Just like deciding where to send your children to school, or whether to summer on Corfu or Capri, picking a new puppy is a major decision. You can't just get one from any old place. Alas, the breeding operation has been wound down, although if you are invited to shoot there, you could still try the sneaky approach. Bed dogs and gundogs. Swan had been a gift to the Queen from Dr. They were all part of what would come to be called the Royal Kennels. They are well ventilated, with good sanitary arrangements, and are whitewashed once a year. Iron gates enclose each kennel from the central yard. Good grass runs are adjacent to the kennels. These days, according to the official website of the Royal Monarchy, Sandringham Kennels house approximately twenty dogs of varying ages, including Labradors and Cocker Spaniels of various ages. The experienced gun dogs are used by members of the Royal Family during the shooting season, while the younger dogs are under training. As a point of fact, the Sandringham line of Labrador Retrievers founded in have earned respect throughout the shooting world and have been quite successful in working tests and field trials. The Queen learned well, and as an adult, her breeding plans always focused on producing dogs that could be handled at yards out. Indeed, the Queen has not only been the patron of the Labrador Retriever Club since , but in younger days was an active member of the Club, taking part regularly in its field trials. HM The Queen was picking-up behind a line of guns on the Sandringham estate, working her beloved cocker spaniels with consummate skill. In the game-shooting calendar the scene is familiar, even unremarkable. And as for the dogs, none of them knows its handler has been head of state for over six decades. British gundogs are the best in the world and Her Majesty has been their keenest supporter from childhood when she commandeered any available dog to find birds at Balmoral, alert to the vagaries of scent and wind. The Royal Family have long been dog fanciers. Our own Queen enjoys a striking affinity with dogs and horses. She understands her animals and this instinct allows her to read their behaviour. Trial champions would be good sires and dams for the development of future lines.
