They are sometimes called Labralas and sometimes Viszladors. Vizsla and Vizslabrador are other nicknames that they are sometimes referred to as. They are obsessed with the water. The Vizsla Lab mix takes after both their parent breeds when it comes to spending time in the water. These dogs can efficiently hunt waterfowl. These dogs can do more than hunt and spend time in the family home. Like their parent breeds, they can be excellent service and rescue dogs with the right training. They love playing in the yard during the day and enjoy nothing more than a long snuggle when it is time to settle down in the evening. The Vizsla Lab is intelligent and easy to train, but training should be ongoing throughout their life to ensure proper behavior at home and out in public. Their happy-go-lucky personality makes them an awesome playmate for children. They can even handle a little teasing from the younger kids without getting aggressive or pushy. But it is believed that the Hungarian Vizsla Labrador mix was first bred when the Hungarian Vizsla dog was brought to the United States. This was most likely by the time World War II was coming to an end. Many years later, the interest in the breed began to escalate because of its amazing hunting abilities. The Vizsla was originally bred 1, years ago in Hungary as a hunting companion. That was its main purpose due to its dominant instinct to point and retrieve. Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, date back to the s in Newfoundland in Canada. These dogs were owned by fishermen, and their main purpose was to retrieve fish that had fallen from fishing hooks and pull back nets filled with fish. These two breeds share many similarities when it comes to their temperaments. This results in an offspring that will grow up to be highly intelligent, hardworking, and capable of being a hunting and working dog. It may look like a Vizsla with the features of a Labrador or the other way around. However, they typically have V-shaped ears, dark-colored noses, and short, straight coats. They either have a muscular or a thin and tall physique. Their coat colors can be rust, fawn, golden, cream, or black. They may also inherit the chocolate brown color of the Labrador. Moreover, this hybrid can also have either brown or amber eyes, depending on the parent breeds. A Vizsla Chocolate Lab mix is one of the most unique and eye-catching mixed dogs you can find. In spite of that, when they are mixed together, their offspring make up this perfect blend of physical features that looks beautifully balanced. For a male Vizsla Lab mix, it can grow at around 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 60 and 80 pounds. Since both the Vizsla and Labrador are considered medium-sized breeds, we can expect that the Vizsla Lab mix puppy will fully grow with a similar height and weight. Even this hybrid dog can walk around in an apartment-living kind of area. However, it can be an advantage if you own a house with a backyard. As long as they have an area they can freely run around to, and they are regularly taken outside for a trip or a long walk with their humans, they will be just fine and satisfied. This will also help to ensure that the future lineage will have healthy genes. It can either be single or double-coated. Double-coated Vizsladors usually have slight wavy hairs around their back. Coat color is typically rusty red. Black, chocolate, and various shades of yellow are also possible. The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail. Breed Standard GRCA Finding a Puppy Finding just the right puppy or adult for your household takes some homework, as not all puppies or breeders are created equal. Not all households can handle raising a puppy it can be a LOT of work!! After You Get Your Puppy Socialize Socialization is about safely exposing your puppy to as many things as you can, at least to those things that will be a part of their life with you. Precious, fluffy and small, Shih Poos have an average weight between 8 and 18 pounds with an average height between 8 to 17 inches. The following pictures are examples of our past Shihpoo pups, they are not for sale. What is a Shihpoo? The Shihpoo is a mixed breed dog, generally a cross between a Toy Poodle and a Shih-tzu. The Shihpoo coat is always delightfully soft and can be either straight or a bit curly though never quite as curly as a Toy Poodle. Shihpoos can be any color, including black, black and white, gold and white, gold and black, brindle. Temperament Mari May Shihpoo dogs are very intelligent, warm natured, extremely loving, affectionate and easy to train. Their parents are non-terrier types which gives the Shihpoo a gentle, self-content, non nervous personality. They love people especially children! Mari May Shihpoos make excellent lap dogs. Delightful, very amusing and extremely clever, our Shihpoos are energetic, affectionate, playful and alert. Shihpoos make great companions and family pets. A Shihpoo dog is usually a cross between a Shihtzu and a Toy Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a Shihpoo is to look up both breeds and know that you can have a mix of any of the characteristics or traits. Height and Weight This widely depends on the size of the parents, and even grandparents. Mari-May Shih-poos are the result of the careful selection of both parents after a complete evaluation of health and temperament. Our Shih-poo parents are always small usually between 6 and 8 pounds. Our pups can range anywhere between 6 and 13 pounds and we do occasionally have very tiny tea-cup and Imperial sizes, under 6 pounds. Health Concerns Unknown as no research as been preformed on this mix, however mix breeds tend to be healthier than pure breeds, as the breeding lines are wider spread and there is limited opportunity for inbreeding. At Mari-May Kennels, there are no inbreeding practices. Our extensive experience indicates that Shih-poos in our breeding lines are vigorous in health and long lived. Exercise Shih-poos enjoy a daily walk, and love play sessions off the leash. Life Expectancy About 15 years or more. A natural, whole foods diet greatly extends the life of a Shih-poo. Grooming Shih-poos should be brushed weekly and clipped every 6 to 12 weeks. Keep theiur nails trimmed. Trim hair around bottom and eyes as needed. Shih-poos do not shed and they make a good choice for allergy sufferers. Mari-May Shih-poo pups are started in our special early Puppy-Kindergarten program before they leave for their new homes. The Shih poo is one of many named Poodle crossbreeds, bred in an attempt to combine the characteristics of the Poodle, such as its high intelligence and low-shed coat, with the desirable traits of another breedin this case, the Shih Tzu. Some Shih-poos may have a longer, more Poodle-like muzzle than their Shih-Tzu parent, alleviating many breathing problems that Shih-Tzus can experience, such as Brachycephalic syndrome. How big is a Shih Poo? The size varies, and depends on whether the Poodle parent is of the teacup, miniature, or standard breed. Typically, a shih-tzu and a miniature poodle are chosen for the parents, which results in average adult weights of pounds. A shih-tzu and standard Poodle mix is extremely uncommon. Shih-poos come in a wide variety of colors, such as all black, all white, cream, sable, and any mix and combination there of. What temperament does a Shih Poo have? Shih-Poos are playful and energetic dogs. They love to chase after balls, play with squeaky toys or drag stuffed animals around the house with them. Generally, the Shih-Poo makes a great playmate for older, respectful children but wont tolerate harsh handling or hair pulling. Because the Shih-Poo is a crossbreed, some are accepting and affectionate toward strangers while others are reserved or shy around them. They love to cuddle with their owners and expect to sleep in bed with them at night. How much exercise does a Shih Poo need? Although energetic, the Shih-Poo doesnt require a lot of vigorous exercise. Short but brisk walks in the morning and evening is all that is necessary to keep this spunky little guy fit. He will happily run around the home playing with a ball or other toys. Romping and playing in a grassy backyard with children or racing around a dog park with his canine pals is also appreciated by the Shih-Poo.
