property, even if it is the neighbor retrieving something from your yard, let your dog know that you appreciate the warning. A quick pat and a "good dog" will instill your approval that the warning bark was welcomed. If you see no danger and there is not a valid reason for the barking, you should then train your dog to quiet down. They may be barking because of a car alarm 6 blocks down or a bird feet away. Your dog can be taught that this type of barking is not appropriate. It is important that you do so in a calm manner. When an owner yells or becomes frustrated, this simply makes the puppy or dog think that their human family member agrees with the barking and is making a commotion also! It is your actions and reactions that will show your Boxer that their barking is unwarranted. This is done by gently patting him or her; not in a reward action, but in a calming motion. The tone of your voice must be calm and relaxed, as you give your Boxer a pre-planned command word. The most common and effective word is "Shh" or "Calm Down". The command should be short. Dogs only pay attention to the first syllable of words. If you make your command a long sentence, you will confuse your Boxer and be speaking to no one. Self protection barking will ensue when a dog feels that his belongings are in danger. A dog can become very attached to his toys, dog bed, blankets or other objects that he uses daily. Your dog's things should not be rearranged or bothered with, other than to clean them. A Boxer will also become protective of his food and water. The eating area should quiet and out of the way of foot traffic. Boredom is often the cause of barking and whining problems ; many owners falsely assume that a dog leads a simple life and does not need stimulation and socialization like humans do. Most often these 2 elements will combine. However a dog will feel neglected or bored if: He is left alone for long periods of time He is not taken outside for a good burst of exercise at least once per day He is not receiving interaction with humans, such as play Interactive and interesting toys are not available Training Solution. There should be a daily schedule that your dog can depend on. This should include daily walks, exercise , play and interaction with his owner or owners. If you go for walks each day, spend some time throwing a ball to him, wrestle around, give him baths, groom him and talk to him while you go about your business in the home, he will receive the stimuli that is needed. This is best if a certain time is chosen for each activity. For example, a walk in the morning and a half hour of fetch every evening 1 or 2 hours after dinner. Once he is internally satisfied that he is receiving attention and can count on interaction and exercise, a dog will usually be more than happy to settle down at other times to play with his toys or just relax. Having a great selection of toys is vital for all but the oldest of senior dogs; these are not just for pups. Dogs of all ages should have interesting and interactive toys. Kongs and others that hold treats hidden inside can keep a dog busy for hours. Illness or Injury When a dog barks or bites and this behavior is completely out of their normal behavior, it may be because the dog is in pain. Canines often feel vulnerable when weak and will act out in this way. If your dog suddenly displays behavior that is out of character, it is best to bring him for a complete examination with his veterinarian. Never just go by clinical symptoms and factor in behavior as well when assessing if a vet visit is warranted.
