Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. We only had Dakota five days when I had to go to an event, and I made Gracie in charge of her for the evening. Gracie texted me to tell me that Dakota went to her potty door and before she could get off the couch to let her out, Dakota took the bells off the door and dropped them in her lap. Murphy is 8 months old in these pictures and weighs just over 50 lbs. He is very gentle and calm with everyone. Pat was telling me how she had some elderly visitors who were in their 80s and Murphy was great with them and just laid by their feet. He is truly amazing for an 8-month-old pup. I took these pictures when Pat brought him back here to visit me and it was amazing to see how well behaved and calm he was. He is truly an amazing dog and a great mix between the two breeds. He loves everyone and everything, including our 2 cats. He loves to kiss and cuddle. Murphy loves to go tubing at the cottage. He wears a life jacket and away he goes. He is truly a people dog! We leave Bailey and Camelot our ten year old Golden Retriever in the garage with the door shut into the house. We get home around pm and Camelot is inside the garage and Bailey is missing! He has figured out how to push down the latch, push the door open and we find him up in our bedroom lying on the king sized bed. At eight months old, Bailey figured out how to get into the house from the garage pretty routinely. We decide to leave both dogs in the house without access to the upstairs and get home to find Bailey now in the garage. He has now figured out how to pull down the latch, pull the door slightly open, stick his nose in and push open the door from the inside…. Mom and Dad…you know the food and treats are stored in the garage…just checking it out! Every morning we have to be at the hospital around to am, so we have to get up before am to work out in the garage. Bailey knows that at he gets to go outside to potty and have his breakfast, so we no longer need an alarm clock. Bailey usually sleeps on the floor near the sliding porch doors in our bedroom because it is cooler. We have a wetland which abuts our property so the yard is pretty big by Seattle standards. He has lots of energy, goofy and totally a pleasure to have around and part of our family. He carries himself in such a way that you are certain he is royalty, yet he is very silly behind closed doors. He is very athletic; he loves to swim, hike, chase squirrels and birds. Puk can run on his hind legs while chasing a squirrel that is running along the fence. My favorite thing about Puk is his ability to adjust his energy levels with ours. If we are out hiking or swimming he is giving it his all, but if we are having a lazy day he is perfectly content to lay and cuddle with you. He is very sweet natured and loves his family fiercely. His hair is a mix of curly to wavy and is the softest, silkiest fur to touch. He does not shed at all. When he is not on an adventure or taking a nap with me, he is out in the backyard playing with his brothers. This amazing soul has brought me so much love and joy, he truly is one of the greatest Loves of my life. A true testament to his wonderful parentage. He just wants to be with us. He draws so much attention when he is out and about. I travel several times a year to visit family and Puk gets to come along with me at times. Last trip he took with me he almost gave a toll booth operator a heart attack. He does weigh 80 pounds and is very tall and takes up all the space in the back seat. He just takes all the attention in stride. Sherry Rupke has been such a wonderful person to all of her SwissRidge family. Then when you start looking at her website and all the beautiful pups, you are hooked. When I am ready for another Pup, Sherry will be the first to know. Love this Breed. Magic loves…everyone! He weighs 95 lbs. He meets other dogs on a regular basis and promptly plays with them all. His groomer has a 10 lb. Yorkie and a friend of mine has a lb. Irish wolfhound. There are various dogs we know that fall within that range, and Magic playfully engages with them all with no reservation. He is just as happy meeting new people. I have lost count of the number of people who have told me they are afraid of big dogs, but somehow Magic is different. I find it heartwarming that my big, goofy, often clumsy clown is remarkably gentle with children. I call him my Velcro pup, since he tends to be by my side as much as he can. In him I have a constant companion. He accompanies me from room to room as I finish housework — it does make changing the bed linens challenging! He sits by my side leaning on me while I work and sticks close to me outdoors. And he always loves to cuddle. When I return from work, I invariably find Magic has placed some article of my clothing along with a shoe or boot of mine on the windowsill where he rests his chin, as he waits for me. He is heavy set with a big blocky head, wide chest and the famous Berner bottom! And yes he loves to lean on you if he likes you, prefers to sit in your lap if he can. He is a big boy and weighs 95 lbs. His coat is wavy with very little shedding, does not mat and is easy to comb. I can assure you if you choose a bernedoodle, you will have a joyful, happy and devoted companion who will make you laugh on a daily basis. In the winter, she loves snow too! Being a doodle, the snow sticks to them and they do not even feel it. Zo will stay outside in my yard by choice all day long playing in the snow if it is 30s F or so out. She is owned by the Faddoul family. She is so sweet and playful. She goes everywhere with me and everyone loves her. She is always by my side at home and constantly gazes at me. When I first got her, my son threw a snow ball towards her and it hit her in the face. She is not even 5 months old yet! Her disposition towards other dogs is engaging and teasing. We love her so much. I have raised many dogs but I am most impressed with her sense of loyalty. There are three legitimate and ethical breed clubs that are the main registries in the US and Canada for solids and these are their breed standards. Please do not be fooled by breeders trying to sell you dogs registered with these clubs. On the flip side however, dogs registered or shown in the clubs above do not guarantee quality dogs or an ethical breeder. Cream "e" E locus-photo Harper Alue Poodles Cream is a color that tends to fade into white as the dog ages. As puppies they can either have a cream coloring behind the ears or their whole body can be cream. As adults they can retain spots of cream behind the ears like Harper here. Some dogs do keep a cream tint into adulthood like the dog below. Creams should have dark eyes and dark inky black pigment in their points; their nose, eye rims, lips, and pads. If you have a cream born with liver points, they have incorrect pigment. Creams should have black or self colored ie clear nails. White "e" E locus We have the last in the E series, white! White is timeless, white is classic. White Poodles should have dark eyes, nice dark inky black pigment on their noses and eye rims. They should also have black or self colored nails. Whites can also get what is called "snow nose" across many breeds; in the winter, their dark pigment will fade into a liver color that will then return in the summer. This is not the same as poor pigment. You will see white Poodles with both dark, almost black looking skin when shaved in a Continental, and they can also have white skin. Dark pigment is preferred but there is nothing wrong with a dog with light skin. With whites, there are a number born with a slighty creamy tinge to their coat but grow out into a white coat. True whites, called "ice white" in the breed, are rather rare. Reds tend to fade to an apricot color or a light "washed out" red. There are of course reds who do not fade, but when purchasing a red be aware it's a possibility. There are breeders working towards breeding dark, holding reds, but that can also be a catch .Reds should have dark eyes and dark, inky black points; eye rims, lips, nose, and pads. If a red has liver pigment or spotty pigment, that is incorrect and is a major fault in the breed ring. Reds should have black or self colored ie "brown" nails. Apricot is a less intense version of red. Apricots tend to keep their color more, but they also can start out darker and fade to a shade of dark cream. Apricots should also have dark, inky black pigment on their points, however amber eyes and liver points are permitted but not desired. Apricots should have black or self colored nails as well. Apricots and reds are the "newest" color in the history of the breed, so unfortunately the history with these lines and how the popularity of them exploded, they were bred for color for a very long time before temperament, structure, and health were put first. Brown "b" b locus Firstly it needs to be said that Poodles are not chocolate, they are brown. Brown is recessive to black, which is why it is "b" instead of "B". Brown Poodles will always have lighter eyes, liver points, and self colored nails. Browns, like reds, are affected by fading. There are browns that are holding, but when purchasing a brown be aware fading will happen to a certain degree. There are breeders that are working towards breeding holding browns, and there is inherently nothing wrong with that as long as temperament, health, and breed type come first before coat color. Black "B" B locus Black Poodles. Timeless, classic, stunning!! Blacks should be born inky black and should stay inky black. However, you will hear the term "bad black" which is different from a blue dog. A bad black simply refers to a dog that does not hold it's coat pigment. A black dog who's coat has been sun damaged does not mean it is a bad black. Black dogs should have dark eyes, inky black pigment from top to bottom! Blues will look black when they are born, but there is an "old breeders tale" that blue and silver puppies will have white hairs in between their toes, but that is not a blanket truth. Blue Poodles will fade at varying speeds and degree. The two blues included are siblings but have not faded to the same degree. Most will fade into their 5th and 6th birthdays, but there are also some who hold onto a very slight blue tint for years. Blues will have dark eyes and dark pigment on their eye rims, noses, lips, and paw pads. Nails will also be black. One that is my personal favorite and one that has stumped us for quite some time! Silver is a recessive to black like blue. Silvers are born black and by their first face shave their face should start to be silvering. Silvers, like blues, do not fade on a set scale. It is thought there are modifiers in play that determine how blues and silvers clear and to what degree. You can see silvers from a darker color all the way to platinum silver. Silvers should have dark eyes and dark inky black eye rims, lips, nose, and paw pads. My favorite brownies! Silver beiges are brown based silvers, and like silvers, you will see by their first face shave a silver brown color. Silver beige Poodles are born brown and lighten with age, by two most are a beautiful silver color with a stunning brown hue, but all fade at different speeds and different shades. Silver beige Poodles will have light eyes, liver points, and self colored nails. Parti Standard Poodles - If you love spots, you may want a parti poodle. A parti poodle is a poodle of white and another color. There are several distinct patterns: the tuxedo, spotted, and abstract all refer to a poodle that is white and another color. That color can be black, brown, red, apricot, creme, silver, blue, grey, cafe-au-lait, or silver-beige. Parti poodles are usually more than half white with colored spots. They can range from almost a solid white with just a few spots of color to the more colorful tuxedos. Tuxedos look like a poodle dressed for a party. They have white on the legs and a white collar that may or may not go completely around the neck. Tuxedo-colored poodles also have white on the belly that should extend up to the chest. Some tuxedos have colored legs almost to the feet and others have white all the way up to their back. Abstract poodles have limited white markings and are almost a solid colored dog. The most common abstract poodle marking is a simple white mark on the chest. White splashes of color may also occur on the face, head, chest, and feet. Abstract poodles sometimes have a white chest and white feet that look like they have been dipped in paint. Ticking marks are the small spots found within the white parts of the dog. Dogs may have little to no ticking. Ticking on legs may look like small spots or be large enough to look like stripes.
