As we talked, I said I was used to having three dogs, was down to two dogs and if you need some help in the future call me. Within two weeks, I got a call asking for help. The rest is history. Over the years, that has included everything from maintaining the SGRR Facebook pages and helping with the yearly calendar, to updating the blog on the SGRR website and answering inquiry emails from interested adopters. Sunshine is an amazing community of people that work selflessly on behalf of the dogs in our care. I consider myself blessed to be a part of this wonderful group of people, of whom many have become close friends. Looking for a way to give back and pay it forward, Michelle began by giving many a pup a ride in her Golden taxi, while sometimes serving as an emergency foster and babysitter to those who have begun their journey home. Centrally located in Connecticut, when an opportunity arises to meet a dog, Michelle is one of the first to raise her hand. So passionate about the dogs, Michelle has become the Northern Intake Coordinator, Freedom Ride Coordinator, and finds adopters for any young dogs rescued in the North. Additionally, she helps to coordinate vet care and training, and conducts telephone interviews and home visits for adopters. She says that she gets paid in fur and has quite the collection to show for it! She ensures that the dog has a place to stay, takes care of the vetting and training arrangements, and makes sure the dog has lots of belly rubs and toys and treats. And when the dogs continue their journey to their forever home, she always sheds a tear. Lisa Hume Rescuing since , Lisa Hume is our unsung southern hero who is directly responsible for saving the majority of the Southern Sunshine dogs we have taken in. Additionally, Lisa rescues many other non-golden dogs by referring them to other rescues, networking with rescue advocates throughout the South. Lisa is responsible for getting each dog vetted and ready before traveling north. Convincing vets to give rescue discounts, begging for space in clinics and boarding kennels, taking dogs some to medical specialists hours away from home, moving them from foster to clinic to clinic - so we can save just one more that day. Lisa also spends her days getting to know as many of the dogs as she can so we can place them in foster or adoptive homes in the north. She also arranges for the dogs' videos and pictures, and takes care of the Sunshine van - and all the day to day things that we are not even aware are happening. Boating and fishing are among their hobbies. They are also devoted footballs fans of Alabama's Crimson Tide. She handles finance and administration for SGRR including donor relations, both individual and corporate. Running the show at Susan's home is Willie the cat. After Maggie crossed the bridge, another golden beauty came into their lives named Roxy fka Agnes. They both felt that Sunshine was exceptional and that they wanted to give back in some way. So when the call came from Donna asking Belinda to help with phone interviews and vet checks, she was ready. Lily brightened their homes and hearts after losing their beloved Roxy last January. Lily is the resident entertainer and brings a smile to everyone she meets. Ava Pillinger Ava has been working with rescue for nearly eight years. Presently, Ava initially reviews all adoption applications and assigns volunteers to start the process of evaluation. She also compiles a list of cities where a prospective adopter requires a home visit and coordinates that visit with a local SGRR volunteer. Before retiring to raise her children, Ava was a travel agent which explains her love travel adventure. Having recently lost her beloved golden, J J, Ava directs her energy to helping to find suitable parents for our dogs in need. These two dogs changed his life forever. He also rescued Maya in and then Arlen came along. He now has Digger and Dudley to join the pack. Jeff had rescued 4 dogs before and his amazing experience dealing with Donna T, Lisa, and Martha changed his outlook on the adoption and rescue process. Jeff had rescued Goldens from other groups but found SGRR to be the most exceptional and well run rescue group of all. Jeff helps maintain the adoption database and also happily does home visits and evaluates dogs who are relinquished in the northeast. Sadie arrived from AL just 2 days prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf area and the need to immediately rescue dogs soared. Like many of our volunteers, she started out doing vet checks, phone interviews, and home visits. She then initiated the adoption follow-up program. As SGRR grew, she was asked to oversee the volunteer group and the processing of applications. She works hand in hand with Lisa Hume in obtaining particulars about the dogs in the south to create bios for them, and then ultimately matches the dogs waiting for loving homes with the approved applicants in the northeast. When she is not rescuing, Donna works as a medical insurance billing specialist. She can often be found running or hiking near her home in Mercer County, NJ that she shares with her husband, Ken, and their dogs, Princess and Mika. Candy Van Sciver Candy's involvement with Sunshine began in when she and her husband adopted year old Sampson from Alabama. Sampson was their first rescue experience. They were hooked as they watched him transition from a broken-down old yard dog to a happy and healthy Golden who enjoyed every day of his final two years. She started out helping with phone interviews, vet checks, and home visits. For a time, she also filled in for Candy, handling the senior adoptions. Jeanne works as a consultant and tutor in the field of K education, but spends as much time as possible outdoors with the dogs. She has been a Mortgage Loan Originator for about 33 years. Her love of animals, especially dogs, goes back to her childhood. At one time I had 3 Goldens and 1 Lab. Needless to say, we had a house full. Two years ago, I lost both my precious Golden and Lab of 12 years to cancer, both in the same month. I decided then that I could not go through the sadness or loss again of losing something that was so dear to me and something that I loved so much. But, after a year and a half, I began thinking about volunteering for a rescue. I knew Lisa Hume and knew her intense involvement with Golden Retrievers. I pursued finding her and found out that she was in need of fosters of which then worked in to preparing the transport packages for dogs in this area. I have been retired since July .In addition to interviewing potential adopters, Kathy has the enjoyable task of following up with adopters to learn how their dogs are settling in with their new family. She babysits a couple of days a week for her grandnieces and grandnephews. After being very impressed with the adoption process she wanted to become more involved. Remove your street shoes before entering the puppy room. Shoes are a common source of germs or parasites that can infect the puppies. If you have been around other animals or sick people, change your clothing before entering the puppy room. Remove the sac from each puppy as it is born, allowing the mother to sniff, clean and chew the umbilical cord. The puppy can't breathe until the sac is removed. Pull it away quickly and then suction out the nose and mouth with the syringe. Swab the stump of the umbilical cord with the iodine. Allow Mom to investigate and clean her pup, and then weigh the puppy and record its birth time, weight, sex and colour of its collar. Put a coloured puppy collar on the pup loosely. Ensure the collar is not too tight or loose enough for another pup to become entangled in it. Keep in mind that the puppies grow at a very fast rate so be sure to check the collars daily. Allow each puppy to nurse after weighing it. If the mother is already delivering again, put the puppy in the plastic box under the heat lamp. It's OK to keep the puppies in the plastic box through most of the birthing; however, each puppy should be allowed to nurse within the first few minutes of birth, to receive colostrum. It is very important that the puppy receive the colostrum. The heat lamp should not be too close to the puppy. Once all of the puppies are born, place the puppies with the mother to nurse. Move the heat lamp towards the whelping box, but aim it so that the puppies can crawl back and forth as they get too warm or too cold. A puppy cannot regulate its own body temperature for the first few weeks. Make a bed for the family, if the mother gave birth in some place other than a whelping box. For a Golden Retriever mother and puppies, a box that is 4 feet by 4 feet with sides about 12 inches high is good. A plastic moulded kiddie pool will work fine too. Weigh each puppy twice daily for the first week and record the weights and times. Swab iodine on the umbilical stump twice a day until it dries up. Infections can lead quickly to septicaemia in such small bodies. If a puppy loses weight after the first 24 hours it should be watched carefully for problems and supplemented with a bottle feeding. If it continues to lose weight, take it to the veterinarian, along with the recorded weights since birth. Weigh daily after the first week, until about 4 weeks of age. Assist the puppies as needed when they nurse. Some will have more trouble than others, so help the weaker nursers and be sure all puppies get enough milk. Smaller or weaker puppies may need some private time with mom or a bottle of puppy formula, one or more times a day. Notice any signs of trouble, such as lethargy, coldness, failing to nurse. If any puppy seems at all "off" to you call the veterinarian. Small things turn fatal very fast with newborn puppies. Handle each puppy daily, holding it securely but changing it to different positions, such as turning it on its back, and then back to its tummy. This is mildly stressful and helps the pups develop well while also preparing them for being pets when they are older. Do not allow small children or strangers to handle the puppies. Change the newspapers and other bedding in the box every day or as needed. As the pups get bigger the papers and towels will need to be changed a few times each day. Introduce the puppies to semi-solid foods at around four weeks of age. This should be a gruel made of dry puppy food soaked in puppy formula until it is mushy. It's normal for them to make a huge mess with their food; they are learning. Clean them up with a warm, damp wash cloth. Deworm and vaccinate the puppies according to your veterinarian's instructions. Do not give them over the counter worm medicine, as these may not all be safe. Deworming starts around three weeks of age and vaccinations at about 6 weeks, but consult with your veterinarian as there are times when changes to the schedule are needed. TIP Mom's health is crucial to the welfare of the puppies, so make sure you feed her a good quality dog food. She needs much more food while nursing puppies. If several hours go by and there are no more puppies, take the mom to the veterinarian for an exam and X-ray to be sure there are no more puppies. If the puppy does not start breathing after clearing the mucous and sac away and using suction, you can try to revive it with brisk but gentle towel massage. Also, wrap the pup in a towel, face down, and with the towel and both of your hands fully supporting the head, neck, and body, briskly swing your raised arms downward to help dislodge any mucous. The puppy must be fully supported or this will break its neck. One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! All the puppies were pretty much white in color except for one who was a shade darker. As I said the early days are usually uneventful. A little more activity, but still acting pretty much like drunken old men. Some of my favorite times are weeks 3 — 5 because the puppies are still very docile and easy to manage. This is around the time we start noticing the poop piling up. For the first 4 weeks, Raven cleans up most of the poopie messes. This is around the time we cut her off from her poop supply. Week 4 is also around the time we start working on crate training our puppies. This gives them a head start before they go to their forever homes. Enter the Poop Wars Phase! Yeah, not the most exciting part of raising a litter of pups. I was only planning on keeping one puppy from this litter to raise as a service dog and during week 6 I temperament tested the litter. Puppy temperament testing is usually recommended at 49 days 7 weeks we did ours a little early on day 43 and day .Following our rules for naming puppies we re-named our little guy, Charlie. Can I tell you that caring for a litter of 8 puppies is about x more difficult than taking care of two pups? Riley and Charlie were best of friends and with only two pups I was able to give them more play time in the backyard and work on their training. The pedigree of both parents should be considered as part of your quest for a puppy, the pedigree will list all of the ancestors historically for 3 or 4 generations back up the family tree. All of the canines listed in the pedigree impact the genetics and thereby the health of the offspring. The pedigree itself does nothing to convey the health of a puppy, but it tells the dogs lineage, their titles and country of origin. By searching, you can find a breeder offering puppies from parents with exceptional pedigrees, that have correct body structure, a superior visual appearance, plus the temperament to match your expectations. What is an exceptional pedigree? The more champions in a pedigree, the better. Here is a quick run down of German Shepherd championship titles. The German Sieger beats hundreds of other Champions to be selected this coveted title. The only higher title accomplishment attainable is the World Sieger. It is the same as the Sieger - but is for the female winner of the German National Championship Conformation show. Not many people are familiar with the word Sieger but even less are familiar with the word Siegerin outside of German Shepherd professionals. The Sieger show is held annually in Germany. VA-2 is the Vice- Sieger, etc. The best genetics possible are found in Sieger show winning adult German Shepherds. The puppies born from these bloodlines will be the absolute best in quality and appearance when compared to the average German Shepherd you see on the street. An analogy would be like comparing a shiny Ferrari against a rusted out Ford Pinto. The top bloodlines are found in the VA titled dogs and filtered down into their offspring, but be prepared to pay a significantly premium price for that level of parenthood and prestige. You will hear of dogs described as being from show lines, herding lines or working lines. Show lines refers to canines that are used to compete in conformation shows, herding lines means canines used to herd sheep, working lines denotes canines used to work in protection, Schutzhund or other disciplines. Primarily there are 3 main types of German Shepherd Dogs. Czech Shepherds are longer and leaner in body frame, more narrow across the chest and have taller rear hindquarters. Typical coat colors are black and tan, black and creme, black and silver, brown sable, silver sable and brindled. The coat patterns of a Czech Shepherd run from blanket-back to saddleback and brindled but most are blanket backed. We do not produce Czech Shepherd pups. Yes, Dutch Shepherds still fall under the umbrella of German Shepherds. Dutch Shepherds originated in the Netherlands and are very similar to Czech Shepherds in body form however they are typically more solid, weighty and sturdy than Czech Shepherds. Dutch Shepherds are not very commonly found outside of police or military use. They also present as a harder dog meaning they require an experienced trainer, handler or owner. Obviously there are exceptions to these generalized statements. Dutch Shepherds are brindled in coat color, brindled simply means a mottled and multi-colored un-patterned coat appearance. We do not produce Dutch Shepherd pups. West German Shepherds come from the democratic capitalist state of West Germany. West German Shepherds have shorter more compact torsos, thicker across the chest and have the squatted or lowered hindquarters. It is not that the dogs are stacked or posed for pictures, their rear bone structure is genetically encoded to be positioned more angular than that of a Czech Shepherd. The coat colors of a West German Shepherd are black and red set in a saddleback pattern. While interesting, we do not own or breed for these types, nor am I going to invest any time delving into them further. Over the past 25 years I have owned and bred different types of German Shepherd dogs. I keep track of the litters being sold in our geographic region. The West German type German Shepherd dog is the most sought after type. This is the number one variety of German Shepherd dog that previous GSD owners, consumers, enthusiast and new first time owners are actively seeking. You might assume that the cheap dogs are not as healthy or desirable, and the more expensive ones are a better, safer choice. Breeders know this. Many breeders will put a higher price on their low quality dog to look professional and make their dogs appear more valuable. Some breeders import very expensive dogs so they can breed them to sell puppies at a higher price bracket. An experienced breeder can evaluate a dog by comparing the conformation or show quality, health, physical performance and the ability to work; but can only do so after having studied the breed and being immersed in these canines for many years. One factor that has impacted price structure is the difference between Czech Shepherds and West Germans Shepherds based on an over-inflated value. Many first time German Shepherd buyers are ignorant of this fact. The new buyer will look at a few breeder websites, see the price tag, then sticker shock sets in; so they search again based on a lower initial purchase price and soon find a breeder that sells at lower price tiers. It never was a bargain. Czechoslovakian Shepherds sell for less money for a number of reasons. The market is diluted with them, it seems they are on every street corner. If you want the best German Shepherd for your money you will need to hit the perfect trifecta: choose breeder, bloodline and puppy very wisely. Breed level dogs or dogs used for breeding purposes should be exceptionally beautiful, it should be like a day versus night comparison. Its time for a really bad analogy, but it should be like comparing the cute girl you saw at BurgerDoodle against the hot supermodel on TV. Or for the lady readers, it would be like comparing an overweight plumber to a ripped fitness instructor. There should be an impressive difference between the quality of a German Shepherd breed dog when compared to the German Shepherd you just saw on the street corner. Both parents should have correct body type, not be excessively underweight or overweight, they should have dark eye colors, the coat should be exceedingly beautiful with vivid color pigmentation. The body should be proportional to the animals overall size, the body should not be too short nor should it be too long. The dog should not be a giant massive pound beast, nor should it be a petite 55 pounds worth of dog. The withers should be the high point and the back line or top line should gracefully slope to the hind quarters from there. The torso should appear rugged with powerful legs, the angulation should be correct and the stance when viewed from the side should look as if the German Shepherd were ready or capable of striking in a nanosecond. The West German Shepherd is a herding type breed and should weigh between 70 to 90 lbs and be 22 to 26 inches tall. That is 22 to 24 inches for a female and 24 to 26 inches for a male Toss a ball and observe the adults as they run, their movement should be easy, graceful as if to announce - yep, I can do this all day long! Look to see if the movement is fluid or constrained. Check the eyes, ear and teeth. Eyes should have dark pupil colors, teeth properly aligned, ears should be set close and stand erect, they should be reasonably clean and not coated with goo inside. Do the adult dogs track you as you move around? Are they agitated or nervous at your presence there? Pet them, handle them and look for their response. Nearly every German Shepherd breeder in America will tell you that they have champion bloodlines. Immerse yourself by studying, looking at pictures, making comparisons, asking questions via phone, text or email and then going to visit several of the top contenders. Just because this breeder has nice looking German Shepherds - does not make them an ethical or honest person. Nearly everyone has heard the term puppy-mill. This refers to a large breeding operation that mass produces puppies to sell in a variety of retail outlets. Some of the puppies go to pet stores and boutiques, others are sold on-line and shipped in crates via carrier or air-freight, still others are to be sold at events like dog shows, local flea markets, farmers markets, outdoor festivals or from the back of a pick-up truck. Please beware of purchasing from the aforementioned venues, a large portion of these animals also come with very serious life threatening diseases. The puppy mills are known for over-crowding, unsanitary conditions and harsh treatment of animals since they often operate in secrecy in a warehouse or very remote type location. Another type of breeder is the novice, money driven or back yard breeder. These types are largely copy cats. They read websites of professional breeders and the on-line ads, familiarize themselves with the terminology, soon enough they begin executing their forgery. They position themselves as professional breeders but on a smaller scale, offering puppies that are hand raised etc. If you were to look around their property - they place looks like a normal home, there is no footprint or significant investment to indicate that they have created a top-notch, professional environment for their canines. The canine breeder should be a walking encyclopedia about the overall health, housing, care, nutrition, exercise and training necessary for the type of canines they are breeding. They should have built up a considerable amount of knowledge, expertise and experience around their breed, they should also be proficient at mating and whelping too. Their kennels and property should reflect careful consideration about every decision that impacts the housing, health and environment for their canines. I highly recommend you visit with a few breeders, there is no substitute for this step. This is an opportunity for you to evaluate the breeder, to observe the adult canine animals and also the time to examine the relationship between the breeder and their animals. If the breeder is a professional - then there should be compelling evidence that they have made a significant investment in providing great facilities for the animals. What is the condition of the fencing, the shelter, the dog house, the whelping area etc? How does the breeder talk, do you feel extremely comfortable with their knowledge, character, speech and demeanor? This is the precise moment in time where you need to follow your gut. I have visited other breeders and seen unbelievable things, such as: When the puppies eat, play, then take a nap; mice scurried out from under the shed and begin scarfing crumbs of food dropped by the puppies. Another breeder had a koi pond with long strands of green slime pond scum, the puppies were using this as a water source; the issue was every time that it rained, the runoff rainwater drained back into the koi pond carrying with it the germs and bacteria from the waste products generated by the puppies.
