Labradoodles are crosses between Labrador retrievers and poodles, designed to have the gentle and faithful personality of a Labrador retriever and the low-shedding coat of a poodle. This makes them the ideal hypoallergenic pup—well, as much as any dog can be considered hypoallergenic. But, as is always the case with crossbreed dogs, the reality is much more complicated. While you do get low-shedding Labradoodles, there is no guarantee that they will all have a low-shedding coat. Here is everything you need to know about Labradoodle coats, what to expect, exactly how much they are really likely to shed, and how to take care of them. What Is A Labradoodle? A Labradoodle is a crossbreed dog that is created when you mix a Labrador retriever with a poodle. The mix can be with any size poodle—standard, miniature, or toy—and this will largely dictate the overall size of the Labradoodle. They are often linked with goldendoodles, which are a similar crossbreed created by mixing a golden retriever with a poodle. Labradoodles have been around since at least the s in the United States and began to appear in films shortly thereafter. Both of these breeds are already considered excellent as service dogs. They are highly intelligent and also eager to please, which means they are highly trainable rather than being headstrong. They have a gentle personality, so they bond with people quickly and get along well with other people and strangers. This means that in addition to being well-suited to complete the tasks required of service dogs, they also have the right temperament to be in public places and around strangers. The big problem with these types of retrievers? They shed—a lot—as anyone with either of these breeds at home will tell you. In general, this has proven true, with most having the right temperament to be service dogs. However, not all Labradoodles inherit the low-shedding coat of the poodle. The answer to the question of whether Labradoodles shed is that it depends on the dog. So, you could get a Labradoodle with the low-shedding coat of a poodle, or you could end up with a Labradoodle with the profusely shedding coat of a golden retriever. Since a low-shedding dog is one of the most desirable traits of a Labradoodle, it is something that breeders control for. When they are mixing a Labrador retriever and a poodle, they will look out for pairings that have already produced the desired coat and try to control for that, though of course not every litter will be the same. Here again, dogs with the low-shedding coat are prioritized for breeding. While there is no guarantee, this significantly increases the likelihood of getting a Labradoodle with a low-shedding coat. Also, if you are specifically looking for a low-shedding Labradoodle due to allergies, or for other reasons why you might need to avoid excessive shedding, breeders will do their best to identify a low-shedding puppy for you. What Are Labradoodle Coats Like? There are generally three types of coat that you get with a Labradoodle: wool, fleece, or hair. Wool Labradoodles with a wool coat are often called curly Labradoodles, and they are the ones that most look like they have the coat of their poodle parent. The curls vary in tightness, but they are generally tight enough that they are low shedding, with any hair they let go of getting caught up in their coat. These dogs need lots of grooming, and need to be brushed preferably on a daily basis to remove excessive hair. Nevertheless, these are the best types of Labradoodles for anyone with an allergy. Fleece Labradoodles with a fleece coat are often referred to as shaggy, which is probably the most common type of Labradoodle coat. The curls within the fleece are wavy, but vary from a modest wave to a fairly tight curl. The coat is low shedding, but these dogs do still shed—though much less profusely than you would expect from a Labrador. Hair This is the least common coat type among Labradoodles and looks a lot like the straight-haired coats of purebred Labrador retrievers but a bit scruffier. They also tend to shed just as much as purebred Labs. This type of coat is not always readily noticeable on a puppy Labradoodle, and will only start to become apparent when they get to about 12 weeks of age. Pups with these coats only tend to result from first-generation mixes of Labradors and poodles. Are Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? Even if you get yourself a Labradoodle with a nice wool coat, it might be a stretch to call them hypoallergenic. All dogs shed their hair just like all humans and will release some of the allergy-causing dander as they shed. But some dogs, such as poodles, have coats that shed much less and leave less dander lying around. The hair is caught up in their coat and has to be brushed out. So, while dogs with these coats are definitely better for people with allergies, they are not technically hypoallergenic. Brushing How often you need to brush your Labradoodle depends on what type of hair they have and also whether they stay outside or they are an inside dog. When you do brush them, brush to the skin, working from under the coat. Work from the feet up to the body and the tail to the head. Brush in the directions of the hair, starting with small amounts and adding small amounts of the coat as you stroke. The hair actually acts as insulation for these dogs, and if you remove it, you can end up letting them overheat rather than cooling them down. Around the head, you will probably want to cut the hair down to around five to 10 centimeters, leaving it with a full coat on top of the head and shoulders. Keep a round shape around the ears, blending in. The hair around the mouth and nose should be cut into a neat circular shape, and the eyebrows trimmed at a sloping degree angle from the forehead down to the cheeks. Make sure to leave enough brow to create a visor long enough to reach down the bridge between the eyes. On the legs, cut down to between 10 and 15 centimeters, making a kind of tube covering the roof straight down rather than following the curve of the ankle. But do make sure that the hair comfortably clears the ground. Trim the tail hair to match the legs. If you do want to shave, then focus on the under ear area, going from ear to ear cutting a chin strap. You can also shave them from groin to sternum, their inner rear legs, armpits, and potty patch. Any cuts and pulls can traumatize your dog and cause them to become very difficult at grooming time. Daarna zullen zij pas kennis maken met allerlei huiselijke geluiden en wennen aan externe geluiden dmv CD waarop allerlei "bijzondere"geluiden te horen zijn bijv: onweer, vuurwerk, treinen, gillende kinderen, knallende uitlaten en tractoren enz.We wennen ze aan het dragen van een halsbandje en ze zijn gewend aan de auto en mogen ze met de bakfiets mee om de geluiden ook live te ervaren. Wanneer de pups het nest verlaten zijn zij ingeent, gechipt, 4 x ontwormd, in het bezit van een Europees paspoort en zullen zij een stamboom ontvangen van de ALAEU. Onze pups worden allemaal "onder contract" verkocht. Nadat we dit bewijs van castratie nota van de dierenarts incl chipnummer hebben ontvangen sturen we u de stamboom van uw hond toe. De pups worden op deze manier natuurlijk op de best mogelijke manier gesocialiseerd en worden vanaf het begin in huiselijke sfeer opgevoed, inclusief kinderen en andere honden. Wij hebben het geluk dat wij genoeg ruimte in de huiskamer hebben om de pups en moeder tijdens de bevalling en de periode daaropvolgend in een afgeschermde ruimte te laten verblijven om zodoende in alle rust haar pups ter wereld te kunnen brengen en nadien te kunnen genieten van haar pups. Wanneer de pups groot genoeg zijn om op ontdekking uit te gaan zal mama er in de nacht niet meer zelf verblijven. Wanneer het weer het toelaat kunnen ze lekker ravotten in de tuin. Wachtlijst: Net als vrijwel iedere andere Australian Labradoodle fokker hebben wij een wachtlijst. Wij hielden gemiddeld een wachttijd op de lijst aan van maximaal 12 maanden, maar tegenwoordig is dat gelukkig een stuk minder. Natuurlijk is het een schatting aangezien wij volledig van moeder natuur afhankelijk zijn en dus ook van het aantal pups dat onze dames krijgen. Wij gaan standaard uit van zes pups per miniatuur nest en zeven voor de mediums. Meestal zijn het er meer, maar wij maken liever iemand extra blij dan dat wij een aankomende pupkoper moeten mededelen dat ze toch niet in aanmerking komen voor een pup. Op onze site geven wij een indicatie aan wanneer wij weer pups verwachten met daarin de te verwachtte periode van dekking en of er nog ruimte is voor dat nest op de wachtlijst of op de reservelijst. Onze ervaring leert dat er altijd mensen afhaken die in aanmerking komen voor een pup doordat ze reeds een pup hebben of geen interesse meer hebben door externe factoren. De plek op de wachtlijst is voor ons meestal bepalend en niet of de aankomende pupkoper zich heeft ingeschreven op het dat moment voor ons ingeschatte nest. We live in a small Broadland village in South Norfolk, where our dogs are able to take full advantage of long country walks as well as the Norfolk Broads. Our first labradoodle came to live with us nearly 16 years ago and completely stole our hearts. Australian labradoodles are labrador retriever crossed with a poodle with the addition of other permitted breeds through the generations, including the soft coated Irish wheaten terrier, Portuguese water dog and the cocker spaniel. These infusions have resulted in dogs who are consistent in size, coat type and temperament. None of our pups are spayed or neutered before leaving for their new homes. This practice is only carried out by commercial breeders. I am not against spaying and neutering, at an appropriate age, but carrying this out before the dogs have reached maturity is not in their best interest. I also feel it is essential for family pets to be born and raised in a family home, as opposed to commercial kennels. We would never use distance selling or couriers as we view homing our puppies as a two way process that has to be right for both families. We therefore always meet potential puppy families and have them visit our home to meet our dogs. Once we offer you a puppy we ask for a 10 per cent deposit with the balance payable prior to collecting your puppy. Our puppies are only sold as family pets, as are the pups from matings with Waffle. Therefore no puppy shall be used for breeding, without our prior written consent. However, several years ago while I was attending seminary, the image of the lamb wrapped around the neck of Jesus was explained to me. Because sheep tend to stray and will also follow wherever they are led, shepherds often had to discipline lambs that would stray from their shepherd. The shepherd would use his rod to break the leg of a wandering lamb. After binding the break, the shepherd would carry the lamb on his shoulders while the wound healed. If the lamb struggled and fought, it would quickly realize that the broken leg wouldn't allow it to flee. The lamb learned during the healing process that the shepherd could be trusted. The lamb needed the shepherd to provide food, transportation and protection. Once the wound was completely healed, the lamb was fiercely loyal to the shepherd and wouldn't stray from the shepherd's leading. A few years ago a news story broke about Shrek the sheep. Shrek was a Merino sheep who lived in New Zealand. Shrek became famous because he managed to avoid being captured and shorn for six years. His wool continued to grow and thicken, and his eyes were eventually hidden behind the thick coat. Shrek dodged the sheering by hiding in caves and running from his master. The Bible also shares with us that God anointed his people with oil just as the shepherds anointed the heads of their sheep with oil. This wasn't just a symbolic ritual. Sheep are easy targets for flies, lice and ticks. A sheep that was not covered in oil on his head could easily become the victim of infestations of these pests. However, it wasn't just a nuisance. Bugs would crawl through the ear canal of the unoiled sheep and nest in its brain, eating away at it. The pain from the bugs would be so severe on the sheep that the sheep would bang his skull on rocks and against trees to ease his suffering. The sheep could break his own skull seeking relief from the brain-eating parasites. When God offers to anoint us with his oil, it means he offers us protection from the parasites of this world that seek to eat away at us. If we hide in caves, or jump off the proverbial cliffs of this world, dodging his anointing and protection, we may become victims of this world. We may become so filled with pain that we hit our heads against rocks to ease our suffering. God seeks to shepherd us through this life. Oftentimes that is through discipline, sheering or anointing. But it is always with love, and it is always with our best interest at heart. He is our shepherd. He can be trusted when we surrender to his leading.
