It is much easier to avoid this state of frenzied behavior than it is to reverse it. Do keep in mind that very young puppies up to about 4 months old cannot really be reined in; they are all over the map and will have short energy bursts followed by deep sleep; it's a temporary stage that will gradually even out. Here are some ways to encourage a calm demeanor: 1 Have the proper confinement method. The confinement method that you use to keep him in one spot will have a big impact on his behavior. If the area is too small, a Boxer can develop overwhelming feelings of being pent up and this can make him very hyper and agitated. It's very stressful for a dog of any age to be confined to a small space. This breed also can have some claustrophobic issues more than others, so this only adds to the issue. When made to stay in a tiny area with not enough room to move around, there are often issues of developing restlessness and anxiety. They are super hyper, highly inquisitive and importantly are never happy just 'being' for long periods of time. Dogs are the same. Boxers can become hyper if they have nothing to focus on. Just left to 'be', they can get bored and have trouble knowing what to do, so they run around… they quite literally can end up bouncing off the walls in an overly hyper state with no real tools to calm themselves down. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. While a hyper puppy definitely still needs to be walked, engaged and given tasks to stay busy…and a puppy cannot be expected to remain calm all day… when you take the assertive position to give a 'Sit' command that is listened to without hesitation, this can really come in handy if your Boxer is acting hyper around company or when out in public in a store or other area where you really need him to act calm. It's never too early or too late to start working on this. Training for the basics of Sit, Come, Stay, Down, Get or Fetch and Give can start when a Boxer puppy is 8 weeks old and can be taught to older dogs as well. In addition to this, teaching a Boxer to Heel is always advantageous and not only will keep him calm when out on a walk around the neighborhood but will also keep him appropriately by your side in high energy situations where a dog can become hyper just by picking up the vibe of an event. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Dogs that rarely see a visitor to the house will often jump and act overly excited on those few occasions that someone new enters into their territory. Boxers should be gradually exposed to the many situations, places, people and other pets that exist in the world. If you stayed inside your home… only venturing into your yard and nowhere else for years and were suddenly plopped down in to Times Square, you wouldn't be so calm either; that's how dogs feel if they are isolated and not given the opportunity to slowly learn about the world and all that is in it. Go to parks, bring your Boxer along to run errands, bring him hiking, change up the walking routes, take the time to say hello when you pass by another owner with his dog, have him outside with you while you wash the car, bring him to the beach… unless there are big signs saying 'no dogs allowed' bring him along and let him experience the sights and sounds of the world. Hyperkinesis - Being clinically hyperactive is often misdiagnosed. Most dogs simply need the physical and mental releases as we discussed above. These highly sensitive dogs can be set off into a frenzy by everyday simple noises such as microwave beeping or normal household events such as someone zipping down the staircase. For these rare cases, thorough testing must be performed, which should include a 2 to 3 day stay at an veterinary hospital where vitals are monitored, both heart and respiratory rates, when both at rest and when stimuli is introduced. If this is diagnosed, stimulants similar to those that are given to humans with ADHD can be helpful as are vet supervised changes to the diet and possible supplements of L-theanine, GABA and valerian root. Senior Issues - In some cases, a senior dog will be unable to stay calm and this is often related to either cognitive decline, health issues that are causing discomfort or a combination of the two. Physical discomfort often associated with arthritis can cause a dog to have trouble resting or sleeping. Food Allergies - While we have not seen any studies showing specifics, veterinary medicine claims that canines may have food allergies that can lead to abnormal behavior including acting hyper and having an inability to calm down. With all the high levels of chemicals found in many manufactured foods, it's easy to believe this could be the case. When a dog is constantly ingesting artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemical preservatives, this is not good for physical health and it's not a huge leap from there to a dog's mental health as well. If this is suspected, a change to home cooked food or a switch to a quality commercial brand without these elements should be considered. Summary Boxers are animated, able to express emotion and are great companions. This is not a lazy breed or one that is content to sit alone just 'being'. Expect your Boxer puppy to be hyper and for a Boxer of any age, follow the guidelines for providing proper care which will help your dog channel his energy in a health way. This has 2 phases to it. The first part, called "tonic" can be very extreme or mild. This is very dangerous, as a puppy or dog may stop breathing. If breathing does not start again within 30 seconds, canine CPR must be performed while assistance is being called. In milder phases, the dog may drop down, but will not be unconscious and will breathe as usual. The "clonic" and 2nd part will be one in which the dog show very unusual behavior. This can include all or some of the following: Walking in place Abnormal movements of the mouth Impassiveness Enlarged pupils Petit Mal This is a short event canine seizure lasting, in general, 15 to 20 seconds. During this time the dog will lose muscle control and they will enter a "blank" stage of staring. Partial seizures may take place with dogs. They may show signs comparable to the 2nd phase of the tonic-clonic type. This will consist of the walking in place and the dog may also have muscle spasms: in the legs, head or back. Status Epilepticus The most severe and also most uncommon type is Status Epilepticus. This is typically fatal. A number of dogs will never recuperate. This type can be avoided as it most often happens when a dog is given great amounts of chocolate. This can also happen if a dog unintentionally eats a poison such as a cleaning compound. For this reason, puppy-proofing a home for a Boxer is highly recommended. How to React What do should you do if you think your Boxer is having a seizure? It is a common misconception that one should hold the tongue. However, there are some things that an owner or witness should do. If there are any objects near the dog, move them away, such as chairs, coffee tables, etc. Immediately shut off any noises such as the TV, radio, etc. Turn off any bright lights. Speak in a reassuring voice. Jot down information that the vet will need to know: When this happened How long it lasted for All signs that your dog showed What your Boxer was doing right before the seizure Once it appears that your dog is out of the seizure, bring him or her to the vet or nearest animal hospital. Testing will begin to determine the cause. Treatment The 1 cause of seizures in Boxer dogs is epilepsy, and therefore we will discuss treatment for this disease. Medications- Anti-epileptic medications do not always prevent all seizures from occurring, but can greatly reduce both the number of attacks and the severity of them. The most widely used and effective treatment is a combination of phenobarbital and potassium bromide. Phenobarbital frequently causes marked drowsiness with many Boxer dogs, however the body normally adjusts within a couple of weeks as it builds up a tolerance to this side effect. There are some other side effects, however benefits generally outweigh risks. Any dog on a regimen of this medicine must be tested on a regular basis for any possible damage to the liver. Rarely, it can cause the hind legs to become stiff, but if this does occur, it goes away once the dosing stops. In cases where this combination does not effectively help a Boxer dog in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures, other medications may be tried. This includes: Clonazepam, Clorazepate and Valproic acid. For this reason, owners are strongly encouraged to stick to a strict dosing schedule. Alternative Treatments Acupuncture - In cases of idiopathic seizures the cause cannot be determined , acupuncture is a holistic treatment that may help. Sessions usually last 20 to 30 minutes once per week and 4 to 6 weeks are usually given to see if it is effective. If so, sessions may be stretched out to only once every 6 weeks. Some canine acupuncturists also recommend herbs in addition to this, and it is highly recommended to check with your Boxer's veterinarian first. Dietary Changes - With some dogs, a change to the diet can be very helpful in cases of idiopathic seizures cause unknown as the cause may be an allergic reaction to a particular food element. The 2 options are to switch to a hypo-allergenic commercial brand or to home cook which is the recommended choice since an owner can have full control over all ingredients and foods that the Boxer ingests. With home cooking, one would begin with a very plain, simple diet of white, de-boned chicken breast and plain, unseasoned rice. Every 2 weeks, a new ingredient is introduced. Some of the elements that are slowly incorporated into the meals are: carrots, green beans and potato. Supplements - Omega 3 and Omega 6 are types of fatty acids that have many benefits. These supplements are frequently used to keep a Boxer dog's skin and coat healthy. It is thought that these fatty acids decrease neuron activity in the brain for both dogs and humans and therefore works to decrease the severity and frequency of seizures that are classified as "cause unknown". Continuing Research Research is under way to identify the defective gene or genes responsible for epilepsy so that canines can be identified as carriers before being bred. This is an important step since affected dogs may not have their first seizure until 3 years old, by which time they may have already been used in a breeding program. A dog that suffers from epilepsy should be retired from any breeding program. Other Boxer Dog Conditions Arthritis - This is not uncommon with the Boxer breed and typically affects dogs that have had past issues such as hip dysplasia or luxating patella. There are some good treatment options including supplements and prescribed medication. Cancer - This is the 1 leading cause of death with the Boxer breed. Recent studies on this are quite surprising. The question of canine intelligence and breed specific intelligence is not without controversy. And this is really saying something. At this level, there is enjoyment of using senses and motor skills, with a high curiosity in regard to objects and events. Problems are solved via trial and error more ahead on how to develop this more with your Boxer. Intelligence shows via logical reasoning. There is initiative to produce sounds during play dogs will squeeze or shake toys to produce squeaks or voices with voice-activated toys , and most importantly, an understanding of words. Word comprehension is a crucial factor in determining intellect. Other factors taken into account to rank intelligence include: Memory skills — Canines have both short and long term memory. Beginning at the age of 5 to 6 months old, dogs are quite aware of their world, however an interesting facet of this is that Dr. This is simply a test to see if a dog can recognize his own reflection and is said, by many, to be the most sophisticated aspect of consciousness, with only humans, chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas and dolphins able to pass this test. Humans develop this ability anywhere between the early age of 18 months and sometimes as late as 3 years old. Coren claimed that no dogs — no matter the breed or its personal intelligence level — is able to do this. He firmly believed that dogs will either ignore the image or believe it is another animal. This is, however, debated. Biologist Marc Bekoff of the University of Colorado believes that since the refection does not have its own scent, that a dog then interprets the reflection as not being real. He suggests that if dogs were tested to recognize their own scent instead of their own image, that they would pass with flying colors. Perception — How one perceives his world is telling in regard to intelligence and canines surpass humans in some of these aspects, including the combination of smell and hearing. They are lacking in vision, however. While it is unclear why this is done, it was proven using 70 dogs comprised of 37 breeds over the course of 2 years. The other element is the ability to pick up on social cues. This is one reason why owners should be very aware of the non-verbal cues that they are sending out, that a Boxer dog can pick up on. Problem Solving — This involves the intelligence to work out a problem. You may witness this if your Boxer works hard to figure out how to open a cabinet door that his food is hidden behind. And you can help a Boxer improve his thinking skills with puzzle games more ahead. So, while the Boxer breed may not be listed as the most intelligent dog in the world and this too is debated- more ahead , he or she is most assuredly, very smart. Number of Neurons There are countless ways to interpret how smart one mammal is over another. And most experts do not agree in the ranking of animal intelligence.

Louis Mo. Our breeding dogs are AKC registered. Pet puppies will not get AKC papers. They will get copies of parents AKC pedigrees. You can get AKC pal papers once your puppy is spayed or neutered. We don't want to just meet the standard for a license, we want to excel expectations. This is required if you have five females. Please, make sure if you get a puppy in Illinois to ask for a copy of the Kennel License. Our adults are provided with an inside area with toys, beds and excellent vet care. A radio plays for them as well. Most prefer to lay up on their Kuranda beds most of the time with their toys or play with a friend. They get their areas cleaned at a minimum of four times a day and disinfectant is used twice a day. Adults get treats, vitamins, enzymes and are fed daily with a probiotic added for health. We have natural and artificial lighting as well. The dogs even have their own washer and dryer to clean blankets, toys and towels daily. Dogs are walked, given access to the pond when weather allows for swimming, let out to run in the open fields, play fetching and work on obedience training. Favorite thing of most is to find a human and crawl into their laps. Yes, our labs even come into our home and crawl into our chairs and onto the couch. Adults are treated monthly for worms, and provided vaccines as recommended by the vet. Once you see a dog with EIC or CNM you will understand why we test our labs to make sure our puppies will never be affected by these diseases that can be prevented by selective breeding. This area is cleaned and disinfected throughout 24 hours a day. If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We provide a large play area with toys to entertain them. They get Kuranda beds to sleep on or play king of the bed on. Puppies are given vaccines, vet care, wormings, vitamins, probiotics daily and fed a good quality feed. We start the weaning process at 3. This is puppy food, goats milk, and probiotic mix that we make for them four times a day. We want to provide you with a happy, healthy puppy and believe that the first eight weeks of life here gets them on the right track. Our puppies are so comfortable they very rarely cry and this is due to the care we provide them. A healthy, comfortable puppy is a happy puppy and that makes them great puppies when they get to go home. We also play with them daily, snuggle with them, and end the day with them fast asleep; before we go to bed all the puppies are sleeping safe inside. Puppies get vet care as needed and a full exam before going home. We also microchip all puppies and pay for the fees so that if they are ever lost someone can find the owners or us. Facility The building that we use for the adults is a new building put into use January .It is a beautiful building that we take great pride in owning, please check out our kennel page for pictures. It is climate controlled and the dogs appreciate it. A lot of time, work and details went into the building to make it safe and comfortable for them to use. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. There is a lot that we do that is not listed on here and I will update more over time. We just wanted to hit some points on this page so that you understand what we do here. Our prices on pups might be a little higher than some breeders, or less than some breeders, yes some breeders do charge more than us and still don't provide half this in their breeding program. Why would we do this some might ask. Plus, people pick us to care for their puppies that first eight weeks and we do the best we can. We have dogs with excellent genetics with show lines and hunt test lines. We have brought in dogs over time to expand our lines and have some of the best that you can find. Most of all we breed our labs for looks, health, train ability and temperament. My Mom owns a farm thirty minutes away from me where she lives and raises her own pugs with help from me. On February 11th, , my first pug, "Cheese", the one who started it all passed away suddenly. The whole family was devastated after learning of her passing and spending so many years with such a great dog. I was heart broken, I lost my best friend. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again.
