I grew up with dogs all my life. When I was 10 our family got a wonderful boxer, and when I turned 16 we got a Rottweiler named Arko. A close friend of the family took him for schutzhund training because we needed a protection dog for our company. My interest and fascination with the sport of schutzhund took off. At age 18, I bought my first dog, a German Shepherd. I had fallen in love with the breed for their looks and intelligence. I started my career in Schutzhund and Marysville dog training with Vasko, a German Shepherd with working bloodlines. After I got her titles and breed survey, I bred Banja to Vasko and had my first litter of pups. I kept a male pup from this breeding and named him Kim. I trained Kim to a SchH 3. There are some pretty interesting facts about these unique coats that you need to know before you get one for yourself. What Is a Brindle French Bulldog? While the French Bulldogs come in a variety of colors, the most striking ones are the ones with that special brindle coat. Brindle French bulldog has this dazzling pattern compared to a regular Frenchie. This brindle pattern is known for its darkness. The twisting stripe pattern of colors is so much darker than the typical base color of their coat, with a bit of a blend of lighter hair throughout the coat. However, the most common are the ones with darker and lighter colors, but there are other colors too with different features and mainly patterns. Brindle French Bulldogs This is the common coat color, with a darker coat with a mixture of lighter hair. Seal Brindle French Bulldogs The seal brindle is mostly comparable to a typical Brindle with a few white hairs; it mostly looks similar to a pure black french bulldog. Most of the time, the coat looks grey, though. Chocolate Brindle French Bulldogs Chocolate brindle, as the name suggests, has a chocolate brown color with a slight mixture of a milky color; they have blue eyes while the nose and nails are brown. As with all Frenchies, the brindle French Bulldog is a ton of fun to own, but there are some important considerations to make before you can decide this breed is right for your lifestyle. Depending on the mixture of the dark and fawn hairs, Brindle Frenchies can be very dark or very light. They usually have a black nose and dark colored eyes. Brindle is by far the oldest and most common pattern in French Bulldogs. To this day, it is one of the few accepted colors and patterns by kennel clubs along with fawn, white and pied as opposed to blue, chocolate and lilac colors. Blue Brindle French Bulldogs Blue Brindle Frenchies are known to have a blue grayish color coat along with a light brindle pattern. Tiger Brindle French Bulldogs Tiger Brindles often resemble that of a tiger with their dark color coat and dense pattern of white hair. These lighter colors can sometimes go unnoticed, and they can be mistaken for one color bulldogs. Are Brindle French Bulldogs Purebred? According to the AKC, acceptable colors include fawn, white, brindle, and brindle and white. The reason they are on the more expensive side is that French Bulldogs are often difficult to breed. Common Health Problems of a Brindle French Bulldog The decision to get a French Bulldog is not one that should be taken lightly due to their complicated history with genetic health conditions. The amount of Brindle appearing on a dog can vary wildly which leads to some being described as Reverse Brindle. Whilst these parts of the Frenchie will not be Brindle it does not stop the rest of the coat from showing the Brindle effect. This can result in the darker areas of coat being Brindle with White areas. This can create a very unique look in that there are patterned spotted areas on a most white dog. Similar to other shades these can also be affected by the brindle pattern. You will however be able to note brindling of the Lilac coloring. This relates to the Brown gene also known as Testable Chocolate and the Cocoa gene. These are very similar in looks and the only way to tell the difference is usually through a DNA test. You should expect to see lighter shades of chocolate mixed in with darker in this coloring. A standard brindle Frenchie is likely to be the cheapest type of French Bulldog available. Once you start mixing in rarer colors the price is likely to rise but still be below there non brindle versions. This is due to Brindle being undesirable in the eyes of a number of breeders who are breeding purely for coloring. The below gives an idea of the prices you should expect to see from a reputable breeder. However if they were crossbred then it is perfectly reasonable that those offspring could also be Brindle. It is therefore important if you want certainty to look at the lineage and you can also find out more information through DNA testing. Allergies Whilst not unique to Frenchies they are known to suffer more than other breeds. Also it can show through watery eyes, ear infections or sneezing. If you suspect allergy issues it is best to discuss with a vet around possible treatments. This usually results in snoring and noisy breathing. It can however lead to retching, regurgitaion and vomiting and it certainly lowers their tolerance to heat. Skin Fold Dermatitis Whilst we love their wrinkles and skinfolds it can lead to issues within these folds. Ear Infections Due to the shape of the French Bulldog they can have issues in keeping their ears clean. Often these areas become breeding grounds for bacteria. In order to clean them the first rule is not to put anything inside the ear, this often just compacts any dirt within the ear. It is best to use an ear cleaner to break down the dirt. Corneal Ulcers As a result of the eyes standing more predominately on their face they are at risk of eye issues. They can also be born with small amounts of tissue sticking out of their eye.
