Even though the guardians were now aware that this was conditioning him to jump up on them, they still occasionally reached over and patted him when he did jump up on them. To help with this issue, I showed his guardians how they can redirect the dog when he jumps up on them and place him into a sit using a hand motion. Due to having accidents, his guardians were trying to keep the dog in a bathroom behind a baby gate. So keeping the dog in the sequestered room for extended periods of times should be avoided. I suggested that the guardians bring him out of the gated bathroom after he had done his business. This lessens the likelihood of the dog having an accident in most cases. Before we got into the full potty training portion of the session, I wanted to give his guardians one last tool to help the dog learn to adopt desired actions and behaviors for the rest of his life. The puppy was asleep at the time that the guardian on the couch noticed that his anus seem to be expanding slightly. Sometimes puppies will develop fecal incontinence as a result of a poorly done tail docking or a botched spaying or neutering procedure. After the session, I spoke with a few vets that I consult with and they suggested that the vet prescribe the dog a round of Metronidazole which should kill any unwanted bacteria and provide an anti-inflammatory agent. If this drug does not alleviate the problem, it may be indicative of a physical issue that is causing his sphincter to loosen while in his sleep. But when dealing with unwanted behaviors, a good rule of thumb is to rule out physical or health issues first. Potty training a puppy can be one of the more stressful things for a new dog guardian to deal with. If you adopt a dog from a reputable breeder generally the pup will usually have mastered some of the potty training basics via its mother and siblings. Additionally the breeder did not give them an opportunity to see the area that Apollo was raised in. I spent the next few minutes going over the basics of potty training. The times that a a pup is most likely to need to eliminate; after eating, after heavy playtime and after waking up. I suggested that after anyone of these three things occurred that they take the puppy into the bathroom and sit inside it with him. Also when a dog gets up and races away from its sitting or laying down position, that can sometimes mean the dog needs to poop. So if the dog come up and starts jumping up, wandering in circles in front of them or barking, its a good idea to take the dog to the designated area. I usually like to give a puppy five minutes to do their business before I move on. Many people mistakenly think that if they leave their dog in the designated potty area for a lengthy period of time often hours that the dog will do its business. Then they are surprised and frustrated when they see the dog eliminate immediately after bringing it inside. What it comes to puppies, distraction is everywhere. When a dog is crate trained, I usually suggest placing the dog inside of the kennel and waiting 15 to 45 minutes before letting the puppy back out to the eliminate area to give them a chance to do their business again. The last time I potty trained a puppy mill dog, I found that I had the greatest success by taking the dog outside once an hour to go potty, then rewarding him richly when he did. By repeatedly returning to the area that the puppy pads are located in, we increase the odds of the dog eliminating in the right place. I also suggested that they leave one lump of fresh Apollo poop on the puppy pad in the bathroom. Sometimes leaving this visual and olfactory reminder in the designated location can help remind a dog of the need to eliminate. Another important factor when it comes to potty training is assigning the word with the act. Most of my clients mistakenly talk to their dog as if it speaks English. I repeat the command word in a calm tone and pace of speaking with a one second pause in between each iteration, making an effort to articulate the word consistently each time. Adding baby talk inflection, too loud a delivery or excitement to your voice can lead the dog to become confused. They had spread them all over the floor in the bathroom in the hopes that the quantity of puppy pads would increase the chances of the dog using them. The method that I prefer is to build a box that is large enough to encase the puppy pad with a little extra area on one side that is only large enough for the dog to sit or lie down in. This way the dog has no choice but to potty on the pad as there are no other options. The box should not have a roof, just walls that prevent the puppy from escaping. I make sure that I am nearby and observing the dog during this time so that I can immediately start repeating the command word as soon as I notice the dog starting to eliminate. To counter this problem I came up with a novel solution; I cheat. Generally speaking, most dogs pass water that they drink within about 45 minutes. If they let the dog food sit in the hot water for minutes before they give it to the dog, the kernels will soak up some of the water. Additionally the dog will find it difficult to eat the food until he drinks the water first. Usually i add an ounce or two of additional warm water right before i give it to the puppy. I usually put the dog into the designated potty area immediately after a meal as outlined in one of the three situations that a dog is most likely to eliminate. I have found that if you can repeat the command word while the dog eliminates every time it goes for about a week, you generally have the problem in hand. One final piece of advice that I offered the guardians was to start charting when they feed the dog as well as when the dog eliminated solid waste. Dogs generally have a fairly consistent digestive process. If his guardians start feeding him on a regular basis and chart when he makes a solid elimination, they will quickly identify the times when the dog is most likely to need to poop. Once this window of time is identified, then they can either place the dog in the designated elimination area or inside of the box at the appropriate time. If it is indeed a physical condition, then his guardians will need to work with their current vet or find a specialist to address the problem. By the end of the session, I was quite pleased to see that Apollo was starting to sit in front of his guardians for attention rather than jumping up on them. His energy level seemed a bit lower and more in control as well. I was also happy to see the reaction from his guardians as they witnessed him learning how to sit and come on command. Apollo really has a beautiful energy and is going to make a great dog if his guardians implement the proper rules, boundaries, structure and discipline at this stage in his life. With some time, love, patience and vigilance, Apollo should quickly pick up what his guardians want out of him. Less - The English Bulldog is a wide, medium-sized, compact dog with short legs. Their last week together will consist of plenty of socialization and playing. Most breeders will arrange a 7 week health check up with the vet to make sure your bundle of fluff is fit and healthy to go to their new home. In the UK some breeders will arrange for the pups first 8 week vaccination to take place during this check. Although some vets advise against it. By the end of this week German Shepherd puppies are ready to leave their mothers and move into their new homes for good. The week you get to take your new puppy home. Your 9 week old puppy will need four meals a day. Split these up throughout the day and try to stick to similar times. It is very important to socialise and expose your puppy to other humans, dogs and different scenarios whilst they are young. This maybe hard before your puppy has had all its vaccines however getting many different people to come and visit you at your home will enable them to get used to visitors. Before their full vaccinations you can also, you can take you German Shepherd puppy out and about with you to expose them to the outside world as long as you can carry them. If you live in the USA, your puppy will be due their second combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 9 weeks old. In the USA a minimum of three sets of the combined vaccine are required for your puppy. Although you cannot put your puppy down outside until after their final vaccination. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. This is great time for you to introduce them to the big wide world and develop their social skills which you have already been building the foundations. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can. This will help your German Shepherd puppy to grown into a confident well-rounded dog. At 3 months old your German Shepherd will go down from four daily meals to three. These three portions will be larger than what they are used to which may cause stomach upset. If your German Shepherd puppy does get an upset stomach, try going back to four smaller meals for a couple of days and they try the three larger portions again. This can be a challenging time as your adorable German Shepherd puppy turns into a furry crocodile. Luckily the teething stage is only a phase as with human babies and short lived. In most cases your puppy biting should stop around when they are around 7 months old and have their adult teeth. You maybe noticing your German Shepherds gorgeous ears fluctuating between floppy and pointy. By the time your puppy has finished teething their ears should tick up all the way. This usually happens around months. As they grow their cartilage becomes stronger. Some puppies need another month or so to help them cope without going out for frequent toilet breaks. Even when your German Shepherd puppy is toilet trained occasional accidents are normal. German Shepherds do have large ears but they tend to grow into them as they get older. German Shepherd puppies will begin to grow their new adult coat between 4 and 6 months old. To make way for their adult coat all the puppy hair has to go. For several weeks you will notice an increase in shedding. This is a completely normal part of growing up for your German Shepherd. Being a double coat breed German Shepherds dogs have a topcoat and an undercoat. Twice a year your pup will shed their undercoat. Usually in spring and again in fall. They also shed in general days a year so be prepared for a lot of fur! They will very much look like a smaller version of their adult selves. Many puppies and dogs need SOME grain in their food in order to maintain firm poop for life. Give about two tablespoons for a pound Golden Retriever. Puppies and 5 Star High Protein Dog Foods In our early years of breeding, we were committed to feeding the very best puppy foods to our puppies. We still have the same commitment. However, we have learned quite a bit about which foods actually are the very best. Anyway, for several years, we started our puppies on several of the most expensive foods on the market. Then, we used Acana before they changed their formula and moved their facility out of Canada. With almost every litter, there was at least one puppy that struggled with loose stools. To combat the stools, we added fiber either rice or pumpkin and the problem resolved. We decided to try a food with a little grain. We were pleasantly surprised that our puppies did much better on foods with some grain. Higher levels of meat protein are healthy for dogs. Dogs were created to eat meat. The higher the protein, the more loose poop you will see. However, higher amounts of meat protein also make a food more nutritious. You must feed the right balance of protein and fiber. When we started feeding TLC to our puppies, we had virtually no loose stools except for the very occasional bacterial overgrowth that is discussed in the next section. If changing foods, make sure you scroll down to read the section on how to change foods. Having firm poop is important. However, it is even more important that you not sacrifice on good nutrition. They are very similar. There are only two differences between the puppy food and the adult food. The first difference is that the puppy food has a little bit more protein and a little less grain. The second difference is that the adult food has glucosamine. For the purposes of controlling loose stools, the additional grain in the dog food is all that matters. These foods fix the loose poop because they are low in protein and high in fiber. These veterinary diets are fortified with the necessary vitamins because most of the primary ingredients have little intrinsic nutritional value of their own. Sensitive stomach foods can be a good temporary fix, but there is no reason to leave most puppies or dogs on such a food for life. Look for a food with SOME grain for the long term. However, it is highly unlikely that it is necessary to keep your dog on an extremely high fiber, low protein specialty diet for life. Dogs that are fed the same food on a daily basis will probably not have the correct kind of good bacteria in their gut to properly digest a brand new food. They need to be acclimated to the new food gradually over a few days instead of having an abrupt change. Adding probiotics will also make the food change go smoother and quicker if need be. Take it slow. Bacterial Overgrowth A third common cause of puppy diarrhea is bacterial overgrowth. All puppies and dogs have bacteria in their digestive track to some degree. A good immune system will keep these bacteria under control. However, bacteria will tend to overgrow in puppies and even in dogs in at least three different common conditions: when a dog is under stress, when he is habitually eating junk, or when he has a poor or immature immune system. Unfortunately, puppies often meet all three conditions, especially when first changing homes. Stress A very common cause of bacterial overgrowth is stress. Some of our dogs have had this type diarrhea occasionally when they first start going to dog shows. However, once we return home, the diarrhea goes away on its own and the more shows dogs go to the less likely they are to experience the accompanying diarrhea. It is also common for some puppies to experience diarrhea when first changing homes. Our socialization program at Summer Brook is so intensive that we have very few that experience diarrhea shortly after leaving us. However, if you have a puppy who started having diarrhea right after getting in your home, it very well could be that stress is causing an overgrowth of bacteria. Weakened or Immature Immune System The second cause of bacterial overgrowth is a weakened or immature immune system. Dogs who have been over-vaccinated or neutered early or fed a poor diet will be more likely to have weak immune systems. In addition, it takes time for young puppies to develop strong immune systems. Along with all the junk that puppies sometimes eat, there is going to be bacteria. As puppies get older, their immune system will take care of it and the gut bacteria will stay in check. You might also need to occasionally give your puppy a MILD antibiotic. However, we do not let diarrhea go on for more than a couple of days. Tylan If after two days, diarrhea is continuing, we like to use Tylan for bacterial overgrowth in puppies. If given early before diarrhea gets out of control, Tylan will get the bacteria back under control after the first dose. There is no need to continue giving the Tylan after the problem is resolved unlike with other antibiotics for other problems. You need to merely give your puppy a little help in controlling the bacteria. You can give it twice a day if necessary. Most veterinarians recommend Metronidazole Metro for short for these types of issues. However, we think that Metro is an overkill and is stronger than necessary. Tylan used to be sold over the counter until around or .It is a very safe antibiotics that is even prescribed for long periods of time for chronic problems. We are definitely not advocating long-term use of Tylan, but are merely pointing out its safety. Tylan has also been used to stop tear staining in small breeds with white coats. If it can safely be used over long periods of time without side effects for many dogs, I feel much more comfortable using it for occasional loose stools than I do in using Metro. Metro works, but so does Tylan. Probiotics Whenever giving antibiotics to dogs or to people for that matter , give a probiotic along with the antibiotic. The good bacteria in a healthy digestive tract is necessary for the proper digestion of the food. It is actually best to give the probiotic a few hours after giving the antibiotic.
